ARTIST JOHN Kuna has been selected to create the new mural which will appear on the wall of the Foodland grocery store on Queen Street East at Lee Avenue in the Beach. Mural Routes and Foodland are partnering on the plan to produce the new mural which is intended to be unveiled on July 27 as part of the Beaches Jazz Festival celebrations. The new mural will replace the old one which had to be removed in the fall of last year due to cracks in the wall which had made it unsafe. That mural, called Beach Got Rhythm, had been created by artist Rudolf Stussi and his son Errol in 2007 and depicted a number of Beach landmarks and jazz musicians. Kuna has been an artist and muralist for more than 20 years, having created more than 40 works and murals across Canada, the United States and Europe. He has a strong connection to the Beach area as his first studio was on Queen Street East, and he would often join fellow artists to work on painting landscapes in the area. “Foodland has been a proud part of the Beach community for over a decade. The project aims to produce a new mural that celebrates Foodland’s commitment to Continued on Page 4

MEMBERS OF the Beach community are coming together to help the family of a six-year-old boy diagnosed with brain and spine cancer. In January, Cindi Shoot’s son Ethan was diagnosed and it changed the lives of the Main Street and Danforth Avenue area family. Ethan and his mom Cindi are at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee at the moment as he undergoes treatments. Community members heard about what the family is dealing
with through word of mouth and are now coming together to help raise funds for Cindi, who is a single mom raising Ethan and his sister Chloe. A silent auction and bake sale will be held on Saturday, May 4 to benefit the family. The event will take place at the Beaches Recreation Centre, 6 Williamson Rd., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will be going towards treatment costs for Ethan. Organizers of the fundraiser are local residents Gaby Jacob, Therese Occhipinti and Adrienne Scott. Continued on Page 4

AMANDA MUNDAY is aware of the systemic barriers of being a woman in business, and that’s why she emailed women who own and operate businesses in the Danforth community to join her on Monday, April 15, to talk about entrepreneurial experiences and opportunities. They gathered at The
Workaround space at 2080 Danforth Ave. and were joined by Canada’s Minister of Small Business and Export Promotion Mary Ng, Toronto-Danforth MP Julie Dabrusin and Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel ErskineSmith. Munday is the Founder and CEO of The Workaround, which hosted the event to celebrate women in business. The Workaround offers a parent-friendly workspace, providing support and space to working parents who need flexibility. Members can purchase daily, monthly and unlimited memberships that will give them access to childcare at the space while they work. “I noticed along Coxwell and Main on the Danforth, that there are a high number of women- owned business,” Munday said. “I noticed that women
run this town. I thought we should celebrate this! I connected with the MPs and business owners through email about this event.” Ng spoke about doubling the number of female entrepreneurs in Canada by 2025. One way to do this is by modernizing parental leave; a change that will encourage the sharing of domestic labour. “A woman can grow in her business, excel in her profession and excel in what she chooses to be, while being a mom,” said Ng. Ann Poochareon was also a spotlight of the afternoon as she received a $100,000 investment from the Ministry of Small Business and Export Promotion’s Women Entrepreneurship Fund for her start up, Little Robot Friends at 1832 Danforth Ave. Two women who once worked for large multinational corporations but decided to step out of their

BEACHES-EAST YORK MPP Rima Berns-McGown is thrilled to be a member of the NDP’s history-making Black Caucus. The caucus is the first of its kind in Ontario and looks forward to tackling systemic anti-black racism in every area of public policy in Ontario. McGown said this is something the community requested. As a biracial Ontarian who was born in South Africa, she wants to push the envelope on public conversations on what it means to be mixed in Ontario. She mentioned how her personal family history and
experience have been affected by anti-black racism. She said she is enthusiastic to make systemic change to ensure that the province works for all identities. “As the Critic for Poverty and Homelessness, I am very aware of the ways in which anti-black racism fuels the systems that push black people into and keep them in poverty – and I am excited to work actively to counter those systems,” McGown said. This is a first in Ontario’s history. The partnership between the NDP and the black community is a way to cultivate relationship and representation. Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath said she was
proud to announce the formation of the Black Caucus. “Black community members should see themselves represented and respected when they look at their government. Black Canadian leaders must be at the table when every decision is made. That’s why I’m so proud to announce the formal creation of the Ontario NDP’s Black Caucus, chaired by our Anti-Racism Critic and MPP for Kitchener Centre, Laura Mae Lindo,” said Horwath in a press release. Other members of the NDP’s Black Caucus are York South-Weston MPP Faisal Hassan; Toronto – St. Paul’s MPP Dr. Jill Andrew; and Brampton North MPP Kevin Yarde.

