‘We always carry her tucked in our hearts’ Family of Reese Fallon thanks community for support as anniversary of shooting approaches By Alan Shackleton
AS THE one-year anniversary of the Danforth Avenue shooting that took the lives of 18-year-old Reese Fallon and 10-yearold Julianna Kozis approaches, Fallon’s family wanted to publicly say a thank you to all those who have supported them during the past 12 months. Fallon, who had graduated from Malvern Collegiate in the spring of 2018 and was planning to start a nursing course at McMaster University in the fall, and Kozis, a Markham resident, were both killed on the night of Sunday, July 22, after a man started shooting at innocent bystanders along Danforth Avenue in the Greektown area. Along with taking the lives of Fallon and Kozis, the shooter also wounded 13 other people before killing himself. Reese’s parents, Doug Fallon and Claudine de Beaumont, said the past year has been an “extremely dark time” but the support of the community has been of enormous importance to them. In an interview at their Upper Beach home earlier this month, they said they wished to thank all those who have been there for them and helped them over the past year. They said there are too many individuals to name specifically, and did not want to try and mention them all for fear of leaving someone out. However, they did want to publicly thank a number of groups including the Highland Funeral Home in Scarborough; Brown’s Flower Shop on Kingston Road; Loblaws; the Malvern Collegiate community including staff and students; TD Securities (Doug’s employer); the Beaches-East York Liberal Association and MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith; Drink inc. (which organized a fundraiser on Aug. 22 in Reese’s memory); and the first responders who came out on the night of July 22 and particularly the Toronto firefighters from Station 323’s D Shift who stayed with Reese after she was shot. “We want to thank everyone. Our friends, our neighbours and the community itself,” said Claudine. “Eleven-and-a-half months later and we still see the community wrapping us up

They fed us during what was an extremely dark time. We were not even able to prepare food,” said Claudine. “At first we resisted this, but with the encour-
agement of some neighbours we came to accept it.” “We’re a very small family and our friends have become our family. They have been integral to our survival this year,” said Doug. “We have seen this huge loss, this enormous suffering,” he said. “From such an evil act, we have seen such beautiful acts of kindness.” He said the family has worked hard to be kind and supportive to each other in the wake of the tragic loss of Reese who was their middle daughter between older sister Riley, 22, and younger sister Quinn, who turned 16 this May. “The four of us have been very kind and loving with each other, and we have tried to live with compassion for others,” said Doug. Nothing, though, will ever lessen their grief. “For us, I can’t form words to do justice to the loss and the sadness we are feeling,” said Claudine. “We will never get over the loss of Reese. We always carry her tucked in our hearts. We live with deep eternal love for Reese.” Doug and Claudine said they are also grateful to Reese’s friends, many of whom were with her having ice cream in Alexander The Great Parkette after celebrating a birthday party on the night of the shooting, for helping to keep her memory alive. “This has been a significant loss for them. They were so close, they were like sisters,” said Claudine. “I’m proud of Reese’s friends. They have worked so hard to keep her legacy and spirit alive everywhere in our hearts.” They are also proud of daughter Quinn’s work with the group triggerchange.ca and a number of other Danforth shooting victims calling for a ban on handguns and assault weapons in Canada. “She is very passionate and it has become an important cause for her to help make this change,” said Doug. Claudine and Doug said Reese’s personality was also to stand up for what was right. “When Reese was here, she tried to be a leader for change Continued on Page 2

They have been a beacon of light for us and a rock for our family.” Both families are preparing to have the tragic events of last July 22 resurface as the one-year anniversary takes place, and they are trying to focus on the positive memories and moving forward with love. “We have accepted that we will never have closure on this,” said Claudine. “We’ll never have peace. We have to focus on our family and our friends. For us to have hate or anger does nothing. We need to direct our emotions elsewhere. She was very polite, even-tempered, low key. She always found a solution to problems. for issues she was passionate about,” Claudine. Some of the issues Reese championed were Pride rights, animal rights and climate change. “She thought everyone should be treated the same and have the same rights and not be discriminated against,” said Claudine. Reese’s passion for animal rights and climate change in particular led her to a close relationship with MP Erskine-Smith and to be active in the Young Liberals organization. “She loved being part of that,” said Doug. In Reese’s honour, the Young Liberals of Canada have created a fund that will help support members who
