Wynne stops in at Centre 55 By Andrew Hudson

Blowin’ cool on a hot jazz night The Not Affiliated Big Band, a regular part of the Toronto International Beaches Jazz Festival streetfest, joined the annual Queen Street party once again. The group was one of dozens that shut down the street for three nights in July. Other musical acts performed on the stage in Woodbine Park over the course of the three-week festival. See page 3 for more photos.

SOME NINE year-old summer campers beat the Beach Metro News to an exclusive interview with Premier Kathleen Wynne last week. Kids in the day camp at Community Centre 55 got to ask Wynne several questions when the premier dropped in on Wednesday, a day when Wynne also visited the new Chest Centre at Toronto East General Hospital and toured the riding with local MPP Arthur Potts. After a few softball questions – Wynne said her favourite colour is turquoise and no, not everyone cheers wherever she goes – one camper threw a fast one. “Is your job hard and confusing?” Some days it is, said the premier, especially when money is tight. Wynne’s visit to Centre 55 – a former police station turned community centre – comes at a time when her government is trying to promote such “community hubs” and avoid selling too many surplus public buildings into private hands. Much of the focus has been on under used schools, which education minister Liz Sandals has said are costing Ontario about $1 billion a year. In Toronto, the Toronto District School Board is reviewing 70 schools over the next three years. Some are expected to be declared surplus and sold. On August 10, an advisory group appointed by Wynne submitted a report on how the provincial government can try and keep such properties public, whether as daycares, health clinics, non-profit offices, or other community-hub uses. “This isn’t about never closing a school again, or never consolidating schools,” Wynne told Beach Metro News. “That would be unrealistic.” “But what I want to make sure is that we do everything in our power to deliver services in the best way possible for kids and for communities, and that includes using public space much better.” Back when she was a TDSB trustee, from 2000 to 2003, Wynne said she saw firsthand how cities and school boards often fail to collaborate on shared space. But Wynne said there is also too much red tape at the provincial level that prevents new community hubs from starting.

“In some cases, you’ve just got a really imaginative, persistent person who has worked through all hurdles, and has made it work,” she said. “It shouldn’t be that hard.” Among the 28 recommendations in the community hubs report are calls for a better database of surplus public properties, a “community hubs” facilitator who works across six Ontario ministries, and subsidies for some community organizations that cannot afford the full market value of a surplus property. Another recommendation is specific to school boards. Under existing rules, when a school board has surplus property to sell, the board has to restrict the offer to other school boards for the first 90 days. The report suggests keeping that schools-first priority, and doubling that restricted offer period to 180 days – a move that could help long-standing efforts by Toronto’s Frenchlanguage boards to buy a surplus property for an East End high school. “I can say, having been a member of a school board, sometimes school boards don’t work well together,” Wynne said. “They don’t give each other notice, and they don’t make it easy to work together,” she added. “That has to change.”

Paul Babich is 15th Citizen of the Year By Jon Muldoon

www.DentalCareForYou.ca 647-350-4500 3520 Danforth Ave. (Danforth/Warden)

LIKE MOST of the previous honourees, this year’s Citizen of the Year says he can’t quite understand why he deserves the title. As far as Paul Babich is concerned, he’s just doing what he does, organizing when things need to be organized, pitching in where he can, and helping out whenever he’s asked. So is it true? Does he have a gift for getting things done? “That’s what they say, I guess. I like to get involved,” he said. “My wife says I can’t say no.” Babich has lived in the Beach since the 1950s, but he still counts himself lucky to be here. After growing up in Malartic, Quebec (about 700 km north and a bit east of Toronto), the time came for a move to the big city. “There were two properties my mother was looking at, at Oakwood and St. Clair and in the Beach. Thank God she picked the Beach,” he said. Babich and his wife Linda raised their two children in the neighbourhood. Their daughter, with her husband and three children, still lives only a few blocks away, though their son and his family live in England. Babich is a long-time member of the Balmy Beach Club, having joined in his teens in 1956. He’s in the club’s Hall of Fame, served on the board for 19 years, and is one of only seven people who have been named as lifetime members. “It’s a nice compliment,” he said. Babich helped with the start-up of the Balmy Beach Old Boys hockey team, which he took over organizing in 1986. The team tours Europe every other year, and also holds numerous fundraisers. Those efforts include buying turkeys for Community Centre 55’s annual Share A Christmas program for more than 20 years, as well as occasional one-off events,

Beaches Jazz Festival fun on Queen Street The 27th annual Beaches International Jazz Festival ran for three weeks this year, covering several weekends at Woodbine Park, a special Pan Am Games tribute, and streetfest, which closed down Queen Street East to traffic for three nights of live music on the street. Summer camp spreads love of cooking to budding chefs By Andrew Hudson

