A CROWD of family, friends, community members and well wishers of Beach legend Gene Domagala gathered on April 21 to celebrate the naming of a laneway in his honour. The lane runs between Enderby and Norwood, south of Gerrard. While Domagala is well known as a fountain of knowledge on local history, he has also been active in lending a hand to many organizations ranging from the Toronto Star Christmas Boxes (he is their longest serving volunteer) to local groups such as Beach Metro, the Interfaith Lunch Program, the Beach Rec Centre and Community Centre 55 to name just a few. Modest as ever, Gene took the time during the unveiling ceremony to mention a number of area residents who were important community builders but who have now passed on. Congratulations, Gene. Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon, right, and MPP Arthur Potts, left, were on hand to celebrate the opening of Gene Domagala Lane. PHOTO: ALEX WRIGHT
Residents want Greenwood Station exit on Danforth By Josh Sherman
A WORKING group made up of community volunteers has chosen 1416 Danforth Ave. as its preferred site for a secondary exit/entrance for the TTC’s Greenwood Station, but the transit authority’s board will have the last word. “The TTC has not put forward, accepted, or yet approved any of the locations that the Local Working Group submitted,” said an email statement attributed to David Nagler, manager of community relations for the TTC. The Danforth site is currently home to a Money Mart, and at one time it housed a bank. The original bank structure remains, and at least one area resident would like to see the structure at least partially maintained if it does become a
new subway exit. “That’s the main thing that I am interested in pushing for,” said Geoff Olynyk, who lives near the station. “One of the things I’m trying to organize for is to retrofit the existing building,” he explained, suggesting others in the neighbourhood support the idea. The TTC said layouts presented to the working group “assumed a new building structure” and that “extensive structural investigations have not been completed for any of the locations at this stage of the process.” While Olynyk doesn’t want to see the column-fronted old bank demolished, he does say the location is the best one for a secondary exit. “It’s right on the main road,” he said. However, he notes the
projection of the higher cost for the option due to the length of tunnel that will be required is a “trade off.” The working group selected the Danforth option over 138/140 Monarch Park Ave. at a meeting on April 11. The two options had been the highest ranked among 12 based on a number of criteria the group was working with. Moving forward, the TTC said its project team is going to review the working group’s recommended site. In the first quarter of 2019, TTC staff will report to the transit authority’s board, which will decide the entrance/exit location. “The review will take time and we anticipate having an update meeting in the fall,” said the TTC’s Nagler in the statement.

Beach playschool celebrates 40 years By Josh Sherman
THE BEACHES Co-operative Playschool is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a silent auction on May 26 at local pub Murphy’s Law (1702 Queen St. E.) at 7 p.m. “It’s a casual cocktail party,” said Jennie Record, the co-op’s president, describing the event. “It’s a lot of fun,” she added. Tickets are available by emailing info@ beachescoopplayschool.ca or purchasing them at the door. At the silent auction, attendees will be able to bid on a wide range of items, including a wine package and baseball tickets, with proceeds going towards supporting the playschool. The non-profit preschool, which runs weekday morning and afternoon sessions out of Kingston Road United Church (975 Kingston Rd.), has offered what Record calls “play-based curriculum” for students aged 18 months to five years of age. Currently, 53 students are enroled at the preschool. Record suggests its programming is less regimented than what is found at Montessori schools. “This is a really nice com-

The playschool’s curriculum is constantly changing. Every two weeks, the preschool’s teachers switch up the programming. One example of play-
based learning would be setting up a little dishwashing station. It may not sound like much, but setting up a container of soapy water can get the children excited—and learning. “They experience something we have in real life, but for them it’s exciting because they’re not to wash
the dishes at home,” she says. “They get to learn by experiencing, and it’s just really neat.” “The teachers create these situations for kids to explore, investigate, and challenge themselves,” says Record, whose son Sam joined her at a class last week.

