Bangor boys seek a return to success under first-time head coach BY ERNIE CLARK | BDN

All three courts inside Red Barry Gymnasium were brimming with activity during one recent night. Forty-two players representing Bangor High School’s varsity, junior varsity and freshman boys basketball teams were hard at it, preparing for the new season that began around the state Friday night. “Our philosophy is being positive,” said first-year Bangor varsity head coach Brad Libby. “If you miss a shot, then it’s on to the next shot. We want you to take that shot, because if you don’t have the confidence to do it then positive things aren’t going to happen.” Positivity is particularly important this season since the Bangor program has experienced some instability since Roger Reed resigned as head coach in 2012 after leading the Rams to eight Class A state championships during his 27 years on the sidelines. Bangor is 54-58 overall and 0-4 in postseason play since the departure of Reed — now a state legislator representing the Hermon area and also a volunteer assistant coach under his son Mark with the boys varsity basketball team at Hermon High School. Last winter, the Hawks finished 22-0 and captured the Class B state championship. Bangor went 32-24 in three subsequent years in Class A and has gone 22-34 in its first three years of Class AA North play under the five-class statewide format. Libby is Bangor’s third head coach since Reed left, following Ed Kohtala, now the head coach at Orono, and Carl Parker, who resigned shortly before Bangor’s regional quarterfinal at Windham last February after being arrested for operating while under the influence of intoxicants. The most recent offseason was complicated further by significant injuries to Bangor Continued on page 4

Daily News All-Maine first-team senior forward Matthew Fleming (dislocated elbow) and All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference senior guard Damien Vance (dislocated ankle). Nowhere to go but up, you might ask? The returning Rams certainly think so. Both Fleming and Vance, the latter ahead of schedule, are back and ready for Bangor’s home opener against Oxford Hills of South Paris on Dec. 11. They are among all 11 returning members of the 2017-2018 team that finished 9-10 after a 78-62 playoff loss at Windham. “It’s great to have the same group back,” said junior forward Henry Westrich, another returning starter. “Even with a new coach coming in and a new (offensive) set it’s still just everybody stepping up in the process. It hasn’t been a struggle at all.” Added to the returnees -- who also include starters Noah Missbrenner and Jason Smith — are four newcomers led by transfer Isaac Cummings, a senior point guard who led KVAC Class B last winter with his average of 6.56 assists at Brewer. “We’ve put in so much work and really progressed,” said the 6-foot-6 Fleming, who has committed to play next year at Army. “I know other teams probably have, too, but we have everyone back and we played every team close last year except maybe Portland.” A lack of depth was a major factor last winter as Bangor
finished fifth in the eight-school Class AA North. “All of those weeks really took a toll on all five of us who were playing most of the games,” said Westrich. Libby, a licensed physical therapist who spent six years as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Husson University after his own playing career at Brewer High and
Even with a new coach coming in and a new (offensive) set it’s still just everybody stepping up in the process. It hasn’t been a struggle at all. - Henry Westrich Husson, has nurtured that increased depth since being hired to lead the Rams in May. “The first main point was to get everybody to know me,” said Libby, who stressed the need for other players to step up with the injuries to Fleming and Vance. “It allowed other and younger guys to get that playing time and experience on the floor,” Libby said. “Having them playing with the older guys kind of brought them along faster.” Now with Fleming and Vance healthy, the Rams are relishing being considered a contender for a deep tournament run come February.

“Rather than last year hoping for a state championship this year I’m almost expecting a state championship because I think we’re that caliber of a team,” said Fleming, who is in his second year at Bangor after transferring from Oxford Hills. “I wouldn’t be able to deal with any less than that.” Class AA North will not be without considerable competition. Defending state champion Edward Little of Auburn has a first-team BDN All-Maine performer in senior forward Wol Maiwen, and while Portland graduated 2018 Mr. Basketball Terion Moss to the University of Maine the Bulldogs return 6-4 forward Trey Ballew and senior guard Pedro Fonseca. Oxford Hills features a talented senior class led by University of Maine-bound baseball pitcher Colton Carson, while Deering of Portland boasts senior forward Ben Onek, a BDN All-Maine second-teamer last winter. Bangor’s road to re-establishing itself as a contender -- and earning its first postseason victory since Reed’s final season in 2012 -- has a basic foundation. “If we can play defense every night as hard as we can and be a gritty team on the defensive end then we’re going to have a very successful year,” said Libby. “We have the offensive firepower, but we really need to dig in on the defensive end and make sure we’re taking care of business there.”