would like to travel to other parts of the country to take part in conferences, conventions and other events that they might not otherwise have been able to afford. Julia Steel, a close friend of the family, also established a scholarship in Reese’s name to be presented by Malvern Collegiate. “We are very grateful for that because it will go on forever,” said Claudine of the scholarship. She said Reese was “a very brave kid, a super compassionate kid. She always stood up for other people. She was never afraid to make her feelings about helping others known. She was strong and brave and fought for other people’s rights.” “She was also a witty, smart kid with a dry sense of

THE ATMOSPHERIC Fund (TAF), in partnership with the City of Toronto, will implement heating and cooling retrofits to four multi-residential buildings in Toronto and Hamilton. The project will tackle one rental apartment building, one condominium and two low-income social housing buildings, all representing 791 households. One of the first undertakings will commence at 66 Walpole Ave., off Greenwood Avenue north of Gerrard Street East, which is owned by Toronto Community Housing. The announcement was made on Monday, July 8, at
the residential building’s courtyard, with speakers including Toronto-Danforth MP Julie Dabrusin, TorontoDanforth Councillor Paula Fletcher and Toronto Mayor John Tory. “I am pleased that the federal government has come forward with funding towards this important project,” said Tory. “Future retrofits helped by this new investment will ensure that we are addressing climate change and reducing our carbon footprint as a city.” Buildings make up 44 percent of carbon emissions in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The TowerWise Energy Retrofit Program aims to
improve the energy performance of multi-unit residential buildings, to meet the federal government’s 2050 targets of reducing carbon emissions by 80%. “When I heard about this (announcement), I went to my files, and I found a letter from 2004 saying, ‘Can we please find a way to reduce heating costs for the tenants here at Walpole?’” said Fletcher. “We know that heating is very expensive so this is going to be a gift to this community, and to many other communities that are dependent on baseboard heating,” she said. One apartment at 66 Walpole Ave, belonging to a resident, Diane Laitley was
used as a trial for the new upgrades. Two exchange units were installed in her bedroom above the ceiling that provides heating and cooling. Those units replace the baseboard heater that was previously there. Each unit has a remote control for residents to use. While satisfied with the technical changes, Laitley said she was skeptical about the appearance of the units. “The design reminds me of a laundry room, like back in the day. I don’t like this..it could really use some kind of moulding,” she said. The complete revamping of 66 Walpole Ave is estimated to take a year before it is complete.

Balsam Avenue ‘parking spot’ raises concerns By Amanda Gibb
TWO FRESHLY-PAINTED parking spaces now line the side of a street in the Beach neighbourhood. Flanked on either side by
driveways, the neatly painted white lines appeared on Balsam Avenue over the Canada Day long weekend. The illegitimate spaces may be a result of neighbourhood disputes over parking.
“There have been problems with people taking two spots, and some nasty notes left on cars. Very nasty notes,” said Paul Andersen, a resident on Balsam Avenue. As the summer heat inten-
Invasive plant cleanup in Ashbridges Bay Park By Amanda Gibb
AN EVENT will be held at Ashbridges Bay Park on Thursday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to remove an invasive plant species called burdock from the area. This is the first stewardship event sponsored and held by the City of Toronto’s Green Toronto at Ashbridges Bay Park. Part of what Toronto’s green sector does is deal with matters of environmental protection and remediation activities, while creating jobs and local wealth. “It impacts the local ecosystem by having this invasive plant species removed to allow for native plants to take over,” said Clyde Robinson. Invasive plant species like burdock spread quickly, as the common plant can live up to four years and release 6,000 to 16,000 seeds per plant. It can cause damage to the
sifies and more people visit the Beach, the problem of too many cars and not enough parking space worsens. The closer to Lake Ontario the street is, the more tightly packed the cars that are parked on the side of the road tend to be. “People get pretty irate because in the summer it’s so hard to find parking. Nonresidents come and they take parking spots and it’s infuriating for the residents who actually pay the month-
ly fee,” said Andersen. A residential on-street permit allows residents to park their vehicle on the street within specific areas and times. “I know how important the topic of parking is to our community. Since taking office, I have been speaking with residents to better understand their needs when it comes to our permit parking system,” said Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford.
Bradford said he intends to bring forth a solution to Toronto-East York Community Council to help local residents with the parking issues. “This is my third time living in the Beaches, and parking has always been a problem,” said Andersen. For more information on City of Toronto parking permits and rules, please visit www.toronto.ca and click through to the street parking links.

