54 and 55 Division merge is underway By Josh Sherman Ahead of the planned amalgamation at a new as-yet-unbuilt station at the TTC garage at 1627 Danforth Ave., the Toronto Police Service is already taking steps to merge 54 and 55 Divisions. At a media briefing earlier this month, 55 Division’s acting inspector Warren Wilson and superintendent Reuben Stroble explained measures being taken to meet three broader, citywide objectives for the police service. “The three things that we’re focusing on are to be where the public needs the service the most… embracing community partnerships and creating those partnerships, and focusing on the complex needs of a large city being Toronto,” said Stroble, who noted com-
munity safety was a priority, from his office at 101 Coxwell Ave. Amalgamating 55 and 54 Divisions under a new roof at Coxwell and Danforth Avenues is part of this initiative, and although the new station is years from completion, the two divisions are joining forces in a number of ways. Beginning June 11, 54 Division’s primary response officers, who respond to emergency calls, will be operating out of 55 Division. “Because 54 Division is now more or less a hub to this main building, we don’t need to staff it 24/7 like a regular police station,” Stroble told reporters. “That’s no longer going to be an operational police facility in its common sense.” Continued on Page 3

During an afteroon briefing at 55 Division (101 Coxwell Ave.) on May 15, superintendent Reuben Stroble (above) announced that 54 Division (41 Cranfield Rd.) will be closing nightly at 10 p.m. starting June 12 as the Toronto Police Service works towards amalgamating the two divisions under one roof.
Douglas Crosbie, 54, remembered as ‘vibrant’ father of 2 By Josh Sherman

Above, Douglas Crosbie in an undated photo taken in the Beach.
LOCAL RESIDENT Christine Crosbie wants her late husband, Douglas, remembered for his helpful nature, active role in the community, and dedication to his family. These are some of the qualities she recalled following Douglas’ death on May 16, when he was involved in a collision with a truck at Jones Avenue and Dundas Street East while bicycling to work. He was 54. “He was a very vibrant guy. He was active in a lot of different things,” Christine, 52, said. “He was just happy.” For the past 10 years, Douglas worked at downtown-based Cineflix producing Mayday, a docuseries about plane crashes, but he also found the time to be involved
in the community. Douglas coached their son Davis’ house league hockey team at Ted Reeve Arena and would be the first to give someone a hand with work around the house or moving, Christine remembered. “He actually took action and was helpful and meaningful in our many communities that we belong to,” she said. Christine noted the outpouring of support her family has received, including a call from Mayor John Tory. “Through the visitation and funeral I realize he had far more friends than even I know,” she said. “I don’t think he had any idea that so many people cared that much about him.” Christine estimates about 350
people signed the guest book at Douglas’ funeral, which took place on Wednesday, May 23. Local councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon started off the second day of city council last week with a moment of silence in Douglas’ honour. “Our children, Davis and Marina Crosbie, went to Malvern, and they had a huge outpouring of support and affection from their former classmates who they’re still in touch with,” Christine continued. The couple lived in Ward 32’s Upper Beach neighbourhood for the past seven years having moved here from Riverdale. They met nearly 28 years ago in Montreal while studying journalism, and it didn’t take long for the relationship to get serious. “We had some of the same class-
es together, and we met and went on a couple of dates, and then we were inseparable, literally,” said Christine, who works in communications at OCAD. Douglas and Christine dated for another six months before moving in together. Three years later, they were married. On June 5, they would have been celebrating 25 years of marriage. Christine says that the city needs to take steps to protect cyclists like Douglas. “I don’t know what the answer is, but something has to be done,” she said. “Definitely they can be doing more, even simple things like making bike paths clearer and reminding drivers that when they’re turning right, they need to look everywhere.”

THE MARTIN Goodman Trail’s “missing link” is about to be connected. On May 12, Mayor John Tory and Ward 30 Coun. Paula Fletcher announced the city’s plans to begin work this summer to extend the trail north of Tommy Thompson Park between Outer Harbour Marina Road to Leslie Street. A city spokesperson confirmed the new link is 740 metres long and is estimated to cost $820,000, excluding taxes. “The Unwin Avenue section of the Martin Goodman Trail will fill in a missing link to complete a 20 km trail along Toronto’s waterfront from the western (Humber Bay Bridge) to the eastern beaches (Kew/Balmy Beach),” said Cheryl San Juan, who works in strategic communications for the city. Without the link, cyclists and pedestrians wishing to travel between the two points directly have had to use Ulster Street, which the new completely separated connection, expected to be completed in November, will run along the south side of.
PHOTO: GOOGLE STREETVIEW
The city plans to build a long-unfinished part of the Martin Goodman Trail, above. “Once the missing link is completed, it will move trail users off a dangerous road full of large trucks and onto a beautiful and safe passage from Leslie Street to the Cherry Street beaches area,” said Fletcher in a statement. The mayor also noted the safety benefits of the link for pedestrians and cyclists. “The Martin Goodman Trail connects people to vibrant neighbourhoods and parks along our city’s waterfront. This construction will complete the trail giving pedestrians
and cyclists a safe option to access our waterfront,” said Mayor Tory in a statement. A city news release suggested there were also ecological concerns considered when the linking route was being plotted. Asked for specifics, San Juan noted staff avoided interfering with mature cottonwood trees when possible, and surveys will be conducted before construction is done to make sure migratory bird breeding isn’t impacted. In addition, the trail will
feature a barrier fence due to the fact that Tommy Thompson Park is dog free and to discourage trail users from making their own paths in the area. Passageways will be incorporated to let wildlife travel in and out of the park. “Disturbed areas will be restored following sustainable and natural landscape principles and best practice,” according to San Juan. “Habitat opportunities will be enhanced where possible,” San Juan added. A resting area is also planned.