BANGOR LOOKS TO CONTINUE IMPROVEMENT Skowhegan, Winslow, Dexter, Southern Aroostook girls are favorites BY LARRY MAHONEY | BDN
It was a transition year for the Bangor High School girls basketball team during 2017-2018. Longtime assistant coach Joe Nelson took over the reins from Joe Johnson and the Rams had to replace graduated Miss Maine Basketball finalist Katie Butler and point guard Lauren Young (broken leg). Without a senior on the roster, the Rams underwent growing pains en route to a 4-15 season. “I expect us to be better offensively. Our shooting should be improved,” said Nelson. “We’re physically stronger than last year so that should help us in rebounding and we should be able to cut down on our turnovers and defend better.” He is looking for more consistency from the Rams, who have a
productive stable of senior guards in Sarah Hollis, Olivia Sharrow and Malorie Baines, along with sisters Rowan Andrews and Riley Andrews. Sophomore twins Libby Fleming and Abby Fleming, seniors Abby Houghton, Madi Drake and Caroline Fernald, and sophomore Maggie Cowperthwaite supply good size and athletic ability up front. Nelson said AA North has a lot of talented teams with defending state champ Edward Little of Auburn, Oxford Hills of South Paris and Portland leading the list. All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference selections Jade Perry and Grace Fontaine are be the catalysts for EL with BDN AllMaine honorable mentions Julia Colby (Oxford Hills) and Gemima Motema (Portland) as difference-makers to build around for their respective teams. CLASS A NORTH In Class A North, coach Mike LeBlanc conceded that his regional semifinalist Skowhegan Indians will probably be the front-runner but was quick to say a strong KVAC is a battle every night. The Indians (15-5) may have the most experienced team in the state with five senior starters. All-Maine second-teamer and KVAC Class A Player of the Year Annie Cooke headlines the group that also includes Sydney Reed, Sydney Ames, Mariah Dunbar and Alyssa Everett. And Jaycie Christopher is a potentially impactful freshman. Messalonskee coach Keith Derosby, whose 14-7 team reached the regional final, returns 6-2 All-Maine honorable mention forward-guard Gabrielle Wener and has an imposing front line in the 5-10 trio of Kaitlin Seekins, Emily Parent and Brooke Martin. Derosby said Lawrence, led by All-KVAC pick Brooklyn Lambert, is another contender. Hampden Academy won the regional title and wound up 19-3 behind one of the state’s most dominant centers in 6-3 All-Maine honorable mention and All-Class A tourney MVP Bailey Donovan. Also back is 5-10 guard-forward Alydia Brillant, a talented scorer. But the Broncos were hit hard by graduation. Chris Horr’s Brewer Witches have two returning starters in athletic point guard Kenzie Dore and second-team All-KVAC forward Becca Gideon.

CLASS B In Class B, defending state champ Winslow has a new coach in Brenda Beckwith but boasts plenty of quality returnees like All-KVAC choices Paige Trask and Weslee Littlefield. Littlefield’s sister, Bodhi Littlefield, Silver Clukey and Maegan Bernard were also key contributors a year ago. Trask and Bernard were all-tourney picks for the 18-5 Raiders, who held opponents under 40 points in 17 of 23 games. “The transition has been very smooth,” said Beckwith, who replaced Lindsey Withee and will continue to preach tenacious team defense. “It is a typical Winslow team: We have a lot of quickness, we can shoot well but we don’t have a lot of size. These kids are all super competitive.” Beckwith needs to develop depth. Hermon, Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor and Waterville are three of the teams expected to challenge Winslow. Hermon coach Chris Cameron graduated four starters off his 17-3 team but has size and a number of good, experienced players back in seniors Cait Tracy, Madi Curtis and Brooke Cowan, and juniors Paige Plissey and Grace Page. MDI (14-5 features seniors Maddi Candage, Julia Watras and Alexis Clarito and Waterville, under KVAC Coach of the Year Rob Rodrigue, will lean on AllKVAC pick Sadie Garling. “MDI will be really fast and athletic and Hermon is going to be really solid,” said Presque Isle coach Jeff Hudson.

