Robotics team makes history at California competition THE GUARDIANS of the Galaxsee took on the world in California recently and made history while they were there. The 10 members of the Glen Ames Senior Public School robotics team, who call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxsee, won first place in the Project Presentation category at the United States FIRST Lego League (FLL) Open Championships in Carlsbad, California on May 17 to 20. The win came against competition from 70 other teams including representatives from Japan, Korea, Australia, and across North America. Taking the first place prize in the presentation category made history as it was the first time a Toronto District School Board robotics team won a first in an international competition, said team coach and Glen Ames teacher Luke Martin. “The Guardians of the Galaxsee are now the top TDSB team of all time,” Martin said. “No small feat with some of our legendary teams of the past!” Glen Ames has been a powerhouse when it comes to robotics competitions in both the TDSB and across Ontario. This year, the Guardians also won the Toronto and provincial FLL titles which qualified them for the trip to California. It was the third year in a row that a Glen Ames robotics team qualified for the FLL international competition, and the fifth time in the past eight years. The Guardians team is made of 10 Grade 8 students at Glen Ames. They were the only Ontario public school team who earned the right Continued on Page 4

Foodland mural design proposals revealed By Alan Shackleton

BEACH RESIDENTS had a chance to take a look at a trio of proposals for the new mural to be painted on the east wall of the Foodland store at Queen Street East and Lee Avenue this summer during a community consultation meeting earlier this month. Artist John Kuna has been commissioned to paint the mural after being selected by a committee made up of Foodland, the Beach Village BIA and Mural Routes.

The meeting was held at the Beaches Branch Library on Monday, May 13 and was attended by Kuna, store owner Nick Kyriacou, representatives from Sobeys/Foodland and Tara Dorey of Mural Routes. Kyriacou talked about how important the mural was to the community how happy he and Foodland were to share the proposals with residents. “The community means so much to us and we are thrilled to be revitalizing the mural which we know

means so much to the community,” he said. The wall had been the site of a mural called Beach Got Rhythm painted by Rudolf Stussi and his son Errol in 2007 that depicted a number of Beach landmarks and jazz musicians. That mural had to be removed in November of last year due to cracks in the wall that had made it unsafe. At the time of its removal, Foodland vowed to work with the community to replace it. Those at the May 13 meeting

could fill out a ballot voting for which of the three proposals was their favourite, and also provide input directly to artist Kuna as part of a question-and-answer session. Kuna introduced the three proposals he had created, pointing out that all three had some common themes but were presented in different artistic styles. Those artistic styles were realistic for Option 1; semi abstract for Option 2; and abstract for Option 3. He said that the goal of the muContinued on Page 23

DOUG BROWNE will be closing the door at the Beach fire hall for the last time on Wednesday, May 29. A firefighter since 1984, and Captain at Beach Fire Station 227 on Queen Street East just east of Woodbine Avenue for the past 10 years, Browne will be retiring at the age of 62. For Browne, retirement will not mean leaving the community he has lived and worked in for many years. Browne grew up in the Beach on Hambly Avenue, attending Williamson Road and Glen Ames schools, and then Malvern Collegiate. His family roots in the community are deep as his mother Rodene also attended Williamson Road school He took part in sports programs at the Balmy Beach Club while growing up, and he still plays men’s hockey with the club’s league. “I’ve playing hockey with Balmy Beach for 42 years, since I was 20,” he said. Along with hockey, Browne also played lacrosse in the Beach while growing up. For many years he lived on Glen Manor Road and now more recently has moved to the Hunt Club area in southwest Scarborough. “I’m a local boy at the local fire hall and it is very dear to me,” he said. Browne began his firefighting career in 1984 when he joined the North York Fire Department. He’s a carpenter by trade and worked in the business before deciding to apply to be a firefighter. “I loved being a carpenter but I needed more security,” he said. Also, firefighting was in the family as his father Bill was a firefighter with the

