Beach trees chopped By Josh Sherman
A PART of Ashbridge’s Bay is looking less leafy—for now, at least. The city confirmed it has “largely completed” the removal of approximately 65 trees on the Ashbridge’s Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant (9 Leslie St.) property south of Lake Shore Blvd. E. The trees are being cut down to make way for a pumping station which is being built on the site to take the place of two existing ones that have been operating since 1919 and the ‘70s, respectively. The city said it plans to replant approximately 200 new trees to replace those that have been felled, though this will take approximately 10 years. “The site itself will undergo significant public realm improvements—with a linear park that will run from the edge of Leslie Barns to Coatsworth Cut,” read a statement forwarded by city spokesperson Ellen Leesti.
Cliffside seniors get club By Josh Sherman
A NEW club for seniors is launching in the Cliffside community. St. Paul’s United Church (200 McIntosh St.), near Midland Avenue and Kingston Road, plans to kick off its Cliffside Seniors’ Club next month. Reverend Daniel Benson explained the club builds upon programming St. Paul’s already

Through the construction project, Pumphouse Park is going to be revamped as well. The Tubs and Gee Gage Rugby Field will be moved north of the Ashbridge’s Skateboard Park and a 56-space parking lot featuring bike racks and lighting will be paved. “We worked with the community to develop some of these improvements which will be made to the public spaces,” the statement continued.
offers, including an exercise class that currently operates from 1-3 p.m. at the church on Thursdays, and will be supported by an awareness-raising campaign. “We had a number of programs that were running sort of helter skelter,” said Benson. “The common theme [from participants] was, ‘This is great. Why didn’t I know about it earlier?’” he continued. “The problem is communication.” A grant the church recently received from the New Horizons for Seniors Program will make possible an ad campaign to increase awareness of the programming as well as support additional programming. hat is the most interesting house, building, place, person, event, historically or otherwise, in your opinion, dear Beach Metro reader? This question has come to my attention by several people and organizations. I have written many articles over the years about historical people, buildings, events, places, et cetera, so it is time that you, the people, young and old, of the east end and Beach let me know what your favourite place, building, person, event, and why it should be recognized. In the Beach we (The Beach and East Toronto Historical Society) have recognized and have done just that over the past many years. Our Historical Society along with Heritage Toronto and other historic groups and people have brought local and national history to our area by many
ways - to schools, religious and other groups. There are many examples of this - the R. C. Harris plant at the end of Queen Street is designated as a national historic site because of ...why? Can you tell me? The Ashbridge House, located at 1444 Queen St. E. at Woodfield Road, has a historic plaque on it. Why?
“”
“No other area in the city had what we had …”
I have led hundreds of historic walks over the past decades in the east end to try to bring local history to the people, young and old, to the idea of “bring history back to the Beach.” Now, what we would like to get your ideas and notions on is what you would like to know and hear about, so we can write about them.
History comes from the people, and you are the ones that can and should tell me about your favourite things. I will do my best to, along with others, let you know about the houses, people or places, events... but I can’t unless you Beachers let our Historical Society know. Over the years we have put plaques commemorating people and buildings of historical input, eg. Glenn Gould—a plaque on the house where he was born on Southwood Drive - one of the greatest pianists that Toronto or even Canada produced. If you have a chance, go and look for it. It is there for your perusal. Last year we put a historic plaque on the Kew Williams house on the west side of Lee Avenue. Take a look and see what is written on it. Beach history is unique. We had our own town—East Toronto circa 1888-1908. We had many recreation and amusement parks, including Victoria Park 1876-1896, Munro Park 1896-1906, Scarboro Beach Park 1907-1926, Kew Gardens 1878 to the present, Small’s Pond circa
1900, et cetera. No other area in the city had what we had. We have Balmy Beach Club and Lawn Bowling, Rugby, Canoeing, et cetera - one of the most decorated sports organizations in Canada. Kew Beach Lawn Bowling 120 years, Kew Beach Tennis Club, baseball in Kew Gardens which in its heyday drew close to 10,000 fans. Our library is over 100 years old. There are so many other events and places and people - this for another column. It is again up to you. What would you like to have—a Beach museum, more historic walks and talks? Again, take a look around and see if there is something unusual you would like us to answer about. An interesting building is our Synagogue. Beach Hebrew Institute has a historic plaque and an abundant amount of history. St. John’s, Norway, Anglican Church is one of the oldest churches and cemeteries in the east end. There are so many others but it is up to you, fellow Beachers. Let me know, please.

