MAY/JUNE 2022
OL IV ER THERE’S LOTS TO EXPERIENCE AT TINHORN CREEK JENNA HICKMAN
It’s no secret that the Okanagan Valley is home to many of Canada’s most internationally celebrated wineries, Tinhorn Creek being one of them. Established in 1993, the winery has been making its mark for almost three decades. Perched on the Golden Mile Bench in Oliver, BC, Tinhorn Creek offers panoramic valley views that span all the way to Osoyoos Lake. From inside the tasting room or outside on the covered patio, visitors can gaze upon the picturesque landscape that makes the southern Okanagan region truly unique. “The Okanagan is fantastic because you have wine professionals from all over the world in one place sharing their knowledge,” says Leandro Nosal, head winemaker at Tinhorn Creek. “It’s an exciting place to be crafting wine because there is so much versatility and room for creativity. Within the Okanagan, I think the Golden Mile Bench has one of the most interesting terroirs, and I strive to showcase that uniqueness in our wines.”
FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO HIKE
For those who might want to work up a thirst and an appetite, the winery backs onto the Golden Mile Stamp Mill Trail. The trail is one of the only remaining access points to the Mount Kobau Range and takes hikers to historic century-old stamp mill ruins. The path leading from the winery up to the trailhead takes you past Tinhorn’s Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Muscat and Malbec plots, as well as the new developing vineyard sites at the far west of the property, which will be dedicated to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The hike offers stunning views of Tinhorn’s property, Osoyoos Lake and the South Okanagan Valley. Once back from your hike, it’s time for wine. Whether you’re enjoying your wine flight on their sunlit covered patio overlooking the Valley, seated below in front of the demonstration vineyard, or having a bottle picnicking in the amphitheatre, you can take in the impressive views and customize your experience at Tinhorn Creek.
NEW RELEASES AND EXPERIENCES
While visiting this spring, be sure to try Tinhorn Creek’s newest releases. They will be featuring their highly anticipated Rosé, along with their new Blanc de Blanc Sparkling and famous Pinot Gris. Starting on the May long weekend (May 21–23), Tinhorn Creek will officially offer their Library Lounge Experience. Held in an intimate setting above the winery’s cellar,
surrounded by Tinhorn’s collection of vintage library bottles, guests will be immersed in the nearly-30-year-old history of Tinhorn Creek. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a flight of wines focusing on a particular vintage or wine varietal, while learning about the aging potential of wine. Also starting May long weekend is Tinhorn Creek’s Guided Tour, where guests will embark on a walk around the beautiful estate. While learning about the winery’s history, guests will be shown the vineyards and barrel cellars. After touring the property, guests will be treated to a carefully selected wine flight so they can transfer the knowledge they’ve learned to the wine itself. This fully immersive experience is the best way to learn about the entire winemaking process, from the growing of the grapes to barreling. You’ll want to bring your thirst and your questions for this experience! Visitors can now elevate their wine experience further by opting to add food pairings to their wine flight,
provided by Miradoro Restaurant. Discover how awardwinning executive chef Jeff Van Geest’s Mediterraneanstyle cuisine pairs beautifully with Tinhorn Creek’s wine, enhancing the flavours of both the wine and the food.
SUSTAINABILITY
Miradoro Restaurant is dedicated to sourcing local products wherever possible, tying into Tinhorn Creek’s continued leadership in sustainable practices. One of the new sustainability initiatives at Tinhorn Creek is their EchoTrack bat initiative. The southern Okanagan is home to 14 different species of bats, one being the pallid bat. One of the rarest mammals in British Columbia—and in Canada—it can only be found in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valley. The winery is working to help draw the native bat population back to the area by planting native vegetation and species to encourage pollination and fertilization by the bats. The Tinhorn Creek Tasting Room is open seven days a week from 10 am to 7 pm. Miradoro Restaurant is also open daily, from 11:30 am to 9 pm. The winery strongly encourages reservations, but will do their best to accommodate walk-ins. For more information about Tinhorn Creek and its wine club, or to book a wine flight experience, please contact 1-888-505-5537 or visit tinhorn.com.

