EDITORIAL BC Stars Volume 27 - Issue 7 - Fall 2018 Editor’s Greeting Fall 2018 Welcome to the Fall 2018 edition of the BC Benz Bulletin. What a spectacular Fall we have had this year! I hope you have been able to enjoy it. I have even seen some top-down motoring quite recently. What a treat! This issue of the BC Bulletin contains our report on the very successful Show & Shine – the last major club event for the year. Be sure to check out the photos inside, and also learn a bit more about Tony Millikin, who has overseen the production of the Show & Shine for the past four years. Tony is the most recent recipient of the Regional Officer of the Year award from the MBCA. Congratulations, Tony. As our thoughts turn to shorter days and perhaps less driving in our favourite marque, I hope you enjoy this time of the year, and look forward to seeing you out and about. Happy motoring! ear Members, I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather and getting some drives in before winter fully sets in. I recently joined a good number of
members on the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive from Capilano College to Squamish. I was privileged to be Yen-Sen’s co-pilot in his W201 190e 2.3 16v. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, my grey market 1984/85 2.3-16V Cosworth has been undergoing major restoration at Orient Auto in Port Coquitlam. The process certainly comes at a price; however, the experience has been priceless. There’s a saying “it takes a village to raise a family” … well it takes a community to restore a classic car. My project couldn’t have started without the brilliant doctors at Orient Auto and the community of help from California. I’ll be breaking up the restoration process of my car into parts, starting with Part 1 in this issue. I hope to see everyone at our next meeting or gathering. Please review the calendar for upcoming events. Best, Matthew Peck President - BC Section

RUSTY WALLACE RACING EXPERIENCE AUGUST, 2018 AGASSIZ RACEWAY BC , CANADA https://racewithrusty.com/project/agassiz-speedway/
W
ell it all actually started on our Christmas morning with a gift certificate. I thought it would be great fun doing a few laps as a passenger in a NASCAR for excitement, but it was a long way off. It was soon something I would get prepped for as it got closer in date.
Of course, as is usual in my life, the date suddenly appeared! And it was at that moment that I found out it was not a ride along that I was getting, but I got to drive! Sudden excitement, and I will admit a little concern! (It’s been a long time since I had to activate the clutch foot!) Picked a Friday for my driving experience and headed out of town early so I could relax before everything started up at 4 PM. But hey, summer driving on a Friday in Vancouver can, of course, be a bit of a challenge. But giving myself 3.5 hours on the drive should have been plenty. I barely made it on time for
First view of the track
my driver orientation! The track at Agassiz is a short track, the whole circuit is only a Âź mile. I was told that some call this type
of track a “Bullring” (who knew?). In the aerial photo above the pits are in the center of the track, with pit exit to the upper right and pit entrance along the middle of the back straight. Trust me it doesn’t look very big in these photos and it isn’t. The straightaways feel like they are about 2 tennis courts long! Thankfully Rusty Wallace and team have this all worked out for it to be a safe, fun experience. But speed won’t be a major part of it on a track this short! Lots of coasting and braking so its all about hitting your marks to get anything completed. First off, out to registration. They take your information and suggest spending the extra money to do a ride along and I was happy to oblige. 3 laps around the track with someone who drives those kinds of cars around that very track helps to ease a little of the anxiety. More on that later. Next comes a discussion regarding Insurance. Making a mistake in a race car is not cheap. An “at fault” crash without the race insurance could have you leaving the track with a $15,000 bill. It was explained that a driver a few years ago at this very track backed the car into the wall and spent $4,000 before they left the track! Even with the insurance the first $1000 is the deductible - that you will still have to pay. Then off to driver training. There were 12 of us in the outdoor classroom. They cover everything in detail including some great stories of drivers’ experiences in the past. Since there are different trainers throughout the organization I expect that just sitting through the driver training sessions would always be entertaining! Specifically the trainers cover their expectations of you as a guest in the racecars. The day before, the staff have gone out and marked the track with tape showing the racing line. Green on the inside mark and orange on the outside mark. Stay between the lines and you will be in good shape. Not too close to the wall and not so far down the track you are not having any fun! Then they put a “T” at the apex of the
corner with the idea that you come down off the racing line to touch the “T” then back up to the racing line. Ahh, but there is one more set of marks to help you get the most out of your day. As you come out of the turn, a box has been taped on the racing line in green to indicate the acceleration zone, and another one in orange as you hit the end of the straight for braking. Trust me these marks help! They might be a bit conservative but could save you a big bill! Another lesson is “Left and Lift”. Remember the green line on the inside edge? Well we all have our own learning speed and someone might be faster than you out there. So in order to avoid inexperienced drivers making a mistake there is a left and lift command given to you and you pull to the inside, the faster driver goes by and you get the command to get back into the racing line and continue your experience. They also cover how to react in case of a spin, which is most likely in these circumstances to happen as you are accelerating out of the corner. It is not how you would normally react because of the walls all around you and the fact that the track is not flat. Banking exists in the corners and a little on the straights. If you react like you normally would you will be thrown up into the wall before you know it! Ok, so how do you hear these commands? Ear pieces are slid in between the helmet and your ears and there is a spotter who has control of the track. Apparently, he is also a mechanic and anything you break he has to fix. So you can imagine that he wants to be certain everyone is paying attention out there! Also covered are items like getting in and out of the car, starting, shifting and safety inside the car. Can things happen in these cars? Yup! While I was there a right front blew on a driver heading into the apex of a corner. All of us in the pits were impressed that that that driver kept it clean and off the wall.
