Running throughout the month of June, the Festival is a celebration of the inspirational arts, design, media and creative technology they produce. 02

Foreword

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

The Inspired Festival gives us a suitably striking platform to tell the city of Birmingham – employers, business leaders, entrepreneurs and the wider community – about what makes our University so distinctive. Bashir Makhoul

The Inspired Festival defines how Birmingham City University stands out. Our students produce innovative, ambitious, edgy – even controversial – work that is also practical and relevant. Drawing on the skills and inspiration of our teaching staff and the input of experts from outside the University too, the creative thinking and imaginative ideas of our students very often satisfies both form and function – producing results that can take their place in the wider world.

From beautiful videos to stylish clothing, from elegant designs to outrageous art, and from stunning photography to intricate engineering, the Inspired Festival shows the world what we at Birmingham City University know already about the talents and potential of our students. We tell them Be Epic Be Unique and Be Inspired. And they never let us down. I hope you enjoy the Inspired Festival 2016. Professor Bashir Makhoul Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Art

Birmingham School of Art’s exhibition is the culmination of three years of study for students on our Fine Art and Art and Design undergraduate programmes. From 11-19 June, our School at Margaret Street will showcase students’ work, presented in the form of a professional curated exhibition. Students will be on hand to discuss their work and that of the other artists.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

The work on display will showcase a range of media including innovative design, painting, drawing, sculpture, print, installation, film, photography, illustration, product design, fashion and digital media, celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students as they have flourished and developed as artists. Emphasising the individual student’s creative endeavours, rather than their responses to a set brief, this showcase demonstrates how the freedom to experiment gives our students confidence to develop their own artistic practice, without constraints. The work displayed is both imaginative and engaging, and will challenge, surprise and delight.

The exhibition also incorporates a prize-giving ceremony in recognition of students’ achievements, and includes a Sponsors’ Choice award of £500. This year’s sponsors include Savills, IKON, Spectrum, and Pip Seymour Fine Art Products.

“We’re delighted to showcase such a vast array of artistic talent. You can see how hard our students have worked, in the exceptional quality of the work displayed.” John Wigley, Course Director, BA (Hons) Fine Art

School of Jewellery

12

Jewellery

The Jewellery Graduate Shows take place at our School of Jewellery in the heart of Birmingham’s thriving Jewellery Quarter. This year’s showcase includes a diverse range of exciting precious and non-precious metals, timepiece design and gemmological investigation. Other unconventional materials have been explored to create stunning and original design work.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

The wide range of work produced by the School can be seen in the contrast between a one-off, handmade piece and batch production, and the use of traditional tools and equipment against cutting edge computer-aided design and modelling technologies, alongside the parallel activities of gemmology and horology. Previous works have included the works of many prize-winning graduates including: Rosie Kirk (AHCI Winner of Young Talent 2016) Hayley Beckley (Best Newcomer Award, British Craft Trade Fair 2015) Clive Taylor (National Award, Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council 2015) Isabella Liu (Special Award for Fashion Jewellery, Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council 2015) Kevin Grey (Goldsmiths’ Company Award 2014).

Our graduates have also gained international recognition and undertaken commissions or exhibited work with prestigious names such as The Royal Mint, The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), Goldsmith Hall, Saatchi Gallery, Sieraad, Inhorgenta Talente and Galerie Marzee.

“We are very proud of our students and this show is a fantastic opportunity to see their incredible creations, showcasing a range of techniques and disciplines. We are delighted to introduce you to the next generation of talented graduates to emerge from the School of Jewellery, and warmly encourage you to visit.” Jeremy Hobbins, Deputy Head of School Course Director, BA (Hons) Horology

Architecture and Design

Birmingham School of Architecture was founded in 1908 and has a long and proud history. In August 2015 the School became Birmingham School of Architecture and Design, welcoming the key disciplines of interior design and product design to the existing provision, which also included landscape architecture.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

To mark this significant year in the School’s history, we invite you to visit our end of year degree shows which will showcase student work from all four of our design disciplines, capturing design through the scales: landscapes to architecture to interiors to products. Within each discipline, students are encouraged to find their own place in their respective fields, declaring where their passion lies and defining their design beliefs, values and ethos.

