Secrets to
HOLIDAY BAKING
SUC CESS TIPS FOR COOKING UP SUCCESSFUL HOLIDAY BAKING.
Baking
COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
is popular come the holiday season, when baked goods are often gifted or shared with family and friends at holiday gatherings. Individuals turn out sweet treats left and right, and these treats are often gobbled up by appreciative holiday revelers. Although some people have mastered baked goods, others can benefit from a few tricks of the trade. Utilize these tips to make holiday baking that much easier. • OVERWORKED COOKIE DOUGH MAY RESULT IN DRY COOKIES. Try not to handle dough more than is necessary to roll it out to desired thickness. When rolling the dough, put it between two pieces of waxed paper to reduce flour usage on the rolling pin. • When baking brownies or other bar-type cookies, LINE THE INSIDE OF THE PAN WITH GREASED ALUMINUM FOIL. This way you can lift out the dessert and cut it neatly instead of risking sticking.
• DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR OVEN TEMPERATURE with a reliable thermometer to make sure it is accurate. This will help you bake more efficiently and adjust the time or temperature accordingly. • MANY COOKIE DOUGHS CAN BE REFRIGERATED OR EVEN FROZEN, so you can make a big batch and then spread out your baking as needed throughout the season.

• The same technique can be used when baking cookies. LINE COOKIE SHEETS WITH PARCHMENT PAPER and bake as directed. The cookies should slide right off when done, and you won’t have messy pans to wash afterward.
Cranberry Honey BAKED BRIE STORY & PHOTOS BY SARAH WALKER CARON
Sweet,
tart, creamy and lovely … this recipe for Cranberry Honey Baked Brie is a delight to share at holiday parties. Warm, melty brie combines with warm cranberry sauce and sweet honey for a decadent appetizer that feels fancy. But really, it’s pretty simple. Just three ingredients that together to make something creamy, sweet and tart, perfect for enjoying with fresh apple slices, bread or whatever you want. Serve it with a knife to help folks get that cheesy goodness. It won’t take long to make. You can use homemade cranberry sauce, or store bought. And whatever honey you keep on hand. And enjoy. Wishing you the happiest of holidays, whatever holiday you celebrate.
CRANBERRY HONEY BAKED BRIE AUTHOR: SARAH WALKER CARON SERVES: 8-10 INGREDIENTS 8 oz wheel Brie cheese ½ cup whole berry cranberry sauce 1-2 tbsp honey FOR SERVING: Bread, crostini, crackers, sliced apples or a combination thereof INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the Brie on it. Top with cranberry sauce. Bake for 7-10 minutes until the Brie is soft. Transfer Brie to a serving plate. Drizzle with honey. Serve with your choice of dippers — like bread, crostini, crackers or sliced apples.

Chocolate Pistachio BISCOTTI BY SARAH WALKER CARON
years, I have been making a variety of Christmas treats to gift to our near and dear friends and family. And one of my very favorites to gift is biscotti. These little cookies are perfect served with a piping hot cup of coffee. This is the kind of food gift you give to the friend you love lingering over conversation with — because it’s perfect for that. Making biscotti is a process. You start with the dough. This isn’t as simple as tossing ingredients together though. It needs to be kneaded together with care — this will take a few minutes, and you must be patient. Keep working with it until it forms a cohesive ball. Then you roll it into a log and pat it down. Next comes the first bake (yes, biscotti has to bake twice). The first time you bake it, it cooks the ingredients so they meld together into a loaf. But it doesn’t become biscotti until you slice it into strips and re-bake it. Then it crisps into that delightful cookie that’s perfect to serve with coffee (be sure to dip it!). Dotted with chocolate chips and bits of green pistachios, it’s a treat. Package some biscotti in festive bags or boxes to give this holiday season.
CHOCOLATE PISTACHIO BISCOTTI AUTHOR: SARAH WALKER CARON RECIPE TYPE: Dessert SERVES: 24 pieces INGREDIENTS 2 cups all-purpose flour ½ cup sugar 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt ½ cup mini chocolate chips ½ cup pistachio meats, chopped 3 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt until well combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and pistachios. In a small bowl, beat together the eggs and vanilla extract. Pour into the dry mixture and stir until

combined. The mixture will be crumbly but should be moistened. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead well for 2-3 minutes, until the dough comes together in a cohesive ball. Shape the dough into a 12-inch log and transfer to a parchment paperlined baking sheet. Flatten the dough to 1-inch-thick. Slide the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool for 10 minutes. Reduce the oven to 325 degrees. Slice the biscotti into ½-inch thick pieces on the diagonal. Place on the baking sheet and bake for 7-8 minutes per side, flipping once. Transfer the biscotti pieces to a cooling rack and cool completely. Store in an airtight container and enjoy within a week.