The Ontario Cannabis Store did not provide an opening date. THE EAST Beach Community Association is hosting on Wednesday, May 30, a town hall with provincial candidates for the Scarborough Southwest riding. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Birchmount Community Centre (93 Birchmount Rd.)’s Birchcliff Room. SPRING IS in full bloom, and so are the east end’s many farmers’ markets. Nominations for the 2018 Beach Citizen of the Year now open By Beach Metro News Staff
DO YOU know someone who deserves recognition for their work in our community? Nominations are now open for the next Beach Citizen of the Year. Founded by Community Centre 55, the Beaches Lions Club and Beach Metro News, this annual event began in 2001 and includes judges from each of these local organizations and all past citizens. Judges look for nominees involved in a wide range of volunteer activities, benefiting the community. We’re looking for people who have the following experience:
• worked hard to improve life for others in the Beach community. • have made an impact on a broad spectrum of community members. • made a tangible contribution over a long period of time and inspired others to participate more in community life. The annual award honours someone who has shown a long-standing commitment to improving our community. Nominate someone you know, or update a previous nomination and resubmit it with the latest details. Don’t delay. Nomination forms must be received at Centre 55 by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17.
Founded in 2008 by the Danforth East Community Association (DECA), this market runs Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting June 7. Find fresh local fruit, vegetables, meats, dairy products and more. Visit Facebook.com/EastLynnParkFarmersMarket for more information.
The Leslieville market takes place Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jonathan Ashbridge Park. Attendees can expect to see veggies, baked goods, ethically raised meat, and prepared food, as well as live bands, a kids program, demo, and community garden. Check Leslievillemarket.com to learn more.
Past citizens are Jason Balgopal, Gene Domagala, Glenn Cochrane, Ted Randall, Marie Perrotta, Arie Nerman, David Breech, Mary Christie, Joan Brent, Jean Cochrane, Pat Silver, Anne Butler, Thomas Neal, Suzanne Beard, Carole Stimmell, Paul Babich and John Ellis. The nomination form is available at www.centre55.com/community_programs/citizen-of-the-year/ or call 416691-1113 for more information on how to nominate someone. The winner will be announced in Beach Metro News, and honoured with a ceremony at the Millennium Garden in September.
East York Farmers’ Market This east-end market dates back to 1999. It sets up at East York Civic Centre on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Offerings include fruits and vegetables, honey and preserves, smoked meats and cheeses, fresh baking, homemade soaps and lotions, and freshly made smoothies. More details can be found at Farmersmarketsontario.com.
Market 55 A relative newcomer to the local farmers’ market scene, Market 55 is based out of Community Centre 55 at 97 Main St. in the Upper Beach. It features classic market staples such as eggs, cheese, baked goods, meats, honey, prepared foods, and specialty items. This market runs all year and moves outdoors during the warmer months.
Amalgamation brings policing changes, efficiencies Continued from Page 1 As a result, the same day 54 Division’s primary response officers move into 55 Division, their former station will begin closing around 10 p.m. each night. If someone arrives at the station needing the system, there will be a phone set up that they can use to reach police. “They’ll still have access to the police, just not a physical person at that time,” he said. “Depending on the need, we can have a police car there right away, or we’ll provide direction,” Stroble continued. Wilson said that police would be monitoring and evaluating the situation. “We think this is actually going to provide better service,” he added. That’s because the number of responders available during
peak hours will increase, Stroble suggested, as 55 Division will be able to reduce management roles
“” “Bringing two facilities together there’s a lot of efficiencies …”

on site. “Bringing two facilities together, there’s a lot of efficiencies built into that,” said Stroble. “The
actual availability of officers is going to be a little bit higher.” As well, TPS expects response times will be improved with more responders at 55 Division. “The way we’re going to be dispatching cars in June, it’s the closest car,” Wilson explained. Previously, 55 and 54 Division officers in cars were limited to responding to calls in their respective catchment areas. Using a GPS system, dispatchers see which active car is closest to an incident and can assign its officer to respond without the previous Division-based limitation. This is the latest phase of the 54 and 55 Division amalgamation. Since January of last year, 54 Division’s criminal investigation bureau was brought under 55 Division. “That was the first phase of what we did,” Wilson explained.

SEVERAL STREETCAR stops in the Beach area, including ones along Gerrard Street East, Kingston Road, and Queen Street East, have been relocated as part of the TTC’s regular review process. In an email, TTC spokesperson Stuart Green confirmed the changes took place over the weekend of Saturday, May 12. He said that the transit commission reviews the location of stops “all the time” in an effort to maintain reliable and predictable street service. “Our standard is that stops be in the range of 300–400 metres apart. That allows for good flow while being convenient for customers,” he explained in the email. Most of the changes occurred on Queen Street East.

The TTC created a new westbound stop at Beach Avenue, switched the eastbound stop at MacLean to the Glen Manor Drive signals, relocated the westbound Spruce Hill Road stop to the Beech Avenue signals, and nixed the eastbound Scarborough Beach Boulevard stop in favour of one at Glen Manor Drive. Also on Queen Street East, the TTC said via a notice on its website that “the eastbound and westbound stops at both Lee Avenue and Waverley Road will be removed and consolidated to a new eastbound and westbound stop at Bellefair Avenue, given the close proximity of adjacent stops and availability of crossing protection.” The Queen Street East eastbound stop at Kippendavie got replaced with one at the Elmer Avenue signal, while the eastbound Laing Street stop has been pushed to west of the pedestrian crosswalk at Alton Avenue. Rounding out the Queen Street changes, eastbound stops at Connaught and Woodward Avenues and westbound stops at Kent Road and Connaught have been reduced to stops both ways at the Woodfield Road crosswalk. On Gerrard Street, the TTC has moved the westbound Highfield Road Stop to the pedestrian crosswalk at Woodfield Road. The westbound Kingston Road stop that was to the west of Woodbine Avenue has been moved east of the avenue. The TTC also combined the two westbound stops at Malvern Avenue and Walter Street, respectively, into a new one at the Glen Manor Drive signal. Ahead of the changes, the TTC said transit staff met with Ward 32 Coun. Mary-Margaret McMahon’s office. Notices were placed on poles to inform transit riders of the forthcoming changes three weeks before they were made. However, there was a delay in giving notice online, and it was related to the retirement of a TTC employee, Green explained. “We have identified and corrected a gap with respect to notification that should have been on our website and communicated to our customers,” said Green in the statement. “We apologize for that oversight and are making sure it doesn’t happen again in September when we post another group of stop changes,” he added.

