Programme Philosophy Students on this programme have been equipped with the knowledge to understand how creative and effective design can enrich human experience and human environment. There has been a vocational emphasis on how creative, analytical, intellectual and expressive communication skills has enabled these attributes to flourish via a structured, supportive learning environment. Throughout the programme and the various levels of study these graduates have been encouraged to build upon their understanding of the importance of being socially and culturally aware as a designer and/or maker. They have been encouraged to explore the creative process whilst studying human needs and desires in a consumerist society by pushing the boundaries of design through innovation and exploration of materiality. The programme aims to provide an educational experience whereby the interconnections between design specialities are exploited to complement the dynamics of the modern design profession, embedding entrepreneurial ambition as part of this process. Personal attributes and professional awareness have been developed through a programme that progresses from introducing the principal concepts of design methodology – both aesthetically and in terms of constructed reality, combined with the means and modes by which such creative and commercial pursuits can be communicated. Awareness of the diversity of Design and related fields, combined with experience of both individual and collaborative working practices, has helped to develop confident graduates who are enabled to creatively contribute to the future of design practice in the commercial context. Our graduates have been encouraged to engage with practitioners through studio based teaching and live project engagement throughout their progression from first year to third year. They have had the opportunity to understand a range of specialist techniques and gain a sound professional awareness. The diverse nature of disciplines within Multidisciplinary design have also been explored through collaborative opportunities throughout the programme therefore enhancing their transferable skills and enabling them to realise a wider range of employability opportunities.

BA (Hons) Interior Design This course covers the range of factors needed when considering a career related to spatial development and interior architecture. It combines art, design, architecture, technology and contemporary culture to develop an all-round appreciation of the elements which effect and combine to formulate interior spaces. Students studying this award are provided with an opportunity to explore how we relate to the architectural space around us, and with a focus on human need, emotional response, atmosphere, scale, colour, light, texture, acoustics and material. The course examines how interior spaces can have the power to inspire, relax, communicate or reassure the user experience. Interior Design is the link between architecture and the users of a space; it can often provide design solutions that can inspire, excite, relax, communicate or reassure the user. This course provides students with an opportunity to examine different sectors within commercial and residential interior design alongside an understanding and appreciation of spatial development applicable to exhibition and events in relation to design and space planning.

We continue to be very impressed with the innovation and quality of the responses to the briefs we set and look forward to working with BCU in the future.” We have also engaged with a number of companies setting up CPD sessions from surface materials companies such as Grestec Tiles and Vescom as well as representation from the Institution of Lighting Professionals. Our students have also enjoyed award success, in recent years being shortlisted for RSA Project Awards and receiving highly commended recognition, both here and from our students studying on the top up degree in Hong Kong. This year we have again had students shortlisted both in the UK and from Hong Kong. We have also just received the excellent news that Oliver Liddard, BA (Hons) Product Design student. Oliver Liddard (P.47) has won a paid internship (£2500 for 8 weeks) with Severn Trent Water as commendation for the most outstanding project in response to the RSA Student Design Awards ‘Water Water Everywhere’ brief, which asked students to design an attraction and engaging product that addresses water management. Oliver designed the ‘Rethink Sink,’ which is a household sink with a tipping bowl that reminds users how much water they use by keeping the water in the bowl and then tips so that water can be decanted into another bowl and reused for another purpose.
