October Bucks’ Center for

Dr. Charles E. Rollins, founding president of Bucks who served as its top administrator for 22 years, passed away at the age of 94. Under his leadership, Bucks expanded and grew from 730 students in one building – Tyler Hall – to more than 9,000 students on a thriving Newtown campus that included nearly a dozen buildings.

Workforce Development graduated the seventh class from its highly successful Metalwork Manufacturing Training Program. The program is funded through a Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development which is administered by the County of Bucks. The goal is to provide training to develop the skills to pursue a career in local manufacturing companies. The program has a 94% jobplacement rate, thanks to a combination of the college’s partnership with more than three dozen companies and individual jobplacement assistance for each student.

August

The Bucks County Community College Foundation, the nonprofit fundraising arm of the public, appointed Katherine Sharp, District Manager for the Walgreen Company, to its Board of Directors. In addition, Constance M. Furman, Senior Vice President at the First National Bank & Trust Company of Newtown, was elected as President of the Board of Directors for the 2016-17 fiscal year. She graduated from Bucks with her associate degree in 1991, and became the first alumna to be appointed Board President since the organization’s founding in 1982.

September The Arts and Cultural Council of Bucks County, a consortium of organizations and individuals devoted to promoting the region as a cultural magnet, selected Bucks as its Member of the Year, recognizing its work in the education, promotion and support of the arts in Bucks County. The college also marked the 25th anniversary of its Historic Preservation Program this month. In 1991, Bucks became the first community college in the nation to offer a certificate in Historic Preservation. The unique 24-credit program, which combines classroom and practical field study, became the template for many other two-year colleges who wished to offer similar studies of the built environment.

8

Bucks also signed a program-to-program agreement with Philadelphia-based University of the Sciences to make it easier for Bucks students who earn an associate degree to complete their bachelor’s degree at USciences and pursue careers in sciences and health care.

A YEAR IN REVIEW: THE BEST OF 2016-2017 February

The Centurion, the college’s student-run newspaper, earned 10 Student Keystone Press Awards from the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation. That brings the total awards that the newspaper has won in the two-year college division of the statewide contest to 84 since it began entering in 2010.

Bucks also dedicated its baseball field in memory of Brian Seibert, who played baseball for the Centurions in 1993 and 1994. Off the field, he battled Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, diagnosed at age 11. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 23. In 2001, Brian’s parents, Jim and Maureen Seibert, established the Brian Seibert Memorial Scholarship which has since helped more than two dozen Bucks students who have (or have had) cancer. The family established a second scholarship in Brian’s name two years ago to help student athletes attend Bucks.

January Bucks volleyball player Breana Jackson was named to the allconference second team by the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, EPAC. The middle hitter for the Centurions broke three single-season records at the college, with the most kills in a season at 101, most service aces at 40 and most solo blocks at 29.

November/December Bucks engineering students, who were finalists at the National Science Foundation’s Community College Innovation Challenge in Washington, D.C., received a $10,000 grant from PECO to conduct a market analysis and investigate the development of a prototype for their Wind Catcher Max project. The wind tower is an alternative energy solution that also recycles water.

Bucks inked partnerships to make it easier for career and technical high school students to get on the fast track to a bachelor’s degree. The Technical Entrepreneurship Degree Program allows students at Bucks County Technical High School in Bristol, Middle Bucks Institute of Technology in Jamison, and Upper Bucks County Technical School in Perkasie to earn up to 29 college credits from Bucks while in high school. They can then earn a 60-credit associate degree in technical entrepreneurship from Bucks in just one year. Students are then guaranteed admission to Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa., to finish the final two years of a Bachelor of Applied Science in Technical Leadership.