THEY ARE always full of water, impossible to paddle, and hold nothing heavier than a little salad. But kids in the Beaches Rec Centre’s summer cooking camp are loving their cucumber canoes. Gordon Brown, known as “Chef Gordon,” says the six- to 12-yearolds in the camp are enjoying something new this year – picking cucumbers and other greens straight from the new community garden at Ashbridges Bay Park. “The whole idea is so perfect,” said Brown, explaining how the Friends of the Beach Parks set aside some garden space just for the kids. Now, as they pick their own cukes, kale, beans, lettuce and herbs, they see food go from “dirt to dinner.” Starting with a one-hour afterschool program in 2009, Brown has seen the Rec Centre’s kids’ cooking camps grow to include five afterschool classes and a series of August day camps. “Children, four o’clock, and food. How could you go wrong?” he said, when asked why the school-year class is so popular. After an hourlong class, everyone goes home with a dish they have helped make themselves. At the summer camp, Mya, 10,

said she has already made a lasagna at home. Beatrice, also 10, made her mom a vanilla birthday cake with fondant icing molded into abstract shapes. But if her first taste of raw garlic is any clue, she still has more tastes to acquire. “It was so spicy,” she said. “It was like a jalapeno pepper, but worse.” Brown, who studied cooking at George Brown College and baked at St. John’s Bakery, also teaches youths, adults, even seniors. Every class shares a common appeal – you’re going to eat every day, Brown says, so you might as well learn to do it better. But for kids’ classes, Brown does take a unique approach. For example, no one can say the word “hate” in class. Brown understands that with their extra-sensitive palates, many kids get overpowered by strong flavours. He has them express that another way. “If they don’t like something, they tell me they have strong feelings about it,” he said, smiling. “It’s great to hear a little kid say, ‘I have strong feelings about mushrooms.’” Brown is not above getting silly to make a point. Before they get to use their paring knives, Brown mimics many

ways of holding one – straight out while blindfolded, in the middle of a sword fight, or point-down at his side. The kids yell out a chorus of “yes” or “no” as he goes. Besides learning kitchen safety, how to shop at grocery stores and farmers’ markets, how to chiffonade a head of lettuce or cut a carrot at 10 o’clock, Brown also shows stu-

do the little things he hears closer to home. In June, after his last afterschool class wrapped up, Brown heard someone call “Chef Gordon” on Queen Street. A boy’s mother stopped him and announced that he had an important message – he had just made his dad French toast for Father’s Day, all by himself.

dents the value of the food they’re making. Every month, the students prepare two casseroles for the downtown Good Shepherd mission, which serves the homeless. All the expenses are covered by fundraisers held by the Rec Centre’s Advisory Council. Delivering those dishes to Good Shepherd means a lot to Brown. So

Library creates local reading celebrity Jackson Dowler, 8, jokes with TV reporters after receiving a special thank-you from the Main Street library on August 19. A big fan of comic books, especially Asterix and Tin Tin, Jackson felt sorry when he woke up one day to find he had accidentally ripped a page from a library copy of Asterix and the Roman Agent in his sleep. Instead of just returning the book, he tucked an apology inside, signed “Jackson.” When local librarians posted the note online so they could thank him and tell him not to worry, they could repair the book, Jackson’s story made headlines across the city, the US, and Europe. “I’ve never got this much attention in my whole life,” he told reporters. Asked if he had any words of wisdom for fellow readers, Jackson said he does like to play video games, but “probably you should read over playing with your phone.”

IF IT feels better to give than to get, Veronica Gonzalez is about to have a very happy birthday. For her 30th, which is this week, Gonzalez started a 30-day fundraiser to give 30 new backpacks to students in the Kick Start afterschool program at Crescent Town. Two weeks in, Gonzalez was just one backpack short of her 30-backpack goal. Encouraged by the response, and after learning that Neighbourhood Link’s Kick Start program usually draws 60 students in the school year, Gonzalez decided to double her goal. “What’s really exciting is that I’ve been getting donations from complete strangers,” she said. “It’s amazing.” Each backpack will come with a lunch box, water bottle, pencil case, school supplies and a $10 gift card inside. As it happens, each one costs $30. As a banker at RBC, it’s no surprise that Gonzalez is handy with numbers, even the somewhat dreaded number 30. But one reason she is excited to help people who struggle with the cost of school supplies is that she remembers what it’s like. Growing up in North York as the youngest of four kids in a single-parent home, Gonzalez said money was often tight. In the school cafeteria, that showed.

