Bells on Danforth set for Saturday CYCLISTS FROM across Toronto are expected to converge on Danforth Avenue this Saturday, June 15, for the eighth annual Bells on Danforth event. The family friendly bike ride begins at 11 a.m. at the north end of Withrow Park, on Logan Avenue south of Danforth Avenue, and will travel for eight kilometres along the Danforth. Organized by a number of local cycling groups, the event aims to raise awareness of the need for safe cycling options on the Danforth. “According to bicycle counts over 3,000 cyclists are riding along Dan-
forth, for transportation, recreation and shopping,” said Bells on Danforth organizer Mary Ann Neary in a press release. “As the city grows, we feel it is more important than ever that the Danforth be recognized as an integral part of Toronto’s cycling network. We have seen from the success of Bloor, Richmond and Adelaide that more and more people are using protected bike lanes as routes to get around Toronto by bike.” The route for this year’s ride will see cyclists travel east along Danforth Avenue from Withrow Park all the way to Danforth Road in
Scarborough, and then back to the Oakridge Community Centre on Pharmacy Avenue. At the community centre, participants can join in a fun fair and/or take part in a Scarborough Safe Streets event. “We are so pleased to serve as the endpoint for this wonderful ride and this year we’re thrilled to be able to highlight so many groups working to make our streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers,” said Louise Gilmour, a member of Toronto East Cyclists in a press release. TORONTO AND East York Community Council is expected to make a decision later this month on a heritage designation being sought for a home at 28 Bracken Ave. in the Beach. The call to have the home designated as such was approved by the Toronto Preservation Board at its meeting on May 29. The two-and-a-half-storey home, built in 1915-16, has been deemed to meet the criteria needed for a heritage designation according to a May 22 report presented by the City of Toronto’s Heritage Preservation Services, City Planning, Urban Design department. That report stated the house “has a design value as an exceptionally finely-crafted example of Arts and Crafts architecture rendered in the Shingle Style which is evident in its complex massing of roofs and dormers integrating a Continued on Page 2
Car fire in driveway of Beach home considered ‘suspicious’ A FIRE which severely damaged a Porsche parked in a Beach driveway early Friday morning is considered suspicious. Toronto Fire was called to a home at the northeast corner of Glen Ames and Long Crescent at approximately 12:41 a.m. on June 7 for reports of a fire. When fire crews arrived they found a Porsche Panamera sedan in the driveway fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and then checked the house
to make sure the fire had not spread. No one was injured in the fire. However, fire crews at the scene deemed it suspicious and handed it over to Toronto Fire investigators and Toronto police to look into. That investigation has not yet revealed a cause for the car fire. Toronto Fire would not speculate on whether the fire was connected to two other incidents early Friday morning in Scarborough in which vehicles were burned under suspicious circumstances.

WE ALL navigate uncertainties in our everyday lives. Most of us would take this idea metaphorically, but not those who live with a visual impairment. Alison Brown used to live in fear of bumping into people, falling over things, and hurting herself every single day that she went out. Her life outdoors caused constant anxiety and frustration until she met Ellis, a female service dog that made her life easier. Thanks to Ellis, Alison can navigate around things that might cause her injury, from a minor collision to a serious accident. Whether the sidewalks are crowded with people or full of garbage bins, Ellis always helps Alison safely avoid obstacles. “It is almost like someone saying ‘let’s go this way and this way,’” said Alison. Life also became more fun. When Alison used a cane, she never felt safe to go to a movie theatre or an art gallery. She would hesitate because of the crowds and the dark. “I don’t see anything at all in the dark and I would certainly avoid going out after dark,” she said. Her life changed six months ago when she and Ellis graduated from the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guide Centre, in Oakville. Ellis was trained through the Canine Vision program, one of the seven programs to prepare dogs to work with specific medical conditions or physical disabilities. Alison is grateful to take
part in the program that provides the dog, training and follow up at no cost. “The average cost of a Dog Guide is around $25,000.” Alison is also excited about the Toronto Beaches Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides taking place June 23 at Woodbine Beach. The event is a national fundraising walk held in approximately 300 communities across Canada. Each walk is organized by local volunteers with support from Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides and Pet Valu stores. “I know the Beaches community will pull together to make our own local event a success.” Living in the area for about 10 years, Alison praised the great opportunity for people in the community to get to know the important roles played by dog guides. “Most people know how dogs can make loving, loyal companions as pets, but many don’t know how a Dog Guide can really improve a person’s life in terms of safety, mobility, increased independence, and confidence.” Alison believes that it’s difficult for many people to truly understand what it’s like to experience such things as hearing or vision loss or to imagine the stress that comes along with an unpredictable drop in blood sugar or having a seizure. “For me, having Ellis it’s like having a hand to hold and reassurance that everything will be OK.” Registrations for the event begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. The funds

