Sixteen-year-old drowns saving others By Susan Legge

A TEENAGE boy from Toronto died a hero earlier this month after diving into the water at Woodbine Beach in an attempt to help save a mother and son in distress. The teen, identified by Toronto District School Board as Wexford Collegiate Performing School for the Arts student Kyle Howard-Muthulingam, tried to swim to a restricted area on the western edge of the beach to help the duo, along with a 15-year-old girl and several other beach-goers. According to witnesses, multiple lifeguards rushed to the area, which is known for its strong undertow, and rescued five people from the water before emergency responders arrived minutes later. Police said of the five people rescued, four were taken to hospital, and boats from the Toronto Police Service emergency marine unit and a helicopter from Trenton’s Royal Canadian Air Force were called in to search the area for any additional victims. The 15-year-old girl recovered in hospital after arriving in serious condition, and PHOTO: GOFUNDME Kyle died later that day. A GoFundMe web page has been set up Wexford student Kyle by a contributor named Aly King. It states H owa rd - M u t h u l i n - that donations will help support Kyle’s gam died a hero. family during this tragic time.

Thirteen people were injured and two people were killed, including Beach resident Reese Fallon and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis from Richmond Hill. On August 22, a fundraiser for the Reese Fallon Legacy Scholarship and Fallon family will be held at Bob Acton Park. Councillor McMahon recounts her successes and surprises By Fiona Bramzell

WHEN MARY-MARGARET McMahon steps down as Beaches—East York city councillor for Ward 32 at the end of November, it’s no exaggeration to say that it is a more community-driven and culturally rich area than it was at the start of her time in office. To celebrate and honour Councillor McMahon’s eight years as our city councillor, Beach Metro News sat down with her for a Q&A session to get the scoop on what she believes she has achieved during this time, her hopes for the future of the ward and what she really thinks about life at City Hall... BMN: Kicking things off with the most recent event to affect city

council, how do you feel about the recent decision to cut the number of councillors serving the city? MMM: It’s completely unrealistic for a city the size of Toronto and ridiculous to make the comparison to the number of MPPs and MPs working at the provincial and federal level. Not only is it unjust, it is also unfair—I already get an average of 150 emails per day from constituents—telling us that we will simply have to ‘work harder’ is not a solution and the residents are the ones who will ultimately suffer. BMN: What do you see as your biggest achievement during your time in office? MMM: There are a number of things that I’m proud of, particularly in terms of empowering people,

encouraging community groups such as the ‘Friends Of’ neighbourhood parks and residents associations. But if I had to choose one thing, it would be the push for laneway housing with the Laneway Suites Policy which provides more rental and housing options for the neighbourhood. BMN: What changes would you make at city hall now you’ve seen the way it works? MMM: Well, obviously I would want to impose the two-term limit on all councillors as I’ve done for myself. I would also like to see council meetings run more efficiently by making speaking times shorter— while there is a limit in place now, councillors inevitably run over their allotted time which only adds to the often unnecessar-

ily long council sessions. I think it would be a good idea if councillors took the time to visit other wards too, to get a sense of some of the issues that their fellow councillors are dealing with. BMN: Speaking of the two-term limit, do you regret imposing this rule on yourself? MMM: While there are certainly lots of things that I would still want to get done in the ward, I do believe in leaving the party while I’m still having fun (laughs)! Leaving is certainly bittersweet but I do believe in electoral reform and, as such, need to be the change I want to see. BMN: Was there anything about life at city hall that surprised you? When one shop closes, another one opens on this strip of Kingston Road By Marjan Asadullah

SEVERAL BUSINESS owners that have been staples on the Kingston Road strip for decades closed their shops earlier this month, leaving loyal customers and neighbours wondering what this part of the street will look like in the years ahead. Some shop owners, many of whom live in the neighbourhood, have seen firsthand the significant changes on the strip. The shops closing include Kingston Barber Shop, whose owner, Sam, has been operating his popular shop for 44 years, Fred’s Sporting Ltd. which closed

after 46 years last month, and Beaches Bake Shop, which has been open for 12 years. Some of the business owners have retired, while others have moved on to other ventures. Each of these businesses has a reputation for providing excellent service and had a loyal clientele. For example, Kingston Barber Shop (or Kingston Hair Styling depending on which sign you read), is still receiving fivestar reviews on Yelp. Although it’s sad to see these the long-standing businesses leaving the neighbourhood, it is not all bad news says Scarboro Music store manager Josh Dielaman. He believes that when old businesses leave, new ones soon come along. “This neighbourhood is supportive of local businesses and that is why Sam and Fred did well and stayed in the area for so long. Now that they’ve retired and moved on, new businesses will take over,” says Dielaman. The popular music store he works at has been operating for over 60 years on the corner of Kingston Road and Victoria Park Avenue. “The only downside to this is not being able to see the same faces every day in the area. You get used to seeing them around for years and now it is going to be different, but there will be new opportunities and it is a positive thing for the neighbourhood,” he said. Sharon Smyl, the owner of

Shown in front of his famous local store in February of this year, Fred shovels some snow. Andrew Adams, who has known Fred since the ’70s, posted this photo on Facebook to share his experience with the popular store owner. A community staple, Fred is known in the neighbourhood by his first name only.