Sand or clay? Dealing with Beach soil Mary Fran McQuade Mary Fran McQuade is a local writer specializing in gardening and lifestyle
MY VERY first job in Toronto was working in Eaton’s flower shop. One of my coworkers was so good at getting people to buy that my boss often said, “She could sell dirt!” I’ve often laughed ironically to myself since then. Sell dirt? Heck, everyone does that. But plain old dirt has always had a bad reputation. Cheap as dirt. Dirty dog. Dirty movies. One professional gardener I know often tells people who talk about “dirt” to say “soil” instead. But I kind of like playing in the dirt. (Who plays in the soil, anyway?) And Canadian author and poet Margaret Atwood sides with me. “In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt” is one of her most famous quotes. Sand or clay? Whether you call it dirt or soil, it’s where a garden begins. Here in the Beach, we seem to go from one extreme to the other – either dry sand or dense clay (generally in patches north of Kingston Road). Both have their benefits, believe it or not – but both are, on the whole, a pain in the back to deal with. First, the good news. If you have sandy soil, bulbs will do well for you. Sand drains quickly, so bulbs won’t rot from too much water. You also won’t have to worry about mosquitoes laying eggs in puddles in your yard. And sandy soil is easy to dig. Clay soil, on the other hand, is fairly fertile, so you don’t have to add much artificial fertilizer. It holds water, of course, so you can plant things that like to have their feet wet.
PHOTO: SUBMITTED
A raised bed can solve clay soil’s drainage problems. Build the beds two or even three boards high. And now, the bad stuff. Water drains through sand as soon as it hits the surface. Whatever nutrients the soil has also drain away quickly, so you have to work extra hard to keep replenishing fertility. Plus, you have to take special care to make sure your newly planted treasures are watered often during their first growing season. Clay is hard – literally – to dig. When it dries out, it cracks and crumbles on the surface, and it can be difficult to get water down to the roots of a plant. Bringing clay soil back from the dead takes a lot of time and patience.
How to make it better But whether you’re coping with sand or clay, there are some things you can do to make your sad dirt better. • Soil scientists now say the best solution for both sand and clay is mulching with chipped tree limbs – wood and leaves together. Fungi in the top layer of soil gradually break this down to make looser, more plant-friendly dirt. Current
research says not to till in sand, gravel or any other things, because that destroys those helpful fungi. • To restore nutrients to sandy soil, several local gardeners I know spread composted manure all over their gardens in the spring. You can find it bagged in garden centres or have a load of it delivered if have you space. Google “composted manure Toronto” to find a bulk source. • Another Beacher with an incredibly gorgeous front and back yard nurtures her sandy soil by spreading two giant bags of worm castings (worm poo) over her garden every year. She has a big garden, so those bags hold at least a cubic yard of the stuff, but smaller bags are also available. Google “worm castings Toronto” to find it. • Spreading compost (decomposed plant/vegetable bits) is an easy way to improve sandy soil. You can buy it ready-made or make it yourself in a compost bin or pile. It’s not hard to do – chop everything finely before you put it in, throw in a bit of earth, keep the pile moist but not soggy and mix it up ev-

ery now and then. • The easiest thing to do is simply mulch your dry soil to keep moisture from evaporating. Chopped/shredded leaves are great for this – just go over fallen leaves with a lawn mower – and so are the chipped tree parts mentioned above. (Don’t use bark chips. Any water coming down on them won’t get through to plant roots). • Sadly, clay isn’t as easy to work with as sand is. Chipped tree material does improve it, but it’s slow to work. If you want quick and easy, just put in plants that like heavy soil. Here’s one source for information: www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/ your-garden/help-for-thehome-gardener and enter “plants for clay soil” in the search box. Look for plants that are hardy in zones 5 or below. • If you’re stuck with clay soil and you have the time, energy and money, build some raised beds filled with good soil. Raised Bed Revolution, by Toronto author Tara Nolan, is one book that tells you all you need to know.

