Cannabis shop to open on Gerrard By Josh Sherman

THE PROVINCE has revealed the first four Ontario Cannabis Store locations, and one of them is in eastend Toronto. As per a news release from the LCBO—which will be responsible for overseeing the sale of cannabis products in Ontario—2480 Gerrard St. E. has been selected as Toronto’s inaugural legal marijuana retailer. Other locations are 304 Stone Rd. W. in Guelph, 770 Gardiners Rd. in Kingston, and 570 Harbour Expressway in Thunder Bay. “The identification of additional OCS (Ontario Cannabis Store) store locations is ongo-

ing and more information on store locations will be communicated over the coming months,” said a news release. According to the Toronto Star, Laurie French, the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association’s president, said the Toronto District School Board hoped for more distance between the OCS and schools. “My question would be what was their process to decide that location,” French told the Star. At least one local resident was not so concerned with the Ontario Cannabis Store’s arrival to the area. “Honestly it’s no big deal,” said Ian Harvey, who lives near Clonmore Drive and Warden Avenue. “You could pick any area, and you could find a school nearby.”

92 bicycle trails and counting By Josh Sherman

DANFORTH VILLAGE resident Dan Roitner is constantly seeking out new trails to cycle along. “Whenever I see a trail, I’m always wondering, Where does that go? And that curiosity has always carried me over the years,” said Roitner, an avid mountain-biking enthusiast. The answer to that question—for more than 90 trails and counting in Ontario, anyways—can be found on Roitner’s website ontariobiketrails. com. Now in its sixth year, the website is a way for Roitner to share his knowledge of the many bike trails that cut across the province. “The focus is off-road… bike

riding,” Roitner explained. Visitors to the website won’t find much in the way of bike lanes, then. The focus is on routes that are around 90 per cent offroad and will take longer than 20 minutes to ride through. Each trail featured on the website includes a review that Roitner has written, which he suggested sets his website apart from other online resources. “You can compare one place with another, and it’s from the same perspective,” he added. Last year, 40,000 cyclists checked out the website, Roitner said, and he hopes to keep increasing his following. “The first few years, it’s very quiet,” said Roitner, who also runs a

sister site that maps cross-country skiing trails. “It’s like a snowball rolling down the hill. In the beginning, it’s a very small ball,” he laughed. Although the website does include popular Toronto bike paths, such as the Martin Goodman Trail, which links the Humber Bay to the Rouge River, Roitner is more interested in showing cyclists trails that are off the beaten path. “They’re looking to find something new that they don’t know about,” he said of the site’s visitors. Since its inception, the website has already undergone three redesigns, and now Roitner has plans for an e-book. “What I wish to do is eventu-

ally publish an e-book of the reviews, the photos, and some of my own maps,” he said. “The site only makes me a dollar a day, so it’s

not a money-maker by any means right now,” he continued. “Maybe if I publish this book I can generate some revenue.”

East End Arts leaving Dawes Rd. By Josh Sherman

EAST END Arts, one of six city-funded organizations across Toronto that exists to promote local art, is moving out of its Danforth Village digs. The group, which began supporting the arts in Wards 29, 30, 31, and 32 in 2013, moved into a third-floor office at the Silver Mill (10 Dawes Rd.) after spending a year above the Linsmore Tavern (1298 Danforth Ave.). But East End Arts now plans to be all moved into a larger ground-floor space at St. Matthew’s Clubhouse (450 Broadview Ave.) on the eastern edge of the Don Valley as of April 23, with a grand opening slated for late-May or early-June. “We’ve been looking for a space for a long time,” said Shana Hillman, executive director of East End Arts, from her office. “We’re up here on the third floor so it’s not exactly accessible to the community,” she explained. The office’s unique location—the Silver Mill is actually a century-old grain mill that has been repurposed into an arts hub—created challenges for the organization, but it also presented opportu-

That programming included Main Squared, a multi-day arts festival at Main Square on the southeast corner of Main Street and Danforth Avenue. It was that event last summer that made it clear to East End Arts that it needed a headquarters that people could more easily engage with. During the 2017 festival, East End Arts used

vacant storefronts off the square not only to showcase artwork but also operate out of briefly. “Just being able to work in the community and having people be able to come in off the street and be like, ‘Hey, what do you do?’ really showed us that we wanted to have a space that was forward facing,” said Hillman. After the festival wrapped up, East End Arts got connected with Ward 30 Coun. Paula Fletcher, who helped

the group secure the new space, one that has room for about 60 people, in Riverdale. “This is part of the logical growth of starting small, moving a bit bigger, and at some point I think they’ll (East End Arts) be even bigger, and they’ll have to move out of this site,” said Fletcher. Though East End Arts is relocating, it will continue to serve Danforth Village, with Main Squared returning to the neighbourhood this summer.

