BANGOR BOYS SQUAD BEGINS TITLE DEFENSE WITH NEW LINEUP FEATURING KEY ADDITIONS BY ERNIE CLARK, BDN STAFF

The Bangor High School boys basketball team had a decidedly different look when preseason practices began in late November. The state’s reigning Mr. Basketball, Matthew Fleming, now plays on the prep team at Army West Point. Fellow 2018-2019 starters Damien Vance, Noah Missbrenner and Isaac Cummings also are among nine graduated seniors who have moved on after helping first-year head coach Brad Libby and the Rams capture the Class AA state championship last March. But all is not lost. The returning Rams, buoyed by two key transfers and several promising youngsters, are savoring the challenge of pursuing their own championship challenge. “We got a lot of leadership on last year’s team from those seniors who stepped up,” Bangor senior forward Henry Westrich, the team’s lone returning starter, said. “We had nine seniors and now we’ll have around four, so it will be a change in depth and a change in character, and the older guys we have will have to step up and fill that leadership gap.” While the roster will look different, the hopeful outlook gleaned by players throughout the program from seeing what is possible remains, as evidenced by a large influx of freshmen and sophomores into the program. “Our main goal, as it was last year, is to step on the floor every night whether it’s a game, practice or film [session], and to get better every single day,” Libby said. “If we put 100 percent effort in, 100 percent heart in, care about what we’re doing and care about each other, then we’re going be where we want to be at the end of the year and we’re going to be a really tough team.” The transition process involving Libby’s new cast begins with the constant. Westrich, a 6-4 forward, will be asked to expand his presence from a spot-up shooter and defender to a more diversified offensive threat and a significant team leader.

“Henry’s the type of kid you always want to have around,” Libby said. “Fundamentally, I’m not sure if I’ve seen a more sound guy, and he’s always in the gym working on the small things. “His game needs to be more dynamic this year but he’s worked really hard on it.” Westrich was the Rams’ tallest starter when the offseason began, but now he’s the shortest member of a small college-sized frontcourt with the transfer additions of 6-8 senior Sam Martin of Milford and Orono High School and 6-5 junior Andrew Szwez of Penobscot and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill. Szwez already sports a state championship pedigree as a reserve on GSA’s 2018 Class C title team, and he looms as a budding source of offense for Bangor. “The biggest step will be physicality, just being more physical down in the paint and not getting as many calls as I might get in Class C,” Szwez said. “I think I’m ready for it and I’ve been working a lot this offseason to be prepared for it.” Martin is expected to provide rim protection, interior defense and rebounding strength for the Rams. “Obviously we have some great scorers in Henry and Szwez,” Martin said, “but I feel like I can be a great role player, come in, rebound and get a bucket when I need to.” Libby has seen the transfers make a smooth transition to Bangor’s basketball philosophy. “We’re excited they’re here,” he said. “They bring a couple more scorers to our table, and obviously Sam brings some size that we were lacking along with Andrew.” Other top returnees include senior guards Parker Noyes and Quinn Richards along with sophomores Max Clark and Joey Morrison. “With us being a state championship team last year, that meant those bench players were competing against the top team in Class AA [in practice],” Westrich said. “I think it clicked during the offseason that we did just that and now we can move up and compete in that same role.”

Libby anticipates a few hiccups as the acclimation process moves from practices to games, but he also sees considerable promise in his roster of quick learners. “One thing that’s going to be really special about this group is that as we continue to build you’re really going to see progression throughout the season,” he said. “We’re not going to plateau early. “By the end of the season we’re going to be a really tough team on both ends of the floor and then once you get to tournament time anything can happen.” Bangor and its Class AA North brethren will experience a slight change in their regular-season schedules. Instead of the recent practice of playing some crossover games from the opposite Class AA region, teams in both the North and South now will play every other school in their own region twice during the regular season. That leaves only four contests against either Class AA crossover opponents or geographic rivals from Class A. Bangor has two games each against Brewer and Hampden Academy. “That’s who we compete with in the postseason, the AA North teams,” Libby said. “It means a lot for the regular season that we play them all twice so those rankings at the end of the year mean that much more as you’re trying to get into that top four so you can play a quarterfinal at home.”