Collected Joy and the head of the Kingston Road Village Business Community which helps local businesses stay connected, is also a longtime shop owner and resident of the Beach and shares the same view as Dielaman. She says the neighbourhood is “thriving” because customers choose to shop locally and the strip has seen a significant growth in the number of local businesses that have opened in the last year. “We are seeing a great evolution in the neighbourhood. The community is changing and offering new opportunities to people because local businesses are being sup-

ported by local people,” said Smyl. As of now, Fred’s store has been sold and is currently under construction for what is expected to be a fruit market, said Smyl, and Sam’s store is up for lease. In the last couple of months, Kingston Road has become home to some new stores such as the Big Carrot, Freshii, and Chocolatta to serve the community. The decades of service these proprietors have given to their community will be remembered fondly by many. As Smyl refers to them, they are “pockets of goodness” in a big growing city like Toronto.

residents, have noticed that people are leaving excessive amounts of garbage on the beach and don’t pick up before they leave. As a result, Jones and her boyfriend Aaron Russell starting cleaning up the area since noticing the mess. On Canada Day alone, they collected over 45 trash bags of garbage she said. On a regular day, they have a minimum of 18 trash bags once they’ve finished cleaning up. Jones, a resident of the Beach neighbourhood for 28 years, is concerned that people are not taking care of this beach area properly. “The Beach is a beautiful place, and it’s disgusting that people are leaving all kinds of trash behind them. Everybody wants to use the place and when I’m down there, I spend at least half an hour to clean up before I can enjoy it,” she said. Since taking up this

cleaning initiative, Jones has found everything from pizza boxes and beer bottles to broken glass and cigarette butts and boxes. She has also found trash shoved between rocks and buried in the sand. Beach resident Iain Bateman has also taken up the initiative to clean up this area of the beach, and says there is always a mess to deal with when he goes there. “I go down there [secret beach] every week and every time there is something to pick up. I can easily fill up eight bags of garbage,” said Bateman. People from other parts of the city, such as Scarborough, North York and the west end, come to “secret beach” and Jones has not seen an improvement in how they treat the beach either. “I just want people to look after the beach and teach their children to take care of it because I’m not seeing any of that right now.”

Residents say ‘secret beach’ is a not-so-secret mess By Marjan Asadullah

AMANDA JONES used to visit “secret beach” when she was in high school. It was a secluded sandy place near the water where she could take time to relax. Today, Jones still likes to visit the beach except now she takes multiple trash bags with her to clean up before she can enjoy it. This part of the Beach is a not-so-secret location to most local residents, particularly those looking for a quiet place away from crowded beaches during the day. It’s also a popular hangout in the evening, mainly for teens, too. Located on the shoreline just east of the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, Jones has noticed a significant difference in how she enjoyed her time when she was young versus how people are doing it now. She, and many other Beach

Beaches International Jazz Festival marks 30 years of fun By Susan Legge

THE BEACH community came alive to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Beaches International Jazz Festival—one of the few remaining free jazz festivals in the world—with close to one million attendees this year. “The first year in Kew Gardens we had 5,000 people,” said Lido Chilelli, the founder of the festival. “Each decade, hundreds of thousands of visitors have joined the celebration. This year we had over 750,000 attend.” There’s a handful of staff and dozens of volunteers who help make the festival what it is, said Chilelli, and the nearly month-long festival includes different features throughout east Toronto, such as the Big Band Stage, the OLG Main Stage and the Sing! Stage in Woodbine Park. The Sounds of Leslieville and Riverside Block Party takes place just west of The Beach, but which aspect of the festival that is Chilelli’s favourite? “Streetfest,” he said. Streetfest brings three evenings of music, food and fun to Queen Street East, which is closed to vehicular traffic to make way for the festivities. “The Beaches International Jazz Festival provides an opportunity for emerging artists to be recognized nationwide,” said Chilelli. “It also provides millions of dollars of economic impact to the Beach community and the City of Toronto. It’s a world-renowned institution.” Next year’s Jazz Festival takes place from July 5-28.

Paddle your way to a healthier mind By Lauren Schell

WE ALL recognize the calming effects of being near water. We all understand, if only instinctively, that being near nature is good for us. That’s why we live here, in the Beach—it’s not just about million dollar houses and good schools—it’s about being outdoors and participating in physical activities, like watersports and activitives that allow us to be close to the water, such as running along the boardwalk, beach volleyball and paddleboarding. We have instant access to a therapeutic outlet, and now there is scientific research out there that supports the idea that living near the water is actually good for your mental health. Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson coined the term “biophilia” to describe his theory that humans genetically have an instinctive bond with nature and the organisms we share our

world with. His theory hypothesizes that because we’ve evolved in nature (and not the concrete city scapes we call home now), we have an innate connection with natural settings. When we get close to water, our DNA feels like it’s going home when it gets there. Toronto is arguably all concrete and skyscrapers but being near trees and places such as the Scarborough Bluffs and Lake Ontario reminds us of where we are really from. Recently, the rise of research on the health benefits of being near water just further supports our need to be around the essential natural element. In fact, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols coined the term “Blue Mind” in his book of the same name, which supports the idea that living closer to water is better for the environment and healthier for humans as well. The “blue mind” Nichols

refers to are the neurological, psychological and emotional changes in our brains which come about when we are close to water. Nichols draws on science and art, hard data and anecdotal, and plenty of experience, to explain our “blue mind” in detail. Not just what it is, but how we can enter into this state and—perhaps most important—why we should do so. Those emotional, behavioral, psychological and physical connections are what make us so enchanted with water. Nicol is a marine biologist whose passion for our planet’s water goes far beyond the classroom. The Beach is the best place to live in Toronto for your well-being. That may be a bold statement, however after living here for the past summer I will firmly stand behind my statement. The sandy beaches are fantastic, and our proximity to water makes us happier and healthier. Do you notice how

you feel when you’re near the water? The calming effects of the waves gently lapping the shore, the soft sand under your feet? It’s an instant mood booster. I’ve spent the past summer teaching students how to paddleboard on the water and after we head back to land the smiles are always bigger and brighter than they were post-water. If you’re a Beacher, make sure you take advantage of this incredible resource we have right at our back door! Lauren Schell is a Beachbased writer, artist and paddle board teacher with the Kew-Balmy based SUPGirlz. Lauren can be found on the water, painting or searching for the best cup of coffee the city has to offer.