9 Ideas for Easy CROSTINI APPETIZERS BY SARAH WALKER CARON
Need
something quick for your holiday festivities? Why not make some easy crostini. With so many options for topping them, crostini can be a tasty offering for any gathering. But, first, what is it? Crostini sounds impressive but really it’s a fancy word for something that’s just somewhere between toast and a crouton. If you like bread (and crackers), this is for you. And ultimately, crostini is a vessel for delicious toppings. It can be fancier like the Sage Ricotta Crostini with Sugared Cranberries I shared a few weeks back, or it can be simple like the ideas below. Ready to make some? This is a simple process of brushing slices of bread with oil, seasoning and baking.

6 GREAT GIFTS FOR
Home Cooks
GIFTS FOR PEOPLE WITH A PASSION FOR COOKING. COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
Many
people enjoy preparing homecooked meals for their loved ones. Whether it's a large family gathering during the holiday season or a weeknight meal, men, women and even children who like to cook enjoy the satisfied looks on their loved ones' faces after sharing a delicious meal. Come the holiday season, gift givers can put the same satisfied look on the faces of the home cooks in their lives by offering a variety of gifts that can make mealtime easier and/or more enjoyable.
2. COOKBOOK: People who understand the joy of cooking often love to experiment in the kitchen. Cookbooks can be an ideal gift for such cooks. Choose a book that provides recipes from their favorite styles of cuisine, such as Italian or Indian food. Or find a book that offers an array of recipes that allows them to explore various types of cuisine. 3. COOKWARE: Even the best cookware can only take so much usage, and chances are home cooks' pantries can afford an upgrade or two. Gift givers should keep in mind that many home cooks have strong preferences regarding their cookware, so it might be wise to give 10 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News

1. ELECTRIC CORKSCREW: Nothing complements a good meal quite like an appropriately paired bottle of wine. Cooks who are too busy in the kitchen to utilize traditional corkscrews, which can be time-consuming and messy, might enjoy an electric corkscrew. Such corkscrews quickly remove corks from wine bottles, requiring little effort on the part of already busy cooks.

Of course, a covert inspection of a loved one's pantry might provide the insight gift givers need as well. 4. ROLLING PIN: For the person who loves to bake, a rolling pin might make a better gift than noncooks may appreciate. Rolling pins are necessary to prepare many baked goods, and a customizable rolling pin can flatten dough to the exact millimeter, helping bakehappy home cooks prepare the perfect plate of cookies. 5. COOKING CLASS: Cooking classes can make the ideal gift for novice home cooks who are just beginning to explore their love of cooking. But advanced classes can help more seasoned cooks perfect their craft as they learn to prepare more complex dishes. 6. WINE AERATOR: Much like electric corkscrews can make opening bottles of wine much easier, wine aerators can help aerate red wine more quickly than decanters, which can take up to two hours to fully aerate wine. Aerators oxidate red wine, softening its flavors and bringing out the aromas that can make a great bottle of wine that much more enjoyable. Home cooks often enjoy preparing fresh meals for their loved ones. The holiday season presents a perfect opportunity to find gifts that make cooking that much more enjoyable for loved ones who can't wait to whip up the next homecooked meal for family and friends.