His first job with the North York Fire Department was at a station up near York University. “That was about the furthest I could be away from where I lived, but it was still

good to be on as firefighter,” he said of that first posting. As his career progressed, he was able to work his way south and finished up with the North York department at a station on Bermondsey Road just before megacity amalgamation at the start of 1998. That amalgamation merged not only the six former municipalities that

made up what had been Metro Toronto, but it also combined all of their individual fire departments into one Toronto Fire Service. Browne had just passed the North York department’s captain’s test prior to amalgamation, which led to numerous changes in the way fire services were delivered and how the city would be divided and who would be working where, so he was not sure what was going to happen next or where he would be assigned so he applied to be at the Beach station. “A guy said to me to put my name in the hat and I’d be walking to work in a couple of weeks,” Browne remembered. It wasn’t quite that fast, but he was Acting Captain at the Beach station in 2001 and has been Captain for the past 10 years. He said the station, the firefighters who work in it and their pumper truck play a role in the community far beyond responding to calls. “We go to a lot of social functions, have students in and we do all the school fun fairs, and we love it,” said Browne. And being local, Browne said he often meets people he knows when on calls, at community events or simply walking by the station when he is outside. “We have a little ritual that when we back the truck back into the station that I am the guy that closes the door,” he said. “I always look around before I go in to see if there’s anyone I know and need to say hello to.” But before Browne closes that door for the final time tomorrow, there was a retirement party held for him last Thursday at the Balmy Beach Club attended by many friends and colleagues.

Glen Ames students earn a first place finish at international robotics meet Continued from Page 1 to take part in the California competition. Along with the first place win, the Guardians also finished in the Top 8 in Core Values and Project categories — both of which were also the first time a TDSB team had earned such high honours at the FLL international championships. The FLL is an international alliance between Lego and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Each year it presents robotics teams from around the world with a challenge which requires robotics to find a solution. The challenge for the 2018-19 FLL season was Into Orbit, and it asked students to think like engineers and scientists facing an issue in outer space that needed a solution. The Guardians’ solution

In My Opinion

Upcoming 75th anniversary of D-Day must be remembered Alan Shackleton Beach Metro News Editor

I

would ask that everyone please read the letter on the bottom right had corner of this page; it’s from veteran Allan Bacon and reflects on the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers on D-Day and in the days and months afterwards. The 75th anniversary of D-Day will be marked on June 6 of this year, looking back to that day in 1944 which was the beginning of the end of the Second World War. Bacon served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment during the war.

In his letter, he tells how he lost his right arm in a grenade explosion and then after the war went to work helping the War Amps of Canada in their Toronto chapter. In a release from the War Amps, Bacon said that his first thought after realizing he had lost his arm was how upset his mother would be. “This will break my mother’s heart,” he thought. While recovering in a hospital in England, Bacon learned how to use his left arm and he continues to live a long life. Bacon, at age 98, now lives in the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre in Toronto. He grew up in east Toronto, attending Danforth Tech and both

his mother and grandmother are buried in St. John’s Norway cemetery. He is among many local men and women who served their country in the Second World War so that we may live in freedom. Many of them gave their lives on June 6, 1944 as troops from Canada, Great Britain and the United States landed on five beaches on the coast of Normandy, France to take the first steps towards the liberation of Europe. It was the job of Canadian soldiers, making up the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, to take Juno Beach that day. Fourteen thousand Canadian soldiers landed on Juno Beach on June 6, facing mined obstacles and

heavy machinegun fire from German strongholds. The Canadian troops managed to fight their way through and took the towns of Bernieres, Courseulles, and St. Aubin. This helped establish safe routes for more and more soldiers to cross into Europe. It would take almost a year before Germany finally surrendered in May of 1945, but June 6, 1944 was the day that turned the tide and ultimately ended the war. On D-Day, 340 Canadians died in the attack on Juno Beach and another 574 were wounded. American troops took Omaha and Utah beaches that day, and British troops secured Gold and Sword beaches also at the price of

hundreds and hundreds of lives. As the calendar turns from May to June later this week, it’s important that we all stop and take some time to remember D-Day, those who were there and all who have served for our freedom over the years. Take a moment that day to think about those who came before you; maybe grandparents or great grandparents who lived through the Second World War or served in the military. Also, please, take some time to talk to your children and let them know the importance of D-Day and that we must always honour those who gave so much that we may live in the wonderful country that we do today.

Letters to the Editor

Dog owners need to show more respect for all Beach residents Re: ‘Resident of almost 40 years will miss friends and the Beach but not the dog poo’, Letters, May 14.