2-TIME DEFENDING ‘D’ STATE CHAMPION UNEXPECTEDLY REBUILDING BY LARRY MAHONEY, BDN STAFF

Even though Southern Aroostook Community School graduated two talented starters and two useful reserves, coach Cliff Urquhart’s team appeared to be poised to make a run for a third straight Class D girls basketball state championship. The Warriors of Dyer Brook have some challenges to overcome. Two of the three anticipated returning starters are no longer on the team. Sydney Brewer, a 1,000-point scorer, has opted not to play her senior year and dominant center Kacy Daggett moved to Rockland. That leaves senior guard Makaelyn Porter as the only returnee among the top seven players on last year’s team. “Deer Isle-Stonington has to be, by far, the best team in Class D,” Urquhart said. “Schenck will be good … and I think Shead will be decent.” Porter, a Bangor Daily News All-Maine Schoolgirl Basketball Team honorable mention, will be one of the best players in Class D. She has earned back-to-back D North Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Promising guard Madison Russell, an eighth-grader last year, received valuable playing time and will step into a more prominent role. Deer Isle-Stonington was undefeated until losing to Southern Aroostook in the D North final. And the Mariners were without their best player, freshman Rylee Eaton,

who was sidelined in the postseason after having a minor surgical procedure. “[Eaton] is healthy now and has done a lot of work in the offseason, a lot of strength training. She’s in the best shape of her life,” Mariners coach Randy Shepard said. The 5-foot-8 guard averaged double figures in points and rebounds. Junior point guard Kaylee Morey was an all-tourney choice and 5-9 senior forward Katie Hutchinson provides a strong inside presence.

Class B

Defending state champ Oxford Hills of South Paris is the team to beat in the North, according to first-year Bangor High School coach Jay Kemble. “They have talent and they know how to play,” Kemble said. “Portland, as far as athleticism is concerned, is as good as anybody. But Oxford Hills has been there and has won it.” Senior All-Maine first-team guard Julia Colby averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4 steals and 3.2 assists last season. She is complemented by fellow guards Cecilia Dieterich and Cassidy Dumont. All-Maine honorable mentions Amanda Kabantu (2019) and Gemima Motema (2018), both juniors, are Portland’s catalysts. Bangor is intriguing with a balance of seasoned veterans including twins Abby Fleming and Libby Fleming, Maggie Cowperthwaite and Rowan Andrews joined by some impressive freshmen. Windham will be a threat thanks to two sisters, Hannah Talon and University of Maine commit Sarah Talon.

Waterville is the favorite after reaching the Class B North final a year ago with only one senior starter. All-Maine third-team choice and all-tourney pick Sadie Garling heads the list of returnees. She is joined by fellow all-tourney choice Kali Thompson, a rebounding machine who grabbed 38 in three tournament games. Maddy Martin is a formidable post presence and the Panthers have quality guards in Paige St. Pierre and Jayda Murray. Hermon graduated All-Maine third-teamer Cait Tracy, but the Hawks return Paige Plissey, the league leader in assists and steals, and productive forward-center Grace Page. They will be bolstered by sophomores Madison Lebel, Megan Tracy and Elizabeth Wyman, who were sidelined by knee injuries last winter. “We’ve got size, length and athleticism,” Hermon coach Chris Cameron said. “And we’ll be eight or nine deep.” Old Town reached the Class B North quarterfinals for the first time since 2014 with a sophomore and three freshmen playing regularly. All-Maine honorable mention Hannah Richards, now a junior, and sophomore Lexi Thibodeau are consistent double-digit scorers. Sophomores Maddy Emerson and Sydney Loring and senior Claudia Damboise are key performers. Defending champ Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor and 2018 state champ Winslow Penobscot Valley of Howland coach Nate Case had been worried about complacency after coming off a regional championship last year. But he said his players are motivated were hit hard by graduation but Winslow returns Bodhi Littlefield and Silver Clukey. AllMaine honorable mention Trinity Montigny is a standout for Ellsworth. and ready to defend the title. “We should do big things this year,” said Case, who welcomes back All-Maine honorable mention and Class C North tournament MVP Lexi Ireland along with starting guards Leine McKechnie and Emily St. Cyr and center Emilee Ireland, Lexi’s younger sister. Guard Laney Harding also has improved significantly. “With our different weapons, we will be very hard to stop,” Case said. He said there is plenty of competition in Class C with Calais and Stearns of Millinocket at the top of the contenders list. Calais features three guards, All-Maine honorable mention Lauren Cook, Olivia Huckins and Sophie McVicar, daughter of Calais coach Bill McVicar. The Blue Devils return all five starters and coach McVicar noted that sophomore forward Sage Phillips and junior forward Nedra Bassett have made significant strides. At Stearns, dynamic sophomore guard Alisyn Alley and older sister Katherine Alley will lead the Minutemen. Alisyn Alley earned an all-tourney spot and was an All-Maine honorable mention. Paige Plissey of Hermon looks to pass inside against defensive resistance from Dexter had two sophomore all-tourney selections a year ago in All-Maine honorable Waterville’s Sadie Garling and Madeleine Martin during a Class B North mention Peyton Grant and Avery Herrick, but Herrick has decided not to play. semifinal in Bangor last season. Class A appears to be wide open as Class A North finalist Skowhegan graduated four starters and defending champ Hampden Academy, which upset previously unbeaten Skowhegan in the final, graduated All-Maine second-team center Bailey Donovan. Broncos coach Nick Winchester believes his team can contend while playing a completely different style. “We’re going to play fast,” said Winchester, who has six of his top eight players back including starting senior guards Alydia Brillant, Amelia McLaughlin and Sydney Hodgdon. Winchester expects Gardiner and Erskine Academy of South China to be in the mix for a regional crown. Mt. Blue of Farmington and Messalonskee of Oakland each have a difference-maker in UMaine commit Lexi Mittelstadt and Gabrielle Wener, respectively. Both were All-Maine honorable mentions. Skowhegan sophomore Jaycie Christopher is another standout.