New dog association meets April 7, 2009
AFTER A recent change to the city’s Dogs in Park policy which proposed banning dogsfrom Blue Flag beaches year-round, local dog owners decided to form an official Toronto Beach Dog Association. While the ban was modified after a number of media saturated rallies to allow dogs on-leash to move between the Silver Birch and Kew Beach offleash areas in the winter, the association is holding a public meeting on April 14 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Community Centre 55, 97 Main St. Group organizer, Chris Yaccato, believes that dogowners need to band together to lobby the city for more dog-friendly policies. “Dog owners are heavy users of our parks and they have just as much right to use park land as anyone else. It’s for everyone,” said Yaccato. “However, people with dogs weren’t being consulted by the city...we want to work with city staff and politicians to improve parks.” He emphasized that nondog owners are also encouraged to join.
Yaccato said that the main issue at the moment is winter use of the Blue Flag beaches. “We only swim in the lake for two months a year in this climate.” He hopes that a good turnout for the meeting will result in a strong organization that can get local councillors and the mayor to listen to its concerns. The group also wants to make sure that current off-leash areas are preserved. For more information, you can email Yaccato at chrisyaccato@hotmail.com or join the Facebook group: Toronto Beach Dog Association.

Online map plugs historic pics of the Beach, Toronto Seniors club to start May 3 Continued from Page 1 “We’re looking at expanding our food program,” Benson noted. The church offers community lunches once a month, but the idea is to make this a twice-amonth feature. The Cliffside Seniors’ Club will also provide tips for nutritional eating and shopping and operate according to programming. “It’s not a full-time, Monday-to-Friday, 8-to-3 type of schedule,” Benson explained. The club will be introduced on Thursday, May 3, with a special free session of a caring for aging relatives program.

ABOUT 30,000 historic Toronto images, including hundreds taken right here in the Beach neighbourhood, have been plotted on a new interactive online map of the city. The Old Toronto map at www.oldtoronto. sidewalklabs.com is an initiative of Sidewalk Labs, an urban-innovation organization owned by Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company. It is the third city to get this treatment, following San Francisco and New York City. Computer programmer Dan Vanderkam pitched the San Francisco photo-map idea to his then-employer Google several years ago after having trouble looking up archival photos in the San Francisco Public Library’s digital archives. “It was frustrating to me… that it wasn’t being presented on a map,” said Vanderkam, who now works for Sidewalk Labs. “Being a software developer, I had a sense of how I could fix that problem,” he added. While the two previous incarnations began with photos from the public library system, all of the Toronto map’s 30,000 or so photos have been culled from the City of Toronto Archives, which includes north of 100,000 digitized images.

A Beacher who explores the OldTO map today might come across a snapshot of Woodbine Beach from a bright day in 1965, or a snowy Queen Street East and Lee Avenue as it appeared on Feb. 20, 1904. Vanderkam was part of a team that wrote programs to search archival images such as these and place them on maps based on info included with the photo, such as street names, cross streets, place names, and addresses. “Because a person hasn’t looked at all of these, we can’t necessarily guarantee that all are correctly placed,” he noted. Users can report mistakes on the website. Sidewalk Labs has received more than 1,000 pieces of feedback since launching the map on Tuesday, March 20. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback,” said Vanderkam. Visitors to the website can filter photos from 1850 to 2018 based on year taken and can also search addresses, neighbourhoods and ZIP codes. OldTO is a work in progress, and new images will be added to it over time. Vanderkam suggested the map shows that technology isn’t just about replacing the old with the new. “Tech also has tremendous power to help us connect with the past,” he said.