In convinced me that in 2018 we are the case of the car-share parking long overdue for a wholesale purge concept, the Toronto proposal was of a large number of members on only to conduct an 18 month pilot Toronto city council. Specifically, it program. is time to replace any incumbents Laneway homes have been who are running again in the Dan- allowed in Vancouver for over a forth and Beaches wards east of the decade. They are easy to permit DVP. and build under “as of right” zonWithin the last few weeks, Toroning and have resulted in over 3,000 to city council has considered two brand new low density apartments simple civic innovation items that being built in existing transit-served should have been easy for council to neighbourhoods since 2009. Other
Canadian cities like Victoria and Ottawa have even gone further, allowing their residents to build new garden suites or coach house apartments on their properties. Those units are not restricted to properties with just laneway access. Toronto and East York councillors should have embraced at least the Vancouver model for laneway homes. Instead, legacy councillors fretted about parking access and privacy concerns for residents who mostly live within one kilometre of existing streetcar and subway services. As with earlier city hall blunders, like food trucks and restaurant size restrictions along sections of Queen Street East, too
many members of Toronto city council insisted on layering on more restrictions and then sent the laneway housing file back to staff for even more changes. The proposed free-floating, car-share parking pilot would have allowed local residents using services like Car2Go the option to pick up and drop off those vehicles on residential streets near their homes. As always, this proposal was “restricted to death” through the tinkering of our local councillors––and now Car2Go has decided to leave Toronto on May 31. It will be relocating its car share vehicles to Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary where residential street parking
has been permitted for years. Toronto claims that it wants to be an innovative “world-class” city, that can compete with its global peers, but whenever presented with opportunities to follow existing models for services that have proven to work well in other cities, our current councillors’ responses are too often reduced to a ‘what is the least we can do at the last possible moment?’ default. Recently departed Toronto city manager, Peter Wallace, described Toronto City Hall as a place with a “slavish devotion to the status quo.” Given recent events, it is hard for me to disagree.

Letters to the Editor
Our main street is dying, and it’s breaking my heart LET ME begin by saying I love living in the Beach. My wife and I have raised our family in the Beach for 18 years (with a job transfer in between) and are on now to helping the third generation get established here. Yes, it has a small town feel on the doorstep of downtown Toronto. You need to walk around here with your head held up high because you are not anonymous, you are part of the community be it through schools, sports, gym or other social interaction. I am a regular paddler on the lake and I ride to work on my bike to one of the towers downtown. I pinch myself sometimes thinking how fortunate I am. However, the article from the Archives of June 4, 2002 showing that Queen East was ranked as
the best main street in Ontario feels like rubbing salt in a wound. How far have we fallen in the intervening 16 years? Every week it seems another merchant vacates their premises. Rents are sky high. One city block south of Queen the fish don’t take much of a role as consumers. Is this part of the problem? Our main street is dying. I am not a merchant so I don’t know all of the ins and outs of the issues. When we lived here in the ’90s there weren’t any vacant stores to my recollection. I continue to try to patronize locally as much a possible. I am told the zoning is part of the problem restricting the size of establishments. I do not know the full extent of the problem nor the
solutions and assume the Beach Improvement Association is fighting the good fight but it just seems to be getting worse. I would love it if a strong strategy was developed to deal with this malaise. Our small town is suffering. It breaks my heart. I am tired of witnessing this demise. I know it’s not normally Beach Metro New’s role to probe and provoke on this sort of a subject but I would certainly appreciate it if some more light could be shed on this subject.

NOISY PLANES? IT SEEMS that Pearson Airport has decided that we don’t have enough noise, pollution, or air
traffic here in the Beach! They have decided to reroute the air traffic to spread it out to other neighbourhoods. As we already get the air traffic from Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, the pollution from industry and Portlands Energy Centre (power plant), it hardly seems NIMBY to say that this decision will further stress the health of our area. People may have noticed that some of the loud flights are also in the middle of the night. If you notice loud, frequent, or low planes from Pearson, you can file a noise complaint at: https://www.torontopearson. com/en/noisecomplaint/# Gwen Fogel
FROM THE WEB Great reading all the memories in your article (“A walk through the storied past of Lee Avenue”, April 17, 2018) My sister and myself now live in Kingston. The Beach was so homey, we went to Norway Public school and then Malvern CI. Grew up on the Boardwalk, learned tennis at the courts. My sister stayed in the Beach running an antique store on Queen. Unfortunately the atmosphere changed and the whole area became too expensive. We come home occasionally to walk the boardwalk. I still have my old Once a Beacher t-shirt. I see the spirit still lives. Brenda Nelson

