WALTER E. WHITCOMB COMMISSIONER
GOVERNOR
Welcome to the Maine Open Farm Day, Sunday, July 22, 2018.
A Message from Governor Paul R. LePage Maine Open Farm Day is an opportunity to experience firsthand how large and small agricultural enterprises continue to grow. Maine’s 8,200 farm operations provide wholesome foods, thousands of jobs and more than $740 million in farm receipts, not including direct sales at farms or farmers’ markets. Open Farm Day is also an opportunity for you to express your thanks and to support local farmers and food producers. This is an exciting time for Maine-made products and Maine agriculture. My Administration, through the efforts of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and other state agencies, is working hard to help our farms reach their full potential. Farmers, producers, processors and distributors have an even greater potential to feed our neighbors, the region and the world. The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry continues to improve its stategenerated marketing, communications and technical assistance efforts to support agricultural enterprises of all sizes. Visit your local agricultural operations on Maine Open Farm Day and talk with the men and women responsible for putting local, quality, sustainable food on your table. You will see both the success of our farms and the hard work that is producing these impressive results. Please join me in celebrating their efforts.
Maine farms participating in 2018 Open Farm Day extend a warm welcome to all visitors, young and older. We encourage you to pick a few farms on this list and learn firsthand the variety and the quality of Maine’s home grown products. A countryside journey on Open Farm Day is both an entertaining and an educational outing. Farm guests will enjoy the view and see how food makes its way from farm to table. Notice the several patterns to Maine farming. The agricultural landscape is an attractive visual pattern: fence lines, tree plantings, long rows of vegetable crops, windrows of hay, animals grazing across a pasture all add an artistic element to a business enterprise. Maine farms live in the pattern of the season: plant, grow, harvest; spring, summer, fall. The midsummer Open Farm Day is at the heart of the very active growing season. The pattern of multigenerational farm family involvement adds a connection to visitors of all age groups. Children of farm families can be very engaging tour guides. There is a lot to see on Open Farm Day. We welcome your visit. Safe travels,
Sincerely,
Walter E. Whitcomb Commissioner