If someone has stolen your identity, they can place online orders in your name, wait for them to arrive at your address, and meet the carrier using ID to receive what they have ordered. Local volunteer wins Ontario award By Josh Sherman
ANOTHER BEACHER has been honoured for their continued volunteer work in the community. Munni Subhani has received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award, which the provincial government’s website (ontario. ca) says “recognizes volunteers for providing committed and dedicated service to an organization.” She received the award on April 18 at the Grover Pub (676 Kingston Rd.).“The last thing I think is of getting something, but it’s nice sometimes to get a pat on your back,” Subhani, a member of the Toronto Netralya Lion’s Club, laughed. “It’s a lot I’ve done.” Through her volunteer work, she has helped raise money for SickKids and CNIB, an organization dedicated to helping those with vision issues. She is also a Better Living Health Centre board member who has created a fitness program for seniors. Close to 200 seniors take part in the program, which teaches a “healing dance,” at various locations. Why does Subhani volunteer? “In your whole days work, or whole
week, if you take out a little bit of time and share what you have, suddenly you realize that means a lot,” she said. “That comes from a family tradition,” she added. In fact, Subhani’s volunteer work dates back to her childhood in her native Bangladesh. Her family ran an orphanage, where she learned the values she has today. “What you have, just share,” she said. “I think we never had food alone at home. There was a big table, and whoever came had food,” she reminisced of her childhood. And this is not her first time Subhani’s work has been recognized. Previously as an ESL teacher, she was given the “Night of Solidarity with Survivors of Torture” award. On May 5, join Subhani at the Lions Gala for Sight 2018, a fundraiser promoting Indigenous eye health. The event takes place at 6 p.m. at the Avani Event Centre (8400 Jane St.) in Vaughan. “The 5th of May is a big event,” said Subhani. “The proceeds will be donated to make an eye centre for the Indigenous people,” she explained. Beaches Mental Wellness goes west By Josh Sherman
BEACH RESIDENT Jason Balgopal is expanding Beaches Mental Wellness, the local support group he first started up here in January 2015. Beaches Mental Wellness meets each Tuesday 7-8 p.m. at Community Centre 55 (96 Main St.). With Riverside Mental Wellness, Balgopal is bringing the Beach initiative’s confidential drop-in meetings to a new neighbourhood to the west, starting Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at the Ralph Thornton Community Centre (765 Queen St. E.). “It’s a free peer-to-peer group where people come and after brief introductions can talk about anything on their mind,” explained Balgopal, 2017 Beach Citizen of the Year.
PHOTO: BEACH METRO FILE
Jason Balgopal founded Beaches Mental Wellness in 2015, and now he’s bringing the program to Riverside.
The initiative provides a place for people to talk about issues so they don’t have to constantly discuss them with family and friends, which can be straining on relationships, he sug-
gested. The decision to set up in Riverside, near Broadview Avenue, was based on more than one factor, Balgopal said. Where available space was located was one and
need stemming from all the development in the area was another. “There really isn’t any comparable supports in that neighbourhood,” he said. There may be more locations in the future, as Balgopal noted how the model is scalable and could be set up anywhere. “As long as we’ve got space and people that are willing we can run it,” he added. Balgopal has previously told Beach Metro that the mental wellness group was inspired by his own depression issues. “One of the things I found as I was going through that process—and as I was getting to a better place in my life towards the end of 2014—was that there were no supports in the community that were readily accessible,” said Balgopal last summer.

