BEACHES—EAST YORK has a new Member of Provincial Parliament, and she’s a Beacher. Rima Berns-McGown, who has lived in the area with her family for 25 years, was left speechless by the cheers and applause by her supporters, volunteers and staff who were gathered at the Firkin on Danforth to watch the election results roll in on several big-screen TVs. She was ready to talk to Beach Metro News about her win shortly thereafter, touching on her concerns about housing, healthcare, education, childcare, eldercare, energy and transportation. Although the newly elected

MPP has no previous political experience, she has a long history of working with people, for the people. “I’m really excited. I’ve never done this before, but I’ve certainly had a lifetime of standing up for people and standing up for human rights and people who need change—I’m excited to put ideas into action,” she said. After her win, Berns-McGown says she felt exhilarated and grateful for her team of volunteers and supporters because “it does take a village” to go through an election like this. Continued on Page 3

Outbound Liberal MPP Arthur Potts takes loss in stride By Josh Sherman

AS THE provincial election results flashed across the TV screens at the Beach House Grill on the night of June 7, Beaches—East York MPP Arthur Potts knows he has lost his riding to the NDP’s Rima BernsMcGown. “Listen, I appreciate why people wanted to move to the NDP in order to stop Doug Ford. It didn’t work for them,” he said moments after his riding’s results were broadcast. Potts said he had hoped voters in the riding would have supported him based on his experience, which he said would have helped him try to hold inbound Ontario Premier Doug Ford, whose PC Party has a majority government. “Good luck. It’s unfortunate. I think we did some good stuff,” he said. “The people are never wrong,” Potts continued. Asked what he was most proud of during his time as a provincial politician, Potts mentioned how he introduced five Private Member’s Bills. Earlier this year, he introduced one such bill to lower the

voting age in Ontario elections to 16 from 18. He also brought up his role in helping out the local craft cider, spirits, and beer industries. “Now we’re growing those industries,” he said. sustainable-technology industry before becoming an MPP in June of 2014. “I’ll just move on to another phase of my life, and I’ll be quite happy,” Potts said. Had there been a minority government, which would present the prospect of another election sooner, Potts might have considered running again. But with the PC Party firmly in control with a majority government, Potts has no plans to return to politics, he confirmed. “You never know,” he added. Potts said he was proud to represent the community and wished the NDP’s Berns-McGown “all the best.” Liberal MP Nathaniel ErskineSmith attended Potts electionnight event and lamented the provincial politician’s defeat. “Arthur deserved much better. Arthur was a strong local representative. He delivered for our community in a number of different ways,” he said. Beacher raises cancer awareness By Josh Sherman

BEACHER MICHELLE Saunders couldn’t believe it when she was diagnosed with cancer right before her 40th birthday. Now 42 and cancer-free, she is sharing her story of recovery to raise awareness of what it is like to have the disease that close to half of all Canadians will be stricken with in their lifetimes. Saunders is slated to speak at 8:30 a.m. outside Princess Margaret Cancer Centre on June 17 as part of the Journey to Conquer Cancer walk/run. “It’s important to tell

these stories because there’s no other way that we can create action and change,” said Saunders, who advocates for improvements to cancer treatment. “I feel like we can do so much better than chemotherapy,” she added. To Saunders, speaking at events like the Journey to Conquer Cancer is part of the recovery process, she said. “It really is, because your life as a survivor after, you still feel like there’s recovery there,” she explained. Saunders plans to keep her talk short and sweet at about five minutes, though she noted her story can get “pretty raw.”

Ryan Singh, a volunteer for the BernsMcGown campaign and a friend for 12 years, said her win was a true reflection of how the neighbourhood and the province needs and deserves change. “She’s incredibly empathetic and human. People resonate with her and I wanted people of this riding to believe in her and see her the way I see her. The results prove that they do, and they were ready for change,” said Singh. The Progressive Conservatives took the lead early in the evening with Ford Nation sweeping areas north of the city and knocking the Liberals out of official party status. BernsMcGown’s win was a community success and attendees at Firkin on Danforth were happy to send a New Democrat to Queen’s Park. “I will continue to fight for what’s important to me and continue to build momentum. We will work with the Progressive folks who win and we will fight against any legislative change that will harm people,” she said. Born in South Africa, Berns-McGown holds a PhD in international politics. She was a professor at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, teaching diaspora studies, and later entered the Institute of Corporate Directors’ Director Education Program to work with its board and senior management team to help rid organizations of systemic racism and oppression. Other area winners included Peter Tabuns, who has been serving the community since 2006. Tabuns was re-elected in his riding of Toronto—Danforth. Doly Begum, who took the Scarborough Southwest region, also made history on Thursday evening as the NDP candidate won the riding and the honour of being the first Canadian citizen from Bangladesh to win in the election according to The Daily Star.