Spring Asparagus Soup
R E C IP E
COURTESY OF CHEF ROD BUTTERS Serves 4
INGREDIENTS: 2 lbs fresh asparagus *lightly blanched and chopped. Reserve the tips for garnish 1.5 cup fresh spinach leaves sea salt pepper ¼ lb (1 stick) butter 1 medium onion-small dice 2 stalks celery-small dice 1 small leek-sliced 6 white mushrooms-sliced 4 cloves garlic-minced 3 pc bay leaves ½ tsp black peppercorns 4 sprigs mint 3 cups vegetable stock 1 cup whipping cream
DIRECTIONS: In a large pot melt butter over medium heat until starts to slightly bubble. Add onion, celery, leek, mushrooms, and garlic. Cook until vegetables soften, stirring to prevent any browning. Reduce heat if too hot. Approx. 5-7 min. Add bay leaves, peppercorns, mint, stock, and cream. Mix well. Gently bring soup just short of a boil and reduce to a very low simmer. Partially cover pot with lid and continue cooking approx. 30-40 min. Stir occasionally. Remove from heat and strain into a pot or container through a large fine mesh strainer. Vegetables can be discarded. Get blender ready. With soup mixture still hot put 1/3 of blanched asparagus and some spinach into blender. Pour in 1/3 of hot liquid. Start blender on low and gradually turn to high and blend until very smooth. Be careful when first starting to blend. Strain again through fine mesh strainer. Repeat this process in thirds until all asparagus and spinach and liquid are blended. Whisk soup and season to taste with salt and pepper. Heat to serve or chill until use. Garnish with asparagus tips. This soup is also excellent when served chilled.

SUMMERHILL SPRING WINE RELEASES ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
HAMISH MELROSE
It’s almost here—we can practically taste it. Summer in Kelowna really is the perfect balance of sun, fun, food, and friends, and we really are spoiled for choice. Urban Distilleries and Winery truly encapsulates all that our beautiful valley has to offer. Enjoy homemade craft spirits mixed elegantly into original cocktails, paired with a seasonal menu curated by chef Stefan Pimenta. Urban Distilleries has been producing award-winning handcrafted spirits for over 10 years, and things are only getting bigger and better since their relocation to Old Okanagan Road on the West Kelowna Wine Trail.
SHAKERS COCKTAIL LOUNGE
Urban Distilleries’ newest addition is the lively Shakers Cocktail Lounge, which boasts indoor and outdoor dining, as well as bar seating for those who want to stay light on their feet, and private areas if you’re looking for something a little more relaxing. Much like their award-winning spirits, each dish is carefully crafted from locally sourced ingredients and is paired with an original signature cocktail. Treat yourself to the mouth-watering deviled eggs in the styles of BLT, avocado basil, dill pickle and paprika, paired perfectly with their Ultimate Caesar Experience, or go all out and share a decadent charcuterie board with a Fireside Old Fashioned. Do you know the difference between a Boston and a Cobbler shaker? There are many eye-catching antique, modern and collectable shakers decorating the Shakers Cocktail Lounge. All of this and more makes Urban Distilleries the ultimate must-visit West Kelowna venue.
Taste the nuances of spring and terroir in your glass as you sip through spring wine releases at Summerhill Pyramid Winery. Just as buds on the vines welcome increased sunlight after winter’s sleep, the tasting room exudes excitement as the season unfolds. Winemaker Michael Alexander has released the latest vintages and proudly presents beautiful expressions of Summerhill’s organic/biodynamic program.
SUMMER SIPPER 2021 ORGANIC MALBEC SYRAH ROSÉ
More Malbec-forward than the last vintage, this Winemaker Michael Alexander fruity Rosé is 57 per cent Malbec and 43 per cent Photo by Kevin Trowbridge Syrah. Watermelon, cherry, raspberry, and strawberry tantalize your nose. On your palate it is surprisingly dry, with light to medium body and soft acidity, revealing tart cherry, watermelon, red grapefruit, and strawberry notes. Its medium-length clean finish ensures it’s perfect on its own or paired with delicate flavours such as pulled pork tacos, salmon burgers or a spicy tuna poké bowl.
PURITY PERSONIFIED IN WHITE WINES
Michael notes, “2021 threw a few curve balls, such as the heat dome, and sunshine obscured by wildfire smoke. We’ve detected no smoke taint; however, we did experience our fruit yielding less juice. Production was down while the flavours had greater concentration and intensity.” The 2021 Estate Grown Biodynamic Riesling is just off dry with vivacious fresh pear, apple, ginger, and sweet citrus blossom notes. Zippy acidity and minerality balance the natural sweetness, leading to a long, clean finish. Spicy Thai curries or soft, rich cheeses complement it beautifully. The 2021 Estate Grown Biodynamic Muscat exhibits those classic, delectable Okanagan qualities that place it in the top 10 Muscats in the world perennially. Orange blossom, bee pollen and ripe peach aromas hint of the gentle acidity and off-dry lemon and lime with lingering grapefruit. Infinite pairing possibilities include sashimi, fresh fruit dishes or habanero-spiked chicken wings. For all the wine releases, latest menus, and events, see summerhill.bc.ca

Nestled in the hills off of Naramata Road in Penticton, BC, Red Rooster Winery offers an experience beyond expectations. Founded in 1990, Red Rooster Winery has been a staple in the Okanagan wine industry for decades. Its first vintage was released in 1997 and ever since, the winery has been impressing people all across Canada.