FOR CLASS B STATE CHAMPION CARIBOU, THE GOLD-BALL QUEST BEGINS ANEW BY ERNIE CLARK, BDN STAFF

The Caribou Vikings provided one of the major storylines of the 2018-2019 schoolboy basketball postseason. They ended Hermon’s 42-game winning streak in the Class B North championship game and then outlasted Cape Elizabeth in double overtime to capture the program’s first state championship in 50 years. Coach Kyle Corrigan’s club may be even better this winter, with four returning starters back led by Bangor Daily News All-Maine forward Parker Deprey, a 6-foot-2 senior. “I think we will be much deeper than we were last season,” Corrigan said. “We stuck with a seven-man rotation for most of the season last year but I can see us having a nineto 10-man rotation this year.” Other returning starters are senior guard Alex Bouchard, senior forward Isaac Marker and junior forward Sawyer Deprey, Parker’s brother. “Last year was an amazing achievement for our program but it’s over,” Corrigan said. “We were able to enjoy it for the last eight months but now we’re moving on. We’re preaching every day that this is a new year. We’re a different squad and we need to take it one game at a time with a focus on getting better every day.”

One of Caribou’s biggest Class B North challengers should be Ellsworth, a semifinalist last season that features the brother tandem of senior forward Jackson Curtis and sophomore guard Hunter Curtis. They combined for nearly 30 points and 16 rebounds per game last winter. Hermon, the 2018 state champion and 42-1 over the last two seasons, graduated four starters but returns one of the region’s top players in senior forward Isaac Varney. Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor has been a constant among the division’s top teams in recent years under coach Justin Norwood, while Washington Academy of East Machias looms as another potential contender from the Big East Conference. Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield went 14-4 and reached the regional semifinals despite losing guard Owen Williams to injury for much of the winter. Now the senior guard is back and with junior swingman Gavin McArthur comprises a talented duo that should help coach Josh Tardy’s Huskies remain a top tournament threat from the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference. Houlton, the reigning Class C North champion, has moved up to Class B by enrollment and should be solid in its new division as led by reigning tournament MVP Keegan Gentle, a senior guard.

Class A Hampden Academy has been a longtime Class A powerhouse under head coach Russ Bartlett, and the bitter taste of a quarterfinal ouster from last winter’s tournament may provide just the additional source of motivation the Broncos need to surge past the likes of Cony of Augusta and Medomak Valley of Waldoboro for a return to state championship competition. Hampden, 14-4 during the 2018-2019 regular season, returns one of the state’s premier players in Bryce Lausier, a versatile 6-3 senior guard who earned BDN All-Maine accolades last winter. “Bryce has put a lot of time into improving his game and his frame,” Bartlett said. “I look for him to have a great senior year.” Senior forward Mikey Raye and junior guard Andy Raye are other prominent returning contributors, while 6-7 sophomore T.J. Henaghen and 6-4 junior Brayden Cole also will be pivotal in Hampden maximizing its potential. Fast-paced Cony, the No. 1 seed last season at 14-4, returns a deep and veteran cast led by one of the state’s most exciting players in senior guard Simon McCormick. Medomak Valley has senior forward Gabe Allaire back to lead the way. The Brewer Witches, who reached the semifinals as the No. 6 seed, boast a promising nucleus that includes senior guard Trevor Pearson, junior forward Dylan Huff and sophomore guards Aaron Newcomb and Colby Smith. One major coaching change in the division has Jon Moro replacing 37-year head Windjammers coach Jeff Hart at Camden Hills of Rockport. Moro, a guard on Hart’s 1999 Camden Hills state championship team, most recently was the freshman basketball coach under Hart, who posted 503 career coaching wins before retiring last spring to become the school’s athletic administrator.