Other kids teased Gonzalez for having water instead of a juice box, or for bringing her sandwiches in an empty milk bag instead of a Ziplock. Embarrassed, Gonzalez starting eating her lunch in a washroom stall. If friends asked where she had eaten her lunch, she would say she’d eaten it quickly, or earlier. “I didn’t ever want anyone to feel sorry for me, and I don’t to this day,” she said. All in all, Gonzalez said, her childhood felt normal and happy to her. She gives kudos to her mom, who immigrated to Canada, raised four kids, learned English, and found time to help out fellow newcomers – something that inspired Gonzalez to volunteer for the United Way, which connected her with the Crescent Town Kick Start program this summer. With a little more than a week to go, Gonzales is thinking about adding a little note in each backpack, and what she might say. “I want these kids to feel like everybody else,” she said. “I just think you have a different life story to tell.” To find out more, visit “Veronica’s 30 for $30 in 30” Facebook page. Donations can be made by email transfer to 30for30in30@gmail.com, or by selecting the campaign from the drop-down menu of Neighbourhood Link’s donations page on Canada Helps.

Who is accountable for damage done by unruly mob? AFTER MIDNIGHT on July 24 a mob of mostly young and several drunk people gathered at the foot of Balsam Avenue. This was apparently the second night in a row a large group gathered there after being moved off Queen Street as the jazz festival ended for the night. They destroyed city signs and a fence barrier, then jumped all over a Beck taxicab trying to turn around to avoid the group. One of the younger, drunker men then jumped on the trunk of the taxi which accelerated away, depositing him several yards up the street. This got the whole mob excited and they began running north towards Queen Street, throwing bags of garbage and running up and over parked cars – one of which was mine. The young (presumably drunk) man who scrambled over the first car landed on the hood of mine, denting it completely. This is a dent that cannot be easily removed and will necessitate an insurance claim with a

deductible of $500, or an out-of-insurance repair cost. This incident was reported to 911 who initially sent a fire truck and, belatedly, two police cruisers, the second of which told me how and where to file a report. Those of us who live in between the jazz festival and the beach suffer the inconvenience of this event year after year. I am now a property damage victim of this group of festival attendees who were eventually chased by the police north of Queen Street. The few of us who were outside and witnessed all of this unruly destructive behaviour were outnumbered by the mob and I was sworn at by some of the more offensive ones as they ran by. I am very unhappy, as are my neighbours. If organizers of the festival expect residents of the Beach to continue to support this event, there should be a contingency fund to pay for damage in incidents like this.

There is no reason at all why any resident should be inconvenienced or out of pocket while organizers profit from this event. Patrick Flynn Balsam Avenue

Treatment plant needs leash enforcement YOUR ARTICLE on the parks and the photo of dogs at the R. C. Harris Water Treatment Plant proves the point that this on-leash area has become in reality an off-leash area for dogs. There is no enforcement anywhere on the R.C. Harris ground: the beach in the summer, and the upper lawn and the lower lawn where dog owners take their dogs for off leash exercise every day year-round.

There is already an extensive area of the beach between Silver Birch and Nursewood set aside for off-leash dogs. I can only conclude that the staff at the plant turn a blind eye because it is too much trouble to insist on enforcement in this grey area, not a public park and not private property either, or that they love dogs and are happy to see the owners turn the whole property into an unofficial off-leash zone. This is the reality: dog owners now regard free use of the whole grounds by their dogs as their right and are aggressive to anyone who questions them. Only rigid enforcement of the leash bylaw will change this situation, which is extremely annoying to people who would like to walk on the lawns and use the beach without dogs running around freely. Is it too much to ask that this bylaw be enforced? Name withheld

The sounds of South Asia At right, five-year-old Tristan Joseph plays drums for the first time with help from his father Harry and members of Dhol Circle, one the many music and dance groups that performed at the Festival of South Asia in the Gerrard India Bazaar on August 15 and 16.

BEACH HILL swimmer Graysen Bernard, a 13 year-old student at Bowmore Public School, had a great summer racing at provincial and national competitions. At the provincial championship in Nepean in early July, he picked up seven medals in eight events, including a gold in the 1500m freestyle. He also won gold in the 2 km 13 year-old age group at the Swim Ontario open water championship in Brampton. From July 29 to August 2, Bernard travelled to Quebec City for the Canadian Age Group Championship. More than 800 athletes aged 12 to 17 from across the country took part. Bernard won a gold, four silver, and a bronze medal as a solo swimmer, and took part in three other gold medal relay teams as well. His gold was in the 200m freestyle, with a time of 2:17.92. The silver medals were for the 100m freestyle, and the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke. His bronze medal was earned in the 400m individual medley.

With three teammates Bernard took part in three gold medal relay performances, including the 400m and 800m freestyle and the 400m medley.

ONLY A few days remain in Beacher Adam Paulin’s remarkable crowdfunding campaign. Paulin claims his Thin Ice clothing line helps users lose weight just by wearing his specially-designed vest or insoles. His prototypes are based on the body’s response to cold environments, which trigger physiological responses that also burn calories. Pre-orders and funding pledges have come in at an astounding rate, resulting in Paulin overshooting his $15,000 goal by more than 2,600 per cent. At press time, Thin Ice had raised more than $390,000. Keep an eye out on this season’s Dragon’s Den for an appearance by Paulin and Thin Ice. For more information see thiniceweightloss.com.