Police rolling out smart phones By Josh Sherman Toronto Police Service’s 55 and 54 Divisions are going to be more connected come the fall. “Every one of our police officers, every single one, is going to be issued a smartphone,” 55 Division superintendent Reuben Stroble announced last month. The work smartphones are being issued through the TPS’ Connected Officer Program, which was piloted earlier this year at 51 Division, making 55 and 54 Divisions the first of a broader planned rollout. The encrypted, firewalled devices will give police access to the same information systems that they would be able to access in their cars or at their desks.

“They’ll have it all in the palm of their hand, so this is really big for us,” Stroble explained. Many—if not all—police officers already have smartphones. But the special Samsung devices will be more secure than those officers may already have for personal use, Stroble said. “There’s a lot more security.” 55 Division’s acting inspector, Warren Wilson, noted another benefit the program has over officer’s simply using their personal phones on the job. An officer’s personal phone won’t be confiscated as evidence, which could happen if they used them to document a victim’s injuries by taking a picture, for example. “This is a better solution for sure,” he explained.

IT’S BEEN close to a month since Zabia Afzal, a 30-yearold York University PhD student and activist, has been missing. She was last seen on May 10th when she took an Uber from her workplace at Vaughan to Woodbine Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard East in the Beach neighbourhood. While the police searched the waters off Woodbine Beach, York Regional Police combed nearby areas collecting information from the public. Zubair Afzal, her brother, has been actively involved with authorities and the media as well as online in his efforts to search for his sister. “We don’t have any updates on Zabia as of now but we hope she is safe and we are trying to be optimistic,” said Afzal. Woodbine bike lanes cause increase in side street traffic Vicki Bales

and concerned residents from Golfview, Woodbine bike lanes are part of a Burgess, Duvernet and Cassels Avenues larger plan to encourage people to WE ARE writing in advance of the city’s review of the traffic and cycling situation on Woodbine Avenue, tied to the fact that almost a year has passed since the Woodbine bike lanes were installed. We are a group of residents who live in the area bounded by Corley in the south, Glenmount Park Road (and the adjacent ravine streets of Glen Davis and Love Crescents) in the east and Gerrard Street in the north. We are concerned about the safety of our neighbourhood streets as well as other streets in the area.

get out of their cars and onto their bikes. This has been promoted as one step in making our streets calmer and safer. Unfortunately, that is not happening. In fact, for our neighbourhood, the reverse is true. The flow of cars on Woodbine during rush hours is overwhelming, literally. Ironically, inside streets, including those listed above, are less safe than they were before Woodbine was narrowed to one lane of traffic travelling north and one, south. Norway Junior P.S. is located

at the bottom of Golfview. At just the time that children are heading home from school, we experience an endless flow of traffic on neighbourhood streets that does not ease off until at least 6:30 p.m. Drivers frustrated with crawling up Woodbine who cut through our neighbourhood to access Gerrard more quickly regularly commit speed and stopping violations resulting in frequent near misses. A December 2017 traffic study showed high volumes of traffic travelling northbound on Golfview during the afternoon rush hour approaching 300 cars during peak hours compared to a more modest 20 to 30 cars per hour during non-

peak times. We are dealing with a situation that is the result of inadequate planning at the city level to address the volume and flow of cars. We are also seeing the results of poor planning at the neighbourhood level to provide measures that address the impact of changes to Woodbine on inside streets throughout the Woodbine corridor. Speed humps are not the only answer. We are urging the city to go beyond limited traffic counts and speed studies as part of its forthcoming review of changes to Woodbine. We suggest the following: • The review needs to consider

the impact on the pockets of streets like ours that are affected by the traffic run-off. • City council needs to take into account the growing voices, such as those of Councillor Paula Fletcher, to lift the moratorium on Community Safety Zones and give more authority to staff to approve traffic calming in Community Safety Zones and School Safety Zones. • Staff, as well as continuing and incoming political leaders, need to pay attention to the still-emerging plans to implement the City’s Vision Zero. It holds the promise of making the safety of pedestrians, school children, older adults and cyclists a priority. It cannot come too soon.