AS I’M writing this article, the Anglican Church of Canada’s General Synod—the church’s highest governing and legislative body comprised of a large number of delegates from across the country—is in the midst of a seven-day meeting in Vancouver. This has been a highly anticipated gathering because noteworthy on the agenda is a motion to amend the church’s definition of marriage to reflect marriage equality. In 2005 Prime Minister Paul Martin introduced the Civil Marriage Act, which
legalized same-sex marriage throughout Canada. Since then Anglicans have been fiercely debating whether there are sufficient theological grounds to solemnize such marriages in the context of a church wedding ceremony. That protracted debate reached its zenith on the night of Friday, July 12, when General Synod voted against the motion to amend the church’s definition of marriage. For the amendment to have passed, a two-thirds majority would’ve been required of those voting in each of the orders of bishops, clergy, and laity. In 2016 this same motion passed its “first reading” by the slimmest of margins. But it has now failed its required second and final reading. It was not the clergy or laity
who killed it, for both orders achieved well in excess of two-thirds. The bishops, however, managed 62 per cent, which in actual numbers means they fell short by just two votes. I’m profoundly disappointed in this outcome, especially at a time when the institution of marriage, whether civil or religious, seems to be in decline. What is the fallout of the General Synod vote? On one level it will have devastating repercussions for LGBTQ+ people. Some will feel utter rejection, knowing that the Anglican Church of Canada is not yet convinced of their qualifications to marry. This will doubtless precipitate further alienation, especially in areas of the country where some bishops and priests are

already strongly opposed not only to marriage equality but to the very idea of samesex relationships. On another level it will have ramifications for how Anglican bishops and clergy relate to one another. Some bishops, including the Bishop of Toronto, have already moved ahead with authorizing same-sex marriages in parishes that are affirming of this. These bishops believe that, while marriage may still be defined as between a man and a woman, the definition doesn’t explicitly repudiate the notion of samesex marriage. Of course, for those bishops who hold unwaveringly and exclusively to a traditional understanding of marriage, this move by other bishops is nothing short of scandalous. Moreover, the large numbers of laity and clergy who support marriage equality, but who happen to be under the direction of a bishop who doesn’t, are now in a position of exacerbated difficulty. All that being said, it’s important to note that since 2004 the Anglican Church of Canada has officially affirmed, through a resolution of General Synod, “the integrity and sanctity of committed adult same-sex relationships.” In other words, on a national level the church accepts and does not condemn the partnerships of those who identify as LGBTQ+. But the church is not yet ready to affirm in its canons that such partnerships constitute the basis of holy matrimony. I say “not yet” because from my standpoint as a parish priest, the opposition of certain Anglican bishops to marriage equality is prolonging the unavoidable. The present failure to amend the definition of marriage doesn’t mitigate the overwhelming numbers of clergy and laity who’ve affirmed the amendment. And it won’t deter more bishops from authorizing same-sex marriages. So the Anglican Church of Canada will be moving forward as though the recently defeated amendment had passed. The genie is out of the bottle. As more same-sex weddings are officiated by Anglican priests, this practice will inevitably need to be squared with how the church defines marriage. It’s not a question of “if” but only “when” the definition of marriage will be changed. The Rev. Jeff Nowers is associate priest of St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, located on Queen St. E. at Silver Birch Ave.

Over the past 25 years, Taste of the Danforth has raised millions of dollars for numerous charities including the Michael Garron Hospital, Riverdale Share, a youth scholarship at Toronto police’s 55 Division and many more. While it started out as a Greek festival, Taste of the Danforth has grown and evolved to become a celebration of Toronto’s inclusive and multicultural community. In My Opinion
Festivals, concerts mean there’s lots to do locally this summer Alan Shackleton Beach Metro News Editor IT’S SUMMER in the Beach, and here’s hoping all of our readers are able to enjoy everything the season has to offer whether it is by camping or cottaging, a vacation trip or staying home in the neighbourhood to take in the numerous festivals, concerts and other events happening locally. Those who decide on the “staycation” option certainly have no shortage of events taking place in, around or just outside the boundaries of our community. From a hyper-local perspec-
tive, the month of July wraps up with the two final weekends of the Beaches International Jazz Festival. The 31st annual festival has been bringing music to the area for the entire month, and it wraps up with a number of events over the next two weeks. This weekend coming up sees concerts at the Main Stage and the A Capella Stage at Woodbine Park, beginning Friday night and continuing through to Sunday. Some of the performers this weeekend include Tribute to Studio One: Reggae Got Soul on Friday night, DA CRUZ on Saturday night, and After Funk on Sunday to name but a few. Next week will feature the jazz festival’s Workshop Series which allows participants to take part in Listen and Learn sessions with mu-