AFTER 35 years, The Big Carrot, the community-centric, sustainable, and healthconscious food store, has decided to expand and open a second location at Southwood Drive (Main Street) and Kingston Road in the Beach community. The worker-owned store prioritizes organic, non-GMO, local, and fair trade in all its purchasing practices. Its staff takes pride in offering personalized, informative services and ongoing public education through its rigorous standards program. The store is also committed to healthy and sustainable food systems by supporting small local, organic producers whenever possible. John Gousvaris, the new store manager, has 20 years of experience in the retail sector, and says he’s thrilled to be part of a great and caring community. “Expanding our roots in the Beach is fitting because we share the same community values. We look forward to growing together,” said Gousvaris. The first and only store is located on
Danforth Avenue. The second store, which is expected to open in a few weeks, will be 6,000 square feet and will offer the same experience as the Danforth location, with fresh “grab n go”, an organic smoothie/ coffee bar, and a smaller selection of grocery, personal care and dispensary items. There will be 19 customer-only parking spots available which will be free for 45 minutes in the underground garage. The new location will also prohibit the sale of single use plastic water bottles, two litres and under. The beloved store opening is much anticipated by the community. Its purpose is simple: to create a healthy society by providing the community with an inclusive environment that promotes, together with its staff and customers, truth, integrity and awareness of healthy food and lifestyle choices. The new store will also be displayed in a fresh purple colour instead of the traditional orange as the brand chose to create a new look, as it reflects the exciting new beginnings the store will have in its second location.
Beach kiosk relocating this year THE IPADDLE Adventures trailer that had several residents up in arms about their lake views being blocked last summer will be returning to the Beach, albeit in a different location. Steve Kozlowich, the general manager of the business, says he’s looking forward to opening on June 1 in a new location, between the Balmy Beach Club and Willow Avenue,

beside the Silver Birch boathouse, on the north side of the boardwalk. “We’ll be even closer to the beach this year, and no one’s view is blocked,” he said. With new LED-enhanced paddleboards designed for sunset and sunrise paddling, and a new line of kayaks and tandem kayaks, Kozlowich says they have lots of new toys and a newly renovated trailer.

55 Division’s Const. Cindy Greenlaw reflects on 30 years of service
Summer SPORTS Day
CAMP
July 3 – August 24 • 8:45 am – 4:15 pm
By Josh Sherman
TORONTO POLICE Service Const. Cindy Greenlaw is looking forward to all the free time she’ll have starting this Friday, which will be the first day of her retirement from a job she’s done over the past 30 years. From the office she shares at 55 Division, where she has been a fixture for her entire career (with the exception of three months of training at 52 Division downtown), she spoke longingly about the prospect of being able to have a “very leisurely coffee” at the end of the week. Her time here has been anything but monotonous having worked in several departments, and as she counts down the remaining shifts on a whiteboard behind her, she has mixed emotions about entering the next phase of her life. “That’s bittersweet,” she said of her approaching retirement. There have been some scary moments, like what she described only as “an incident with a hammer” or the time she got a call about a man pointing a gun at traffic. “It was one of those guns that you would use on your Nintendo, but for those few seconds, you’re just like, ‘There’s a gun!’” she recalled.
“”
“Even the worst criminal, if you just sit there and talk to them as a person, there’s something in there that’s redeeming …”
– Const. Cindy Greenlaw
Greenlaw has enjoyed the broad range of experience she gained through the different roles she has taken on. The mathematics of mortgage scams interested her when she was working for the fraud department. Similarly, the calculations required to figure out what, exactly, happened at the scene of a crash captured her imagination while on the traffic beat.

Centre S
Meet your Toronto—D By Beach Metro News Staff
WITH THE 2018 Ontario general election coming up on June 7, Beach Metro News reached out to the candidates from the four top parties vying to win the Toronto—Danforth riding this year. We asked them to outline what the biggest issues facing the riding and province are and what they, if elected, would do to solve them.
PATRICIA KALLIGOSFYRIS
H
LI KOO
P
ello Toronto–Danforth residents. For those of you that I haven’t had a chance to meet, I’ll tell you a bit about myself. I’m a high school teacher, social activist, and a hard-working Ontario resident. I am representing the PC party because I believe they promote the most logical and responsible path forward for the future. Being a candidate is tough. It’s not easy canvassing, hammering signs, or running events, but I am motivated by the belief that we need a change in the province to guarantee a better future. As you’ve probably noticed from my last name, I, like so many Ontario residents, am the product of immigrant ancestors who came to Canada for a better future. My grandparents immigrated to Canada from Greece, and their stories about poverty and struggle have shaped who I am today. It’s tough to make economic policy sound exciting, but it’s very important to our lives. Take Greece for example. For years they accumulated debt faster than their economy grew. Life was great until the debt came due and then calamity ensued, and now the Greek people have struggled for the better part of a decade. Now you might say Greece is an extreme example and I would agree with you. Ontario’s economy is not going to be crushed by its
olitical leadership matters. The people who represent us and the lived experiences of people who represent us matter. The people at the decision making table matter. It’s time for change. It’s time for representation from voices that are not heard enough. I live in Pape Village just north of the Danforth. We’ve probably seen each other, maybe at one of our many great coffee shops or restaurants throughout the riding. Maybe we’ve passed each other on the bike trails along the Don River or it’s possible my 3 ½ year old daughter is in the same daycare or swimming class with one of your children or relatives. If not, we’ve likely shared some of our many green spaces together at the same time, either at a Fun Fair, a Farmers’ Market or just relaxing in the summer. I’m running to be your MPP because this is my home and I believe we need a strong, local voice at Queen’s Park. My experiences, built in our community, mean that I am ready to be your new voice. I’m a parent. I understand the frustration of finding a daycare spot; the irrational euphoria associated with learning you have a spot and the cost pressures of affording that spot. Our plan to build 100,000 new child care spaces and to extend free daycare to preschool age children will make a real difference for parents throughout this riding. As a professor at George Brown College, I believe strongly in a safe and inclusive education system. My parents arrived in Canada with $8 in their pockets, but
debt load this year, or the next. We are, however, on a dangerous path. Since the Liberal government came to office in 2003, Ontario debt has increased by over 5 per cent per year while our economy has grown by half that rate. Now I don’t have a Ph.D. in economics, but I know that if you’re spending more than you’re taking in your debt load will increase. We need to be responsible. Ontario’s population is aging, and we have a responsibility to provide services to those in need. I believe in a robust social safety net and, to keep these systems operating smoothly, we need to be fiscally responsible. We don’t want to go back to the days when 15 cents on the dollar were paying off bank interest instead of funding schools and hospitals. Canada, and Ontario, is a great place to live because of the opportunities and security we provide our residents. To provide opportunity and security, we must be responsible. If we’re not responsible than taxes go up, businesses leave, and our great province is put in a tough position. We have time to reverse inefficient policies and secure our future. That’s why I’m running with the PC party, and that’s why I hope you’ll support us at the upcoming election. If you’d like to hear more about our campaign or locate my contact details please visit www.kalligosfyris.ca.
I was able to go to school. I was the first person in my family to go to university, and to get a Master’s degree. I will always advocate for improved education facilities and the highest standard of schools and schooling in the world. My background as an advocate for social justice and affordable housing helps me comprehend the important impact that the Liberal expansion of rent control has on ensuring renters will continue to be able to live in their homes. Even so, I know that many full-time workers are struggling to pay for food, rent and basics like diapers. A $15 an hour minimum wage will help many Ontarians not have to make a decision between these competing priorities. I’m a former public servant. I know I can use my experiences, your ideas, and our common needs and navigate government to get things done for Toronto-Danforth. Most of all, I’m a consensus builder. I know that by working together, with a shared purpose, we can make a real difference for our community. It’s time for more women in politics. It’s time for our legislature to look like our subway trains and like the kids in our schools. It’s time for kids to grow up seeing themselves represented at top levels of government. I want to be part of that change, and I want to be your voice. I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail. Drop by my Volunteer Hub at 1092 Danforth or get in touch with me at www.likoo.ca.