I CAN’T remember why I quit dancing. It used to be one of my favourite things to do. I blame age, infirmity and a general lack of oomph. However, after observing a recent yoga/dance/movement class taught by Stewart Moracen, I realize that there might just be hope for me after all. In My Opinion
‘Poetry is the language of the heart’ Kate Marshall Flaherty Toronto representitive The League of Canadian Poets
APRIL 26 was Poem in Your Pocket Day across Canada, and what a day! It is a day to get poetry out into the world, to make it accessible, inspiring and community-building, too. My poem, ‘Sel’, was one of 20 poems chosen this year —what an honour! You can see the powerful Canadian poems made into postcards illustrated by artist Megan Fides, as well as American poets’ poetry and ideas for celebrating and spreading
poetry online at poets.ca. Beach Metro’s photographer/reporter, Josh Sherman, followed me to Notre Dame High School, where we visited Caroline O’Connor’s Grade 11 English class. She had prepared them well, with handouts of the entire PIYP Day poems. “Poetry is the language of the heart,” I said. “It distils feelings and images that are both personal and universal.” As Mary Oliver says, “It is not so much what the words say, as how they make you feel …” Next I went to local café, Grinder on Main (126 Main St.), just south of Gerrard, where owners James and Trish Feistner were busy
making coffee and breakfasts. There was Natalia sitting outside with her coffee and a wagon with two tots. She said someone had already given her a poem for her pocket! The toddlers reached for a poem, and some bikers tucked poems into their shorts, to read after their rides. Following that, I headed to the Toronto Public Library’s Main Street and Beaches branches, where I handed out and read poems to anyone looking for books to peruse. I then moved on to hand out poems to people who were enjoying the sun on the boardwalk and
Kew park. One elderly woman recited a part of Leonard Cohen’s Anthem about “the crack that lets the light in.” I was impressed! Remember that lyrics can be poetry too! On the streetcar, handing out poems initiated conversation with a new Canadian couple, who loved to read poetry in their own language back home in Bangladesh. I continued on, spending a little time at a Tim Horton’s location. One woman told me that having a poem read to her was a lovely way to take her mind off the waiting. Another person said it took his mind off of the pain. I saw posts from around Canada
celebrating PIYP Day: tweets from the Griffin Trust to high schools; films about pocket poems from a Nova Scotia café to a North Bay daycare; pictures of people with poems tucked into pockets, pants, hats and tacked onto corkboards. It was a joy to see the connections poetry makes. There is one thing that I didn’t get to do: fold a poem into a paper airplane and sail it through an unsuspecting person’s window. What fun! Maybe next year... Kate Marshall Flaherty’s poem “Sel” appears on Page 17.

Thank-you, Gene—for all that you do I WAS one of the people in the very large crowd who went to the ceremony to mark the naming of Gene Domagala Laneway and to the celebration that followed at Community Centre 55. As a local resident I have taken some of his walks where he shares his knowledge and stories about the history of the neighbourhood.
Some years ago I stopped Gene in the park one day to ask his opinion about a portrait that was discovered buried under piles of old insulation in the attic of our house and persuaded him to come and take a look at our ‘Attic Boy’. I was thrilled at finding the drawing but puzzled as the picture is dated 1856 and we believe our house was built circa 1915. Could this young lad in a sailor suit have been a relative of the first people who lived our house? It is a mystery and although Gene was not able to know the answer he kindly gave his time and shared my enthusiasm for the portrait. ‘Attic Boy’ is no longer under piles of old cut up newspapers. He is framed and protected with glass. We think of him as one of our guardian angels – keeping us happy and safe in a place we love so much. Thank you Gene for all that you do.

other’s love for her children has a long history. It is this love that we celebrate on Mother’s Day, usually with a family member or members entertaining their mother with special treats. This year, I would like to feature a tantalizing square sent overseas to loved ones during The Great War. The historic cooks at Fort York (yes, Fort York has historic cooks who research, test and re-create recipes of the past for special events held at the Fort or to sell in Fort York’s museum store) have been working on a new cookbook, which will come out Summer 2018, available in book stores, through Amazon and Fort York’s museum store. One of the volunteers, Mark Anthony D’Aguilar, has researched an irresistible hard tack recipe which is here for you to enjoy with your Mother over a cup of tea. Although the name, ‘hard tack’ does not sound enticing, this version quickly became a favourite among the volunteers who were only too happy to sample variations as they tested and re-tested recipes for the new cookbook. Wishing all Mothers a very special day as they sample this treat from the past!
Hard Tack Here in Mark’s words is the background to the recipe followed by an easy to make, easy to transport and very easy to eat teatime treat: “This recipe submitted by Mrs. James Gairdner for Aunt Hanna’s Cook Book is a perfect example of a homemade recipe sent to a family member serving overseas. This recipe made me wonder, who was this woman? And to whom was she sending this gift?
“This recipe made me
wonder, who was this woman? And to whom was she sending this gift? After searching First World War Canada in military records, I found copies of an Officer’s Declaration Paper dated March 16, 1917 and an Attestation Paper from April 20, 1915, for James Arthur Gairdner. These papers included his next of kin who he listed as his mother, Mrs. James Gairdner, of 338 Wellesley St., Toronto. (Her address was in Ward 2 Toronto, where Aunt Hanna’s Cook Book was compiled.) Searching birth records revealed that
James Arthur Gairdner was born on July 23, 1893, the youngest of four children, of parents James Gairdner and Selena Whiteside. He enlisted in 1915, went overseas as part of the 12th Regiment, York Rangers and in 1916 was wounded. Lt. James Arthur Gairdner recovered at the Perkins Bull Convalescent Hospital for Canadian Officers, on Putney Heath, England. There he met and later married a Canadian Volunteer Aid Detachment (VAD) Nurse from Toronto, Ontario named Norma Ecclestone Smith. When the war ended late in 1918, Major (James Arthur was promoted to Major in 1916.) and Mrs. Gairdner settled in Oakville, Ontario. Like many of the officers that served in and survived the Great War, James Arthur Gairdner became a successful businessman and philanthropist who established the Oakville-Trafalgar Hospital and Gairdner Foundation. The mother of this very successful man, Selena Whiteside Gairdner, has left us her recipe for Hard Tack, a sweet reminder of the love a mother sent in a package overseas to her only son during the Great War. What a wonderful taste from home.”