NEI GHBOURHOOD Everyone has a Story to Tell

Bowmore swimmer cheers on his inspiration By Andrew Hudson

DIVING IN a backyard pool or circled by fish in the Bahamas, Hercules Stergiou loves to swim. This summer, the soon-to-be Grade 3 student got to cheer on the athlete who gave him a big push in swimming – Paralympian Adam Purdy. Hercules was in the front row and wearing a homemade “#Purdy” shirt on Aug. 14, when Purdy won a silver medal in the 100-metre backstroke at the Parapan Am Games. Hercules later got to hold that medal when he and his parents met Purdy after the competition. It was the second time Hercules has met the three-time Paralympian swimmer, who also won bronze medals in the 50-metre butterfly and the 4x50-metre medley relay this year. Purdy’s condition means he has limited use of all his limbs, but that hasn’t kept the 34-year-old from a long and successful career at the Paralympics and IPC World Championships. Hercules first met Purdy in December 2013, when Purdy spoke at Bowmore Road Public School for “I Can Day” – the same day Hercules came home and told his parents he wanted to swim. “I think I was just inspired,” says the seven-year-old Hercules, who shares a heroic name with his Greek grandfather. “I wanted to see what it was actually like.”

“He is a fish,” said his mother Kristina. In two summers, Hercules has learned all the basic swimming strokes, tried snorkelling, and can now dive underwater for almost a minute at a time. Those are great skills for anyone, but even more so for Hercules, who did it all despite his cerebral palsy. Kristina said when Hercules was younger she was told he might not live, then that he might not walk, and later that he would always need a walker. Today, she said, Hercules’ walker is parked in the basement. He is wearing summer sandals for the first time in his life, because he doesn’t always need his braces. “It’s not luck,” she said. “It’s his drive.” Hercules also has a lot of fans – not least of which is his dad, Jim. When Hercules joined in a school swim meet at Bowmore, Kristina said her husband’s cheers echoed everywhere. “Oh yeah,” said Hercules with a grin. He could hear his dad even through the water. Besides his Bowmore coaches Mr. Fenton and Mr. Snowden, who Kristina called “epic” and “phenomenal” teachers, Hercules has a great coach right at home. Growing up in the Bahamas, Kristina was a pro swimmer with the Dolphins Swim Club. Now, when they go back to her father’s beach, she has Hercules hold onto her back so they can swim

Bowmore student Hercules Stergiou hasn’t let cerebral palsy slow him down at all. Stergiou first met Paralympian Adam Purdy in 2013, and got to cheer on his favourite swimmer at the Parapan Am Games on Aug. 14. Purdy was Stergiou’s inspiration for learning to swim – a sport he’s taken to like, well, a fish to water.

way out into the ocean. “Mind you, my husband freaks out,” Kristina said. “But I bring a spear, and we’re okay.” That’s a fishing spear, with a sling-shot tip – just in case a barracuda or a nurse shark comes over to say hello. “We won’t do lakes, but we’ll do

black oceans because that’s what we’re used to,” she said, smiling. “Nothing compares to the Bahamian beaches.” Safe from barracudas at the Parapan Am Games, Kristina said she was moved not only by what she saw in the pool, but also by people in the stands. There was Hercules’ former

principal, Thelma Sambrook, who joined them with a poster that said ‘Go Adam Go!’ as well as the whole Purdy family, who recognized Hercules and insisted he and his crew sit right up front with them. “They were the most down-toearth people,” Kristina said. “They talked with Hercules just like they’d always known him.”

Wynne, who toured the new Chest Centre at Toronto East General Hospital earlier in the day, also spoke with and took questions from Centre 55’s camp counsellors. Asked how she got her start in politics, Wynne said her first formal role came after she was elected as a school trustee in 2000. But she told Centre 55’s counsellors, many of whom are in high school or just about to start Grade 9, that her first real political action was as a high school student. “In those years, girls were not allowed to wear pants to school,” she Licensed non-profit day care for ages 2 1/2 to 12 Subsidy spaces available

said. “We had to wear skirts.” “That was the fight that I took on when I was in Grade 9 and Grade 10.” Wynne said she and a group of friends would go to school in pants, be sent home, and return to school with letters from their parents saying it was fine for them to wear pants. Finally, the girls spoke up at the school board, which eventually changed the dress code. “I wasn’t involved in party politics until I was much older, but I was involved in questioning who was making decisions,” she said. “Are they listening to people who are going to be affected by those decisions? Is there a dialogue between all those people?”