Many careers that were once considered secure are now precarious. Today’s journalists, tellers and teachers know that more than most. The concept of a job for life is passé. And while only low-skill jobs were perceived to be precarious, even highly educated professionals are experiencing economic insecurity and unstable working conditions. It takes an average of sixteen weeks to find employment in Canada. At the same time, the average Canadian is only two paycheques from bankruptcy.
The combination means, more than just jobs, housing is also precarious even for homeowners. In Toronto, the average home is over $824,000. The cost of owning a home takes up 79 percent of the median household income. Loss of employment is only one uncontrollable factor contributing to homelessness. Other causes include separation and divorce, workplace injury and chronic illness. And then there’s the working poor. Over 8 percent of the working population in Toronto are working poor, a number that grew by almost 40 percent between 2000 and 2005. Ending up homeless is easier than you think. Yet few think it could
happen to them. When it does, finding a way out of homelessness is difficult but it’s not impossible thanks to organizations like Haven Toronto. For 86 years, Haven Toronto has been a valuable resource for people impacted by poverty and homelessness. The drop-in centre, which relies on donations to help meet service demands, has staff dedicated to finding housing and negotiating with landlords to keep people housed. The only facility of its kind in Canada focused on the unique needs of men 50+, Haven Toronto sees 250 to 400 clients a day; 98 percent of whom will never work again – all are homeless or precariously housed.

Community council to vote on call for heritage designation Continued from Page 1 deep veranda, the combination of a brick-clad lower storey with shingled upper stories and finely crafted wood elements.” Located on the corner of Bracken and Bingham avenues, the home was first owned by Clara and Alfred G. Hill. Its prominent location on a corner lot is another reason why Heritage Preservation Services has recommended that the home be given a heritage designation. “Prominently sited on its corner lot and viewed from two streets, the house, with its complex massing of roofs, dormers and deep veranda and its finely crafted details including the complementary garage is a local architectural landmark,” the report stated. The process to have a heritage designation for the house began earlier this year after its present owners, who purchased the home in 2016, submitted a request to demolish it and replace it with a new three-storey house and new detached garage. A heritage designation would mean the city has the
power to review alterations to the site, enforce heritage property standards and maintenance, and refuse demolition. Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford said that in situations such as these, the city must balance the need to protect heritage properties with the rights of property owners. In light of the approval by the Toronto Preservation Board and the report from Heritage Preservation Services, he said he will be voting in favour of the heritage designation at the Toronto and East York Community Council meeting on June 25 at 9:30 a.m. in Committee Room 1 at Toronto City Hall. “I don’t think this is intended to be restrictive towards new development, but a chance to preserve what is a special property and work with the owners to do that,” Bradford told Beach Metro News. The final decision on the heritage designation or the home at 28 Bracken Ave. is expected to be dealt with at the full Toronto Council meeting which takes place on July 16 and 17.

said that when the suggestion to have a ceremony to raise the Rainbow and Trans Pride flags was first made earlier this school year, the school was immediately supportive of the idea which promotes a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. “We have always recognized Pride Month, but this was a way for us to declare publicly our support for the LGBQT+ community,” he