From Aunt Hanna’s War-Time and PeaceTime Recipe dated 1918, comes this fruit and nut hard tack, perfect with a hot cup of tea and conversation. Feel free to substitute dried apricots or raisins for the dates and pecans for the walnuts.
Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon and City of Toronto
1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour 1 tsp (1 mL) baking powder 1 cup (250 mL) packed, chopped dates 1 cup (250 mL) chopped walnuts 1 cup (125 mL) icing sugar Preheat oven to 350 F (180 C). Line 9 inch (23 cm) square cake pan with parchment paper. Set aside. In a medium mixing bowl using an electric mixer, beat the sugar and egg until smooth and light in colour. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Add the dates and walnuts to flour mixture, tossing well to separate the pieces of date. Scrape the egg mixture over the date mixture and stir to mix well. Spread the batter evenly over the bottom of the prepared cake pan. Bake until light golden brown, about 20 – 22 minutes. Let cool for about 7 -10 minutes in the pan on a rack. Transfer the hard tack to a cutting board. Cut into 32 even pieces; using a sieve, dust the hard tack liberally with icing sugar on top and bottom of square. Store in cake tin. Makes 32 pieces.

What Makes a Good Wine Judge? Edward Finstein Wine writer, author, TV and radio host, educator, judge winedoctor.ca thewinedoctor.blogspot.com @DrWineKnow facebook.com/EdwardDocFinstein
E
ver wonder what makes a good wine judge? Usually folks in the wine trade like winemakers, wine growers, sensory scientists, wine educators, wine journalists and wine agents are utilized as judges because wine is what they do and have a pretty good handle on what it’s all about. However, even within this exclusive group of professionals, not all make good judges. All wines in competition are tasted blind, so the judges don’t know exactly what they are tasting. Some superficial information might be provided like varietal content or wine style. So exactly what makes a good wine judge? A good knowledge of wine is a great start. This is the absolute basic requirement for someone to become a judge. Next would be a decent palate. Some people simply have a natural ability for this. Others, because they are in the industry, develop it over time. Still others can learn it by taking wine courses, joining wine-tasting clubs or simply through lots of experience tasting different wines. The next
important criteria would be objectivity. Human beings are all different and it’s only natural we like and dislike certain things. However, when it comes to wine judging, the judge must leave subjectivity out of the process. In other words, if a judge doesn’t like fino Sherry, for instance, he or she should still be able to recognize what a good example is. Also key is a judge’s ability to explain the reasoning behind a given score. Why he or she liked or didn’t like a wine! It’s one of the backbones of the whole process.
PHOTO: WINNIEPIX/FLICKR
Another factor that makes a good wine judge is consistency of scoring. Many wine competitions will present the exact same wine to a judge numerous flights down the road or even another day to see
how consistent they are in scoring it. Bottle variation and defects aside, if a particular judge gives the same wine a gold medal one time through and no medal at all the next time through, their judging ability is questionable and they may not be asked back to judge again. Finally, a taster’s personality can play a huge role. Many competitions allow for their judges on a particular panel to discuss a certain wine before the final scores are submitted. So if a particular judge or two are missing something in a wine that affects the overall score, they might alter their score by taking a second look at the wine. Judges who are inclusive and listen to other judges’ comments are welcome. Those who are exclusive and think that their score is the ultimate and won’t budge are usually not asked back as they tend to be a disruptive influence. Here are some other general rules about good judging. A judge should always focus and judge only the wine in the glass before them. They should avoid second-guessing himself or herself, as first impressions are usually most accurate. When tasting a lot of wines, endurance should be developed. All wines should be judged on quality, no other criteria. They should
use specific and definable words and avoid jargon and shorthand. Judges should accentuate the positive aspects of a wine, not the negative. Now you know what makes a good wine judge. Certain places in the world offer courses in becoming a wine judge like the American Wine Society and the Australian Wine Research Institute. Other competitions may simply offer testing to see if you qualify.