Road and nearby roadways has been a concern in the area for some time. The idea to reduce speed limits on Kingston Road was floated at a Birch Cliff community meeting that Crawford hosted earlier this year. That meeting was held after a pedestrian was killed in a collision at Kingston Road and Warden Avenue. Warden is also set for a speed reduction in places. A separate item community council approved on April 4 brings down the speed limit by 10 km/h to 40 km/h on Warden between Kingston and Danforth.

Crawford said a comprehensive safety plan is in the works for the area but could not provide a timeline for when community council will have the chance to consider it. “It’s a balancing act, trying to ensure safer streets,” Crawford said. Some moves, he said, have the potential to send more traffic to residential streets. Then there is the “need to recognize that it is a major thoroughfare,” he said of Kingston Road specifically. “There is a natural speed on most streets, and regardless of what you put the

The quilts had been hung by the stage for a Feb. 3 concert at St. Nicholas Anglican Church, the group’s usual performance venue. Wauthier said she thought that, after the show, she had packed them into her van. She later discovered the bag with the quilts in it may have been mistakenly picked up by someone and taken to the Birchcliff Bluffs Food Bank as a donation, where they may have been sold on the

Kingston Rd. speed limit reduced GET READY for lower speed limits on Kingston Road. Scarborough Community Council adopted on April 4 a motion to decrease the speed limit on Kingston Road along two different stretches of the street. From Victoria Park Avenue to Birchmount Road the speed limit will be reduced to 40 km/h, down from 50. Between Birchmount Road and Midland Avenue, speed is going to be limited to 50 km/h, also a reduction of 10 km/h. The item does not need city council’s approval as Scarborough Community Council has the authority to make the decision. Ward 36 Coun. Gary Crawford said it will “take a couple of months” for signage to be changed and the new limits to come into effect. “It’s one of a number of measures that will be taking place over the coming months,” said Crawford, suggesting further action, such as stop signs and lights, as well as speed humps, could be coming to the area. Crawford said slower speed limits on Kingston make sense in part because the area is changing as a result of increased development. “The road will actually naturally change because of the development to a slower road,” he said. “It’ll be a

Police Beat 55 DIVISION Police are warning residents about a taxi scam involving the use of credit and debit cards. According to police, the taxi driver picks up a fare on the street (not from a telephoned request) and once the fare enters the vehicle, the driver begins a conversation hoping to gain the customer’s trust and let their guard down. When the customer pays with either a credit or debit card, after punching in their PIN, the machine is handed back to the driver with the card still in the machine. The driver then hands a different card back to the customer, keeping the customer’s card. To avoid this scam, police recommend the following tips: note the company and number of the taxi; don’t give the debit terminal back to the driver with your card still in it; check your card before you get out of the taxi; and check your bank account for unauthorized activity. Warmer weather and open windows provide an opportunity for increased breakins, according to police. To thwart unwanted intruders, police suggest that residents never leave windows open when they are not at home, and to install security devices that prevent windows from being opened from the outside. Tools and bicycles in unlocked sheds are a prime target, so make sure shed doors are securely locked. In addition, after a warm evening sitting on backyard patios, ensure residential doors are locked once you’ve retired for the night. The spring weather invites more foot traffic to local greenspaces and police note that teens have been robbed of their cell phones and tech devices in parks. They recommend that you look far ahead as you walk through parks and school yards, don’t be distracted while walking by looking at your phone or listening to music with earphones, and alter your path if something causes you concern. Police also point out that bikes and other property should not be left unattended. For more information and tips, contact 55 Division Police at 416-808-5500.

ingly well.” Volden said the victory marked the first time a Ted Reeve team had won a provincial title in the rink’s 54 year history. “It’s a big deal,” he said. “We’re a community rink, I think the boys are pretty proud to have won it for this community rink in the middle of Toronto,” said the coach. However, the joy of winning also came with a certain sadness. The team is made up of players born in 2000, meaning the game was their final one together as juniors. “We’ve been together so long, so there was a ton of joy in winning but also some sadness because you realiaze it’s their last game, and it’s the last time they’re going to play together,” said Volden. “Lots of boys didn’t want to leave the ice,” he noted, adding, “There was lots of hugging and lots of tears and obviously lots of joy.” Ahead of the game, Volden had been confident that his team would come out on top. After telling the team “we got this, guys,” Volden said he left the dressing room to the boys, as has been the approach this season. “The coaches leave the dressing room to the boys this year, and who knows what goes on in the room once the coach leaves but they were certainly ready to play,” he said. The Thunder earned their berth to play for the championship title after winning the GTHL city championships. This year, they had an undefeated record in their division, going six for six. The team racked up 25 goals while allowing just four. “Our group of boys were really the first group of double-A boys to play out of Ted Reeve,” said Volden.

