A picture is worth
100 words
Ana Costa e Silva
An introduction in 100 words Bearing in mind the syllabus topic Citizenship and Multiculturalism, 12th Form, the students searched for and chose a picture which, in some way, would show the disrespect for the Human Rights. Within the theme “A picture is worth 100 words”, the students wrote a text about the chosen picture using 1OO words, no more no less. This “Projeto de Integração Curricular” was very important to the students, both by developing their language skills and their citizenship awareness. Something to highlight is the students’ effort to fully accomplish the objectives of this project and their availability to always improve and/or redo. Ana Costa e Silva
Ana Rita Simões In the picture, we can see article 7 of the Human Rights declaration being violated. All people are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination. Right before our eyes, every day, this specific right is violated at ease and not really anyone seems to do something about it. All around the world people from different backgrounds from ours are treated poorly by those who should protect them at all costs.

This obviously violates their freedom of choice, the chance of getting education, quality of life and even their security.
In this picture, we can see some children who have been forced to become soldiers and fight in conflicts. This obviously violates their freedom of choice, the chance of getting education, quality of life and even their security. This is a sad reality that children can live in some parts of the globe, in this case somewhere in the middle east, where the number of child soldiers has increased in the last years. In my opinion, children must be protected from the adults’ wars and not directly involved in them, they deserve their Human Rights to be respected and peace.
Carolina Camarinho Human rights are the basic rights of all human beings and, considering that the disrespect for them results in barbaric acts that outrages humanity's conscience, I decided to choose a picture where the violation of these rights is evident and talk a little about it. Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that "No one will be subjected to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." I chose this image because in spite of all the bad things the human being can do, we cannot apply inhuman punishments as that would make us irrational and unscrupulous beings.

Silenced, diminished, and oppressed to men’s will.
In this picture, we can see an Arabian old man wielding a machete and brutally, potentially fatally, punishing a woman. We can also point out the multitude of men just viewing the “show” in the background as if that was a normal thing to happen. She is being punished due to accusations of “adultery”. This picture portrays the violation of Human Rights that is customary in some Arabian countries, especially the ones of Muslim religion, where women are seen as inferior human beings and are treated this way just because of their gender. Silenced, diminished, and oppressed to men’s will.
Carolina Oliveira The Human Rights are, nowadays, applied all over the world, but there are still too many countries where these do not occur. For example, the article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is being brutally disrespected, since more than 820 millions of people are experiencing hunger. I chose this image because it is the reality that sometimes we find hard to believe in. It shows us one malnourished African child in poor conditions, therefore, it must be an appeal to the conscience of each one of us in order to do something to make these people's lives better.

Diana Silva In the Declaration of Human Rights, it is said that “everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person”. However, there are millions of people that live in fear, in poor conditions, that need to run away and fight for living, and thousands end up dying, just because they had the infelicity to live in a country that is at war. This is exactly what is happening in this image, where it´s shown a destroyed Syria, where the war has been going on for 10 years, and its inhabitants with their kids trying to find a safe place. A destroyed Syria, where the war has been going on for 10 years, and its inhabitants with their kids trying to find a safe place
Duarte Cruz Every human right is important, but I consider Article 10 one of the most emphasized since it isn’t respected in many places, as we see in the image. Freedom of expression is what gives us the power and strength needed to confront and expose something we think it isn’t done the right way. This article is what gives us freedom to hold opinions without the interference of public authorities and other forms of censorship. One example of where it isn’t respected is in public protests, where people, many times, are silenced by the government just because they hold different opinions.

Learning, and having the same opportunities that all children in the world have, which is very unfair.
Over the past few years wars in countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and Iraq have caused thousands of families to flee their country in search of a better life for their children, their loved ones and for themselves. Many first world countries have ignored these families, condemning them to disgrace, and unfortunately with this, tens or even hundreds of thousands of children are losing one of the best parts of their life, which is education, losing the opportunity of making friends, having fun, learning, and having the same opportunities that all children in the world have, which is very unfair.
Edna Jesus According to UNICEF, “nearly 1 in 10 children are subjected to child labor worldwide, with some forced into hazardous work through trafficking”. The consequences are overwhelming. It can result in physical and mental harm, even death. It can also lead to slavery and sexual exploitation. In almost every case, child labor limits access to education and threatens children’s future. Migrants and refugee children, for example, risk being forced into work or trafficked, exposed to violence and other human rights violations. Whatever the cause is, child labor represents social inequality and discrimination both for boys and girls, and robs their childhood.