Michael J. Fox: Back to the Past Bernie Fletcher “If 30 years ago these two Canadians knew they would be working in the Oval Office, they would have been on better behaviour. Thanks Kiefer.” Michael J. Fox on Instagram
L
ong-time friends Michael J. Fox and Kiefer Sutherland are back in Canada starring together on Designated Survivor (Wed. 10 p.m. on CTV). Fox plays a wily lawyer who is investigating White House leaks and butting heads with President Kirkman (Sutherland). The pair have reunited thirty years after Bright Lights, Big City (1988). Fox recently said this was “a chance to reconnect...It was really great to work with Kiefer again. Time has been better to him than it has been to me...He was a fun kid, lots of hot hijinks, so now to see him in this role, this wise, sage, calm guy, this diplomat, it’s just amazing.” (Good Morning America, April 18) Early in their careers, Fox was cast as the nice, easy-going boy next door (Family Ties 1982-1989, Back to the Future 1985), while Sutherland usually played sinister, edgy, bad boys (Stand by Me, 1986). They became two of the most popular TV and movie stars. On his mantle Fox has five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes and a Grammy. Sutherland won acclaim as Jack Bauer on 24 with an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Besides being proud Canadians, the two
share a passion for hockey, guitar-playing, working hard and contributing to worthy causes. Both moved around a lot as kids. Fox was an ‘army brat’ who lived all over Canada. When Sutherland’s actor parents broke up, he lived with his mom, Shirley Douglas, in Crescent Town just north of the Danforth. With early fame came wild times. Sutherland has been known to dive onto Christmas trees, while Fox once told Rolling Stone, “Being Canadian I never met a beer I didn’t like.” Fox has been sober for decades. If we hopped into that DeLorean from Back to the Future, we could travel back in time to the early 1980s when Fox was a struggling actor. In only his second film, Class of 1984 (1982), he was credited as Michael Fox. His real middle initial is’A’ for Andrew, but he thought ‘J’ sounded better. The ‘J’ is the only phony thing about him. With the tagline, “Is this the future?,” Class of 1984 is a more violent update of 1955s Blackboard Jungle with hapless educators trying to control unruly students. One teacher even pulls out a gun in class. What could possibly go wrong with that?? Scenes were filmed at Ashbridge’s Bay and Main Street’s Police Station Number 10 (later 55 Division) before the building became Community Centre 55 in 1975. The station was also used as a location for Black Christmas (1974). Horror and exploitation films were popular in those Canadian tax shelter years. Prom Nigh (1980) featured a scene above the Bluffs, but the scariest sight was Leslie Nielson disco dancing. Continued on Page 15

ON A grey-and-drizzly Wednesday afternoon, the club room at Crescent Town Club is full of colour. Clad in bright sarees of blue, green, and red, four women dance across the front of the room before an audience of about 50, most of whom are over 50. They are mostly members of the Harmony Hall Centre for Seniors’ Bengali program, and they are here to ring in the Bengali New Year, also known as Pohela Boishak. The national holiday in Bangladesh is typically celebrated on April 14, but due to flooding from the ice storm, the Crescent Town festivities were pushed back to April 25. Asma Ferdousy, who volunteers with the Bengali program, mixed two cultures with her musical performance. Western instruments like guitar and keyboard backed her Bengali vocals. “We celebrate the special food,” said Ferdousy of the New Year. “This is our culture.” A traditional dish of hilsa fish, rice, and dahl was served.