Reader says ‘the better way’ means an e-bike RE: THREE buses to travel 8 km. I’m on Midland at Kingston Road. Currently, Toronto bike stores are selling electric powerassisted bicycles which can be had with a good credit rating or a parent’s co-signature. Monthly loan payments are about half of a monthly TTC Metropass. You can go directly from A to B to C with zero waiting time. Available 24/7, there’s always a free seat and with battery powerassistance in Canada you can reach a maximum speed of 32 km/h. Quicker that public transit and faster than automobiles too because they’re usually sitting clogged bumper-to-bumper in traffic. Today, recent reports suggest there are already over 200 million electric bikes in China. Last year in Europe, the Germans bought over 700,000.

One-in-four bikes in “bike-friendly” Holland now now power-assisted. Sweden is offering rebates to its population to buy electric bikes. Closer to home, the city of Laval in Quebec (think of it as Scarborough is to Toronto) is offering a $400 rebate to offset the purchase of electric bikes. This will of course only interest folks who like to get around quicker while saving lots of money (wink). Unfortunately, public transit vehicles like subways and buses and streetcars (and cars) should be consider “stone age” in urban transportation terms. [Smile] Lock Hughs on Midland Avenue

MMM: Unfortunately, yes – I was completely surprised by the lack of civility and animosity between councillors at times. And, I was hugely disappointed by the amount of partisanship that occurs. However, I was also pleasantly surprised by just how hard the staff at city hall work—for those of you out there who thinks they do nothing, that couldn’t be further from the truth! BMN: Is there anything that you would have done differently over the course of your terms? MMM: I’m happy to say that I really achieved much of what I set out to do. I always refer to myself as an ‘accidental politician’ even though it’s in my blood—my father was the mayor of Collingwood—I never imagined that I would run for office. But, having always been deeply involved and passionate about the community it seemed natural for me to take on this role and, as such, I do feel

I’ve been able to make a real difference. To answer your question, probably one thing I would like to have done is to help people understand the way the city works, but other than that I would say I’m happy with what I have been able to do. From preserving our heritage with the laneway namings, street beautification projects, traffic calming initiatives, creation of community housing and emergency shelters, and advocating for youth involvement such as the Toronto Youth Council, I certainly feel that my hardworking team and I have made a real impact on the community. BMN: What do you see for the future of the Beach area? How would you like to see it grow and evolve? MMM: I would like to see it become a vibrant main street and during my time in office there were a number of changes I pushed for in order for it to become just that. We were behind the

lifting of the 30-year old size restriction on restaurants which attracted more restaurateurs to open in the area, we approved more patio permits and pushed to repeal the vacant property tax rebate which, essentially, rewarded property owners for keeping their storefronts empty. I would like to see a continuation in the growth of farmers’ markets, recreation hubs such as those proposed for the Ted Reeves Arena area and anything that brings more people to the neighbourhood, like Live Nation’s exciting new live music venue coming to the former racetrack at Queen and Woodbine. BMN: And finally, what will MM be doing next? MMM: Taking it easy! I’m still in office until the end of November so I can’t relax just yet, but I’ll certainly be taking some time to travel, become reacquainted with my dog who probably doesn’t even remember who I am (laughs) and just spending

time with friends and family. Having said that, I will always be involved in some capacity with the community and pushing for a better environment, safer streets and the empowerment of our residents. This is truly a unique area—I’ve always said it’s like a small town in a big city—and it’s been an honour and a pleasure to serve over the past eight years.

modelled on Toronto. Batman (1939) and Wonder Woman (1941) soon followed, but the first superhero film adapted from a comic book character was the serial “Adventures of Captain Marvel” in 1941. Captain Marvel became the most popular superhero of the 1940s by giving kids a character they could relate to. The story combined the superpower adventures of the “Man of Steel” with the wish fulfillment fantasy of a 14 -year-old foster kid named Billy Batson. By shouting “Shazam!” Billy magically transforms into a grown-up caped crusader fighting evil-doers. Think “Big” meets “Superman.” Last February around Valentine’s Day I was walking in my Upper Beach neighbourhood when I noticed a Philadelphia police car parked on Lyall Ave. Hmmm. Curiosity didn’t help the cat, but I put on my Sherlock cap and looked around. A beautiful home had a lawn and porch full of Christmas decorations. A Christmas movie perhaps? The next day there were

Bernie Fletcher arm, summer nights are a good time to watch a popcorn flick in the park. You can catch the 2017 film, Wonder Woman, at Kew Gardens at dusk on August 29, the last of Movie Nights in the Beach Village. Popcorn is included! Kids of all ages love superheroes who defeat the villains in modern-day fairy tales. In troubled times of uncertainty it is reassuring to believe that good triumphs over evil. What youngster doesn’t wish they could stand up to bullies? Superhero comic books came out during the chaos of the late 1930s with the Depression, the rise of Fascism in Europe and the Second World War. Toronto-born Joe Shuster co-created Superman in 1938. The Metropolis he drew was