Beach home prices rise 4% annually By Josh Sherman

AMID A market cooldown, home prices in the Beach remained higher than levels reached a year ago, the latest monthly report from the Toronto Real Estate Board suggests. The benchmark selling price of a home in the board’s E02 area, which is bounded by Danforth Avenue to the north, Victoria Park Avenue to the east, Lake Ontario to the south, and Coxwell Avenue to the west, was $1,037,900 in March, up 4.18 per cent from the same month last year. In total, 61 homes changed hands throughout the Beach area last month, while 77 new listings appeared. On average, homes that sold in the E02 area in March had been on the market for 13 days, below the Greater Toronto Area average of 20 days. For the entire Greater Toronto Area, the benchmark price of a home was $760,800 in March, down 1.5 per cent from a year earlier. Meantime, 7,228 home sales were recorded in the GTA, a decrease of 39.5 per cent compared to this time in 2017. At month’s end, the number of actively listed homes on the resale market had reached 15,971, more than double the properties prospective buyers could choose from a year ago. Jason Mercer, TREB’s director of market research,

Above, 192 Neville Park Blvd. was one of the homes to sell conditionally in the Beach last month. in a statement noted how the number of listings available impacts home prices. “Right now, when we are comparing home prices, we are comparing two starkly different periods of time: last year, when we had less than a month of inventory versus this year with inventory levels ranging between two and three months. It makes sense that we haven’t seen prices climb back to last year’s peak,” he said. “However, in the second

half of the year, expect to see the annual rate of price growth improve compared to Q1, as sales increase relative to the below-average level of listings,” he added. Anita Springate-Renaud, a broker of record with Engel & Völkers, said she is already noticing the market picking up in the Beach and more generally as well. “If things are priced well, things are moving,” she said. “There was that fear that no one was going to buy or sell anything,” she added.

In My Opinion

Support local businesses for a vibrant main street Mary-Margaret McMahon Councillor Ward 32

I AM also worried about Queen Street! A main street in a beautiful and popular area of the city should not have so many empty shops. High rents notwithstanding, what are some of the other reasons businesses do not last? Possibly, the proprietors have not completed business plans that include financial forecasting for the low tourist season in the Beach? Possibly, the business concept, services being

offered, wares being displayed are not enticing to potential patrons? Possibly, customer service is lacking? I am not sure if these are factors at all but at the end of the day, if we truly desire a vibrant retail strip in our area, it is up to us to support our businesses! During my time in office, this has been a persistent issue. Here is what I have done for Queen Street in the past 7.5 years: REPEALED VACANT PROPERTY TAX REBATE (EFFECTIVE THIS JULY) Property owners were entitled to a 30-per-cent tax break if their properties had been empty for 3

months or longer. It took some time and hard work, but the province has now granted us the right to repeal it! LIFTED A 30-YEAR-OLD SIZE RESTRICTION FOR OUR RESTAURANTS In 1985, the councillor at the time implemented the smallest size restriction in the city for any new proposed restaurant on Queen Street in the Beach. We heard from many west-end restauranteurs that this configuration would not work for them nowadays, so we have now implemented a more reasonable and appealing allowance.

LIFTED PARKING REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW BUSINESSES Again, an old requirement was impeding new shopkeepers from coming to the Beach given the tight spacing for our buildings and hodgepodge of unique back lanes. We have many Toronto Parking Authority Green P lots available, as well as, accessible transit, cycling and walking infrastructure! New businesses will now no longer be required to provide parking spaces. APPROVED PATIOS AND BOULEVARD CAFES While these are sometimes not welcomed by the surrounding com-

munity, I’m a firm believer in animating our streets by allowing patrons of a restaurant to enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, when polled, some residents repeatedly vote against patio applications. If a poll fails, applicants must wait two years before reapplying. I fought for patios by overriding negative polls when applications come to Toronto East York Community Council. I see value in on-street animation and feel it’s for the greater good of the community. Now both you and the owners of Sauvignon, Hero Burger, Tim Hortons, The Greenwood, Bodega Henriette, and others can enjoy a great meal in the sunshine! Continued on Page 16