ANDY TROTTER
I
ver the time I’ve served you as your Member of Provincial Parliament, you’ve seen me at your doorstep, on your street, at a celebration, or in your corner store or coffee shop. You’ve watched me fight for what matters to you. Sometimes it’s issues like overcrowded public transit, high hydro bills, climate change, quality child care, or better health services. You’ve watched me help you or your neighbour with a problem, such as getting access to a needed service. Or perhaps I’ve been able to help your community group cut through red tape to get their needed funding. This last year, I’ve been working with Toronto–Danforth tenants. As a result, I was able to force the government to close the loophole that excluded new buildings, like condos, from rent control. And it was Toronto–Danforth parents who brought me the idea for Jonathan’s Law, which now makes sure parents who lose a child can get leave without losing their jobs. It was thoughtful advice from members of the gay community in Toronto–Danforth that helped me ensure all students now have legal protection to use the title Gay-Straight Alliance in their schools. At a recent all-candidate meeting with Grade 4–6 students, I was asked why I chose the NDP. Because, I told them, the NDP became my allies when I was fighting to prevent the building of an incinerator
’ve been interested in politics for my entire life. But the Green Party inspired me to run this year because it offers solutions to so many of the challenges that my family and I are facing today. Through my small business in architectural design, I’ve worked with a lot of municipal and provincial agencies in planning, transportation and conservation, and I understand what it takes to create communities that are accessible and sustainable. Too many of us have to rely on our cars to get us to where we need to go. We’d love to drive less, but it’s just not practical. So we’re stuck in endless gridlock just to go about our everyday business. But the GPO has a plan to create communities that are safe, comfortable and efficient to move around in, even without a car. We would put tolls on the DVP and Gardiner, establish a Complete Streets Act, support operational funding to the TTC, and dedicate one per cent of the transportation budget each year to cycling and transit infrastructure. We need to work with the city to move the Downtown Relief Line forward. I understand the challenges that small business owners face on every level. Not everyone can wait for a corporate tax cut to help support the rising costs of business. That’s why the Green Party would increase the exemption level for the Employer Health Tax from $450,000 to $1 million for small businesses. We would pay for this by reversing the Liberal’s corporate tax cut for big businesses by one per cent. The Green Party is the only party speaking the truth about energy costs. One reason we are paying so much
that would dump toxic smoke out into the neighbourhood. I’ve always fought to keep communities safe from toxins and protect our future from the effects of climate change. I’ve been an adviser to Jack Layton on climate change, a Toronto councillor and the executive director of Greenpeace Canada. I’ve also done government relations for the Ontario Nurses Association and chaired Toronto’s Board of Health. Since the people in Toronto–Danforth first elected me in 2006, I’ve been the NDP critic for education and now for energy and for environment and climate change issues. I’ve sat on more committees and sponsored more motions and private member’s bills than I care to count. During this campaign I find people are feeling cynical about Ontario politics. After 15 years of Liberal government, families are feeling squeezed, services have been cut and people are working harder but not getting ahead. And Doug Ford’s Conservatives promise to make things worse. We don’t need to choose between bad and worse. We can choose better. Let’s make drug and dental coverage a reality for everyone. Let’s tackle climate change. Let’s make high-quality, not-forprofit child care affordable for every family. Let’s keep hydro public and its bills fair. Let’s invest in transit and affordable housing. We can have a government that actually solves problems.
every month is because decades of underinvestment in our system have led us to a huge repair backlog. The Liberals have been too afraid to make the tough decisions to keep our system working. Another reason is because we’re using energy so inefficiently across the system. Other jurisdictions like ours achieve the same productivity with much less energy, because they generate it more efficiently and sustainably, and they use it more efficiently. But the main reason it’s so expensive is because we are spending unbelievable amounts every year maintaining our nuclear energy plants. They’re outdated, obsolete, and massively expensive to maintain. We don’t even need them! The GPO has a plan to take advantage of cutting-edge technology to transition our system away from crumbling nuclear plants. Instead, we can generate electricity from clean, renewable sources, and use smartgrid technology to make sure that we get the most out of it. As a bonus, this renewable energy economy will save money and create jobs. Affordable housing is an important issue to so many of us in Toronto–Danforth, especially with the explosion of buildings going up in some of our communities. The GPO would require all new developments to have a minimum of 20 per cent affordable homes. This would make the dream of home ownership accessible to more of us, who could stay in our community instead of moving to somewhere more affordable.