TWO BEACHERS will be performing as part of Buskerfest, running from Aug. 27 to 30 on Yonge Street downtown. Bassoonist Susan Durnin and percussionist Laura Savage are part of Das Fagott Mannschaft, a cheekilynamed group whose name is German for ‘The Bassoon Team.’ The classically trained ensemble performs instrumental covers of pop and rock songs. Durnin is a founding member of the group, and was educated at the University of Manitoba and the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She has been principal bassoonist with several orchestras, including the Winnipeg Youth Symphony and the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. She has played with the Kitchener-Waterloo, Thunder Bay, Sudbury, and Niagara Symphony Orchestras. Her taste also extends to the modern, having performed at the Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium. She is preparing to premiere a work for electric bassoon by Adam Vidiskis. Savage has been teaching and playing professionally for a decade, after receiving her music performance degree from the University of Toronto. She has played with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Via Salzburg Chamber Ensemble, and at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. She is at present the principal percussionist for the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra, bandleader and drummer for the Soul Condition Dance Band, and a drummer with the Regimental Band of the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada.

IN EARLY 2014, local artist Jennifer Linton launched a crowdfunding campaign for an animated short film she was producing, called Toronto Alice. The campaign was a success – Linton’s modest goal of $3,000 was exceeded by more than $700. Professional sound production and voice acting was secured, and the project, a stop-motion animated film animated with her cutout paper creations, was completed and has been submitted to numerous festivals. his has been a golden summer of sports in Toronto. In celebration of the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games the Toronto Reference Library (Yonge and Bloor) is hosting a wonderfully nostalgic exhibit looking back at sport and recreation in a simpler time. Toronto’s Sporting Past includes early photos of the Balmy Beach Club and Toronto Hunt Club and runs until Sept. 5. The Library is presenting screenings of films that exemplify the spirit of competition: The Boy in Blue, Chariots of Fire, The Rocket, and 42, the courageous story of Jackie Robinson (Aug. 26, 2 p.m.). The Boy in Blue (1986) stars Nicolas Cage as Toronto’s first sporting hero, Ned Hanlan (1855-1908), the worldchampion sculler in the 1880s, “the fastest man who ever sat in a boat.” The film is less than accurate, but does feature the 1887 steamship RMS Segwun in Gravenhurst. Before television came along, big crowds turned out to watch local sporting events like rowing, lacrosse, football, cycling and baseball. Since its early days as a summer resort, the Beach has had a long tradition of athletic excellence, including horse racing at Woodbine (1875), the third oldest golf club in North America (Toronto Golf, 1876) and the many achievements of the Balmy Beach Club, the “Legend by the Lake.” Sport has always been a favourite topic for movies. The very first feature film ever made in the Beach included scenes from an exhibition rugby football match (no forward passing) played on Dec. 5, 1914. The Toronto Daily Star reported, “On Saturday afternoon at Scarboro Beach rugby fans will have an opportunity of again seeing Parkdale Canoe Club and Balmy Beach in action with

Dramatic scenes with actors were also shot in front of the 2,000 cheering spectators at Toronto Athletic Field beside the Scarboro Beach Amusement Park. Motion pictures had been shown at the park as early as 1907 when it opened, but this was something new and exciting. The stadium included a covered grandstand, clubhouse, bleachers and a track for cycling races. Author Morley Callaghan was impressed: “There was no lovelier field in North America than Scarboro Beach with its stands facing the lake and the grass in the sunlight always appearing greener there than any other place.” By 1915 cinema emerged as an art form in its own right and movie-going became respectable, but it would be more than half a century before another feature film would be made in the Beach. The football footage was included in a patriotic military film, Canada in Peace and War, released as a “three-reeler” in February 1915. It combined newsreels with a fictional storyline to present “the most interesting moving picture shown in Toronto” (Sunday World). Canadian soldiers were shown marching and a mock battle scene “created a big sensation both in public and press.” It is doubtful if any copies of these silent films survive. In January 1916 the entire Balmy Beach football team enlisted. The club had almost 100 men in khaki and many would not return. Long ago, First Nations used lacrosse to resolve conflicts between tribes as an alternative to war. Lacrosse was believed to be a gift from the Creator. Wouldn’t it be great if athletes competed just on sporting fields instead of battlefields and the only shooting was done by cameras? This week marks the 110th anniversary of the official opening of the

Balmy Beach Club on Aug. 25, 1905. To learn more, check out Kevin McConnell’s beautifully-illustrated The History of the Balmy Beach Club (2012), available at Beaches Library. The gold and blue Balmy Beach “Beachers” went on to win the Grey Cup in 1927 and 1930. Club heroes include Roy Nurse (canoeing wins at the 1924 Olympics), Ab Box (football) and the great “Moaner” himself, Ted Reeve (football, lacrosse). A classic theme for sports films is the triumph of an individual or team in overcoming adversity. The Balmy Beach Club has survived two devastating fires, in 1936 and 1963. In the muddy 1930 Grey Cup game, an injured Ted Reeve came back on the field to block a punt and ensure an 11-6 victory. Reeve later wrote: “When I was young and in my prime I used to block kicks all the time But now that I am old and grey I only block them once a day. Sport brings Canadians together. Go Jays Go! Win one for the Moaner. If we lose, remember, “there’s no crying in baseball!” Note: For “snapshots” of “Ontario’s Sport Heritage” and some terrific photos of athletes like Ned Hanlan and Tom Longboat, look for Heritage Matters at libraries or at heritagetrust.on.ca. The free publication includes an article (“Sport matters: The value of sport to society”) by that great runner from the Beach, Professor Bruce Kidd.