We need free-floating, car-share services like Car2Go I COULDN’T agree more with In My Opinion writer Mark Richardson, Beach Metro News, May 29. My son and I ended our two families’ long time sharing of one car a year ago. Both of us then signed up with free-floating carshare company Car2Go, because it was so easy to find the cars parked in our neighbourhood. We are now two of the 80,000 Toronto residents without the free-floating carshare option. I have written to my councillor several times in support of the free-floating car-share idea and also made a deputation to City Council’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) in favour of the free-floating car-share pilot project. But even though the pilot project was passed by PWIC and City Council, councillors,

including east enders, placed so many parking and other restrictions on Car2Go that the business model they were stuck with was untenable. I particularly like Mr. Richardson’s comment: “legacy councillors fretted about parking access and privacy concerns for residents who mostly live within one kilometre of existing streetcar and subway services.” And isn’t that the point? Councillors should be encouraging residents to get rid of owned cars that are clogging our streets and endangering pedestrians and cyclists, and use the public transit, and walkability that is available to us. Former chief planner Jennifer Keesmat asks why our streets are being used for ‘car storage’ when their removal would greatly open up our streets. And the cost of a parking permit does not at all

reflect the cost of the real estate that is used up. Parking is heavily subsidized and the price for parking cars needs to be raised and the revenue used to pay for public transit. So for the municipal elections this fall, we need new councillors who understand how to “move Toronto forward” in the 21st century. Murray Lumley

STREET SHOCK RE: PETER McArthur’s letter, May 29: I share his sentiments about our Main Street dying and it’s breaking our hearts. I believe that the main reason why residents have stopped shopping on Queen Street has been the ongoing construction noise. Once customers have

stopped shopping somewhere, it is difficult to get them back. Who has wanted to dodge bulldozers and dump trucks to browse in shops, and then have to drag their bundle buggy through mud on the sidewalk or around barricades on the street? The best way to negotiate Queen Street has been to rush through your necessary business as fast as you can and get back in the taxi and come home. Even the side streets have so much construction noise that a quiet, relaxing walk in any direction is impossible. Residents have not been able to greet each other on the street, and this lack of opportunity for communication breaks down the community. These things have happened because of developer greed,

political ineptitude, and resident apathy. The community needs to be turned around before it deteriorates into increased crimes, lower property values, and further shop closings. Lorna Houston

NOTHING WAS going to keep Monarch Park Lions pitcher Nick Gryguc out of the game, not even a case of appendicitis. The 17-year-old MVP pitcher was hospitalized just days before the Lions were to face Humberside in the TDSSAA semi finals, but not playing in the big game wasn’t an option— appendix or no appendix. “It was constant pain,” said Gryguc, who knew something was wrong when he couldn’t keep his dinner down on May 25, the day after the Lions’ 4-3 quarter-final victory over Lawrence Park. After a trip to the ER that night, Gryguc had his appendix removed the next day. “The first thing I asked was, ‘How long is the recovery?’” he recalled. After being told it could be two to six weeks, Gryguc was concerned, but after he tried jogging the day before, he figured he’d be able to handle the rigors of play on the field. The Lions head coach Bryan McAlpine wasn’t so sure. “McAlpine wasn’t, you know, too impressed when I said I was going to be playing on Wednesday,” said Gryguc. McAlpine admitted he didn’t have high hopes for the possibility of Gryguc returning to the lineup. “I kind of

After a back and forth that saw both the coach and the player standing firm, McAlpine asked to speak to Mrs. Gryguc, who informed the coach she could get a note from the surgeon clearing her son to play. “At that point, I kind of yielded, and of course I wanted my MVP in there,” said McAlpine. “You could see it in his eyes, he was hungry. He was not going to be denied,” he added. Returning to the lineup for the semis against Humberside, Gryguc didn’t take to the mound as teammate