College and Bucks County officials celebrated the opening of the new 43,000 square foot Science Center. The $17.5 million building features 10 laboratories, student collaboration spaces, indoor and outdoor gathering areas, and a geothermal heating and cooling system.

and community leaders attended the annual Bucks Presidents’ Community Awards Breakfast at the Newtown campus. As part of the event, the Foundation Board of Directors recognized Associate Professor Edward Ferdinand, Penn Community Bank, Steve Jordan, and Kyle and Damian VanHart for their support and advocacy.

In the spring, the business department at Bucks, in collaboration with local investors, launched the Start Me Up Challenge. The contest was developed to help encourage aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners around the county. Six finalists were selected, out of a field of 86 applicants, for a chance to receive funding assistance and professional mentoring. The competition was a great success and will become an annual event to further promote the entrepreneurial spirit within the college and community.

Bucks commemorated the distinction of being named an “All-Steinway School” with a free community concert hosted by Will Hammerstein, the grandson of famed Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. This distinction makes Bucks one of a few community colleges in the nation that is both an All-Steinway School and an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Bucks celebrated the accomplishments of nearly 1,000 graduates at its 51st annual commencement, which featured keynote speaker Joanne Grossi, AARP Pennsylvania State President and a 1979 alumna of Bucks. Also during commencement, the Bucks County Community College Alumni Association presented three Alumni Achievement Awards. Dr. Daniel McFarland ‘85, Associate Dean of the Rohrer College of Business at Rowan University, earned the Professional Achievement Award. Cheryl Campbell ‘13, Executive Director of the Christmas Gala, a nonprofit organization that serves low-income senior citizens, was presented with the Community Service Award. And Bernard Wagenseller ‘89, Executive Director of the Upper Bucks County Technical School, was given the Distinguished Service Award.

June For the second year in a row,

Bucks Professor Christine Delahanty put together a trio of students whose proposal was named a top-10 finalist in the National Science Foundation’s Community College Innovation Challenge. Bucks students Nikolaus Bertino, Roshan Thomas and Alexander White traveled to the NSF’s Innovation Boot Camp in Arlington, Va., and demonstrated their low-cost, portable device that small businesses and consumers can use to connect securely to any wireless network, regardless of whether that network has been compromised. The product simplifies the setup for advance security solutions, enabling anyone with little technical know-how to ensure they are secure while connecting to public Wi-Fi access points.

proposals on Capitol Hill. Still, the high-energy educator won’t take credit for her students’ success. “The students were the ones to make this all happen,” said Delahanty, who oversees the engineering program at Bucks. ”I was very impressed with their intense dedication to this true engineering effort. They just took off with it.”

Since 2009, Delahanty has been inspiring students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Department to reach for such high goals. In fact, she developed the engineering technology program of study after securing a $152,000 National Science Foundation grant in 2011. This included curriculum enhancements to engineering, equipment and laboratory upgrades, facilities assessment, and marketing efforts. She also organized an Industry Advisory Board to get real-world guidance for the curriculum. Such industry partnerships are second-nature to Delahanty, who began her career as an engineer before becoming an educator. She earned her bachelor of science in physics from Villanova University and her master of science in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. For nine years, she worked on communication satellite systems for General Electric’s Aerospace Division, and was an independent engineering consultant for several years after that. Among other initiatives Delahanty started at Bucks is the Society of Bucks Engineers, a club that allows students to plan engineering projects outside of the classroom. It was from this club that she drew members of the first team that made it to the NSF finals in 2016 for the Wind Catcher Max, a new design for a wind turbine that caught the attention of PECO. The energy company was so impressed, it awarded a $10,000 grant to conduct a feasibility study of the project. In 2017, another team went to the