sicians. The workshops take place July 22, 23 and 24 at the Mennonite New Life Centre on Queen Street East. Wrapping up the festival is the always popular Streetfest which is set for Thursday, July 25 through to Saturday, July 27. Streetfest brings out more than 40 bands to perform along Queen Street East in the Beach. It also brings out tens of thousands of music fans who flock to the area to hear performers play on street corners and in front of businesses. If you are in town those days, don’t miss Streetfest as it is a hugely fun and entertaining event. The jazz festival will also feature Main Stage and Big Band Stage performances on the weekend of July 27 through to July 28. For a complete listing of jazz festival events
over the next two weeks, please go to www.beachesjazz.com Of course, the jazz festival is not the only event for local residents to find fun and excitement at this summer. There’s also some great music set for Stephenson Park in August as the Danforth Village BIA hosts its Danforth Rocks events. More info on the lineup for Danforth Rocks is in our story on page 16 of today’s Beach Metro News. Praise for Danforth bike lane pilot Streetcar situation at Neville Park Loop is ‘absolutely’ dangerous RECENTLY, THE city’s Environmental and Infrastructure Committee adopted motions put forward by our Councillor Brad Bradford and Ward 14 Councillor Paula Fletcher to bring a bike lane pilot project to Danforth Avenue from Broadview Avenue to Dawes Road. This is an exciting first step to bringing a safe and complete street vision to our community as part of the city’s “Vision Zero” campaign. It will not only make our streets safer, which is a concern we all share, but it will transform the streets so that they serve our needs as a community. Our streets hold the pulse of our city but they can also serve as a destination. We have seen how inventive redesign of streets in cities across North America has transformed neighbourhoods, been good for
business and property values, and made them more walkable. Danforth is on the brink of positive change and the street should reflect what we want and our values. Multi-modal pilots like the one proposed for Danforth have begun to transform Toronto. We have seen the “Field of Dreams” effect bike lanes are having on Richmond and Adelaide streets. More than 6,000 people now use this corridor, a 1,500 per cent increase that continues to grow. We have seen the changes on King Street prioritize transit so people can move more quickly and efficiently but also transform pedestrian life on that street. King is now quieter and more hospitable and lined with sidewalk furniture encouraging people to
visit and stay awhile. We will see the same thing happen on Danforth Avenue, and more. Let’s share our beautiful east end success story. 32 Spokes is a cycling advocacy group in Beaches-East York. We are local residents who ride bikes as well as walk, drive, and take the TTC. We ask for your support for this bike lane pilot on Danforth Avenue. Please write to Mayor John Tory and Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford and let them know that you support a Danforth bike lane pilot! Together we can make our streets safer, livelier, and built for us.
Kathleen Mackey On behalf of 32 Spokes
THE SITUATION at the Neville Park Loop for Queen Street East streetcars is absolutely dangerous. Recently, I narrowly avoided being hit head-on by a motorist that chose to dart into the oncoming traffic lane to get around the line of streetcars waiting to get into the
Neville Park Loop. I was forced to skid to a stop. This situation is persistent and no one seems to want to solve it. Will it take a serious accident before something is done? Louis Morrissette
Streetcars are too big for Beach I AM a concerned citizen living in the Beach, and I was wondering how many of your readers feel the same way I do regarding the TTC’s new streetcars travelling along Queen Street East to Neville Park Boulevard?
They are surely too large to be in service in the Beach area. Queen Street East through the Beach is too busy for these oversized vehicles. M. Mullins

On The Wild Side
Visit by goldfinches was a memorable one Ann Brokelman is an avid birder and nature photographer naturephotosbyann.blogspot.ca
HAVE YOU recently sat in your yard and just listened to all the songs being sung? Maybe it’s too hard to really remember and compare summer to summer, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever heard so many birds in my yard. Even my husband, Erle, asked if we’ve been having more birds than in other years. Today’s story begins with me sitting in my yard, enjoying the sounds of a half-dozen birds, when I heard the twittering po-ta-to-chip pota-to-chip of a dozen American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) who arrived in my yard. Their unique colour makes it impossible to miss these stunning little birds. The males are bright yellow with a black cap, tail, and
wings. The females are duller, grayer and a little smaller at 11 to 13 centimetres. I had one of these finches hit my front window. Whenever we hear a window strike, my husband or I will go outside to see if the bird has flown away, been stunned, or died. So tiny was this little finch that he was hard to find among the flowers and plants of our garden. I found that he was stunned, so I carefully picked him up, put him in a knitted nest in a box with air-holes, and brought him inside to my computer room. Two hours later I went to have a peak to see if he, hopefully, was recovering or if he, sadly, had passed away. As soon as I cracked the lid, out of box he flew and around the room he buzzed! I quickly closed the door, got a chair, and carefully picked him up off of the ceiling light, where he landed,

Goldfinches are stunning little birds that are hard to miss due to their unique colour. before putting him back in the box. Right away I took him outside, opened the box, and he took off to join his friends. A few moments later all the gold finches had taken off in the direction of the bluffs. While I’d like to hope my little friend told the other finches about my hospitality,
its just as likely that this is how tales of alien abductions spread among the bird communities. A couple of fascinating finch facts: A group of goldfinch is called a “charm” and the American goldfinch can burrow under the snow, to keep warm, when the winter weather gets to be too cold.