BEACH METRO NEWS

A home on Lyall Avenue in the Beach could be playing the part of a Philadelphia residence in an upcoming movie about Captain Marvel, says Fletcher, who captured this photo of a faux Philly police car last February. the usual white film trucks and orange pylons. I asked a worker, “What’s filming?” The answer was “York, a TV pilot.” Okay, that’s the most fake title I could imagine. Blockbuster movies routinely use an alias or secret identity just like the superheroes themselves. It’s been 80 years since Superman flew onto comic book pages, but reporter Lois Lane can’t figure out he is Clark Kent? (I take off my glasses and all I do is bump into things.) ‘York” also went by the working title “Franklin” but I found out that Philadelphia is the setting for “Shazam!” which is really a Captain Marvel movie. Got it? “Shazam!” also filmed at a mall with Christmas decorations. Taxis in scenes had the Philly area code of 215. When I looked closely at one of my photos, I noticed the name “Batson” on the front mailbox of the Christmas house. Captain Marvel is the alter ego of Billy Batson. That clinched it. But don’t tell anyone. Shhhh! It’s a big secret. Fans will have to wait until April 2019 for the film’s release, but you can check out the teaser trailer which shows Billy confronted by bullies at Danforth Collegiate. He runs to the Greenwood station and makes it onto the “Philly” subway. A wizard gives Billy the magic word “Shazam” and he turns into Captain Marvel. The trailer shows a light-hearted, comedic version of a DC Comic universe after many dark adaptations. In the grim early days of the Second World War, a student at Danforth Technical School (now Collegiate and Technical Institute) wanted to do his part. Leo Bachle dreamed of being a hero. With a buddy he joined the Canadian Army, but Leo was sent home when the Forces found out his age. The war years were the

“Golden Age” of comic books, but in 1941 the Canadian government put an embargo on American comics. Here was an opportunity for Canadian stories like “Nelvana of the Northern Lights” which actually pre-dated Wonder Woman as a female superhero. One day in 1941 Leo was looking at comic books when a boss at Bell Features asked him what he thought of the drawings. The brash teen replied, “I could do better”. The adventures of “Johnny Canuck” debuted in February of 1942. Johnny was a fearless air force captain who didn’t have any superpowers, but fought the Nazis, even punching Hitler. Leo Bachle drew his hero in his own likeness and took inspiration from the students and teachers at Danforth. “We were celebrities. I drew Johnny Canuck and he had my face, and everybody at my school read it and I was popular. I drew the teachers and all the kids read the books to see whose name I was going to mention.” (From the Toronto Star, 1971) The history of our comic book artists is told in the documentary “Lost Heroes: The Untold Story of Canadian Superheroes” (2014) which was shown as part of the recent Reference Library exhibit “Alter Ego: Comics and Canadian Identity”. Bachle’s parents lived for many years on Kent Road,

near Coxwell Avenue. Leo went on to become a nightclub entertainer, changing his name to Les Barker. He died at Scarborough Grace Hospital in 2003. If he were alive, I am sure he would get a kick out of Billy Batson fighting bullies on the steps of his old alma mater Danforth Collegiate. Every kid’s fantasy is to be the hero of their own adventure. In “Shazam!” a friend asks Billy, “If you could have one superpower, what would you pick?” Flight? Immortality? Superhuman strength? Skipping a math test? (My only power is the ability to make a donut disappear.) What would you choose? We do have real-life heroes here in Toronto. First responders and those that run toward danger to help others are super!

Jonathan Barker’s unique career forged his family’s love of water By Beach Metro Staff

BEACH RESIDENT and founder of SK Films, Jonathan Barker passed away on July 5 from cancer, surrounded by his wife Wendy and children Scott, Tyler, Georgia, Alex and Caleigh. Leaving behind a legacy of awardwinning theatrical IMAX, television and digital media productions that specialized in natural history and science related stories, Jonathan was a long-time, proud Beach resident who loved nature, and in particular water of any kind. As a career, Jonathan had many, including founding SK Films 20 years ago along with Bob Kerr, cofounder of IMAX Corporation. Jonathan was later joined by his wife Wendy MacKeigan who is now CEO. SK Films is a leader in the production business, garnering multiple awards, and is based in the Port Lands area of East Toronto. A former actor, theatre producer, lead singer of an R&B band, accomplished tennis player and skier, Jonathan brought a broad perspective and great passion to all things and was known for his humorous stories, sharp banter and interesting conversa-

tions, always bringing laughter and fun wherever he went. Whenever he could, Jonathan would also take scuba diving trips with his family or as part of his films and explore the ocean and its wondrous marine life. He inspired two of his sons, dedicated environmentalists, to also become filmmakers and he executive produced their award-winning, eco-adventure series The Water Brothers. Jonathan was proud that they taught him so much more about the ocean and freshwater ecosystems having covered all the leading-edge water stories of our era including issues affecting the health of The Great Lakes like invasive Asian Carp, algae blooms, plastic pollution and climate change. He felt blessed that his unique career allowed him to travel to exotic places like the Moroccan desert, the heart of the Amazon rainforest, to the monarch butterfly sanctuaries in the remote mountains of Mexico, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and much more. But despite these adventures, his favorite place by far to relax was in the wilds of Georgian Bay. In the summer, he and his family went to their off-grid, island paradise near Pointe au Baril on Georgian Bay

as often as possible. Whether it was seeing waves crash against the ancient rocks on the sun sparkled, open bay, observing the windswept pines grow over the years, spotting bears swimming between the islands or majestic bald eagles flying overhead, or taking his small laser out for a sail, Jonathan felt Georgian Bay was his spiritual home. And, of course, the waters that flow through Georgian Bay are the very same waters that flow from his birthplace of Chicago, past his Beach home on Neville Park and eventually through the St. Lawrence and past Montreal where he grew up. It was cathartic for Jonathan and Wendy to retreat from their hectic lives as natural history IMAX filmmakers and distributors whose productions have entertained millions of people around the world, especially children, about the wonder and joys of nature and the need to understand and protect it for the welfare of everyone. There is no better way to honour his remarkable legacy than to give back to the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay, said his son Tyler Mifflin, and in particular to the work of Georgian Bay Forever, a charity dedicated to scientific research and public education surrounding Georgian Bay’s aquatic ecosystem.

