BE SURE TO CHECK FOR UPDATES OFTEN Everyone is making adjustments this summer to keep their communities and loved ones safe and healthy. As you plan and prepare to Experience Maine this summer, be sure to call ahead or check the websites and social media pages of the following events and organizations often for updates. We carefully researched dates and information, but COVID-19 guidelines are changing frequently to help keep the public safe and information may no longer be accurate. Unfortunately, as many of the regular Maine summer events we know and love take months to organize, many have already made the difficult decision to cancel, postpone or change what the event will look like this year. We’ve included lists of many cancelled and postponed events so you can check their websites for any new updates and keep them in mind for next summer. If you’re able, consider making donations to your favorite organizations and activities that may be

closed, cancelled or facing much smaller crowds than usual this summer. Visit their websites for ways to show your support and keep these organizations up and running so we can continue to enjoy them in the future. Because many of us will be unable to travel as much as we would like and may need to limit our exposure to others this summer, inside you’ll find some additional activities to try virtually and from the comfort of your home. Go online to enjoy tours and online demonstrations from both Maine and around the world. Or cook up a Maine-inspired recipe or build your own outdoor home theater. NO MATTER HOW YOUR PLANS AND ACTIVITIES MAY CHANGE, MAINE IS STILL A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO EXPERIENCE IN THE SUMMERTIME. WE WISH EVERYONE A HEALTHY, HAPPY SUMMER.

STREAMING MUSIC & CONCERTS MORE WAYS TO GET YOUR LIVE MUSIC FIX

PHOTO: ©PRINCEOFLOVE/ADOBE STOCK

BY JOSH DEAKIN

AFTER LONG, HARSH MAINE WINTERS, many residents seek solace in the summertime by attending concerts at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor or one of the many venues in the greater Portland area. This year, however, it’s looking as though concert goers will have to seek alternative methods to indulge in their live music fix. Luckily, fans of live music have alternatives this summer. In the age of streaming, wouldbe concert attendees have the option to stream live performances from their favorite musicians from the safety of their own living rooms. Recently, popular artist Post Malone conducted a unique experience for his fans on YouTube, performing for his fans for over an hour from his own home through a livestream. All of the proceeds from the livestream were donated to COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization. And while this is impressive on its own, this was a special performance. The show was a dedicated tribute to legendary frontrunners of the 90’s grunge sound, Nirvana. The show caught the ear of former Nirvana bassist, Krist Novoselic, who praised the rapper’s covers. In April, a benefit dubbed Jersey 4 Jersey to support the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund was hosted online. The livestream was emceed by Jon Stewart and featured famous New Jersey natives Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Halsey and more. Included in the performances was a tribute performance of the song “Hackensack” by Fountains of Wayne, whose co-founder Adam Schlesinger recently passed away from COVID-19. The benefit can be viewed on YouTube and donations can be made at NJPRG.org. Jam band legends Grateful Dead have been offering weekly archival streams of previously recorded shows. The series, dubbed Shakedown Stream, kicked off on April 10 featuring a July 4, 1989 performance from New York. After the performance there was a live Q&A with Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux and historian Gary Lambert. During the screenings, there’s a donation button for people to contribute to MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. Grateful Dead counterparts Phish are doing something similar entitled Dinner and a Movie. The band is releasing previously recorded live performances as well as some of their own dinner recipes for “phans” to try out while taking in the “tasty” jams. During one of their Dinner and a Movie streams, the band announced their latest studio album, “Sigma Oasis,” and hosted a listening party via YouTube and Facebook Live before later making it available through all digital music retailers. Looking for something a little more interactive? Waterfront Concerts is hosting “collaborative playlists” on Spotify for music fans to contribute to and listen as part of a community. There are four playlists currently going. “WFC Pit Party” is full of country songs for, according to the website, a “virtual good ‘ol Maine Pit Party.” “This One Goes to 11” is dedicated to hard rock and metal fans. “More Cowbell” features a great mix of classic rock. And “Keep It 100” is full of Top 40 pop and contemporary songs you may hear on the radio. There are more bands announcing livestreams and performances every day. The trend will most likely continue until these performers are able to get back out on the road and bring their shows to the stage again. Until that day happens, we have a wide array of live music to choose from. To keep up with what may be happening online, be sure to check Billboard.com frequently for updates on various events. MAINE FLAVOR AND FUN

EMBRACING THE FLAVORS OF SUMMER FROM THE COMFORT OF HOME BY MOLLY MAYO

SUMMER IN MAINE is filled with outdoor barbeques, activities in the sun and time spent with family. Temperatures and spirits both rise in the sunshine-soaked months. This year, experience the best of your home state with a burst of traditional flavors and festival-inspired activities the whole family can enjoy. From blueberries and maple syrup to Moxie and whoopie pies, Maine has no lack of mouth-watering treats to enjoy. Relax around the campfire, cook up some red hot dogs, or spend an afternoon learning how to make the iconic whoopie pie. You simply can’t go wrong combining flavor with fun at home in Maine.