Instrumental duo LUCA, named for the Darwinian term “last universal common ancestor,” are donating the proceeds from the sales of their recently released I EP towards mental health initiatives.
"Important choices made easy." By Josh Sherman
BEACHER MATT Campbell and longtime musical collaborator Jim Perrott of Oshawa would sometimes talk about anxieties and mental health issues before playing shows together in various bands. These conversations were the inspiration for their latest project, LUCA, who released their first record, I EP, early this spring and are donating all proceeds from streaming and downloads to mental health organizations. “The main goal for us right now is to kind of just use our music, our skills, to… heal,” said Campbell. “That’s what it does for us,” he added. Donating royalties to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health as well as the Canadian Mental Health Association are just another of the project’s ties to the cause. The music itself on the extended-play release is one more connection, as it is meant to play as an aural interpretation of struggling with mental health issues.
“We kind of designed the whole thing to be a translation of our own personal experience of dealing with mental health,” Campbell explained. “Each track was kind of its own episode or stage of dealing with it (mental health issues).”
The May 18, 2017, death by suicide of Chris Cornell, the late lead singer of bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, was “a big catalyst” for LUCA’s forming, Campbell said speaking on the one year anniversary of it. “We kind of felt like our hands were tied, not being able to really do anything head-on for mental health or being there for other people,” he recalled. The five songs on the EP form a small batch of pitched-
down, instrumental, atmospheric indie rock. Or, as some of Campbell’s coworkers upon hearing the music have described it— “A bunch of them said it gave them Pink Floyd kind of vibes.” Apparently, it has multigenerational appeal. “My grandma’s really happy that this music doesn’t have, like, screaming, because I sent her my previous metal band’s records,” the local musician, who counts soundtracks and Matthew Good as influences, added with a laugh. The songs were recorded over four long days in a Mountain Grove, Ont., studio owned by Jonas Bonnetta of folk group Evening Hymns. The musicians and producer clicked, and Campbell noted “it was a really incredible, inspiring experience.” For now, the release, which dropped March 28, can only be downloaded online, but there are loose plans for a future run of cassette tapes. “I think vinyl’s too expensive for us right now, but maybe in the future,” he added.
Both musicians haven’t quit their days jobs—Campbell is continuing his healthcare-related work with the Ontario Health Study—but they are hoping to make time to record another record in Mountain Grove this August. You can listen to the I EP album at lastuniversalcommonancestor.bandcamp. com/album/i-ep.

L
ocal asparagus, a member of the lily family, is at its delicious best now! Versatile asparagus is at home as an appetizer, a main course or as a salad. It can be enjoyed hot or cold and lends itself to a variety of classic sauces such as: bearnaise, hollandaise and aioli, which complement its unique taste. Asparagus can be prepared simply: break off the tough ends, rinse thoroughly in cold water and plunge into boiling for two minutes until tender crisp; drain and serve with a squeeze of lemon, melted butter, sea salt and fresh black pepper. However, it also lends itself to more elaborate dishes such as quiche or crepes. It is the one vegetable which is perfectly correct to pick up, dip it into a sauce and eat with your fingers.
A few tips for preparation · Choose bright green asparagus with tightly closed, purplish tips. The thickness of the stalk does not tell the freshness but the closed tips indicate just picked quality. · Asparagus is best bought and served the same day. However, it can be refrigerated up to three days if kept in a tall container (plastic yogurt container) with water in the bottom and a plastic bag over the tips to help keep it hydrated. · Because asparagus is grown in sandy soil, wash in several changes of cold water to remove any grit. · After washing asparagus, break off tough stems and discard. The bottom of the stems may be peeled with a vegetable peeler to make them more palatable before cooking. ·Do not overcook asparagus. It requires about two minutes of cooking in rapidly boiling water, then should be drained immediately. If going to be served cold, plunge into ice cold water to stop the cooking process. Pat dry with a tea towel; wrap in tea towel and refrigerate until ready to use. Dressings should be drizzled over at the last minute to prevent the asparagus from losing its vibrant green colour.
Spring Greens, New Potatoes and Asparagus Salad This is one of my favourite asparagus recipes from my cookbook, The Lactose Family Cookbook. It is yummy served with barbecued salmon but it is equally tasty with any fish or meat. Be sure to choose asparagus with closely closed tips for maximum freshness. If using fiddleheads, wash in several changes of water to ensure crevices have been cleaned of debris. 12 small new potatoes, scrubbed 1 lb (500 g) fresh asparagus 8 oz (250 g) fiddleheads or substitute more asparagus 12 cups (3 L) assorted field greens
Herbal vinaigrette 1/4 cup (50 mL) white wine vinegar 1/4 cup (50 mL) each water, vegetable oil, and extra virgin olive oil 1 clove, garlic, minced 2 tsp (10 mL) finely chopped fresh tarragon 2 tsp (10 mL) Dijon mustard 1 tsp (5 mL) each, salt and granulated sugar 1/4 tsp (1 mL) fresh black pepper In steamer over simmering water, steam potatoes until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain well. Meanwhile, in large pot of boiling water, cook asparagus and fiddleheads until tender-crisp, two to three minutes. Drain and refresh under cold water. Cut asparagus into two-inch (10 cm) pieces. Herbal Vinaigrette: In food processor or mixing bowl using whisk, combine vinegar, water, vegetable and olive oils, garlic, salt, tarragon mustard and pepper until smooth. In large bowl, toss together greens, asparagus, fiddleheads and potatoes with enough dressing to coat. Any remaining dressing will keep covered and refrigerated for up to two weeks. Arrange on platter or individual plates. Serve immediately. Makes six servings.
Roasted Asparagus with Dill Butter Roasting is another technique for cooking asparagus which intensifies its delicate flavour. Dill and tarragon are both naturally good taste accompaniments as is a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Be sure to choose stems of equal thickness to ensure that asparagus cooks evenly. 1.5 lbs (375 g) asparagus with tough ends removed 2 tbsp (25 mL) fresh chopped dill or fresh tarragon Generous squeeze of fresh lemon juice Preheat oven to 400F (200C). Arrange asparagus in single layer on parchment-lined baking sheet. In a saucepan melt butter and herb together; drizzle evenly over asparagus. Bake in oven 15–18 minutes turning halfway through cooking until asparagus is tender. Serve immediately with a drizzle of fresh lemon juice. Makes 4–6 servings.