Road Map to Simplify HOLI DAY HOST I N G TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF HOSTING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.
Hosting
COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
family and friends for the holidays is a tall task. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, during the Christmas/New Year holiday period, the number of long-distance trips (to and from a destination 50 miles or more away) increases by 23 percent compared to the rest of the year. While many of those traveling will stay in hotels, many more will enjoy the hospitality of loved ones. Holiday hosting can make an already hectic time of year that much busier, as hosts must prepare their homes for guests in the midst of holiday shopping excursions, office Christmas parties and social engagements around the neighborhood and at kids' schools. Holiday hosting does not have to run hosts ragged in the days leading up to guests' arrival. The following are a handful of ways to simplify holiday hosting. PLAN MENUS WELL IN ADVANCE OF GUESTS' ARRIVAL. One of the more timeconsuming tasks associated with holiday hosting is cooking. Hosts who plan their holiday menus in advance can get started on prep work several weeks before guests arrive. Choose dishes that can be prepared in advance and then frozen, so dishes need only be defrosted and cooked once guests arrive.
PLAN A NIGHT OUT. Another way to make hosting friends and family for the holidays less taxing is to plan a night out for everyone. In lieu of cooking at home, dine out at an affordable, family-friendly restaurant before taking everyone to a local holiday light display or event. This gets everyone out of the house and allows hosts to showcase their hometown pride.

ROTATE HOSTING DUTIES. The holiday season is full of traditions, and some hosts may feel beholden to tradition and offer to host each year. But family traditions are about getting together, not about getting together in a particular place each year. Families who rotate hosting duties each year can ensure one member of the family does not feel overwhelmed time and time again.

GIFTS THAT
Pamper & Rejuvenate COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
Stress
can be bad for the body, contributing to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and even obesity. Unfortunately, 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association.
Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation.
• AROMATHERAPY. Studies have shown that aromatherapy, or breathing in certain scents, can trigger reactions in the brain and affect emotions, mood and memory. Specific essential oils can help relieve stress, induce relaxation and even promote better sleep. Scents such as lavender, lemon or yuzu, bergamot, ylang ylang, and jasmine can promote relaxation in many people. • CANDLES. The combination of subtle, low flickering light and relaxing aromas can make candles soothing gifts. Put together an entire gift package with decorative candle holders or a nice tray on which candles of various heights can be placed. • PLUSH ROBE. Sometimes lounging around the house is all that's necessary to create a soothing atmosphere. A plush robe that is luxurious and comfortable will help that someone special unwind after a long day or after sleeping in on the weekend. 14 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News

Festive Tree-trimming TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
People
have visited forests to select their Christmas trees for centuries. While tree sellers conveniently stationed in store parking lots and artificial trees displayed in various retailers have led fewer people to venture into the wilderness, the Christmas tree is still an important component of holiday celebrations. Long before the spread of Christianity, evergreen plants and trees held special meaning for people during the winter. Boughs and garlands were hung in homes and over doors and windows to repel evil spirits and illnesses. On the winter solstice, the greenery would represent that spring would once again arrive and banish winter's dreariness. Germans who decorated trees inside of their homes are credited with starting Christian Christmas tree traditions during the 16th century. Early Americans were late to adopt Christmas trees because early Puritan settlers thought the tradition — as well as carols and other concepts — were Pagan influences. It took the popularity of England's Queen Victoria and her German Prince Albert appearing around a decorated Christmas tree to eventually win over much of Europe, Canada and the United States. Trees are very popular today. According to StatisticsBrain, 10 million artificial trees are sold in the United States each year, while 34.5 million real tress are sold annually. Such trees require decorating, and the following secrets and tips can help celebrants do just that. PRUNE THE TREE FIRST. Be sure to shape the tree as desired, since natural trees will have branches sticking out. Wear gardening gloves to avoid being covered in sap. SAFETY FIRST. Position trees away from heat sources, such as fireplaces, vents or radiators, which can cause the tree to dry out prematurely and become a fire risk. For added safety, anchor a tree to a wall or ceiling, so it will not tumble over onto children or curious pets. Hang the most delicate pieces toward the top where they won't be disturbed. GO NATURAL. In homage of the first German Christmas trees, decorate with natural ingredients, such as berries and pinecones. Also, use apples, nuts and marzipan candies. FREE SPACE. To free up more space for presents, place a narrow tree stand inside of a waterproof planting container. Place the tree inside. This will provide a more streamlined look that's neater than a tree skirt. Tree trimming is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the holiday season, and there are no rules other than safety guidelines when it comes to decorating.

