2019 BC Morgan Horse Show

Lynden, Washington May 30 to June 2, 2019

WELCOME & DEDICATION Welcome and Thank You On behalf of The Greater Vancouver Morgan Horse Association, I would like to personally welcome you to the 2019 BC Morgan Horse Show. Our goal is to bring together Pacific Northwest and Western Canadian Saddle Horse People at an event that fosters sportsmanship, fellowship, horsemanship, and fun. Albeit an AMHA 4 Star and a USEF rated show, our hope is that you will find both the venue and the event relaxed and enjoyable! This year’s show and program is dedicated to the memory of a horse that we have had the privilege to be at our show over the years, Okan Storm King (Meredith Bilirubin x Good News Priscilla). He graces our cover with Taylor Curtis, up, who had an incredible bond with him. He truly embodied the versatility and temperament for which the Morgan horse is very well known. We quote Mary Curtis in saying:

“Sadly we lost Storm King just two months after this photo was taken, while it was a very sad time for us and Taylor he had a wonderful life. He was a stallion until he was 10 years old siring 13 foals. He competed in 'A' rated Morgan shows including the MGN (Reining, Dressage, Hunter Pl & Trail) and also in Open Competitions in Carriage Driving, Reining, Dressage and Competitive Trail. He was a true ambassador for the Morgan, proving that it is still a breed of the versatile horse, not just a versatile breed. Storm King went to be Taylor's horse when she was just 7 and they had a fantastic bond. He helped her become the true horsewoman that she is. He was quick to remind her when she ask for something incorrectly and just as quick to give her great successes. He is missed everyday. Our greatest hope is that every little girl finds her 'Stormy' and learns the love and dedication for that special bond.”

A lot of thought and preparation has gone into the show, as we continue to grow, we inevitably experience changes both in the market and our show world here in the Pacific Northwest. We appreciate not only your patience, but also your feedback as we navigate through this journey. The BC Morgan Horse Show is so much more than a competition, but rather it is an event to help promote and sustain interest in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canadian Saddle Horse Industry. Our gratitude goes out to all of you who have come to support the show. In doing so, you not only have supported the BC Morgan Horse Show, but you have also helped sustain the future of the sport and the breeds we love. Thank you and best of luck to all of you at the show. Remember, life is not just about winning, it is about making memories. Peter Morrison The Greater Vancouver Morgan Horse Association

The Morgan Horse Justin Morgan was a teacher, composer, businessman, and horseman who had moved to Randolph, Vermont, from Springfield, Massachusetts. He acquired a bay colt, born in 1789 in Springfield, Massachusetts, giving him the name Figure. As was the practice of the day, Figure became known by his owner's name, the Justin Morgan horse. This colt was the founding sire of the Morgan breed, America’s first breed. The Morgan is easily recognized by his proud carriage, upright graceful neck, blended with soundness of limb, athleticism, and stamina. In addition, Morgan thriftiness and longevity have made this breed a good bargain for more than 200 years—easy to love and affordable to own. The Morgan horse is free moving and calm under western tack or elegant and aristocratic when ridden in English style. A tractable temperament allows the Morgan to excel when driving in single or multiple hitches. Companionable and comfortable on a quiet pleasure ride anywhere open skies beckon, working as a sensible partner in a long day of ranch work or endurance riding, waiting alert and ready to enter a show ring, or performing in formal riding disciplines, the Morgan is a versatile horse within a versatile breed. The Morgan horse agreeably adapts to his owner's lifestyle. This first American breed can be found worldwide. Reliable, loyal, tireless, and versatile, a Morgan becomes one with people with of all ages and walks of life and shares the mutual enjoyment in every equine pastime. An ideal horse for today's modern family, the Morgan will take riders with diverse interests through any competitive or pleasure pursuit. Whether you or your family requires a quiet mount or harness horse for a beginner or enjoys aggressive sporting disciplines like eventing and jumpers, the Morgan can be all this and more.

The American Saddlebred Historically referred to as the “Horse America Made,” the American Saddlebred has a long and proud history that can trace its roots to the naturalgaited Galloway and Hobbie horses which came to North America from the British Isles. These hardy little horses thrived and grew in the new environment, and through selective breeding the Narragansett Pacer was developed along the eastern seaboard. The Narragansetts were crossed with Thoroughbreds imported to America in the early 1700s, and by the time of the Revolutionary War, a horse called simply “the American horse” was a recognized type. These horses had the size and beauty of the Thoroughbred, but retained the ability to learn the easy-riding gaits. These animals were used for riding, to pull carriages and for other work. They were prized for a pleasant temperament, eagerness, strength and stamina. During the Civil War, their service earned them acclaim as a breed, and many of the Generals, including Robert E. Lee rode them into battle. As the war ended, horse owners began to enter their saddle horses into the show ring where they became stars because of their beauty, style and utility which was attained from the continual crossing with thoroughbreds and other breeds including Arabian and Morgan. Today, the American Saddlebred is still the ultimate show horse. With its neck arched and ears forward, the Saddlebred continues to dominate the saddle seat disciplines with its elegant and powerful high-stepping action and is not only a spectacle of beauty and grace, but also an intense athletic competitor. In the show ring, American Saddlebreds compete in five primary divisions: Five-Gaited, Three-Gaited, Fine Harness, Park and Pleasure. Each division has its own "look" and desired traits; however, all strive to meet the model of an ideal American Saddlebred. They are judged on performance, manners, presence, quality and conformation. In addition to the animated style and brilliance in the show ring, the Saddlebred’s willing attitude has made it a versatile breed allowing it to excel in other disciplines including dressage, combined driving and jumping.