Nine minutes, enough time to create a symbol for the black community and to start the black-lives-matter movement, a journey to equality.
A convenience store employee called on 911 and told the police that George Floyd, a black man, had bought cigarettes with a counterfeit bill. The Minneapolis officer Mr. Chauvin after pinning Mr. Floyd to the ground, kept his knee on his neck for almost 9 minutes, and did not remove it even after Mr. Floyd´s appeal for him to stop, because he couldn´t breathe, and after his loss of consciousness. Floyd died with his human rights spit on. Nine minutes, enough time to create a symbol for the black community and to start the black-livesmatter movement, a journey to equality.
Hugo Oliveira There are countless examples of human rights violations. In the photo, we can see a young boy whose Article 3: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security” and Article 5: “ Freedom from torture and inhuman treatment” are being violated. It is clear that he has been trained as a soldier like 20000 more by Lord's Resistance Army, the guerrillas of Northern Uganda who kidnap and compel children to fight against the Ugandan government. The child, holding an AK-47, is visibly unhappy with his eyes mirror anger, rage and hatred while appealing for mercy and a happy life.

Inês Cação No one should have to leave their country because of the war, or anything else. Everyone should have the right to stay in their homelands, as long as they want. People everyday are forced to put their lives in danger, because staying in their country is risking their life and their family. Children all over the globe are being forbidden to have a normal childhood, go to school, and being normal kids, to run and eventually have the chance of surviving. No one should have to run in order to be safe, let alone children who should just be happy. People everyday are forced to put their lives in danger, because staying in their country is risking their life and their family.
Joana Faria Unfortunately around the world millions of children are forced to work and the main reason why this happens is poverty. Consequently child labourers suffer severe injuries from using dangerous equipment without protection. In addition they are forced to ignore the pain and continue working due to having no rights because they are working in an illegal manner. Besides working the children have to leave school. They can’t have the education they need to help them get a dignity job in the future. Children are our future so we need to hear them. They have the right to education and protection.

Photographs are a crucial way of disseminating ideas and creating a sense of shared humanity.
Visual images have played an important role in defining and arguing on behalf of human rights. Photographs are a crucial way of disseminating ideas and creating a sense of shared humanity. In this photo, we see a huge violation, when people have to take matter into their own hands because their rights were violated when they did not feel safe in their own country. That’s not fair and when we see a baby, asleep aboard a ship after her Vietnamese family being rescued at sea, this should create in us a sense of proximity and humanity towards the other humans.
João Encarnação I chose this image because it tells in a very brief way all that human rights are. We should all be born and grow up with the same rights and duties. It is not simply the color of our skin, our religion or the place we are born that is going to define us as a person. We should all have the right to have a home, a job, have the basic conditions of life, not be underestimated and put aside by society, because in the end we are all equal. We shouldn’t discriminate so we can be better people. It is not simply the color of our skin, our religion or the place we are born that is going to define us as a person.
Juliana Gil Human rights are norms that protect the dignity of all humans, as they dominate the way in which they live individually in society and with each other, as well as their relationship with the State and the obligations it has towards them. I chose this image, because it is shocking and because it is visible the violation of this right, more specifically of article 5 (Nobody will be subjected to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.). We can see a human being, a child, whose childhood was stolen and forced to work, which is an inhumane attitude.