Information sought on Second World War pilot Aitken who grew up on Wolverleigh Boulevard A FORMER member of the Royal Air Force who lives in Wales is hoping Beach Metro News readers can help him find more information on a Canadian pilot who was killed in a mid-air collision during the Second World War. Steve Jones, from Port Talbot, Wales, has done extensive research into the graves of numerous airmen who lost their lives in the Second World War. He was able to gather some information on Alexander Aitken, who grew up on Wolverleigh Boulevard which runs just north of Danforth Avenue between Woodbine Avenue and Linsmore Crescent. Aitken is believed to have grown up in a house on the block between Linsmore and Monarch Park Avenue. Jones was briefly in Toronto last fall while on a North American motorcycle tour. At that time, he tried to visit the house where he believed Aitken had grown up to see if he could get information on other relatives. However, he was not successful at that address, but did receive assistance from a neighbour who has forwarded Jones’ request to Beach Metro News. Aitken died in January of 1943 at the age of 20 after an accident in which the plane he was in collided with another plane from his own squadron.
Margaret Aitken (nee Craig). I believe he had two brothers; Ronald and Jack. While living in the area, the family attended the United Church on Rhodes Avenue. Many thanks for anticipated help.” It is also known, that Aitken was born in 1922 and that he worked at the T. Eaton Company’s mail order department prior to joining the air force. Anyone with information on Alexander Aitken or his family is asked to contact Jones by email at steven. jones375@ntlworld.com or by mail at 4 Taicanol. Cwmafan. Port Talbot. South Wales. Information is being sought on Alexander Aitken of Wolverleigh Boulevard, an RCAF pilot who died in a mid-air collision during the Second World War. The following is a letter from Jones, seeking more info on Alexander Aitken and providing what information he does know about the family: “In a quiet corner of a remote Welsh churchyard lies the grave of a Toronto airman. In January of 1943 this young man’s life was ended in a tragic flying accident; a mid-air collision with a fellow squadron pilot. Alexander Aitken was just 20 years of age. Of Scottish heritage, Aitken resided on Wolverleigh Boulevard in East Toronto.
For many years, his white Portland headstone erroneously recorded his occupation as “Navigator Bomber”. He was actually a Spitfire pilot with 421 Squadron RCAF. Recently made aware of this error by myself, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission replaced his headstone recording his correct occupation. To further my research into Alex Aitken, I would be grateful if any of your older readers who may remember his family can get in touch with me. His parents were Alexander Drummond Aitken and

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto
Musical memories from Blues Brothers 2000 Bernie Fletcher SUMMERTIME AND the livin’ is easy for music lovers. Maybe the fish aren’t jumpin’, but the bands sure are. Whatever your musical taste you can find your groove at music festivals. Summer kicked off on June 22 with the 50th anniversary celebration of the Legendary Downchild Blues Band at the Toronto Jazz Festival. If a rollicking blues band is putting on a party, who ya gonna call? No, not a Ghostbuster, but a Blues Brother. I was walking along Bloor Street when who popped out of a building but Elwood Blues himself, Dan Aykroyd, dressed all in black with the cool hat and shades. Fellow Canuck and bandleader Paul Shaffer came over and gave Aykroyd a big hug. The two go back a long
Photo above left, Dan Aykroyd and John Goodman in a scene from Blues Brothers 2000 shot in St. John’s Norway Cemetery. Photo above right, Aretha Franklin in a scene from the same movie shot in a car dealership at Dundas Street East and the Don Valley Parkway. way to the early days of Saturday Night Live. Aykroyd came to Toronto in 1969 from Ottawa and Kingston and became a member of the Second City Comedy troupe. He’s been a movie star in Hollywood for decades, but he still comes back home on Canada Day, his birthday. His grandfather was even a Mountie! Aykroyd has said, “There
would be no Blues Brothers if it wasn’t for Downchild”. He credits siblings Donnie Walsh and the late Richard “Hock” Walsh as the inspiration for the Blues Brothers which started as a skit on SNL and led to platinum-selling albums and a hit movie in 1980. Aykroyd and John Belushi modelled their characters on the Walsh brothers. The idea came one night at
Aykroyd’s after hours club at 505 Queen St. E. Belushi was there and heard Downchild’s album playing. Aykroyd told him it was a local blues band. Music director Howard Shore called Aykroyd and Belushi the “Blues Brothers” and the name stuck. The 1980 Blues Brothers film became a cult classic. The sequel Blues Brothers 2000 (1998) was a flop, but
showcases some terrific performances from legends like Aretha Franklin and B.B. King. In one scene Aykroyd and John Goodman take on Russian mobsters at St. John’s Norway Cemetery. One highlight is Franklin singing Respect at the Mercedes dealership on Dundas Street East overlooking the Don Valley. The two Blues Brothers
