LOS ANGELES

LIFESTYLE

LOCATION The site for this project is a dense urban corner lot located on the southeast corner of S. Figueroa Street and W Olympic Ave. The lot size is approximately 11,500 SF and it is in the epicenter of a downtown renaissance. ABOUT With the major car brands vying for a share of the lifestyle market, both competing and complimenting other lifestyle products and lifestyle brands, there is a need to rethink the automotive company’s message to the market, how cars will be sold and ultimately the typology of automobile showrooms. We believe that architecture is an inevitable agent and can be a catalyst for change not only in the automotive marketplace but also within the urban realm and architectural experience. Due largely in part to the economic equation, car showrooms and dealerships traditionally are located on the outskirts of urban areas where land values are generally lower and open land is more generally available. To the marketplace, car showrooms and dealers are destinations rather than an integral part of the urban fabric and lifestyle experience. The site for this project will subvert this traditional model by integrating the car showroom and sales programs into dense city centers therefore transforming the activity of the sterile “industry” perception to that of high fashion, “lifestyle” retailers.

LIBRARY

LOCATION 203 Chautauqua Boulevard Los Angeles, CA REQUIREMENTS Design a Library addition to the Eames Case Study House #8 site. The Library is to be built utilizing concrete as its primary material. ABOUT The Eames Case Study Program focused on designs that can be manufactured at a large scale. CIVIC CENTER

LOCATION This site is located in the wide median between north and south roadways of Venice Boulevard a few blocks from the Ocean, across Venice Way/Ocean Avenue from the Venice branch library. REQUIREMENTS Design a project that represents the Neighborhood Council District of Venice Beach, California. ABOUT This site is almost dead flat; topography was not be a very big issue. There is good public transportation (bus only) from LA Metro (lines 33 and 333) and Santa Monica systems. Parking will be provided in a new structure (not designed by you) immediately west of the site. This will be a city owned structure whose principal purpose is to provide beach parking. New apartment buildings designed by Fred Fisher are east of the site in the same median. Urban fabric to the north and south of the site is residential of mixed scale; relatively dense. The northwest corner of the Venice canal grid is one block south of this site.

INSTITUTION/RECREATION

ENDOTERRA

LOCATION Nestled between the Rand Corporation headquarters, Santa Monica City Hall, the termination (or commencement) of the 10 interstate freeway and the Pacific Ocean, lies a stretch of land that is proposed as an urban park. The area is a confluence of diverse urban conditions. Unique in contextual complexity the site offers opportunities to explore convergence of various typologies and the possible impact they impose on the program. REQUIREMENTS Maintaining the proposed parks open space while infusing the site with a building program and necessary circulation routes. The successful integration of landscape and structure will be the paramount challenge. Defining experiences through transitional spatial conditions is the principal examination of the studio. Optimizing the use of volumetric variation while integrating natural light into a semisubterranean condition must be explored. The studio must employ and compose parametric programming to elevate textural surface articulation in support of their design criteria. Program A mid size, 20,000-30,000 sq ft institutional building or series of buildings, partially submerged or subterranean which aims to weave itself into the parks open space.

Endoterra was designed as a fusion of both institution and recreational activities provided by a park. The ground and 1st floor levels (top of page) and the depict the classrooms and open halls provided for the institution. The underground level (btm of page) depict the library, gallery space, and outdoor hall provided for the park. The site plan however brings both park and institution together by creating public spaces throughout the entire structure.

DEEP SEA WATER PORT

GATEWAY

LOCATION Tijuana, Mexico REQUIREMENTS BORDERSTUDIO is positioned as a critique of the international policies brought to bear on the region by the governments of both the US and Mexico. The studio required careful consideration of the political, social, economic and environmental issues affecting the border in an effort to propose a construction program of radical connection rather than separation. Recognizing that simply introducing built structures into an environment has the ability to solve little, the studio requires the formulation of hybrid programs, strategies and policies that speak to root causes. ABOUT The International Gateway Project was conceived and based on the social, political, and economic hardships that plague Mexico along the Northern Region. The project focused on these three subjects and explores the idea of a shipping/tourist port located miles off shore from the city of Tijuana, Mexico. In doing so, such large scale project, funded by various countries and entrepreneurs who would benefit from the location, can ship containers directly to the maquiladora industries located along Mexico’s northern border. Also, by proposing such a project, the people of Mexico would benefit by having jobs in their own country while the 49 billion dollar fence proposed by the US can be eliminated.

[THESIS]

CASINO

LOCATION Commerce, CA Aprox. 6.5Miles South East of Downtown Los Angeles.

CRIMINAL TYPE

REQUIREMENTS Design an Indian Gaming Casino that allows Gambling within the city boundaries of Los Angeles. ABOUT The Basic Premise for my thesis is based on graffiti and its symbiotic relationship with Architecture. In doing so, I proposed the construction of an Indian Gaming casino designed under the principles that graffiti artists use to create works of graffiti. The thesis then begins to research the ideas of local culture, timed sequences, the notion of territoriality and boundaries, as well as fusion of programs, and the creation of a phenomenon.

.

Along the South-west portion of the site, represented with an orange dashed line, rests one of Los Angeles’ many freeways. The interstate 5 freeway running along the site not only represents an opportunity for any project to be developed, but it also represents an idea that can be explored given Los Angeles’ car culture, freeway grids, and city lifestyle.

175.00

The project which I explored for my thesis takes the 1.5 mile stretch of freeway and begins to inform the visual connection that can be made from the freeway to the site while traveling through the freeway at 5 miles per hour or 70 miles per hour. The project then begins to make a more in depth connection between both traveling vehicle and the site by directly linking a ramp and the site together. The marriage between the two is carefully composed in such a way that the vehicle continuously goes through a series of systems that take it to a stand still inside the casino space itself.

By deliberately maneuvering vehicles into the casinos floor space, the fusion caused by both programs in a city like that of Los Angeles would cause a phenomenon where people would experience the space and imagine endless possibilities where luxury cars are displayed, sold, or traded through forms of gambling. .00

WORLD SUSTAINABILITY

CENTER

LOCATION Afsluitdijk, Netherlands REQUIREMENTS The center is envisioned as a mixing-pot for educational, corporate and institutional interests where common goals can be achieved through collaboration and mutual investment. ABOUT The World Sustainability Center competition was by far one of the best experiences I have had as an Intern. Although I was part of the team during the late stages of design, I learned how to collaborated with other individuals and be part of an efficient workflow environment. In addition to that, I learned various techniques in terms of desinging, modeling in both 3d and physical form, diagraming and all other forms of presentation deliverables. January 21, 1986 [Hometown]

Huntington Park, CA [School]

USC School of Arch.

Born and raised in Southern California, Bryan Chavac grew up in Huntington Park and attended Huntington Park High School where he graduated with honors. Soon after high school, he decided to attend Santa Monica College for 3 years. While taking an architecture history course at Santa Monica, Bryan was inspired and attracted to the limitless possibilities that the field of Architecture had to offer as a career. Pursuing his dream, he transferred to the University of Southern California where he is currently in his 5th year of study. Working towards his Bachelor’s of Architecture at USC has given him the opportunity to explore his creativity and to learn and perfect the various architecture skills he has gained throughout the years. Studying at USC, as well as experience in architect firms, has taught him patience and hard work ethic during many charettes and allowed him to use his various skills while studying and traveling abroad.