Laura Fernandes This month new results were known about abusive behaviours in teenagers' relationships. The data are frightening, because more than 50% of teenagers consider abuses acceptable. The picture shows a girl running from a man. Her face and neck are hurt. This may represent the reality of thousands of teenagers, but I chose this particular image because we also can see that she is running from what causes her suffering. This is also a message for those who live these abusive relationships: it is possible to get out of that and move on, but with precaution ! Fight that back! Fight that back!
Leonardo Reis Due to poverty, there are millions of individuals who don’t have access to a sufficient standard of living to ensure themselves and their families health and well-being. It’s a very noticeable and important issue that must be eradicated, not by the small group of people who are already trying to do it, but by everyone. If we all contributed, we wouldn’t be only helping by providing access to the most basic goods and necessary for survival, but also by giving possibilities to the poorest countries to generate their own wealth and to fight for the fulfillment of the Human Rights.
Giving possibilities to the poorest countries to generate their own wealth and to fight for the fulfillment of the Human Rights.
Mafalda Magalhães The war in Syria has been going on for 10 years. In these long 10 years, due to this conflict, more than 400,000 people have died, more than 1.4 million people have been injured and many other human rights violations have taken place. Some children do not go to school, the population lives in poverty without access to basic resources, people leave their home where they have built a life. So it is important to find a solution to this conflict, because the more the years go by, the more human rights will be violated and the more lives destroyed. The war in Syria has been going on for 10 years.
Mariana Breia Racism, in all of its forms, is the underacknowledged human rights problem of our day. Variously defined, racism threatens the lives and rights of millions of people around the world. The United States offers a sad example where, despite anti-discrimination laws and equal protection rights, the government has failed to protect its people from racism. Police continue to racially profile and murder African Americans at alarming rates, prompting public outcry but little remedy. Last year, in the midst of a global pandemic, a massive movement towards racial consciousness emerged to remember us that our skin color doesn’t define our value.
Racism, in all of its forms, is the underacknowledged human rights problem of our day.
Mariana Reis In this image we can see a refugee girl crying crossing a stream in the hot sun on a muddy rice field in Bangladesh. There are several human rights that are being disrespected behind this photo, for example article numbers 13, 14, 17… Everyone has the right to have a home with conditions where they can feel safe and if they don’t, they should have the option of looking for a better life outside their country, but when refugees try to do that, most of them have to do it illegally because in many countries they are still not welcomed. In many countries they are still not welcomed.
Rodrigo Gomes This image depicts a traditional practice, named female genital mutilation, that consists in the removal of external female genitalia without a medical reason. Its inhumane aim is containing female sexual desires. Today, there are over 200.000.000 girls and women, who have undergone such a cruelty. FGM is painfully practiced on girls without consent, violating the Human.Rights, as the right to health, the right to be free from torture, the right to be secure and the right to be alive. Neither the pain that this little girl is feeling nor the long-term complications ahead of her can be described with words.
Neither the pain that this little girl is feeling nor the long-term complications ahead of her can be described with words.
Tiago Buco Every human right is important, but I consider Article 16 one of the most important because we all need education for a civilized world. As we can see in this image, a kid that should be in school is working hard, being exploited . The right to education is indispensable for the exercise of other human rights and is a key to combat the major problems of the present like racism. One example of where it isn’t respected is in the Third World countries, where the kids usually leave school to work to help their family getting some food. The right to education is indispensable for the exercise of other human rights.
Tomás Fajardo The Human Right I decided to talk about is freedom of speech (Article 10) as I believe it is necessary for a country to allow its citizens to express their true feelings and opinions. In this image, freedom of speech is being disrespected as the police forces are violently attacking two people who were bringing more attention to the problems involving Tibet. Clearly, this is an example where freedom of speech or expression is being disrespected, as well as oppressed. Not only that, but such thing is also being done in an extremely violent way, which aggravates the situation even more.
I believe it is necessary for a country to allow its citizens to express their true feelings and opinions

In this picture we can see a violation of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights established by the UN. This declaration in the Articles 25 – 35 states that everyone should have access to a standard of living, including food, clothing, housing and right to benefit from medical treatment. As it shows we can see a naked baby with signs of malnutrition. On the background, there’s a vulture waiting for the baby to faint in order to feed itself. Clearly this baby was in immediate need for food, clothes, shelter along with healthcare assistance. Here the human rights were not accomplished.