Salina Khan has been a member of the group for eight years, or “from the beginning.” She said, “This is our social cultural big event.” Her favourite part? “Everything,” she replied, adding it makes her feel like home back in Bangladesh. The event is one of several that the South Riverdale Community Health Centre offers through the Harmony Hall Bengali program. “We need some recreation,” said Khan. “We are really quite happy.” David Livingston-Lowe, manager of the South Rivderdale centre, spoke to the importance of the program, which complements similar Tamil, Chinese and English programs. “For probably the majority of our seniors that I’ve spoken to, they have a sense of community, a home away from home,” he said, noting many live here in Crescent Town. “This also gives them a chance to speak their own language, meet others who are going through similar situations,” he added.

Horticultural Matters
Cactus have their place in Ontario Steven Chadwick is a professional gardener, horticulturist, and long-time Beach resident
I
f you’re looking for unusual and interesting native plants to add to the perennial garden this spring, how about growing a cactus? If you think growing cacti as a perennial in Canada is an impossible and crazy idea, you might be right. But there is one cactus species called Eastern prickly pear (opuntia humifusa) that can not only survive our harsh winters, it is also one of our strangest and most unlikely native plants, and one that has been quietly growing in the wilds of Ontario for thousands of years. Like many other members of the ‘I didn’t know that grew here’ group of plants which include such Ontario exotics as paw-paws, pitcher plants, and wild orchids, the North American range of the prickly pear cactus is extensive, stretching from the Great Lakes all the way down to Florida, into Texas and across the border to Mexico where the edible pads and fruit of this tough little cacti are treated as a valuable cash crop that rivals the economic impact of potatoes. Unfortunately, what might be a tasty treat for some has left a bad taste in the mouths of residents in some semi-tropical areas of the world. In parts of North Eastern Australia it has become such an invasive and aggressive noxious weed that it has earned it the title of ‘green devil’.
Here in Ontario there is no danger of our native cactus running rampant across the countryside. The plants have enough stress enduring our bone chilling winters, habitat erosion, human interference and competition with non-native hooligans such as knapweed, dog-strangling vine and garlic mustard. As a result, prickly pear is on the Ontario Species at Risk list of indigenous plants and is in imminent danger of disappearing, with the few remaining colonies growing in the wild making their last stand on the shoreline of Lake Erie and the sandy dunes and spits in Point Pelee and Long Point. They may be fighting a losing battle struggling to grow in their natural habitat but there are ornamental cultivated plants that can sometimes be found in well-stocked garden centers that appreciate the unusual, so there is an opportunity to add this unique and prickly succulent to the garden collection. Like all other cactus species, they need full sun, blazing heat, and a dry well-drained sandy soil although they
will tolerate short periods of abnormally wet weather during establishment and the occasional torrential downpour throughout the growing season. In mid-summer attractive yellow flowers form on the fleshy round pads followed by fruit that is – you guessed it – the shape of a small pear. When colder temperatures arrive in late fall, the foliage turns a wrinkled pale green and plays dead in the middle of a harsh winter. This withered appearance lasts well into spring and often causes some gardeners to pitch their plant into the compost bin. But with patience, its foliage will slowly regain its deep green colour and magically resurrect itself when warm summer weather arrives. Of course, for looks and dramatic impact these compact little shrubs are never going to compete with those giant ‘hands up or I’ll shoot’ saguaro cacti that populate the cowboy landscapes of John Ford westerns, but their spiny paddles will definitely add a bit of desert ambiance when planted near more common succulents like yucca, sempervivum (hens and chicks) and varieties of sedum. They are sometimes cultivated in high-end public parks and if you want to see an example, there is a prickly pear cactus in Rosetta McClain Gardens that has been happily weathering our winters for many years in the small perennial display just east of the top end of the rose garden.

