OXBOW PUBLIC MARKET N A PA , C A L I F O R N I A
Oxbow Public Market is a specialty food marketplace showcasing local artisan food and wine producers, and located in Napa’s Oxbow district adjacent to the Napa River. The Market Hall, a contemporary low-slung metal shed building, and the terra cotta blockclad Wine Pavilion take their cues from classic agricultural building typology, and use preengineered metal building technology for their unique open-span interiors. Located in a flood plain, the building by necessity sits atop a podium, which created opportunity for a wraparound promenade encouraging market activity at the exterior. The exterior is made up of durable, industrial materials such as terra cotta block, board-formed concrete, steel and glass. The Market’s northern deck takes full advantage of the site’s proximity to the River.

MARKET SQUARE SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
Market Square, a two-building campus at the intersection of SOMA, Hayes Valley, and Civic Center, offers big space for even bigger ideas. Originally built in 1937 as the San Francisco Furniture Mart, Market Square has become a new destination for creativity and technology, integrating iconic architecture with state of the art modernizations to create an opportunity for companies that view the world a bit differently. The revitalization of the Art Deco landmark also includes a significant new retail vision and expansion occupying the ground floor of both buildings, as well as the urban public plaza joining them. This 60,000 sq. ft. renovation includes a reorganization of public circulation through the buildings, as well as an armature to accommodate high-end restaurants and retail tenants. The materials palette for this renovation is intended to blend harmoniously with the massive exposed concrete structure of the original building. On the ground floor, reclaimed wood walls, taken from existing old growth douglas fir on site, blackened steel portals, operable grillwork gates and a frank exposition of the bones and guts of the building lend the design a raw, yet refined personality.

The contemporary design aesthetic for SFO’s Napa Farms Market features juxtapositions of warm against cool, dark against light, rough against honed, solid against void. Artisan purveyors Tyler Florence, Equator Coffee, Vino Volo and others fill the market with high quality products, providing ”Food from the Earth for Travelers in the Sky.” The market hall features a wall system of buff colored terra cotta planks. A cork-clad ceiling, elm wood fixturing and shelving and concrete countertops and floor provide a tactile, earthy touchstone to the palette. Blackened steel and brushed stainless details introduce an industrial edge. The green color of the tile wall at the exhibition prep line continues in the project’s graphics and packaging.

The 50 acre Historic Guasti District in Ontario, California was once a thriving winery town founded in 1904, developed around what became the largest vineyard and winery operation in the world in its time. Framed by century-old trees, the renovation of175,000 sf of existing historic stone winery buildings will become the nucleus of a larger masterplanned food and entertainment destination. BCV Architects is designing the adaptive reuse of one 73,000 sf historic winery building into the Guasti Public Market, slated to also house a new winery tasting room, a destination restaurant, and the Lucky Strike Lanes & Lounge. While preserving and restoring the integrity of the existing stone building, BCV is creating contemporary and complementary architectural insertions at building entries, retail storefronts, and the interior Market framework to produce a dramatic backdrop for a dynamic and eclectic mix of food vendors and tenants.

BCV’s reputation for bringing a Western design aesthetic to hospitality projects in Asia takes a twist, with a new San Francisco restaurant that brings East to West. M.Y. China is a 7,000 square foot, 200-seat contemporary Chinese fine dining restaurant with exhibition kitchen, located in the Westfield San Francisco Centre. This innovative restaurant is conceived and operated by award-winning Chinese chef and television host Martin Yan. The restaurant is designed as a reflection of Chef Yan’s life and experiences, and centers on the social celebrations associated with enjoying Chinese food. The kitchen is turned inside-out to blend the cooking and dining environments, and to create a theatrical backdrop to the dining experience. Dramatic wok cookery and noodle pulling take center stage, with colorful ingredients and meticulous stacks of serveware framed as display elements. The design blends patterns, textures, and materials found in China in a distinctly modern American way, in the use of various tones and textures of stone, wood, porcelain and steel.

Crush 29 is a 9,000 square foot wine-focused restaurant that looks to the Napa Valley for design inspiration. The complete experience begins on approach to the restaurant’s exterior entry, allowing the tone of the environment and experience to be set well before one steps through the doors. The simple and timeless facade, made of Napa Valley Tufa Stone, reflects the restaurant’s unique connection to the Napa Valley. The centerpiece of the restaurant is the circular bar lighted by a sculptural element fashioned from thousands of mica disks, each unique in its color and translucence. The interior of the restaurant continues the wine country theme, with rounded booths fashioned like wine barrels, rustic stone walls and floors, and several fireplaces. Two wine caves serve as private function rooms for up to 50, and the wine library serves as a smaller private dining room.