LOCAL PARTNERSHIP
Committed to top-notch hospitality and delivering unforgettable experiences, Red Rooster is partnering with local Penticton restaurant The Nest this spring to provide mouthwatering food pairings to add onto your seated wine flight. Established in 2016, The Nest prides itself on highlighting locally sourced ingredients and showcasing them in an elevated and modern way. This spring, Red Rooster will be offering several revamped experiences: their Signature Experience, Iconic Experience, Frosé Experience and Winemakers Experience. The Signature Experience, a seated educational option, will awaken your senses and educate you on the various senses involved in wine tasting. Starting in May, guests will be hosted on Red Rooster’s expansive covered patio and will be invited to try a selection of the winery’s red and white releases. Each varietal will be paired with tastes and smells of sweet, salty, spicy and sour samples, highlighting how each wine adapts to different flavour profiles. Wines included in the flight will change weekly. Red Rooster’s Iconic Experience will have your tastebuds exploding with flavour as you try small bites and limited release wines. Starting on May 20, this one-hour seated wine and food pairing will further highlight not only how food can bring out different aromas and flavours in wine, but how different flavours in the food can actually enhance the wine itself.
For an opportunity to spend a few hours with the Red Rooster winemaking team and learn the ins and outs of what goes into creating award-winning wine, the Winemakers Experience is unparalleled. Starting in July,
the winery will be offering this exclusive tour, but you can book ahead now to secure your spot. The one-anda-half-hour experience will take guests on a guided tour of Red Rooster’s cellars, and will discuss blending, barrel aging, fermenting, and questions such as “What does ‘sur lie’ mean?” or “What is carbonic maceration?” Rest assured that you will leave with new knowledge. This hands-on experience will take place every Thursday during July and August, with each week focusing on a different theme, such as the difference between Syrah and Shiraz, or why Pinot Noir is known as the “heartbreak grape.” Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or taking your first sips, there is something for everyone to take away. To reserve a wine flight at Red Rooster and learn more about upcoming experiences, visit www.redroosterwinery. com/tours-and-experiences/ to book.

their own wine. They continue to consult with Pascal Madevon. His fine palate is engaged in decision-making as the process migrates on-site with Wilbert as lead winemaker. Known for flagship Rieslings, Four Shadows scored high points and amassed medals for its distinctive wines. Riesling is released in classic, dry and sparkling. Plus, you’ll find Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Rosé, and now, Zweigelt and Merlot Reserve. “We are excited to release our 2019 Merlot Reserve,” Joka said. “Narrowing down from our 16 barrels of Merlot, we engaged our staff to taste five barrels along with Pascal. The top two barrels were blended as a reserve and aged in French oak.” With red fruits and berries on the nose, the bright, full-bodied Merlot Reserve presents dried plum, raspberry, a hint of smokiness and chocolate on the palate. This wine received Gold from the BC Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards 2021. Visit fourshadowsvineyard.com for more details and hours.

MAY/JUNE 2022 With colours ranging from light blush to an inviting pink, rosés are sure to please. For those of you new to the wonderful world of wine, rosé wines are made by crushing the grapes, skin on, and leaving the skins in for a few hours. That’s what gives the wine its beautiful blush or pink hue. They can lean towards dry or sweet. Most of these pretty pink wines are fresh and fruity with hints of melon, cherries and raspberry. If you lean towards a drier wine, look for one made with a Pinot Noir or Syrah.
Darcy Nybo I love spring because it means the new releases are here! There are new varietals and new vintages of old favourites waiting to be revealed. One of my favourite parts of spring, aside from the lack of snow and the end of long dark days, is tasting the latest offerings of my favourite wines. White, sparkling, and the ever-popular rosé wines are out there, waiting for you to discover or rediscover them. The anticipation of will it or won’t it be like last year’s? dangles like the proverbial carrot for wine lovers. British Columbia has an abundance of great rosés that differ from winery to winery. When you find one you love, it’s a good bet the next year’s vintage will be just as good, and possibly better. To be quite honest, I have yet to taste a rosé that’s disappointed me.