As an AFOL, Hayes is part of an online community that posts pictures of their latest projects to social media. In My Opinion
Our privacy depends on strong rules Nathaniel Erskine-Smith MP Beaches-East York
AS MORE of our lives and personal information continue to move online, it is critical that we have trust in both governments and companies to protect our privacy. In the wake of the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal, that trust has been eroded. Based on the testimony of whistleblower Christopher Wylie, Cambridge Analytica obtained information on more than 50 million Facebook users in order to build psychological profiles and target political ads. The case raises questions about the collection of our personal information, as fewer than 300,000 people downloaded an app through Facebook that permitted access to at least 50 million users’ profiles—almost all of whom had never given any consent. Moreover, data appears to have been collected under academic auspices but used otherwise. There are just as many questions about the appropriate use of such infor-
mation. If our personal information is collected for the purpose of a game or quiz, is it acceptable for such information to be used subsequently for other commercial or political purposes? The sheer scale of the information collection and manipulation, and the uses to which it was put (e.g. the Leave campaign in the Brexit referendum), also raise obvious concerns. What are our reasonable expectations of privacy in this context, and do rules of consent sufficiently protect us? It’s hard to believe that they do when a majority of Canadians admit to not reading privacy policies for mobile apps, and when a privacy sweep by 25 enforcement authorities found that privacy communications of internetconnected devices are generally poor and fail to inform users about exactly what personal information is being collected and how it will be used. As the vice-chair of our parliamentary committee on access to information, privacy, and ethics, I’ve been focused on privacy issues for much of the last two years. We’ve published reports to address how the government collects and uses our information, how it shares our information for national security purpos-
es, and how we can better protect our privacy at the US border. Most recently, we’ve published a report, Towards Privacy by Design, to improve privacy protections in the private sector. We recommended measures to recognize the principle of user ownership and control, including data portability, the right to be forgotten (especially for minors), and rules that require explicit opt-in consent for secondary purposes. And we recommended strengthening the Office of the Privacy Commissioner with new powers to audit privacy practices, make orders, and levy fines for breaches. In the wake of the massive Equifax data breach, we hauled executives before our committee to hold them to account for their negligence in protecting sensitive information. Over the coming weeks, we will be hearing from Facebook executives, Christopher Wylie, and other witnesses with knowledge of how our personal information is used and misused through large social media platforms. Our trust in these platforms, and in the growing world of internet-connected devices, depends on strong rules to protect our privacy.

One of the most famous “impostors” of all time was Anna Anderson who claimed to be Anastasia, the youngest daughter of Tsar (or Czar)

Her legend has spawned books, movies, even a new Broadway musical. Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar for playing Anna in “Anastasia” (1956). Fight for safer streets in the Beach and beyond our homes and businesses, and connect us to neighbours. Historically, humans were at the heart of street design - but for the last century, our streets have been primarily built around private vehicles. Designs incorporated wide lanes for automobiles, with little space for people. While this 1950s paradigm was the norm for many years, traffic engineers now know better. The law of induced demand states that when you increase the supply of something, people tend to want more of it. Simply put, you can’t build your way out of congestion by adding more lanes for traffic. In Toronto, many streets bear a closer resemblance to freeways
Kathryn Randle Board member Cycle Toronto Kathryn.n.randle@gmail.com WHEN WE think about public space, we conjure up images of our favourite parks, playgrounds, and beaches – Kew Gardens, Woodbine Beach, or Stephenson Park. Public space is vital to our quality of life. But it might surprise you to learn that our network of streets comprise nearly 75 per cent of Toronto’s public space. Fundamentally, streets are a platform to move – but they can also be places for community, commerce, and convening. Our streets lead to
than laneways. When you design streets like speedways, it encourages speeding. Our most vulnerable users find themselves in an environment where they are competing against automobiles, and the consequences are often grave. Research from the Bloomberg Institute of Road Safety show that there are more than 1.3 million pedestrian fatalities around the world, each year. That’s roughly one collision-related fatality every 30 seconds. Toronto is not immune from these trends. Our own challenges with road safety are particularly troubling. Although we’re only a few months into 2018, a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle every 3.5 hours. Toronto has recorded a
pedestrian fatality every 5-and-ahalf days. While it’s tempting to lay blame, point the finger, and pile on, fundamentally we can agree our road design isn’t working. So what are we going to do about it? If our goal is to move people safely, sustainably, and efficiently, we need to rethink the role of our street network and the hierarchy of user needs. We should evaluate streets by how they respond to the needs of our most vulnerable residents–our children, seniors, neighbours with additional accessibility requirements. This should be inform design and regulations. We need to fight for streets that put people first. With limited resources, let’s get
creative about infrastructure we already have and work to optimize it around the needs of people. Allocation of space, pedestrian realm, and multi-modal connectivity should be prioritized to improve the capacity of our street network to support safer, healthier, and more environmentally sensitive forms of mobility. Private vehicles will always play an important part of the transportation network in Toronto – but we can no longer ignore the fact that transit and active modes of transportation will become a bigger part of the mobility equation. Toronto is growing, and we need to find new ways to safely and efficiently navigate the city.