McLaughlin’s Tigers finished ninth a year ago despite a 12-6 record but should return virtually intact after suffering no graduation losses. Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln had a breakthrough 15-3 season under coach Lucas Turner last winter, but must overcome significant graduation losses. George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill boasts plenty of recent tradition but will have to replace talented forward Andrew Szwez, a junior who transferred to Bangor.

Class C Houlton’s move to Class B has left a vacuum atop the Class C North rankings, and among the teams that may be poised to ascend to those reaches are the Dexter Tigers. Longtime coach Peter Murray has an experienced, defensive-minded crew back including seniors Nathan Richards, Logan Perkins and 6-4 Cameron Paige and junior Brett Kusnierz from the team’s 14-4 finish a year ago. Central Aroostook of Mars Hill, top-seeded at the end of the 2019 regular season only to be upset in the quarterfinals on a last-second shot, returns senior forwards Brayden Bradbury and Ethan Pryor, and should be buoyed by the school’s recent run to the Class D state championship in boys soccer. Another team to watch from the northern reaches is Fort Fairfield. Coach Vaughan

Defending Class D North champion Schenck features a talented on-court leader in junior swingman Tyrone Davis but this may be the year when the legend of JonesportBeals returns to the top. Coach Skipper Alley’s Royals have reached the regional final each of the last two years and may be poised to break through with talented forwards Kaiden Crowley and Ryan Alley now seniors and junior guard Alvin Beal Jr. back after joining Crowley as an alltournament choice last winter. Greater Houlton Christian Academy graduated only two seniors off last year’s semifinal team, while 2018 Class D North champion Woodland returns a top guard in senior Chris Plissey. Easton, Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook and Deer Isle-Stonington are among other teams with a large group of returning players ready to challenge for postseason contention.

Ryan Alley of Jonesport-Beals goes to the basket against Schenck’s Travis Thompson during the Class D North final in Bangor last season. Alley and the Royals will be attempting to return to Bangor this season.

10 GIRLS TO WATCH

THIS 2019-2020 SEASON

BY LARRY MAHONEY, BDN STAFF

ALISYN ALLEY SOPH., F, STEARNS

The fourth of the four standout Alley sisters led No. 9 Stearns past top seed Central Aroostook of Mars Hill in their Class C quarterfinal to earn all-tourney honors. “She’s phenomenal,” Stearns coach Nick Cullen said of the Bangor Daily News All-Maine honorable mention. “She is amazing to watch. She has the best floor vision I’ve ever seen. She’s our best rebounder and passer.”

JULIA COLBY SR., G, OXFORD HILLS The All-Maine first-team pick had a remarkable junior season, leading the Vikings to the Class AA state championship. Oxford Hills coach Nate Pelletier called Colby, who is headed to the New York Institute of Technology, the best ball-handler he has ever coached and a natural point guard. Colby averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4 steals and 3.2 assists.

LAUREN COOK SR., G, CALAIS Cook is a scoring machine who averaged 22.5 points in two Class C North tourney games a year ago. She earned all-tourney honors for the second straight year. She is quick and can score from anywhere which makes her very difficult to guard.

EMILY CURTIS JR., C, WOODLAND

PEYTON GRANT JR., G, DEXTER

The versatile guard is an outstanding shooter with a long list of 20point games. She can hit the 3, a midrange jumper or take the ball to the rim. She is a good ballhander with a high basketball IQ. Grant is a smart defender with good instincts. She is a two-time Class C North all-tourney pick and an All-Maine honorable mention.

LEXI IRELAND SR., G-F, PVHS

A relentless worker, the 5-9 Ireland can play point guard or center. She led the Howlers to their first regional championship since 1986 and earned Class C North tournament MVP honors and was an AllMaine honorable mention. “She has the heart of a champion. She is a competitor. She is a winner,” PVHS coach Nate Case said.

LEXI MITTELSTADT SR., G, MT. BLUE

The two-time All-Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference first-team selection led the league in scoring (19.5 ppg) and assists (3.7) last season. The UMaine-bound Mittelstadt, an All-Maine honorable mention, can create shots for herself and likes to attack the rim. Messalonskee coach Keith Derosby called her an elite player and “one of the most versatile scorers in the KVAC.”

TRINITY MONTIGNY SR., G, ELLSWORTH

The 5-foot-11 center established herself as one of the region’s best post players. She led the Dragons to a 59-33 Class D North victory over Katahdin in the quarterfinals with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, then posted 30 points and 19 rebounds in a semifinal loss to undefeated Deer Isle-Stonington. She was an all-tourney selection and an All-Maine honorable mention.

