The actress, 85, plays a tough-as-nails grandmother in The House of Tomorrow
Your character Josephine is a disciple of inventor Buckminster Fuller. Are you also a fan? I was such an admirer of Bucky’s work. He died in 1983, so I felt like I was contributing to his legacy. Did you ever get to meet him? We were friends! Peter Livolsi, who wrote and directed the film, didn’t know that when he sent me the script. When I told him I had videotape of when Bucky and me went sailing, he almost dropped on the floor.
What was the hardest part of production? I had to slap Asa Butterfield, who plays my grandson, in the face. That was hard because he’s such a sweet boy. And the bugs in Minneapolis drove us all crazy! What was the most fun you had on the shoot? I brought my granddaughter Emily with me as my personal assistant. It was her first time on a movie set, and she was wonderfully helpful.—BRIANNE TRACY

A ROYAL REMEMBRANCE
The Royal Wedding may be less than a month away, but that didn’t stop Prince Harry and fiancée Meghan Markle from stepping out in London on April 23—just hours after Princess Kate and Prince William welcomed a baby boy (see page 42 for more). The uncle and soon-to-be aunt attended a memorial service in honor of the anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, a black British man who was killed in a racially charged attack 25 years ago at the age of 18.
The Prince and Markle greeted Lawrence’s mother and brother. Baroness Lawrence created a charitable trust, which campaigns for fairness, justice and equality, in her deceased son’s honor.

RICHARD GERE
SURPRISE WEDDING! TOP: CLAUDE MEDALE/CORBIS/GETTY IMAGES
RICHARD GERE IS MARRIED again! The actor, 68, and his Spanish girlfriend of four years, Alejandra Silva, 35, quietly tied the knot earlier this year. A source close to the couple says they married “weeks and weeks ago” and are “extraordinarily happy. They’re so comfortable with each other, have fun together and are looking forward to their future together.”
“What I love most about him is his humanitarian side,” Silva (in the Gobi Desert with Gere) told the Spanish newspaper ABC.
This is the third marriage for the Pretty Woman star and the second for Silva, an activist who is also well known in Spanish high society. Gere and Silva began dating in 2014 but reportedly met almost 20 years ago when Silva was a teenager and Gere borrowed a boat from her father to shoot a TV ad. There’s a new girl in Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson’s life: his daughter Tiana Gia! The actor, 45, revealed on Instagram April 23 that he and longtime girlfriend Lauren Hashian, 33—already parents to 2-yearold Jasmine Lia—welcomed their second daughter together. “Your crazy dad has many responsibilities and wears many hats in this big ol’ world, but being your dad will always be the one I’m most proud to wear,” he wrote. Johnson, also father to Simone Alexandra, 16, from his marriage to producer Dany Garcia, reflected on being present for Tiana’s birth. “If you really want to understand the single most powerful and primal moment life will ever ofer—watch your child being born,” the Rampage star wrote. “The respect and admiration you have for a woman, will forever be boundless.” —DANA ROSE FALCONE

life. It was feeling that someone was reaching out and showing me my true path.” For Gere the wedding opens a new chapter after decades in the spotlight—and some highprofile romantic ups and downs. In recent years “Richard has been much happier because he is settled, confident and doing what he likes,” says a source. At the height of his celebrity in 1991, he wed supermodel Cindy Crawford. They divorced amicably in 1995. “We’re friendly,” Crawford said of her ex on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in 2016. Gere went on to marry Law & Order actress Carey Lowell in 2002 after dating for seven years. They have a son, Homer, 18. “There’s nothing better than [being] with them,” Gere told People in 2007 of his family. But after 11 years of marriage he and Lowell called it quits in 2013 and went through a nearly four-year divorce that was finalized in 2016 after a bitter court battle over money. Now Gere and Silva are happily traveling the world, promoting their causes and splitting time between Gere’s homes in New York and Silva’s in Madrid. They spent Easter at the luxe Bedford Post Inn in Bedford, N.Y., which Gere owns, and were spotted a few months before at a local iceskating rink. “They held each other and kept each other warm on the sidelines as they watched her son learn to skate,” says a witness. Silva told Spain’s ABC newspaper that she has converted to Buddhism, like Gere. One of her favorite things about him? “He’s a very empathetic person.”