Then there’s the anticipation of the new releases of white wines. I do so love a good, robust red in the fall and winter; however, come spring and summer, I want a light and cheerful white to enjoy while relaxing on the deck. I suggest you imagine yourself somewhere inviting outdoors when you taste this year’s offerings. It amazes me how a wine can taste so different when enjoyed on a patio in the fresh air and sunshine. Then there are the sparkling wines. Every year I am reminded how delicious our BC sparkling wines are. While many think sparkling wines are for winter and holiday celebrations, they are great yearround. They are fabulous on their own as a patio sipper and go great with pretty much everything from cheese to shellfish and salmon, and veggies and mushrooms to desserts. And don’t forget— sparkling wines range from the whitest of whites to the pinkest of rosés, and each has its own unique flavour palate. While you are out there supporting our BC wineries, make sure you taste some of their reds too. You never know when a well-bodied and balanced red might be needed in the coming months. Happy tasting, everyone!

OS OYOOS A SEASON OF ADVENTURE IS BLOSSOMING IN THE OKANAGAN BLAKE ALLEN
Spring has truly sprung in the Okanagan Valley! And there’s no better way to celebrate the return of the warmer weather than with a visit to Osoyoos where you can be among the first to sample some world-class wine and spirits. Savour the town’s sensational dining, break a sweat with some outdoor adventures in that famous desert sun, or just revel with friends at one of the many festivals and events that kick off the spring season in the Okanagan Valley.
SPRING AWAITS YOU IN OSOYOOS
As “Canada’s Warmest Welcome,” Osoyoos invites you to get out in the sun. The month of May kicks off with a series of open markets and table dinners at many of the region’s internationally renowned wineries, as well as the Osoyoos Spring Music Festival (May 4–8), where multiple musicians (including a few Juno Award-winners) will hit several stages around town.
FESTIVALS AND FARMERS’ MARKET
There’s a festival for almost everyone here. For example, those looking to get out into nature can partake in any number of guided hikes, tours and events being put on as part of the Meadowlark Nature Festival (May 20–23). Be sure to leave space on your calendar for Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, as Osoyoos has plenty of immersive Indigenous experiences to enjoy. Stay and enjoy the Osoyoos Cherry Fiesta and Fireworks Show on July 1. The blossoming of the spring season also means the blossoming of the region’s rich agricultural bounty, which is on full display at the Osoyoos Farmers’ Market, running every Saturday at Town Hall Square from 9 am to 1 pm starting May 7.
WINERIES GALORE
With more than 50 wineries between two celebrated wine regions (Oliver-Osoyoos and the Similkameen Valley) all within a 20-minute drive of Osoyoos, travellers can hit the scenic backroads and tour many vineyards during their visit, sampling many different wines and grape varietals. SPIRITS, CRAFT BEER AND CIDER
Tumbleweed Spirits focuses on small-batch spirits. Their cherry moonshine is made with local South Okanagan cherries—or, for the brave, the Fireweed Whiskey will surely knock your socks off. There’s also North Basin Brewing Co., located in downtown Osoyoos and offering local suds like The Ditch IPA, named after the infamous irrigation canal that turned the South Okanagan into the lush array of orchards and vineyards that it is today. And of course, with its abundance of apples, Osoyoos has several cideries nearby, like Orchard Hill Estate Cidery, Bordertown, and Maverick, serving sips of the South Okanagan’s favourite fruit.
FARM-TO-TABLE RESTAURANTS
If you’re looking to pair that new favourite wine or spirit you just discovered, you’re in luck, because Osoyoos is also a leading culinary destination in Canada. It is home to many farm-to-table restaurants. Connoisseurs and aspiring foodies can savour seasonal local flavours prepared by renowned chefs. Using the best of the bounty from the South Okanagan and Similkameen, local chefs source much of their produce from their own backyard to produce a diverse array of international and indigenous cuisines. Be sure to leave room to journey along the Tortilla Trail, the newest culinary adventure to arrive in Osoyoos.
OUTDOOR FUN
You’ll also want to get out and enjoy the sunshine while you’re down here. Already famous for its warm weather and South Okanagan sunshine, outdoor fun and adventure can be found all over Osoyoos this time of year. Jump into Canada’s warmest lake and try your hand at any number of water sports, hit the links on any of the town’s multiple internationally renowned golf courses, or venture out into Canada’s desert with a trip to either Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre or the Osoyoos Desert Centre with its newly renovated Desert Boardwalk Trail.

OLIVER AT KISMET ESTATE WINERY, SPRING MEANS RENEWAL ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
Renewal is associated with spring. As fresh greenery and buds adorn the vines, Kismet Estate Winery is set for a new season of joy and reconnection.
Rich blends Moksha and Mantra, plus varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, evoke evening barbecues savouring full-bodied expressions.