THE HISTORY OF
Christmas Stockings FROM WITCHES TO CLOGS, THE STORY BEHIND STOCKINGS.
Just
COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
when the excitement of opening presents abates after the last of the packages under the Christmas tree have been torn open, children and adults alike may discover that there are more treats to be had nestled inside of stockings hung on the mantle. The hanging of Christmas stockings is a tradition with an extensive history. Several legends attribute the hanging of stockings to different people or events. Here is a look at some of the stories that have made Christmas stockings so popular. ST. NICHOLAS DAY Rather than hanging stockings on Christmas, many countries celebrate Saint Nicholas Day on December 6, and this is when stockings are proudly left out for treats. The small, inexpensive trinkets are later unwrapped and enjoyed on Christmas Day. MERCHANT'S FAMILY STORY A popular tale tells the story of a merchant, his wife and three daughters. After the wife falls ill and dies, the man becomes devastated and squanders all of his wealth on frivolous things to mask his sadness. When it comes time for the daughters to marry, the man does not have money for a dowry. St. Nicholas hears of the plight and
knows the man would be too proud to accept charity. Therefore, St. Nicholas anonymously tosses three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The man's daughters had done the laundry prior and left their stockings hanging by the fireplace to dry. The gold landed in the stockings, thus starting the Christmas stocking tradition. DUTCH HERITAGE One tradition says that, in 16th century Holland, children kept their clogs filled with straw in front of the hearth for Santa's reindeer to find. They also left treats for Santa Claus. In return, Santa would leave gifts in the clogs. Over time, stockings were swapped out for clogs.
18 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News
ITALIAN GOOD WITCH One stocking story does not attribute the tradition to Santa, but to a kindhearted Italian witch named “La Befana.” La Befana arrives on a broomstick the night of January 5 and fills the stockings of good children with sweet treats and toys. Bad children are awarded lumps of coal. La Befana is also credited with being the old woman who the wise men ask for directions to Christ's manger in the Christ child's story. After turning down an offer to accompany them, La Befana later carried gifts in search of Christ.

St. Germain—also the owner of Bar Harbor staple Jack Russell's Steak House—takes an exhaustive approach to chronicling nearly every trail in the park, often dropping bits of trail lore in the process. WHAT MAINE-MADE GIFT DO YOU LOVE TO GIVE? Lip balms from Long Winter Farm in Damariscotta. WHY IT'S SPECIAL: These small-batch products are crafted with natural ingredients, care and often a sense of humor and even political engagement. Also, they smell great. WHO IT'S PERFECT FOR: Anyone! I like giving these as stocking stuffers because they are a little off the beaten track and are likely to make someone smile, especially if you go for one of the more unusual varieties such as Pony Breath, Coffee Brandy, Flapjacks or Spoiler Alert. Winter is the season of chapped lips, but you can get through it with flair with the help of fun lip balms. COST: Lip balm is $5. Though the company is Massachusetts-based, they produce platters, cheeseboards, coasters and more with slate from farms around the northeast. All are marked with the farm they came from. I love how this gives new life to something that was essential to agrarian life here in Maine. I bought one made of slate from a Maine farm for serving cheeses and love it so much. WHO IT'S PERFECT FOR: Food lovers, farm fans, anyone who wants to own a little piece of history. COST: Prices vary, but typically $40-$100. 4. "Bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale. Amen."

The gift of
EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE GIFTS ARE OUT-OF-THE-BOX EXCITING.
holidays are a season for decorating, entertaining and, of course, figuring out what to get all of the special people on gift lists. Instead of navigating crowded stores to find a gift that may just take up space in their loved ones' closets, more and more people are giving the gift of an experience. According to Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a professor of psychology at Cornell University, new belongings will only be exciting at first, but then people adapt to them. If shoppers' goals are to prolong those feelings of excitement, then personal experiences can be more effective than material goods. When shopping for those who seemingly have everything, a gift of an experience may be a smarter choice, especially if the experience is something the recipient may never have done before or wouldn't think to get for him or herself. For those who need a little inspiration, the following are some ways to treat loved ones to special experiences.
WINE TASTING: Find a local winery that offers tours and other wine-tasting experiences. Many areas of the country not particularly known as meccas for wine are still homes to local wineries. Treat a loved one to a day at a nearby winery or vineyard, bringing along some snacks, such as bread and cheese, to pair with the wines. FITNESS CLASS PARTY: Enable fitness enthusiasts to try out new and trendy exercise classes by giving the gift of a class or membership. Consider tagging along to a class so the recipient doesn't have to go it alone. HEAD IN THE CLOUDS: Book a trip aboard a sight-seeing plane, balloon or helicopter for the high-flying thrill-seeker on your holiday shopping list. Contact a nearby airport or sightseeing company to find out what is available. Some tours circle national monuments and points of interests, providing more bang for the buck. ACTION AND ADVENTURE: There's adventure to be had on land as well. Racing fans can sit behind the wheel of a race car and lap the racetrack like their favorite NASCARÂŽ stars. Those who prefer getting a little wet with their wild may enjoy a whitewater rafting excursion. THE CHOICE IS THEIRS: If you're stuck on what to get, let recipients choose their own experience. Companies like Cloud 9 Living enable individuals to choose their experiences from a wide variety of options.