films were the Queen of Soul’s only acting roles. The world lost a legend last August when Franklin died. Aykroyd paid tribute to her in a tweet: “Happy memories of being with Aretha on movie sets and industry events. The Queen had a wry, skeptical eye on the world but once you got her laughing you were in. What a voice! What a soul!” Recent movies like Aretha’s 1972 concert film, Amazing Grace, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman and Yesterday tap into our nostalgia for the great music we grew up listening to. Can you believe that Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones is turning 76 and Woodstock was 50 years ago? It was like old times last month when Aykroyd and Shaffer joined Downchild on Bloor Street for rousing renditions of Flip, Flop and Fly, Soul Man and I Got Everything I Need (Almost). Enjoy the summer music!

Bike Share program expands east Cleanup of Beach By Amanda Gibb
TORONTO BIKE Share is expanding its network into East Toronto to better serve residents and visitors. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion and environmental degradation by adding 105 stations and 1,250 bikes to the existing network. Mayor John Tory made the expansion announcement at a news conference held last Thursday, July 11, morning in Dentonia Park. Tory was joined at the announcement by BeachesEast York Councillor Brad Bradford, York Centre Councillor James Pasternak and Toronto Parking Authority Acting President Robin Oliphant.
“In the past 12 months alone, Bike Share Toronto reached a new record of 2.1 million rides, the most rides ever in a 12-month period,” said Tory. “I think this is an indication that this expansion is warranted, that the continued confidence in this program is warranted, and it reflects the success of the program.” The federal government allocated $4 million in funding through its Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF) which the City of Toronto matched to improve and expand the Bike Share Toronto infrastructure to more parts of the city. The expansion will lead to a total of 465 stations, 5,000 bikes, and 8550 docks across
Toronto. Many of these new stations will build upon the peripherals of the existing network, including expanding into the Upper Beaches. One new station has recently been constructed at 2230 Gerrard St. E., in front of Ted Reeve Arena just east of Main Street. “This will be an enhancement to not just Bike Share Toronto but also to the overall public transportation system and the public transportation option. We want to make it more attractive for people to pick,” said Tory. As in previous expansions, many of the new Bike Share stations will be near TTC subways in an effort to have residents incorporate cycling into public transporta-
tion commutes. From 2016 to 2018, more than 100 kilometres of existing bike lanes were enhanced and upgraded in Toronto. The city has added 60 kilometres of new cycling infrastructure such as bike lanes and multi-use trails, and Tory said there are plans to construct more than 120 kilometres of cycling infrastructure through the Vision Zero road safety plan. “This is all part of the plan to connect and grow and renew infrastructure for Toronto cycling roots and also to enhance safety at the same time,” he said. For detailed locations of all Bike Share Toronto Stations, please visit www.bikesharetoronto.com

Danforth Rocks set for Stephenson Park on Wednesday nights in August By Amanda Gibb
DANFORTH ROCKS Summer Music Series will be back for its third year at Stephenson Park featuring live music, food and drink, and local merchants. The family-friendly and community-based event will be held every Wednesday night in August from 6 to 9 p.m. The Friends of Stephenson Park stewardship group, run by Peter Woodcock, first started the event as a neighbourhood music show before approaching the Danforth Village Business Improvement Area so it could become a larger music festival. The Danforth Village BIA
is an association of businesspeople in the district who come together to focus on stimulating local businesses. “I think it’s really about bringing together community and it’s really featuring what we have locally. We try to have as many of the local businesses come out as possible,” said Natalie Kauffman, the administrative coordinator. The bands featured are mostly Toronto talents such as Tim Bovaconti and the Enablers, who will open the series up on Aug. 7. The featured breweries and food are all local. Other attractions include face painting and henna, as well as booths from local
businesses such as Fix It Females and Looking Glass Adventures, an escape room venue. “It’s really about that vibe of coming out to the park and it’s summer. In Toronto, we have such a short time to enjoy being outdoors, and what a great way to do it: with music, with food, with beer,” said Kauffman. In previous years, Danforth Rocks has drawn crowds of 400 to 500 people but that number is expected to grow. “People (who come) often know each other, run into neighbours, or bring out new people who want to check out the east end,” said Kauffman.