Letters to the Editor

Have your say about a park’s new name TORONTO AND East York Community Council will consider a request from Councillor Janet Davis to name part of East York’s Memorial Gardens Park after Michael Prue, the former East York mayor and MPP for BeachesEast York. Memorial Gardens Park is known as the area between the front doors of the East York Civic Centre and Coxwell Ave. and includes the East York cenotaph and the public plaza, where Remembrance Day ceremonies and the seasonal farmers’ market are held. The city had an online poll seeking public support but the poll was on-line for a short period of time and is now closed. Many people consider the whole park a place dedicated to the memory of Canada’s veterans. Many also feel that any space named there should only be named

in memory of a veteran. Last week the naming issue was posted on a local Facebook group that has over 10,000 members. The issue was very divisive; some people expressed support, but the majority of people expressed disapproval ranging from mild disbelief to outrage. Unfortunately this was posted too late for members to make any public comment through the poll. Naming a public space should be a decision that is inclusive not divisive. Michael White (Manager, Facilities Management) is preparing the report to council. If you have an opinion on this you can write Mr. White at: michael.white@toronto.ca. PHOTO: JOHN HANLEY

The vote is in – it’s The Beach! Yes, the people have spoken. The Beaches BIA announced today that, after a democratic poll of local residents, new street signs along Queen will read The Beach. The signs are part of an area revitalization sponsored by the BIA. The vote on this longstanding local controversy sparked interest, not only in this community, but citywide as Torontonians weighed in with a variety of opinions.

House calls

However, in the end, 58% of the households and businesses who voted agreed that The Beach was the proper name. When the signs are erected, they will also include a reference to the historic beach communities, Kew, Woodbine, Scarboro and Balmy. So, all you Beach people out there, don’t be smug. Invite a Beaches person to dinner.

New park design has something for everyone The Toronto Department of Parks and Recreation revealed its preliminary de-sign proposal for the new Woodbine Park at an open house on April 18 at Kew Beach Public School. Residents from the community got the opportunity to see what the future might hold in store for the last major chunk of parkland in the area. Three working committees (arts, natural environment and sports) made up of local residents came up with recommendations about what facilities the park should contain — and this proposal has something for everyone. In the south-east corner of the new park is a small wetlands habitat which park designers hope will become home to a number of species of native plants, animals and birds. There are also large treed areas to increase the amount of urban forest. For the cultural sector, an open-air amphitheatre is planned.

There are also areas in the park suitable for hosting the summer festivals which have grown too large for Kew Gardens. A nod to the history of the property has been accommodated with some interpretive panels and a garden which incorporates the old paddock clock tower. For sports fans, there are three soccer pitches pencilled in. However, these pitches are temporary because they are located in the area of the proposed new school. One of the biggest criticisms of the new proposal is that it only considers the area east of Coxwell and north of the Lake Shore, despite the presence of two adjoining pieces of parkland. Susan Richardson said that until amalgamation is complete, the other two parks are still controlled by Metro. If you want to voice an opinion, it’s not too late. Contact Toronto Parks and Rec. at 392-4885 to get a comment sheet.

Re-cycling project set

Beginning May 3

It’s known at City Hall that many Ward 9 residents are recycling advocates. A pilot project supported by a federal Government grant thrived in this area a few years ago and many people here make a habit of trucking their cans and bottles to the local re-cycling station in the Dominion Store parking lot at Kingston Road and Victoria Park Ave. Now City Council has voted to begin a regular pick-up of cans and bottles in an area bounded by Lee Ave., Queen St., Wood-

bine Ave. and Kingston Rd. Date of the weekly pick-up has not yet been set. “I hope that this will be a successful preliminary step to starting a city-wide re-cycling program,” writes Alderman Dorothy Thomas. “Residents of Ward 9 have traditionally had a keen interest in the environment and I feel sure that everyone will get behind this program,” she observed.

Beyoncé beginners at Beach studio

PHOTO: SUBMITTED

Natalie Borch’s new dance studio puts the focus on inclusivity. By Josh Sherman

NATALIE BORCH noticed local east-end dance studios were lacking something. “There’s a lot of studios that cater towards kids,” she said. “There’s not a lot for the adults—especially for dance,” she added. So about a year ago, Borch—who danced professionally in her twenties before taking a break—decided to change that, and in February, she opened The Pink Studio (2053 Danforth Ave.). “I really wanted to create a space that was not just body positive, but also LGBT inclusive and, most of all, inclusive to beginners,” the mother of two explained. Some studios, Borch said, can be intimidating, especially for those who aren’t seasoned dancers. “There’s a lot of people who are in their thirties, forties, fifties, and they want to take a ballet class or a hip-hop class, and this is the place to do that,” she explained. But at The Pink Studio, Borch aims to get less-experienced dancers out of their com-

fort zones and trying things they wouldn’t have otherwise, all in a judgement-free environment. “The teachers are all about empowering and supporting people,” she said. So far, the Beginner Beyonce class has been the most popular of the studio’s options—these range from packaged and dropin choices. “You’re gonna learn how to strut,” she said, noting a lesson from the Beyonce crash course (high heels are optional). Members can also try classes focusing on ballet, jazz, funk, and even cabaret-burlesque. Pilates and yoga instruction is also available. For Borch, dance has been a boost to her confidence, and it’s something she wants to share with others at her studio. “It made me feel good in my body, it made me feel beautiful. It made me feel good in what my body could do,” she said. In addition to classes, The Pink Studio also hosts workshops, and the latest takes place on April 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the studio and focuses on self defence. Free Haircuts For The Homeless by Marie Everatt