In My Opinion
Our health system is under attack, and action is needed now Rima Berns-McGown MPP Beaches—East York Hello Neighbours, Since the leak of the Doug Ford government’s health care bill in February and the subsequent official introduction of Bill 74 in March, my office has received an unprecedented influx of emails from constituents who are afraid of what the bill means for health care in Ontario. Bill 74 is indeed, as the government maintains, a transformative bill. Although it never uses the word “privatization,” it does open the door wide to private entities
seeking to purchase parts of our health care system and to sell private services through it. It also means bundling all sorts of services together — those that currently work well, like Cancer Care Ontario, and those that don’t — under a new super-agency. People have questions and deep concerns. They’re concerned about what Doug Ford is willing to cut in order to balance the books and what privatization of huge swaths of our health care will mean for the quality and accessibility of services across Ontario. Process matters. In addition to the substantive concerns that Ontarians have about the bill, they are also rightly deeply concerned about the way the bill was written
and railroaded through the legislature without any of the customary opportunities for organizations and individuals to have their say, voice their concerns, and attempt to ameliorate bad ideas and make them better. Very little consultation was done prior to the Bill 74’s introduction, and yet less consultation was done afterwards. The government truncated debate and committee time: 1,594 people asked to speak to the committee; only 30 were able to do so. That’s two per cent. A bill of this magnitude usually “travels” the province so that all Ontarians can have their say on its impacts. That didn’t happen either. More than 19,000 pages of written
testimony couldn’t be considered by the committee because there wasn’t time for them to be read. In this shameful state, the bill passed third reading, and into law, the last day the legislature sat before Easter. In addition, the City of Toronto estimates that its Public Health budget will be cut drastically — by $1 billion over 10 years — as public health units in Ontario are reduced from 35 to 10 and the province slashes its financial contributions. As we learned during such public health scares as the SARS epidemic, the work of Public Health is critical. These cuts are dangerous and will hinder the work Public Health does to improve prena-
tal health, vaccinate children, deliver critical student nutrition programs, and keep our drinking water safe. On May 9, we’ll be holding a community conversation on health care at Community Centre 55, 97 Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m. We will be joined by Sarah Downey, president and CEO of Michael Garron Hospital; Matt Kirkham, executive director of the South East Toronto Family Health Team; and Mireille Cheung, director of Primary Health Services at the East End Community Health Centre. They will help us understand the consequences of Bill 74 both provincially and in Toronto’s east end. I look forward to seeing you there.

Impact of climate change can be seen in Beach area The following is a written deputation sent to the City Clerk, City of Toronto, for presentation to councillors at the April 25 Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeing on Compensation for the Cost of Climate Change to the City of Toronto by Beach resident Dominique Bruce. I’m writing to ask you to support Councillor Michael Layton’s motion to have staff report back on the long term costs of Climate Change to the City of Toronto’s infrastructure and to pursue any legal avenues for compensation of these costs from major greenhouse gas emitters.
I live in the Beaches area of Toronto and I have seen the increasing devastation that seasonal storms bring to my neighbourhood. Whether it is increasingly violent windstorms, ice storms or the rise in lake water that covered most of the sand and docks of the Eastern Beaches while also creating a new inland lake at Ashbridges Bay, it is obvious to everyone living in the Beaches that climate change is causing increased destruction in our neighbourhood. The City of Toronto has already spent an enormous amount of taxpayer money to repair the damage of the storms over the last few years.
They have replaced the entire boardwalk and improved the sewage runoff storage areas. Now it is time for the major green house gas emitters to pay their fair share so as not to overburden Toronto taxpayers and to help protect the investment the city has already made in rebuilding, from further damage. I hope the City of Toronto will actively pursue all means of making the major greenhouse gas emitters pay for climate change damage so that taxpayers will be protected. Thank you. Dominique Bruce

A Prayer for Our Boardwalk She gently walks the edge of our shore, With patience and constant station, Leading us past fields and courts of sport Coaxing our rejuvenation. While weaving us through a galaxy Of unknown tongues and togs, She nobly honours His genius bestowed Upon people and their dogs. She fills us with determination To go to the just beyond, And resolve to bear down hard against The harsh winter winds of the pond. She has no time for manicures, Though her beauty is con-
firmed, By loveseats for lost loved ones perched Morning vistas forever returned. I pray you have some time to walk Upon her sandy planks, She can lighten the trials of everyday And fill you with peace and thanks. For she is a gift of this my home, Like you who sit before me. Rewarding for the time we spend, And strengthened in shared glory. Patty Hargreaves