Ted Randall, the longtime owner of Randall’s Stationery on Kingston Road and a Beach icon, died at the age of 88 at the end of May.
TED RANDALL, the longtime owner of Randall’s Stationery on Kingston Road, is being remembered as the heart of the Beach community. Randall died peacefully at the age of 88 on May 27 at the Taunton Village retirement home in Oshawa with family by his side. Born in September of 1931, he was known by everyone in the Beach and was the second generation of his family to own the store at 964 Kingston Rd. “He was always in the shop and everybody would come and talk to him to get the latest news,” remembered his nephew Doug Newton. Newton, along with his sister Karen and Ted’s son Jeff all worked at the store while growing up. Doug and Karen later went on to run the store after Ted retired.

“We pretty much all grew up there as kids,” Newton remembered. “We’d be helping count inventory at age 8 or 9 and then worked there as teenagers as well, as did many of our friends in the neighbourhood. The store was our second home.” Newton said Randall’s genuine interest and concern for people was what made him such a special and beloved member of the community. “He was a very warm man. He would always be talking to people, asking how they were. He had a special way with people,” Newton said. “The dynamic was just so great in there.” Being the go-to store in the community for school supplies, greeting cards, wedding invitations and more also meant that Randall knew what was going on in the life of the community, and that he played a part in the special memories of many residents. Former Beach Metro News general manager Sheila Blinoff said she remembered buying her wedding invitations in 1966 at Randall’s Stationery. Newton pointed out that being involved and helping people was part of Randall’s personality, and once he moved into the retirement home in Oshawa he soon ended up running a general store in the facility. “He ended up running the general store there. I don’t think you could say he was ever retired.” Randall was also a member of the Toronto Beaches Lions Club and for more than 40 years was one of the main organizers of the Easter parades. He was honoured with a Lions Club Lifetime Membership for his decades of community work. Randall was also named the 2003 Beach Citizen of the Year. The October 2003 story in Beach Metro News announcing that Randall had won the honour pointed out that he was “an icon in the Beach for his selfless devotion to a number of local organizations.” Newton said that wherever Randall travelled, he would come across people he knew either from the store or his involvement with the community. Randall is pre-deceased by his wife Barbara. He was the father of Jeff (Beverly) and proud step-grandfather of Jenn and step-great grandfather to Hudson. He was brother to Robert, Paul, Gord, Carol and the late Eleanor. His funeral was on May 31 in Oshawa, and Newton said many old friends from the Beach were among those who attended.

Local D-Day veteran Bacon honoured someone to make the most of the present rather than dwelling on the future.

IT’S NOT every day that one has the opportunity to meet with history in person. Yet that’s what literally happened on Friday, May 31 at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, Canada’s largest veterans’ care facility and home of one of Canada’s last living war heroes. There, surrounded by family, friends, and dedicated health professionals, 99-year-old William Allan Bacon, known to all as Bubba, personified a remarkable chapter of Canada’s war history and is a living reminder that Thursday, June 6, is the 75th anniversary of D-Day. At the May 31 event, Bacon’s bravery and patriotism were recognized once again as he was honored with The Member of Parliament’s Citizenship Award presented by Robert Oliphant, MP for Don Valley West. Weakened by his lifelong journey, Bubba barely spoke at the event, but his meaningful war story speaks for itself. Bubba was among the thousands of young Canadians who landed on Juno Beach in Normandy on DDay, 75 years ago. He grew up in Toronto’s east end and attended high school at Dan-

Allan Bacon grew up in East Toronto and attended Danforth Tech. He took part in the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. forth Tech. Like others, he was looking for adventure when he enlisted in the military, but shortly thereafter he was putting his life on the line to write Canada’s name in the memorable victory of the Allies over Nazism. His service was halted on June 17 when a grenade he was disarming went off. He lost his right arm but survived to tell his story. “Those who came back with injuries have taught us what health is, what recovery is, what dignity is, and what service is,” Oliphant said at the presentation of the Citizenship Award. Joined by Dr. Jocelyn Charles, the Medical Director of the Veterans Centre at Sunnybrook, the Oliph-
ant also recognized Bubba’s work for The War Amps, an organization which he praised for managing to have “reinvented itself as it continues to help veterans, and other people as well.” As a member of The War Amps, which was started by amputee veterans returning from the First World War, Bubba and others continued providing exemplary service to Canada by helping victims of amputation to move on and to adapt to the new reality as he did. Asked if he would like to offer a message for young generations, Bubba, with the help of his grandson Ryan Melnik, said “live life carpe diem”, citing a Latin expression used to encourage