ANTHOLOGY SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
Anthology is a modern supper club located in downtown San Diego. The legacy of jazz is framed here for the next generation, with Jazz, Blues, Soul and R&B performers and seating on multiple levels. The club also features small lounges, with the warm, casual elegance inherent to Southern California. It is a unique venue, as dinner is served during the performance, allowing patrons to enjoy the simultaneous celebration of food and music. The long and narrow site presented an unusual shape for viewing a performance. Rather than fight the proportions, they are accentuated for dramatic effect by compressing the space and emphasizing its verticality, which creates sightlines that allow people-watching as well as viewing the performance. A dramatic sculptural concrete stair connects the three open levels. The interior design of the space blends wood, metal and strings to make one feel like the room itself is an active instrument. Bleached woods, soft ivory leather, blue velvet curtains, and shimmering metallic curtain reflect Anthology’s unique location in a seaside city.

ANGELINI BANGKOK, THAILAND
Both the challenge and opportunity in reinventing this complex, multi-level, 7,800 square foot Italian restaurant and bar located in the ShangriLa Hotel was the requirement to respect elements of the existing infrastructure as well as conserve where possible the scope of new construction. As a symbolic reference to the old spirit of Angelini, the basic bones of the existing architecture remain intact but are reconceived in a bolder, modern expression that plays upon the contrast of light and dark, hard and soft, old and new. A series of dramatic soaring new window boxes plug within the preserved architectural columns to define a new expression for the important riverside façade of the hotel. Within, against a cream and chocolate palette, illuminated amber toned onyx elements glow with warmth. As part of the Hotel’s larger master plan, Angelini is conceived of no longer as another fine-dining establishment, but as a distinctly more casual, hip, and sophisticated yet accessible riverside venue.

SCHROEDER’S SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
BCV was responsible for the renovation and rehabilitation of the historic German beer hall Schroeder’s in San Francisco’s Financial District. The renovation brings a modern feel to the 120-year old restaurant without losing the characteristics – such as the original rosewood bar – that made it a celebrated downtown San Fancisco institution. BCV worked with the restaurant’s new owners to reorganize the 5,000 sq. ft. space into two halves, with the front portion utilizing communal tables to retain a beer hall feel and the rear half taking on a more dining-focused atmosphere. The dining portion of the restaurant features an updated menu, with Cal-German innovations like corn and tomato spatzle, beets with pumpernickel and goat cheese, and a wiener schnitzel accompanied by fava beans and preserved lemon on offer.

ARIA BEIJING, CHINA
This 10,000 square foot restaurant and bar is conceptualized as the western expatriate's "home away from home" and is organized along the metaphorical spaces of a house. The ground floor introduces the strong axial organization of the project: a clear shot from the lounge bar through a fireplace lounge to the powerful form of the central staircase and wine bar. The upper level contains the main restaurant and continues the "house" theme with semi-private rooms around the crown of the central stair. The stringerless staircase rises within a mahogany enclosure. The structure's skin erodes from top to bottom, the upper floor shielded by solid panels, wine storage at mid-level, and an open stand-up wine counter at its base. Simple stylized forms, custom furnishings, signature steel-blue velvet drapes, and classical images mark the project aesthetic.

Sacramento’s celebrated restaurateurs, the Fat Family, engaged BCV to create an Asian bistro with a goal of elevating the typical American Chinese restaurant experience. This freestanding, 9,000 sf restaurant incorporated several program elements including casual dining, private dining areas, a dim sum bar, a retail/take-out food area and an exterior terrace. Inspiration for the architecture was found in the historic royal palaces and temples found throughout East Asia. Richly stained mahogany doors and windows, imported limestone counters, red mosaic tiles, integral color plaster, custom light fixtures and gemtoned ceramic pots lush with plant life all combine to accent the simple organized flow of the interior. An intricate hardwood screen carved by Bali artist Made Budiasa creates a unique backdrop behind the golden Buddha.