THE TORONTO International BuskerFest is back in the Beach at Woodbine Park for the Labour Day weekend, and appears to be settling in as a local fixture that neatly bookends the summer with the Jazz Festival. The open-air event, which brings in street performers from around the world, is by far the largest of its type in Canada and a heavy hitter on the international festival circuit, too. When BuskerFest made its debut in 2000 at Nathan Phillips Square, the 25 performers drew a crowd of around 25,000. Last year’s edition, held in Woodbine Park, saw about 150,000. This year BuskerFest aims to have 200,000 people at the park to take in the more than 100 performers, many of which are twists on traditional circus acts such as jugglers, acrobats, magicians and contortionists. For an arts festival, BuskerFest has an unusual history: It was started by Epilepsy Toronto, a charity that supports people with epilepsy and their families through a wide range of programs. It is the only major such festival in the world started, organized and run by a community charity, says Melanie Carrey, BuskerFest

communications coordinator at Epilepsy Toronto And it’s been something of a nomadic event in Toronto, too. From Nathan Phillips Square, it moved to the St. Lawrence Market area in 2003, and after outgrowing the neighbourhood, migrated to the Yonge Street strip in 2013. Three years later it moved to its new home in the Beach. Epilepsy Toronto executive director Geoff Bobb has been enthusiastic about the Woodbine Park location. “The Beach is the ideal home for BuskerFest; family oriented, oozing with character, and a long-time champion of the arts,” adding that the large open spaces provide a better view of the shows and the park location reduces the chance that children could get lost in congested streets. That helps contribute to a less harried, and more relaxed vibe, Bobb said. The festival has always drawn from acts that perform globally, earning their livings through street performance events around the world. This year BuskerFest is welcoming performers from such countries as Australia, Ireland, Japan, U.K. Russia, U.S., Italy, and Israel. Many of them

SAY CHEESE Just as there’s an app for everything, there seems to be a festival for everything, too, and this year Buskerfest is getting a bit cheesy as it partners with the Mac and Cheese Festival. The event boasts the distinction of being “North America’s largest food festival celebrating everything mac and cheese.” which can’t be a particularly crowded category, but the Mac and Cheese Festival’s continuing success suggests that it’s tapped a widespread desire for mac and cheese that doesn’t come from a box at the grocery store. Chefs and just-plain enthusiasts will be whipping up some pretty unconventional dishes, and there will be around 50 on offer for festival-goers.

have garnered awards from festivals and set records for their skills. At least one might be set this year. “We have had many world record holders [perform],” says Mackenzie Muldoon, director of communications at Epilepsy Toronto. “But this is only the third time a record has been attempted to be set at the festival.” This year, Michael Francis Magic will step up to the plate. His goal: the most Yo-Yos spun simultaneously. If you can manage more than two, that’s pretty impressive. Michael will attempt to one-up the previous record of 16, set back in 2010 in the U.K. The record Epilepsy Toronto most wants to see broken this year is the funds they raise to provide counselling, information, and support to 40,000 people with epilepsy. Donations collected at the gates by purple-shirted volunteers are the main source of revenue for the charity. Inside, money tossed into the hat goes directly to the performers, because that’s how they make their living, Bobb points out. “And it’s a great system, if you think about it,” he said. “Like the show? Throw something in the hat; don’t? Walk away! Wouldn’t it be great if all forms of entertainment worked that way?”

omething happens around this time every summer. Summer camp wraps up, bathing suits are looking worse for wear, Halloween candy starts appearing in the grocery store and back-to-school shopping and lunch ideas overwhelm Pinterest and Instagram. Whether you’re a stay-at-home or a working mom, there’s no denying it, summer is coming to a close. Labour Day weekend will be the last hurrah, and then school routines will start up. But is it the start of school bliss? Or is it bittersweet? Ah yes, the fond/painful memories of drop-offs and pick-ups, the struggle of coming up with lunch ideas the kids will eat—and the expensive lunchware to send it in. The school supplies, the long pants, the battle-cry of homework challenges and the indoor/outdoor shoes— is it all rushing back to you now? This is the first time in 16 years that I’ve spent a summer not working (aside from mat leave, which really doesn’t count—it’s a haze of new motherhood that I can barely remember). Most years I didn’t feel the summer/ back-to-school shift as significantly as I do this year. My boys were always in daycare through the summer, so the routine didn’t change much and the hours didn’t change at all. But this year is different. There are two types of moms in this world: The ones who are grateful for the return to school and the ones who are sad to see September come. I can’t decide which team I’m on. It’s a serious “You know I love my children, but...” moment. So many moms feeling they survived another summer, glad to have made it to the first-day-of-

school finish line. Truth is, it’s not easy to look after your own kids 24/7, having to decide the programming, the meals, the outings, the playdates, the structure and unstructure of two hot months of summer. It really isn’t easy. Kids like routine, and the freedom that summer brings is a bit overwhelming. Some weekends are more than I can handle, so doing it for weeks and months at a time is...well, exhausting is a word that comes to mind. And then there are the other mothers —those sad to see it end. Maybe their kids are easy, or maybe it’s that the dynamic works for those moms. They genuinely look forward to the two intense months of summer “fundom”. Maybe they’re better planners? Maybe they just groove more smoothly, roll with the punches more elegantly or are able to tune out the whine of a kid who has too many toys yet still can’t find anything to do. Maybe it’s magic. Who knows? I don’t mention this as yet another form of mom-shaming. Quite the opposite, actually. I mention it because the mom I aspire to be and the mom I am are not quite the same thing, and I’m okay with that. There’s nothing wrong with having survived a summer and