I remember I was a little sad when Scratch Daniels closed its doors. It was a favourite watering hole for many a Beacher. We have Chris Souwand to thank for this photo. It was taken in 1985 for a school project. The building is on the shady side of Queen Street East just by Leuty Avenue. Do you have any old photos sitting in a shoebox like Chris did? TWO TEAMS from Beach Cheer Athletics will be heading to Disney’s ESPN Centre in May to participate in one of the world’s most competitive cheerleading events in the world. The junior teams, Waverunners and Jetstream will compete at the Summit – All Star Cheerleading Championship set to take place from May 3 to 5 in Orlando, Florida at the ESPN Wide World of Sports facility in Disney World. An older team is heading to the world championships. In order to participate, teams must compete for a Summit bid at one of many events held around Canada. Almost 1,000 teams compete each year at the Summit championships. Beach Cheer Athletics was founded by Suzanne McLay and Anne-Marie Joyce in 2013 in the basement of St. Aidan’s

Beach Cheer Athletics will be sending a pair of teams to the Summit - All Star Cheerleading Championships in May in Orlando, Florida. Church on Queen Street East. “It’s the fastest growing sport,” Joyce said. “We’re lucky to be at this phase of cheerleading and many of these kids practice three to five days per week and are so hardworking.” Beach Cheer Athletics has a total of 16 teams and 260 athletes.
Ten-year-old Kenadie Gemus, from the Waverunners team started cheering at age five. In an email her mother, Edna Chua-Gemus, told the Beach Metro News her daughter is loving her fifth season at Beach Cheer Athletics. “She is thrilled that her team worked hard and was
tough enough to win a bid to head down south,” ChuaGemus said. “She knows it is an incredible honour not only to represent her gym but also her province and country at this most prestigious event.” For more information please visit www.cheertheory.com or www.beachcheerathletics.com

IN FEBRUARY and early March of this year, six high school and middle school students from Malvern Collegiate, Glen Ames Senior Public School, and Branksome Hall travelled to Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas to volunteer for the week at Every Child Counts School (ECC). The group consisted of myself, Kyle Deverell, Charlotte Siller, Julia Harvey, Ryan Deverell, Cate Shanahan, Gwen Deverell, and Tammy Coutu. This school, for students with special needs, has a wide variety of children with different abilities and disabilities. The Canadian volunteers spent the week helping the students at the school prepare for their annual concerts, which raise money for the school. From painting props, organizing chairs and furniture, to sitting through entertaining rehearsals, the volunteers instantly felt
welcome and a part of this warm and caring school. We were all so impressed with the talent and effort put in to the performances. The students had been practicing since November, and sold out both shows. One act even included a signing performance, led by the students who cannot speak. The sense of community at this school, where everyone respects each other’s differences and helps out, including wheeling each other, feeding each other and always looking out for each other, is something really amazing. We learned so much from them as they shared their enthusiasm and celebrated little victories each day. As a group of girls aged 13-16 years old, helping out these kids brought us closer together as we lived, ate and volunteered together. We felt so connected to these children, who found

Easter Parade and Egg Hunt fun in the Beach
The Beach celebrated Easter in style with the Toronto Beaches Lions Club Easter Parade on Sunday, April 21 (photos above and below), and the Good Friday Easter Egg Hunt in Kew Gardens (photo at right) on April 19. The parade featured a wide variety of floats and bands as it made its way along Queen Street East, greeted by large crowds. Despite the rainy weather on Good Friday, there was also a big turnout for the Easter Egg hunt which was highlighted by a visit from the Easter Bunny. PARADE PHOTOS: TRISHA SALES

ust the other day I was sitting on the side of a pond by the Brick Works, hoping for a couple shots of some of the returning migrant birds who like to nest in the area. While I came to this spot for that particular reason, in these moments I generally like to sit back, relax, and wait and see what surprises nature has in store for me. I enjoyed the company of red-winged black birds, several of whom were stretching their wings, flying about, and calling for a mate. A small garter snake slithered from the reeds in front of me, giving me a little bit of a start. I was also thrilled to see more than a dozen painted turtles, both small and large, and one of Ontario’s threatened, (likely to be endangered if we