Robbie soccer tournament proud to be part of the community Mike Ellis Robbie International Soccer Tournament, Chair WHAT DOES a soccer tournament have to do with a sense of community? A lot. The Robbie International Soccer Tournament has been a fixture on the local scene since 1967. It was established to promote soccer, and to donate proceeds to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder, ultimately fatal, that makes breathing and digestion extremely difficult. From $47.52 in that first year, donations are now almost $2-million. “Sense of community is a feeling
that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through their commitment to be together (McMillan, 1976). The Robbie ticks a lot of “sense of community” boxes. Membership: a sense of belonging. The volunteer organizers and participants share a passion for soccer. Their participation makes a difference in the soccer community and in the community committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Influence: a sense of mattering. Referees, organizers and field convenors have always volunteered. Why? To give back to community and to grow soccer.
Integration and Fulfillment of Needs: Robbie volunteers know that unpaid participation makes for larger donations for CF Canada’s support for research education and treatment. Median lifespan has increased from single digits to mid50s since the Robbie began. Shared Emotional Connection: a story and shared experiences forming a long-lasting connection. In this, The Robbie’s history is full. “I played in The Robbie.” We hear it all the time. On a cruise ship a passenger saw the Robbie logo on the sunglasses of a youngster and said, “I played in The Robbie”. A van caravan of a team from Tennessee crossed at the Peace Bridge so players could see Niagara Falls. When the CBSA

This years’ tournament runs Canada Day weekend. Local fields in use on June 29 and 30 include the Cherry Beach Soccer Fields and Monarch Park Stadium. On Monday, July 1, Birchmount Stadium will host championship games. Birchmount Stadium is a strong part of The Robbie’s connection to the community. For years a sign “Birchmount Stadium, Home of The Robbie” hung over the entrance. A member of the Barenaked Ladies played in The Robbie and knew the
sign. The phrase is the last line of their song One Week. When asked their favourite iconic Canadian reference in their music, they tweeted back a photo of the old sign. A few years back the original sign was lost during renovations. Now there’s a new sign, and I ininvite the community to join us on June 17 at 11 a.m. when a member of Barenaked Ladies will help us unveil it at Birchmount Stadium. New board named for Beach Metro Community News BEACH METRO Community News named its new board at the Annual General Meeting held on June 5. The board members are Desmond Brown, president; Bill Burrows, vice president; Debbie Visconti, past president; Doug Black, treasurer; Mary Beth Denomy, secretary; Paul Babich, special advisor; and Sheila Blinoff, special advisor. Incoming president Brown told the meeting he was optimistic about the future of Beach Metro Community News in what are still extremely challenging times
for community newspapers. “Although we’ve turned things around, we can’t be complacent,” he said. “This newspaper is a gem and means a lot to our residents. We have to continue to be creative in our approach to covering the news in our neighbourhoods and be fiscally wise. We also need our community’s support to ensure long-term survival.” To that point, Beach Metro Community News will be providing readers with information on an upcoming community sponsorship drive in our editon of June 25.