happily sending your child off to school, and there’s nothing wrong with lamenting the end of family fundays either. In this, my one summer of stay-athome-momness, I enrolled my boys into six weeks of summer camp, however, I let them stay home two or three days a week. I let them sleep in and go late. I picked them up early. Some days we had fun and some days they had fun without me. It took the pressure off of having to plan and program, and added balance to my time with them—and their time with me! Apparently it’s not easy on the kids to be with their parents 24/7 either. So I lament a little. I have put off buying that second pair of “indoor” shoes, and won’t pull the backpacks and lunch boxes out of summer storage until Labour Day weekend. I’m hearing the rumblings of back-toschool, and as it approaches, I’m trying to figure out which team I’m on.

It is a game of thinking, negotiating, calculating, risktaking, counting, remembering. And it is gaining popularity among young people. There are a number of open, public bridge clubs in and around Toronto, where one can play bridge for a modest fee for a few hours and earn ‘Master Points.’ Supposedly, the more MPs one has accumulated, the more accomplished a player he or she is. Here in the Beach—as far as this writer knows—we have no official bridge club, other than one private club on Kingston Road. However, even though bridge is largely “underground” in the Beach, it is alive and well, and it is about to show its face on Queen Street East. On Saturday, September 15th, bridge aficionados from the Beach and beyond will gather in some of the local pubs to participate in a non-profit bridge pub crawl with any and all proceeds going to a charity. “How would that work?” you may ask. Well, it is not much different from a regular pub crawl. Groups of players will simultaneously play a few hands of bridge in each of the three participating pubs for an hour or so, while enjoying a morning coffee. When finished, the groups rotate and move to the next pub, where they also play a number of hands; that is where lunch will be served. Finally, all three groups move to their third pub for the last hands of bridge and a drink of choice. Alcohol is optional throughout. Each pair of players accumulates points. The points are tallied up by the “Director” and winners are announced in the “home” pub.

Three local Queen Street pubs/restaurants—all within easy walking distance—have graciously offered their space. The bridge players, in return, will support business by having food and drinks. It’s a win-win situation. If you would like to know more, or if you would like to participate, call 416-987-1019 or visit: www.beachbridgepubcrawl. wixsite.com/bbpc. The fee is $40 per pair, and this covers all fees and includes coffee in pub one and a drink (soft drink, wine, beer) in the third pub.

Beach entrepreneurs share their tips from year one of business By Beach Metro News Staff

STARTING A business can be daunting, yet local beaches entrepreneurs and friends Maryna de Lannoy and Laura Sim decided to take the plunge during a walk through the Beach neighbourhood. Seeing a gap in the market they felt they could fill, Maryna and Laura worked out their concept step by step for two years before they officially launched their business. After years of concept mapping, planning and behind-the-scenes logistics, Eivey, an online marketplace for luxury fashion, was officially born and launched to the public. “We wanted to set a strong foundation to build from and turn our passion project from an idea into reality,” comments de Lannoy, co-founder of Eivey. “There’s a learning curve attached to starting any business,” adds Sim. “Planning for over two years gave us an opportunity to work with some of the challenges that arise from launching any business.” Following a whirlwind year, Maryna and Laura are celebrating the first anniversary of Eivey going live. Here, they share some lessons they learned in year one with other

emerging entrepreneurs.

Do what you know or are excited to know In the early days of business, you have to rely on yourself. You need to be dedicated to learning each and every aspect of your business and knowing it inside and out. Hiring professionals is expensive so utilizing the skills you already have is really important and allows you to make progress while keeping expenses low.

Trust your support network Your support network are the people around you that ‘get’ your business and can support and propel your business forward. Support from their network can come in the form of their time, influence, network or advice. Take advantage of the opportunities they offer you: take those 7 a.m. meetings, attend those networking events, and engage with the conversations. You never know who you’ll meet.

Love your business unconditionally You’ll spend more time than you anticipate getting your business off the ground. It takes a monumental amount of time and effort, can be frustrating and can feel like you’re not making progress. Patience is the key before you start seeing results.

Very few businesses are an overnight success and it takes time to build momentum. Some months will be busy, others will be quiet, and you’ll work late nights and weekends. It’s all par for the course and makes up the bigger picture. Don’t let this phase you.

How to make it rain Be smart and realistic about when you expect to make profit. If the star-up is a side project, keep it that way until you can commit full time. If it’s a fultime gig, plan on having savings or a side job that pays the bills for the first few years. It takes time to start making a profit and earn a salary. In summary, don’t bet on a “get rich fast” plan, be ready for the long game.

Abandon your comfort zone You need to be able to pitch in, do all parts of your job even when it’s outside of your comfort zone. You might not be comfortable in all these roles, but you need to give them 100% of your effort. Embrace expanding your horizon when your business opens. It’s one long adventure! Summertime and the living is easy Jan Main is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@yahoo.ca

T

here is no doubt that during the summer the living is easy. You can eat outside, grill your food over the barbecue or simply pick your food and eat it in hand and it tastes delicious. Here are two simple recipes bursting with flavour to celebrate the flavours of the season with the long, hot days of summer.