I WAS dismayed and disheartened to read that residents of Lee Avenue, after living in the Beach area for 40 years, felt the need to leave a message behind about irresponsible dog owners in the Beach. In my opinion there are two types of dog owners in the Beach – responsible ones and irresponsible ones. Indeed it is very much a doggy neighbourhood and that is great. In order to cater to our doggy neighbourhood the City of Toronto developed at considerable cost an offleash area for the benefit of the responsible dog owners to let their pets run loose and enjoy the beach. In fact the off-leash area was upgraded in recent years with new

fences and gates; an expense the city has paid for the benefit of dog owners and moreover non-dog owners. However, the less than responsible dog owners in the neighbourhood choose to let their dogs run loose in Kew Gardens instead. Over the years I have seen cyclists toppled from their bikes on the bike trail as a result of an out of control dog and I have heard of many more similar accidents. But also our precious Kew Gardens which is enjoyed by so many, tended to by a dedicated gardening team is ruined by irresponsible dog owners. My wife and I walk in Kew virtually every day and have gotten to know the gardeners who work there tending the flowers and plantings all year long. Their efforts are appreciated so much. The gardens are lovingly cared for

and enjoyed by all. In conversation with the gardening staff, they have shared stories about the dog poo which frequently litters their work space. On their behalf I have complained to our local councillor and the mayor to ‘please oh please enforce the bylaws’. Yet, I have never seen a bylaw officer enforcing the bylaws despite my complaints and the complaints that the gardeners have made themselves. I can walk through the park any day at any time and see dogs off leash running through the park. Whenever I have said to a dog owner that there is an off leash area specifically for dogs to enjoy a free run, I have been abused, sworn at, and scorned by the dog owner. There is no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad dog owner. Please respect the Beach for everyone to use and enjoy. Patrick D.

Never forget the sacrifices soldiers made on D-Day ON JUNE 6, 1944, I arrived by boat on Juno Beach in Normandy, France, with the Canadian Scottish Regiment. My role was in the mortar platoon. On June 17, I was based in a barn, anticipating an attack that never came. I went into a nearby shed to disarm the grenades when one exploded, resulting in the loss of my right arm. When I returned to Canada, I became a member of The War Amps, which was started by amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other adapt to their new reality

as amputees. Through the years, we have made it a goal to remember and commemorate our fallen comrades, and to educate youth about the horrors of war. In Normandy, many Canadians died or suffered wounds that they had to carry with them for the rest of their lives. As we mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day next month, it’s important that we never forget the sacrifices that were made.

About eight years ago, the congregations of the two United churches in the Beach decided to merge into one and became Beach United Church. They sold Bellefair United to developers, and with the proceeds, renovated the old Kew Beach United Church on Wineva Avenue. As seen in the top photo (taken seven years ago) solar panels were fitted, the old gymnasium was razed and the entire lower level and sanctuary was refurbished and updated. Years ago, I was involved with the Boy Scouts out of this very church. I distinctly remember the underbelly of this building resembled a castle labyrinth more than the basement of a church. If you have an old photo of a church here in the Beach, I would love to see it. Please contact me at gdvandyke61@gmail.com

ake a minute, maybe a few, and just go outside and listen to the sounds of the birds. I think we can all appreciate it, because we all notice it. After a long winter, waking up one morning and realizing the birds are singing is rejuvenating. Don’t we tell our friends/ family/co-workers about it? “Wow, the birds were so loud this morning!” And of course it’s not

just the sound, but it’s the visuals. Every colour of the rainbow is found on some of the most beautiful birds in the world. Of course there are peacocks, and toucans, and beautiful birds all over the world that we don’t see. But don’t forget: people who live with toucans are often awed at the beautiful colours of our blue jays, cardinals, and orioles. The biggest problem for me this time of year is that my neck always hurts because I’m not used to looking up so much! But, if the birds are calling you to look up higher in the trees, you really should try.