Make Ashbridge’s Bay Park a safe space for nature YAAAAA, SPRING is here! We’re all starting to come out of hibernation, along with our furry friends. We’re so fortunate to have Ashbridge’s Bay Park in our own backyard. The entrance from Woodbine Beach to east Ashbridge’s Bay Park has been enhanced, with the marshy area with the low grasses now being allowed to grow wild as it was years ago. The park supports many mammals, retiles, amphibians and birds. The Toronto Ornithological Club has recorded 250 different species here. They also list and advertise Ashbridge’s as one of the top 10 birding sites in Toronto. Flora and fauna need our protection to survive and thrive. Migratory birds need
suitable landing and resting spots, and those that breed here need safe areas to build a nest for their next family.
“” “Please have your pets on leashes …”
You can help make Ashbridge’s a safe place for nature. Please have your pets on leashes, as they should be year round, throughout the park. All users of the park,
including pets, should stay on the trails, especially along the shoreline, to encourage the growth of vegetation and the infant waterfowl. Dogs, especially off leash, are viewed as predators in the natural world. Responsible pet ownership will benefit the treasure we have here. Yelling and whistling to corral unleashed dogs is unnatural and irritating to both wildlife and people with or without dogs, who enjoy the peace and quiet of a nice walk, just like you. Neighbourly cooperation is good for everyone, and appreciated by all. For further information please look to the ProtectNatureTo.org website. Clyde Robinson

On page 3 of our last issue (March 20, 2018), we misstated the location of Protolab in the article “on Dawes Rd., a makerspace is born.” It is on Kelvin Avenue, not Dawes Road. As well, it is south of the Danforth rather than north, as previously reported. Read the updated article at www.beachmetro. com/2018/03/27/danforthmakerspace-is-born/ Also in the March 20 issue, we mistakenly referred to Sheila Blinoff as a “former Beach Metro editor of 40 years” on page 6, “Edgar Jaime Treadway 1936-2018.” In fact, Sheila was the General Manager for 40 years.

ntario hothouse tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and herbs are at their abundant peak now. Their fresh taste is perfect in Turkish recipes ready to perk up winter weary appetites. In Toronto, we have a wealth of Middle Eastern stores in the plazas located along Lawrence east of Pharmacy, where you can find any of the specialized Turkish ingredients such as, sumac, mint and pomegranate molasses, required in these recipes. Say “hello” to spring with the tantalizing taste of Turkey with these recipes from Foodland Ontario.
Turkish Tomato, Cucumber and Pepper Salad PHOTO: DAVID CORCORAN/FLICKR
This refreshing salad is common at every meal in Turkey. Here in Canada, it can be used as an accompaniment salad to meats or fish or as a tasty filling for pita topped with crumbled feta cheese. The Sumac called for in the following recipe is a ground spice made from red to purple berries from the bushes that grow abundantly in the Middle East and parts of Italy. It has a distinct tang and fruity taste which complements meat, fish and vegetable dishes. Sumac can be bought in Middle Eastern grocery stores like those found in the plazas that dot Lawrence Avenue East such as Arz Bakery (1909 Lawrence Ave. E., telephone 416-755-5084). In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add beef, garlic and onion. For about 7 minutes, cook while breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon until it is no longer pink. Add tomatoes, red pepper, tomato paste, cumin, paprika, salt, red pepper flakes and black pepper to taste. Bring to simmer, reduce heat to medium, stirring occasionally then more frequently near the end of cooking until tomatoes have completely broken down, about 15 minutes. Stir in the ¼ cup (50 mL) chopped parsley. Transfer to medium bowl and refrigerate while preparing dough. Flour hands and dough generously. On well-floured surface, roll dough to 8 by 16 inch (20 by 40 cm) rectangle. If dough bounces back, let rest a few minutes. Transfer to large parchment paper –lined baking sheet. Stir half of the feta into beef filling. Spread filling down middle of dough, leaving a 1-inch (2.5 m) border on all sides Roll in long sides and pinch to form edge. At short ends, squeeze and twist dough to make points (it should resemble a canoe.) Bake on lower rack in 400 F (200 C) oven until dough is browned, 25 to 30 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining feta, parsley, and cherry tomatoes. Cut into 8 strips. Serves 8.