Ronan Smith pitched a complete game, helping the Lions trounce Humberside 6-3 to earn a spot in the finals. In the championship game against Northern Secondary School, Gryguc did return to his familiar position. Playing through the pain, he pitched a complete game as well, albeit one the Lions ended up losing 7-5. McAlpine is quick to point out that three of the runs against Gryguc were unearned stemming from two errors at third base. “Those weren’t on him.” Despite the missed opportunity to represent the Tier 1 South Toronto Division at the Ontario Federation of

School Athletic Associations’ provincial championships, Gryguc was “ecstatic” just to have had the chance to play in the finals. “It’s never time to give up in baseball,” said Gryguc, who picked up the sport at the age of 12. McAlpin described Gryguc “powerful” and “competitive” baseball player, and suggested he won’t forget Gryguc’s perseverance any time soon. “I call him my bulldog. When I knew he was going to play, I knew we were going to get some version of awesomeness from him,” McAlpine explained. “I’ll be talking about Nick for quite a while.”

Danforth C.T.I. ends school year with medieval mayhem By Alison Wong

STUDENTS AT Danforth C.T.I. look forward to the annual trebuchet contest each year. They built ancient siege engines to fling water balloons at teachers, principals, and office administration. The school specializes in taking the students’ academic knowledge and applying it to make exciting designs and systems and it offers many enriching and accelerating opportunities such as the Specialist High School Major Program and the MaST program. The trebuchet contest involves students from the one-of-a-kind and creative Grade 12 Engineering Design course which is unique to Danforth. Roberta Tevlin, the teacher who developed the course, guides the students to learn how they can solve problems independently. Students in this two-year program design and build a variety of contraptions, including mini roller coasters, hydraulic arms, Lego animatronics, hovercrafts, speedboats, and hot air balloons. For this contest, the students were required to do basic research, allowing them to gain an understanding as to how this type of catapult functions. In addition to researching, multiple in-class simulations educated the students about calibration and the requirements necessary to have a proper trebuchet. In teams, students began to build the catapults and test them in the school parking lot. To differentiate the groups of students, each team was required to have a funky theme and dress up for the contest. This year’s themes were tie-dye, cowboys, flying unicorns, and medieval knights. During the competition, teams fired many water balloons at an array of human targets within two-minute time constraints. Each team gained a point if they hit their designated target, allowing them to obtain many points per round. The team with the most points would win the contest. This year’s winners were the members of the flying unicorn team composed of Zanna Fong, Mahalia Gilmore, Maria Labeeba, Jack Locke, Adri Saha, and Manning Whitby. This favourite event draws hundreds of excited students every year.

LAST YEAR, the founder of Analeigh Dance Company didn’t know if her new competitive studio in Leslieville would work out. Nine months—and several awards and job bookings for her students—later, Murphy Macdonald-Rea is breathing easier. “I’m excited for the years to come and I’m super impressed and proud,” said Macdonald-Rea, who set up the company at 20 Leslie St. this past September with the goal of getting her students paid dance gigs in music videos, movies, and more.

The students, who range in age from 12 to 16, enrolled in Analeigh’s first year of programming have done just that. “Everyone has gotten a job,” she said. The studio has also punched above its weight. Based on competition results, it placed third out of 12 studios, some of which were about three times larger than the 22-member Analeigh Dance Company. “It was a very big surprise, I think, for everyone, considering we were so small.” Here, meet four of the dance studio’s rising stars.

Holly Fediash, 15 WHEN HOLLY Fediash was three, her parents wanted her to have an extracurricular activity of her own, she said, because her brother was playing hockey all the time. Years later, dance allows Fediash to express herself, and keeps her involved with it. “I just really like expressing myself and finding different ways to tell stories,” she said before class. Probably the gigs she’s been getting don’t hurt, either—Fediash recently appeared in an ad for Rac N Roll, a popular accessory brand, and was booked to star in a short film, currently untitled and in the pre-production stage. “That one’s going to be the most exciting, because I haven’t really done anything like that,” said Fediash of the forthcoming short.