Watch for the reds, blues, oranges, yellows, blacks, whites and other amazing colours. But try to keep your mouth shut when you’re looking. The bugs seem to be everywhere too! Keep your mouth closed or you will get extra protein you didn’t want. The gnats, in particular, are feeding the warblers, orioles, and swallows among others. This is the time to just enjoy the arrival of the spring migration of birds everywhere. Go to Ashbridges Bay and Tommy Thompson Park and look up the trees, in the bushes, or on the water. Go for a walk through

your neighbourhood or just sit in your backyard, listen, and look around. At my house I have ruby throated hummingbirds buzzing at my nectar feeder. There was only one yesterday, but a second has shown up! Baltimore Orioles are chasing each other and sitting on the trees where I put out fresh oranges. Rose-breasted grosbeaks are eating the suet and nuts from my backyard feeders, and male cardinals are taking seeds from the front feeders and bringing them to their females… must be nice. Take five minutes outside and let me know what you see!

Clockwise from top left, a scarlet tanager, a Cape May warbler, a yellow throated warbler and a rose-breasted grosbeak are among the birds you might see and hear this spring if take a walk in a local park or even just around your own neighbourhood.

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto

The Balmy barrister and the stork derby Bernie Fletcher

I

n May we welcomed the royal baby Archie (a good ‘heir’ day) and celebrated Mother’s Day. Back in 1926 a prominent lawyer who lived in Balmy Beach didn’t show much respect for motherhood. In his will, Charles Vance Millar left a fortune “to the mother who has since my death given birth in Toronto to the greatest number of children” within 10 years.

The photo above shows Meaghan Follows playing the role of a fictional reporter in the TV-movie The Stork Derby, which was inspired by Charles Millar’s will. The 1936 archive photo below shows a cinder spreader in front of the house on Scarborough Road that was once home to Balmy Beach’s Millar. balmy, adjective: 1. pleasantly warm 2. foolish or eccentric Balmy Beachers enjoy a good joke, but Millar carried things too far. In life and in death he was an eccentric prankster. When he keeled over from a heart attack on Halloween night in 1926, he left tricks and treats for the upright citizens of Toronto the Good, including beer and racetrack shares for ministers opposed to drinking and gambling. The most controversial clause in his will caused a sensation in the depths of the Great Depression and led to the “Great Toronto Stork Derby” with families competing to have the most “bundles of joy”. Millar owned land north of Queen Street in partnership with the Munro family. In 1908 the Beach was becoming a popular suburb and they subdivided the area into 205 lots. Millar built a large, frame house (shown in the black and white archive photo) for himself and his mother atop the hill on Maple Avenue. He was a dutiful son and his mom Sarah lived with him until her death in 1917. Balmy Beach was annexed into the city in 1909 and a number of street names had to be changed. There already was a Maple Avenue in Rosedale so the street became Scarborough Road. Lynwood was re-named Kingswood Road. and Glendale became Bingham Avenue.

Bilingual Nursery School A heartfelt thank you to the Beach community for an amazing 27 years as we bring our final year to a close at the end of June.

THANK YOU MERCI GRACIAS ARIGATO GRAZIE SHUKRAN XIEXIE A final celebration will take place Friday, June 14 from 10 - 11:30 am in St. Aidan’s Church. Alumni invited to come by and say hello from 10:30 - 11:30 am

On Nov. 2, 1926 the mansion at 75 Scarborough Rd. was filled with distinguished mourners for Millar’s funeral presided over by Rev. Cotton of St. Aidan’s. It would be the last time a clergyman had a good word to say about Charles Millar. When his will was read, many thought it was a joke. Millar had been known to drop dollar bills on the street just to watch people pick them up. It was reported that the balmy bachelor slept out on his porch winter and summer. One time Millar made a bet that horse ownership didn’t take any skill. He would just buy the best horse. In 1915 his entries finished first and second in the King’s Plate at Woodbine. Millar stayed at home in his garden. The wealthy lawyer and financier had no close family. Distant relatives contested the will but courts ruled it to be legal. In the Dirty Thirties the world was gripped by unemployment, poverty and the rise of fascism in Europe. The Toronto Daily Star wanted a way to sell newspapers and take minds off the misery of the day. Readers got their two cents worth of headlines with profiles of the frontrunners in the bizarre “stork derby” with contending families treated like horses in a race to the Oct. 31, 1936 finish. On this day (May 28) in 1934 another Ontario baby story became sensational world news.