Lacrosse player pays it forward By Marjan Asadullah

Celebrating our 25th year!
LACROSSE GAVE Lauren Chong excitement and joy not only on the field but off it too, as she says the game gave her “the best experiences” of her life. The 20-year-old recently returned for the summer from Limestone College, a top-ranked D2 college in South Carolina, to continue participating in what she loves to do, play lacrosse and volunteer coaching for the Toronto Beaches Lacrosse Club (TBLC). “It’s my way of paying it forward and giving back to the Beaches,” says Chong. Her love of the game started at age 12 with Toronto Stars House League lacrosse. She progressed through rep play and “travel teams” which gave her the opportunity to play in International tournaments against top level competition. Lacrosse has taken her to Scotland (with Team Ontario), Florida (with Everest Lacrosse) and throughout the U.S. (with Team Ontario, Toronto Stars and Everest Lacrosse).

Lauren Chong returns to her hometown of Toronto to continue her love of the game of lacrosse. She started volunteer coaching with Beaches lacrosse house league in 2012. She has coached U15 and this year will volunteer coach the TBLC. In 2016 she started playing midfield for Limestone College. Recently, Limestone won the Conference Carolinas Championship for the third year in a row and this year advanced to the NCAA quarter-finals. Chong continues to enjoy the game more each year.
Now, she is back home where it all began and wants to use her talent and skills to help guide other players in the Beaches Lacrosse organization about the game and about good sportsmanship. Her inspiration is Dana Dobbie, one of the best women’s lacrosse players of all time. Chong relates to Dobbie as a fellow Canadian who shares a passion for the sport of lacrosse. Chong is currently enrolled in Limestone College
and when she’s not playing lacrosse, she’s focused on her double major in business management and sports management with a minor in coaching. Although Chong has achieved and experienced a lot, she’s hopeful about the future and encourages others in school to find their passion. “I really encourage people to get out there, join clubs, find what you like and practice. It can really change things for you.”

W
hen traveling the world, one pretty quickly becomes familiar with a country’s beloved alcoholic beverage. I’m talking about a beverage that is considered to be its standard, and its most respected and popular drink, bar none. You probably are familiar with many. Here is a small list of the better-known countries’ national drinks. Argentina is best known for Fernet. Originally Italian, this bitter, aromatic spirit produced from herbs and spices is usually enjoyed as a digestif or mixed into coffee drinks. In Brazil, it’s cachaca that is best known. A distilled spirit made from fermented sugarcane juice, it is mostly used in the preparation of tropical drinks and cocktails. How about Canada? No surprises here. It’s Canadian rye whisky, a multi-grain spirit utilizing some rye grain. When in Chile or Peru, the drink of choice has to be pisco. This colourless or yellowish-to-amber coloured brandy, made by distilling fermented grape juice, packs quite a punch. Croatia’s favourite imbibe is rakia or rakija, a collective term for fruit brandy quite popular throughout central and southeast Europe. The hearty Danes swear by akvavit or aquavit. This flavoured, alcoholic spirit has been produced since the 15th century and is a staple of Denmark. When in France, it’s hard to avoid brandy of some sort. Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados and others are very popular. Any trip to Germany would not be complete without sampling schnapps. Several forms exist including distilled fruit brandies, herbal liqueurs, infusions and those made by adding fruit syrups, spices and other flavourings to neutral grain spirits.
When in Greece, sip what the Greeks drink… ouzo, a dry, anise-flavoured aperitif. Unicum is one of the national drinks of Hungary. It’s a herbal liqueur or bitter usually consumed as an aperitif or digestif. What would Italy be without grappa, a fragrant, spirited, acid-based pomace brandy made from the skins and residue of fermentation and often flavoured. Mention Mexico and tequila automatically comes to mind. This distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant has fueled quite a number of wild parties throughout the world. The Netherlands claim to fame, alcoholically speaking, is jenever or Geneva gin, a juniper-flavoured distillate sometimes also called Dutch gin. Portugal makes one of the most famous fortified wines on the planet and it is their national pride. I’m talking about port here. Dry to sweet and even white versions, it’s revered around the globe. Russia and vodka seem to go hand in hand. This feisty spirit made primarily from water and ethanol is distilled from cereal grains or potatoes that have been fermented. Slivovica, a strong, spirit made from plums is what folks in Slovakia favour. Spain would simply not be Spain without sherry. This fortified wine made from white grapes comes in numerous styles. Dry to sweet, it is one of the world’s greatest imbibes. Exotic South Africa showcases a rather interesting national drink called Amarula. This cream liqueur is made with sugar, cream and the fruit of the African marula tree, often referred to as the elephant tree or marriage tree. You can probably guess what the United Kingdom’s national imbibe is. If you said tea, you’re right. However, when it comes to alcohol, it’s gin in England, scotch in Scotland and Welsh whisky in Wales. In the United States, American whisky would be the winner. Distilled from a fermented mash of cereal grain there are several types; bourbon, rye whisky, rye malt whisky, malt whisky, wheat whisky, corn whisky and blended whisky.