“Our show opens to great acclaim and interest every year as we literally ‘put on a show’. The renowned vibrancy of our shows will be heightened this year as for the first time, Interior Design and Product Design will be showcased alongside Architecture and Landscape. This will be something you don’t want to miss!” Professor Kevin W Singh RIBA SBID NTF FRSA Head of Birmingham School of Architecture and Design

15

School of Fashion and Textiles

16

Fashion and Textiles

On show this year are clothes, fabrics, products, costumes and images created by the style leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. In addition, we present business concepts, trend analyses, stylish photography and graphic design; all essential in the global industry of fashion and textiles.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

Work on show has already been featured in the UK and around the world. It has been used in professional trade shows, exhibitions and events, demonstrating our belief in the value of working with industry and our commitment to an international vision of fashion and textiles. At the same time, the individual and personal journey of each student is represented by their final project work, giving rise to an amazing show of cultural diversity, social responsibility, imaginative practice, craft and personal artistic expression. This year will showcase the exceptional talent of students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Design, BA (Hons) Fashion Business and Promotion, and BA (Hons) Textile Design courses. This year’s students have pushed the boundaries of design and innovation to create

exceptional products, designs and campaigns, using knowledge gained through work experience and collaborations within high calibre international companies such as Iris Van Herpen, Preen, Adidas and Burberry. Look out for detailed bespoke outfits, with a finalist in this year’s Bridal Buyer Awards. This year’s students have raised the bar of creativity and truly justified the course’s Creative Skillset tick of approval!

“For the very best in contemporary fashion and textile design, business ideas and communications just come to our show. With the work of some 300 students on display there is something for everyone.” Professor Colin Gale Head of the School of Fashion and Textiles

17

Birmingham School of Media

18

Media

Birmingham School of Media’s showreel will celebrate students’ achievements, highlighting the very best work for each media specialism: television, radio, PR, events, journalism, web and new media, and photography.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

The professionally produced showreel will be shown at regular intervals throughout the Festival, with a further screening taking place at the Birmingham’s favourite 90’s film event on Friday 10 June at the Giant Screen in Millennium Point. New Technology Institute The New Technology Institute (NTI) is part of the University’s School of Media, and provides super-vocational, industrypostgraduate degree courses in video games development, digital marketing and film marketing and distribution.

The courses are partnered and codesigned with companies like Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Crytek, Mediacom and McCann. At this year’s Inspired Festival, NTI will showcase the innovate work its students have developed during their studies. So, look out for their games on display across The Parkside Building.

Acting

As an accredited, specialist drama school, we have trained professionals for careers in a variety of performance areas – behind the scenes, in applied settings and for stage, screen and broadcast – for 80 years. Since 1936, the basis of our acting courses has been learning through performance.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

“Our summer shows are performed by final-year students from our postgraduate acting courses. They are part of our theatre company which has established a reputation as one of the most exciting in the city. The company’s composition changes every year, so our seasons are highly eclectic, presenting a wide range of works – some challenging, some moving, some witty, but all with a freshness that comes from working with emerging professional actors”. “I hope you enjoy our performances”. It’s the last week of a massive international tour, and rock star Paul is regularly playing to 75,000 adoring fans. Everybody knows his name. He can have anything he wants. Simon Stephens’ lacerating new play creates a repellent and seductive world, and gives us a glittering moral fable about empathy, money and fame for our celebrity-obsessed times. Contains adult themes.

Ciphers is a smart and provocative espionage thriller that examines versions of identity. Beginning with the mysterious and untimely demise of a double agent, this story of spies, surveillance and deliberate ambiguity forces the audience to question everything and accept nothing while figuring out its deceptions, codes and reality in this shadowy realm.

Music

Since 1886, Birmingham Conservatoire has been a place where talent develops, individual creativity flourishes and successful careers begin – all against the backdrop of one of the UK’s greatest modern cities.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

From our early development as the music department of the historic Birmingham and Midland Institute to the thriving international conservatoire we are today, we now have over 500 students on undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes, as well as a Junior department of over 200 students. We’re looking forward to moving to our brand new, state-of-the-art home at the University’s City Centre Campus in 2017, and are thrilled to offer such an exciting programme of events this summer as we say goodbye to our beloved Adrian Boult Hall as part of the City of Sounds Festival. www.bcu.ac.uk/conservatoire

Creative Writing

The Inspired Festival will see the launch of this year’s School of English Creative Writing Anthology, which includes contributions from undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as staff, and features an enticing range of writing forms, from fiction and poetry to screenwriting and plays.

School of English Creative Writing Summer Show This year’s School of English Creative Writing Anthology will be unveiled on 22 June, and includes a wine reception. Our guest author Ruth Gilligan is an Irish novelist, journalist and academic currently living in the UK. She has published three novels to date, and was the youngest person ever to reach number one on the Irish bestsellers’ list. Her fourth novel, Nine Folds Make a Paper Swan, is based around the history of the Jewish community in Ireland, and will be published by Atlantic Books in July 2016 (UK/Ireland) and Tin House in January 2017 (US). Ruth is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham, and also contributes

regular literary reviews to the Guardian, TLS, Irish Independent and LA Review of Books. This year we’re honoured and delighted that Jim Crace – a graduate of the University who is admired worldwide as one of the leading novelists writing in English today is providing both the Foreword and extracts from his own published work.