The Dionne Quintuplets were born near North Bay. The government took the five infants away from their parents and displayed them as a tourist attraction. Hollywood came calling and the quints appeared in a number of films including The Country Doctor (1936). If the Dionne family had lived in Toronto, their 12 children would have easily won the baby race. Four women with nine babies each were declared the winners and shared half a million dollars. In The Stork Derby (2002) Megan Follows plays a fictional reporter who covers the story. The TV-movie depicts how immigrant and Catholic women were discriminated against in a Protestant-dominated city. Today Little Italy has a plaque to the memory of court interpreter Grace Bagnato who helped many newcomers and was shut out from the fortune. Charles Millar was trying to make a cynical point that everyone has their price. Perhaps he got the last laugh from the grave. The big house on Scarborough Road is long gone. It became a nursing home in the 1930s and was torn down in the mid-1950s to make way for an apartment building. A part of Balmy Beach lore was lost with it. I would love to hear from any reader who remembers the house on Scarborough Road and the strange tale of the “stork derby”.

‘Home of the Robbie’ sign back at Birchmount Stadium IMMORTALIZED IN song and a Scarborough icon for decades, the ‘Birchmount Stadium Home of the Robbie’ sign is back in place at the sports facility located in southwest Scarborough. A ceremony held at Scarborough Community Council on the morning of Wednesday, May 22, celebrated the return of the sign of after an absence of a number of years. The sign had been on the exterior wall above the south entrance to the stadium for years, recognizing that Birchmount was the home of the championship games of The Robbie International Soccer Tournament which has been taking place in Scarborough since 1967. The original sign was removed during stadium renovations a number of years ago, and had not been replaced until this month. Entering its 53rd year this June and July, The Robbie is the world’s largest youth soccer tournament for charity. Since its inception, the tournament has raised funds for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. The tournament is named after Robbie Wimbs, who had cystic fibrosis and was the inspiration for holding the first tourney back in 1967 which featured eight teams and raised just over $47. In the decades since, The Robbie has raised almost $2 million for CF Canada. More than 400 boys and girls soccer teams are expected to take part in this year’s Robbie Festival (for teams ages seven to 12

Robbie soccer tournament officials Don Fletcher and Mike Ellis were joined by Scarborough Community Council members Michael Thompson, Gary Crawford, Jim Karygainnis, Jennifer McKelvie and Cynthia Lai, and Mike Martin, from Toronto Parks and Recreation, to celebrate the return of the Birchmount Stadium Home of the Robbie sign to the southwest Scarborough stadium. The ceremony was held Wednesday, May 22, morning at the Scarborough Community Council meeting at the Scarborough Civic Centre. on June 22 and 23) and the Robbie Tournament (for teams ages 13 to 18 on June 29, 30 and July 1). Championship games will take place at Birchmount Stadium on July 1. At Wednesday’s ceremony, Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford said the tournament, which is run by volunteers, is an example what can be “achieved by kind hearts and hard work.”

JUST LISTED |

He pointed out that since it started, some 12,000 teams and 250,000 soccer players have taken part in The Robbie. “The tournament has also been immortalized in the Barenaked Ladies song One Week with the line ‘Birchmount Stadium, Home of the Robbie,’” he said. Mike Ellis, chair of the Robbie International Soccer Tournament,

said the return of the sign to the stadium is good news for both the tourney, local soccer and Scarborough as whole. “This means a lot to The Robbie and soccer,” he said. “We are an important Scarborough tradition and a part of the history of the community. We’re very pleased to see the return of the sign.” A ceremony is tentatively planned for later this month to offi-

cially unveil the sign at Birchmount Stadium, and it is hoped some members of the Barenaked Ladies will be able to attend. In a tweet last year, the band said on its Twitter account that the line “Birchmount Stadium, Home of the Robbie” was its favourite Canadian reference in all of its songs. A COMMUNITY meeting on a development proposal for 10-30 Dawes Rd., located south of Danforth Avenue, is set for Thursday, May 30. The proposal, though not officially part of the Main Street Planning Study consultations, will impact that area as it is calling for a 33-storey and a 26-storey mixed use building with 539 residential units.