Students from both teams have since gone on to continue their studies at prestigious universities such as Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, U.C. Berkley, Purdue, and Drexel. “I love working with my wonderful students at Bucks. I learn just as much from them as they do from me,” said Delahanty, who is the college’s Engineering Program Coordinator. “What’s more, my colleagues at Bucks are excellent. We share a common interest in the success of the students, and often discuss strategies regarding students we have in common, to make the experience for them as valuable as possible. Bucks is ready for the future, and I am very proud to be a part of that.” Other programs Delahanty is proud of include securing a $20,000 Dow Chemical grant to develop quadrator technology, which allowed the Bucks County Technical High School quadrotor club to purchase equipment, seek consulting from Bucks students and participate in community college competition. She also secured $10,000 in funds from Dow Chemical to conduct 3D printing workshops and demonstrations in the Bristol area school districts to encourage students to enter STEM careers. In addition to inspiring her engineering students, Delahanty teaches physics and math courses at Bucks.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: JOANNE GROSSI ‘79 Joanne Grossi ’79 is AARP Pennsylvania State President who has more than 30 years of experience in public health, public policy and legislative affairs. But before she embarked on that remarkable career, she began her academics close to home at Bucks. Grossi says that hard work paid off, as starting at Bucks put her on a path to more academic and professional success. After earning her Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Bucks, Grossi earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Temple University. She later earned a master’s degree in International Public Policy at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and completed additional graduate education at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and Hygiene.

“I am the daughter of an immigrant father from Italy who was a factory worker, and he and my stay-at-home mother could not afford to send me away to college, so I turned to Bucks.”

The pull to public service came early in her career. She worked as a legislative assistant to Congressman Peter Kostmayer and spent three years at the American Embassy in Rome, Italy, where she worked as a special assistant to Ambassador Millicent Fenwick. Grossi also served for 13 years as a senior technical advisor in the Bureau of Global Health at the U.S. Agency for International Development, where she oversaw international health programs in developing countries. Before her current position at AARP, Grossi served for seven years as the Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to that, she served as the Deputy Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Grossi has relied upon the grit and perseverance she learned at Bucks to summon the courage to stand up for her convictions throughout her career

in public service, such as when as Pennsylvania’s Deputy Secretary of Health she supported a public smoking ban, which then-Governor Ed Rendell was opposed to. “As I served at the pleasure of the Governor, I knew that telling him his position was wrong on a policy meant risking losing my job, but I knew that my loyalty wasn’t to the Governor, but to the citizens of Pennsylvania for whom I worked,” recalled Grossi. “I had to stand up for them, no matter what the cost, because in the end, you can always get another job, but you can’t get back the opportunity to demonstrate courage and integrity.” Grossi recounted that story when she returned to her alma mater in 2017 as keynote speaker for Bucks’ 51st Commencement Ceremony, where she was granted an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree for her contributions to the community.

To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights: I.

The Donor Bill of Rights was created by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel (AAFRC), Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

“After visiting the Upper Bucks Campus, the staff helped to calm my nerves and set up a solid plan for accomplishing my goal. I was originally very intimidated with the thought of taking classes with a bunch of younger people, but those fears were washed away,” said Holly. “I was in a particularly difficult situation being a single parent at the time, which meant having to work and go to school full time, but any time I had schedule or class trouble, I would reach out to Bucks and they would work hard to find a solution,” he said. “This was also true with faculty: any time I had a schedule conflict or needed to leave to handle a pressing issue, they were willing and ready to work with me. They made me feel less like I was a part of an institution, and more like I was part of a family.”

After graduating from Bucks in 2016, Holly was accepted at Drexel, where all of his Bucks credits transferred. “I found that I was ahead of the curve in certain areas of study when I got to Drexel, mainly mathematics,” he noted. In addition, a scholarship he earned while at Bucks has led to a career opportunity. “Bucks opened doors for me through their various partnerships with local organizations. I was a recipient of the PECO Scholars Award. After leaving Bucks I reached out to PECO, and am now working under them as an intern until I graduate from Drexel.”

“After getting out of the Army and moving to Upper Bucks County, I knew I wanted to go into engineering but I had no idea where or how to get started.”

“It is an honor for me to be recognized for my hard work as I value my education very deeply, and receiving this scholarship motivates me to strive for excellence.”