GRACE NASSIF’S parents put her into dance school before she could have much of a say in the matter, but she doesn’t seem to mind. “Since I was three, I really liked it,” she added. Sticking with dance paid off this year for Nassif in the form of multiple awards, including the 1st Overall Novice Award at the Elite Dance Challenge and 3rd Overall Inter Novice at the Embrace competition. She also earned a Dance Convention Scholarship at the Elite Dance Challenge and received an invitation to join the Luv2Dance National Elite Team. “First overall novice… that was out of a lot of people. It felt the most important,” she said. “I was so excited.”

Hailey Hemsworth, 12 DOING GYMNASTICS was taking a toll on Hailey Hemsworth. “It got too hard and it was too much work, and I was sore every day,” explained Hemsworth, who took up gymnastics before her second birthday. The solution? Two years ago she switched to dance, which still lets her incorporate elements of gymnastics but without all the pain. She hasn’t looked back. In her first year of dance competitions, she has already gotten leading results. Among her achievements, she won the 3rd Overall Novice Award at the Elite Dance Challenge and received a Dance Convention Scholarship at the very same event. At the Embrace competition, she was the third-overall inter novice, and at the Luv2Dance competition she scored the highest novice mark.

Michael Moreno, 16 MICHAEL MORENO is the only boy at Analeigh Dance Company, but he’s used to that by now. He’s been dancing from the age of four, and for much of the time he’s been the lone boy. “Since I was a kid I’ve been mostly the only guy,” Moreno said. “I find it’s cool how even though I’m the only boy they incorporate me in all their dances,” he added. Moreno got into dancing after watching his sister perform, and he’s drawn to the variety of movements it allows for compared to other sports. “Dance could be either jolts or it could be fluidity,” he said. Moreno recently appeared in the same Rac N Roll advert as Fediash, and he earned a Dance Convention Scholarship at the Elite Dance Challenge, to name just a couple of his accomplishments.

EVAN J. Butchers, who attended Malvern in the late 50s and early 60s, was elected as the new president of the Malvern Red and Black Society, and Sandra Burk from the Class of 1975 was voted in as its new vice president—both have had a long association with the Beach community. We wanted to welcome our new president and asked him to introduce himself to the Beach Metro News readership. In the photo, he is seen standing beside the new sesquicentennial plaque funded by alumni donations. The plaque is a lasting reminder for future Malvern students that we had marked a significant occasion in the history of Canada. The new maple and other trees, gardens, and plantings around the school are also a tribute to the 150th anniversary of our country. As an Ontario licensed funeral director for 49 years and a loyal Malvernite, Butchers has served his community in various capacities. He gave support through past memberships as a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Mississauga and as a director with the Lions Club of Frankford, Ontario where he owned and operated his own funeral home for a number of years. During that time he was chosen “Lion of the Year” in 1996 and also served as president of the Frankford Business Association and as a director with the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation. Everyone Has a Story to Tell

Dhenzel and Zabi imagine new worlds By Josh Sherman

DHENZEL OBENG and Zabi Hassan, two 2018 graduates of local art, animation and design career college Max the Mutt (2944 Danforth Ave.), are well on their way to establishing themselves in their field. But it’s been a long journey for the 20-something concept artists. Obeng, 22 and Hassan, 23, both of whom completed the Danforth Village institution’s four-year Concept Art for Animation & Video Games program this spring, are already on the radar of prominent game designer Ubisoft— so much so that Hassan was offered a full-time position this past December, months before graduation, and Obeng won the Ubisoft Toronto NXT Showcase Award resulting in a paid internship for this summer. During a trip to Max the Mutt earlier this month, the two friends traced their interest in the arts all the way back to Charles H. Best Middle School, which they attended together in North York. Despite having mutual creative interests and being enrolled in the same specialized cyber-arts program, it took them until high school to form anything resembling a friendship. “You thought I was a nerd,” said Hassan to Obeng, who was seated beside him and admitted, “I was a brat when I was younger. I still think I am too today.” By high school, the situation had changed. They engaged in friendly competition in art class and in Grade 12 set their sights on careers as concept art-