The Main Street Planning Study began in 2017 and aims to city help staff implement policy direction for the area, which will encourage appropriate residential and employment intensification. The May 30 meeting is at Hope United Church, 2550 Danforth Ave., from 7 to 9 p.m. Call Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford’s office at 416-338-2755 for more info.

great Canadian and a Beacher. The union and trade movement has a very long history, so I am just putting together a brief outline of it in the City of Toronto. We here in the Beach had one of the largest and oldest unions in the country. They were the railroad employees of the Grand Trunk Railway, later the Canadian National Railway (CNR). There were close to 450 men working in the Main and Gerrard area and they had many railroad organizations, we now call them unions. Their objective was to help every railroad worker – firemen, engineers, brakemen, freight handlers etc… in every way possible. This was the reason the different organizations and unions were formed; to make sure that the workers had the right of benefits, safe working conditions, correct wages and be able to live as a person should be able to in Canada. This railroad movement is still in existence and will be for good! There were many independent unions in the city and they didn’t have much clout, so in 1871 they decided to amalgamate and found the Toronto Trades Assembly. This didn’t work out so well because of bickering and pressure from the companies and politicians, but it lasted for nearly 10 years. The workers in the city wanted nine-hour days, better working conditions and more rights so they put together a new organization called the Toronto Trades and Labour Council. This was to be the new union powerhouse in the city for the next couple of decades. The head of the council was President Jim Wilson and there were other officers in charge of education, finance etc.. They were a government of their own, and for thousands of union men and women this was their hope against the “big bosses”, the government, big business and those who were against the unions and the council. It is impossible to put the history of the early union movement in Toronto into this one article, but we know that because of them the workers did receive better working conditions. But to do this, they had to hold strikes. I will now mention some of those strikes. One of the largest strikes was in 1887, when 700 workers went on strike against

the Toronto Street Railway Co. (TSRC) which was owned by Sir Frank Smith. His motto was that none of his employees would belong to any union. If they did, they had no job. This was a violent strike. The TSRC brought in outside labour (scabs) and special constables to go against the workers and there was violence on both sides. In the end, the workers lost the strike but this was the beginning of more unions being formed in the city. There was also a strike by the Typographical Union in 1872 in which 200 employees were involved against the leading newspapers of the day led by The Globe (now known as The Globe and Mai). The strikers held mass meetings and protests to try and shut the newspapers down. At one time, 28 leaders of the strike were arrested. They retained lawyers for their union and in the end they won a 54-hour work week and a few other benefits after striking for 15 weeks. In 1901, the Railroad Teamsters Union involved 212 workers in a 10-day strike. My space is limited, however, so I am not able to write about all the unions in the city and their names. You may agree or disagree with unions, but these pioneers of the union movement put their hearts, souls, energy, intellect, and financial resources to the cause of bettering working conditions for future generations. My space is limited, however, so I am not able to write about all the unions in the city and their names. There were more than 100 unions and movements in the early days of Toronto and here are the names of some of them: Broom Makers International Union No. 55; Cigar Makers International Union No. 27; Carpenters & Joiners United Brotherhood No. 27; Waiters Alliance of Toronto Local 108; Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen No. 322; Structural Iron Workers International; Painters and Decorators Brotherhood No. 3; Blacksmith’s International Brotherhood No. 17; Printing Press Union; Mailers Toronto Union No. 5; Civic Employees Unions No. 1 and No. 2; Bread Drivers Union; Horseshoers’ International Union NO. 49; Furriers Union; Typographical Union No. 91; Toronto Musical Protective Association; Plumbers, Steamers and Gas Fitters Union No. 16; Stonemasons Union; Teamsters Union; Builders’ Labourers’ International Union. These are only a portion, but as I said, space is limited. This is not the complete history of Toronto unions, just some of my research. Any comments, please let me know.

The Neil McNeil Catholic High School lacrosse team won the city championship last week and will be heading to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) finals.

Neil McNeil teams earn city titles in track and field, lacrosse and rugby NEIL MCNEIL Catholic High School sports teams racked up three city championships last week, taking Toronto titles in track and field, lacrosse and rugby. The rugby team racked up a perfect 7-0 season, winning the Toronto District Catholic (Colleges) Athletic Association (TDCAA championship game 42-0 over Cardinal Newman. During the season, the Neil McNeil boys outscored their opponents 238-37. They will be now be taking part in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) boys A/AA rugby championships June 6 to 8 in Brooklin. The team is coached by Nicole Ross and community coach Iain McLeish, who is a rugby coach at the University of Toronto and the Balmy Beach Club. Ross said a number of the Neil McNeil team members also play rugby at Balmy Beach, which helped the team put in such a strong showing this season. Members of the Neil McNeil rugby team are Carmelo Addesi, Nic Collodo, Thomas Conrad, Ryan Doyle, Adam De Sousa, Jackson Gordon, Callum Kelley, Lucas Kelley, John Hargreaves, Darwyn Lewis, Liam Mahoney, Jaden McDonald, Zach Meyers, Miguel Moctezuma, Joseph O’Keefe, Patrick Oxley,