I WAS already hanging out the seventhstorey window when I remembered why the fireman said “bend your knees.” Someone who has never rappelled down the side of the Toronto Fire Academy before might get a little tense, even on a sunny day, even with three firefighters working the ropes above. And if that straight-legged rookie should push out too far from the wall, so that his boot heels no longer touch the concrete, and his tip-toes are just scraping by… That’s when he might be real glad to suddenly touch ground, nice as the view was, and learn nothing more about how it might have looked after flipping upside-down. Firefighting in Toronto is changing, and not only because the buildings are getting taller and tougher to scale. At a day-in-the-life event called Fire Ops 101, firefighters at the Eastern Avenue academy showed a bunch of politicians and a few hapless reporters what 25°C feels like in bunker gear (“Basically it’s like wearing a snowsuit”), before hauling a firehose into a burning building and then dousing a flaming car called “Car-B-Que.”

Wearing a scuba-like mask and air tank, all that smoke and fire felt real enough. After the burning building drill, I came out shaking. But throughout the day, what surprised me most were the scenarios with no flames at all. Firefighter Bernice Halsband works on one of Toronto’s two Hazmat trucks. It’s less a fire truck than a rolling science lab. Not long before Fire Ops, Halsband responded to a “white powder” call, together with a police bomb technician and a paramedic, all of them trained in counter-terrorism. Someone had been mailed a suspicious envelope. Halsband walked into the room with radiation detectors and meters to detect four types of hazardous gas and one to watch the oxygen level. She ran a test for blister and nerve agents. When that came up negative, Halsband let the bomb tech in, who did a “flash test” to see if the stuff in the envelope was combustible. It wasn’t. Another test showed no biohazards, and a pH test showed it was slightly basic. “The substance we tested was greyish, powdery,” Halsband said. “It looked

like pencil shavings.” Finally, Halsband tested some of the powder with a Haz ID — a mass spectrometer that can identify a material by firing a laser through it. “It told us it was tri-base chloroethylene,” she said. “It was bone ash.” Halsband said the Haz ID can pick out thousands of chemical compounds, even recognizing Windex and other name-brand products. But there are times a firefighter can identify whether materials are toxic without a fancy gizmo. “I had a couch fire on a balcony once, and I couldn’t believe the colours,” she said. Whatever it was made of, the couch burned bright blue and purple, yellow and green. “I was mesmerized,” she said. “My bunker suit smelled so weird afterwards. It’s unbelievable what’s out there these days.” Dr. Michael Feldman would agree, but he might add that some of the unbelievable things out there are living people. Dr. Feldman is medical director of Toronto’s EMS Special Operations program, and he oversees the development of Toronto Fire Services’ CPR program. When he was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, Dr. Feldman said that when someone was found without vital signs, people usually called a coroner. Few knew CPR. Today, thanks to better CPR, defibrillators, and better communication between responders and ER doctors, about 9 per cent of Toronto’s cardiac arrest victims who are found without vital signs go on to make full recoveries. That’s well over 100 people a year. “We can literally fill rooms like this, every single year, with people who’ve gone home alive without brain damage,” he said. “It really is a modern miracle. They were truly, actually dead.” Dr. Feldman said he keeps telling firefighters, though he admits they don’t always like to hear it, that with the little defibrillator machines they carry in their trucks, they will save more lives over their careers than with all their firefighting and rescues combined. Sidney Zigah is a six-year Toronto firefighter who knows his CPR, and has climbed into and been taped inside a Level-A Hazmat suit. But Zigah works on one of five specialized units in Toronto that are equipped and trained for all kinds of other emergencies: car-accident extractions, cliffside rescues, lifting people out of confined spaces.

Beach Metro News reporter Andrew Hudson joins other members of Fire Ops 101 in trying to cool and control a simulated rail car fire at the Toronto Fire Academy on Eastern Avenue. One firefighter said if such a fire were real, given the hot summer weather, the heavy bunker suits, and heat of the flames, firefighters would likely have to rotate out after going through two tanks of air because their own core temperature would get so high. Below, a flaming “Car-B-Que.” Two days after Fire Ops 101, one of the “squad” units got a call near Blue Mountain, where a man had been stuck in a 12-metre crevice overnight. They are the people to call when your threeyear-old sticks his finger into the perforated post of a stop sign – the ones who will grind off the post a few inches above and below the finger, then follow to the hospital and see if the doctor or surgeon needs some finer work. But for all his specialized training and the new challenges he faces, Zigah taught me a small but important lesson in firefighting tradition. After guiding me through all the beeps and gauges on my compressedair tank, Zigah took a minute to show me how firefighters always leave their bunker pants rolled over their boots, ready to step into. It’s something that goes way back, to the days when firefighters wore hip waders and oversized raincoats, he says, and it hasn’t changed. A firefighter is always ready to go.