JOE RIZZA, owner of Hair Dynamix Salon and Spa in the Beach, spends Tuesdays, his day off, providing free haircuts for Toronto’s homeless men. For almost a year now, Rizza has been helping in a downtown drop-in centre. The facility, Haven Toronto, serves thousands of men over the age of 50 whose lives have been affected by poverty and homelessness. Any night in Toronto, over 7,000 people are living on the street and in city shelters. Over thirty percent are age 50 or older. "I enjoy spending time with the guys and hearing their stories,” says Rizza. He adds, "I am moved by the difference a haircut makes to their self-esteem." Beacher and local business owner, Joe Rizza of Hair Dynamix

April 15th was the start of National Volunteer Week in Canada. Salon and Spa cuts hair for free for clients of Haven Toronto. Like Joe, there are 12.7 million Canadians who volunteer a combined 2 billion hours annually. According to Statistics Canada, “Over 47% of Canadians over age 15 volunteer." The hours add up to make a big difference. Lauro Monteiro is the Executive Director of Haven Toronto, the only agency in Canada dedicated to serving the unique needs of elder homeless men. “We’re a small organization making a big difference.” says Monteiro. "For us to be open 365 days a year, we rely on generous, caring people who donate their time and money." "With help from volunteers,” adds Monteiro, “Last year we served 52,000 healthy meals, distributed 11,000 articles of clothing and provided shaves and haircuts for hundreds of elder homeless men who otherwise could not afford it and would go without.” Volunteering is a selfless act; people give their time and expertise to help others without expecting anything in return. Yet, many volunteers will tell you that you get more than you give. Rizza, one such example, says "Volunteering at Haven Toronto has helped me realize just how fortunate I am." National Volunteer Week continues until the 21st of this month. The need for volunteers at organizations like Haven Toronto never ends.

ATTENDING MIDDLE school in the Beach, musician Jordan Miller didn’t feel like she fit in. There were expectations to meet. There was the pressure to wear preppy clothes from Hollister (Jordan preferred a rotating wardrobe of vintage threads). “I felt that need to, like, escape,” said the former Glen Ames Senior Public School student and lead singer and bassist of the buzz band The Beaches. Together with bandmates Leandra Earls, Eliza Enman McDaniel and Kylie, her sister, Jordan channelled those feelings into music—and people are listening. The band, which excluding Earls all live in the Beach, just won a Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year this March following the October 2017 release of their debut full-length record, Late Show. “This is definitely a breakthrough year for us, ‘cause our album came out, and we did our first American tour, and we sold out our show at the Opera House. We’re doing our first headline tour across Canada, and we have a bunch of songs on the radio, so it was really cool to be recognized by our Canadian peers,” said Jordan, speaking from her parents’ home in the Beach during a telephone interview. “And it was... a cool moment for me to tell my parents that I won a Juno,” she added. Not every parent supports their progeny’s pursuit of a career in the arts, but that hasn’t been a problem for the Miller sisters. ‘My

parents are super encouraging,” said Jordan. The band’s early success didn’t hurt, she suggested. “It also helped that we had gotten signed right out of high school,” she said. The sound that caught the ear of Universal Music Canada is one that Jordan describes as “a mix between glam rock and garage rock.” She cites David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, the Strokes, and Lou Reid as some of the band’s inspirations. “We pull from a lot of ‘70s and ‘90s influences,” Jordan explained. Lyrically, Jordan addresses topics including romance, money woes, and the adolescent alienation that turned her to the arts in the first place. “The fact that I didn’t belong definitely inspired me when I was growing up here to write songs like ‘Loner’ about not really feeling like you fit in anywhere and to kind of break out on your own,” she said, referring to a track from one of the band’s earlier EPs. Jordan also has fond Beach memories. “As I’ve grown up, I really do appreciate the community that I’ve had here,” she said. “As I’ve been writing more and more, and thinking about how great my childhood and my formative years were, I have to contribute some of that to the Beaches.” The Beaches Late Show Tour begins April 21 in Vancouver. The band will be back in Toronto on May 11 at the Opera House. Before then, the band is putting the finishing touches on their act. “It’s the first time we’re doing an hour-and-a-half long set, so we’ve been working that out,” said Jordan.