14 / EXPERIENCE MAINE • SUMMER 2020

BLUEBERRY LEMONADE INGREDIENTS ½ cup sugar 1 cup blueberries ¾ cup lemon juice In a saucepan, stir ½ cup sugar and 1 cup water over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Add 1 cup of blueberries and bring mixture to a boil. Turn heat on low and stir occasionally until the blueberries have burst, around 3 minutes. Separate blueberries from the syrup using a sieve or some cheesecloth. Wait for the syrup to cool and then pour into a pitcher. Whisk in ¾ cup lemon juice and 5 cups of water. Chill mixture in the fridge until ready to serve. Pour over ice and frozen blueberries and enjoy!

ADD FUN FLAVOR With blueberry season just around the corner, celebrate your own personalized blueberry festival with a fun-run around the neighborhood, complete with some refreshing blueberry lemonade post-celebration. This flavorful combination is the perfect icy treat for an afternoon in the sun. If you’re feeling extra competitive, try cooking up some of those Maine red hot dogs around the fire and organizing a hot-dog eating contest. Lathered with ketchup, relish, or a combination of both, the competitor earns bragging rights for the whole summer.

GET SWEET One of the simplest, albeit curious, ways to sneak a little Maine into your normal routine is to flavor your morning coffee with maple syrup. Just a splash of pure maple syrup in place of sugar in your java adds a boost of sweet flavor filled with minerals and antioxidants. Believe me, this is one recipe you’ll definitely want to revisit.

POP ON OVER If you’ve ever been to the Jordan Pond House Restaurant in Acadia National Park, the first thing on your mind is probably their mouth-watering popovers. Served light, fluffy, and golden brown, popovers are a delicious snack, breakfast, and after-dinner special treat. Whip up a fresh batch, pull out some butter and strawberry jam, and you’ve got yourself some restaurant-quality food.

GOLDEN-BROWN POPOVERS INGREDIENTS 2 eggs 1 cup milk 1 Tbsp vegetable oil 1 cup flour ½ tsp salt Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease the bottom of a muffin tin with shortening (I prefer coconut oil for a boost of flavor). In a medium bowl, whisk 2 eggs, 1 cup milk, and 1 Tbsp vegetable oil just until combined. Beat in 1 cup flour and ½ tsp salt until mixture is smooth. Pour mixture into muffin tin, filling each cup halfway. Bake about 35 minutes or until desired crispiness is reached.

WHOOPIE! If your family’s got a sweet tooth and a competitive drive, get baking and hold a whoopie pie-making contest! The delicious original flavor is only limited by your imagination. Although you can find virtually any flavor online, popular variations include maple, red velvet, and vanilla with blueberry filling. Whoever wins the contest can opt out of cleaning the rest of the dishes!

OLD FASHIONED WHOOPIE PIES INGREDIENTS 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 5 Tbsp baking cocoa 1 tsp salt 2 eggs (separated — use yolks for the cookies, whites for the filling) ½ cup shortening 1 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup milk FILLING 2 cups confectioners sugar ½ cup of Crisco ¼ tsp vanilla

Sift together 2 cups flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp baking powder, 5 Tbsp baking cocoa, and 1 tsp salt. In a separate bowl, beat 2 egg yolks, ½ cup shortening, and 1 cup sugar. Mix two mixtures together. Add 1 tsp vanilla and 1 cup milk. Let stand 15 minutes before dropping on greased pan. Bake 375 for 10-12 minutes. FILLING: Beat together 2 egg whites, 2 cups confectioners sugar, a pinch of salt, ½ cup of Crisco, and a ¼ tsp vanilla. Spread an even amount in-between two chocolate cookies and you’ve got yourself a wicked good dessert!

