Buddy Pelletier Memorial Tournament Set for July One of Bogue Banks most beloved events returns to Atlantic Beach this summer for its 20th and final event. The Buddy Pelletier Memorial Longboard Classic takes over the seashore July 24-25, luring amateurs and professionals alike for a little friendly competition in a variety of categories. Annually, competitors range in age from 8 to 55 and over. The surfing competition isn’t just for surfers, though. Entry fees, T-shirt sales and other donations help fund college scholarships and grants to members of the East Coast surfing community. “It’s going to be a very interesting tournament this year – we’re going old school, back to our roots,” teases Lisa Pelletier-Harman. “And we are definitely going out on a high note. The timing is great with the community coming back together and everything being safer. We’re really looking forward to a great tournament.” For many, this mid-summer contest has become a tradition, not only for the prime chance to catch a few waves, but also to pay homage to the competition’s namesake, Buddy Pelletier. A topranked professional surfer and three-time winner of the Puerto Rican National Longboard Championship, Pelletier came home to the Crystal Coast in the early 1990s to spend his final days with friends and family before succumbing to cancer. It is through those same friends and family members, as well as new ones made along the way, that 14 JULY - AUGUST 2021

his legacy lives on through the nonprofit Buddy Pelletier Surfing Scholarship Foundation, which provides humanitarian aid and scholarships to the surfing community. Longboards, unlike their shorter counterparts, allow competitors to ride even the smallest of waves, leaving onlookers with plenty of action to take in and giving entrants the opportunity to showcase their skill. While adult boards measure about nine feet, junior boards must be three feet longer than the youngster’s height. “It’s been 20 years so it feels like the appropriate time to put the contest to rest,” said Jessica Holleman, director of the classic. “It’s a well-loved and respected community event just like the man himself and we would like the memory of the contest and of Buddy to bring up those feelings of joy and friendship and good sportsmanship that we feel every year on the beach.” Surfing begins each day at 7am and generally lasts until 5pm on Saturday. A beach party with live music is planned for Saturday evening with live music by Selah Dubb. A free shuttle will be available all day Saturday. The awards ceremony takes place Sunday afternoon. The entry form and additional information about the contest, sponsorship opportunities and the foundation can be found at www.buddypelletier.com.

AT FORT MACON Make a visit to Fort Macon State Park to learn a little history this summer. The fort itself stands as a sentinel at the opening of Beaufort Inlet on the end of Bogue Banks, just a few miles from Atlantic Beach. Construction began in 1826 and while the site has always been focused on guarding the inlet, it has been in many hands through the years. It was garrisoned in 1834, but fell into the hands of the Union Army in 1862 after a fiery battle. From 1867-1876, the fort served as a federal prison, but was again garrisoned during the Spanish-American war. It was closed in 1903 and offered as military surplus in 1923. North Carolina purchased the property, creating the state’s second state park in 1924. It was restored in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was again put into action during World War II, but since then has been available as a historical point of interest everyone can visit. 16 JULY - AUGUST 2021

The site features over 425 acres with beaches, maritime forests, scenic dunes, fishing, swimming and a 3.4-mile walking/jogging trail. Take a step back in time and tour the fort. Learn about its history by taking one of the four free guided tours daily. There is an array of programs given by park rangers throughout the year. These events include firing one of the 32-pound cannons every Wednesday at 4pm, two musket firings every Saturday and Sunday and a two-day Civil War Reenactment in September.

Batter Up!

Baseball is as American as apple pie – and it’s a great way to spend a summer evening. The Coastal Plain League’s Morehead City Marlins takes to the mound through July, making it a perfect way for visitors to enjoy a chill evening in the bleachers and cheer on these up and comers. The wooden bat team draws some of the nation’s hottest summer collegiate players, giving guests a great game to watch. It’s a win-win situation – players are able to improve their game and fans get to kick back, enjoy a hot dog or two and enjoy some great entertainment. Blending the Crystal Coast’s love for baseball and billfishing, the aptly named Marlins have been putting on a great show at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City for more than 10 years. “After a long 2020, the Marlins are excited to get back on the field, and the season will be here before we know it,” team owner Buddy Bengel said. “We are thrilled to welcome our great fans back to Big Rock Stadium for the upcoming season to celebrate our back-to-back championships and showcase all of the exciting new additions to our organization. The 2021 season is gearing up to be the best season in Marlins history.”