This urban sibling of the well-known hamburger stand in St. Helena anchors the front corner of the Ferry Building with 3,400 square feet of interior space and a 2,500 square foot patio. Updated and retooled to reflect its new urban waterfront location, the design still pays homage to the original Taylor’s with its simple clean palette of white and stainless steel, punctuated by an oversized red neon sign that beckons customers to “EAT.” A series of communal tables, with low four tops in between, gives the arched white-washed interior a dramatic rhythm, while offering a variety of customer seating options. The patio, with its abundance of picnic style seating, provides throngs of Taylor’s fans front row seats to the active pedestrian life at the Ferry Building Marketplace and the Embarcadero.

Stars Singapore brings to Asia the stylish elegance and exquisite culinary creations of the original Stars San Francisco. Sensitively inserted into the rehabilitated historic Chijmes building, and located near the famed Raffles Hotel, the 7,800 sf Stars accommodates casual cafe dining in the lower level, with a full bar, fine dining room and exhibition kitchen in the airy second level hall. A dramatic elliptical grand staircase forms the center feature of the cafe, and allows a sweeping entrance into the main dining and bar above. The upper level architectural insertions necessarily avoid engaging any of the historic fabric, with the main dining bookended by the overscaled shimmering furniture-like back bar to the south, and the exhibition kitchen to the north. The colonnaded east and west side aisles are organized into private dining-like table arrangements by use of sheer drapery panels. The iconic Stars poster art accents the restrained elegant architectural backdrop with a potent color punch. Belcampo Meat Co.’s Marin Country Mart shop expresses the future of sustainable beef, pork and poultry production in California by combining the traditional butcher shop with a restructured café in a dynamic dance of two programs in a single unique environment. The traditional butcher shop here is reinvented with a combination of ceramic and concrete tiles. The butcher counter morphs into the restaurant cook line and counter bar, while the environment changes to that of Marin walnut and earth tones. Charcuterie drawings adorning the walls speak to Belcampo’s commitment to artisan production. The design of the dining room and butcher shop both play off the dynamic interior spaces found at the Marin Country Mart– accentuated in Belcampo orange. Belcampo raises and processes its own animals and produce on a farm in Gazelle, California, with views of majestic Mt. Shasta. They are giving a new meaning to the farm to table movement. At Belcampo’s butcher shop and restaurant, BCV Architects have worked to give this concept a physical manifestation. BCV was the architect for Belcampo’s production kitchen and offices on their farm in Gazelle.

CAKEBREAD WINERY EAST ADDITION RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA
Located in the heart of Napa Valley, Cakebread is one of Napa’s oldest family-run wineries. The new 10,000 square foot addition blends seamlessly with the existing 43,000 square foot main building by ensuring a continuity of form and materials palette. The architectural style relies on a restrained use of natural materials and textures that harmonize with the surrounding vines and cherished vegetable garden. The main floor of the addition consists of a large barrel storage room, a light filled state- of-the-art wine lab, and a series of private tasting rooms, each with their own view to the vineyards just outside. On the second floor, the new Wine Club room provides dramatic views eastward over the grapes to Howell Mountain beyond. Continuing with the natural modern aesthetic first established by original architect William Turnbull, this winery addition was BCV’s first collaboration with architect Don Brandenburger, who designed the majority of the buildings at this Rutherford site.

This 5,100 square foot residence is organized around a majestic Blue Oak tree, which occupies the only flat portion of this one-acre site. With dramatic views of a Windy Hill to the southwest, the house is designed to respond directly to the natural features of the site. While breaking down the building’s overall massing, the various components of the house – garage, main house, master wing and guest house at the rear – form edges of a formal courtyard anchored by the heritage Blue Oak. The spaces of the main house simultaneously look inward to the quiet tree and canopied courtyard, and outward to the dramatic distant views. Tucked into the site’s hillside, and locked into the landscape by the great room’s loggia and terrace wall, the house conceals its story scale and allows for a poolside setting to be elegantly carved into the cascading terrain, shielded from neighbors’ views and the building approach.

Located in the hills of Marin County, this residence was built in 1906 by John White, the brotherin-law of Bernard Maybeck, with subsequent renovations to the house and gardens. The most recent garden design was conceived by notable landscape architect Thomas Church. The goal for this renovation and addition was to reinforce the design approaches of the original architects and to respect the character, proportions and detailing of the main house, while addressing lifestyle requirements of a contemporary family of five. The rear of the house was redesigned on all three levels with a light-filled breezeway added to connect the main level and the guest quarters. A roof access deck was enclosed and now functions as an exercise room off the master suite. BCV collaborated with the landscape architect on material selection and solutions to the challenging level changes at the garden. The new pool house and outdoor shower satisfy the functional needs of the historic circular pool, and a new outdoor kitchen elegantly provides modern day outdoor entertainment.