TIPS FOR FAMILY CAMPING TRIPS COURTESY OF METRO CREATIVE

FOR NATURE LOVERS, perhaps

nothing is more enjoyable than packing up the camping gear, traveling to a favorite campsite and getting away from it all while sleeping under the stars. Such an experience can be transformative, turning first-time campers into lifelong enthusiasts. The opportunity to turn youngsters into nature enthusiasts who can’t wait to spend time outside may be one reason why so many families go camping. A 2018 report Kampgrounds of America found that 52 percent of campers have children, making camping among the most popular and family-friendly ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Camping with youngsters can help families make lasting memories. Parents who have never before taken their children camping may benefit from employing a few strategies to make the trip as fun as possible.

equipment, including their sleeping bags and tents. Before visiting your nearby camping retailer, explain to kids that tents come in various styles because they’re designed to protect campers from certain elements that may be more common in certain areas than others. Such an explanation can make it easy to explain to youngsters why you’re purchasing certain items, even if those items weren’t kids’ top choices.  PLAN THE FAMILY MENU IN ADVANCE. Plan the menu in advance so you can ensure everyone will continue to eat healthy. But make sure to include a few kid-friendly camping classics, like s’mores, in the meal plan as well.

 PREPARE A CAMPING-FRIENDLY FIRST-AID KIT. Bandages and topical antibiotic creams are part and parcel of any first-aid kit, regardless of where you're going. But the elements pose a different set of challenges that require a more extensive first-aid kit. When designing a first-aid kit for your camping trip, be sure to include all the usual items but also over-the-counter medications that can treat pain, allergies, constipation, and diarrhea. An extra gallon or two of water also makes for a wise addition to campers’ first-aid kits. Family camping trips can instill a lifelong love of the great outdoors in youngsters. A few simple strategies can help parents make such trips safe and memorable.

Contact your local parks department, or the campground where you will be staying, for some additional advice on camping safety.  LET KIDS HELP WHEN CHOOSING CAMPING EQUIPMENT. HIKE THE GREAT OUTDOORS! FEELING COOPED UP? TAKE THE FAMILY ON AN OUTDOOR ADVENTURE AT HIRUNDO WILDLIFE REFUGE IN OLD TOWN STORY & PHOTO BY AISLINN SARNACKI

THE 2,460-ACRE HIRUNDO Wildlife Refuge in Old Town features sections of Pushaw and Dead streams, an archeological site, fields maintained for ground-nesting birds and mixed hardwood and evergreen forest. The property also features a domed bog, maple and juniper swamps, beaver ponds, vernal pools and a 4-acre pond called Lac d’Or — all places where you might spot wildlife. About 7 miles of trails explore the various habitats on the property, including the new 0.3-mile Trail of the Senses, which travels along the edge of Lac D’or, and the 0.2-mile Big Spring Trail, which passes near some vernal pools. The trail network is bisected by Route 43. Educational public presentations, workshops and events are held regularly on the property. The trails are open to the public from dawn until dusk. Access is free. Donations collection boxes can be found near the parking areas. Dogs, hunting, camping and campfires are not permitted. Also, the collection of rocks, flowers or any other natural item is not permitted. For more information visit hirundomaine.org or call 207-394-2171. DIRECTIONS: Take Interstate 95 Exit 197 (Old Town/Hudson), then turn west onto Hudson Road (Route 43) and drive about 4.6 miles. The main gate for Hirundo — Gate 1 — will be on your right, marked with a large red sign. If the gate is open, you can drive down the long driveway to a parking area near Lac D’or and Parker Reed Shelter. This gives you easy access to the northern half of the trail network. If the gate is closed, you can park by the road, but make sure not to block the gate. Across the road from Gate 1 is Gate 6, which is the trailhead for the southern half of the trail network. And another 0.4 mile down Hudson Road, on your right, is Gate 3, which bars the driveway leading to the refuge boat launch and a trail that connects over to the northern half of the trail network.

VIRTUAL ART MUSEUMS MAINERS

ARE

TOUGH.

That’s why we don’t sweat power outages from blizzards and nor’easters. But even the toughest among us will eventually get cabin fever. That’s why, while the world is closed down and we are all asked to stay home to stay safe, it feels natural to want to turn to the internet to be inspired, seek connections, and remember how beautiful the outside world really is. Thanks to the incredible efforts of talented staff members at museums around the world — and in our own neck of the woods — there are lots of marvelous virtual art tours that anyone can take for free while also practicing social distancing and, let’s be honest, hanging out in pajamas. Virtually swing by these other museums in Maine and around the world where people of all ages can see everything from a famous haunted house to dinosaur bones that are as old as time.

Right now, you can explore the long lost moat and then get lost in the impressively gorgeous halls and rooms where the Mona Lisa, Egyptian Antiquities, and art from every era call home.