Home games are slated throughout the end of July. A full schedule can be found at mhcmarlins. com/schedules. Single game tickets are available, or fans can choose to purchase four and ten game packages. In addition, special rates are available to large groups. For more information on the Coastal Plain League, visit the league website at www.coastalplain.com, and catch a full schedule of home games at www.mhcmarlins.com.

BEAUFORT & DOWN EAST While Beaufort offers a beautiful walking waterfront, the picturesque Down East communities of Carteret County, many of which are part of a Scenic Byway, provide a great opportunity for a car trip. Beaufort (pronounced “Bō-furt”), is well deserving of its “America’s Coolest Small Town” title bestowed in 2012 by Budget Travel, with its eclectic blend of history and the contemporary amenities we have all grown to appreciate. FRESH & LOCAL: Olde Beaufort Farmers’ Market fills Courthouse Square each Saturday morning with a plethora of locally-sourced products. Open from 9am1pm, visitors will find great fruits, veggies, jams and bread as well as art and crafts created by area residents.

WELCOME BACK, SPOUTER: We’re excited to welcome the Spouter Inn back to Beaufort. When the restaurant was destroyed by fire in late 2019, many area foodies were wondering if they’d ever taste that perfect crab & corn chowder again. Well - wonder no more! With the name shortened to just Spouters, the new spot is located just next door to the former site and will focus on lunch fare. Yes, that includes the popular crab & corn chowder as well as our favorite, the Ole’ Crabbie pita. We wish Robin and Matt the best! We’re so glad they’re back!

SHRIMP FRY: The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center on Harkers Island celebrates the season with an All-American Shrimp Fry from 5-7:30pm on Saturday, July 10. Museum staff will use the occasion to celebrate area teachers, school administrators and support staff, who are welcome to attend for free. Diners are welcome to dine outside under the oak trees or pick up their shrimp and trimmings to go. Tickets can be purchased by calling 252-728-1500.

SUMMER SCIENCE SCHOOL: The NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort keeps youngsters busy throughout the summer months with its wildly popular Summer Science School program. Classes range from a few hours to a few days and programs are designed for specific age groups. Topics include Seashore Life, Pirates!, Fish & Fishing and others. Fees depend upon the length of the program. For more information, visit www.ncmaritimemuseumbeaufort.com.

Cape Lookout National Seashore Best known for its towering lighthouse covered in black and white diamonds, Cape Lookout National Seashore is a 56-mile stretch of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, spanning from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet. Three pristine barrier islands make up the national seashore – North Core Banks, South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks. Accessible only by private boat or ferry, this incredible ribbon of sand hosts unparalleled fishing, shelling and a working lighthouse. The undeveloped seashore allows for true-to-nature camping, features a restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a boardwalk to the beach and regular ranger programs in the summer. Ferry transportation to the islands is available from both Beaufort and Harkers Island. Call 252-728-7433 for pricing and reservations. North and South Core Banks, both noted for wonderful shelling, clamming and surf fishing, offer rustic cabins as an alternative to camping from April through November. Many visitors come to the National Seashore to view the lighthouse, a landmark since 1859, and to enjoy the access to both a sound facing beach and an ocean facing beach. 28 JULY - AUGUST 2021

The Light Station Visitor Center, found near the lighthouse ferry dock, houses exhibits on lighthouse history and early shipwrecks and rescues. Across the water on picturesque Shackleford Banks, history comes in a four-legged model. Sit and enjoy the shoreline and keep your eyes peeled for the protected Shackleford Banks wild horses, which seemingly go about their day with no regard for their guests. The seashore’s main visitor center is located on Harkers Island, which houses additional exhibits. An indoor theater offers a short film and a nature trail winds along the shore to an observation deck overlooking Core Sound. Public restrooms and a nearby picnic area are available and wheelchair accessible. For more information call 252-728-2250 or visit www.nps.gov/calo. All visitors should remember this is a remote, natural territory with no food vendors, limited fresh water access and no lifeguards. Be prepared to bring in everything you may need during your visit and carry out all that bring in.