ANY TIME Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro needs a still photographer on set, he calls on a Beacher: Kerry Hayes. But though Hayes has become a fixture on del Toro’s sets, most recently for the Shape of Water, he hadn’t planned on a career in the film industry at all. On purpose or not, after getting hired by a director named Woody Allen to shoot on-set stills, starting with 1980’s Star Dust Memories, Hayes was kept busy with Hollywood work, and his artistic shots took a back seat. “I’ve always wanted to… pursue my own vision,” said Hayes, who moved here from New York in the ‘90s. “I’ve never really explored it to the extent that I would like because of just time constraints,” he explained. As Hayes approaches retirement, he sees a chance to focus on his own oeuvre. He’s working to secure the rights to behind-the-scenes pics for a book, and he’s preparing to display his work at The Porch Light (982 Kingston Rd.) for Scotiabank’s upcoming Contact Photography Festival, which takes place at venues throughout the city.

– Kerry Hayes

In his show, Random Acts of Vision: The Winogrand Series, set to run May 1–31 with a reception at The Porch Light May 6 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Hayes brings together images snapped in recent years during his travels across three continents, including stops in India and Nicaragua. A child shivers on a beach before a a brilliant aquamarine background in one photo from the collection, while in another, the reflection of water on a ship’s hull creates a sort of optical illusion. The images included in the show are, in at least one way, the polar opposite of the work Hayes has made a comfortable living off of. Nothing is staged. Hayes takes the approach of street photographers, who capture life as it comes. Photographers might have guessed as much from the series’ title. (Garry Winogrand, a late New York photographer, has influenced Hayes work.) “If you look at most gallery shows, there’s some kind of theme, they’re related in some way. Somebody likes to shoot grain towers. Someone likes to shoot their naked children. Somebody likes to shoot the circus,” the selftaught photographer said. “I work the other way around. I like to go out and just shoot whatever looks great, whatever captures my eye, and it could be a tree stump in the ice,” Hayes continued.

Wintertime can be quiet in the Beach. Businesses sometimes struggle to survive without the chaotic hustle and bustle of the summertime crowds. To that end, I wholeheartedly embraced the concept of art installations along the water’s edge with an international competition to attract the designers. Art meets nature meets fun! Thanks to Roland Rom Colthoff of Raw Architects and Ted Merrick of Ferris and Associates for the idea! Hundreds of Torontonians and people further afield are swarming down to enjoy our 6 week annual cultural exhibition on the Beach. Some are venturing up to Queen street to grab a bite to eat or purchase an item. I am working with the Beach Village BIA to encourage businesses to tap into the project by offering up Winter Stations specials and celebrations.

We are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by gorgeous parks in Ward 32, not to mention Lake Ontario at our doorstep! Woodbine Park was built as a city park to host an assortment of events. I have been a big proponent of encouraging more festivals to occur in this great green space. There is something for everyone all across the city to enjoy and celebrate at Woodbine Park each summer! SUPPORTED THE BEACH VILLAGE BIA Ward 32 is host to 5 Business Improvement Areas and 1 Business Community. These volunteer groups work tirelessly to promote our local businesses and help create vibrant main streets. The Beach Village BIA has hosted spectacular events over the years including their summer Movie Nights, Christmas Carolling, Music in the Park, and much more. They have engaged with Community Centre 55 to create murals on the planters and buildings to add a splash of colourful art to our streets. Their flowers and banners create a warm welcome to the Beach and their future plans include a master streetscaping plan. They have helped spearhead the refresh of Kew Gardens and will continue that idea over at Ivan Forrest Gardens in the future. We are fortunate to have such a strong and committed group of people on the BIA and we owe them many accolades for their efforts! #RoundOfApplause. FACILITATED THE KEW REFRESH

CHAMPIONED LIVE NATION’S PROPOSAL When Live Nation came to the city with a proposal for a new live music venue on Queen Street providing up to 2,700 music goers with 150 concerts a year, I said YES! Yes to vibrancy, to supporting our talented musicians, to waking up the sleepy east, to encouraging more foot traffic for our local businesses, and to ensuring Toronto becomes the true Music City we are crusading for. I think it is important that we are open to hosting a music venue in our wonderful east end as we continue to enjoy concerts at venues across the city. Stay tuned for a fall opening.