Melons and blueberries in daiquiri sauce If you are having guests for the weekend and want a special fruit salad, this is for you. Seasonal fruits are prepared and marinated in a warm rum and lime sauce. It can be served immediately or refrigerated for up to a week – yum! Fruit Salad: 1 cantaloupe, cut into cubes or use a melon baller to make balls 1 honeydew melon, cut into cubes or use a melon baller to make balls watermelon, preferably seedless. Cut fruit cut into cubes or use a melon baller to make balls 2 cups (500 mL) blueberries, washed cup (125 mL) fresh mint. Daiquiri Sauce: 2/3 cup (150 mL) granulated sugar 1 /2 cup (125 mL) rum, preferably dark rum for a more intense flavour 1 /3 cup (75 mL) water 2 limes, wash and grate the rinds from the limes. Reserve. Squeeze the juice from the limes,

about 1/4 cups 50 mL 1/4 cup (50 mL) fresh lemon juice (juice from 1 lemon) Make cantaloupe, honeydew and melon balls by using a melon baller. Add fruit to a large mixing bowl with blueberries and set aside with the mint ready to garnish the finished salad. Sauce: In a stainless steel saucepan, add granulated sugar, rum, water, grated lime rind, lime juice and lemon juice. Stir together and bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer about 5 minutes. Cool to warm and pour over prepared fruit. Spoon fruit into large glass bowl and garnish with reserved mint. Makes 8 – 10 servings.

Saucepan brownies These rich, chocolate brownies have all the taste of fudge brownies but with none of the bother. Simply measure, stir and pack; refrigerate or freeze. These are ideal for toting to cottages and picnics. 1 /2 cup (125 mL) butter

1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar 1/4 cup (50 mL) cocoa 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) graham wafer crumbs 1/2 cup (125 mL) walnuts, coarsely chopped 1 egg, beaten Chocolate Frosting: 1 1/2cups (375 mL) semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 tbsp (25 mL) butter Line an 8 inch (1 L) square pan with parchment paper. In a saucepan over medium – high heat, melt butter. Stir in sugar, cocoa until smooth, then stir in graham wafer crumbs and walnuts. Immediately stir in beaten egg; cook, stirring a few minutes until mixture clings together. Spoon into prepared pan and pack down. Frosting: In mixing bowl over saucepan of simmering water, add chocolate chips and butter. Cook until chocolate chips are melted; stir to combine. Immediately pour chocolate over cold brownie, spreading evenly with a knife. Refrigerate or freeze.

Neighbourhood Stops and Shops

Your home deserves some love and Luxe On Kingston Rd., just west of Birchmount, there’s a new decor store in town, Luxe Home Décor. It’s a beautiful shop, with small furnishings, seasonal trends, kitchenware, storage solutions, bath accessories, entertaining pieces, art, gifts and more. This shop doesn’t simply carry the typical pretty pieces, it’s a curated space of style and utility – housewares and decor pieces that are designed for real life and

built to last. There are plenty of solutions for small space living, ideal for neighbourhood condos, with consideration for smart storage, stackable items and rightshaped pieces made to fit and work. It’s also a friendly, fun store to visit, with none of the pretension and all of the indulgence. The style savvy behind Luxe Home Décor, owner Caroline Pius is lovely to chat with and a fantastic help for discovering

that perfect piece. Bringing her decades of experience as a buyer for some of Canada’s retail giants and department stores, Caroline has a wealth of knowledge on brands that stand up to the challenge of years of use, and an incredible knowledge of specialized brands from around the world. All this with the charm and personalized customer service only a neigbhourhood shop can offer. In Luxe Home Décor, you’ll discover well-loved brands like Cuisinart, Breville, Umbra, Salt and Joseph Joseph, unique products by Ireland’s Ulster Weaver and Italy’s Via Mercato artisanal soap. This is also the Canadian exclusive distribution for UK brand Baker & Salt, with exclusive products for laundry and storage organization. In September a collection of scents and lamps from French Fragrance house Maison Berger (Lampe Berger) will arrive. The featured collection is a collaboration with famed fashion and fragrance designer Lolita Lempicka. Caroline has thought of it all. Parents with back-to-school on the brain will appreciate the selection of lunchpacking options and kids will enjoy childsized kitchen tools that allow them to work alongside mom and dad. From sophisticated to playful, there are options for every style. Countertop odour-free compost bins with a carbon filter by Joseph and Joseph look slick on the most elegant kitchen countertop while the “Get Naked” bath mat offers whimsical shower power.

The wall of kitchen gadgets will not disappoint the most gadget-happy shopper, while kitchenware—from cutting boards to coffee to cookware—makes it easy for you to find the ideal pieces. You’ll find hard anodized pots, enamel-coated cast-iron Dutch ovens and even three-ply cookware that works on induction, plus a variety of bakeware—all so pretty that you’ll want to display it as much as use it. And then there’s the art, locally sourced, original and exquisite, as well as small furnishings for your home and patio or balcony, laundry needs, glassware and tableware for both entertaining and every-day use. Decor isn’t just about style—it’s about making your home comfortable, functional and livable. Good decor brings this all together, achieving the perfect combination of style, function and personal expression. Caroline has created and curated Luxe Home Décor with that in mind. Stop by and find some Luxe for your home. Chat, peruse, be inspired—Caroline’s got great advice and suggestions for all of your decor needs, as well as the tip for an après-shopping cocktail or bite across the street at The Kingston Social! Luxe Home Décor is located at 1434 Kingston Rd., open Wednesday through Friday 11am-6pm, Saturday 11am-5pm and Sunday noon4pm, with longer hours coming in September. | Phone: 647.351.1434 | Web: luxehomedecor.ca —BMN Sponsored Content

