THE ULTIMATE SINGLETRACK EXPERIENCE BC BIKE RACE has captured the imagination of the mountain biking world. Riders from 40 countries are marshaling on the 2018 start line to undertake the “best week of their lives.” It is these lovingly crafted singletrack gems that have created such high demand for the BC Bike Race and led British Columbia and its singletrack to become known around the world as a Mecca for mountain bikers. With that in mind we must give thanks to the incredibly supportive communities we travel through and to the trail builders who have laboriously toiled over the years to build, fix and maintain these hand crafted delights. Here amongst the free-flowing rivers, majestic mountains, abundant ferns and towering old growth trees our participants will sweat, grunt and laugh as they enjoy the only way to truly taste what the BC countryside is all about. The BC Bike Race team takes great pride and pleasure in sharing our backyard with other mountain biking enthusiasts. As a full-service event we promise to give our ‘All’ in facilitating your journey and your passage through what we believe to be the ‘Ultimate Singletrack Experience’. What’s more, off the bike we promise you will fall in love with the communities we travel through and this beautiful place we humbly call home.

This is the main event of the BC Bike Race and the reason we have been Sold Out since day one. Littered with climbs, descents and singletrack that will require the participants’ entire skill set to conquer and cover a distance that demands a good set of lungs. This event can be competed in as a Solo or as a Team of two. BC Bike Race has hosted over 50 countries in our history.

The communities, clubs and trail builders continue to grow their local networks. We are fortunate to be able to select amazing new trails each year and showcase them. Often they are simply the most fun and highlight an already exceptional day. Please note that while these Feature Trails will be marked ‘Start’ and ‘Finish’ they will not be timed - instead know that this is where you can let the wind whistle through your hair as you enjoy a daily BCBR flavoured descent.

« THE BEST WEEK OF YOUR LIFE «

British Columbia has long been a major contributor to the world of mountain biking, and the province has become a world class destination for outdoor recreation and adventure tourism. The diverse trails and inspiring landscapes that are cherished by so many who call this place home have caught the attention of riders from around the globe. Mountain biking is a growing opportunity for communities across BC with many social and economic benefits attached to it. What we ride and how we ride may have changed over the years; however, as mountain biking evolves it continues to lead us to a better and more rewarding experience that encourages participation from a widening spectrum of ages and abilities. The MBTA recognizes the role that the BC Bike Race has played in shaping what mountain biking means to this province. It is more than a race or a sport; it is about sharing our passion for riding, living healthy lifestyles and celebrating the great outdoors! The BC Bike Race brings people together – and not just the racers – the event represents a collaboration of partnerships with host communities, bike clubs, trail advocates, land authorities, local businesses, and many dedicated staff and volunteers. Everyone shares the vision of making the event the best it can be and telling the world that “mountain biking lives here”. On behalf of the MBTA, I wish you a great race! Ride safe, respect the land, and enjoy the beauty of this place. – Martin Littlejohn Executive Director, Western Canada Mountain Bike Tourism Association

RACE PRINCIPLES FOUNDATIONS OF THE BC BIKE RACE EXPERIENCE BC Bike Race is founded on high fives and epic tales from the big ring. From the front, middle or back of the pack you are free to choose your own adventure. We have developed a keen organizational awareness of some basic guidelines that, when understood by our participants, contribute to the most satisfying consumption of our handcrafted singletrack. In this section, we are sharing with you these fundamental guidelines. Adopt them, and you’ll be part of an amazing and unique adventure of a lifetime! –Andreas Hestler - “Dre” Director of Marketing

Stage Racing is a patience game; you will not win it on the first, second or even the fourth day. So manage your bike and yourself well, and recognize your own limitations. You will soon learn when to push them and when to live within them. Crossing the line having completed the “Ultimate Singletrack Experience” is your reward!

L E N G T H

BC singletrack is narrow and allows only one rider at a time. The faster rider has the right of way but must be courteous in requesting a pass. Communication comes from behind. Stage one in Cowichan Valley will sort us all out, and by stage two we will all be riding with people of a similar speed. Giving each other space on the singletrack makes for the most enjoyable riding. Get to know the people around you and have fun sharing the BCBR experience.

Everyone is here because they love to ride their mountain bikes and are looking for adventure. That’s why many people have come to live in this province. The camaraderie that is built between riders in our forests grows organically from sharing the experience with like-minded people.

The BCBR staff and the host volunteers of each destination city, town or village have been working hard and long to make this event a reality. If you see a red shirt, say thank you for their work. We are all part of the journey together.

Your bike is your trusty steed, take care of it and it will take care of you. The people around you are your safety network in the backcountry. Lend a hand to someone who needs it. Let’s all take care of each other and have a beer at the end of the day to celebrate.

Always, check in with Racer Relations for any issues or changes.

Mountain bike patrol is our customer service wing on course. They pre-ride the course adjusting marking and diagnosing any issues racers may have. They are also tasked with keeping the racers moving forward. They can prevent tricky on course mechanicals from ending a racer’s day, or help with techniques needed to overcome difficulties both physical and mental. They provide guidance and positive reinforcement for our riders and have communication with medical, moto & basecamp staff if help is required. Moto patrol is used to lead out start waves. A motorized vehicle up front of the wave absorbs risk to cyclists in our interface zones (between start and trails). Our Moto team bounces from place to Presented by: place on the course sometimes using off-course trails and roads. Don’t follow the Moto, follow the course marking! Motos are fast responders to incidents and if it seems like they are in a hurry, they are; please yield. Motos also are used to report on the race to our media team. Live tweets, FaceBook Live and other video Feature Trails are signature trails in each community, some are new media is often generated from our Moto team. Waking up in North Vancouver, drop your tent, and take your Racer Bag to the Racer Bag Check trucks to be transported to Basecamp in Squamish.

!

Today’s race will be conducted in a Time Trial (TT) format, small gaps between riders dispersed in GC or results order, 1 - 600. Though the course is short, these are North Shore km’s and this day is about 90% singletrack.

!

Red Bull presents The North Shore Downtime. Forever After is a trail that epitomizes the modern North Shore style of riding - challenging, fun and technical. It forces riders to put into use the entire skillset required to shred The Shore. BCBR and Red Bull challenge you to the North Shore Downtime on this 1.5 km timed section of trail on Mt. Seymour. Remember be awesome, give a bike length and communicate!

Racers will board buses at our basecamp between 11:45am and 2:00pm, for transport to Squamish.

There will be a beer garden available for you after the race at the finish line.!
