JANET T. MILLS GOVERNOR

My fellow residents, friends and neighbors,

OFFICE OF THE COMMISSIONER 22 STATE HOUSE STATION AUGUSTA, MAINE 04333

AMANDA E. BEAL COMMISSIONER

While you're celebrating autumn in Maine, I hope you will take the opportunity to reflect on Maine's rich agricultural

The brilliant hues of orange, red, and yellow flowing from our state’s northern tip to southern border draw millions of tourists to our state and billions to our economy every year.

heritage, its impact on our beautiful state, and all the ways in which agriculture brings us together. Maine is often called the fall foliage capital of the northeast. Our vast, abundant and accessible forests (Maine is the most forested state in the country) attract millions of leaf peepers. My hope this fall is for everyone to both enjoy the foliage

Foliage is not the only indicator that fall has arrived in Maine. From agricultural fairs and festivals, apple picking, hay mazes and other special events, there are countless ways to celebrate the season in Maine, which begins mid-September and continues at least through Indigenous Peoples Day. Visiting orchards, farms and pumpkin patches is a great way to relish the temperate weather and magnificent colors before the season ends, while also supporting Maine-made products. And don’t forget

and seek out new opportunities to experience the wide array of incredible agricultural products grown in our state. We have a lot to celebrate: Maine is bucking national trends, with increased numbers of producers; we have more women producers than nearly every other state, and we have an increasing number of younger farmers involved in farm management. At the same time, it’s no secret that farming is really hard work, and I encourage you to support Maine’s local farms and

to visit Maine’s local dairies and creameries, as well as Maine’s growing list of wineries, distilleries and

producers. You can do this by attending one of Maine's legendary agricultural fairs, festivals, and other attractions that

highlight agriculture, providing tremendous opportunities for discovering our delicious fall flavors.

As you climb peaks to view painted vistas or drive the Moosehead Lake scenic byway, pluck Maine-grown apples or wander pumpkin fields, I hope that you celebrate this season with your friends, family, neighbors and community.

Use this guide to get inspired -- make plans to attend the Maine Cheese Festival, for instance, and map your foliage trip along byways that include creameries and apple orchards. Wind your way through a corn maze and visit a roadside farm stand. Buy the biggest pumpkin you can find and pick extra bags of apples to bring home and share with your neighbors. Meeting our farmers while you are out on the road and taking the time to learn about their farming heritage and dedication

I look forward to seeing you at an orchard this fall!

to caring for their land will make you fall even more in love with Maine. At the same time, know that purchasing their products makes a big difference for the agricultural community.

Thank you,

Wishing you many great fall experiences!