Toronto locations turn up in many productions Continued from Page 11 Police Station 10 was built in 1911. One of the officers who patrolled the beat was Glover Boyd, father of the infamous bank robber, Edwin Alonzo Boyd. The younger Boyd wasn’t the only rebellious youth of his day. We may think of our parents and grandparents as law-abiding, church-going, tea drinkers in Toronto the Good, but did you know that one of the biggest riots in our history took place right here in the Beach on Queen Street East and outside the Main Street Police Station? Young people were restless at the end of the war. On Halloween night in 1945, a huge crowd on Queen turned hijinks into violence, throwing rocks, smashing windows and starting fires on the streetcar tracks. Police arrested two ringleaders, but a mob marched up to Main Street and tried to storm the police station in an effort to free them. Police and firemen trained fire hoses on the swarming crowd that eventually dispersed, but not before 13 arrests, injuries and broken windows. Newspaper headlines blared, “MOB SWARMS POLICE STATION” and “TURN HOSES ON 7000 RIOTERS.” The Back to the Future trilogy made Fox a huge star. In one sequel set in 2015 a rich, sleazy bully runs everything.
Sandra
As if that could ever happen! What next? Jack Bauer (24) as President? Fox was in Toronto (with scenes at Woodbine Beach) starring in Life with Mikey (1993) just after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991. Fox was told that he would soon be unable to work, yet here he is 27 years later. Established in 2000, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised over $750 million for research. Fox believes, “We have the answers within us somewhere.” Time flies...especially if you have a DeLorean. Can you believe ‘Marty McFly’ (Fox) is turning 57 on June 9? Fox is still energetic and an inspiration to us all. For all his popularity and charity work, he would say his greatest achievement is his family of wife Tracy Pollan and his four children. Survivor is becoming more like 24 than The West Wing. For one episode a villa was built near the beach at Bluffers’ Park in Scarborough complete with palm trees and surly Cuban rebels chasing Maggie Q. under the bluffs. Toronto has doubled for unusual places on screen, including Tokyo and Tehran, but pretending to be tropical Cuba is a first. Of course, it’s all make-believe like the newly hawkish President sending missiles against a small country. Oh wait, that is too close to reality.

A walk into East Toronto’s past Gene Domagala
I
n our last issue I asked what you wanted to know about our area. I received some interesting questions and I hoped I was able to answer them for you. One question asked what about Historic Walks? Well, dear readers, I will be doing six historic walks. The first one will be starting at Danforth and Main on the northwest corner at Hope United Church on Saturday May 19th at 1 p.m. This is a very historic place although it was a controversial area at one time because north of the Danforth was the New Market Race Track, scene of the 1868 Queens Plate. At the race there were 5,000 people in attendance along with mounted soldiers as well as the high and mighty of society and politics. Barbra Myrvold of the East Toronto and Beach Historical Society has written a history about this race track. We would like to have the city place a historical plaque on this site. On the walk I will talk about the different buildings on this important corner – the bank, the funeral parlour, the Aberdeen curling rink, etc. Then we will proceed down Main Street (which was originally named Dawes Road) southward to talk about the largest railroad marshalling yards in Canada and included the largest Round house. The marshalling yards were
originally owned and run by the Grand Trunk Railroad. Later it was absorbed by the Canadian National R.R.. It was originally known as York Station and now it is the site of the GO station. We will take time to note some of the interesting houses in the area including the Ideal Theatre and the Ulster Temple. This area was a thriving town known as East Toronto. In its heyday, it boasted 5,000 inhabitants. It also had the Grand Trunk YMCA, as well as the area’s first hospital and library which were situated near the present Ted Reeve Arena. I will talk about the largest bakery in the area, Snells Bakery, and the first farmers market located at the northwest corner of Main and Gerrard. We will visit two of the area’s churches, Calvary Baptist and St. Saviours. We will then walk along the first heritage conservation district in the area, Lyall Avenue. We will note the first location of Malvern High School along with Kimberley School and the Main Street public library. The walk will end up at Community Centre 55 which with the Fire Hall are both historic sites. You have to pay attention because there will be a question on where Morton’s Grove an East Toronto railroad known from 18881908 was located. All are welcome. There will be special guests on our walk. This walk will answer some of your main questions about Newmarket Race Track and East Toronto. A list about oncoming historic walks will be in the next edition of the Beach Metro News.