don’t do something soon), Blanding’s turtles sitting on a floating moss pad. While it’s nice and peaceful when nobody else is there to disturb the scene, it would have been nice to have had a witness for what was about to happen. Luckily I had my camera, or I’m not sure anyone would believe me. What happened next was right out of a horror movie: thrilling, captivating, and terrifying. As I was watching the Blanding’s turtle minding his business, I saw movement under the water behind him. Slowly, huge claws came out of the water. They were followed quickly by the head of a massive, I would guess a 100-year-old, snapping turtle. As the rest of him emerged from the depth of the pond, the Blanding’s turtle finally noticed and started to move as quickly as any turtle ever could. I honestly didn’t know what would happen next. As I took my first pictures my
mind was going in a dozen directions at once: would the snapping turtle try to eat the Blanding’s turtle? Could the Blanding’s make it away from danger on it’s own? As the snapper heaved his body onto the moss pad, it turned out he was too heavy and toppled backwards back into the pond. At the same time the Blanding’s had escaped on the other side of the pad and was swimming away to a safe distance. I’ll never know the snapping turtle’s intentions, but after the Blanding’s escape he never tried to get back on the moss pad, and all I could see of him was his nose poking above the water. Did you know that all of our turtles are now on Ontario’s protected species list? While snapping turtles don’t have a lot of predators, every additional car is a potential threat as they frequently cross roads moving from pond to pond. Snappers lay approximately 40-50 eggs at a time, in late
May and early June, but they aren’t mature enough to lay eggs until they are 17 18 years old. Blanding’s reach maturity at 14 and lay approximately 22 eggs. You may recognize these gorgeous turtles by their yellow chin and neck. While we lose many turtles to cars every year, they are also at risk from the racoons and foxes that prey on their eggs. Please do some reading on how to help Ontario’s turtles. You can report when you have seen them, (expecially the Blanding’s, so they can track their populations); you can call wildlife organizations to help an injured turtle; or you can help them across the road. First, be very careful of oncoming traffic for your own sake, and be very careful about grabbing a snapping turtle, as they can cause serious damage to your fingers, hands, or anything they can get their jaws on. Have a great spring.

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto
Beachers care about the environment Bernie Fletcher WE BEACHERS love our dogs and cats, but does living close to a Great Lake and wooded ravines give us a special appreciation of nature? It is amazing that so many local naturalists, artists, authors and filmmakers have been influenced by the natural world around us and have devoted their lives to protecting our environment and wildlife. Throughout our short history Beach residents have rallied against a railroad, expressways, jets, big condos, industrialization, pollution and environmental hazards. During the recent Earth Week families gathered at Glen Stewart Ravine to plant trees, clean up trash and learn about bees and butterflies. The Woman Who Loves Giraffes (2018) When our Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel ErskineSmith recently presented a showing of the wonderful documentary, The Woman Who Loves Giraffes, at the Fox, the demand was so great that a second screening was added. Dr. Anne Innis Dagg herself was on hand for a Q & A along with producer and director Alison Reid, an East End resident. Years before Jane Goodall and Diane Fossey, Dagg was the first scientist to travel to Africa to study animal behaviour in the wild in 1956. Her book became the “bible” for research on giraffes. Like many other animals, the population of this beautiful creature is dwindling to the point it is becoming an endangered species. Reid felt that, “Anne’s story spoke to me”. Her film shows Dagg returning to South Africa decades after
facing so many obstacles in the academic world because of gender discrimination. Flight of the Butterflies (2012) Documentaries are a good way to help us understand our complicated natural world. Canadians have led the way in documentary filmmaking as well as in environmental research, especially in the migration of birds and butterflies. Gene Domagala wrote a fine article recently in Beach Metro News on the Winter Stations at Woodbine Beach and the 40-year long search by Dr. Fred Urquhart (19112002) and his wife Norah (1918-2009) to find the winter grounds of the monarch butterfly in Mexico. Flight of the Butterflies is an IMAX film about this amazing discovery with Gordon Pinsent playing the adult Urquhart. We see a young Fred at Scarborough Bluffs. Urquhart grew up at the foot of Woodbine Avenue right down by the lake and was fascinated by the insects and birds in the marshes and ponds of the day. The famed director Norman Jewison (1926- ) lived nearby above his parents’ store at Queen and Kenilworth and would take his cedar-strip canoe down to the water. Never Cry Wolf (1983) Another renowned Canadian whose youth was influenced by our natural habitats was author and environmental activist Farley Mowat (1921- 2014). Ashbridges Bay was once a huge, swampy marsh teeming with wildlife. Mowat told writer Greg Gatenby about his student days: “I spent most of my time down at Ashbridges Bay walking around in the sewage looking at birds...I hate cities! However, I have to