Verne Troyer (1969-2018) Under 3 feet tall, he found fame as one of the funniest sidekicks in Hollywood history: Mini-Me in Austin Powers
Troyer, said costar Mike Myers, was “a beacon of positivity.”
After minor stunt work pretending to be a baby, the 2'8" Verne Troyer became an international star when he played Mini-Me, the tiny clone of Mike Myers’s Dr. Evil, first in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) and then in Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). The visual gag was so obvious yet so brilliant, the phrase “Mini-Me” has been with us ever since. Troyer, 49, died April 21 of undisclosed causes, but the actor was hospitalized for alcohol addiction in 2017 and had admitted that sobriety was an endless struggle. Troyer, whose height was the result of a genetic condition called achondroplasia dwarfism, never found another role equal to Mini-Me—he was Griphook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone—but as a celebrity he lived large. He once recalled skinny-dipping with a model at the Playboy Mansion: “She picked me up and took me swimming on her back.” No matter whether his star was ascending or not, Troyer insisted on his dignity. On the final post on his YouTube channel March 18, he said that he resented being tapped on the head: “I’m not a lapdog. I’m a person.” —TOM GLIATTO PEOPLE May 7, 2018

Deejay Avicii Dead at 28 The EDM world mourns hitmaker behind ‘Levels’ and ‘Wake Me Up’ The life of one of the most prolific stars in the electronicdance-music world has come to a sudden and tragic end. Avicii, 28, the Swedish producer and deejay known for the 2013 hit “Wake Me Up” among other global chart-toppers, was found dead in his Muscat, Oman, hotel room on April 20. Though a cause of death had yet to be released at press time, in recent years he battled anxiety and severe health problems—including acute pancreatitis—brought on by the heavy drinking he used to cope with his high-octane lifestyle. “He was always honest about how he hated being a celebrity,” a source close to the artist, born Tim Bergling, tells People. “He turned to alcohol to make his social life easier.” The physical tolls forced him to retire from performing live in 2016, leading to a period of sobriety and perspective. “All he wanted,” insists friend and fellow deejay Laidback Luke, “was to make beautiful music.” —JORDAN RUNTAGH

Instead prosecutors say that founder Keith Raniere used the group to take advantage of women sexually. Mack has pleaded not guilty; her attorney did not return People’s calls for comment.

Octavia Spencer The Oscar-winning actress, 45, who has been vocal about how education spurred her success, joined forces with City Year to help students stay in school and graduate I grew up in an impoverished neighborhood, but my mother understood the transformative power of education. Had it not been for my education, I wouldn’t be where I am today. That’s why I teamed up with City Year. An album that has ‘megastar’ written all over it COUNTRY “You know what we need right now?” Urban asks at the start of “Texas Time,” a track tucked away on the back half of his ninth album. “We need a song about Texas!” It says something about Urban’s current musical direction that, for an homage to one of country music’s epicenters, he emphasizes a rif that sounds like something of Bruno Mars’s latest record. Following the countrypop successes of 2013’s Fuse and 2016’s Ripcord, Urban once again assembles a cadre of trendy Top 40 musicians for a set that impressively unites disparate styles. “Coming Home” splits the diference between outlaw country (it borrows from, and acknowledges, the Merle Haggard classic “Mama Tried”) and the en vogue electro-pop of Julia Michaels, who cowrote the song and sings on it. And with assists from Ed Sheeran and producer Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, the Weeknd), “Parallel Line” blossoms from mellow acoustic reverie into fireworksin-the-sky power ballad. (April 27)

Departing St. Mary’s Hospital in London around 6 p.m. on April 23, Prince William and Princess Kate showcased the easy confidence of third-time parents. With their new baby boy—whom Kate had delivered just seven hours earlier— strapped snugly into his car seat, the couple briefly greeted photographers and fans before heading home to nearby Kensington Palace. “[We’re] very happy, delighted,” William told the gathered crowd, adding, “We didn’t keep you waiting too long!” Of course, even with the smoothest births and the most dazzling postdelivery debuts, parenthood is never a breezy stroll—and those first steps out of the hospital lead into a whole new life and the challenges that come with welcoming a new sibling for big brother Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 3. Holding up three fingers, the royal dad admitted before hopping into the car, “Thrice the worry now.”

Three times the worry, yes, but also the joy—and the fulfillment of a dream William, 35, and Kate, 36, have long held for their family. “Three is a great number,” says a friend, noting that Kate “is one of three siblings, and it’s a good family size. On April 3 an eightmonths-pregnant Kate was spotted at Waitrose supermarket in Norfolk, where she loaded her trunk with groceries in reusable bags, picked up a plant with a 25 percent-of coupon and enjoyed the chain’s complimentary cofee. And she was behind the wheel on George’s school run just a few days before the delivery. Although the family has full-time help from nanny Maria Turrion Borrallo, they take care to be fully involved at home. “One thing with Prince William and the Duchess is that they are really hands-on parents, and they really take the time to understand the worlds of children and toddlers,” says Tessy Ojo, who has gotten to know the couple well through her work as CEO of the Diana Award charity, which honors young people carrying on the philanthropic legacy of William’s mother, Princess Diana, who died in 1997. But even Diana, who relished everyday experiences with her boys like visits to McDonald’s and theme parks, relied on more household help than Kate. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward notes how the housekeeper at Highgrove House recalled that when young William or Harry was sick over his bed, “Charles and Diana had to change the sheets, and they didn’t even know where the clean sheets were. The new baby will also have a cousin his own age to play with. It’s fantastic for them all.” Another Bucklebury villager notes that the excitement around the third baby is “more subdued” than with firstborn George or first daughter Charlotte. “Hopefully this little boy will be able to live a little more outside the limelight,” says the villager. “We look forward to seeing him in the local park.” But apart from Meghan and Harry’s wedding and perhaps Queen Elizabeth’s oicial 92nd-birthday celebration on June 9, Trooping the Colour, Kate’s public duties will take a backseat until fall, Palace sources say. “Her focus will be on her young family through then,” notes a royal source. Courage onFlight 1380 AS THE PILOT STRUGGLED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING, A REALTOR, A FIREFIGHTER, A NURSE AND A PROFESSOR FOUGHT TO SAVE A LIFE By JOHNNY DODD Just as Southwest Flight 1380 hit cruising altitude
en route from New York to Dallas on April 17, Hollie Mackey put down the book she was reading, unbuckled her seat belt and was about to go to the bathroom—when a flight attendant announced that passengers should fasten their seat belts and prepare for turbulence. Sliding back into seat 14C on the aisle, Mackey exchanged a knowing glance with Jennifer Riordan, who had also been reading and was seated next to the window in 14A. “We gave each other one of those ‘Oh great, it’s going to