Michael Piamonte-Tally, Damon Pizzuti, Josh Plant, Owen Porter, Will Sharpe, Kobe Switzer, Grant Tomin, Marshall Van Vliet, Chris Yang, Tyler Yankovich, and Jim Yao. Good things continued to happen for Neil McNeil athletes as the lacrosse team beat Father John Redmond of Etobicoke 10-0 to take the TDCAA title. That win qualified them for the OFSAA lacrosse championships taking place in Owen Sound on June 5 and 6. Members of the lacrosse team are Callum Boyes, Brendan Brady, Garrety Chambers, Ben Gonsalves, Jesse Gonsalves, Jacob Hickey, Michael Hickey, Jake Jacques, Mark Janetta, Jacob Kinsella, Paul Ludwinski, Graeme MacLenna, Liam McKelvey, Ryan Moran, Jack Oldman, Michael Orlando, Will Palmer, Nick Parolin, Drew Perkins, Jack Platana, Patrick Saini, Christian Senarega, William Smith, Riley Wahlroth, and Malcolm Warcholak. Coaches of the lacrosse team are Colin Molloy, Mark England and David Delle Fave. Wrapping up the successful week was the track and field team which made history by winning its first ever TDCAA championship. Since the TDCAA starting holding track and field championships

they have been dominated by Michael Power (which won every title from 1963 to 1982) then St. Michael’s College (which won from 1983 to 2004). After St. Michael’s streak ended it was Michael Power again (2005 to 2009) then followed by Brebeuf in 2010 and 2011, and Chaminade College from 2012 to 2018. But the 2019 championship went to Neil McNeil. Since the 1980s, the Neil McNeil team were perennial second place finishers, and they have been a strong challenger to Chaminade’s impressive program. This year, however, Neil McNeil took the top prize. Under the guidance of head coach Jason Wood and assistant coaches Abigael Layton, Ashley Masterson, Steve Masterson and Arnold Lopez, Neil McNeil began developing a wider array of events to compete in and to have more athletes involved in track and field. That paid off this year with Neil McNeil taking the Midget Boys Title, the Senior Boys Title and the Overall Team Title. Individually, Neil McNeil runner Liam McCullagh was named Outstanding Male Midget Athlete of the Meet for his victories in the 800, 1,500, and 3,000metre races.

IF YOU have recovered from breast cancer or you know someone who has, a woman or a man, I hope you will take a few moments to read this article and consider joining the Pink Crusaders Dragon Boat Team, which is recruiting new members for its team that practices out of Ashbridges Bay. Pink Crusaders is one of the many dragon boat teams that form the club Rusty Dragons Adventures. Pink Crusaders started as a team for women and men who have survived breast cancer and has grown to include many who fortunately have not had cancer but want to support those who have. The physical benefits of dragon boating for those who have had lymph nodes removed because of breast cancer has been clinically proven to be very beneficial and of course everyone benefits from exercise. However this sport is more about being physically active or winning races – it is about being engaged with other

Local author Verveniotis talks about new book Author Gabriel Verveniotis summarizes his new book The Sanguinaires and answers quetions from Beach Metro News.

THE SANGUINAIRES: or what I hate most about everything is a satire of epic sorts. It is a book that reeks of booze, in that its composition was a consequence of so many worthy saloons. The book is about a world reacting to a collective vision of everyone’s last day on earth. Some people choose to riot now that they know their fate; others choose to despair in a world that is plunged into chaos. The government forces people to ingest a drug called Nepenthe to make people forget their vision. The Sanguinaires are the only people that are immune to this medication. The Sanguinaires set their efforts to make sense of their dark visions while still wanting to hold onto them because they would rather have the right to know what