The Last of the Curlews (1972) Author Fred Bodsworth (1918-2012) of Beech Avenue had a lifelong passion and curiosity for birds. He is best remembered for his fine 1955 novel The Last of the Curlews which was made into an ABC-TV special showing the long, sad migration of a bird that is now extinct. The animated film won an Emmy for Children’s Programming for its cautionary tale about man’s careless destruction of the natural world. It’s not just naturalists who have felt the pull of nature. Bodsworth’s neighbour on Balsam Avenue was landscape painter William Kurelek (1927-1977) whose art included scenes at the beach and in nearby Glen Stewart Ravine. Just down the street on

The Water Brothers (2012-2017) A new generation of Beachers is carrying on the work of naturalists. Alex and Tyler Mifflin grew up in Balmy Beach and worked on Flight of the Butterflies. You may have seen their eco-adventure series, The Water Brothers, on TVO. Our wild friends really are the “canary in the coal mine” warning us of danger. This fragile planet is the only habitat we have. When future generations ask what we did to protect our environment, what will our answer be? “In nature, nothing exists alone.” Rachel Carson (1962)

East York Bulldogs Bantam team helps support Beach Out of the Cold program THIS PAST January, like lots of other people, the families of the East York Bulldogs Bantam Selects hockey team applied themselves to “Marie Kondo-ing” their overflowing closets. However they added one twist. Working together and applying a little social media magic, this local hockey community hoped their closet purging – think outgrown sports gear and toys, unused holiday gifts and more – might generate solid cash for a local charity. So, in February, the 2018/19 Bantam Bulldogs kicked off their first-ever Facebook online auction for the Beach Out of the Cold program. While they modestly aimed to raise a few hundred dollars, thanks to the power of teamwork (and Facebook!), the team watched their decluttering game rise to whole new level. Ultimately, their fundraiser earned a full $1,000 for the local charity. How did they do it? And why this fundraiser in the first place? On top of all the things he’s already hoping to instill in his young players – from puck handling and resilience to good sportsmanship – the Bulldogs’ head coach Doug Skeffington said he’s been wanting to encourage a habit of giving back amongst the team’s teenage players. “We picked our local Toronto Out of the Cold pro-

The East York Bulldogs Bantam Selects hockey team recently undertook a fundraising campaign for the Beach Out of the Cold program. gram in the Beach because our team families have many ties to this program,” Skeffington said. He added that some players and team parents already volunteer for OOTC and that some families been involved with OOTC for decades. Things started quickly thanks to strong support from the East York Hockey Association, the Bantam team admin (Skeffington, assistant coach Chris DeKluyver, team trainer Paul Smith and manager Steve Crane), plus team parent Connie Crane. But the fundraiser really owes its success to the broad support of team families and the Beaches/East York community, said Crane. “Team members and friends donated amazing items, spread the word on social media and everyone bid very generously.”
The Bulldogs found sports gear was a particular hit – especially items like Jays ball caps and a vintage Roy Halladay bobblehead. A few creative auction contributions really helped too. Team parent Michael Shin, for example, a Paddle Canada-certified stand up paddleboard instructor, donated a private lesson which generated brisk bidding (with the prize in the end going to team parent Elaine Gauthier). Recently the Bulldogs delivered auction proceeds to Beach OOTC co-chair Paul Dowling. In thanking the East York Bulldogs organization, Dowling underlined the charity’s huge reliance on local fundraising.
He explained that the local program (led by St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, but currently located at Beach United Church during St. Aidan’s renovations) is one of 16 such programs operated by faith communities in Toronto, and added, “We are staffed by volunteers and funded almost entirely by donations from groups like yours.” Speaking to the charity’s goal, Dowling said, “By providing a hot meal, a warm bed and a friendly smile, we hope to provide a degree of hope in the lives of our guests. We are very grateful to the young people of the East York Bulldogs who have contributed to that work.” For more on Out of the Cold, visit www.dixonhall. org/housingservices