Bruce Brackett marks 80th birthday by graduating from Ryerson clown course Trisha Sales
BRUCE BRACKETT recently graduated from the Caring Clown program at Ryerson University at 80 years of age along with eight women who were also in the program. This is a huge milestone for Brackett since he stopped attending school at a young age. He left Leslieville school in Grade 10 to provide for himself and his family. Brackett went through some rough patches in life. His father was a veteran and fell ill. Throughout his life, Brackett took on different jobs ranging from driving trucks to to running the Leslieville News. He has been a lifetime resident of Leslieville, and ran the paper in the neighbourhood with a circulation of 10,000 copies. He said the paper was always given a positive response from Leslieville residents. After the paper shut down, Brackett remained deeply involved in the community. While thinking about what he wanted to do as he approached 80, he decided to take the Caring Clown course.
He said at one time he thought he would never go back to school, but he found the course to be both challenging and fun. “I thought I wasn’t going to pass at first since there’s a little difference with teaching men and teaching women,” he said of the Car-
ing Clown program. “But I struggled through and I can actually say that I learned from the teacher.” He said he wants to use his clowing skills to help those living in long term care. Brackett said his favourite moments are when he makes the seniors laugh.
“You’re dealing with people with dementia or Alzheimer’s. You really need to respect them in their space,” Brackett said. It takes a lot of energy and discipline to be a good clown, he said. “You’re doing something you probably would’ve done when you were young. I mean there’s a clown in everybody. Everybody will say something that’s funny or will do something funny all their lives from the beginning. But it’s in us. We just have to bring out that clown again,” Brackett said.

O
n the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings which took place on June 6 last week, many Canadians might have been wondering what it was all about. According to an Ispos poll conducted earlier this year, only 48 per cent of respondents could correctly answer three of six questions in a simple quiz about what is, arguably, the most famous date of the Second World War: June 6, 1944. A total of 14,000 Canadians took part in the greatest invasion in history, landing at Juno Beach on the Normandy coast, in a three-nation effort that led to the final defeat of the German army in May 1945. In an exercise I led with a group of Grade 10 students a few years ago, most of them did not notice the significant date when it appeared in the documents we were studying, though they had recently been told about D-Day in class. (Some even said they couldn’t read the cursive writing in the documents.) My own three sons, who are regularly treated to stories from Dad about war history, sometimes had a hard time telling the two world wars apart, although they all knew about D-Day. It’s not surprising: This is the way knowledge of our past recedes in memory as new generations replace older ones and personal connections to events are lost. My father told me about seeing the armada of planes heading overhead that night while he was serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Yorkshire, England. And who can forget the 1962 blockbuster movie The Longest Day with its all-star cast acting out the events of the invasion based on a best-selling book. Ah, but then I am dating myself… In 1944, all of Canada and the rest of the world knew that an invasion to drive the German army out of occupied Europe was imminent. The Russians, who had been carrying the main effort against the Germans since 1941, had been calling for a “second front” for two years. So, when Toronto woke up to read the news of the landings on June 6, it was confirmation that the war was nearing its end after five years, longer than the First World War had lasted. Many men from the Beach took part in the D-Day landings or supported it from the air and on the sea.
I began my research into the men of Malvern Collegiate many years ago as the annual French class trip was planning to visit Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery, located just inland from Juno Beach, the Canadian landing site that day. That is how I learned about two men, Sgt. Morris Murray, RCAF, and Corporal Cameron Leaner Jones, of the 7th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment, 17th Duke of York’s Royal Canadian Hussars. Murray was the navigator in a Halifax bomber sent to destroy artillery emplacements on the invasion beach near Mont Fleury. He lived at 90 Kingswood Rd., graduated from Malvern in 1933 and worked at the Inglis plant as an accountant. Although he had already volunteered for the air force in the

He was a new recruit posted to Holme-on-Spalding-Moor airfield when, on the night of June 5, he and his crew from 76 Squadron, RAF, took off from their base in Yorkshire, and crossed the channel as part of a massive air assault that began just before midnight and lasted until 5:15 a.m. A total of 1,136 sorties dropped 5,268 tonnes of bombs up and down the coast of Normandy in order to make it safer for the invasion fleet to land at sunrise. With next to no resistance from the German Luftwaffe (air force), only two aircraft were lost that night – Murray’s was one of them. Halifax “MP-W” was hit by flak and crashed inland be-

