The 22nd Biennial Coal Show is ready to roll By CHARLES BOOTHE Bluefield Daily Telegraph The 22nd Biennial Bluefield Coal Show is ready to roll. Set for Sept. 13-15 at the Brushfork Armory, the show brings together coal industry professionals from all aspects of the industry and related services as well as exhibitors. Charlile Peters, who has been general chair of the show since 1976, said the show is “blessed” this year to have more than 180 exhibitors. Peters said it’s been “an interesting time” in the coal industry since the last coal show and a lot of changes in the industry have resulted in companies merging, changing names, having different owners and some going out ouf business. But the coal show is “doing fine,” he said. Josh Cline, CEO and president the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce, the show’s sponsor, said exhibitors will be there from 27 states as well as England and Canada. Delegations from India and Africa are also scheduled to come. “This is a big deal internationally,” he said. “They are coming to Bluefield. Things are looking up and that’s a good thing.” Cline said the show has an almost $4 million impact on the area. Bud Clapp, chairman of the chamber’s board, said the coal show is big for the area. “We take a lot of pride in this event,” he said, adding that volunteers throughout the community make the show a suc-

The show is for the industry only, and those attending will be shuttled from Mitchell Stadium to the armory because all the space at the armory, including the parking lot, will be used for the show. Attendees at the show will include coal operators, superintendents, company presidents, mine foremen, engineers, purchasing agents, chemical workers, belt coordinators, maintenance managers, technical and service personnel, and other members of the industry. Several technical seminars are also on the agenda. The premier eastern regional show is “A Coal Show for Coal People,” and Cline said this should be a great show. “Changes in policy by current administrators, at
the national and state levels, has provided the coal industry a desired boost allowing for further promotion, development and extraction of the region’s leading natural resourse,” he said. “This industry trade show will showcase the latest in mining equipment, services and technology to leaders across the industry. Hal Quinn, president and CEO of the National Mining Association, will be the keynote speaker at the Media Appreciation Breakfast on Sept. 13. “He will provide a forecast and in-depth analysis on the state of the industry for members of the industry,” Cline said. Bill Reid, with Coal News/Coal Zoom, will chair several technical seminars with respresentatives across the industry providing new details on methods, trends and
designs for a safer and
more productive coal industry, he added. “A number of hands-on demonstrations, a high level of networking opportunity, and several technical seminars continue to make this the premier industry show for the coal industyr east of the Mississippi River,” said Peters. “It truly is a coal show for coal people.” Kim Allen, chamber board member and immedate past chair of the board, has been on the board for 20 years and involved in the coal show each time it was held during her tenure. “Registration is where I spend most of my time duirng the show,” she said. Allen said she has always enjoyed the show and happy with the number of exhibitors this year.
“That is great,” she said. “We knew it would be less than it has been in the past, but the vendors will be excited to have that many people here.” Exhibitors and guests will enjoy two nights of entertainment while at the trade show. Tuesday, Sept. 12, will be the Exhibitors’ Reception at teh Quality Hotel and Conference Center, Cline said. Wednesday night, Sept. 13, will be the Monte Carlo Casino Night at the RailYard. A golf tournament is also set for exhibitors and attendees on Sept. 12. It will be hosted by CEDAR at Fincastle on the Mountain. — Contact Charles Boothe at cboothe@ bdtonline.com

Bluefield, Va., company returns to Coal Show By CHARLES BOOTHE Bluefield Daily Telegraph A local exhibitor at this year’s Bluefield Coal Show, and every year since 1976, is AMRPEMCO, which was PEMCO until a recent acquisition. Provider of custom electrical solutions to various industries, PEMCO was acquired by American Mine Research, Inc. (AMR), a mining industry support company based in Rocky Gap, Va. The Bluefield, Va., company has not only participated in the show, it has also always volunteered to handle the electrical needs of the show. “They have provided the power centers ever since we have started a coal show and we started in 1976,” said Debbie Maynard, who is with the chamber and organizer of the show. “We have trusted the power to them.” Gary Pennington, who retired from AMRPEMCO two years ago, has been on the electrical services committee for the coal show all of those years, and is back this year. “We install the power centers that PEMCO provides and the power company (AEP) hooks up to the (source),” he said. “We ground the power centers and run the cable for different customer requirements.” Pennington said P.T. Spangler and Calvin Shoemaker are also longterm members of the committee. “It’s a great company to work for and always has been,” he said of PEMCO. When the coal show started, the company loaned out Pennington and James Money, who has retired, to the chamber for “eight or nine” days to work on the show.