HOLIDAY GIFT
Guide
That's a WRAP
BROWN PAPER PACKAGES TIED UP WITH STRING... AND OUR OTHER FAVORITE WRAPPING IDEAS. COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
After
all the holiday presents have been purchased, the task of wrapping can begin. Although some people find wrapping is relaxing and provides a chance to embrace one's artistic flair, many others find wrapping gift after gift becomes tedious quite fast. While there are no statistics on just how many gifts the average person purchases over the course of the holiday season, the National Retail Federation says the average consumer will spend around $800 on all things holiday. That means there will be a lot of gifts to wrap before the big exchange. Those who want to make gift-wrapping less tedious this holiday season can consider these ideas to streamline the process.
GATHER ALL SUPPLIES When the time comes to wrap gifts, there's nothing more frustrating than hunting for wrapping supplies. Have paper, bows, bags, tissue, pens, tape (double-sided tape streamlines the process), scissors, ribbon, and any other wrapping accoutrements at the ready. Set up a folding snack table near your wrapping area to hold the supplies so they don't get in the way. SQUARE IT UP If you are a master at wrapping rectangular or square gifts but fail when presents are oddly shaped, place misshapen gifts into boxes and then wrap the boxes. Gift bags also can be used for such gifts, but wrapped boxes may look more appealing under the tree. FABRIC OVER PAPER If you think gift wrap is wasteful, think about repurposing fabric into beautiful wrapping for presents. A square of leftover fabric, a piece of a t-shirt or even a portion of a sweater that has seen better days can be transformed into an innovative package for gift-giving. Tie the gathered ends into a bow and skip the tape as well. Dress up with ribbon and a tag for extra flair. Fabric bends and moves, making it more forgiving for oddly shaped gifts as well. STOCK UP ON PAPER SHOPPING BAGS On your next trip to the grocery store, bring home more than organic produce. Walk away with paper bags and free gift wrap. Craft a DIY stamp roller or handmade stamps to dress up plain brown bags. Or wrap the gift in twine and add a sprig of evergreen for a rustic look. Children can even use markers or crayons to create their own designs on gifts, personalizing even further. IDENTIFYING GIFTS Identify each recipient's gifts by wrapping in a different color or style. Just jot down the key to decoding the wrapping, and you'll save time on individual gift tags. 32 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News

Shopping
is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to reconnect and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not always ecofriendly or timely, as gifts bought online must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that lastminute shoppers may not have. The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefit your community and the people who call it home.
34 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News
LOCAL ECONOMY When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their local communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbors, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbor instead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbors, so shopping local can strengthen the local economy by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your community fail to support local small businesses.
COMMUNITY IDENTITY Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighborhood identity, and that identity can create a stronger sense of community among you and your neighbors. In addition, a unique community identity can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of local real estate while also attracting more people to local businesses in your neighborhood. UNIQUENESS OF GIFTS The gifts you buy when shopping locally also can benefit your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell more homemade items than their national competitors. Recipients of such items may find such gifts more thoughtful than mass produced items bought from national chains, and the uniqueness of homemade gifts may encourage the gifts' recipients to visit your community and do some shopping, further benefitting your local economy. CUSTOMER SERVICE When buying from national chains, especially during the holiday season when such businesses may be overwhelmed with orders, making contact with customer service departments can be a trying exercise in patience. But such frustration is rare when buying from local businesses, as consumers can simply take their products into the store and immediately address their concerns. bangormetro.com / bangordailynews.com • 35

Hard to BUY FOR IDEAS FOR THE IMPOSSIBLE PERSON (OR PEOPLE) ON YOUR LIST.
Whether
COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
it's your mother-in-law, brother, neighbor or friend, there's always someone (or two or three) on your list who makes gift giving impossible. Here are a few unique gift ideas to help make gift buying a little easier this holiday season.
That's the Ticket! CONCERT TICKETS: The ultimate gift for many music fans is tickets to see their favorite performer in person. Concert tickets can sell out quickly, so research when tickets will be going on sale and be prepared to purchase them as early as possible. Some credit card companies sponsor concerts and make special arrangements with venues to offer cardholders advanced deals or special packages. Find out if your credit card company has such an offer available for the concert you are buying tickets for. THEATER TICKETS: Even if your loved one lives nowhere near the bright lights of Broadway, touring companies that perform popular Broadway shows visit cities both big and small across the country. Tickets to such shows can stoke your loved one's passion for music and make for a great night out on the town.
Fun & Games PARTY GAMES: Board games, physical games (like horseshoes or bean bag tosses), games for video gaming systems, and even karaoke machines are fun for the whole family. NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN: A gift card to a local restaurant and an offer to babysit will be appreciated by most parents. 38 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News
Welcome Home! TOOL GIFT BASKET: Homeowners can always use nails, screws, hammers, picture-hanging kits, painter's tape, and the other odds and ends that go into making repairs. PORTRAIT SESSION: Give the gift of memories by setting up a photo session with a local photographer who enables the family to have a print made that can be hung up and enjoyed. HOW-TO BOOKS: Owning a home presents many opportunities for repairs and renovations. Oftentimes, this is a homeowner's initial foray into do-it-yourself projects, so consider giving a library of instructional books that walk new homeowners through some basics, like plumbing, electrical work or basic construction. WELCOME MAT: Welcome mats can be customized with the owner's last name, and some customizing services also can print an image on a door mat or find one with a fun quirky saying. CLEANING SERVICE: The gift of a cleaning service saves homeowners from having to do the postholiday cleanup.

MUSIC LESSONS: Perhaps your loved one is a budding musician who can benefit from professional instruction? A great way to encourage their aspirations is to finance their lessons with local music or vocal instructors. Visit a nearby college or school for recommendations on local instructors. The franchise "School of Rock" has regional locations and offers musical training as well. MUSIC STORE GIFT CARD: Musicians often need to repair or replace their instruments, so a gift card to a music store can make for a much-needed and appreciated gift.

down to Christmas Day means many different things to people across the globe. Although families likely have several different traditions they anticipate each year, it can be fun to incorporate some new merrymakers into the festivities. Here are some festive ideas to include in the days leading up to Christmas — a special family calendar of fun finds.
2. COOKIE DAY: Devote one day to making Christmas cookies. Invite friends or family members over. Distribute some cookies to elderly neighbors. 3. HOLIDAY CLASSIC: Spend a night in and watch a classic Christmas flick you've never seen before. Streaming movie services often put classics and obscure titles into rotation during the holiday season. 4. CHRISTMAS CONCERT: Host a gathering of children where they can sing or perform their favorite tunes for an audience. Take it on the road to a nearby nursing home. 40 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News

1. ANNUAL MEMENTO: Have the kids or adults make one new handmade ornament each year. This way the tree is always evolving, and everyone can track milestones.
5. DINE OUT: Take a break from cooking, shopping and hosting and stop into a restaurant you've been meaning to try. Keep it local to support nearby businesses. 6. ADOPT A CHILD/FAMILY: Volunteer with a charitable organization that provides for less fortunate families. Answer the Christmas desires of a needy child or family by purchasing an item on their wish lists. 7. SEE THE SIGHTS: Pack the children into the family car to tour nearby areas and look at Christmas lights displays. Bring along cookies and hot chocolate. 8. TRIM A TREE: Get together with adult friends at a treetrimming party. Rotate the hosting house each year. 9. PLAY DRESS-UP: A gentleman can dress up as the man in red and pop into a friend's holiday gathering. 10. WILDERNESS WALK: Enjoy the crisp air and snow and see a local park from a winter perspective. 11. ACTS OF KINDNESS: Choose any act of kindness and make it happen this Christmas. It can include feeding the hungry or helping a disabled person shop for the season. 12. KIDS' SECRET SANTA: Spread the joy of giving by having the kids choose a sibling or friend's name from a hat and purchasing or making a gift for that person. 13. HAND OUT HOT CHOCOLATE: Make a big thermos of hot chocolate and give it out to shoppers or workers who have been out in the cold. 14. READ RELIGIOUS STORIES: Understand the true meaning of the season by reading Biblical passages. 15. CAMP-IN: The first night the tree is decorated, allow the kids to sleep beside it under the glow of Christmas lights. 16. SCAVENGER HUNT: Plan holiday-themed trivia questions and hide small trinkets for children to find. 17. SURPRISE BOX: Put a gender and age nonspecific gift into a box. On Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, the person who finds a hidden gift tag under their chair at dinner gets to open the box. 18. FAMILY PORTRAIT: Wear your holiday finery and pose for a portrait that actually will be printed and framed.

TIPS FOR TIPPING AND BUDGETING FOR HOLIDAY GRATUITIES.
COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
the rate of spending during the holiday is any indication, generosity is in full force come the end of the year. During their second annual holiday debt survey, the financial resource MagnifyMoney found consumers who took on debt during the 2016 holiday season started the New Year an average of $1,003 in the red. That marks an increase of 1.7 percent over 2015. Rather than finding themselves in debt again next January, shoppers inclined to use their credit cards this holiday season must recognize the importance of budgeting for all holiday expenses —including those that may not immediately come to mind, such as gratuities for service providers. Gratuities are gestures of kindness and appreciation during the holiday season. Although gratuities are not entirely necessary, many etiquette experts say certain people, particularly those who provide year-round services, are worthy of a little extra money this time of year. Consider thank-you notes for those people who don't land on this year's gratuity list. The following is a list of service workers whose efforts throughout the year are typically worthy of gratuities come the holiday season.
POSTAL WORKERS: Postal workers face the elements each and every day to make sure letters and packages arrive on time. Their work is made even more challenging during the rush of the holiday season, when mail flow increases considerably. The U.S. Postal Service forbids carriers from accepting cash gifts, but gift cards or other tokens of appreciation can be fitting. NEWSPAPER DELIVERY PERSON: Gift the equivalent of one month of the subscription price, which may be between $10 and 30. 42 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News

DAYCARE STAFF OR BABYSITTER: Those tasked with caring for children are worthy of a little something extra. A gift between $40 and $70 can be fitting. In addition, include a handmade gift from the children if kids are old enough. The Emily Post Institute suggests gifting one week's pay to a live-in nanny or au pair. HOUSEKEEPER: Up to one week's pay should suffice for housekeepers. PERSONAL CAREGIVER: Gift between one week and one month's salary for someone charged with caring for a loved one. Blending CELEBRATIONS BLENDED FAMILIES MAY HAVE ADDITIONAL FACTORS TO CONSIDER AS THE HOLIDAYS ARRIVE. COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
run deep come the holiday season. Holiday planning can be hectic, especially for blended families. Today's families are increasingly blended, meaning they're a combination of families due to divorce or death. Even though the holidays are meant to be joyous, navigating traditions and accommodating the unique needs of all involved — including cultural traditions, visitation schedules, rituals, and religious beliefs — can be challenging. But blended families need not fret as they attempt to negotiate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, or New Year's. LOGISTICS The first step to holiday planning is to keep in mind predetermined custody or visitation agreements. Although there can be hope for holiday flexibility and generosity, try to stick as close to existing arrangements as possible. Some families choose to divvy up
particular holidays throughout the year in advance. Others may do it as plans get arranged. As long as the arrangement is fair to everyone, the choice is up to the families. The plans should be made known to all involved. DISCUSS EXPECTATIONS The Stepfamily Association of America says that communication during the holiday season is vital, especially for children so they know what to expect. Writing down specific itineraries can help alleviate the stress of not knowing where they will be at a given time. All members of the family should vocalize how they feel about particular aspects of the holidays so that no one is disgruntled. Do not expect others to be mind readers. Perhaps one person is focusing a significant amount of energy on trimming the tree when that isn't as important to others. Discussing expectations can make planning that much easier.
44 • 2017 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE by Bangor Metro & Bangor Daily News
CREATE NEW TRADITIONS The holidays without everyone under the same roof enjoying traditions that have been part of celebrations for years can contribute to feelings of anxiety for people accustomed to these annual traditions. Draw the focus away from how things used to be done and create new traditions that all can anticipate. An annual outing to see a concert or show or hosting a holiday movie night might be a new tradition the entire blended family can enjoy. DON'T EXPECT PERFECTION Putting too much emphasis on trying to make the holidays perfect can backfire. All families must recognize that holiday celebrations will change. It can take time to find a new celebratory rhythm, and comparisons always will be made. It's acceptable to have mixed feelings about new traditions, but each member should go into the season with a positive attitude.

COOLEST TOYS This Holiday Season LEARN WHAT KIDS ARE HOPING TO FIND NESTLED UNDER THE TREE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
Christmas
and Chanukah may be celebrated toward the end of the year, but at the annual New York Toy Fair, the season for thinking about toys begins in February. This popular convention unveils the industry's hottest trends and toys, attracting more than 1,000 exhibitors. The Toy Fair, and recommendations by toy and game industry experts around the world, like Dr. Toy and The Toy Insider, help cement which toys are likely to end up on kids' holiday wish lists. For those shoppers who fell behind the curve and missed out on last year's break out "Hatchimal" hit, the following figure to be the most coveted items for this year of giving. • LEGO BOOST: Lego continues to reinvent itself, offering add-ons to its popular building brick model. Lego Boost takes advantage of the STEM trend by enabling children to build and code any of the five models of building sets. These include a cat, robot, guitar, rover, and building machine. Or, they can use the pieces to create their own designs. The models work with an app and can be coded to make different motions and sounds.
• NERF N-STRIKE ELITE: Nerf brand has been popular for decades, and the company continues to churn out popular items for boys and girls. The N-Strike Elite series has a number of incarnations to tempt sharpshooters. Nerf's new AccuStrike line is designed to improve accuracy with specially crafted darts that sail straighter than the original darts.
These are just a handful of the industry favorites this year. Also, keep an eye out for FisherPrice Movi, anything Star Wars, FurReal friends, Shopkins, and much more.
• COLLEGGTIBLES: Building upon the Hatchimal craze of last Christmas and early this year, Spin Master offers an addition to the very popular collectible toy niche. CollEGGtibles are much smaller than Hatchimals, but are equally fun. Smaller eggs hatch to reveal various colorful critters inside. Kids are apt to want to collect them all. • PIE FACE SKY HIGH: Hasbro keeps reinventing the Pie Face game, their runaway hit from 2016, which was awarded "Game of the Year" by the Toy Industry Association. In the Sky High version, one player hits a lever with a mallet, hoping to deliver their opponent a face full of pie cream.

Santa Letter-Writing
SECRETS COURTESY OF METRO NEWS SERVICE
LETTER WRITING TIPS: • Identify who is writing the letter and share some details about your life. • Make sure you've been nice and well-behaved all year. • Print neatly so your letter is easy for Santa to read. • Ask Santa how he has been, and engage in some polite conversation. • Politely ask for the toys you'd like. Understand that Santa is busy, so keep the list brief. • Thank Santa in advance for his kindness. Hopefully, he'll have time to reply. • Write and mail the letter as early as possible, as things tend to get busy as Christmas nears!
Dear Santa,
At
the tip of the North Pole resides a jolly man who collects letters from children asking him to deliver all of their hearts' desires. According to Smithsonian, the practice of writing to St. Nick dates back more than 150 years. Early depictions of Santa show him as a disciplinarian. The first Christmastime Santa letters were actually sent by Santa, rather than the other way around. Such letters encouraged children to be good boys and girls. Eventually, an illustration by Thomas Nast depicted "Santaclaussville, N.P." as Santa's address, providing children with a place where they could send their correspondences to the big guy in red. The Universal Postal Union indicates that Americans sent more than one million such letters in 2012, the most recent year from which figures are available. To account for the staggering number of letters sent, various post offices and postal programs were established to help Santa with the task of tackling children's wish lists. With so many letters, Santa Claus sometimes he needs assistance with reading and responding to the thousands upon thousands of letters sent to him each year. In 2016, the USPS instituted a new letter-writing option that enables parents or guardians to include a personalized response letter back to children who address letters to Santa. The package can be postmarked to: North Pole Postmark Postmaster, 4141 Postmark Drive, Anchorage, AK 99530-9998. Many other letters to Santa end up routing to various post offices where thousands of volunteer "elves" can adopt letters and make children's wishes come true. A "Letters to Santa" program enables children in serious need to get items that can help keep them safe and happy. Santa has even gone high-tech with personalized videos and pictures as well. A quick web search can yield the instructions on how prospective helpers can get started.