be one of those flights’ looks,” remembers Mackey, 42, a seasoned traveler. “But I suddenly got a strange foreboding feeling at that point. . . . Things just didn’t feel right that day.” Minutes later, Mackey’s worst premonitions came to life when a turbine blade inside the 737’s left engine tore apart, sending shrapnel into the plane’s fuselage and shattering the window next to Riordan, who was pulled partially out of the plane as the cabin depressurized. Sadly, Riordan, a 43-year-old banking executive

from New Mexico, ultimately died from her injuries, becoming the first fatality on a U.S. commercial airliner since 2009. But in the midst of the tragedy five strangers on the plane demonstrated a level of courage and compassion that no one aboard will soon forget. Mackeyandthree other passengers—Andrew Needum, 34, a firefighter from Celina, Texas; Tim McGinty, 49, a Brandon, Texas, ranch Realtor; and Peggy Phillips, 68, a retired nurse from Dallas—all fought valiantly to save the dying Riordan while pilot Tammie Jo Shults masterfully guided the twinengine plane and its 149 passengers and crew members to an emergency landing at the Philadelphia International Airport. “Without a doubt,” says passenger Kristopher Johnson, “those individuals are heroes.” Bravery was the last thing on Mackey’s mind following the engine’s explosion, which she describes as “a very loud boom.” Confused and scared, she felt the temperature turn ice cold as the plunge in pressure filled the cabin with clouds of debris. “The oxygen masks dropped down,” recalls Mackey, an associate professor of women’s and gender studies at the University of Oklahoma, “and I turned to look at Jennifer, [who] was already out of the plane.” Once she’d helped the young girl seated between her and Riordan with her mask, Mackey says, “I wrapped my arm around Jennifer’s waist and tried to pull her in. The little girl did too, but because of the altitude and the pressure, we couldn’t move her at all. It was terrifying. It was such Riordan in a recent Facebook post. Remembering the Victim of Flight 1380: Jennifer Riordan Nearly 1,000 people attended the memorial service for Jennifer Riordan, 43, who died of injuries sustained aboard Southwest Flight 1380. “Jennifer’s vibrancy, passion and love infused our community and reached across our country,” her family said in a statement. “Her impact on everything and everyone she touched can never be fully measured. She is the bedrock of our family.” Married to Michael Riordan, a former COO of the city of Albuquerque, and the mother of daughter Averie, 12, and son Joshua, 10, Riordan was a vice president for community relations for Wells Fargo and was well known in her community for her tireless philanthropic work. “Obviously God needed her,” her sister-in-law Marianne Riordan told the Boston Herald. “Hopefully she’s somebody’s guardian angel now.”

a helpless feeling.” Realizing she couldn’t do anything for Riordan—and fighting the pull of the pressure herself—Mackey clutched the girl close to her and kept one hand on Riordan’s back for the next several minutes. “I just wanted to be there for her,” she says, “to let her know she wasn’t alone.” Meanwhile, in the cockpit, Shults, one of the Navy’s first female fighter pilots, was trying to regain control of the plane after it had taken a steep dive following the explosion. “We have part of the aircraft missing,” the 56-year-old mother of two calmly told air traffic controllers. “We’ve got injured passengers.” As Shults brought the plane—which was leaking fuel—from 32,000 feet to a lower altitude, McGinty and Needum saw what was happening in row 14 and rushed to help, muscling the unconscious Riordan back into the cabin, where Phillips performed CPR. “God called me to move,” Needum said during a press conference. “So I acted. . . . I’m no diferent than any other firefighter in the country. For whatever reason it was me that day.” Despite praise for the selfless and courageous eforts that day, Mackey remains haunted by the ordeal that also left seven other passengers injured. “Jennifer and I both expected to be going home to our families and sleeping in our own beds that night,” she says. “And it just keeps running through my head that one of us didn’t get to.”