Gary Pennington (front, second from left) is pictured with other volunteers of the electrical services committee that handles helping PEMCO (now AMRPENCO) providing power to the Bluefield Coal Show. Pennington, a long time employ of PEMCO who recently retired, has been working on this since 1976, the same year the company started involvement in the coal show. “We were the first ones to be there and the last ones to leave,” Pennington said. But he makes it clear putting on a show that is the largest one other than an international show in Las Vegas requires many volunteers. “The electrical committee is just one of a small army of volunteers,” he said. Pennington said most of the volunteers as well as the exhibitors have grown to know each other well. “The coal show is almost like a homecoming,” he said. “It’s a chance for us to get together every two years and spend time together. We all just enjoy doing the work.” Pennington said it’s also good for the community and the area. “It is a very big project and a very important project for the community and the coal industry,” he said. And it’s something he and the other volunteers look
forward to. “It’s always a lot of fun,” he said. “We enjoy each other’s company and I enjoy working with the chamber. But most of all, what it does for the community and what it does for the industry.” Two other companies, East River Metals, Inc. (ERM), and Custom Manufacturing Services, Inc. (CMS), are sister companies to AMR and headquartered in Rocky Gap. They have two other facilities in Princeton, W.Va., on Rogers and Brick streets. The Graf family, natives of Bluefield, Va., owns all of the companies, along with some employee ownership of the companies. “I have known and respected PEMCO for a very long time. It is a very proud and accomplished company. Their team has done an extraordinary job building a reputation for manufacturing
extremely high quality electrical solutions,” said Robert Graf, AMR’s CEO, when the acquisition was announced last year. “AMR and PEMCO share a strong commitment to their customers. The combination of the companies’ global and local strengths will allow us to expand our product lines and deliver a more comprehensive experience to our customers. We look forward to bringing together the two companies to deliver the best solutions in the market.” “By teaming up with one of the industry’s leading monitoring, control, and communications companies, PEMCO will expand its presence and reach a larger audience worldwide. We plan to leverage AMR’s global sales network and extensive engineering resources,” said Jay Johnson, executive vice president of PEMCO. “We
are extremely excited to combine our teams to meet the demands of the mining and industrial marketplace and to deliver improved technology and services to new and existing customers.” PEMCO works with industries in mining, oil and gas, power generation, transit and nuclear. Product lines include power centers, substations, dry-type transformers, industrial modular buildings, custom power panels, and ground check/ground fault protection devices. The acquisition provides customers with an “unparallelled power and control experience by combining AMR’s global sales network and electronic monitoring, control and communications product lines with PEMCO’s electrical expertise,” company officials said. “Merging the sales and
engineering resources of AMR and PEMCO is very exciting,” said David Graf, president of AMR, ERM and CMS. “PEMCO’s custom electrical designs and building solutions will greatly enhance AMR’s sales efforts in multiple markets such as international mining and the U.S. oil & gas industry. In turn, integrating the electronic monitoring, communications, and automation controls expertise of AMR’s technical staff will create a new line of technologically advanced power centers for underground and surface mining.” Graf said the key to the acquisition is “utilizing the extensive manufacturing skills and capabilities at CMS and ERM, which provide precision sheet metal fabrication, electro-mechanical assembly, and powder coating services to AMR and a wide variety of OEM’s in many diversified industries.” “We believe making the most of these many resources will dramatically make us more competitive in the marketplace,” he added. AMR was founded in 1975 to support the mining industry’s demand for improved electrical safety and protection of AC-powered machinery. Providing the world’s first “pilotless” continuity-type ground check monitors on low and high voltage cables, AMR has sold over 50,000 ground monitor circuits worldwide and now offers a variety of monitoring, control and communications electronics for mining, aggregates, oil and gas, water/wastewater, tunneling and general industry. — Contact Charles Boothe at cboothe@bdtonline.com

Ronn Robinson (far right) recently posed for photos of the 2017 Bluefield Coal Show’s committee members at Fincastle on the Mountain. Robinson, a member of the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce’s executive committee, is helping organize the show for the first time.