The schedule for this summer’s Danforth Rocks at Stephenson Park, 61 Stephenson Ave., southwest of Main Street and Danforth Avenue, is as follows: Wednesday, Aug, 7 – Tim Bovaconti and the Enablers with featured brewery Great Lakes Brewery; Wednesday, Aug. 14 – Lowfills with featured brewery Danforth Brewery; Wednesday, Aug. 21 – Little Magic Same with featured brewery Left Field Brewery; Wednesday, Aug. 28 – The Stephen Stanley Band with featured brewery Eastbound Brewing Co. High water, storms are nothing new
M
any Beachers think that they are having problems with the wind, the water, the storms, the sand, uprooted trees, climate change and issues all around the eastern Beach. Let me give you a little lesson in the climate area in the Beach – history is the teacher! The present Boardwalk as we know it nowadays was originally a long, gigantic sandbar stretching from the Scarborough Bluffs to our present Toronto islands. To the north of this ‘sandbar’ was a body of water (Toronto Bay) on the west side near Bathurst Street until about the present Parliament Street in the east. From that point there was a body of water south of Eastern Avenue and Queen Street going eastward from Parliament to our present day Maclean Avenue. It was called Ashbridges Bay, a giant water swamp. Later, people started moving in like the Ashbridges family, and the Williams, and they started building the
Gene Domagala
area up. Cottages appeared on this sandbar in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The people were at the mercy of the weather on this sandbar, and there was no protection from the elements. Over the next 50 years, Ashbridges Bay was filled in with 60-foot logs to stabilize the bottom, water was taken out and construction material and landfill garbage was put into it until it was nearly able to be built upon for residential and commercial properties. But, there were hundreds of cottages built over the sandbar where the present Boardwalk is from Victoria Park Avenue to the Toronto islands, and these cottages were at the mercy of the elements. These homes were sometimes very flimsy, while in other cases they were
solid brick houses. But they were all without any protection from rain, sleet, hurricanes, current changes, tides, undertows etc… These houses had water lots extending out into Lake Ontario, but no protection against the ravages of the water. When a storm came down, dozens of these homes and their boat houses were often taken out into the lake. At their own peril, Beachers tried to bring their cottages back. There are articles written about the water levels going up hundreds of feet on streets such as Lee Avenue, Kenilworth Avenue, Waverly Road and Maclean Avenue – wreaking havoc upon anything in the way. When storms hit the main streets of Queen and Maclean, there were reports of up to four-to-five-foot deep pools of water for several hundred feet. This was a disaster for the residents. In those days, Kenilworth and Kippendavie were flooded for days. The water was up to four or five feet deep. When a rainstorm came, streets near the present Norway and Lee area were flooded up to seven feet deep, causing devastation. Lightning would hit churches, such as the old Bellefair United, damaging the steeple. The Kew Gardens area was also flooded. Storms in those days were horrific. Granted, there were a great number of years where the unrelenting winds and rain abated, but when they came back disaster struck. For example, near Fallingbrook Road and Queen one year the storms wiped out the cliffs at the bottom of the road and sent the land into the lake. There are hundreds of photos over the years of ruination in the Beach area, with people trying to save their property and belongings in those days from the 1880s to the 1920s. Finally, common sense prevailed and the government took over. They destroyed most of the cottages and stabilized the waterfront in the 1930s. It is very hard for me to write about the misery brought about by these storms, having read and researched hundreds of articles on this subject. To see pictures of homes floating in the lake, people looking for their belongings, boats and debris piled on the sand. What a tragic sight. Since those days, different government agencies have installed groynes (concrete triangles to help stop waves); and filled in the lake several hundred feet south to stop any natural intrusion. However, many will recall there were still storms that wreaked havoc on the area in later years. In 1953, the Kew Beach Boat House and the Leuty Lifeguard Station were the victims of one of these violent storms. The boat house was hoisted above the Boardwalk where it remains today, and the lifeguard station was moved out of danger (we believe). However, the storms that once took place were much worse in their impact than today because of modern technology. Let us hope tragedy will not strike again. To write a full account of the different storms, hurricanes etc… would take dozens of pages, which I might one day do. Please share any comments with me.