Healing & Happy THE COUNTRY SUPERSTAR IS BACK AND BEAUTIFUL AFTER AN ACCIDENT LEFT HER SCARRED By NICOLE SANDS When Carrie Underwood returned to the spotlight
on April 15 during the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas, the country star, 35, lived up to the words of her new song “Cry Pretty.” Tears flowed as she took the stage in her first public appearance months after revealing she’d taken a hard fall on the night of Nov. 10. (She tripped on the stairs outside her Nashvillehome while walking her dogs, leaving her with a broken wrist and “between 40 and 50 stitches” on her face.) “She had extensive reconstruction done around her mouth area and lips, but the doctors did a really great job, obviously,” an insider close to Underwood tells People of theAmerican Idol alum. Still, Underwood’s relief at the ACMs was palpable—“She was terrified about people seeing the scars,” says another source— though she has insisted that her hiatus from showing her face on social media wasn’t because she was hiding her injuries from the world. “I was lucky that when it happened everything was shutting down in the music world,” she told iHeartRadio’s Bobby Bones Show, though she explained some efects of the injury will linger: “I don’t know if I’ll ever be done talking about it, because it was an event in my life.” But she’s also ready to move on, announcing her sixth studio album,Cry Pretty, out Sept. 14. The insider adds that she has every reason to smile: “She looks gorgeous in person.”

hristopher Scott remembers being stunned when he was arrested in 1997 after driving through a neighborhood where a robbery and murder had just been committed. Says Scott: “I thought they were going to get it cleared up.” Instead the Dallas grocery-produce manager and single dad to two young sons was charged and convicted and spent nearly 13 years of his life in prison, serving time for crimes he didn’t commit. “You just wish the system hadn’t failed like it had,” says Dallas County Judge Robert Burns, who exonerated Scott in 2009 after another man confessed. Once his nightmare ended, Scott, 47, resolved to keep what had happened to him from happening to anyone else. In 2011 he launched House of Renewed Hope, a nonprofit detective agency run from a bedroom in his Carrolton, Texas, home to help others wrongly convicted. Its first success was winning freedom in 2016 for Isaiah Hill, 70, who served 40 years for a robbery he didn’t commit. The remarkable tale is told in the documentary True Conviction, airing April 30 on PBS. “[Scott is] a wonderful advocate for fixing the criminal-justice system,” says the film’s director Jamie Meltzer. Says Hill: “Christopher said he was going to do everything in his power to get me out of prison, and he did. I’m very grateful.” Scott credits much of his success in the case to the help of fellow exonerees Johnnie Lindsey and Steven Phillips. He met Phillips, 60, in 2009, at the courthouse on the day Scott’s conviction was overturned. Phillips, who had spent 24 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of a series of sexual assaults, was part of an exoneree support group and offered Scott friendship—and a furnished apartment to help put him back on his feet. After Lindsey—who himself had spent 26 years in jail for rapes he didn’t commit—heard Scott speak

publicly about his own experiences, the three men joined forces with a desire to help others like them. “It happened to us,” says Phillips. “The message we put out is ‘don’t give up.’” Since Lindsey’s death from liver cancer in February, Phillips and Scott continue the work the three began: with volunteer attorneys and lawschool interns, they review letters and e-mails from inmates for clues that might push a disputed conviction back into court, then track down witnesses. “It’s amazing,” says their adviser Michelle Moore, a public defender, “what they can find out that I cannot.” Now a grandfather of three, Scott knows the struggle of rebuilding a life after a wrongful incarceration. A dedicated dad, he missed —CHRISTOPHER his sons’ childhoods: His SCOTT oldest, now 29, is in prison for robbery—a fate Scott blames on himself for being absent. “I lost all this precious time with my kids,” he says. It’s a loss he doesn’t want anyone else to feel. “It can’t be disputed that there’s innocent people in prison,” he says. “Bringing awareness to people that can’t see it every day . . . that means the world to me.”

My Mother’s Alzheimer’s Journey IN A MOVING NEW MEMOIR, THE OSCAR-WINNING ACTRESS REFLECTS ON THE STRENGTH, GRACE AND ENDURING SPIRIT OF HER MOTHER AS SHE FACES THE CRUEL DISEASE By ELIZABETH LEONARD