Pirates Attack

Beaufort Pirate Invasion Set for Aug. 13-15

Get ready for cannons, eye patches and invading pirates as Beaufort prepares the town for its annual influx of pirates – the Beaufort Pirate Invasion. Townsfolk will battle the pirates for control of Beaufort on Friday through Sunday, Aug. 13-15. Amid the many contradictory stories surrounding famed and not so famed pirates there is plenty of mystery and fantasy. Pirates add to the lure of the sea, living a life with the promise of untold freedoms along with perilous stories that chill our souls. The Beaufort Pirate Invasion remembers those days of drama and excitement through sword fights, weapon demonstrations, costume contests, live music, dancing – and perhaps a little grog. But Beaufort’s experience with pirates hasn’t always been so jolly. In 1747, so lore tells us, the scourge of the sea found its way to the sleepy hamlet of Beaufort, overtaking the town and pillaging as they went, running residents out of town. This did not set well with Major Enoch Ward and his militia of 58 men. They attempted to stop the ransacking and looting to no avail. Major Enoch Ward, however, refused to relinquish his duties. He scoured the countryside, urging farmers to 30 JULY - AUGUST 2021

help him take up the fight. Within three days, he had brought together 100 farmers which he armed with whatever weapons they could find. Major Ward, alongside Col. Thomas Lorick, returned to Beaufort with his hodgepodge militia and dispelled the unwelcome visitors from the town. During the annual Pirate Invasion, the story will again be told through music, dance, reenactments, special events in a family friendly environment. Held at the Gallant’s Channel complex at the base of the Beaufort high-rise bridge, the gated festival will include more than 200 professional performers, included magicians, sword fighters, stilt walkers, musicians and more. Visitors can expect an array of demonstrations, mock battles and storytelling. Costumes are encouraged. Special events include the annual Yo, Ho, Ho, and a Bottle O’ RUN, a 5K and 1-mile fun run planned for Saturday, July 3. Tickets for the Pirate Invasion are $10 and good for all three days. They can be purchased by calling 252241-9049. To learn more, visit www.beaufortpirateinvasion.com.

Swim Safely Surrounded by coastline, water safety is always in the forefront of our minds. Whether you’ve been taking ocean dips your entire life or are new to taking the plunge, there are some important safety measures that should be kept in mind. From the National Safety Council: • Don’t go in the water unless you know how to swim; swim lessons are available for all ages • Never swim alone • Learn CPR and rescue techniques • Make sure the body of water matches your skill level; swimming in a pool is much different than swimming in a lake or river, where more strength is needed to handle currents • If you do get caught in a current, don’t try to fight it; stay calm and float with it, or swim parallel to the shore until you can swim free • Swim in areas supervised by a lifeguard • Don’t push or jump on others • Don’t dive in unfamiliar areas • Never drink alcohol when swimming; alcohol is involved in about half of all male teen drownings, according to KidsHealth. org Rip currents are the most common cause of drowning. Caused by narrow channels of fast-moving water that are prevalent along the coasts. These currents can move at speeds of up to eight feet per second, faster than an Olympic swimmer, and make novices feel like they can’t get back to shore no matter how hard they swim. Lifeguards rescue tens of thousands of people from rip currents in the U.S. every year, but it is estimated that 100 people are killed by rip currents annually. If caught in a rip current, don’t fight it! Swim parallel to the shore and swim back to land at an angle. Tips for getting out of the rip: • Check conditions before entering the water: are any warning flags up? Ask a lifeguard about water con-

ditions, beach conditions, and potential hazards. • While in the water, stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures. • If you are caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight it. • Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Then, turn and swim to shore. • Alternately, float or tread water until you are free of the rip current and then head to shore. • If you can’t make it to shore, draw attention to yourself by waving and calling for help.

