Maine master floral designer Mark Pellon of Chapel Hill Floral shares his step-by-step guide to designing the perfect boxwood holiday decoration.
Homemade holiday 2014
Photos by Barbara Frye, Maine Master Floral Designer
You will need:
Step 1
• Container • Floral foam for fresh arrangements • Boxwood clippings • Assorted ribbon, pinecones, and other decorations
Step 2
Purchase fresh boxwood branches from your local florist. These can be trimmed to size as you create your tree.
Step 3 Step 4
Insert wet floral foam into your container. The foam should be a minimum of 1 1/2 times the height of the container. 4 • home for the holidays by Bangor Metro
With a knife, carefully trim the top of your foam into a pyramid. Select a straight piece of boxwood for the top piece of the tree.
Photos: (Boxwood, pinecones, & ribbon) thumb, koosen, & Sergii Telesh/thinkstock.com
Select a waterproof container. Wrapping a container with birch bark gives your tree a natural-looking base.
Step 5 Step 6 Step 7
Insert boxwood around the perimeter of the container. Trim your pieces to approximately the same length for the bottom row.
Measure the tree from top to bottom to determine that the height and width are proportionate.
Fill in your tree with boxwood, working on a quarter of the tree at a time.
Step 8 Step 9 Step 10
Finish all sides.
Start decorating by adding pinecones and ribbon.
Decorate to your taste. Make sure to add a star on the top!

Tips for Cutting Your Own
Christmas Tree
Here are some
things to consider before hitting the road in search of the perfect tree.
Cutting down your own Christmas tree can be a memorable event. Doing some research before heading out to the farm will help ensure a good experience.
Choosing a farm • Call first to be sure your chosen farm is open, and that it has trees that suit your needs. • Check if the farm allows you to actually cut the tree yourself or if they do the chopping after you make the selection. • Ask if they supply the saw, wheelbarrow, and ropes for tying your tree on the car, and if they wrap it for transporting. • Pack for a day trip. Bring snacks and beverages because all that fresh air can make you hungry and thirsty. • Bring lots of hand sanitizer or disposable wipes. Your hands will get dirty. • Dress in old clothes and hiking boots. There will probably be snow on the ground, so have good treads on the soles of your footwear. • Bring heavy gloves to protect your hands. • Shake the tree well or have the farm do it for you. Critters and insects live in trees, so send them packing before you bring home some unwanted guests. • Bring a camera or make sure your cell phone is charged. You won’t want to miss a thing.
• Protect your car. Use a sheet of plastic, a tarp, or an old blanket over the roof of your vehicle to protect the paint and finish. • Lift the tree and place it on the roof—don’t drag it. Get help from an employee if the tree is very large. • Tie the tree down securely. Before driving away, tug on it several times in several different locations to be sure it won’t move while you are driving. 18 • home for the holidays by Bangor Metro

This recipe is best if dough is refrigerated overnight before baking, but can be baked right away if necessary.
1. Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together. Cut cold butter into half-inch pieces and cut into dry ingredients with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
2. In a small bowl mix cream, egg, and vanilla. Mix into the dry ingredients just until incorporated. Knead in chocolate, pecans, and cranberries.
3. Form into a 10-inch round on a greased baking sheet. With a sharp knife, cut the dough into eight pie shaped slices, but do not separate them.
4. Refrigerate overnight and then bake at 375 for 15-22 minutes until no longer doughy in the center.