tween the villages Grey-sur-Mer and Vers-sur-Mer. He and his crewmates were quickly buried in an orchard by local citizens – a brave act as it was forbidden under occupation law. Being Canadian, Murray was eventually reburied at Beny-sur-Mer while his English crew mates were reburied in a British cemetery. As Murray and his crew were flying overhead, Jones was onboard ship in the English Channel, approaching the Normandy coast. He was one of three Jones brothers serving in the forces. His older brother Richard was in the RCAF and their younger brother Ross was with the army. Brothers Allan and David and their sister Merle were still at home at 164 Lawlor Ave. Cameron attended St. John’s school and matriculated from Malvern collegiate in 1940. He was a member of the Argonaut Rowing Club and St. John’s Roman Catholic parish and had a job as an order clerk at Robertson Brothers Chocolate Factory on Queen Street East. His father, also named Leander, fought in the First World War. Jones arrived in England in 1943 to begin special training in a Combined Operations radio network, an innovation designed to improve communication among units of the invasion force. As the driver in a Contact Detachment, comprised of one officer, a corporal (Jones) and two radio operators in a jeep, their task was to keep track of battalion movements and relay that information to commanders directing the breakout from the invasion beaches. Jones had learned how to operate radios on his own initiative back in Toronto and earned compliments on his service file as being of “superior intelligence and learning ability”. His recruiting officers noted he was “very alert and stable, well built and of neat appearance, good at math and with a mechanical aptitude”. Within the year, Jones was assigned to the 7th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment slated to take part in the landings on June 5, the original date for the invasion. After a weather delay, General Dwight Eisenhower famously gave the go-ahead for June 6 and Jones was among the second wave to reach the beaches later that day. As the Allied armies fought their way inland in what became known as the difficult Battle of Normandy, Jones was killed on July 9 not far from the airfield at Carpiquet, which had been captured in a fierce battle just four days earlier. Like Murray, he was buried nearby until the special unit tasked with finding fallen soldiers and concentrating their graves in larger, permanent cemeteries exhumed his body in 1946 and brought it to Beny-sur-Mer. He is buried just nine rows away from Murray. Also buried in Beny-sur-Mer is Corporal Howard P. Kidd, (Malvern Class of 1922) a corporal in the Highland Light Infantry, which was among the units to go ashore on June 6. He survived the landings only to be killed in action on July 8, 1944. He too was re-moved from his original grave in 1946 to join his fellow Malvern alumni at rest in the country they helped liberate. Although the number of men described in this story is small, there are many more local men who took part in what was the greatest invasion in human history. Ontario strawberry season set to begin MY RULE is summer may officially begin once the first Ontario berries are ready for picking. Of course, this date varies a little from year to year with changing weather conditions. This year with the cool, rainy days strawberries are about a week later, from mid-June to July 1, just in time for Canada Day. Luscious, sweet, juicy and aromatic, they are amazing ambassadors to the summer table. What a great way to celebrate Canada’s birthday with our own delectable strawberries!
Old Fashioned Strawberry Shortcake
On a strawberry picking adventure, a fellow picker proclaimed, “The only thing we have for dinner on the first day of strawberry picking is a great big strawberry shortcake.” That sounded like strawberry heaven! If you decide to follow this example, here is an excellent recipe for old-fashioned shortcakes, often called scones. If you prefer, you can use a sponge cake layered with sweetened strawberries and generous dollops of whipped cream.

These should be made and served warm or within hours of baking for the ultimate yummy effect! 2 cups (550 mL) all-purpose flour 3 tbsp (45 mL) granulated sugar 2 tsp (10 mL) baking powder 1/2 tsp (2 mL) baking soda 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/2 cup (125 mL) cold butter, cubed