Bok Choy: 6 baby bok choy (about 5 inches/12 cm) 1/4 cup (60 mL) rice vinegar 3 tbsp (45 mL) vegetable oil 1 tbsp (15 mL) sodium-reduced soy sauce 1½ tsp (7 mL) granulated sugar Freshly grated black pepper Place tenderloins on cutting board. Slice lengthwise almost but not all the way through; open like a book, pressing down to flatten. Place in large shallow dish. In small bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, mustard, ginger and garlic, reserving 3 tbsp (45 mL) of marinade. Pour remaining marinade over pork and turn to coat. Cover and marinate for at least 30 minutes or for up to four

hours in the refrigerator, turning occasionally. Remove pork from marinade and discard marinade. Place on greased grill over medium-high heat. Grill covered, basting with reserved marinade for 15 to 20 minutes or until an internal temperature of 160˚F (71˚C) has been reached. Remove to cutting board and cover loosely with foil. Cut bok choy lengthwise; rinse thoroughly under cold water. Drain and pat dry. In medium bowl combine vinegar, oil, soy sauce, sugar and pepper to taste. Just before grilling toss bok choy with dressing and remove, letting any excess drip back into bowl. Place bok choy cut side down over medium-low heat. Grill for eight to 10 minutes or until tender-crisp, turning once. Return to dressing in bowl and toss to coat. Thinly slice pork diagonally and serve with grilled bok choy. bought a T-shirt this summer with a great saying printed on the front: “When nothing goes right – go left.” If the 11-years-young beagle pictured at right were to have her own motto that would be it. She’s got a quirky sense of humour. She’s also got brilliant navigating skills when following life’s crazy road map. Some might say she’s all over the map. But for as long as I’ve known Franky, she’s never steered me wrong. There’s something to be said for going in every direction at once. If anyone can prove the journey is far better than the destination, it’s Franky. I first met Franky at the end of May. By then, she’d already had massive surgery to rid her of the largest tumour I’d ever seen. She’d been delivered straight to Beaches Animal Hospital by the investigating officer who rescued her. The tumour had been growing on her chest over the last few years. At the time of removal, it was the size of a large watermelon – almost half her body weight. Franky could barely walk. Not only was Franky unable to explore the world at regular beagle speed, she was in great discomfort even when parked. Fortunately, her owner chose to do the right thing when these facts were gently explained to her. Financially unable to cover the medical costs, she surrendered Franky to her local animal shelter in hopes of giving her dog the best possible outcome. At that moment, a new journey was mapped out for Franky. From the compassionate investigator offering her the chance to be a beagle again, to the surgical team that successfully removed the benign mass, to her recovery caregivers at Big On Beagles Rescue, Franky was finally pointed in the right direction. Like everything with Franky, recovery has been speedy. Even before the incision site fully healed, she was revving her engine. And when our vets ultimately gave her the green light, she put paw to pedal leaving her Elizabethan collar in a cloud of dust. The fur has been flying ever since – as her devoted foster mom, I should know. In the mornings, Franky is the first to spring to her feet in anticipation of breakfast, otherwise known as her morning fuel injection. If the rest of us don’t move fast enough, she’ll lay on the horn. On her walks, Franky prefers to skip or, as I like to call it, pop wheelies. At our farm, she likes nothing better than to go off-road in search of wildlife. Not that she wants to run any over, mind you. Franky loves to play with all creatures great, small and … slimy. She’s especially delighted at coming nose to nose with the odd snake. I, on the other hand, am not so delighted. Even drag racers get tired eventually. If the stars align, Miss Independence will sometimes choose my lap as her