The Seasons of My Mother, Harden reflects on lessons gleaned from Beverly’s life—as a mother, a creative force and a demure yet fierce wife of a Naval officer. And though Alzheimer’s has stolen Beverly’s memory, her spirit shines through. Says Harden, “The essence of my mother is still there.” In an exclusive excerpt, beginning when hints of confusion appeared during a family trip in 2007, the actress looks back on their journey. On the plane, Mom put her passport in her purse and sat back. Just minutes later, she went to double check where it was, and couldn’t find it. This happened several times before we took of. “I’m telling you something is wrong, Marcia! I shouldn’t keep forgetting this!” I didn’t think much of it; it seemed as common as misplacing the keys, but I was surprised at the vehemence with which she insisted on carrying her passport, and surprised that she was angry I had ofered to hold onto it for her. I ignored the small prick of warning that was going on in my brain. The warnings grew louder, and when she was in her early 70s, Beverly was given the devastating diagnosis. Over the last few years, my mother’s Alzheimer’s disease has mimicked an evaporating spill. That’s what the memories seem to do, evaporate. [At one point] we were on the phone and she said, “I’m sorry, but who are you?” I was prepared for it, it’d been coming on

gradually, so there wasn’t really a shock. “It’s okay if you don’t remember me,” I said. “I will always remember you.” Clarity comes and goes. Several months later, she said to me, “I know there is something important about you, but I can’t remember what it is,” and then later, “When you walked in the room, I felt something happy, like there was something about your face that was special to me.” Happiness too comes, and goes. Yet even as the pitch-black darkness of this hideous disease called Alzheimer’s advances, the core of my mom has remained the same. I think of it as her light that cannot be extinguished. One source of that light is ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging. Long before her illness, Beverly found self-expression in the art. She had learned that the roots of ikebana were associated with the ritual offering of flowers by monks to Buddha, and so the ideas surrounding ikebana were about spiritual harmony. It was as if the arrangements were telling a story, understand-

health HOPE FOR AN ALZHEIMER’S CURE? While 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s today, that number is projected to rise to nearly 14 million by 2050 “if we don’t find a way to stop, slow or cure the disease,” says Dr. James Hendrix, director of the Alzheimer’s Association’s global science initiatives. ing what she wanted to express. She wasn’t a demonstrative woman. She wasn’t one to wear her emotions and feelings on her sleeve (unlike me), and it was often from these weekly creations that I could discern what she was actually feeling. In 2012, Mom [who rose to be president of Ikebana International] was honored with a lifetime achievement award by her ikebana group. Seeing her in the midst of so many friends, all expressing how much she had changed their lives, it was clear that Mom’s legacy would not just be her children and grandchildren, but also the legacy of building a place where arts and harmony and peace and beauty could all come together. Today, with full-time care, Beverly lives comfortably in a home built in her native Texas by Harden’s grandfather in the ’60s. Harden, who lives in L.A., visits as often as she can. This is not a disease where one can “make lemonade from lemons,” there is nothing good about Alzheimer’s. But I will say that my beautiful mother has managed to teach me, even through the destruction of her capabilities and creativity, that there is such a thing as indestructible spirit. Pursue your dreams, now. Be in the moment, now. Fill your head with loving thoughts, now. These are gifts from my mother, especially poignant as the one place she lives most fully is in the “now.” She cannot remember the past. She cannot imagine the future. But she is fully aware of the now. Through a daughter’s eyes, I share her stories in hopes of keeping her legacy alive.

Since their escape from Ariel Castro’s home, Knight and fellow captives Berry and DeJesus “really don’t talk at all,” Knight says. “We decided to go our separate ways.”
I had survived the darkness, and out there in the light, a life was waiting for me. Yet at the moment [of our escape], as I would not learn until much later, I was closer to death than I realized. I had a fever that wouldn’t come down, my digestive tract was a disaster, and I was in so much pain that I would wake up certain I was being stabbed. Eventually they discovered I had clostridium diicile, a bacterial infection that can inflame the colon and eventually kill you. You get it from unsanitary conditions—bad air, dirty water, food handled by unclean hands—exactly the kind of conditions I had lived in for 11 years in Castro’s filthy house. The doctor actually thought I might die. I disagreed. I am not going to die today, I told myself, and I am not going to die tomorrow. I figured there had to be a reason I had been freed from that house, and I needed to live so I could fulfill whatever purpose had kept me alive. Estranged from her parents since before the kidnapping, she felt alone during the weeks she spent hospitalized. As her health gradually improved, her thoughts focused on PEOPLE May 7, 2018