Hood removed for some maintenance on a bent tie rod.
Getting strapped in for a ride along.
This one did not see any track time while I was at the track.
The Ride along. You climb into the car and get strapped in, get your helmet on and get ready to go. Don’t worry as there is someone there to help you get buckled in and get properly setup in the car. This goes for your driving experience as well. Remember you are sitting with a real driver, and trust me he has a passion for pushing the hardware hard. In fact, my driver had to be reminded that the car he was driving had to last the weekend and breaking it would not be a good thing for him to do! He still pushed it pretty hard anyway.
Out of the pit lane and whap! Your head snaps back and in a single lap you are smelling the hot rubber coming through the chassis, the vibration of that powerful engine being pushed hard along the straight and brake ‌.brake‌..down into the corner, back on the gas again. All the while this guy is chatting to you about what to look for as you are racing around the track, point to look for, suggesting how to feel what the car is doing under you, watching you to see if you understand the conversation. Kind of like driving down the road having a calm conversation with any other passenger, BUT you’re in a race car being driven hard! Driver pulls into the pits and you get out with your head still trying to absorb all the information given to it from the driver, and all the sensations that all help us be safe drivera. You know, that feeling in the seat of your pants. It is a lot to take in over just a few laps. You are standing there, helmet off, processing everything including the adrenaline and your number gets called. Time to crawl into the drivers seat! Again there is someone to help you get in, make sure the steering wheel is properly fastened to the car, your belts are tight, pedals within reach, shows you where all the switches are, helps you get those ear-

pads set properly and in my case a good smile and a “you‘ll have fun out here!” Then the window net goes up and the last thing he shows you is how to pull it in an emergency. Now you are alone with your thoughts, going over everything from the drivers training that feels like it was so long ago, the in-car “lesson” that just happened and all the while trying to manage the excitement with the adrenaline. Suddenly a figure appears before you, makes sure your video is working and your ear pads crackle with questions, “Do you remember how to get out”, do you understand “Lift and Left”? And after you respond to everything you get a pleasant “Have a good ride.” Back to your quiet thoughts, and the ear buds start again, “Car 55 move to pit exit”, and you think to yourself I sure hope I don’t stall this, when was the last time my left foot hit a clutch anyway? But you get there and wait for the instruction to move from pit exit onto the track. Manage the adrenaline again. Ok “55 up to the racing line” and you are off ! Now I don’t think I mentioned one thing in all of this. All cars are on the same channel. So if you screw up everyone on track gets to hear about it. But also when you are passing or being passed everyone is hearing the same commands. I thought it was odd at the time that there are no mirrors on these cars. But after reflection (no pun intended, ed.) I can see why they would remove them. You must trust the spotter. You can’t move your head enough to shoulder check. And how many of us in a race car would see the car gaining on us and maybe drive beyond our comfort or skill zone. Maybe not paying attention to the marks on the track because we are watching the mirrors. Yes, I got passed a few times. But I had a ton of fun. Would I do it again. Absolutely. Cosworth Resurrection ORIENT AUTO AND THE 1985 GREY MARKET 2.3 16V THAT SHOULD H A V E D I E D . Introduction (Part 1 of 4)
I
t’s a love hate relationship, if you’ve owned a 16v you’ll get it but for those that haven’t, this is my story. In 2013 I purchased and imported a 1985 ECE (Gray Market) 190e 2.3 16v from Jeff Wong, (aka Captruff on Instagram and 190Rev.net) into Vancouver, BC. This car’s life began in Germany, but quickly made its way to Japan before heading promptly over to the United States to its first of five owners. The build sheet for this car was unique, power windows, heated seats, sunroof, leather interior, and manual seats.
1985 ECE 190e 2.3 16v
According to my research with previous owners, the car was first imported to Texas and once state-side the car was modified with an Italian aftermarket air-conditioning system by Diavia. The aftermarket A/C system would later prove to be the start of a complete restoration. After importing the car to Canada, I drove it daily for a few months before it started having overheating issues. Unable to address the heating issues at that time, I decided to park and store the car. After a couple of years of sitting in a covered and secured parking garage I decided it was time to get this special 16v back onto the road. I decided to start with something simple, such as replacing the failed blower motor. The blower motor housing had been butchered from previous attempts at servicing the system. It was at this point I learned a w201 blower box housing and motor wouldn’t work. I was at a loss, nothing was working and I’d already disassembled the HVAC plumbing -- did I mention that the blower box was destroyed and couldn’t be put back on… at least I was able to start and run the car before I thought I was being clever in attempting to fix the A/C. Now the car was totally disabled. A good friend of mine convinced me to take the car into a shop before I became fed up and sold the car. He was right, I had reach a point beyond my ability to repair the car so I turned to Orient Auto Sales and Restoration. Once I decided to enlist the help of a mechanic, doing it right was my philosophy in beginning this project. However, finding someone who was able and willing to take on such a project here in British Columbia was difficult, until Sean Clark introduced me to Ahmad and Hady Gandomi of Orient Auto, Port Coquitlam. This is the beginning of the real story when stupid (Matt) met crazy (Hady).