the future has in store and suffer from that, rather than be in bliss but remain unaware. It is all set in Toronto but especially Main and Danforth and the Beaches. I grew up on the other side of the tracts (literally) from the beach and would often venture down and read my poetry as a teen to the beach where I would then tear it up and throw it away, all before the sunrise. The book is dedicated to my childhood best friend named Peyam who died by suicide. Q: Tell us about you? A: I am an accomplished philosopher who currently attends University of Toronto. Q: What do you major in at university? A: I study English. I believe in literature and English because I feel that our mortality can be captured in what we write and therefore English is my best shot

at making myself immortal, that’s why I got into it. Q: Online it reads that your book focuses on depression, death, anxiety, and perpetual paranoia, why this theme? A: I had to deal with growing up in a rough environment. I touched on these themes because I feel like they are the most important things to discuss in order so that we can feel resolved. Q: Remy one of the characters you speak about recurrently, why? A: He is one of the main characters. A crucial member. Remy is based on the ex-friend I was working with at a bar I called the Eastern in my novel, which is based in the same bar we both worked at. Q: Where do you live in the Beach and how long? A: I have lived in the Beach

My Perfect Day in the East End

A walk in Kew Gardens, coffee and food By Kimberley Dewar

MY PERFECT day in the East End would include a walk, some coffee and some shopping. Place for walking and hiking (with or without my dog) I love walking down to the Boardwalk with my dog Daizy where we’ll catch up with other walkers and chat about our dogs before heading up to saunter through Kew Gardens to admire the Redwood Dawn trees. Coffee shop

I have a couple of favourite coffee shops along Queen Street East. I’ll go to Tim Horton’s (2002 Queen St. E.) to enjoy a coffee while Daizy gets treated to some Timbits, or The Remarkable Bean (2242 Queen St. E.) which has a great atmosphere and friendly, kind staff.

Artist Kuna shares proposals for new Foodland mural Continued from Page 1 ral was not to be historical but rather a depiction of the healthy and active lifestyle of the community. “All three designs depict activities around the Beach neighbourhood with a focus on a healthy active lifestyle. All three reference the grocery store as the heart of the neighbourhood shown in the image of the young family enjoying a picnic on the beach with a Foodland grocery bag in the foreground. This not only shows the Foodland line of products as part of the Beaches lifestyle, but the Foodland logo on the grocery bag with the ‘Better food for all’ slogan can also be used as the logo signature in the mural,” he explained. Also, each mural will have an interactive area where people can take photos of themselves joining in as part of the artwork. Kuna pointed out the concepts were still “rough designs” and he was open to hearing suggestions and feedback. And those attending the May 13 meeting were not shy about providing that feedback. Comments included there being too much water around the Leuty Lifeguard station in one of the proposals, not enough greenery on the trees, no dogs or dog walkers in any of the proposals, and even the lack of body-shape diversity in the proposals. The general consensus at the meeting seemed to be leaning towards Option 1 based on comments made, though a final decision has yet to be made. Kuna is hoping to start painting by the middle of June, and the mural will be unveiled as part of celebrations surrounding the Beaches International Jazz Festival on July 27.

OPTION 1 (shown above) uses a realistic scenic approach. It references the Jazz Festival with the couple dancing in front of the Kew Gardens Gazebo (the Alex Christie Bandshell) where concerts are held on the left. Other landmarks are the Leuty Lifeguard Station and the Boardwalk with a view of the Toronto skyline. The gentleman sitting with his daughter on the right will be shown holding two ice cream cones. The interactive element in this mural is the dandelion with its seeds blowing in the wind before transforming into the fireworks display over Ashbridges Bay.

OPTION 2 (shown above) uses a semi abstract approach. It uses stylized renderings of the unique house facades along Woodbine Avenue as a decorative element which ties the composition together. It also shows the Boardwalk from its east and west perspective. The interactive element in this design are again the dandelion seeds blowing across the mural to show the changing of the seasons. People can take pictures of themselves blowing on the dandelion flower.

OPTION 3 (shown above) uses a more abstract approach. It depicts landmarks such as the exterior and interior of the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, Leuty Lifeguard Station and Kew Gardens Gazebo (the Alex Christie Bandshell). The Jazz Festival is referenced by the figures playing music and dancing. The Boardwalk and skyline is depicted to the right. The interactive element is the girl running with a kite. People may photograph themselves holding the kite string next to the little girl.