Many meetings, community consultations, in addition to outreach to artists, musicians, and youth occurred to help form the designs for the renovations at the entrance way to Kew Gardens. The Beach Village BIA, City Parks department, and my office worked with the community, including our working group, to modernize our park and create a more accessible and jazzy space for all to enjoy. The new configuration lends itself better for events which draw crowds from across the city and ward. It is stunning both day and night! HOSTED QUEEN STREET REVIVAL Beachers were invited to a few large workshops to brainstorm ideas on improving Queen Street. Representatives from Beach Hill Neighbourhood Association (BHNA) spoke about the beautification work they have done on Gerrard Street. Danforth East Community Association (DECA) members spoke about their incredible success at creating Pop Up Shops in their empty storefronts which successfully reduced the vacan-

cy rate by 10%. East End Arts spokeabout the benefits of adding public art, events, and murals to a streetscape. My office worked hard to organize these well attended community gatherings. Residents seemed keen to take action however it does take concerted, continual action to succeed. CRUSADED FOR STAND UP PADDLE BOARD AND BICYCLE RENTAL KIOSKS Many people have asked me over the years why they cannot rent a beach umbrella, beach chair, paddle board, or bicycle on the Beach. As a city-wide destination, I wondered the same and set out to solve it. To that end, last year we were finally able to allow for a few active recreational kiosks that would rent out bikes and paddle boards to passersby. These ventures were highly successful! If you were not able to partake in the fun last year, please take part this summer. We feel the more animation and activation of our waterfront helps bring more people into our community including Queen Street. PUSHED FOR BIKE SHARE TO LOCATE ON QUEEN STREET The Martin Goodman Trail is a popular recreational path and vital commuting choice for many Torontonians. Bike Share works on their expansion plans every summer. With our new Woodbine bike lanes, the Martin Goodman Trail, and the planned bike lanes for Danforth Avenue, it is high time Bike Share expanded further to our neck of the woods. Our 10 year Cycling Plan emphasizes the need for connectivity and so we want to be responsive with providing the necessary infrastructure and option for bike rental. ENJOYED AND ADVOCATED FOR QUEEN STREET BUSINESSES Whether I am attending a meeting, enjoying an evening at one of our establishments, or joining an event, I am regularly out and about on Queen Street. My office assists our current business owners and new potential entrepreneurs with their building permits, liquor licences, parking questions, patio requests, and much more. We also are happy to help advertise events at our shops and services and do so regularly in our bi-monthly electronic newsletter and on our social media.

WITH ALL of these efforts and initiatives, it is my hope that Queen Street will become revitalized and supported by more Torontonians right across the city. But at the end of the day, it is truly up to our community to show dedication to our beautiful area. The number one thing you can do for Queen Street is eat, shop, play—locally.

IT’S GRILLIN’ TIME!

The Main Menu

Rhubarb Revelry Jan Main is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@yahoo.ca

I

f you are lucky enough to have rhubarb growing in your garden, the first shoots should be peaking through the cold spring earth, ready for picking later this month. However, Ontario greenhouse rhubarb is ready now for the first rhubarb treat: a classic rhubarb custard pie, rhubarb streusel cake, muffin, dessert or even chutney. It is a happy addition to the table with its piquant taste and vibrant pink colour. You can harvest rhubarb from late April to early August to use immediately in these recipes here or freeze for up to a year for future use. Rhubarb, although botanically a vegetable, is generally used as a fruit. Only the long pink to red or pale green stalk is eaten as the large leaves contain oxalic acid and are toxic. Because of rhubarb’s characteristic sour taste, considerable sugar will have to be added to the recipe to make it palatable, about 4–5 cups (1 L) rhubarb to 1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar. To harvest rhubarb, pull individual stalks from the ground and discard the toxic leaves. Stalks are washed under cold running water until clean, then dried and cut into 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) –1 inch (2.5 cm) lengths depending on the recipe. If you are freezing the rhubarb, place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze in a single layer, then pack usable quantities (usually 4–6 cups (1–1.5 L) quantities) in freezer bags and freeze in the coldest part of freezer for up to a year. To use from frozen, place in a sieve and pour boiling water over to allow to thaw and pat dry, then follow recipe instructions.