CLASS C In Class C, with the graduation of Miss Maine Basketball Kolleen Bouchard and her 2,046 career points, four-time regional champ Houlton finds itself in a rebuilding cycle. That means Class C North runner-up Dexter, which took Houlton to overtime in the regional final with three freshman starters, is the team to beat. “Dexter has the best defensive team in the class and Calais has the best offensive team,” said Houlton coach Shawn Graham. “But Dexter also has some good offensive players in Peyton Grant and (Avery) Herrick.” “Since we’re a year older, we’re a little bit stronger, a little bit smarter and a little tougher,” said Dexter coach Jody Grant. Grant, an All-Maine honorable mention, can score from anywhere. She is complemented by fellow sophomore Herrick, a fierce rebounder who can also score, and Cheyenne Beem. First-year Calais coach Bill McVicar has a small but quick team that will be able to light up the scoreboard thanks to sharpshooters Lauren Cook, Olivia Huckins and his daughter Sophie McVicar. Narraguagus, which also has a first-year coach in Eric Beal, lost only one player off an 18-2 team and has seasoned veterans in Kylee Joyce, Kirstin Kennedy, Lanie Perry and Kaci Alley. Stearns is young but will have the talented Alley sisters, Katherine and Alisyn, to build around.

CLASS D With everybody returning, Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook (20-2) is a heavy favorite to defend its regional and state Class D championships. Coach Cliff Urquhart said Woodland, which lost to the Warriors 55-41 in the regional final, will be tough again and believes Schenck of East Millinocket will be good. Tournament MVP Makaelyn Porter and Kassidy Mathers, both All-Maine honorable mentions, headline a deep and talented SA team that also features formidable center Kacy Daggett, an all-tourney pick, Kylie Vining, Sydney Brewer and Katelyn Slauenwhite. Woodland center Emily Curtis (15 ppg, 15 rpg) was all-tourney as a freshman. Three other starters return in Emily Erskine, Sadie Smith and Brooke Russell. In addition to Schenck, Deer Isle-Stonington, which graduated just one player off a 17-1 team, and Shead of Eastport could also be in the mix.

HAMPDEN, HERMON, GSA ARE BOYS FAVORITES Woodland, Jonesport-Beals among 'D' contenders BY ERNIE CLARK | BDN
Three Class A state championships and seven regional titles in 14 years leave Hampden Academy as one of Maine’s top schoolboy basketball programs of the new century. With the backcourt tandem of senior Kory Winch and junior Bryce Lausier leading the way, rival coaches believe little may change this winter. “Hampden is still the class of the league,” said Cony of Augusta coach T.J. Maines. “No one has a duo better than Winch and Lausier.” Hampden, which finished 20-2 after falling by a single point to Greely of Cumberland Center in the 2018 Class B state final, must replace four-year starting center Ian McIntyre. “Many of the younger kids have gotten taller and our overall athleticism should be better than last year,” said veteran HA coach Russ Bartlett. “We will need Kory and Bryce to carry a lot of the offensive load but have a bunch of other guys who will be very solid complementary scorers.”
CLASS B The Class B season ended with undefeated Hermon holding the gold ball after a 55-34 victory over Wells in the state championship game. With junior forward Isaac Varney and senior guards Cody Hawes and Garrett Trask all returning to the starting lineup, coach Mark Reed’s Hawks loom as the team to beat again. “The championship has to go through Hermon, Maine,” said Maine Central Institute coach Josh Tardy. “They’re the gold standard. Hawes, Trask and Varney are all special and experienced, and then you’ve got good players around them. They play well together.” MCI may be among the more serious challengers to the Hawks’ regional supremacy. The Pittsfield-based Huskies return two All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference honorees in junior guard Owen Williams and 6-7 senior Jose Ignacio “Nacho” MontesValverde, and they’ve added sophomore Gavin McArthur, a 6-2 transfer from Gardiner who should add some offensive punch once he fully recovers from a dislocated shoulder. Another top KVAC team in Class B North should be Oceanside of Rockland. Coach Matt Breen’s Mariners are led by 6-5 senior Cooper Wirkala, one of the region’s most versatile players. Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor, the 2017 state champion, has consistently ranked near the top of the standings under coach Justin Norwood, and senior forwards Derek Collin and Andrew Shea should help the Trojans continue to contend. Caribou could emerge as a threat from The County under first-year head coach Kyle Corrigan, led by senior guard Austin Findlen and junior forward Parker Deprey. Orono, which earned the final preliminary-round berth last winter, should move up under new coach Ed Kohtala, the former University of Maine assistant and Bangor