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto
Anastasia as impostor Continued from Page 5 People want to believe in fairy tales. We all like happy endings, but DNA testing has proven that all of the Imperial family were killed in 1918. One person who knew all along that Anderson was an impostor was the Tsar’s sister, the Grand Duchess Olga. Olga escaped from Russia, later came to Canada and died here in 1960. Her last days were spent in a humble apartment above a beauty parlour at 716 Gerrard St E. A new Amazon anthology series called “The Romanoffs” was partly filmed in Toronto. It examines the lives of people around the world who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian Imperial family. Impostors? “Imposters” isn’t the only TV series to film on Queen St. E. The spies on “Taken” (sorry, no Liam Neeson and his very particular set of skills) work out of a 1905 heritage former bank building at 744 Queen St. E. You’ll pass it on the streetcar between the Moss Park

setting of “Kim’s Convenience” and the Leslieville storefront used for “Private Eyes”. Spring is here and time to get out those running shoes. For inspiration remember the late, great Roger
Bannister who passed away on March 3. The film “Four Minutes” (2005) showed runners along Woodbine Beach and used Birchmount Stadium as a location for the famous Oxford race in 1954 where Bannister ran the first sub-four minute mile. Bannister became a neurosurgeon and devoted his life to helping others. No impostor, he was the real deal. Spring also means hockey playoffs. Let’s hope the Leafs are not impostors. A century ago (March 30, 1918) Toronto was the very first NHL team to ever win Stanley Cup, a feat they haven’t repeated since 1967. Go, Leafs, go!

Bottoms Up
Wine gadgets, reviewed Edward Finstein Wine writer, author, TV and radio host, educator, judge winedoctor.ca thewinedoctor.blogspot.com @DrWineKnow facebook.com/EdwardDocFinstein
A
s a journalist I often get new wine paraphernalia sent to me for review. Some are useful, while others are downright ridiculous and totally not worth the money spent on them. Here are some of the newer toys on the market, from pop-up glasses to aerators.
WINE PEARLS: Ever reach for a glass of wine to find it warmish and wished it was cool in a hurry? Someone has come up with a solution: wine pearls. Simply pop these synthetic, re-useable ice cube look-alikes—kept in the freezer—right into your glass. Your vino will chill, and stay chilled, without dilution. Sounds good on paper, but honestly, having glacial objects floating around in my wine glass puts me off. What about swirling for aeration? Worse still, the frozen cubes might crack or break the glass. Doc’s rating: 2.5/5 POP-UP WINE GLASS: If you’re an active person who frequents concerts, festivals and picnics and likes to enjoy a glass of wine in the process, the pop-up wine glass may be for you. This folded up 5 cm high, plastic glass extends to 16 cm when full size. Rather unattractive and heavy in design! Plus, it’s made of plastic. No wine tastes good in that. Doc’s rating: 1.5/5 VENTURI WINE AERATOR: This gizmo is great. Simply pour wine straight from the bottle through the unit into a glass. It includes a non-drip stand and does a good job of aerating younger wines, especially reds, reducing tannins somewhat and opening up the flavours and nose. Doc’s rating: 5/5
AIR CORK: Here’s another gadget meant to protect leftover wine from oxidation. An inflatable balloon placed in the bottle and attached to a hose and pump supposedly keeps air at bay. Frankly, looks ridiculous, like you’re giving the bottle an enema. Doc’s rating 1/5 WINE THERMOMETER: Want to make sure your wine is at the correct drinking temperature? Try this wine thermometer that looks like a belt, with a digital display screen, wrapped around the outside of the bottle. Sounds good theoretically, but the bottle is often cooler or warmer than the contents, so not sure how accurate it is. Doc’s rating: 3/5 WINE CRADLE: Have you ever purchased wine abroad and then been left worrying about exactly how you’re going to safely pack it in your luggage without breakage or leakage? Enter the Wine Cradle. This compact, watertight, inflatable, plastic wine bag that holds up to a magnum-sized bottle will definitely do the job. Doc’s rating: 4/5 CORAVIN SYSTEM: Now you can sample some wine from a specific bottle without opening it or affecting its status. Coravin allows you to insert a very thin needle into the cork, pressurizing the bottle with argon and extracting a sample. It then reseals the bottle as if it had never been touched. The makers of Coravin claim the wine will continue to age, unaffected. I don’t know why anyone would want to do this, but if you keep extracting wine for the bottle, the volume within changes, thus altering its ageability. I’m not exactly sure about the needle holes either, or whether eventually air will get in! Doc’s rating: 3.5/5 THE CORKCICLE: Another unit to help keep your wine cool! A cork attached to a long incicle filled with gel that you keep in the freezer. It fits any standard wine bottle and will supposedly work. But it’s not very appetizing looking! Doc’s rating: 3/5