parking spot and snooze the night away while we watch a movie. But if I dare get up for popcorn, she switches from park to drive in an instant. There are fireflies to chase after dark! Franky is always moving forward, never in reverse. The only reminder of her past is in her unique begging stance. You can’t exactly call it ‘sitting pretty’ for a treat, but it’s classic Franky. Instead of daintily putting her two front paws together like a normal dog, she clumsily splays them out to accommodate that phantom giant watermelon she used to carry between them. That’s one dent in the bodywork I never want her to fix. Unfortunately, there are a few other dents recently discovered that we desperately wish we could fix. Four new lumps have surfaced on our precious little speedster. Unlike the watermelon, these lumps have been identified as mast cell tumours. Also unlike the watermelon, surgery won’t fix these. But here’s where that T-shirt saying comes in handy. Since nothing appears to be going right, we’ll go left on this crazy road called life and focus on all the adventure our headlights can illuminate in front of us. With a daily dose of steroids and some luck of the Irish, Franky may still have another two to three years of pleasure cruising life’s highway. Dents and all, Franky is up for adoption. Some folks might not see the beauty in adopting an old dog, much less one with cancer. Some folks don’t like the idea of getting attached and then having to say goodbye too soon. But if you’ve ever driven a classic car down a country road without a map or a care in the world on a perfect bluesky day, you discover something almost immediately: it’s worth the drive. These work décor store, but with a bit of effort you can find really interesting items to use as art in unexpected places. Look through your own home to find things you may already have like tattered maps, old black and white photos and other memorabilia. Flea markets and antique shops often have old advertising posters, vintage postcards and other objects that may be suitable for framing. These kinds of out-of-the-ordinary things become eye-catching works once framed and hung on your wall. There are endless possibilities when framing up artwork. Again, resist the urge to just purchase a standard, boring frame and you will be rewarded with something that has more style and substance once finished. great since they are essentially a picture frame without a back. I painted the wood frame white so it would contrast the dark colour of the blueprint, and cleaned up the hardware (which coincidentally turned out to be copper coloured under all the paint). I cut a piece of quarter-inch masonite for backing and lined it with acid-free illustration board, then mounted the blueprint to that and attached it to the frame with a nail gun. The result is quite different looking but suits my space perfectly. One style of artwork, two techniques and two very different looks.

Blueprints as art My partner-in-flea Brigid and I came across some very cool blueprints of old Toronto schools and buildings at The Leslieville Flea that were easy on the pocket. We decided to try framing them in completely different ways to change the look to suit our own tastes. Our styles and houses are quite different and the methods we used reflected that. Brigid had her blueprints matted and framed professionally. She chose a copper frame that nicely played up the blue in the print. It looks crisp and modern, with an industrial feel. There are many varieties of deceivingly healthy-looking organic processed foods on the shelves today geared to our children including granola bars, dried fruit snacks, cookies, mini cakes, pretzels, etc … Many are excessively high in sugar, fat and salt and offer little to no nourishment – similar to the non- organic variety. Organic produce provides many health benefits and should make up a large part of our diet when possible. But when it comes to processed and highly refined snacks and treats don’t be swayed by the organic logo. After all, no matter how you slice it, cake is still cake … organic or not.

Open Doors: A Glimpse into Beach Houses of Worship

What are you nourishing yourself with? By Lucy Reid, Incumbent, Church of St. Aidan

D

o you worry about what your kids are eating? Or what your own diet is like? We are currently sharing our home with a delightful two-year-old and her mother, and food plays a significant role in this little girl’s life. She loves goldfish crackers and grapes and yogurt – sometimes all together. She’d probably eat them exclusively day in and day out if she could. But I watch her mother making sure that she eats other foods too, so that she gets all the nutrients she needs. It’s the same with adults: we have our favourite foods and drinks. One of the delights of summertime for me is being able to get plentiful fresh local vegetables and fruits. Instead of tired, tasteless strawberries that grow year-round in California and get treated with who-knows-what before being transported all the way here, I relish the sweet, juicy ones that have grown just a few kilometres away. Food nourishes our bodies. But what about our souls? What nourishment are we giving our inner life? What are we filling our hearts and minds with? For many of us, we exist on a diet of stress, anxiety and busyness, often running on empty and feeling strung out. And we live within a culture that has powerful messages about what to consume, centred around material things – bigger, newer, better. It’s a toxic combination that leads nowhere healthy.

Maybe that’s why a vacation in a cottage or campground feels so good. Suddenly we’re in a place defined by words like simplicity, nature, slowing down, peace. Those evenings spent watching the sun go down and the stars come out are food for the soul. The simpler, fresher meals, the low-tech activities, the family time – they can all be nourishing in a profound way. But what happens when normal life resumes? I remember the friction building even on our way home from a family summer vacation, as we began getting mentally geared up for the work and school world, with its pressures and complexities. How do you continue to nurture your soul in ordinary time? In the Christian tradition Jesus describes himself as the bread of life. He uses the familiar symbols of bread and wine to mean himself and his path, and urges his followers to eat and drink of him. In many churches the eucharist is celebrated regularly with shared bread and wine, recalling those words of Jesus. His followers to this day seek to be nourished by him, through prayer, worship, studying the sacred texts, and serving the needs of the world. Does that sound a bit too religious for where you are? Then you might want to consider learning to meditate (an ancient form of Christian prayer), joining a study group on a spiritual theme, volunteering, or bringing your kids to a program where they can learn and ask questions. St. Aidan’s (staidansinthebeach.com), like

many local churches, offers opportunities in all of these ways for you to nourish your soul. Spiritual food isn’t about rules and regulations, or being very religious, or believing certain things. It’s about creating space so that the spirit of God can move within you and nourish you. Taste and see.