Medomak Valley graduated only two players last June and returns plenty of contributors led by 6-foot-4 forward Gabe Allaire and guard Ryan Creamer, both seniors. Cony may have the division’s most dynamic player in 5-6 junior Simon McCormick, who spearheads a fast-paced offense and defense. Lawrence of Fairfield and Erskine Academy of South China will field senior-laden rosters, while Skowhegan has versatile senior Marcus Christopher and another 6-4 forward, junior Matush Prokop, to anchor the frontcourt. Brewer, a quarterfinalist last winter, has senior guard Brandon Glidden to lead a promising cast of underclassmen led by 6-0 sophomore Dylan Huff.
High School mentor. Connor Robertson, a 6-4 senior, is back after missing the end of last season with a knee injury. Sam Martin, a 6-6 junior, 6-3 sophomore Zach Dill and sophomore point guard Jason Desisto add to a young and talented nucleus.

CLASS C In Class C, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill may not be as dominant as its three state-championship predecessors with Mr. Basketball finalist Taylor Schildroth and semifinalist Max Mattson among its most recent graduates. But the Eagles should remain among the top contenders for North region honors. “Obviously we have some big gaps to fill,” said GSA coach Dwayne Carter, “but we have a solid core of players who know how to win and are used to doing it, which will be an advantage during the season.” Junior guard Caden Mattson, previously a defensive stopper, will add pointguard duties to his responsibilities while 6-3 senior Percy Zentz should be a prominent frontcourt presence for the Eagles. Other contenders are Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, Fort Kent, Houlton, Penobscot Valley of Howland, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill, Bucksport and Dexter. Mattanawcook returns three starters, led by All-Penobscot Valley Conference first-teamer Alex Brown, from a team that reached the “C” North semifinals. Other key players are center Cayden Spencer-Thompson and guard Nate Ring. Fort Kent also reached last February’s semifinals and has back 10 of its top 12 players from a year ago, including the inside-outside combo of senior forward Caleb Delisle and senior guard Cameron Jandreau among four returning starters. Leading Penobscot Valley are senior forwards Grant Kidon and Elijah Wood, both 2018 All-PVC selections.
Junior guard Keegan Gentle and senior forward Nick Brewer are back to pace Houlton, while Central Aroostook returns senior guard Ben Thomas and junior forward Brayden Bradbury. Bucksport has first-team All-PVC senior forward Tyson Gray to lead a veteran nucleus, while Dexter will rely on its persistent defense to contend for a home playoff berth.
CLASS D The Class D North race begins with the teams that battled for the top spot last winter, defending champion Woodland and runner-up Jonesport-Beals. The Down East rivals split their regular-season meetings before Woodland edged Jonesport-Beals 40-37 in the regional final. Many key players are back, Woodland with all-tourney guard Drew Hayward, backcourt mate Chris Plissey and forwards Alex Morrison and Sabre Lee Phelps and Jonesport-Beals with guards Ryan Alley and Adam Robinson. Greater Houlton Christian Academy did not graduate a player from last winter’s 12-5 team and returns a formidable front line in seniors Isaac Potter and Cole Winslow and junior Parker Brewer. Schenck of East Millinocket will be battle-tested with 12 regular-season games against Class C opponents. Veterans Travis Thompson and Colby Hannon will lead the Wolverines, whose underclass contingent is led by sophomores Tyrone Davis and Isaac Adams.