‘Anything that swims, f By Josh Sherman
TWENTY YEARS ago this March, the Avro CF-105 Arrow, a sophisticated Canadian-built fighter jet from the late’50s that never made it to full production, took its first flight. Sixty years later, the iconic jet lives on at the Danforth—albeit at a fraction of its original size. In the front window at Wheels & Wings Hobbies (1880 Danforth Ave.), three models of the aircraft, 1/72 the size of the flightworthy variety, were the centrepieces of a commemorative display last month at the hobby shop, a staple here for 11 years. Though the store doesn’t have any miniature Arrows for sale (the models, like the original, aren’t being produced) it has tens of thousands of other plastic replica planes, trains, automobiles, and military and sci-fi crafts. “Anything that swims, flies, rolls around—you can pretty much build a model of it,” said Kyle Hood, an employee who described his varied role here as “the friendly face behind the counter” on a recent visit. Hood, who started working at Wheels & Wings four-and-a-half years ago, is the one responsible for the latest display, which also presents a timeline rated to the ill-fated jet’s journey from advanced concept to victim of a Diefenbaker government funding cut. Each month, he changes up the front display. With the 60th anniversary of the Arrow’s first flight on March 25, the plane was an obvious candidate. The calendar date wasn’t the only reason,
though. “Depending on who you ask, the Arrow is famous—or infamous, legend, myth. Everyone’s got their own opinion,” he explained. But there is some consensus among aviation fanatics, Hood suggested. “Everyone can agree on it was cutting edge,” he said. “It was probably the best aircraft in the world at the time,” he said. While the Avro Arrow is not available here, that appears to be the exception, not the rule, at the hobby shop, which stocks about 30,000 products, from the kits themselves to addons such as decals and tools including

air brushes. “We are just [selling] plastic model kits and the stuff that goes with them: the paints, the glues, the tools, the accessories, the extra parts, things like that,” explained Hood. Classic cars like Ford Mustangs and military vehicles like the Spitfire are some of the store’s biggest sellers

Clockwise from above: Wheels and Win completed replicas, and the shop’s colle
in terms of kits, said Hood. However, Wheels & Wings co-founder Don McCowan said recently the store added Gundam figurines, part of a Japanese sci-fi series, and has started attracting a younger audience. “We’re seeing more and more parents bring their kids in to get them off the telephone,” said McCowan, who has operated the business since ‘86, when he launched it with the late Jim Mores on St. Clair Ave. E. on the advice of his accountant. “He said I had to find something that would make money,” recalled McCowan. Now partly retired, McCowan plans to cater more to the younger, lessexperienced audience by establishing a classroom in the shop’s basement. From there, students will be able to learn model-building skills from experts. The business is also in the process of setting up an e-store through its website, www.wheelswingshobbies. com. But until it is up and running, customers will have to continue getting lost among the shelves. “We’ve got a fair amount,” McCowan conceded modestly.

which have resulted, and more importantly, through the lessons which they teach; especially in human terms. The items in this exhibition attempt to illustrate such lessons by way of including objects which reflect some of the more interesting trends of the day: Virtual / Augmented Reality and Wearable devices. Stated differently, mainly things that are worn on the head, or on the hands. These objects are cultural artifacts. More to the point, ones which have had as much, or more influence on our lives as any of what we normally consider as falling into that category (music, theatre, architecture, dance, cinema, literature …). If this exhibit does nothing other than help convince the visitor of this, and better equip them to think about them in such a light, then it has served its purpose. do not like “trendy,” except maybe as a joke. Like avocado toast, big plates/small portions, kale, or artisan anything. You’d think something as straightforward as gardening would be immune to trends, but not so. We’ve had the tea-rose trend, the clematis trend, the herb-garden trend, the containergardening trend, the cottage garden trend and, for a long time now, the perennial trend. Back when I started gardening, it was petunias, marigolds and impatiens. The only trendy thing was their colour.
Its hard to describe, but it’s definitely not laid out like a traditional flower bed or border.
Seeing plants as communities Recently I heard another proponent of this kind of naturalized garden speak: Roy Diblik, a gardener and part-
they were meant to live in. “Let plants grow together and intermingle,” he says, adding that no plant wants to grow all alone, surrounded by bark mulch. The easiest way to outdo weeds, he advises, is simply to cover the earth with carefully chosen plants. This lets us be gardeners, not labourers or even landscapers – a favourite theme that he returns to throughout his talks and writings.

We expect more from our garden But we’ve grown more sophisticated since then. We expect more of our gardens than simple prettiness. We want them to be sustainable (able to survive without extensive applications of fertilizer and pesticides), water-wise and, whenever possible, natural. Standard design principles like short stuff in back, tall stuff in front, and Gertrude Jekyll’s waves of colour are taking a backseat to the new perennial garden. That doesn’t have a standard name yet. Some refer to it as Oudolf-style gardening, after Dutch designer Piet Oudolf, who designs what I would call well-planned meadow gardens. (See the garden on the east side of the Toronto Botanical Garden for the best example locally.) Lots of grasses, interspersed with clumps of lovely, but not strictly showy, perennials.

