K

nown for some of the most sophisticated and catchy songs in the canon of popular music, Steely Dan’s blend of rock, jazz, traditional pop and R&B with erudite lyrics took “Do It Again,” “Reelin’ In The Years,” “Dirty Work” and many more hits to the realm of classic status. Steely Dan was formed by two college friends in New York, Donald Fagen (keyboards/vocals) and Walter Becker (guitar/bass), who began composing songs together as students, performing in school bands, on recording sessions and later in the backing band for 60’s pop hitmakers Jay and the Americans. The original Steely Dan group included Fagen, Becker, guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff Baxter and drummer Jim Hodder. Their de-

but album, “Can’t Buy A Thrill,” launched them with immediate hit singles and radio airplay and was followed throughout the decade by albums like “Pretzel Logic,” “Katy Lied” and “Aja.” Drummer Jeff Porcaro and keyboard/vocalist Michael McDonald also joined the lineup. Fagen and Becker split up and worked separately during the 1980s but put together an all new Steely Dan group in 1993, becoming one of the top international touring bands worldwide. Their first new Steely Dan album in 20 years, “Two Against Nature,” was released in 2001 and won four Grammys including Album of the Year. That year Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the years that followed, in between Steely Dan tours, Fagen

toured with his old Rock & Soul Revue co-stars Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs in a supergroup they called the Dukes of September. Fagen and Becker continued to release solo albums as Steely Dan focused on live touring, partnering on major shows with the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Steve Winwood and Elvis Costello and the Imposters. Becker died in 2017, leaving Fagen as the sole official member. Show-goers can look forward to this rare chance to be up close and personal with these musical legends, rocking along to songs like “Hey Nineteen,” “Deacon Blues,” “My Old School,” “Show Biz Kids,” “Glamour Profession,” “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number,” “Peg” and so many more.

andra Bernhard - actress, comedian, singer and author known for speaking her mind - brings forth a mélange of musings, music and whimsy at this special onewoman show. Her motto is “never boring j’adoring,” and, true to form, she offers up her commentary and critiques of celebrity culture and political figures in outrageous, colorful and creative ways. She has released several albums, offering an addictive amalgam of music and comedy. Starting out as a stand-up comedian in the 1970s, she is probably best known as portraying Nancy Thomas

on the ABC sitcom “Roseanne” from 1991 to 1997. She currently stars as Nurse Judy Kubrak in the FX drama series “Pose.” Bernhard is number 96 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 greatest stand-ups of all time, and since 2015 she’s been the host of the popular radio show “Sandyland” on Sirius XM’s Radio Andy. Bernhard is openly bisexual and a strong supporter of gay rights. Those lucky enough to snag a ticket to this coveted show will thoroughly enjoy her witty observations interspersed with classic pop music, jazz and blues tunes, as only she can deliver.

‘Peter Pan:’ a classic tale of singing pirates, daring swordfights and fantastical make-believe By Alison Elsner “Peter Pan” 2 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. September 20-29 Palm Canyon Theatre 538 North Palm Canyon Drive Palm Springs Tickets $36 and $32 760-323-5123 palmcanyontheatre.org

T

here are very few children – or parents - who aren’t acquainted with the tale of Peter Pan, following the joys and lessons as he encounters Wendy, Tinker Bell and Captain Hook. The story of Peter Pan recounts the classic J.M. Barrie tale of a young boy who refuses to grow up. As he seeks adventure in order to entertain the “Lost Boys” on the island of Neverland, Peter departs from the fantasy world and visits the real world. “Peter Pan” has become a cultural icon symbolizing youthful innocence and escapism. The story has resonated with audiences of all ages

since the early 1900s. In addition to J.M. Barrie’s original works, the character has been featured in numerous formats, including the 1953 Disney animated film, a 2003 dramatic film, the Broadway stage, a television series and many others. Barrie’s masterful story shines brightly with a rich score that includes such beloved songs as “Tender Shepherd,” “Never Never Land” and “Distant Melody.” A delightful musical featuring singing pirates, daring swordfights and fantastical make-believe, “Peter Pan” is a story that is filled with magic, whimsy and just a fairy dusting of heartbreak.