“My wedding was the most extraordinary, interesting, heartwarming, explosive day ever,” says Knight (newly wed, above, and vacationing in Hawaii). “As I’m walking down the aisle this handsome man [I’m marrying] burst into tears! He’s so sweet—a perfect gentleman. I count my blessings every day.”
Facing Justice Ariel Castro (in court in 2013) was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years. A month later he hanged himself in his cell.
After her first book, Finding Me, was published in 2014, the stress of reliving her ordeal in interviews began to weigh on her. She found herself taking sips of wine throughout the day to numb the pain. She ultimately checked into OnSite, a Nashville treatment center that specializes in therapy for people who have experienced trauma. During a monthlong stay she met with counselors and other survivors and, as part of the center’s equine-therapy program, bonded with a horse named Waylon. One of our assignments was to tell your horse your trauma story. I told Waylon about the many bad things that had happened to me as a child, that multiple family members had hurt me. And as we kept walking, the horse stopped and turned to me like “You’ve got something else to say.” Something came over me to tell him everything. It just poured out. The abuse I sufered as a kid. The kidnap. The house. Gina and Amanda. All the confusion. The pain. The anger. This wasn’t like writing a book or answering questions on television. This was talking to a being who got it and didn’t judge me. Not a being who was going to ask me why I didn’t find a way toget outof Castro’shouseortellmethathe orshe would have done more. Waylon knew how to listen. And when I was done, I felt a whole new sense of who I am. I felt strong. “All I know now,” I said to Waylon, “is that I define who I am.”

what had become of her son Joey, who had been taken into foster care before she was kidnapped. Now she had no idea where he was. Lisa, my favorite FBI agent, came into my room and closed the door. She tried to break it to me gently, but the news was that the FBI had tracked down the family who had adopted Joey about nine years before, when he was 4, and that the family did not want their identity or their whereabouts known. Joey was alive and safe. I was glad and grateful above everything else. But did that mean I would never see my son again? I could feel my heart tearing apart at the thought. Lisa was able to arrange for me to write a letter to his new family. I wanted to let them know that what I wanted was not to take Joey away from them—I knew that wouldn’t be right for any of us—but just for him to know that I never ran out on him, that terrible things took over my life and kept me from him. I also wanted him to know that I would love to connect with him one day, on his terms. In the letter, I thanked the adoptive parents for their care of my son and asked if they would be so kind as to send me a photo. They did better. They sent me several photos showing Joey at diferent ages. It was generous of them, and I respect their requests that I show the photos to no one else. But I look at them daily. It gives me joy to see myself within my boy, and of course, I continue to yearn to meet him again one day. Several months after her escape, she moved into a small apartment in downtown Cleveland. But reminders of her ordeal popped up everywhere. I decided to get a job but everywhere I tried, I was told my “fame” would be a distraction, that people would take my photo or ask for selfies, and no work would get done. Potential employers were kind about the rejections, but they rejected me just the same.
New Beginnings
I also still confronted terrible phobias that Castro had drilled into me. I was terrified of motorcycle helmets because Castro had used one to limit my sight and my movement. And I was horribly afraid of cloth napkins. Whenever I would go to a nice restaurant, I would have to ask for a paper napkin instead of a cloth one. Cloth was what Castro would shove into my mouth so I couldn’t scream whenever he had people over to the house. Food smells could sometimes make me sick as well: the smell of beans, rice and meat mixed with certain spices brought back bad memories and could get me coughing to the point that I would actually throw up. It was all just another reminder that trying to be a normal person living a normal life was out of reach—for the moment anyway.

When Knight left the treatment center, she felt determined to create anew life for herself. She changed her name to Lily Rose Lee—Lily for the flower she loved, Rose for the mother of a childhood friend who had been kind to her, and Lee, because it was her son Joey’s middle name. She met Miguel, 39, through mutual friends on Facebook. I wasn’t optimistic about finding love after all I had been through. The whole world had heard the story of how I had been damaged by a filthy older man; who would ever want me after that? But that didn’t mean that I didn’t want to be loved. Everybody wants to be loved. I can barely remember what we said on the first phone call. Nothing very significant. It’s not like I got of the phone and shouted Awesome! But it was awesome to connect so comfortably and so easily with this guy I hadn’t ever clapped eyes on. Over the next weeks and months our relationship grew stronger. Physical intimacy didn’t happen right away. I had some fears that any intimacy might feel like what Castro had done to me, what others had done to me. We waited; we took our time. When it did happen, I realized I didn’t have anything to fear. The experience was entirely different. What made the diference was love. The pair married on May 6, 2016, the third anniversary of her rescue, in Cleveland. Starting when I was about 12, I had these big, beautiful daydreams about the wedding I would have one day. There would be huge bouquets of flowers, the groom would be handsome, I would look gorgeous in my long, white bridal gown, and everything at the reception would just sparkle. Later, during the years I was captive in Castro’s

When you’re confined and have nothing to do except wait to be abused, imagining the details of a wedding that will never happen is a survival strategy: Focus on the impossible. Imagine something so far-fetched it can take your mind away from the reality. And you never want to think about the reality because it’s unbearable. When it became real, I didn’t want our wedding to be about luxury or glitz. I just wanted the day to be a celebration of the fact that Miguel and I were committing ourselves to one another. As we recited our vows I could hear some people crying, some sighing. Whispered words of love floated up to the front of the church. “You deserve this,” I heard someone say. “She is so strong,” said another. I knew I was in the right place at the right time. This was my moment. All I felt was love.