Montigny led the Big East Conference in scoring last season (16.6 ppg) thanks to 38.4 percent 3-point shooting. She is also a good passer with impressive court vision who averaged 2.6 assists per game. Defense is also in her arsenal as she averaged 2.9 steals per game en route to All-Maine honorable mention.

SADIE GARLING SR., F, WATERVILLE

MAKAELYN PORTER SR., G-F, SO. AROOST.

Garling paced the Panthers to a berth in the Class B North championship game. The All-Maine honorable mention and alltourney selection (16.5 ppg, 4 rpg, 2.5 apg) was the KVAC Class B North Player of Year. The 3-point specialist is an excellent defender who forces a lot of turnovers in their full-court press.

Porter has led the Warriors to two straight Class D state titles. The two-time North tourney MVP averaged 14.5 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds. “Her basketball IQ is phenomenal,” Southern Aroostook coach Cliff Urquhart said. “She’s a good shooter, a good ball-handler and she can find the open player.”

10 BOYS TO WATCH

THIS 2019-2020 SEASON

BY ERNIE CLARK, BDN STAFF

JACKSON CURTIS SR., F, ELLSWORTH

BRYCE LAUSIER SR., G, HAMPDEN ACADEMY

Curtis’ shooting range stretches from the paint to beyond the 3-point arc, skills he put on display during last winter’s Class B North tourney when he averaged 19.0 points during Ellsworth’s trip to the semifinals. He’s now back with younger brother Hunter, a sophomore, as the Eagles seek to challenge defending state champion Caribou.

Lausier is coming off a junior year when he earned Bangor Daily News All-Maine third-team recognition after leading the Broncos to a 14-4 regular-season record with 19.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists a game. Now 6-foot-4, Lausier has continually expanded his game since his freshman year, when he was 5-10.

TYRONE DAVIS JR., G-F, SCHENCK

SIMON MCCORMICK SR., G, CONY

PARKER DEPREY F, CARIBOU LAUREN COOK SR.,SR., G, CALAIS

ANDREW SZWEZ JR., F, BANGOR

Davis emerged during last winter’s Class D North tournament when he scored 33 points in the quarterfinals and averaged a tourney-best 18.7 points for three games to help the Wolverines capture their first regional crown since 2010. His role figures to be even more prominent this winter with 2019 D North tourney MVP Travis Thompson among the graduation losses.

Deprey recently competed in the Class B state championship game in boys soccer with the Vikings after already capturing state titles in tennis and basketball. Deprey earned second-team BDN AllMaine basketball status last winter after averaging 19.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.2 steals while leading the Vikings to their first basketball state championship in a half-century.

The 5-foot-6 McCormick’s speed not only ignites Cony’s fast-paced offense but also triggers the Rams’ defensive pressure. He’s coming off a junior year when he led coach T.J. Maines’ club to the No. 1 seed in Class A North, averaging 15.1 points, 5.1 assists and 5.0 steals while shooting 37 percent from beyond the arc.

Szwez already has a state-title pedigree as a top reserve during his freshman year at 2018 Class C state champion George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill. Now the 6-5 Szwez is one of two impact transfers at reigning Class AA state champion Bangor – along with 6-8 senior Sam Martin – who will try to help returning standout Henry Westrich lead the Rams to another deep postseason run.

KEEGAN GENTLE SR., G, HOULTON

ISAAC VARNEY SR., F, HERMON

Gentle, who led Houlton to the Class C North crown last winter, will endeavor to help coach Tim Brewer’s club contend in Class B this season after the Shiretowners were moved up a class by enrollment. Gentle was the Class C North tournament MVP last year and averaged 16.0 points in four postseason games for 17-5 Houlton.

Varney has played a major role as Hermon has gone 42-1 over the last two seasons with one Class B state title and a return to the North regional final game last winter. The two-time All-Big East firstteamer, who averaged 12.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocked shots last season, is a centerpiece of coach Mark Reed’s roster this year as the Hawks seek another deep tournament run.

DYLAN HUFF JR., F, BREWER

OWEN WILLIAMS SR., G, MAINE CENTRAL INST.

Huff is one of several young players poised to elevate Brewer within the Class A North ranks after the Witches reached the semifinals last year. The second-team Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A North all-star led his team in 3-point goals last winter but also was successful driving to the basket to generate offense.

Williams was leading MCI in scoring and rebounds last winter before his season was cut short by injury. Huskies’ coach Josh Tardy reports that Williams is back “in great shape and hungry” for his senior season and poised to be one of the top players in the KVAC Class B ranks for the Class B North contenders.