Robinson participates in organization of Coal Show By CHARLES BOOTHE Bluefield Daily Telegraph This is Ronn Robinson’s first year participating in the organization of the Bluefield Coal Show. Robinson, external affairs manager with AEP (American Electric Power), attended the 2015 show, though, so is familiar with the event. “That was my first coal show,” he said, adding that he was impressed with the show and enjoyed it. “I am now on the board of directors with the chamber.” As a member of the chamber’s executive committee, he was asked to chair the economic enhancement division and help with the coal show. Robinson said he has enjoyed the work with the show, but he gives credit to the show’s success to its general chairman, Charlie Peters, and to all the volunteers who help. “This is his (Peters’) baby,” Robinson said. “He has fostered it into what it is today.”
Peters has been general chair of the coal show since it began in 1976. “But we couldn’t do it without volunteers,” he said. “The chamber is a not-for-profit organization. To conduct this type of thing, we have to rely on the dedication of dozens and dozens of people to put it no, to stage it. A lot of different elements go on in making it happen.” Robinson also praised the chamber’s staff. “They do a good job.” All of the work has to be done because it is a huge show, one of the chamber’s biggest events. “It’s a big part of the chamber ’s success because it means so much to our operating budget,” he said. “There are others in the country,” he said, including a big show in Kentucky. “But this is one of the largest. It’s one of the premier events of its type in the country.” It also is a premier event for the area’s businesses. “This has a great economic impact on the area,”
he said. “That is proof that a rising tide lifts everything.” Robinson said that any time people visit the area they spend money, and “it helps us all.” Many area businesses participate, including AEP. “AEP has supported it for several years,” he said. “We are the sponsors of the media breakfast.” The Media Appreciation Breakfast is set for opening morning, Sept. 13. Hal Quinn, president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association (NMA) will be the guest speaker. Robinson said people in the coal industry always look forward to the show. “It is a showcase for coal people, for technology in coal, for ideas related to coal mining,” he said, “from equipment to safety to the machines you operate. They all have a place at the coal show. “And it’s been like that since it started.” — Contact Charles Boothe at cboothe@bdtonline.com

A drone flies by for a close inspection of a storage tank. R.L. Structural Engineering of Bluefield, Va. now offers the drone service in the mining industry.
Drones soaring in as new exhibitor to Coal Show By CHARLES BOOTHE Bluefield Daily Telegraph The Bluefield Coal Show will have a brand new exhibitor this year, and it’s one that will capture a lot of attention. Robin Lee, owner of R.L. Structural Engineering in Bluefield, Va., will be on hand to demonstrate a new tool for the mining industry: drones.
“We just started this back in the beginning of this year and it’s a new service we offer,” she said. Lee, who has worked in the mining business as an engineer for almost 28 years, said the drones are used for several purposes. Those include pit and quarry surveying, inspections, stockpile inventory, mapping and photography. “We have two licensed
and certified remote pilots on staff,” she said, herself and her husband Roger Lee. The training lasts two months, she said, and the certification is in operating a small unmanned aircraft system (SUAS) and is required for any commercial work. Lee said not only does the training include flying the drone, but also all of
the regulations involved, even which airports that can be used. For example, a commercial drone can only be flown 400 feet into the air, never at night and never above people. Special permission from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) is required for any deviation from the regulations, she added.
Lee, a McDowell County native who is a licensed engineer in Virginia and West Virginia, said her drone is a DJI Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter. “We can capture data much safer, faster and more economical than traditional ground based systems,” she said. Lee said drone services for the mining and aggregate sector also include
structural inspections, truss inspections, cut/ fill analysis, construction progress, highwall monitoring and pond erosion monitoring. Her company is a consulting engineering firm providing engineering services to municipalities, commercial, industrial and aggregate related
