The Mouse

A computer mouse can have:  2 buttons  2 buttons and a wheel (like this photo shows)  3 buttons Two buttons and a wheel is the most common. They most often are connected to the computer with a USB port or are wireless.

Holding the mouse: Index finger on the left button, Thumb and little finger holding each side.

Using the mouse:    

Hold the mouse in your right hand. Use the mouse pointer to Point to something on the screen. Use the mouse to Click – try to right click and then double click. Hold the left mouse button down and drag.

Starting your Computer and Using a CD

Start up the computer: 1. Find the power button on the CPU. Press it. The computer will start to boot up. 2. Press the monitor power button to turn the monitor on. 3. Wait. The lights will stop flashing and the computer will stop making noise. 4. Now the computer is ready to use.

Use your CD: 1. Hold the CD carefully. Don’t touch the face of the CD. 2. Press the button under the CD drive to open the drive. 3. Insert your CD. 4. Press the button again to close the drive. 5. Sometimes the CD will play automatically. 6. Sometimes you have to open the My Computer folder.


Shut down the computer: 1. Close all the programs and windows on your computer. 2. Click on the Start button at the bottom of the screen to open the Start menu. 3. At the bottom right you will see the Shut down button. Click on it.

4. Now you will see the Shut Down Windows dialogue box. Click OK to Shut Down.

Don't just use the Power Button to turn off the computer. That’s not safe for the computer. But if the computer is frozen so nothing works any more, you'll have to reboot.

The Desktop The desktop screen has two parts:

Taskbar When you turn on the computer the first screen you see is the desktop. The desktop is a good place to keep your saved files because they are easy to find. Usually you can put your files in a folder on the desktop called My Documents. You can create a new folder with your name inside the My Documents folder.

Learn to use the Start Menu: 1. Click one time on Start. 2. Move the pointer up to Programs. 3. Move across the blue bar; don’t go up or down. 4. Move up to Accessories. 5. Move across the blue bar; don’t go up or down. 6. Move down to Word Pad. 7. Click on Word Pad one time.

Change the Desktop Widows allows you to change how the desktop is organized and how the desktop looks. You can move the icons on the desktop or change the desktop background picture.

1. Move icons on the desktop Move them around yourself: 1. Move the pointer over the icon you want to move. 2. Hold down the left mouse button. 3. Drag the icon. 4. Release the left mouse button. Auto-arrange the icons: 1. Right click on the desktop. 2. Move the pointer over the first menu item “Arrange Icons By.” 3. Move the pointer over the blue bar to the right and down to “auto-arrange.” 4. Click on “Auto-arrange.” Arrange the icons by Name: 1. Right click on the desktop. 2. Move the pointer over the first menu item “Arrange Icons By.” 3. Move the pointer over the blue bar to the right and over “Name.” 4. Click on “Name.” Arrange the icons by Type: 1. Right click on the desktop. 2. Move the pointer over the first menu item “Arrange Icons By.” 3. Move the pointer over the blue bar to the right and over “Name.” 4. Click on “Type.”


Change the Desktop 2. Change the desktop background picture 1. Right click on the desktop: This menu will open. 2. Click on Properties. This window will open. 3. Click on the Desktop tab.

Now this window will open.

4. Click on the picture you want or Browse to find another picture. *Browse lets you search your computer files for images stored on your computer.

5. Then click on Apply. 6. Then OK.


Control Windows & Use Scroll bars You can control the size and location of windows using the windows control keys and scroll bars. You can minimize (make smaller), maximize (make bigger), close, and scroll vertically or horizontally. My Documents Window:

Unit 2: Changing Windows Commands

Exercise: Work together in pairs to practice using these commands:

1. Double click on the My Documents folder to open that window.

2. Drag the window

to the top right corner of the screen. to the top left corner. to the bottom right corner. to the bottom left corner. to the middle of the screen.

 

3. Minimize the window.

4. Restore the window.

5. Maximize the window.

6. Size the window

from a corner to make it bigger. from the bottom to make it shorter or taller. from the top to make it shorter or taller. from the right side to make it narrower or wider.. from the left side to make it narrower or wider.

7. Scroll windows if they are too small.

 

For number 8: Double click on the My Computer folder, the My Documents folder and the AESL folder to open those windows.

8. Click on one window and then another to switch from one window to another.

9. Click on the task bar to switch from one window to another.

10. Close all the windows.

Save or Save As . . . A. The first time you save your document use Save As . . .

You will have to choose a location, a name and a file type: 1. Find a place to save it: Click the arrow to choose a folder to save your document. 2. Type a name for the file 3. Click on the arrow and then choose a file type like Word Document. 4. Now click Save.

Email: Electronic Mail An email message is a message sent through the Internet instead of sent through the post office. It is an “electronic” mail message.

An email address has three parts: BCNCstudent@yahoo.com

There are many free Email Providers to choose from, yahoo.com and gmail.com are two examples.

Register for an email account: 1. Open Internet Explorer 2. Type the URL www.yahoomail.com in the address bar

3. You will see the Yahoo Sign In Box

4. Click “Create New Account”


5. You will need to complete the online form information page that looks like this:

6. After you complete the form, WRITE DOWN your username and password in a safe place. You will need to use these to sign in to your account.

7. Click “Create My Account�
