Glen Ames robotics team heading to California for international meet MEMBERS OF the Glen Ames Senior Public School robotics team will be heading to California this week to take part in their third straight international championships. The team, which calls itself the Guardians of the Galaxsee, consists of 10 Grade 8 students. They will be flying to California this Thursday to take part in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League, known as the FLL, international championships against teams from around the world.

The competition in Carlsbad, California goes May 17 to 19. This is the third year in a row that a Glen Ames team has qualified for the event, and the fifth time in the past eight years. Glen Ames is also the only Ontario public school that earned the right to compete internationally for this year, which makes them especially proud given the high level of competition from teams seeking to qualify, said coach and teacher Luke Martin. “Each year there is a less than one per cent chance of doing what

these students are doing,” he said. The FLL is an international alliance between Lego and FIRST. The challenge for the 2018-19 FLL season was Into Orbit, and it asked students to think like engineers and scientists facing an issue in outer space that needed a solution. The Guardians’ solution to the challenge was how to help astronauts deal with loneliness in space. Called Home Away From Home, the Guardians’ project uses a robot with a 360-degree camera that records video memories in the astronaut’s home which can be viewed

in virtual reality. The camera on the robot brings images of familiar faces and places right to the astronaut. Supporting astronauts’ mental wellbeing, as opposed to just their physical health, is becoming increasingly important for agencies such as NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) as space missions are becoming longer. The teacher coaches of the Glen Ames team are Mr. Martin and Ms. Buckley. Continued on Page 2

The perfect balance between your life's philosophy & your budget

CALLING IT a double-lane highway running between two residential areas, a Woodbine Avenue resident says traffic must be slowed on the road south of Queen Street East. Cathy-Anne O’Brien made the comment in the wake of a crash in front of the house she is living in on Woodbine Avenue at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, that has left a 25-year-old man with lifethreatening injuries. O’Brien said she and her husband heard the sound of the car hitting a hydro pole just north of the curve where Lake Shore Boulevard East ends and becomes Woodbine Avenue. “We heard one bang, then we heard a woman screaming and it was horrifying,” O’Brien told Beach Metro News Tuesday morning. “And then we heard another bang.” The first crashing sound was the hydro pole and part of a front porch planter being struck, and the second bang is believed to be from the vehicle

that crashed then striking two parked cars on Woodbine Avenue. According to police, the 25-year-old man driving a silver Mazda lost control of the vehicle. He suffered life-threatening injuries and his female passenger, 20, suffered non life-threatening injuries. Tuesday’s crash took place just two doors north of an earlier accident on Woodbine in which the driver of an SUV lost control and hit the front porch of a house on the east side of the road on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 20. O’Brien is also calling for traffic in the area to be slowed down. “It’s a horrible stretch of road. You take your life in your hands trying to back out of the driveway,” said O’Brien. She pointed out one of their vehicles which was struck was parked on the road this morning because it is so dangerous to back out of the driveway. “There’s nothing to slow them down,” she said of drivers who routinely speed along that stretch of Woodbine. “It’s a double-lane highway right before you leave and enter a pedestrian area.”

O’Brien said something needs to be done to slow drivers down. “Maybe it’s speed bumps or something else.” She added cars being driven too fast and too aggressively is a problem throughout the Woodbine and Queen area. “Speed is definitely an issue. There are kids and pets in this neighbourhood and it’s infuriating.” Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford told Beach Metro News that two accidents of a similar nature in the area was unacceptable. “Our streets need to be safe for everyone,” he said on May 2. “Two accidents on the same portion of Woodbine within months is completely unacceptable. I have been in touch with Transportation Services to look at short, medium and long term measures to increase road safety in this portion of Woodbine. My office has also reached out to the Superintendent of 55 Division to ask for an increase of enforcement measures so we can deter unsafe driving like we saw this morning.”

New Kingston Road YMCA site is starting to take shape By Alan Shackleton

THE KINGSTON Road YMCA is shaping up to be a fitness and social hub for the east Toronto community, and Beach Metro News was able to take an exclusive tour of the site recently. The 60,000-square-foot facility on the south side of Kingston Road between Balsam and Beech avenues has been years in the making, but the construction is now at a point where a clear picture can be imagined of what it is going to look like when it is finished. There will be two pools, a hot tub, conditioning/weight room, multipurpose fitness studios and a full-size gymnasium. Input from area residents played a big role in how Kingston Road YMCA would look and the programs it would offer, said Virginia Dimoglou, General Manager. “We were very engaged with the community, and swimming and learn-toswim was a key thing being asked for, along with a gym,” she said during the tour. The new Kingston Road YMCA is replacing the former Y at the site, which was much smaller and did not have a pool. Three pools The new one will have three of them: a four-lane, 25-metre lap pool, with a ramp entrance making it fully accessible; a fitness and therapeutic pool with a movable floor to control the depth; and a hot tub on the pool deck. Dimoglou said having the hot tub on the deck was one of the features community members asked for during consultations. The new Kingston Road YMCA has joined with condo developer Mitchell and Associates for the building of the new facility. The condo portion, known as The Beech House, will take the top five floors of the six-storey building, with 95 units featuring terraced balconies on the south side. The YMCA will have fitness/weight room and multipurpose rooms at ground level, with the pools and

the gym one floor below. The building’s other underground floors will have parking for both condo residents and Y users. A ground breaking to start construction took place in October of 2015, and the facility is expected to be completed and opening its doors in 2020. There will be lots of windows fronting Kingston Road to let the light in for users and to make the facility open and inviting to the community, said Dimoglou. The ground floor will also overlook the pools and gym, which will mean there will be lots to see and do at the Y. “It will be fun to see all the people using and enjoying the space,” said Alex Versluis, Senior Vice President, Property Management and Development for the YMCA of Greater Toronto. From a building standpoint, the facility will also be environmentally friendly as it meets LED Gold Standards, he said. The multipurpose studios will be exactly as billed, as

they have been built to be flexible and adaptive to the community’s needs.

A place for all There will also be space close to the fitness areas for childcare so caregivers can use the facilities while remaining close to their children. Dimoglou, who lives in the community, knows firsthand that excitement is building as the facility moves closer to completion. “I know people are getting excited about it,” she said. And it will be a place for all ages, from toddlers learning to swim to seniors meeting for social or fitness sessions, to teens and adult groups playing basketball, volleyball and other gym sports. “There’s space for kids to learn sports and for adults to play sports,” said Dimoglou. Freda Rout: A life well lived her green flowered dress across the dance floor that night, he told his friend that he was going to marry her. They wed on April 8, 1944. In 1953, they moved to Canada living in several locations in the Beach neighbourhood. In 1960, they bought their house on Firstbrooke Road, where they lived with her parents until their deaths. Freda was a good seamstress and a wonderful knitter. The owner of a local wool store paid Freda to knit sweaters for his customers. Jeff, who had been a butcher in England and worked as a custodian for the Toronto District School Board, was very talented at needlepoint. The couple sold their crafts at Norway Public School sales, at Firstbrooke street sales, and in the gift shop at Michael Garron Hospital (formerly Toronto East General Hospital). They donated

Maybe you greeted her on Firstbrooke Road as she swept her sidewalk, or perhaps you waved to her as she watched the street from her enclosed porch. Sadly, Freda Rout, a long time Beach resident, has passed away. Freda Elizabeth Rout died on Thursday, April 18 in her 98th year at Michael Garron Hospital, a place that was near and dear to both Freda and her late husband, Jeff. Freda was born on Sept, 28, 1921 in Northumberland, England. She grew up in difficult times. Great Britain and its allies were recovering from the First World War and soon to be involved in the Second World War.