HIKING THE

Crystal Coast

Given Carteret County’s rich and diverse geography, hiking is not only a regular activity – it’s a must-do for anyone interested in seeing the wide range of natural settings Eastern North Carolina has to offer. From marshy wetlands to dense forest, the region is best viewed on foot. And with the coast’s inclusion in the state’s Mountains to the Sea Trail, more people than ever are finding that the Crystal Coast has so much more to offer than a sunny day along our shores. Here’s a sampling of popular hiking spots around Carteret County. Hoffman & Roosevelt Trails Length: 1.2 & .5 miles Overview: Located at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, the more strenuous Roosevelt Trail and the .5 mile family-friendly Alice Hoffman Nature Trail roam through the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area on Bogue Banks, passing marshes winding their way through the maritime forest. Be sure to call ahead as the trails can only be accessed during aquarium hours. Aquarium entry fees may apply Directions: The aquarium is located on Roosevelt Boulevard, off of Hwy 58, 5 miles from Atlantic Beach. Hoop Pole Creek Length: .5 miles Overview: This family-friendly sound-side nature walk lets visitors observe where Hoop Pole Creek meets Bogue Sound, mixing salt water with fresh water. View a variety of plants, shrubs and grasses as well abundant wildlife, egrets, ibis, herons, deer, turtle, red fox and more. A trail guide that corresponds with trail markers can be found at the NC Coastal Federation website. Directions: The trailhead is located next to the Atlantic Station Shopping Center, mile marker 3.5 on Hwy 58 in Atlantic Beach. Patsy Pond Length: 3 trails ranging from .75 to 1.9 miles Overview: With three clearly marked trails (.75, 1 and 1.9 miles), the Patsy Pond Nature Trail is great for family outings or avid hikers and provides a great introduction to North Carolina’s long leaf pine. Visitors may get a glimpse at the red-cockaded woodpecker that makes his home in the long leaf pines about 20-50 feet above the ground. There is also an array of additional wildlife and vegetation to spot along the way as well as a few sink holes and ponds. A trail guide that corresponds with trail markers can be found at the NC Coastal Federation website. Directions: The trail head is located directly across Hwy 24 from the NC Coastal Federation office in the small community of Ocean. Cedar Point Tideland Trail Length: 1.3 miles Overview: Catch beautiful views of the White Oak

38 JULY - AUGUST 2021

River and a distant glimpse of the town of Swansboro on this easy loop trail. Visitors will find a hardwood and pine forest with a variety of wading birds, osprey and ducks waiting in the nearby waters. Directions: From Morehead City, take Hwy 24 to Cape Carteret and turn right on Hwy 58. About a mile down, turn left onto VFW Road. A trail head parking lot is located near the Cedar Point Campground. Emerald Isle Woods Trail Length: 1.1 miles Overview: This well-maintained trail is part of Emerald Isle Woods Park, a 41-acre recreational area off of Coast Guard Road in Emerald Isle. Expect beautiful views of Bogue Sound and the high-rise bridge and the chance to see deer, egrets, shore birds and woodpeckers. Additional amenities include disc golf, a floating dock, picnic pavilion and a floating dock. Directions: From Morehead City, take Hwy 24 to Hwy 58, turning left to cross the B. Cameron Langston Bridge. At the first light, turn right onto Coast Guard Road, turning right just before reaching Deer Horn Dunes. Neusiok Trail Length: 22 miles Overview: The crown jewel of Carteret County’s hiking options and a testament to the hard work of the many volunteers who have participated in its maintenance, the Neusiok Trail winds more than 20 miles through sandy beaches, hardwood forests, cypress swamps, bogs and long leaf pine savannahs. The Neusiok, named after a tribe of Native Americans who made their home in the area, provides views of the Neuse and Newport rivers and has three shelters along its route. The easy to moderately difficult trail is home to a variety of wildlife and plants, including the elusive Venus flytrap. The site is part of the almost 1,000-mile long Mountains-to-Sea Trail which meanders from the Tennessee border to the ocean. Directions: The north end of the trail is located at the Pine Cliff Picnic Area just off of Hwy 101. From Beaufort, turn right on Hwy 306 and follow along 3.3 miles to Forest Road 132. Turn left and go 1.7 miles to the picnic area. The south terminus is at Oyster Point, between Beaufort and Newport. Leaving Beaufort on

