Teacher Directions for Games Use the rules and questions below to play and debrief the two games. The goal is for students to experience why rules are necessary.
Game 1: Let’s go outside and play a game with two balls. Here are the rules: 1. Make two teams. 2. Each team gets a ball. 3. The faster team wins. 4. Ready? Go! Let’s talk about the first game. • How did the game make you feel? (frustrated, confused) • Was this a good game? Why or why not? (not very satisfying) • How could the game be improved? (needs rules)
Game 2: Now let’s play a different game with these rules: 1. Line up in two teams. 2. Each team has a ball and a cone. 3. The first runner runs around the cone with the ball. 4. The runner hands the ball to the next runner. 5. The team that finishes first wins. Let’s talk about the second game. • How did the game make you feel? (excited, focused) • Which game did you like better? Why? (likely the one with rules) • Why is it important to have rules? (order, safety, fairness) • Where else do rules help us? (school, home, community)