Each won a full scholarship from software company Adobe, which paid Max the Mutt tuition. “Initially when I started it was a lot to do with the world-building aspect,” Obeng said of his passion. “You’re effectively creating all these different worlds for aesthetic purposes and for production purposes,” he continued. To win the Ubisoft internship, Obeng had to come up with a concept package for a futuristic, sci-fi Bangalore setting haunted by an apparition at night, as per Ubisoft’s prompt. Late to register, he had only a month to finish. “I spent a lot of time trying to get the accuracy of

the shapes right before I layered on top with detail,” he explained. Hassan, who placed third in the Ubisoft competition in 2017 as a third-year student, was drawn to concept art for similar reasons as Obeng. He compares the role to the experience of reading a book. “Everyone visualizes it differently, and the most exciting part for me is I get to read this book and show people the way I see it,” he explained. “Having the ability to do that and just create a world on its own is quite astonishing to me.” He and Obeng founded Edge Control Studio in their second year, with the long-term aim of producing their own original content. For now, they are using it as the name behind Edge Control Expo, an event series through which they bring in industry experts to teach the next generation of concept artists. Edge Control Expo 2018 runs from Aug. 25–26, and features speakers including Ubisoft concept artist Jeff Simpson. Tickets are available at www. edgecontrolexpo.com/tickets. To Max the Mutt co-director Maxine Schacker, Edge Control showcases the qualities that have led to Obeng and Hassan’s success. “It’s indicative really of who they are and their spirit and their entrepreneurial nature, and it’s a contribution to Toronto,” she said. “They’re very hard workers. They’re really passionate, they really want to do it, they’re very curious, nothing is ever enough,” she added. “When you have that kind of attitude you have a very good chance of success, I think.”

n our house, Father’s Day would not be complete without this chocolate mocha cake frosted with mocha buttercream and served with a generous dollop of pure vanilla ice cream. Rich. Yes! Moist and delicious. Yes! And yes, very addictive! In fact, it is the perfect cake for special occasions of all sorts and can take a variety of guises—ideal to tote to a picnic in a 13 x 9 inch (3 L) rectangular cake pan, or as cupcakes with a rosette of the mocha buttercream or baked into a layer cake and frosted with candles for the perfect birthday cake. Any way you slice it, this is the ultimate cake for a celebration.

Chocolate Mocha Cake

This cake can be made ahead and frozen with or without the frosting. It is the perfect cake to carry to a family gathering – bake, frost and serve it from the same pan in which it has been baked. 2 cups (500 mL) granulated sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp (10 mL) vanilla 3/4 cup (175 mL) vegetable oil 2 3/4 cup (650 mL) all purpose flour 3/4 cup (175 mL) sifted cocoa 2 tsp (10 mL) baking soda 2 tsp (10 mL) baking powder 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon 2 cups (500 mL) hot, strong coffee Preheat oven to 350F (180C). Line

bottoms of two (9 inch / 23 cm) cake pans with parchment paper. Set aside. In large mixing bowl, beat sugar, eggs, vanilla and oil for 4 minutes. In separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Prepare the hot, strong coffee using 1 tbsp (15 mL) instant coffee or strong drip coffee. Combine dry ingredients alternately with egg mixture and coffee, starting and finishing with dry ingredients. Pour batter into prepared pan or pans. For 13 x 9 inch (3 L) pan bake 40 – 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. For 9 inch (23 cm) layer cakes, bake 30 -35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. For cupcakes 12 -15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool thoroughly on cooling rack before frosting.

Mocha Buttercream Frosting Rich and delicious, this creamy frosting is the ideal consistency to spread for tops and sides of cake or for piping rosettes or borders. It is best spread at room temperature. If it is necessary to refrigerate buttercream, beat with electric mixer to bring it back to spreading consistency. 1 cup (250 mL) soft butter (leave out at room temperature overnight) 6 cups (1 1/2 L) icing sugar, sifted 3/4 cup (175 mL) cocoa, sifted 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla 1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt 1/3–1/2 cup (75 mL) hot strong coffee In large mixing bowl using electric mixer, beat butter until fluffy and stands in peaks like whipped cream. Stir together icing sugar and cocoa. Using an electric mixer on high speed, gradually beat icing sugar mixture into creamed butter until too stiff to beat.