Basic Stewed Rhubarb

This sauce is quickly made and can be served chilled with vanilla yogurt or granola for breakfast, served warm or chilled over ice cream for dessert or chilled and used in desserts like those described here. Rhubarb contains vitamin A and has laxative qualities often welcome at the breakfast table. Certain flavourings go well with rhubarb: ground and/or crystallized ginger, orange rind, cinnamon and the addition of fresh or frozen strawberries. Feel free to add what you personally like and have on hand. 4 cups (1 L) rhubarb stalks cut

into 1 inch (2.5 cm) lengths 3/4 cup (175 mL)–1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar (amount of sugar dependent on the sweetness of the rhubarb) 1/2–3/4 cup (175 mL) water 1 cup (250 mL) fresh sliced strawberries (optional) 1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped, crystallized ginger (optional) 1 cinnamon stick 1 piece (3 inch/7.5 mL) orange rind In a large stainless steel saucepan, combine rhubarb, sugar, water, strawberries (if using), ginger (if using), cinnamon and orange rind. Bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer until rhubarb is tender about 5–10 minutes. Let cool. Discard cinnamon and/or orange rind if using. Spoon into glass jar; cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Stewed rhubarb will keep covered and refrigerated for up to 1 week. Makes about 4 cups (1 L).

Rhubarb Fool 2 cups (500 mL) stewed rhubarb (recipe above) 1 cup (250 mL) whipping cream Drain the stewed rhubarb recipe of extra liquid (reserve for other use) and puree rhubarb fruit until smooth. Using electric mixer, whip cream until stiff and fold pureed rhubarb into cream. Spoon into small glass serving dishes or wine glasses. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. May be made up to 4 hours ahead. Makes 4–6 servings.

Rhubarb Strawberry Icecream This is a simply-made ice cream without an ice cream maker. Prepare the basic stewed rhubarb recipe with the following: 1 cup (250 mL) of granulated sugar 1 cup (250 mL) strawberries and 1/2 cup water Refrigerate until chilled; drain any liquid and puree fruit mixture. 3 cups (750 mL approx.) chilled, pureed stewed rhubarb-strawberry mixture 2 cups (500 mL) whipping cream Puree the chilled rhubarb-strawberry mixture using a food processor or blender. Using an electric mixer, beat whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Using spatula, fold rhubarb-strawberry mixture into whipped cream until uniform colour. Spoon evenly into 9 inch (23 cm) square glass or metal pan; cover and freeze about 4 hours. Alternatively, spoon mixture into 6-8 glass serving dishes and freeze up to 1 hour. Let soften a few minutes before serving. Makes 6-8 servings. Like this recipe? To see more like it from Jan Main, visit www.beachmetro. com/category/columns/the-mainmenu/.

Love is in the water Ann Brokelman is an avid birder and nature photographer naturephotosbyann.blogspot.ca

O

ver the last year I’ve been trying to figure out where my love of nature will take me in the years to come. I still haven’t figured it out, but I have narrowed down a common point of interest: wildlife behaviour. The best part of this new focus is that it has renewed my interest in all the species around us. The problem is that every time I find an answer it inevitably leads me to 3 new, often more difficult, questions. Keep reading for my latest example: I was out for a walk with my friend Vicky, enjoying a beautiful day along the waterfront, when I spotted a pair of Mute Swans, (Cygnus Olor), acting in

a way I’d never seen before. This odd behaviour, (described in the paragraph below) continued for about 15 minutes, and Vicky and I couldn’t look away. As we watched the intricate movements, of what we guessed was some sort of mating behaviour, I knew I wanted to know more. I took dozens of photos and went home to begin my research. While we were right about the movements being connected to mating, we had only scratched the surface of the story. It turns out that each pair of Mute Swans has its own courting ritual that

PHOTO: ANN BROKELMAN

Each pair of mute swans has its own unique courting ritual. they specifically develop to maintain a unique bond with their partner. The ritual is an intense courtship dance that occurs every time before they mate, which can last for over an hour. Though I cannot do it justice, I’ll try to describe the ritual Vicky and I witnessed. First, the two swans greeted each other by lowering their bodies and keeping their wings flat. Shortly thereafter they started dipping their heads in the water and then preening themselves. This action lasted for several minutes and progressively got faster and faster. Eventually the two made eye contact. The up and down motion of their necks, from their preening, became synchronized, and they looked at each other more frequently but only with sideways glances. Now the really fun part- and the one many of you have probably seen on Valentine’s day cards or online: the swans’ necks intertwine in a variety of patterns. Sometimes they formed a heart and sometimes a pattern more complicated and too difficult to describe. The movement, which was followed by them draping their necks over their partner’s body, was absolutely stunning. Next is the actual mating, (where a polite birder/photographer will turn away for a few minutes to allow for

privacy), followed by the final part of the dance: the swans face each other and use their wings to lift most of their bodies out of the water. And thus, this ballet on water, is complete.

“” “Sometimes they formed a heart …”

If you ever get a chance to see this dance, stop for a few moments to appreciate the uniqueness of what you are watching. Vicky took so many pictures that her camera’s battery died! As always, however, keep your distance and don’t interfere! Enjoy the warmer weather and make sure you look for our water friends.