PARALYZED GROOM CHRIS NORTON
AWalk to Remember 7 YEARS AFTER BEING PARALYZED FROM THE NECK DOWN IN A COLLEGE FOOTBALL ACCIDENT, 26-YEAR-OLD CHRIS NORTON WALKS HIS BRIDE, EMILY SUMMERS, DOWN THE AISLE By CAITLIN KEATING

“This was the most special day of our entire lives,” says Chris Norton, with Emily Summers at their April 21 wedding in Jupiter, Fla. “We’re in this together.”

It was the moment Chris Norton and Emily Summers had been waiting for. Just before sunset at the Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla., on April 21, the pair had taken their wedding vows and exchanged white-gold rings. The one thing left to do was to take their walk back down the aisle as husband and wife. But for Norton, it couldn’t have been more monumental. For the past seven years Chris has been confined to a wheelchair, paralyzed from the neck down in a college football accident, and he’d endured countless hours in grueling physical therapy with the hope of making that walk. Now with 177 guests fighting back tears, Summers took of her long veil, wrapped her arms around her husband and pulled him PEOPLE May 7, 2018

Celebration of Love “We were surrounded by the people who have been there for us through everything,” says Summers (cutting their wedding cake with Norton). “It was incredible.”

up out of his wheelchair. Beaming with pride and happiness, the newlyweds carefully made their way down the 7-yard aisle—one yard for every year since the accident, when doctors told Norton he had a 3 percent chance of ever moving anything below his neck again. “I can’t believe we did it,” he says. “We wanted this so badly.” But then Norton, 26, has a history of defying the odds. More than 300 million people around the world have watched the video of him—with Summers by his side—rising from his wheelchair to painstakingly walk across the stage at his graduation from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in May 2015. Inspired by the outpouring of support he received then, Norton set his sights on walking down the aisle with Summers, 26. “Chris has shown me that when you go through bad things, greater things can happen,” she says. That tenacity wasn’t always there. On the day of the accident, Oct. 16, 2010, Norton remembers lying on the football field feeling like “someone had turned the power of to my body,” he says. “I’m trying to push [myself up] of the ground, but nothing’s working. I prayed to God to please let me just get up and walk of the field.” Norton, who had just started his freshman year six weeks earlier, was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where doctors said he’d fractured his C3-C4 vertebrae and delivered the grim prognosis to Norton and his parents—Terry, 57, a high school director, and Deb, 55, who works at a registered investment advisory company—who had
driven in from Des Moines. “I had no idea what my future held,” says Norton. In August 2011 Norton went back to school, where hereadjustedtocampuslife.Butdatingdidn’tcome easily. “I wanted to have a wife and be a dad,” he says, “but I didn’t want to burden somebody with everything I needed.” After meeting several women, he says he “didn’t feel a connection with,” Norton didn’t expect to have much success with the online dating profile his friends convinced him to create. Of course, he couldn’t have been more wrong. In August 2013 he matched with Summers, then 20, who was studying at Iowa State University and, like Norton, had been raised in a close-knit family with strong Christian faith. “I was waiting for that girl who made me feel alive and someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with,” he says. Summers was drawn to his story and “how

There was no doubt that I wanted to spendthe rest of my life with her.” Adds Summers: “I felt like we’d always known each other. No matter what, things were going to be okay with him.”

Meeting Summers also gave Norton the push he
needed to make his graduation walk. “It was such an important goal for him and something we were going to do together,” says Summers, who persuaded him to take on intensive training at Barwis Methods, a facility for injured athletes in Plymouth, Mich. “It was incredible to see how motivated he was,” she says. “When he sets his mind to something, he does it. That’s why I fell in love with him.” The night before the walk Norton proposed. “The walk wouldn’t have been possible without Emily, literally and figuratively,” says Norton. These days Norton works full-time as a motivational speaker. He also works at his non-profit, the Chris Norton Foundation, which has raised more than $800,000 for people with spinal-cord injuries since 2012. Traveling the country delivering his speeches has given him new purpose. “It’s to give people hope and inspiration that they can overcome anything they’re going through,” he says. “I show them how I did it and how it applies to their life.” Life at home in Port St. Lucie, Fla., is just as fulfilling. Summers, who grew up mentoring underprivileged children, always wanted to be a foster parent, so when 17-year-old Whittley, a young girl she used to help, reached out in August 2016 and asked the couple to foster her until her 18th birthday, they agreed. “When we saw the transformation we made in her life, we knew it was all worth it,” says Summers, who made Whittley a bridesmaid at her wedding. Now, they’ve added five more foster children to the family—all up to the age of 8. “My life has never been easier, which I know sounds crazy,” says Summers, who left her job at a group home for abused youth to care for Chris and the kids full-time. “It’s because I love it so much.” Between day trips to Disney World and paint fights in the backyard with the kids, Norton also follows a rigorous daily regimen of training to improve his overall body strength, although he has accepted that he will never be able to walk more than a few yards, and even then only with

help. He also makes sure to teach the kids about dealing with adversity. “I have conversations with them about how my life is still great with a wheelchair and that things can happen to you, but you just keep moving forward,” he says. At the wedding that life view was on clear display as Norton glided his wheelchair around the dance floor with his bride and their five foster children nearby. “Life has been a roller coaster,” he says. “There have been a lot of moments where we’ve struggled. But anything is possible if we don’t give up. We want to be an example that life can be remarkable. I’m so blessed and happy with where I am.”