Jacob Andress makes Neil McNeil history by winning OFSAA gold in two team sports NEIL MCNEIL Catholic High School student Jacob Andress has done something no other athlete from the school has ever done: win Ontario gold medals in two different team sports. Andress, who is in Grade 11, made sports history at the school when he was a member of Neil McNeil’s Senior boys hockey team which won the gold medal at last month’s Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championships. He added that gold medal to the one he won in the fall of 2017 as a member of the school’s cross country team at the 2017 OFSAA championships. Cross country and track coach Jason Wood said the school looked into seeing if it had ever had a double-gold medal-winning athlete in two different team sports at OFSAA, and they could not find another one.
19
“He is the only athlete to win a team gold medal with two different sports teams,” explained Wood. In its 61-year history, Neil McNeil has had athletes who have won more than one gold medal at OFSAA but it has either been as a member of a team in one specific sport or individual medals in sports such as track. Hockey coach Peter Ranson said cross country running is a great sport for hockey players as it builds both strength and endurance. “All the sports complement each other, and his fitness level and endurance is very high,” said Ranson of Andress. This was Andress’ first year as a member of Neil’s Senior boys hockey team, having been on the Junior squad last year as a Grade 10 player. He said Neil McNeil’s strong sense of team was one of the reasons they won the OFSAA hockey gold this

get into high school and the courses become much more challenging and the competition more intense. “Cross country is a tough sport; very painful,” he said. An East York resident, Andress attended Diefenbaker Elementary School and Cosburn Middle School before starting high school at Neil McNeil.

Mainstage Theatre Company stages Newsies By Nadia Bensouda
Met. Lic. B-16-964
(5)
MAINSTAGE THEATRE Company, comprised of young artists aged 11-21, is presenting Disney’s Tony award-winning hit musical Newsies in May. Set in turn of the century New York City, back in the days when newspapers were the main vehicles for circulating news, the musical is based on the real-life Newsboy’s Strike of 1899 when young newspaper sellers banded together as a union to fight the then titans of publishing, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolf Hearst. The publishers, facing declining newspaper circulation, raised the price the boys had to pay for each newspaper copy they wanted to sell. The subsequent fight ultimately led to the revision of child labour laws in the city. Mainstage Theatre Company Artistic Director Alain Richer, now in his 15th Mainstage production, thinks this is a perfect production for the young actors. “This musical phenomenon has been winning over hearts for almost a decade now, and fi-

Mainstage Theatre Company’s cast of Newsies includes young performers from across Toronto including the Beach. nally we get to see it on our very own stage! This show speaks to a new generation of musical theatre performers and audiences by bringing a vibrant group of young characters on stage.” The play’s themes resonate in the modern context of young people mobilizing around climate change, protests around proposed education cuts or the #Me Too movement. But it is also a high energy, dazzling good time. The show features 12 memorable numbers (including the rousing anthem Seize the Day, and other favourites Carry-
ing the Banner, and King of New York. The words and music are punctuated with energetic dance sequences, directed by Toronto choreographer Michele Shuster. “Their movement defines their personalities and their work as newsboys. The show has many dance numbers, including a fan-favourite tap number, but for the majority of the show the choreography takes standard musical theatre jazz dance and mixes it with a whole lot of athleticism to create something that is exciting to watch,” she said.

Wee Festial set for May THE WEE Festival of Arts and Culture runs from May 11 to 20 with this year’s performances and arts dedicated to a younger audience. This year’s festival will be geared towards theatre goers in their early childhood with music, theatre, puppetry, dance and aerial arts. Highlights of the shows will include performances from Children’s Garden, Tweet Tweet! and Flying Hearts. Also, there will be theatre shows from Motaek and the Missing Star and Mwana and the Turtle’s Secret. Artistic director of Theatre Direct, Lynda Hill, explained the entire mandate of the festival was chosen for children under the age of six. “From the beginning we saw that there was very little art being created with the children of that age,” Hill said. Venues for the festival will include the Assembly Hall, the studio of Le Théâtre français de Toronto and the Fraser Mustard Early Learning Academy. Another one of the venues the shows will be featured at is Leslieville’s very own Redwood Theatre. Hill added that Redwood Theatre was chosen for the list because of its theatre and art history. “We love the Redwood, we thought it was a great choice for a partnership,” Hill said. “That neighbourhood is just blooming with young families.” Ticket prices run from $12 to $15.