Morongo Thunder & Lightning Pow Wow Blends sacred traditions with modern appreciation of life and the earth By Alison Elsner

N

ow in its 29th year, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians’ Annual Pow Wow celebrates Native American heritage and traditions through song, dance, costumes and rituals. Many years ago, families held their naming and honoring ceremonies during these times. According to some historians, the word “pow wow” comes from the Algonquin tribe’s language for a meeting of medicine men or spiritual leaders. In the Algonquin tradition, pow wows were held for healing and success in hunting and battle. Today, pow wows are very much a part of the lives of modern Native Americans. They bring many tribes together in a social and festive atmosphere across every state in the country. Guests from every background and of all ages are invited to join the festivities; no one here is a spectator, rather every single at-

f you’ve traveled to Bangkok – or even if you haven’t – you know from first taste that this is authentic Thai cuisine. Savory flavors begin with appetizers like som tum papaya salad with shrimp and kanom jeep thai dumpling ($5.95$13.95). Soups include tom sum and tom ka with chicken, tofu, shrimp or fish ($5.95-$15.95). The eating expedition continues with entrees like roasted duck, pla lad prik whole catfish, pad krapow chili and basil or kai jaew Thai omelette ($13.25-$26.95). There are also tempting vegan and vegetarian options like pad puk ruammit mixed vegetables.

Thai means curries, and Talay has yellow, green, red, Massaman and Panang. Your job is to decide between chicken, beef, pork or tofu. Rice and noodle dishes include Pad Thai, Lad Nar and white and fried jasmine or pineapple rice. Beers, wines and sakes are available at $5$6 per serving. You might want to try the Singha Tower (three liters) for $48 before sampling the sweet sticky rice with mango or ice cream for dessert. O

ne of the most successful bands in rock history will be “Takin’ it to the Streets” as well as to the stage as they bring more than five decades of classic hits to fans young and old(er). This mega-group known for their vocal harmonies has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. Their greatest success came in the 1970s, ushering in their first era through 1975 that featured lead vocalist Tom Johnston and a mainstream rock and roll sound with elements of folk, country and R&B. Johnston was replaced by Michael McDonald in 1975, whose interest in soul music changed the band’s sound until it broke up in 1982. The Doobie Brothers reformed in 1987 with Johnston back in the fold, with

occasional contributions from McDonald. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. The Doobies’ career unexpectedly soared with the success of their 1978 album, “Minute by Minute.” McDonald’s song “What a Fool Believes,” written with Kenny Loggins, was the band’s second No. 1 single and earned the songwriting duo a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The album won a Grammy for Pop Vocal Performance by a Group and was nominated for Album of the Year. Both “What a Fool Believes” and the title track were nominated for Song of the Year, with “What a Fool Believes” winning the award. Among the other memorable songs on the album are “Here to Love You,” “Dependin’ On You” (co-writ-

ten by McDonald and Simmons), “Steamer Lane Breakdown” (a Simmons bluegrass instrumental) and McDonald’s “How Do the Fools Survive?” (co-written by Carole Bayer Sager). Nicolette Larson and departed former bandleader Johnston contributed guest vocals on the album. Audiences can expect to hear some of their most beloved tunes like “Listen to the Music,” “Jesus Is Just Alright,” “China Grove,” “Black Water,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Listen to the Music” and many others. The band continues to collaborate with other iconic groups like the Eagles, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Earth, Wind & Fire and Santana. “Long Train Runnin’”…we’ll say.

Duran Duran 8 p.m. Thursday, September 5 Tickets $115, $95 and $85 Agua Caliente Casino Rancho Mirage 32-250 Bob Hope Drive Rancho Mirage 888-999-1995 hotwatercasino.com

A

t the dawn of the 1980s, a group of young men in Birmingham, England, had a sound in their ears - one with echoes of glam, art-pop and dance. The band they formed quickly became a household name, and, four decades later, Duran Duran has sold over 100 million records, had 18 American hit singles, 20 UK Top 20 tunes and continues to perform to huge concert audiences around the world. Singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor have a way of fusing pop music, art, technology and fashion with a sense of

style and confidence. Hits include “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Ordinary World,” “Come Undone,” “Union of the Snake,” “What Happens Tomorrow,” “Girls on Film,” “A View to a Kill,” “Rio” and so many more. Their most recent (and 14th) album, “Paper Gods,” is the iconic British band’s highest-charting release in 22 years and has been hailed by critics and fans alike as their best body of work in two decades. Never losing the desire to innovate, they have proven themselves timeless, and they continue to stay ahead of the curve. Photo courtesy of Duran Duran