NEW WINE RELEASES LEAD
MORE ACCESS THROUGH WINE CLUB
Kismet’s Tasting Room is open from 10 am to 6 pm daily. Experience spring releases including brand-new wines to try. White and rosé wines whisper warmth and patio season. Consider Lotus, a saignée symphony of delicate flavours and balanced acidity. Sip Pinot Grigio, crisp and precise with highlights of stone fruit, apples and melon, and Saféd, an expressive floral and vibrant blend—perpetual award-winners along with the reds.
Before launching Kismet, the Dhaliwal brothers grew grapes for over 20 years for other South Okanagan wineries, who celebrated numerous awards with their fruit. Now Kismet itself consistently steps to the podium. Given the limited quantities, some expressions have restricted release. For greater access to these amazing wines, join one of the Wine Club’s two flexible options. The Connection Club has one annual shipment of 12 bottles. You customize which wines you’ll receive in June, shipped free. After the first case, you’ll enjoy a 10 per cent discount in the Tasting Room and online. You’ll also enjoy 10 per cent off ticketed events, 50 per cent off shipping on additional orders, free wine tastings, and by-appointment free vineyard and winery tours for you and three guests. The Devotion Club comprises two annual shipments of 12 bottles twice a year in May and October, also fully customizable by you, with free shipping. You can even opt to receive all 24 bottles at once rather than in two shipments. After the first case, you’ll receive free shipping on all orders and a 15 per cent discount in the Tasting Room and online with access to Kismet’s Library Collection of previous vintages, subject to availability. You’ll also receive 15 per cent off special events with priority access before public ticket release. Plus, you’ll be eligible by appointment for free private wine tastings and free vineyard and winery tours for you and three guests. Both clubs receive exclusive pricing for Award-Winning Reserve Vintages, five per cent off at Masala Bistro Restaurant, and the Kismet newsletter. Masala Bistro offers breathtaking views of Black Sage Bench as you pair Kismet wine with the exotic flavours of Indian delicacies.
PRIVATE WEDDING AND SPECIAL OCCASION VENUE
If there’s a wedding or other special occasion in your future, explore the romantic vineyard venue at Kismet. Set within a vineyard that opens to Mirror Lake, it creates a picture-perfect ambience. With a capacity of up to 150, the Kismet event venue still has availability in 2022. For full information on the venue, wine releases, and Tasting Room and Masala Bistro Restaurant hours, see kismetestatewinery.com.

OL IV ER PATIO SEASON IS IN FULL SWING AT BLACK HILLS ESTATE WINERY JENNA HICKMAN
As the desert sun sets later and later, and orchard flowers begin to blossom, the Okanagan comes to life with spring. However, the most exciting part about the warmer weather is the resurgence of patio season. Overlooking the lush vineyards and arid deserts hills of the South Okanagan, Black Hills Estate Winery, located between Osoyoos and Oliver, has one of the best patios in the valley. Whether you’re enjoying a seated wine flight on the vineyard terrace or sampling the new releases in a shaded cabana, there is no better way to welcome the balmy weather than a visit to Black Hills Estate Winery.
NEW RELEASES
While you’re visiting, make sure you try the newest release of the renowned Nota Bene. Black Hills started releasing their signature Nota Bene in 1999, and since then, the wine has gained a huge following. Latin for “take note,” Black Hills’ Nota Bene is a bold Bordeaux-style red blend that is perfect for aging. “Nota Bene is a true representation of our Estate vineyard, and the quality of wine we produce at Black Hills,” said Black Hills head winemaker Ross Wise, MW. Expertly blended, the wine evokes flavours of intense black cherry, red currant and subtle layers of dark spices. Year after year the team continues to produce a wine of exceptional taste and quality that will continue to drink well for years to come. Another highly anticipated release from Black Hills is their Carménère. One of the first wineries in the Okanagan to plant Carménère grapes, Black Hills’ Carménère is arguably their most exclusive release of all. As one of very few wineries in Canada who produce Carménère, Black Hills is able to showcase their expertise and truly unique terroir through this wine. With aromas of black pepper, cherry and licorice and flavours of red berry fruits with an earthy finish, this rich wine is the perfect accompaniment to summer evening barbeques.
NOTA BENE RELEASE PARTY
Black Hills is thrilled to announce that the return of their famed Nota Bene Release Party will take place at the estate on June 18, 2022. After two years of no in-person events, the winery is eager to bring people together to try the newest vintage of Nota Bene and enjoy succulent
food pairings catered by Miradoro Restaurant, as well as live music and various forms of unique entertainment. Black Hills’ Wine Club members will receive first access to tickets, but a limited number will be available to the public.
JOIN THE WINE CLUB