Ten girls to watch during the 2018-19 basketball season Annie Cooke
Senior, F, Skowhegan
The 5-foot-10 Cooke was a second-team BDN All-Maine selection last season when she averaged 15.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3 steals. Skowhegan coach Mike LeBlanc called his Class A North alltournament choice and KVAC Player of the Year a tough matchup. “She’s athletic, she can shoot from the perimeter or go to the basket.” Messalonskee coach Keith Derosby said Cooke “has a nice jumper, she goes (hard) after rebounds and she’ll get in passing lanes.”
Gabrielle Wener
junior, F-G, Messalonskee
The 6-2 Wener is coming off an impressive sophomore season in which she averaged 14 points and seven rebounds. She was alltourney and All-KVAC and was an All-Maine honorable mention. “She is a matchup nightmare,” said Derosby. “She can handle the ball, she can play inside, she can shoot the three and she moves well off the ball. She’s smart, she understands the game.”
Lauren Cook
junior, G, Calais
Cook led the No. 11 Blue Devils to upset victories over No. 6 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill and No. 3 Narraguagus of Harrington in the Class C North tournament. The 5-5 Cook averaged 14.7 points to earn a berth on the all-tourney team. “She is a huge threat.” Woodland coach Michelle Ripley added, “I’ve never seen anyone who can shoot from anywhere like she can.”
Kassidy Mathers
SENIOR, G, So. Aroostook
Makaelyn Porter
JUNIOR, G, So. Aroostook
The multifaceted Mathers was instrumental in Southern Aroostook annexing its first Class D state title in 23 years. She averaged over 10 points and four assists and was an all Class D North all-tourney selection and an All-Maine honorable mention. “She is the Swiss army knife of our basketball team,” said SA coach Cliff Urquhart. “She can pass, shoot, rebound and defend. She can guard anyone.”
The 5-10 Porter is the Warriors’ point guard and was the Class D North tournament Most Valuable Player, averaging 17 ppg. She was also an All-Maine honorable mention. “She makes a lot happen for them. Urquhart said “Her biggest attribute is her basketball IQ. She sees the floor well and always finds the open man. She’s a real good 3-point shooter but she can also take it to the basket.”
Peyton Grant
SOPHOMORE, G, Dexter
Grant made a dramatic splash as a freshman point guard, leading her father Jody’s Tigers to a berth in the Class C North final. She averaged 17 points and five assists and was an effective defender and rebounder. “She showed great poise and maturity at a very young age,” said Houlton coach Shawn Graham. “She hit some big-time shots in big situations. She has a knack for the game.” The all-tourney choice averaged 20.3 ppg and was an All-Maine honorable mention.
Bailey Donovan
Senior, C-F, Hampden Academy
The 6-3 Donovan had an exceptional junior season culminating in a Class A North championship. She was the catalyst for the Broncos with her dominance in the paint at both ends. She averaged 12.3 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocked shots to earn MVP honors in the Class A North tournament. “She is a great rebounder. She has good hands. If she wants to take a game over she can,” said Derosby.
BY LARRY MAHONEY | BDN
Emily Curtis
SOPHOMORE, F-C, Woodland
Curtis is another freshman who burst on the scene in eye-opening fashion, scoring nearly 300 points and grabbing close to 300 rebounds. She earned all-tourney honors in Class D North after scoring 57 points and averaging over 12 rebounds. “She is a dominant inside player,” said former Narraguagus coach Heather Thompson. “She’s graceful but she’s tough. She’s strong and she uses her body well.”
Katherine Alley
JUNIOR, G, Stearns
Alley was a key contributor in Stearns 16-4 season as she averaged 17 points per game. “She’s a real good scorer. She has a nose for the basket,” said Stearns’ Cullen. “She’s very quick, she has quick hands and she always guards the other team’s top scorer.” The younger sister of Husson University guard Emma Alley will get to play with freshman sister Alisyn Alley.
Cait Tracy
SENIOR, F, Hermon
The 5-10 Tracy is a small forward who was second-team All-Big East a year ago despite missing a half-dozen games with a broken wrist. “She has a great midrange game,” said Hermon coach Chris Cameron. “She can penetrate or hit a pull-up jumper. She has a real nice scoring touch around the rim. She sees the floor real well. She’s a game-changer.”