“We are enormously proud of the work we do as a school, and this launch is the perfect opportunity to bring students, staff and members of the public together to celebrate.” Sarah Wood, Head of the School of English

Visual Communication

The School of Visual Communication Graduate Show celebrates the rich and varied responses our students have shown throughout their studies.

bcu.ac.uk/inspired

Every portfolio demonstrates the progression, creativity and hard work each student has made within a learning environment that encourages sound practice, transformative experiences, critical reflection and bold risk taking. The School’s outstanding theatre, digital and analogue photographic studios, editing and animation suites, cutting-edge 3D animation and film equipment, plus its MILO motion capture technology, are the launch pad from which our students’ imaginations take flight. The quality of our students is consistently recognised by industry, many of whom

have won prestigious design awards, such as the prestigious Royal Television Society Student Animation Award. The exhibition is a showcase of multidisciplinary work and an exciting and diverse experience.

“Graduates from across the School of Visual Communication represent the future of their fields. Reflecting the multitude of learning streams within the School, their work demonstrates the collaborative approach we foster across associated disciplines and via engagement with Birmingham’s vibrant creative community.” Nathan Tromans, Head of School of Visual Communications

Graduates

Meet some of our inspiring graduates… Helen Green Helen is a freelance illustrator. She first posted her GIF depicting the many faces of David Bowie in January 2015. It went viral a econd time following the singer’s death this year and has featured on websites including the Daily Mail and The Guardian.

“The project work I undertook at Birmingham City University helped me feel more prepared for projects in the real world. I felt that the tutors seemed genuinely enthusiastic about my work and were keen to push me out of my comfort zone and try new approaches. “It felt pretty surreal to see websites like the Daily Mail and the Guardian talking about my GIF, but what really surprised me and excited me most was having it featured on David Bowie’s official website and social media. It was far more strange following Bowie’s death, to see the GIF being shared in a time of shock and mourning.

32

Helen Green

“The GIF was shortlisted for a Shorty Award for ‘GIF of the Year’ in New York recently, which was quite bizarre. One of the loveliest outcomes of the GIF’s ‘fame’ was it being included in Adam Buxton’s show at the BFI Southbank called ‘Bug’. ”I started taking commissioned work whilst still at university. At the end of 2012 I worked on my first high-profile project for Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, which involved artwork that was printed on the side of large tents for a pre-concert tailgate tour called the Born Brave Bus Tour. “My clients have ranged from magazines such as WIRED, Esquire and The Hollywood Reporter to websites like Refinery29, Esquire Classics and ESPN FC. Other clients include Tumblr, StudioCanal and Sky Arts. I also sell my work through Society6, Art Rookie and my own Big Cartel shop.”

Tom Chapman

Tom Chapman Tom Chapman graduated with a First Class award in BMus (Hons) Jazz in 2007. His main project is now The Urban Folk Quartet, a band that tours the UK and is set to release its fourth album this year.

“The fact that, while completing my jazz degree, I was able to explore other musical avenues with support and in many cases encouragement from Birmingham Conservatoire was crucial in my starting the career I enjoy today. “Joe Broughton’s Conservatoire Folk Ensemble opened up myriad opportunities for me, teaching me about the craft and graft of stagecraft and gigging. Joe is my main musical accomplice to this day and I can’t imagine where I would be now without having joined the Folk Ensemble.

Betty Jackson

“I have particularly fond memories of my lessons with the late ony Levin, whose approach greatly affected me as a player and a person, and I think of his teaching often. The student and local jam session and gig promotion scene that grew up around the jazz course, in conjunction with the excellent provision from Tony Dudley Evans, made for an extremely exciting environment to be a student in.

Glittering alumni include: Novelist Jim Crace; Alfred Bestall, illustrator of Rupert Bear; comedian Frank Skinner; fashion designer Betty Jackson; Capital FM and former Clothes Show presenter Margherita Taylor, and X-Factor 2007 runner-up Rhydian Roberts. Laura Mvula, multi-award nominated musician (MOBOs, Mercury Prize, Brits) Catherine Tydlesley, Eva Price on Coronation Street, Helen George, star of Call the Midwife and 2015’s Strictly Come Dancing