To serve: Slice in half with sharp knife and top the bottom layer with a spoonful of sweetened berries and a dollop of the whipped (Chantilly) cream. Serve with a spoon and fork for easy enjoyment!
Sweetened Strawberries 1/2 cup (125 mL) each, milk and plain yogurt
Glaze 1 egg, beaten Granulated sugar Pre-heat oven to 425 F (225 C). Line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix milk and yogurt together; make a well in the centre of the flour mixture and pour in milk mixture. Using a fork, starting from the centre and working outwards, stir milk-yogurt mixture into flour mixture just until flour mixture is moistened to form a soft, slightly moist dough. Turn dough onto lightly floured piece of waxed paper and knead gently with floured hands about 10 times. Pat out into ½ inch (2 cm) round and using a 2 ½ inch cookie cutter, cut into rounds. Gather up any scraps and pat into another round to use up the dough. Should make about eight biscuits. Using pastry brush, brush the top of each biscuit with beaten egg; sprinkle with sugar and bake in pre-heated oven 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on rack.
4 cups (1 L) fresh berries, sliced 1/4 cup (50 mL) granulated sugar Remove hulls from strawberries and wash in a deep bowl of cool water. Drain and place on towel. Repeat process until berries are clean. Gently pat dry. Slice then combine in bowl with sugar, stirring gently to coat. Allow berries to sit at least ½ hour to allow juices to flow. This may be done at least an hour before serving, or refrigerate and use within a day or two. For longer storage freeze. To freeze whole berries: Wash and pat dry; arrange on parchment-lined baking sheets and place in freezer. Once frozen (4 hours), place 4 cups (1 L) berries in freezer bags and freeze for up to 1 year.
Whipped Cream
Once sweetened and flavoured, whipped cream is referred to as Chantilly cream. 1 cup (250 mL) whipping cream 2-4 tbsp (25 mL) granulated sugar 1 tsp (5 mL) pure vanilla In a deep bowl, using an electric mixer, beat cream until soft peaks form. Gradually beat in sugar and vanilla. Cover and refrigerate. May be prepared 1-2 hours before serving.

Annuals worth a place in the garden Mary Fran McQuade Mary Fran McQuade is a local writer specializing in gardening and lifestyle
ONCE UPON a time, gardens were filled with bright flowering plants that bloomed their pretty heads off all summer long. Impatiens, tiny fibrous begonias, marigolds, geraniums, snapdragons and more covered garden beds, public and private. Then people caught on to the idea of perennials, and annuals were left behind in the compost pile. But commercial growers are now introducing new varieties of those pretty flowering annuals, and I think they’re worth a place in your garden. Here’s why: • Annuals bloom all season long. Perennials tend to have a few weeks of bloom, then they’re done for the
year. In a small city garden, it’s hard to have flowers all summer long if you stick to perennials. • They’re relatively cheap. One ‘Calliope’ geranium (from Loblaw garden centres) can fill a two-foot/60 cm space for $4. Plant a similar grouping of heucheras, at $12 a plant, and you’re talking a lot more money. • They’re perfect for containers. Little calibrochoas (like mini petunias) spill happily over the edges and you can tuck a tall blue salvia in the middle and stick in some fluffy greenery or other shorties like sweet alyssum. If you want to be daring, use parsley or other herbs and combine use and beauty. • Best of all – breeders are bringing us a whole bouquet of easy-care annuals.You don’t have to run out and trim them back periodically to keep them from looking tacky. You no longer have to pick off faded flowers to
keep them blooming – many are now “self-cleaning.” And with the environment in mind, you now have dozens of heat- and drought-tolerant varieties to choose from. Garden merchandisers Proven Winners launch several new eye-grabbing annuals every spring. I previewed several of these last summer and can highly recommend the following ones. They should be available in independent garden centres this year. 1.) Superbells Doublette Love Swept (Calibrochoa). Charming, smallish double blooms in pink with lacy white edges are constant delight. Mounding, heattolerant, no deadheading, no diseases (none that I noticed) – what more could you ask for? 2.) Angelface Steel Blue (Angelonia angustofolia). A tall plant with long stems