Freda Rout was a long time Beach resident, moving into her home on Firstbrooke Avenue in 1960. Freda did her part to help during the war by serving in the Navy, Army and Air Force Institute (NAAFI). the proceeds from the sale of their crafts to the hospital. Their generous donations to our local hospital continued throughout their lives and after their deaths. Freda loved to read, especially works of fiction about life in Great Britain. Writing in her journal was a daily activity for Freda until arthritis in her hands made it too difficult. Over the decades Freda maintained contact with her British friends and family, and her Canadian friends through letter writing and cards. She would purchase her cards for the year and set them up in a monthly filing system so no one was forgotten. During her final days she wrote her last Easter cards to four dear friends in England, one of whom she used to walk to school with as a child. Freda had a marvellous mind and memory. While in the hospital, the doctor told her that her CT scan showed a brain far healthier than most 65 year olds! She kept her mind busy with word search books and jigsaw puzzles. Freda was a kind and generous neighbour. Whenever a neighbour tried to give her something like homemade muffins or a turkey dinner, the neighbour never left empty-handed; Freda always had a box of cookies or a bag of candy to give in return for the kindness extended. Jeff and Freda never owned a car. They preferred to cycle or walk. Freda could be seen walking all over the Beach neighbourhood with her trusty walker that she affectionately called Winnie. Until this past year, she would regularly walk to Coxwell and Gerrard, the Danforth, Queen and even as far as Victoria Park. Freda was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jeff, in 2012. Freda leaves behind her cousin, John Chisholm, of Devon, England, John’s children, Peter-John (Bridget), David (Jo), Alison (Denis) and Andrew (Jo) and their families. She was recently predeceased by Jeff’s sister, Peg Long of Norfolk, England. She is survived by her niece, Jane Long, and nephews, Jerry (Kerry) Long, Stew (Nona) Long and Rick (Sheena) Long and many great nieces and great nephews. Even as cancer took its toll, the doctor reported that Freda’s heart was strong. She had a big heart, and shared it with countless people. Her family, friends, and neighbours will hold Freda in their hearts and their memories. Written by Carole Crompton, a neighbour and friend of Freda.

New crossing guard helping students at Crescent Town Elementary School By Alan Shackleton

AFTER MONTHS of waiting for a pedestrian walkway that collapsed in November of last year to be replaced, a crossing guard has been stationed on Massey Square to help students at Crescent Town Elementary School safely cross between the school and the adjacent apartment buildings. The new crossing guard, Ozan Ozdogan, began his first shift at the location on the morning of Wednesday, May 1. In between escorting students and parents safely across the roadway at lunch that day, he commented on the strangeness of the location, which is a private road that separates the school and the apartments in Crescent Town, just west of Victoria Park Avenue north of Danforth Avenue. “When I first got here this morning, I wouldn’t have believed I would be working in such an odd location,” said Ozdogan, who is an experienced crossing guard. “It’s not really a street but it gets a lot of traffic, and there’s no crosswalk marked. It’s a very populated area.” And the area’s high population and

large number of students crossing Massey Square to and from the school is why Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford pushed for the crossing guard to be assigned to the area in the wake of the bridge collapse. “After months of working with local community leaders and the faculty of Crescent Town Elementary School we now have a crossing guard in place to make sure the children of Crescent Town Elementary School can get to and from school safely,” said Bradford in a statement. “Changes like this might seem small, but this is an important step forward to help our community become safer for everyone.” Bradford was also out at the location on Wednesday morning for the crossing guard’s first shift. Crescent Town Elementary School principal Harpreet Ghuman said the crossing guard was much needed given the high number of pedestrians and vehicles in the area. “So many people use this area and the bridge being down has caused a lot of concern,” he said. “Having the crossing guard there really helps.”

He said on the first morning of the crossing guard, there were a few drivers confused by being made to stop for pedestrians who were honking. Ghuman said that there are plans to formally mark the crossing and have signage up in the near future. Bradford’s office confirmed those plans, but a date for when that will happen has not yet been set. The elevated concrete pedestrian walkway, which was approximately 15 feet high partially collapsed onto the Massey Square road early on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 17, leaving a hole in the bridge and hanging concrete. The collapsed portion of the walkway was owned by Pinedale Properties. Since the collapse, the walkway portion has been entirely torn down and only the concrete supports remain. The TDSB owns a small portion of the walkway that connects to the Crescent Town school yard, but that was not the portion of the bridge that collapsed. Ghuman said the TDSB and Pinedale are working towards replacing the walkway later this year, but a final date for construction has not been set.

Man faces charges in Woodbine sex assault A 32-YEAR-OLD man surrendered to police in connection with a sexual assault investigation in the Woodbine Avenue and Kingston Road area. According to police, a woman was in her residence in the area when a man allegedly gained entry and sexually assaulted her at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, April 28. On Monday, April 29, police had released a number of surveillance video images of a man wanted in connection with the incident. On Monday evening, police announced that Cayle Dupuis, 32, of To-

ronto had surrendered to police. He is charged with sexual assault, prowl at night, criminal harassment, break and enter with intent and possession of a break-in instrument.

Man, 62, charged with assault A 62-YEAR-0LD has been arrested in connection with an incident outside a Danforth Avenue coffee shop that left a 78-year-old man with head injuries. According to police, the 78-year-old victim was standing outside a Starbucks at Danforth and Gough avenues at approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, when a man sitting in the coffee

shop’s patio area allegedly yelled and lunged at him. This caused the victim to fall and hit his head on the pavement, police alleged. The victim suffered severe facial bruising as a result of the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment, police said. On Tuesday, May 7, Barry Dennison, 62, of Toronto was arrested. He is charged with aggravated assault. He is scheduled to appear in court at College Park on Monday, June 17.

In My Opinion

Beach Citizen of the Year honours those who help community Patricia silver Beach Citizen of the Year, 2010

T

hey say “it takes a village”….and it takes an army of volunteers for the village to flourish. That’s what we have in the Beach. Whether it’s delivering newspapers or food, assisting with events, or providing a safe haven, volunteers make the Beach a kind and caring community. There are daily interfaith lunches, community cleanups, residents’ associations, a historical board, and more in our community. And annually, we recognize the

unsung heroes with the honour being chosen as Beach Citizen of the Year. The help of volunteers is vital to so many in our community. “We couldn’t do our Christmas outreach without the 500 volunteers,” said Debbie Visconti, Executive Director of Community Centre 55. “Hundreds of volunteers make a difference in people’s lives with after school activities, Meals on Wheels, newcomer programs and more,” said Mary Christie, Board Chair of Neighbourhood Group and Beach Citizen of the Year, 2007. “Beach Metro News couldn’t manage without its hundreds of carriers,” said Sheila Blinoff, Beach Citizen of the Year, 2018.

The school board recognizes not only the need to the community of the student volunteer hours contributed but also the learning that sets students on a path of contributing to society. It requires high school students to log 40 volunteer hours in order to graduate. My volunteer time is now spent with SING! The Toronto Vocals Arts Festival, Canada’s premier a cappella festival. We started with seven volunteers brainstorming at my kitchen table, contributing their time, expertise, and a small investment. It has grown to hundreds of volunteers who assist with artists, help audience members, manage logistics, drive, coordinate social media, handle finance, and more,

so that we can produce a 10-day festival that brings in 17,000 people in late May. And the rewards are plentiful. “Through volunteering, I have met wonderful people, learned so much, and had my life enriched beyond whatever I have done for others,” said Mary Christie. “Volunteering offers us the chance to apply each of our unique skills and knowledge, while experiencing wonderful personal growth, either to share our good fortune with those who for so many reasons fall between the cracks, or simply to support a local arts group who bring the talents and beauty of life to our communities,” said Leigh Smout, Beacher and SING Toronto Board Member.

As for me, as Co-Manager of SING! I’ve travelled the world with a cappella groups, met “superstar” singers and emerging artists, worked alongside other passionate music volunteers, and felt a sense of pride when people say “this is the best concert I’ve ever seen”. Do you know someone who should be recognized for their broad spectrum of volunteering over a long period of time, someone who inspires others to give back? Nominate them to be the next Citizen of the Year at www.beachcitizenaward.org. Oh – and I didn’t get paid to write this story. I’m a volunteer! Patricia Silver - Beach Citizen of the Year, 2010

Residents of almost 40 years will miss friends and the Beach but not the dog poo

The Royal Canadian Legion Zone D3 Youth Education Chair, Helen D. Pearce, right, and Elsie Higgins, left, wife of a Second World War navy veteran, present Gledhill Junior Public School Grade 3 student Jinyi Sun with the silver medal for Ontario for her poster entry in the Legion’s Remembrance Day contest.

MY WIFE and I are sad that we have sold our home on Lee Avenue. We shall be leaving The Beach(es) after living here for almost 40 years and moving to Moncton, actually Dieppe, New Brunswick in June to live close to our only daughter, her partner and only grandchild. We shall be leaving so many great friends behind, hoping to keep in touch, but family matters much to us. Seeing our grandson grow, being part of his life, enjoying the company of his parents and starting new adventures exploring the Maritime provinces are in front of us. As much as we will be missing many things, one thing we will not be missing is the dog poo in the park and increasingly it would seem on the sidewalks. We have been dog owners, own-

ing as many as three at a time, since 1990. We have always picked up after our canine family members. To us they always have been family. If we ever run out of bags or forget we return home to get a bag or ask a dog handler close by if they have a spare. Sometimes my wife observes owners not picking up and offers a bag. Adults, children and pets can walk through this poo if it is not picked up. We have - it’s disgusting. There is a new service in the U.S. I saw mentioned on the BBC site which might be considered: “Some dog owners in the U.S. who don’t pick up their pet’s poo, are being traced through DNA samples taken from the mess left behind”. DNA tracking is perhaps not the best way for society to go, especially

at times of concerns about surveillance and privacy. DNA testing on animals opens the door to perhaps DNA testing and tracking of people. But if certain dog handlers do not pick up, DNA is a solution. I am not sure how it works in U.S. I guess all breeders or owners might be required to provide sample of dog’s DNA when bred or licensed. Handlers may not always notice because they are busy on their phone or simply can’t be bothered. But it does not take much to know when Fido has to go. Come on people. Think of others and pick up. Otherwise, Toronto dog owners might be obliged to fund DNA collecting, analyzing and penalizing. Every home should have a dog – and every park and sidewalk should be free of poo. Mike Gadd

Open Doors: Spiritual Matters

Always look for the helpers Rev. Shelley McVea St. Saviour’s Anglican Church

HOLY WEEK. Unholy week. The seven days leading up to Easter are celebrated in the Christian tradition as the most sacred of times. Church services, pageants, Biblical re-enactments all highlight the story of the death and resurrection of the one we call the son of God. But when one looks at the actual events I sometimes think that they smack more of unholiness than its opposite. Betrayal, cowardliness, fear, denial, and violence seem to rule the day. It is disheartening. Is this really who we are? But surely we have progressed in the last two millennium. All it takes, however, is to open a newspaper or go online to see that this is not the case. A terrible accident fells Notre Dame. The Mueller report comes out. A journalist is shot in Ireland. More than 250 people are murdered at Easter services in Sri Lanka. It is all so disheartening. Is this really who we still are? Unholiness seems to have holiness beat. It’s only when I go a bit deeper and linger a bit longer that I am once again encouraged. Whether it is a story of natural disaster or of calculated destruction, there is always a smaller story. A vignette of decency, compassion, and assistance. In the Biblical story, a rich man donates his burial site for Jesus. Women prepare spices for the body. John adopts Mary as his mother. Even

Judas the betrayer immediately regrets his treachery. Peter the denier goes out and weeps bitterly. Maybe Fred Rogers’ advice is still applicable. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,” Rogers said to his television neighbours, “my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Sometimes the stories are buried on the back page, or do not show up online for days or weeks. But they are there if I look. Recently we have seen firefighters risking their lives (as they always do) to save Notre Dame and its treasures. Millionaires are already pledging vast amounts of money to help in the rebuilding. In P.E.I. political campaigning is halted just before an election by all parties when a candidate dies in an accident. Special services and remembrances are held in Toronto for Sri Lanka victims of violence. In the Beach, flowers and remembrances are placed in front of our friend’s convenience store to encourage his wife and children. People write letters, they send online messages to people they’ve never met when they hear stories of pain and suffering. I believe that in our hearts many of us do see that “we’re all in this together”. If we all do our tiny part, maybe a miracle of grace and mercy will take place. Our philosophers and theologians have been telling us this all along – but it is hard to believe when we see the enormity of the pain.

My little helping hand seems too small to matter. But this last week can bring us encouragement. The Jesus story ended not in a tomb but in the miracle of new life. So many of the treasures of Notre Dame were saved by a human chain. Individual hand by individual hand, piece by piece, a priceless heritage was rescued. This miracle took place not after the fire has extinguished but in the midst of the blaze. We don’t often get to choose what kind of week we are going to have; cool and peaceful, or filled with fiery pain. We wish and work for the first kind. But we often find ourselves in the second. If that’s the case, then let’s help each other become part of that human chain that can bring a miracle out of the blaze. The more of us involved the greater the number of treasures that can be saved — be they people, beautiful objects, the environment, or our civic discourse. If we don’t know where to start, maybe we can take Fred Rogers’ advice: Look for the helpers. They’re always there. Join them and be one too. So whatever kind of week you’re in right now – holy, or unholy – may you come into it as a helper and companion, ready to see where a miracle might occur. Rev. Shelley McVea is the priest-in-charge at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church located at 43 Kimberley Ave. Services are at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday. COME TO the best garden tour in the city – it’s being held right here in the Beach on the weekend of June 8-9. The Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) has chosen 21 spectacular gardens to feature in this year’s Through the Garden Gate tour. They’re large and small, sunny and in deep shade, formal and cottage-cosy. It’s a great opportunity to go behind the garden gates of the Beach and to get inspiration from places like those we’ve sampled here. The Art Lovers’ Garden

This calmly unpretentious garden near Glen Stewart Ravine fits its setting and its owners perfectly. Like many Beach gardens, the front is a sunny mix of natives and other perennials. Keeping it tended is a particular joy for the owner-gardener. “I like the routine of deadheading and weeding,” she says. The sense of peace continues in the shaded area behind the house, with its small stream and pond inspired by the winding stream in the woods nearby. This private area is home to several pieces of art chosen by the gardener’s husband, including a sleek black sculpted bird and a collection of masks decorating the outdoor dining room that’s in use every summer evening. You can lose yourself in the lush plantings behind this home north of Kingston Road. “It’s my canvas that I get to paint with plants,” says the owner, “and what an honour and joy to be part of this ever-evolving beauty.” Every flower and foliage plant, shrub and small tree, has been chosen with care and is tended lovingly each day. You’ll find gems like tree peonies, rhododendrons, dwarf conifers, magnolias and literally hundreds of Japanese maples here. Even the owner’s 300 indoor tropical plants

come outdoors for the summer. Herbs and other edibles fill the rooftop deck overlooking the pool, and produce from the vegetable garden perched on the hillside is shared with lucky colleagues at office lunches.

The Daring Small Garden Through the gate and behind the fence of this small personal garden lies a treasure box of flowers and foliage. This gardener aims for beauty, and she isn’t afraid to break the rules to get it. She doesn’t worry about the convention of

planting flowers in set she creates harmonious ent plants. She’s also fe things back to allow o their turn in the season And if something doe ply shift it to a better lo my own plants to fill in shade,” she explains. It’s a strategy that’ bursting with bloom changing conditions.

The Main Menu

May takes the cake for celebrations

M

ay is the month of celebrations – Queen Victoria’s Birthday, graduations, the first trip to the cottage, not to mention, birthdays, showers, weddings and anniversaries. All of these

require a cake to help in the festivities. This lemon orange cake is the chosen one. Moist, buttery and rich with the tang of citrus and a luscious drizzle to keep it moist, it can be decorated with berries of the season and is outrageously alluring served with a dollop of the lemon cream (recipe follows). The cake is big enough to serve a crowd, transports well and can be made ahead and frozen – in fact, transported frozen to a destination makes it taste as if it was just baked for that special occasion. Happy spring!

Lemon Orange Cake with Citrus Glaze Thoroughly spray the tube pan with baking spray to ensure easy release of the cake from the baking pan. Decorate the cake with thinly sliced half- moon orange slices marinated in orange liqueur; serve with seasonal berries and the lemon cream. Divine! 1 cup (250 mL) soft butter 2 cups (500 mL) granulated sugar 1 tbsp (15 mL) each, tightly packed grated orange and lemon zest 4 large eggs 3 cups (750 m) all – purpose, unbleached flour 1 tbsp (25 mL) baking powder

Jan Main is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@yahoo.ca

Cool. Stir in liqueur. Using toothpick, poke holes into cake, drizzle glaze over cake. Cake serves 10-12.

1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/2 cup (125 mL) each, plain yogurt and milk 2 tbsp (25 mL) fresh lemon juice

Lemon Cream

Lemon Orange Glaze 1/2 cup (125 mL) each, orange juice and lemon juice

This delicious sauce is sublime served with the cake or on its own as a mousse or frozen for an icecream.

1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar

1/2 cup (125 ml) fresh lemon juice (2-3 lemons)

2 tbsp (25 mL) quality orange liqueur

1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar

Pre-heat oven to 350 F (180 C). Spray 9-inch (23 cm) tube pan with baking spray. In a large mixing bowl using electric mixer, beat butter until creamy. Gradually beat in sugar, lemon and orange zest until smooth and creamy. Beat in eggs one at a time until fluffy. In separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt. In measuring cup, stir together yogurt, milk and lemon juice. Beat dry ingredients alternately with liquid ingredients beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Pour batter into prepared pan; spread batter to level. Bake cake in centre of oven for approximately one hour or until a toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool on cooling rack. Glaze: In saucepan over medium high heat, stir together orange and lemon juice, sugar and rind. Bring to boil; reduce heat and cook uncovered stirring about five minutes.

1 tbsp (15 mL) grated lemon rind 2 eggs 1 cup (250 mL) whipping cream In a medium saucepan whisk together lemon juice, sugar, rind and eggs until smooth. Cook over medium –high heat whisking continually until sauce is bubbling and thickened, 3-5 minutes. Immediately remove from heat and scrape into small mixing bowl. Place over a bowl of ice-cubes to chill quickly. Meanwhile, using an electric mixer with a deep bowl, beat cream until stiff peaks form. Fold lemon cream (also called lemon curd) into whipped cream until no white streaks show. Spoon into serving bowl; cover and refrigerate to serve as a sauce or freeze to serve as an ice-cream.

Pair of exhibits by photographer Kerry Hayes taking place locally LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER Kerry Hayes has a pair of exhibitions taking place this month at two venues in the Kingston Road Village. Considered one of the top feature film still photographers in the world, Hayes has worked on more than 90 movies and is one of Canada’s most sought after movie photographers. Hayes’ works will be on display as part of the 2019 Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival at the The Porch Light and also at SKAUT Design during the month of May. The photos on display as part of the Contact festival are Hayes’ Cape (Rosier) Light collection which explore the magical light, beauty and serenity of Cape Rosier, Maine. “In its juncture of sea, sky land and the occasional human form or artifact, Cape Rosier’s light is endlessly captivating,” said Hayes in a press release announcing the exhibit. The exhibit is inspired by the 1978 photography book Cape Light that broke ground at the time in colour photography and for the ac-

The Porch Light is located at 982 Kingston Rd., and the exhibit runs until May 30. Also, a collection of some of Hayes’ personal photography and from his 2018 Contact exhibition will be on display at SKAUT, 874 Kingston Rd., until May 26. Movies Hayes has worked on in his more than 35-year career include The Legends of the Fall, Spotlight, and the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water. Hayes was born and grew

up in New York City, and that was where his passion for photography was developed. He was shooting for magazines, corporations and design firms when he took on a job in 1982 on a movie set. Within three years he had been the photographer on films for Woody Allen, Sidney Lumet and John Huston. Hayes, and his late wife who is Canadian, moved to the Beach with their three young daughters in 1989 where he still resides and continues his photography career on both sides of the border. Countermeasure will be performing at this year’s upcoming SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival.