Plant communities can resemble a subtle patchwork pattern. ner in Northwinds Farm in Wisconsin, U.S. (That’s close enough to our own climate to make his ideas useful here in Toronto.) He doesn’t have a landscape or horticulture degree, but he does have “40 years of plants speaking to me, sharing how they live on the earth.” This may sound whimsical, but he sees this intimate knowledge as the key to successful gardens. “They’re the same as you and I…. They live in happy social communities. How did that change? How did they become dependent on us and on so many products?” Diblik’s aim is to make our gardens more comfortable to the natural communities (or neighbours, or groupings)
Two things to know about them The ideas are a little shocking at first. But Diblik is nothing like a crusader or preacher. He looks a bit like a kindly Santa Claus and speaks tenderly and lovingly about plants as living beings. The ones we buy in gallon containers are merely “children,” he points out. We can’t just plop them in wherever they look good when we take them home. Continued on Page 20

Who can ever forget the Willow and Pine Groceteria? Well, admittedly, I have a vague reminiscence of this variety store, but not so for Blandford Gates, who captured this image in the spring of 1970. I
’m one heck of a Hank Williams fan, so I reckon I just had to write about his namesake currently singin’ the lovesick blues down at Beaches Animal Hospital (BAH)! Poor ole’ Hank and his faithful human servant, at least up until just recently, had to part ways after a string of bad luck came calling. His dear and doting owner was forced to move to a residence that doesn’t allow pets, even ones as charming as our Hank. That’s when the mighty neighbourly folks at BAH saved the day and the cat! They run a pet hospital just about bubbling over with down-home hospitality! Now in its 45th year since becoming the first veterinary hospital in our neck of the woods, BAH continues to serve our beloved pets, including some that are in search of new love! There are always a handful of homeless (but not hopeless!) cats-in-waiting at this hospital with heart! Some have ailments that need tending to, and some are just plain old love sick. Either way, they earn their keep by being the best darned kitty-cat candy-stripers a hospital could ever ask for! Although I suppose they don’t take their jobs all that seriously. When Hank first appeared on the scene, he clearly preferred exploring than doing whatever candy-stripers are supposed to do. He was so mystified by the stairs leading up to the second floor that he’d just sit on the first step and daydream a spell, hoping an idea would come to him as to what he should do next. But now that he’s got the whole stair thing figured out, he’s up and down like a yoyo. Despite the spare tire he’s working on getting rid of with the help of a fine diet of wholesome vittles and daily stretches, Hank can move like the wind and will high-tail it after anyone he figures will give him plenty of lovin’ in the form of head pats. Sometimes, humans don’t always get the hint though. In those cases, he doles out a friendly head butt or two and that usually does the trick. When he’s had his fill of tickles between the ears, handy Hank gets back to his job inspecting every delivery that comes through the door. He has a real passion for cardboard boxes. Most of all, Hank loves to express himself in song! He’s got a talented set of lungs but no lead singer worth their weight in fool’s gold would ever expect Grand Ole Opry style stardom without a pair of upstanding backup singers! Miss Gracie is a pleasantly plump 10-years-young brown tabby with a face as sweet as honey and a glorious gift of gab! She wound up at BAH after a marriage break-up. Being a non-stop chatterbox, singing comes naturally for this gabby tabby. She’d love to sing solo for you though, should you be on the prowl for one perky people-lovin’ magpie to fill your home with toe-tappin’, finger-snappin’ melodies! Miss Shirley is an unlucky-in-love gray domestic shorthair beauty a wee bit younger than Gracie. A couple Good Samaritans and clients of BAH found her discarded on the side of the road like yesterday’s trash, but they knew she’d have something to sing about before long once the hospital staff took her in and did their magic. They were right! Shirley’s best singing happens when she’s on your lap. That’s when she breaks out in purrs so sugary sweet she’ll melt your ever-lovin’ heart! Nevertheless, poor Miss Shirley has been at BAH the longest after striking out twice at adoption.
Quality Workmanship Customer Service
Maycock Contracting A starry-eyed Hank Williams. First time, it was allergies. Second time, it was on account of she doesn’t much like the company of other cats. Like Gracie, she’d really love to sing solo. They say third time’s a charm so we’ve got fingers, toes and tails tightly crossed for the most adorable, playful lap-yodeler this side of heaven! As for Mr. Hank Williams, well he’s as easy-going as a duck on water! In other words, he’s happy to share his home on the range with another friendly feline if you’ve got the gumption to be chief, cook and cat-bowl washer to more than one. So why not go ahead and put the coffee pot on and the biscuits in the oven ‘cause if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creeks don’t rise ‘twixt now and then, Hank will be home to you in two shakes of a frisky cat’s tail!