Ten boys to watch during the 2018-19 basketball season Matthew Fleming
SENIOR, F, Bangor
With plans already firmed up to play at Army beginning next fall, the 6-foot-6 Fleming will focus on helping Bangor pursue a deep playoff push in Class AA North. A Bangor Daily News All-Maine first-team selection after averaging 25.3 points and 13.2 rebounds per game last winter, Fleming is fully recovered from a dislocated right elbow suffered in April and is poised to test opponents with his long-range shooting game and two-way play nearer the basket.
Damien Vance
SENIOR, F, Bangor
Vance was a productive No. 2 scorer behind Fleming last winter and may be even more explosive this winter as the transfer of Isaac Cummings -- the leading assist-maker in Class A North last winter at 6.56 per game -- from Brewer to Bangor should enable him to relinquish some of his previous point-guard duties.
Gabe Allaire
SENIOR, F, Medomak Valley
After averaging 12 points per game while helping the Panthers reach the 2018 Class A North championship game, the first-team All-KVAC Class A choice and all-tourney selection will team with 6-5 senior Alec Coughlin to provide Medomak Valley with a top complementary frontcourt tandem.
Kory Winch
SENIOR, G. Hampden Academy
This jack-of-all trades will team with junior Bryce Lausier to form one of the region’s top backcourts for the defending Class A North champs. Winch’s versatility is reflected in his regularseason statistics from a year ago (11.6 points, 6.7 rebounds per game with 24 3-pointers and 55.6 percent field-goal shooting) while earning All-KVAC Class A honors.
Derek Colline
SENIOR, F, Mount Desert Island
Isaac Varney
JUNIOR, F, Hermon
MDI has been a virtual given on the Class B North tournament scene in recent years and little should change this season. Collin returns after a junior season when he averaged a team-best 13.4 points per game en route to earning second-team All-Big East Conference status.
Varney has been the near-perfect example of a player who does whatever his team needs him to do to win during his first two years with the Hawks. That unselfish role was not lost on rival Big East Conference coaches who named him a first-team league all-star last winter as he helped the Hawks capture the Class B state championship. Varney (11.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg) should be an even bigger scoring threat this winter in tandem with seniors Cody Hawes and Garrett Trask.
Cooper Wirkala
SENIOR, G-F, Oceanside
The 6-6 Wirkala should be the number one option in his final season for a Oceanside program that figures to be among the top contenders in Class B North. A first-team All-KVAC Class B selection last winter, he blends the size to be a defensive presence near the basket with the shooting range and ball handling skills to be a tough perimeter matchup.
Alex Brown
BY ERNIE CLARK | BDN
SENIOR, G, Mattanawcook Academy
Brown hopes to follow a strong junior year when he was named to the All-Penobscot Valley Conference first team by helping MA contend for the Class C North crown. He averaged 12 points, 8.4 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 3.7 steals last winter as the Lynx reached the regional semifinals during their first tourney appearance in six years.
Caleb Delisle
SENIOR, F, Fort Kent
At 6-4, Delisle may spend more time closer to the basket this winter as he becomes the top frontcourt threat for a Fort Kent team that should challenge for the Class C North title. Delisle averaged 14 points, six rebounds and four assists per game last season, and Warriors’ coach Derrick Cooper cites basketball IQ and work ethic as key factors in his on-court performance.
Drew Hayward
SENIOR, G, Woodland
Hayward helped the Dragons capture the 2018 Class D North title and come within a single point of winning the state crown before dropping a 47-46 decision to Greenville in the gold-ball game. Hayward is comfortable as either a quarterback or scoring threat from the pointguard position for coach Ben Maloney’s club, averaging 14.7 points per game while earning Class D North all-tourney honors last February.