n this month’s article I want to give a shout-out to some inspiring ecominded folks who are taking the initiative and putting in lots of volunteer hours into eco projects that are adding many shades of green to east end Toronto. First of all, congratulations to the Friends of Glen Stewart Ravine for a successful Tree for Me campaign! In my March column, about info on sources of seeds and trees, I mentioned that the Friends of Glen Stewart Ravine were hoping to get a Parks and Trees Foundation community grant for free trees. I am happy to say that they were successful in receiving this grant and on May 12 over 100 free trees were handed out to 68 families. This group was very successful in building awareness and very quickly surpassed the 50 tree base. How did they do this? By partnering with Pegasus Foundation and through the support of eager volunteers.

These volunteers did outreach on Tree For Me by conducting presentations, through social media and more. On the day of the giveaway over 20 volunteers (including five scouts) turned up to help distribute the trees. This amazing volunteer support all through the process, not only produced a successful initiative, but it also highlighted the benefit of working

The Friends of Glen Stewart Ravine planted 100 trees for Tree for Me. together on a community project. As Cherie Daly of Friends of the Glen Stewart Ravine put it: “we developed our capacity as a community group and a community, by increasing our network of volunteers and associations. We all benefited by meeting each other, learning new skills and cross-pollinating our interests.” Well said, Cherie! Secondly, congrats to Rain Gardens United for a successful tour! More than 25 other residents braved the weather to learn more about greening up their surroundings. Put on as part of Green Infrastructure Week, the 2018 Rain Garden crawl was guided by Mark Yamaguchi and Ting Wang—all members of Rain Gardens United. Proceeding through Danforth East Village, the tour visited various gardens and locales. During the tour Adam highlighted the benefits of rain and native plant gardens to both nature and the infrastructure of the city. It was inspiring to see the number of homes along the streets that are adding a pollinator-friendly habitat to their front yard lawn, creating what the David Suzuki Foundation likes to call The Butterfly Ways Project, which is a citizen-lead movement that grows highways of habitat for bees and butterflies through neighbourhoods in communities across Canada. There were some specific groupings and mini workshops along the route which were presented by business owners, artists and volunteers. These included: 1. A rain garden and soil remediation guide with Luis from Inka Stone-
works. 2. Energy Retrofits focusing on what good insulation and design can make with Joel from Sustainable T.O., a local environmentally focused architectural firm. 3. Native and Food Tree Planting and selection with Virginie from TreeMobile. TreeMobile just completed a successful spring tree sale. 4. The plans, process and overview of the upcoming TDSB teaching rain garden at RH McGregor Elementary School, presented by inspired residents Selena and Miguel. 5. Outdoor environmental themed rain garden sculptures by artist Ryan Phyper 6. A Permaculture Eco Fair at Kimbourne United Church – which has a permaculture garden on site (volunteers welcome). The Church also had a Pop-Up Sale by Native Plants in Claremont with a great selection of plants. Lastly, the tour visited one of my favourite places, the Riverdale Hub on Gerrard St East. This Hub has a rooftop garden called the Social Gardener Café (such a perfect name for our group), and features a gallery and work spaces, all in support of environmental initiatives. Again, I was inspired by all the green projects in our area, and the volunteers and businesses that are adding to our shades of green. If you would like contact info on any of the above, please let me know and/ or if you have a great green project or event that you would like covered contact me at k_fullerton@sympatico.ca.

Locally Developed creates original music inspired by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Matthews and Maroon 5. By Marjan Asadullah
LOCALLY DEVELOPED, the name of a new band from the Beach, has just released its first album entitled Dime. The members include high school students, Alex Shuell on bass, Colin Lafaury on drums, Jonny Bojin on vocals and keyboard and Max Pilchner on guitar, all 16. All four members of the band have had years of musical training refining their respective instruments. Pilchner is a self-taught guitarist who learned to play from YouTube tutorials and has had piano training; Lafaury on drums, came into the band with 10 years of classical and jazz piano training; Shuell is also self-taught, having played the bass at school for a few years after nine years of piano training; and, Bojin has been singing and playing the piano since childhood. The creation of the band has inspired and motivated them to improve on their instruments. On their official website, the band says they like to combine and blend many styles “to create a new contemporary sound that defies simple explanation with influences from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Matthews and Maroon 5.” Coincidentally, the members all knew each other at some point before forming the band and stepping on stage together for their first official event at The Rockpile in Etobicoke on March 31. The band sold over 70 tickets and left audiences raving. They continuously receive support on social media, with nearly 2000 followers on Instagram and growing, kickstarted by the recent release of their first music video for their first song release, “Dime,” which was directed by Morgan Kobayashi and Ryan Grace. The video has been viewed over 1700+ times in less then three days. The band is currently self-managed; they do everything themselves, from creating original music to managing their social media and promotion as they see music as a career path. Their debut album Dime features 10 original tracks recorded at Revolution Recording studio and it was mastered by João Carvalho Mastering, both in Leslieville. Dime can be found on Spotify, iTunes, and Apple Music.