3HL Tour finale to hit Ted Reeve rink By Josh Sherman
AN UP-AND-COMING semi-professional Canadian sports league that combines elements of NHL overtime, the PGA tour and the NCAA’s March Madness college basketball touches down at Ted Reeve Arena (175 Main St.) later this month. The 3HL Tour is the brainchild of Bluffs-born Justin Fox, who found inspiration in the three-on-three overtime play that has been a fixture in NHL hockey since the 2015–16 season. “I just thought, wow, this would be amazing if there was a league that was exclusively, or only, three-on-three. It would be intense,” said Fox, who incorporated the 3HL in November 2015. Now wrapping up its third season of play, the tourney-based league is hosting its final event, the Champions Cup, on Saturday, April 14, at Ted Reeve Arena starting at noon. “Anything could happen,” added Fox. That is in part thanks to tweaked rules. Icing and off-side aren’t called, and an entire game lasts only 14 minutes. The tournament’s format, which draws from NCAA basketball, also adds to the unpredictable nature. All 12 teams are invited, but only eight can go on to play in the championship tournament for a $15,000 main prize. Like in March Madness, there will be a “play-in” elimination round. Teams ranked fifth and lower will compete in knockout games for the right to join the

Toronto Bees captain Brandon Turner (right), who grew up playing at Ted Reeve, on the ice versus the Hamilton Tigers during 3HL Tour action. top four clubs in the 3HL Championship Cup beginning at 3 p.m. Ahead of the contest, Brandon Turner, captain of the second-seed Toronto Bees, said his team is logging plenty of ice time. “We’re on the ice all the time,” said Turner, who liked what he saw when he found out about the league via social media. “It’s extremely fast,” he said of the gameplay. “You really have the whole ice to work with.” One of Fox’s goals with the league is to provide opportunities for players like Turner who, though talented, aren’t lacing up the skates for an NHL team. “The idea of the 3HL is that we be-
come that true pro hockey league… for Canadians to play pro hockey right here in Canada,” said Fox. The league is currently limited to Ontario but has already attracted former NHL talent, including one-time Edmonton Oiler Jason Williams, who plays for the ninth-place London 3’s. There are plans to expand to 33 tournaments next year, kind of like pro tennis or golf seasons, except competitions are over in three hours. Adult tickets are $19.99 and admission for anyone 17 and under is $9.99. Tickets can be purchased at www.3hltour.com/tickets/

Garden Views
What we can learn from Rob Diblik Continued from Page 15 If we’re to be real gardeners, he passionately believes that we have to understand two important things about plants: how quickly they mature (their growth rate) and what their growth habit is (their height and width). Well. That’s a big job. I certainly wouldn’t try to learn that about all possible plants for my garden. But if I get to know a plant “in a loving and intimate way,” as Diblik memorably puts it, I can blend and mix them a lot more successfully than I have in the past. (For one thing, I wouldn’t have my precious Bloomerang lilac crammed up against an unfortunate weigela.)
Blending plants like watercolours As for colour and texture, Diblik

uses a “watercolour style of planting,” inspired by the patterns in Impressionist pictures. He loves blending salvias in shades of purple, lavender and white to make a highlight in a garden.
“
“There are no rules in horticulture …” – Rob Diblik
Another favourite is parthenium integrifolium, a tall, white puffy flower that blooms all summer and goes well with many other colours and shapes. He uses plenty of white and purple
echinaceas in many of his gardens and plants stachys officinalis ‘Hummelo’ in clumps or strips. (The stachys has tall purple flower spikes and could substitute for towering Echinacea in smaller gardens.) For challenging dry shade like ours in Beach gardens, Diblik said one word: carex (sedge). These spreading, grass-like plants have lived in plant communities for years, he says, and recommends mixing two or three colours rather than laying down a monocolour carpet. As I mentioned, Diblik is no crusader, and you’ll find native and nonnative plants in his list of favourites. “There are no rules in horticulture,” he declares, “just take the time to get to know your plants and understand them.” For details on Roy Diblik’s gardening style and recommendations, see his book, “The Know Maintenance Garden,” published by Timber Press.