Hwy 101, turn left on Old Winberry Road and right on Mill Creek Road. Oyster Point is on the left. There are several access points for the Neusiok Trail making it easy to break it up into small day hikes and several downloadable guides to help you chart your course. Weetock Trail Length: 11 miles Overview: Located in the western end of the Croatan National Forest, the Weetock Trail is a favorite spot for bird watchers. In addition, a variety of rare plant species can be seen in the area, including locally-rare orchids. Moderately easy, the trail can get a bit wet at times, so hikers should be prepared if hiking after a rainy stretch. Primitive camping, a boat ramp and restrooms are available at the trail head at Haywood Landing. Directions: From Morehead City, head south on Hwy 24, turning right on Hwy 58 in Cape Carteret. Travel 10 miles to Long Point Road and turn left. The trail begins at the intersection with Loopy Road. The other end of the trail is located on Hwy 58 across from Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Willow Pond Length: .1 mile to .8 mile Overview: This collection of four short trails weave

through the natural area surrounding the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Harkers Island. Take a short walk around Patsy Pond or follow the Soundside Loop up the shoreline. A great spot for bird watching, the trail offers remarkable views of wetlands and maritime woodlands. Directions: The museum is located at the end of Island Road on Harkers Island. Follow Hwy 70 east through Down East Carteret County. Make a right on Harkers Island Road in Otway and follow it to the end. The museum is on the left hand side. Elliott Coues’ Trail Length: 3.2 miles Overview: This new addition to Fort Macon State Park, Atlantic Beach, loops through the maritime forest, marsh and sand dunes that abut the park. The moderate trail can be accessed through the fort’s beach access location or through the main parking area at the fort. It is accompanied by Yarrow’s Loop, a quarter-mile nature trail that offers information about the region’s common plants and animals. Directions: Fort Macon is located at 2303 E. Fort Macon Road in Atlantic Beach. From Morehead City, cross the bridge to Atlantic Beach and turn left on Hwy 58/ Fort Macon Road. The fort can be found at the end of the road.

Sites to See There’s more to living at the beach than dips in the oceans and offshore fishing. OK, so those things are really great. But there are loads of options in Eastern North Carolina when you get tired of feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes. Surrounded by museums, aquariums, historic sites and landmarks, there is so much to do beyond the beach that we could keep you busy every weekend for a year.

BEAUFORT HISTORIC SITE

The trials and tribulations of North Carolina’s third oldest town are preserved and remembered through the nearly 60-year-old Beaufort Historical Association and its accompanying site. Golf enthusiasts rave about how Eastern North Carolina suits them to a tee as soon as they discover the terrific and unique courses of the Crystal Coast. Most courses take full advantage of the area’s natural beauty and are built around maritime forests or near the water. When your eye’s not on the ball or focused on the hole, the Crystal Coast’s courses and their natural surroundings are sights to be seen. Spring and fall are considered two of the favorite times for golfing in the area with sunny days and cooler temps, but golfing is truly a year-round attraction in Eastern North Carolina as our terrific climate allows for play almost any time. Most courses feature clubhouses, resident pros, well-equipped pro shops and are open to the public at great rates. All you have to do is call for a tee time. And if you’re a Crystal Coast resident and golfer, ask about the courses’ benefit tournaments held throughout the year. The community is always looking for teams and individuals for tournament play to benefit local organizations.