Upcoming SING! music festival features strong Beach connection A CAPPELLA music will take centre stage at SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival from May 24 to June 2. In its eighth year, Canada’s premier a cappella festival brings a star-studded lineup of international headliners to various Toronto venues for 10 concerts, seven free events and a variety of workshops. The festival has strong local roots as it is helmed by Artistic Directors Suba San-

karan and Dylan Bell, long time Upper Beach residents. Festival Founder and CoManager Patricia Silver, a Beach Citizen of the Year, is excited about this year’s lineup. “There is something for every musical taste, concerts with jaw-dropping headline singers, and even a mass choir event where everyone can join in.” Other local artists include members of Hampton Avenue, FreePlay, Cadence,

Countermeasure, Retrocity, Ruach Singers, and The Watch. Festival Manager J-M Erlendson started his stage career as a student at Beaches Alternative School, and now tours internationally with Countermeasure and Beatsync a Cappella. SING! will highlight an array of musical styles. For ticket info and schedules, please visit www.singtoronto.com

Mama Earth Organics has been in the Beach for more than 10 years. Heather and Alex Billingsley started the produce delivery service out of their garage on Scarborough Road delivering to just 13 neighbours, and have now seen the business grow to the point where Mama Earth delivers all across the Greater Toronto Area. “We’ve built a network of local farms and artisan partners, buying products directly and delivering them to our members’ doorsteps,” said Sabrina Santer, who started with Mama Earth in 2016. “We deliver weekly but our plans are flexible and customizable,” she explained. “We started with produce, and now have expanded to offer everything except meat products; essentially we can replace your grocery shopping.” The company has a huge local focus, offering exclusive ‘local baskets’ with treats from community businesses. “We’re trying to rebuild

a sustainable food system based on partnering with local organic farms such as Lunar Rhythm Gardens, Kawartha Organics and Living Earth Farm,” Santer said. More information about Mama Earth’s farm partners can be found at www. mamaearth.ca. The company also works with different bakeries that deliver fresh bread every morning with products from Prairie Boy Bread, St. Urbain Bagels, Brick Street Bakery and St. John’s Bakery. “Any food that’s not 100 per cent perfect enough for baskets are donated to animal sanctuaries such as Storey Brook Farms and the Wishing Well Sanctuary, where our scrap greens are taken to feed monkeys, pigs and other rescue animals— there’s a lot of important initiatives that we’re a part of,” Santer said. Mama Earth has donated to food banks such as Regent Park Community Food Centre, Feed it Forward, and The Stop Community Food Centre. They set a goal of $50,000 to contribute in food to community partners last

Based in the Beach, Mama Earth Organics delivers a wide variety of organic and artisanal products to their customers. year and ended up donating more than $130,000. Santer said that in addition to food donations, Mama Earth also sends scraps and leftovers to their community partners at HOP, where they convert food to compost, enriching the topsoils of local farms to yield more nutritious crops. “We launched Mama’s Kitchen last year where we provide prepared foods such as soups, salads, sides, mains, baked goods and prepped produce options,” she said. “Everything is made fresh from scratch everyday with 100 per cent organic

ingredients. We also rotate our offerings based on seasonal availability and prioritized local ingredients as much as we can.” Mama Earth works hard to help its customers fill their fridges with products from artisanal farmers that are not available at big box grocery stores. “We’re not just a delivery system,” said Santer. “We’re actively trying to build a food movement that wasn’t existing before.” For more information, please visit www.mamaearth. ca or call 416-850-8662. — BMN Sponsored Content—
