W o r king togeth er to gr o w the Fresh water Fis hing Touri sm Se ctor Freshwater fishing is one of BC’s pioneering tourism sectors and has been a key economic driver for rural communities across the province since the early 1900’s. The first fishing lodge in the Kamloops region dates back to 1905 and by the 1920’s lodges had opened at numerous lakes across the interior. The decades that followed saw visitors from around the world flock to the region to catch the legendary Kamloops Trout. Today, freshwater fishing tourism is a significant portion of the overall freshwater recreational fishing economy. According to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC “in 2010 the direct economic impact of freshwater fishing as a whole was $546 million, contributing $164 million in value added GDP, and almost $94 million in wages and benefits. When we add indirect and induced impacts, including $55 million in tax revenues, the total impact of freshwater fishing came to $957 million in expenditures, GDP, salaries and wages and employment of 5,000 person years.” The 2015 Freshwater Fishing Tourism Symposium is an opportunity for stakeholders to gather and discuss how we can work together to grow the freshwater fishing tourism sector. The symposium’s overlying focus will be on tourism but will also feature a diverse set of topics ranging from habitat conservation and fisheries research to tourism marketing and online reputation management. Andrew Wilson became the Freshwater Fisheries Society President in 2015 and is an ex-officio member of the Societies Board of Directors. Andrew left government in 2014 to become Vice President, Sport Fishing Division, with the Society. Prior to that he held the position of Director, Fish and Wildlife Branch, for the Province for three years and spent five years as the Provincial Fisheries Manager.

In his twenty-year career Daniel Edward Craig has worked for a variety of hotels and tourism entities, in positions ranging from director of sales & marketing to vice president. Under his leadership as general manager, Opus Hotel in Vancouver was voted one of the World’s Best 100 Hotels by readers of Condé Nast Traveler and launched the first-ever hotel blog, attracting a worldwide following. Today, as founder of Reknown, he is a leading authority in online reputation management in the tourism industry.

Brian Springinotic joined the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation in 2004, becoming Executive Director in 2005. Since joining the Foundation, he has led the organization through a transition from government agency to the current status as an independent not for profit charitable foundation. Prior to joining the Foundation, Brian started his working career in the forest industry and then moved on to a career with the provincial government, including several years in the conservation land management field as well as protected area policy, planning and management work. He has a degree in Resource Geography from UVIC as well as an Education degree from UBC.

E va n L ov e l e s s W i ld e r ne s s T ou r i sm A sso c i ati o n o f B C Evan is the Executive Director of the Wilderness Tourism Association of BC. He has more than 20 years experience as a professional consultant in the areas of tourism, recreation, and resource planning and development, and has worked with several small businesses, communities, organizations, and governments. Evan has a deep passion and aptitude for the outdoors, wilderness conservation and stewardship, and business sustainability. When not working, Evan spends time traveling and adventuring with his Family.

M i k e R a m s a y, F i sh er i es M an ag er F or e s t s, L a nd s & N atu r al R eso u r c e O p er ati o n s Mike has been working in fisheries management in British Columbia for over 20 years. Prior to his current role as Fisheries Manager, he was the Fish and Wildlife Section Head for the Cariboo Region. Mike has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Victoria and Master of Aquaculture from Simon Fraser University.

Kim joined Destination BC in August 2013 as Manager, Market Development for Europe and S. Pacific. In August, 2015, she joined the Destination Development & Co-Op Marketing group as the Manager, Marketing Co-Op Programs. Prior to working at Destination BC, Kim worked for Tourism Whistler, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Delta Hotels and Resorts and the Squamish Chamber of Commerce. Kim is from Vancouver originally, has a B.A from UBC and an M.B.A from Royal Roads University. She is looking forward to her new role working with the sectors and communities on the new Co-Op Program.

Vancouver native Walt Judas is the CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC). TIABC advocates for the interests of British Columbia’s $13 billion+ tourism economy. As a not-for-profit trade association, TIABC works collaboratively with its members - private sector tourism businesses, industry associations and destination marketing organizations - to ensure the best working environment for a competitive tourism industry. Walt was formerly vice president, Marketing Communications, Member Services & Sport for Tourism Vancouver.

Fly Fishing has been in his blood since day one as his father, Steve Jennings, has guided and owned fly shops in the Interior for over 25 years. Matt graduated with Majors in Marketing and Economics from Thompson River University in 2006 and has studied international and sports economic is Manchester, England. Matt has been working with the BCFROA since 2012.