Tips for Frosting Cakes Frosting a cake to give an expert finish can be as time consuming as baking the cake itself. These tips will help you do a professional job: • Make sure frosting is the right consistency; it should be thick and creamy. If too thin it will not adhere to the cake; if it is too thick it can break the cake or not spread smoothly. • Use a large palette knife to spread the buttercream evenly. • Use long, even strokes when spreading. • If you wish to smooth over surface of frosting, dip blade of palette knife into a deep glass of warm water first before spreading. • Practise rosettes or borders on a piece of waxed paper before frosting the cake. That way, if you are not pleased with your attempts, you simply scoop up the icing and recycle it. • If you are frosting a layer cake, try to use a cake stand; place a spoonful of icing on the centre of the cake plate and centre your cake on this icing which acts like “glue” to prevent your cake from moving around on the plate. • After frosting your cake(s), refrigerate to firm up frosting then cover cake with foil and refrigerate or freeze.

Summer Heat Alerts Declining Yet Homeless Deaths Spiking by Marie Everatt

There is no doubt about it, heat and homelessness are a deadly combination. Even when the number of heat and extreme heat alerts is on the decline in Toronto, the number of deaths in the summer spikes, by over 36% in 2017 versus the previous three months. That according to City of Toronto stats from the last year and the last decade. Contrary to popular belief, summer can be harder on the homeless than winter. Toronto saw 7 heat and extreme heat alerts in 2017, down from 22 the previous year and 12 in 2015. Yet deaths of homeless people in 2017 increased from 22 in April, May and June, combined, to 30 in July, August and September. Over-exposure to extreme heat can lead to excessive stress on the body resulting in illness and life-threatening heat stroke. This is especially true of the older homeless demographic. Seventy-five percent of Toronto’s homeless are men. Thirty percent are over the age of 60. According to Environment Canada, summer temperatures in Toronto often peak around 3 and 4 in the afternoon. At that same time, most shelters in the city are closed offering few options for someone who is homeless. Haven Toronto is a drop-in centre in the downtown core. Unlike shelters, Haven Toronto is open during the day. The facility invites elder homeless men in from the extreme heat, to be part of a community, to socialize and enjoy a healthy meal in an air conditioned space. Heat-related deaths are preventable. Yet extreme heat events have been associated with sudden increases in mortality, especially among older adults. Vulnerability to the health impacts of extreme heat can be traced to a combination of factors including poor health status, social isolation and low income. On the hottest, deadliest days of the year, an organization like Haven Toronto offers a life-saving alternative for those less fortunate.

t seems to be a trend to have a farmers’ market in every park in the Beach and east of downtown these days. We have the East Lynn Park Farmers’ Market, the Leslieville Farmers’ Market in Jonathan Ashbridge Park and there is a lovely farmers market at Community Centre 55 every Sunday. The produce there is exceptional! There are others that have sprouted up in the area (pardon the pun) and several have become part of our local history. One such market was initiated by the Beaches Lion Club some 30 odd years ago. It was located at the site of the old Woodbine Race Track at Queen and Woodbine which has long been demolished. Prior to that, there were other farmers’ markets. One that was popular decades ago was located in the Victoria Park and Danforth Avenue area. It was a thriving place and many of the old timers will remember it well. The original and longest running market in Toronto is of course St. Lawrence Market which was installed in the 1790s near the present day intersection of King and Jarvis. It has thrived all these years attracting farmers from the surrounding areas of Scarborough, Markham, and Etobicoke. One must remember we were a rural

area back then, and farming was our greatest asset. Let’s go back to the time when the East Toronto village was in existence from 1888 to 1908...East Toronto was an agricultural town which produced its own association of milk dealers, chicken farmers, and small amounts of wheat and grain shops. Many farmers had to take their produce down to the St. Lawrence Market, which was a long way to go at that time, but they had no other place to sell their crops so they’d make the trip. Farmers tried to implement different agricultural fairs closer to home so local farmers could sell and display their produce, but it wasn’t until 1907 that a proper farmers’ market for the locals in the east end was constructed. The company who built the market settled on a location on the north side of Main and Gerrard, across from the present Ted Reeve Arena, just north of Beach Metro News. At the time, the East Toronto Farmers’ Market was one of the greatest agricultural marketplaces in the area, second to St. Lawrence Market. It was met with great enthusiasm by both the rural population and the people of the town, and it achieved what the farmers had worked for many years to provide—a place to sell their goods. The market was successful for a little while, but like all good things the market came to an end. The city of Toronto annexed the town of East Toronto, and the Farmers’ Market of East Toronto was closed.