On the Wild Side

Monarch butterflies can have an aggressive side Ann Brokelman is an avid birder and nature photographer naturephotosbyann.blogspot.ca

W

hile I’ve written stories about Monarch butterflies before, and I’m sure you’ve read or watched something about their amazing migration to Mexico, this story will touch on a much darker aspect of their lives: their uncontrollable aggression. As I lounged on my friend Dianne’s front yard watching the beautiful Monarch butterflies flying around, their orange and black colouring was noticeably more vibrant indicating that they must have just hatched. We watched as dozens of them took turns landing on the plants and dancing in the air. On one plant there had to be at least 8 butterflies enjoying the sweet nectar. It’s important that we remember that butterflies are an important pollinator, just like bees. Monarch are notable for tasting bad to birds and their orange colouring serves as a warning for these

predators to stay away. Everything we had seen up to this point was what I would call a ‘normal butterfly viewing experience.’ However, as my friend and I watched, two Monarchs suddenly began circling each other, chasing one another, and then landing on the driveway together. While I’ve seen butterflies flit and fly together, this seemed very different. What I didn’t know was if they were fighting or mating? I took a few photos and after zooming in on them, I was able to determine they were both male (FYI: male Monarchs have two extra black dots on their hind wings). Locked together, this pair was actually rolling around on the grass while flapping their wings furiously. At this point, I can assume they aren’t mating, but exactly why they are fighting isn’t clear yet either. I went closer than normal and tried to distract them by waving a hand over them, simulating a passing predator, to absolute-

ly no reaction.

PHOTOS: ANN BROKELMAN

Author Ann Brokelman captured two Monarch butterflies in an aggressive standoff with each other. Though I couldn’t be sure, there are only two likely reasons the butterflies would engage like this: fighting for control of food, or for females. It turns out that while dozens of females may be peacefully flying around a yard from flower to flower, one dominant male will likely be patrolling high in the air watching over his entire domain and preparing to chase away or attack any other male Monarch that approaches. This is a never-ending battle as the chased-away males will only wait a few minutes after leaving before trying to encroach again. Over the course of an hour, my friend and I saw two more fights on the ground and many more in the air.

Amazingly, some of the butterflies even chased away some of the goldfinches and sparrows that came into the yard looking for seeds. Fun facts about Monarch butterflies: • Did you know that they can flap their wings up to 120 times a minute? • They can also fly between 4-12 miles per hour (6-12km/h) on their own, but can go significantly faster if a good wind current is available.

Summer of sadness and outrage continued... Continued from page 6 You have written about your concern with the government’s repeal of the 2015 Sex-Ed curriculum and its replacement by one written in 1998—before consent was acknowledged to be a critical part of education and before same-

sex marriage was legal in Canada. You have also written to protest the government’s cancellation of the curriculum-writing exercise that would have brought the Ontario curriculum in line with the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action on education. And, you are deeply worried about the cancelling of

Ontario’s cap-and-trade program and the absence of any serous climate change action by this government. Thank you for reaching out and letting me know how you feel. I am as disturbed as you are, and I am dedicated to making your voices heard at Queen’s Park and elsewhere.

Annual ‘Rising Star’ competition at the CNE features lots of local talent We’re hiring REPORTERS and PHOTOGRAPHERS Do you know how to write a terrific story or how to capture the perfect photo? We are looking for journalists and photographers who want to be the eyes and ears of the neighbourhoods we serve. We are always looking for freelance journalists and photographers to cover events, and we have an opening for an experienced reporter/photographer.

PRIMARY DUTIES: • Conduct research and interviews for news and feature stories on the phone, in person, and at community meetings and events as assigned by the Editor. • Generate story ideas relevant to the community PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

Nineteen-year-old vocalist Stephen Smith recently participated in another contest put on by 55 Division police, and won.

By Marjan Asadullah

THIS YEAR at the Canadian National Exhibition, also known as the CNE, there will be four residents from the Beach and Leslieville community that are preparing for the spotlight at the annual Rising Star talent competition. Young contestants between the ages of six to 21 are set to compete on a stage that has showcased and promoted undiscovered talent for over three decades. As one of the longest standing youth talent competitions, Rising Star receives hundreds of

video applications from across Ontario but only the top candidates earn the chance to compete in the spotlight during the CNE. The four locals that are on the journey to become “the next big thing” are a nine-year-old vocalist named Amaya Fagon, 12-year-old dancer Amber Littlejohn, 19-year-old vocalist Stephen Smith, and 17-year-old Maya Tilsdale, also a vocalist. All four contestants will be performing a day after each other starting from August 19-August 22. Previous competitor and a trained dancer since the age of four, Littlejohn

is excited to participate in the competition. “I had performed a tap trio with two other girls and it was our very first time competing with Rising Star and we all had such a great time and experience.” This year, Littlejohn is performing a tap solo called Rip It Up. Stephen Smith, a vocalist preparing to compete at the Rising Star competition has also had previous experience on stage. “My most recent contest was put on by the Division 55 police department and covered all of the Division 55 schools. The whole event was very

evenly matched with some of the most talented people I’ve seen, but somehow, I managed to win.” Smith enjoys performing because it gives him the chance to showcase all of his hard work and practice, to entertain, and the applause

at the end, he says, is always thrilling. This year, he will perform a piece inspired by his guitar idol Tommy Emmanuel. The performers will be judged on their natural ability to entertain, audience appeal, stage presence

and the quality of their performance. The Rising Stars competition will be at the CNE from August 17 to September 2. Visit TheEx.com and click the schedule tab for the dates and times of the different Rising Star segments.