Y

ou probably know that 90’s heartthrob Nick Lachey (Jessica Simpson’s ex) is the lead singer of this Grammy-award nominated band, but did you also know that his brother Drew is part of the foursome? This renowned “boy band” got its start in Los Angeles in 1996 even though the four members originate from Ohio, including the other two bandmates Justin Jeffre and Jeff Timmons. They formed independently and were later picked up by a record label, rather than being assembled by a label or a producer. From 2003 to 2012, the group took

an extended hiatus, and now they’re back stronger than ever. They have sold over 10 million records worldwide and achieved eight top 40 singles in the U.S. In 1999, they won the Teen Choice Award for Breakout Artist. Hits include “Invisible Man,” “Because of You,” “The Hardest Thing,” “I Do (Cherish You),” “My Everything,” “Thank God I Found You” and others. The show gives us a chance to revisit pop culture of the 90s while re-introducing us to these talented adult musicians who bring a fresh and fun new perspective to today’s musical culture.

Discover where the curtains will rise this month By Gary Walker

I

f you’ve lived in the valley and hi-desert long enough and care about local, live entertainment, you have noticed the slow but steady growth of our theatrical companies and the variety of quality work they bring to our stages. Sunday, October 13, will be the Desert Theatre League’s next celebration of those companies and individuals at Sun City Palm Desert, but the tickets are sold out. There is a waiting list. I would tell you the nominations, but they would take up two or three of these columns. One of the companies that has grown and prospered, both in programming, patrons and

awards, is Dezart Performs Artistic Director Michael Shaw looks to his Chicago roots for inspiration in his programming, just as CV Rep Founding and Artistic Director Ron Celona looks to New York for his. These are not just generic productions they bring to their theaters. They also offer a lot of the heart and soul of those two magnificent metropoles of challenging stage works. Shaw says, “Every year I’m more inspired by the curiosity and adventuresome nature of our audiences. They really challenge me to find the best, the brightest and most original scripts possible. They’ve set a high bar of expectations, and we think this season will meet their hopes.” Shaw founded the company in 2008 and

will direct two of this season’s plays. He says that casting is still a major challenge since he likes to fit the actor to the role, with the ability to “be honest to the playwright’s words.” Like me, he’s a purist when it comes to that. Dezart has worked its way into a degree of financial success (theatre ALWAYS needs money) with half of its new season already sold, and expectations of 50% of their budget covered by ticket sales and the other 50% covered by donations. NOTE: Their fundraising effort is coming up soon. With Shaw’s 30-year acting background, he says he enjoys being an actor’s director, which makes those conversations clear, effective and rewarding. Here is Dezart Performs 2019-2020 lineup:

september 2019

curtain time • “Hand to God” by Robert Atkins, Nov. 8-17. This dark comedy and Tony-nominated hit is where “The Excorcist Meets Sesame Street” (NY Times). After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry in the devoutly religious, relatively small, quiet town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with his town’s pastor, the school bully, the girl next door and, especially, his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. (NOTE: Mature audiences only.) •“Daniel’s Husband,” written by Michael McKeever, January 10-19. Daniel and Mitchell are a perfect couple, perfect house, perfect friends – even a mother who wants them married. They’d have the perfect wedding, too, except that Mitchell doesn’t believe in gay marriage. A turn of events puts their perfect life in jeopardy, and Mitchell is thrust into a future where even his love may not prove to be enough. “Daniel’s Husband” is a bold reflection of love, commitment and family in our perilous new world. • “Sweat” by Lynn Nottage, Feb. 28-March 8. Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize, “Sweat” exposes the collapse of the American working class in the new millennium. • “Every Brilliant Thing,” written by Duncan Macmillan, with Jonny Donahue, April 3-12. The Guardian said, “A heart-wrenching, hilarious play…One of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression—and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see, full stop.” Visit dezartperforms.org or call 760-322-0179 for more information and ticket sales. Dezart Performs, 314 South Cahuilla Road, Palm Springs.

‘The Savannah Sipping Society’ Desert Theatreworks presents “The Savannah Sipping Society,” where it’s never too late to make new old friends, at the Indio Performing Arts Center September 6 through September 22. In this delightful, laugh-a-minute comedy, four unique Southern women, needing to escape their day-to-day routines, are drawn together by an impromptu happy hour. They decide it’s high time to reclaim their enthusiasm for life. Over the course of six months, fueled by laughter, hilarious misadventures and the occasional liquid refreshment, these women successfully bond and find the confidence in their own new lives.