TREASURE ISLAND MASTER PLAN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
Built with bay fill dredged from the spoils of California gold mining, Treasure Island was the site of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition, briefly becoming the home of the Pan American “China Clipper”, and ultimately converted to a naval base until decommissioned by the US Navy in1994. Treasure Island is being transformed over the next 20 years as part of an ambitious transit-oriented redevelopment project to make it San Francisco’s newest neighborhood. BCV, in partnership with SOM, Perkins + Will, Mithun, CMG, and other design consultants, has developed an ecologically sensitive master plan with environmental sustainability in mind. More than sixty percent of the Island is reserved as open space, including a 20 acre functioning organic farm. The plan also locates approximately 10,000 residents within a 10-minute walk of a new Treasure Island Ferry Terminal, and creates approximately 200,000 sf of community and destination retail in a new Island Town Center. In addition to the master planning process, BCV is the design architect for the retail and civic portions of the Island Core development, which responds to the desire for sustainability by concentrating activity and transportation at a centralized hub.

To achieve these goals, BCV worked extensively with the Walnut Creek Planning Department, incorporating their planning guidelines and designing a location for a new city park within the block. In order to blend in with the existing city fabric, the project was designed in a series of discrete storefronts, reminiscent of more traditional main streets found throughout the country. As part of the development, an Il Fornaio restaurant with an open loggia, recalling the design and character of a classical Italian piazza, is sited directly on the park, which will become an integral part of Walnut Creek’s trail system.

The Corners occupies the southwest corner of the historic intersection of Main Street and Mount Diablo Boulevard. The design of this 33,000 square foot project has two main aims: the extension of the historic pedestrian retail downtown south and west, and the preservation of one of the few remaining valley oaks in Walnut Creek, dating from pre-Spanish colonial times. The Main Street side of the project is developed as 3 distinct 2-story buildings, the corner building designed with its entry as a sky-lit corner tower. A separate lobby tower entrance is located adjacent on Mount Diablo Boulevard. This lobby provides access to the second-story office space. 2 single story brick buildings frame a 12foot wide alley that leads to a small pocket park at the base of the Heritage Oak. The alley and the park are activated by the popular Va de Vie restaurant, in the eastern single story building. A public art piece by artist Olivia Kuser, celebrating the oak, runs along the west wall of the alley. Overall, The Corners helps knit together downtown Walnut Creek, strengthening the efforts begun at BCV’s design of Broadway Pointe, Plaza Escuela and Olympia Place.

BCV’S design of the three retail gift stores in Renzo Piano’s California Academy of Sciences building are integral to the experience of the Academy, allowing visitors to “take a piece of the Academy home.” Each store seeks to extend the themes raised in the design of the larger building, including the building’s role within the ecosystem of Golden Gate Park. The retail spaces include The Academy Store (2,173 sq feet) at the main entrance, The Lab Junior (1,330 sq feet) adjacent to the Planetarium and children’s education area, and The Swamp Store (337 sq feet) on the mezzanine level of the Steinhart Aquarium. The casework for all three stores is a system of boxes of varying widths and depths, creating a dynamic composition. The boxes are made of 17 species of woods that grow in Golden Gate Park, and are from trees that were locally salvaged. Throughout the stores, historic elements from the Academy are incorporated into the design, including an original library table, salvaged Steinhart Aquarium tiles and Academy scientific instruments.

Press Club serves as a retail store and urban tasting room for eight of California’s most celebrated premium-quality, smallproduction wineries and vineyards. The 9,000 sq. ft. venue is located within San Francisco’s Four Seasons hotel on Yerba Buena Lane, in the heart of the city’s most exciting new destination for dining, shopping and cultural arts. In addition to wine tasting, Press Club provides an exclusive retail opportunity for local and visiting wine enthusiasts and aspirants, giving customers access to rare libraries of wines and a full complement of current releases directly from the eight wineries -- all in a single, centralized location. The entry level’s retail display entices the visitor inside to browse, and then reveals a grand stair to a subterranean level tasting lounge. The palette of materials mixes warm, sustainably sourced woods with exposed structural elements, suggesting the partnership of the organic and the industrial that is the hallmark of Wine Country. Wine bottles themselves are used in innovative displays that bring color and light to the space. mezzanine level