A PARENT’S RESOLVE “Jordan was a normal teenage boy,” McBath says of her son (inset). “He was just starting to figure out his future.”

A MOTHER’S AGONY AND ACTIVISM
MY SON WAS KILLED FOR PLAYING LOUD MUSIC
After her child was fatally shot, Lucy McBath vowed to keep his legacy alive by trying to stop gun violence. Now she hopes to take that message to Congress By J E F F T R U E S D E L L
outside Atlanta, Lucy McBath knew to speak with her 17-year-old son Jordan Davis from an early age about misperceptions he might confront as a young black male. “I told him,” she recalls, “people might not really see you for who you really are.” Tragically her son discovered that misperceptions can be fatal. On Nov. 23, 2012, a 47-year-old white man killed Jordan in a hail of 10 gunshots fired at the SUV where Jordan sat with three friends, all unarmed, outside a Jacksonville, Fla., gas station. The shooter, Michael Dunn, claimed he’d felt threatened when the youths refused to turn down their car radio. “I never imagined,” says McBath, 57, a retired Delta flight attendant, “it would be my own son.” The devastating loss of her child—a teen making plans to attend college with his friends—changed everything for McBath. Though she forgave her son’s killer, who is now serving a life sentence, she knew that she had to find a way to honor Jordan’s life. In 2012 she turned her sorrow into action and became a spokesperson for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, urging lawmakers to enforce background checks and pushing to raise the age for buying a gun to 21. Now she’s determined to make changes to legislation herself, by running for Georgia’s 6th Congressional District seat. Driving her determination is her desire to cement her son’s legacy. “I’m trying to live out what I was teaching him about humanity,” she says, “that we’re all account- —MOM LUCY able to one another.” McBATH

Tulum, Mexico! JUST TWO HOURS SOUTH OF CANCUN, THIS GORGEOUS HIPSTER HAVEN HAS BECOME A CELEBRITY PARADISE A DECADE AGO this “eco-chic” destination along a narrow strip between the Mayan jungle and the Caribbean Sea was mostly populated by backpackers and adventure travelers—manyof the thatchedroof lodges along the sands didn’t even have electricity. Now it’s a luxury locale that’s the antithesis of all-inclusive resorts, drawing A-listers like Reese Witherspoon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Drew Barrymore (who has dubbed it her top travel spot) and models like Alessandra Ambrosio who flock here for the laid-back yet high-fashion vibe. Tulum is also committed to sustainability: Eco-friendly visitors ride bikes or walk everywhere, and many restaurants and bars are open-air, most serving their meals on tables right on the sand. But don’t let the bohemian vibe fool you—these days the cost of a pair of yoga pants from one of the boutiques will rival anything you might find on St. Bart’s. —GILLIAN TELLING Visit the nearby Tulum ruins, which are surrounded by an excellent souvenir market.
WHERE THEY STAY Luxurious tented rooms at Habitas or thatched-roof villas at Azulik. $600-$4,000 pernight
WHERE THEY DRINK Casa Jaguar, where the bartenders mix drinks for people based on their “energy.” $11
HOW THEY CHILL OUT Six-day yoga and spa retreats at the Amansala yoga and wellness resort. $2,250-$3,950 perperson

Last time I was recognized
THE ACTOR, 36, STARS IN LOBBY HERO ON BROADWAY AND RETURNS AS CAPTAIN AMERICA IN AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
Yesterday. Yeah, the mustache [for his Broadway role] has definitely helped. It’s a pretty effective mask. But in New York, you really have a sense of anonymity. People are probably too busy, and even if they do notice, they don’t care.
Last time my dog Dodger made me laugh This morning he was so lazy and so funny. Some days he just doesn’t want to get out of bed. I think it’s
hilarious. But he really loves the city—we go to dog parks every single day, and he has a very active social life. I think he’s really happy.
Last time I sang out loud Oh, I do that a lot. And I know that can be annoying sometimes. I’m not, like, belting—but you know, I usually have some sort of ’80s tune going in my head.
Last superstition Are you kidding me? I’m doing a play; everything I do is connected to some sort of superstition.
I have a few unlucky pairs of socks that I won’t wear, but I’m not going to throw them away. That feels like cheating.
Last time I won something I won my fantasy football league [members include Chris Pratt, John Krasinski and Don Cheadle] this year. There’s supposed to be a payout, but I never make the guys pay. I just like being able to rub their noses in it. Reported by Kara Warner