Local poet Kate Marshall Flaherty hands out her poem “Sel” on April 26 for Poem in Your Pocket Day. Read the poem in the column to the right.
Residents of one of the youngest neighbourhoods in the Beach celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up the area around their newly occupied condo development, The Southwood, located at 630 and 665 Kingston Road. Southwood resident Shauma Thom decided to organize the event to help everyone get to know one another and to build some community spirit. Real Comeau (shown with his wife Linda) said that the clean up was old hat for him as he has a habit of picking up trash around the buildings every couple of days. Clean Toronto Together events were also held in seven area parks including Ashbridges Bay Park, East Toronto Athletic Field, Glen Stewart Park, Jonathan Ashbridge Park, Kew Gardens, Monarch Park and Woodbine Beach.

The semi-professional Toronto Hustle cycling team in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Joe Martin Stage Race.
Local cycling team gearing up By Josh Sherman
UPPER BEACHER Brad Bradford was late to the game.He didn’t take up competitive cycling until he was nearly 30. That didn’t stop him from forming a formidable team, though.“I saw that there was a need for a team that identified with the city,” he said. “I saw there was a
need for a program where we could take Canada’s next generation of developing riders and take them to the biggest races in North America... to give them the opportunity to move up into the professional ranks,” Bradford added. To meet that need, he founded Toronto Hustle – a semi-professional cycling team that competes interna-
tionally – in January 2017. “We’re an underdog team,” he said of the 11-member sports club that has members hailing from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and stateside. Toronto Hustle is sending seven members to California for the Redlands Bicycle Classic, May 2–6, the latest international competition for the team. And to raise
money to cover the team’s expenses, Toronto Hustle is hosting a fundraiser/season launch party from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on May 10 at Rorschach (1001 Eastern Ave.).Tickets are available on Eventbrite. ca. Check the cycling club’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/torontohustleCS for more info.

Beachers selling historic farmhouse recently a Beach home that they purchased on Lyall Avenue in May 2016. Sharon and David aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. “We learned as we went,” Sharon said. “We do the things ourselves that we’re capable of,” she explained. So while they’ll call in help, the Bakers have put together a couple of kitchens and a shower stall themselves. They’ve also painted and done their own drywall repairs. But the project that came before the Beach home required a little bit more work. The couple had a farmhouse circa 1850 completely reconstructed at
380 Dyson Rd. in the late-’80s on a lot in Pickering backing directly onto the Rouge River. First they went to a designer they found in Century Home Magazine to see if he could draw up plans for a new home that would have the defining elements of a century-old farmhouse. “He put up his nose and said, “I don’t do imitation,’” Sharon recalled. But he did tell the Bakers that he had the real thing—stored in pieces in a garage. “Next thing you know, we bought those pieces,” she said. Two truckloads of parts were hauled to their lot on the western edge of Pickering, where workers made a house out of them once more. After a year of painstaking construction, the Regency Gothic-style home, which boasts 7,200 square feet of living space, eight bedrooms, and seven bathrooms, was done. While all the mechanical systems are contemporary, the home appears right out of the 19th century. Pine floors and trim abound, and even the interior colouring is accurate to the era. For Sharon, projects like these provide “that sense of things that last.” Now that the couple is downsizing to the Beach, however, the decision has been made to list the home Sharon and David have loved over decades for $ 1,699,000. They are currently accepting offers.

Clockwise from the left: one of four fire places in the home keeps the great room toasty; the façade brings back the past, block by block; and the kitchen keeps true to the era without neglecting modern perks.

SHARON BAKER doesn’t know exactly why she started renovating old homes. But one thing that’s clear is that her interest doesn’t come from her childhood. “My parents always had modern houses,” she said. Whatever its foundation, the hobby has allowed her and her husband, David, to combine a shared passion for antiques with real estate. “Sharon and I have always had a great love of antiques, and then that sort of naturally spilled over to our homes as well,” added David. They’ve renovated several character-rich homes over the years, including most