Local band The Beaches to open for The Rolling Stones on June 29 LOCAL BAND The Beaches will be part of an all-Canadian lineup opening for The Rolling Stones at their Saturday, June 29 concert at the Burl’s Creek Event Ground. The concert is the only Canadian date for The Rolling Stones on their No Filter Tour. In celebration of the Canada’s 152nd birthday, Burl’s Creek, located between Barrie and Orillia, will be offering camping on the weekend of the concert and has dubbed the concert as Canada Rocks With The Rolling Stones. Joining The Beaches in opening for The Rolling Stones will be Sloan, The Glorious Sons, One Bad Son and Dwayne Gretzky. Members of The Beaches are Jordan Miller, Kylie Miller, Leandra Earl and Eliza Enman McDaniels. The Miller sisters and McDaniels all grew up in the Beach. of wonderful steel blue florets. Profuse blooming, not affected by heat/humidity/ drought, no deadheading. You can pretty much plant it and forget it. 3.) Tangerine Slice APeel (Thunbergia). I have never before grown this fast climber, also called blackeyed Susan vine, and I was enchanted by the way it twined up its stick trellis to about 6 feet high. Cheerful round orange and yellow flowers with a black centre lend a tropical touch to sunny areas. Several would make a striking display on an obelisk or chain link fence. 4.) Lemon Coral (Sedum mexicanum). This beauty is a real shocker. It looks like a spreading tuft of succulent grass in bright yellow-green. Tough as nails, easy-care drought-tolerant, it’s a great low “filler” in a mixed container and fun to use as an edging for sunny beds. With our spring likely to continue wet and cool for a while, you can plant summer annuals (sometimes called “bedding plants”) now, and they won’t fry in sun and hot weather. There should still be a good supply in garden centres, too.

Tourney titles for East York baseball THE EAST York Baseball Association had a successful showing at a pair of tournaments recently. The Minor Mosquito (Under-10) AA team won the championship at the Bolton Tournament on June 1 and 2. On the same weekend, the Major Mosquito (Under-11) AAA team won the title at the Oshawa Tournament. In Bolton, the East York squad went a perfect 6-0 to take top honours in the 16team tournament. However, it was not an easy road despite the perfect record as East York had to play two games that went into extra innings (including a thrilling 11-inning contest in the championship game) to take the title. In Oshawa, the Major Mosquitos also chalked up a perfect record over the weekend as they went 5-0. East York beat a strong team from Whitby in the championship game.

Variety Village wheelchair basketball player Melymick suits up for Canada COMING OFF a recent second place finish at the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League National Championships with his Variety Village Rolling Rebels team, Toronto player Lee Melymick is now looking forward to taking to the court for Canada in an upcoming exhibition game. Melymick, 24, has been a member of the Variety Village team in southwest Scarborough since 2015. Wheelchair Basketball Canada named him to their under-23 national team in 2017. In 2018, he was named to the Canadian Men’s National Team for the World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. Wheelchair Basketball Canada will be hosting both men’s and women’s international exhibition games this month in Toronto, and

CONSTRUCTION WORK is underway at the site of the demolished Rocca’s No Frills grocery store on Coxwell Avenue, and there are hopes that a new store will be open and operating at the location by the end of this year. “We continue to work hard to complete the renovation of Rocca’s No Frills,” said Karen Gumbs, director of public relations for Loblaw Companies, which is the parent company of No Frills, in a statement. “While the renovation has taken longer than originally planned, we are happy with the progress we are making. Our hope is to have the store open and servicing the community again before the end of the year.” Due to the need for urgent building repairs, the store closed suddenly in May of 2016 leaving many area residents who depended on it in the lurch. To take care of them, Loblaw has been run-
ning a shuttle from the Rocca No Frills parking lot to Dave & Charlotte’s No Frills on Carlaw Avenue since the closure. The majority of the old store has since been demolished and new footings, foundation, basement and some wall work has been completed.
Thrill of the Grill set for Danforth Avenue THE 10TH annual Thrill of the Grill is set to hit Danforth Avenue on Saturday, June 22. Hosted by chef Lynn Crawford, proceeds from the event will go to kidney cancer research at Sunnybrook Hospital’s Odette Cancer Centre.
