A Native American Perspective
In a way, I have two family groups. One group is the family I live with. The other group is the family I come from. I am an American Indian. My family is Miwok, Paiute, and Kashaya Pomo. Those are three tribes, or American Indian groups. My grandmother is a Kashaya Pomo. That is why my middle name is Kashaya. It links me to people in my past.

Are you part of a community group? I am in the Girl Scouts. We help our town. We pick up trash. We recycle cans and bottles. I am also on a community ski team. The ski team races every winter. We ski down the mountains near my town. Each year, I learn to ski a little better.

A Native American Perspective
My next group is the one I love best. It is basket weavers. Basket weaving is an old American Indian craft. The women in my family have done this for years. Some of their baskets are in museums. There, others can learn about our craft and people. I learned to weave from my grandmother. I use plants that grow by the lake near my home. Weaving baskets is one more link to my past.