Robbie soccer champs crowned Members of the Glen Shields Futbal Club’s Under-15 girls team accept the Robbie International Soccer Tournament Championship Trophy on July 2 at Birchmount Stadium. Glen Shields beat Dixie Athletics 3-1 to win the title. Championship trophies were handed out in boys and girls divisions ranging from Under-13 to Under-17/18 on July 2 as the 53rd annual Robbie tournament wrapped up.
Beach cyclist Bird wins gold medal at Grand Fondo road race in Italy BRUCE BIRD picked up several medals in the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Gran Fondo World Championships in cycling in Varese, Italy last month, and he had his own Canadian cheering section to support him. A Beach resident, Bird took up cycling a decade ago and has risen in the rankings ever since. Defending his title as world champion in the men’s 50-54 age category over the Labour Day weekend, Bird won a gold medal in the time trials, a silver medal for the four-person relay team representing Canada, and another gold
medal in the final UCI Gran Fondo road race in June. Bird was the only Canadian to place in the individual events. For his time trial, he ranked 13th among the fastest racers of the day across all age groups of the 563 riders who finished the race, winning the gold medal in his age group. Twenty-five teams were entered in the relay, 18 competed, and two were disqualified, said Bird’s friend and neighbour, Deborah Wilson. Wilson ventured to Italy along with several of Bird’s friends and family
members to watch him race. “There were 18 of us who travelled to Varese, Italy, to cheer on Bruce,” she said. “Bruce is incredibly dedicated to his sport and has had his share of bumps and bruises along the way. It was very gratifying to see his hard work pay off and see Canada represented among some of the most accomplished cycling countries in the world.” “I do it because I love it!” said Bird. He plans on participating in the same events in Poznan, Poland in 2019 and in Vancouver-Whistler B.C. in 2020.

Children’s French Book Corner (a French bookstore) is looking for another person to share their current space on Main Street, south of Gerrard as prior co-tenant left at the end of June. The bookstore would love to continue operating within this space but need to share in order to be able to afford the overall rent. The area available is toward the back and is about 500 sqft. It includes an open area, a meeting room of about 200 sqft, and an office, all nicely finished. As a bonus, will also have access to another 400 sq ft in the basement. My Perfect Day in the East End
Withrow Park, some restaurants and some watering holes By Mara Cole
MY PERFECT day in the East End? I have many! That’s why I have lived here for 30 years or so. I can tell you about one version of my perfect day, but for every park I mention, for every coffee house, for every shop or restaurant, there are many more who make my other days here perfect. Parks and Recreation Withrow Park is definitely one of my happy places. It sits smack dab in the middle of my hood and it is part of everywhere I walk or drive – it is simply part of my daily existence. With a soccer pitch, baseball
diamond, tennis courts, skating rink and huge off-leash area, it is always full of life and busy with everything from organized sports to families playing to people simply lying on the hill. During the summer, it hosts the Withrow Farmers Market. How blessed am I to be so close! And my dog Jasper loves his buddies in the dog park! Java Joint On the way to Withrow Park we will stop into the Riverdale Perk (633 Logan Ave.) right at the corner of my street, where excellent coffee, baked goods, amazing brunches and lunches and more reside! This is one heck of a hidden gem,
and those of us who live here really value having it smack dab in the middle of our residential streets. Lunch Spot After the puppy is asleep in his crate, off I go to Maha’s (226 Greenwood Ave.) What amazing and unique food (Mind Blowing Chicken and Honey Cardamom latte are favourites!) The Egyptian family that own it are lovely people, too. Specialty Stores After Maha’s I might head to Moss (544 Danforth Ave.) to pick up a special gift or just browse. I love it because you can find unique things for the house and garden, and I
never fail to find the perfect gift. Then it’s off to Broadview Flower Market (737 Broadview Ave.) to treat myself to a bouquet. This is the most beautiful flower shop in Toronto and at such reasonable prices. Dining Out Home now, I turn my planning to dinner…where to go? If it’s a Tuesday, I have a really good plan. First, up to the Auld Spot (347 Danforth Ave.) for buck-a-shuck oysters then we would head to Descendant Pizza (1168 Queen St. E.), as we do religiously once a week, for the best darned Detroit Style Pizza in the city. Its owner, Chris, is a total genius when it comes to designing
insanely creative pizzas. I am sure they have no calories…… Watering hole If I still have energy, on the way home we would stop at Pinkerton’s (1026 Gerrard St. E.) for a night cap – that place has a bartender with mad skills! I could create many “perfect day in the east end” scenarios, and that is what makes my life here so utterly blessed. I am so grateful to live in a place which evokes such passion from me! Do you have a Perfect Day in the East End? Please contact fiona@ beachmetro.com and let her know all about it.
