Vicky Tsorlinis named Beach Citizen of the Year By Alan Shackleton
THE 2019 Beach Citizen of the Year is Vicky Tsorlinis. She will be honoured at a special ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 21 in the Millennium Garden in Woodbine Park starting at 12:45 p.m. Tsorlinis was named the 2019 Beach of Citizen of the Year for her formidable volunteer work and charity fundraising efforts on behalf of numerous local organizations. Tsorlinis began volunteering when her children started at Mal-
CT E L E E R
vern Collegiate as a way to be involved in the life of the school. She was treasurer of the parent council for nine years, and initiated numerous fundraising activities to benefit not only the school but also groups in the community in need of support. “I was a Grade 9 parent and I wanted to get involved,” she told Beach Metro News in an interview. It started with craft sales for Malvern C.I., and now her fundraising work has expanded to include not only the craft sale events but also book sales.
Once her children, Isaac and Phebe, graduated she stayed involved in volunteering and fundraising because she was good at it and there was a need in the community. Tsorlinis can’t even begin to estimate how much money she has raised over the more than two decades she has been involved in helping out local groups, but said that on the past 57 book sales alone it has been approximately $56,000. She said supporting local organizations is a key criteria of the fundraising efforts.
“It’s important to support our grassroots organizations,” she said. “Those are the ones that really need it.” Some of the organizations her fundraising efforts have supported include Blake Boultbee Youth Services, Community Centre 55, the Red Door Shelter, Emily House, the Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care, Hospice Toronto, and Sanctuary Toronto which primarily helps the homeless. Tsorlinis said she puts in about 25 hours a week on her volunteer work, balancing that with her full-
time job managing a downtown dental office which she has been doing for 34 years. “It can be a lot of work, but a lot of it can also be done at home and I have a strong presence on Facebook which also helps,” she said. She most certainly does not consider volunteering a chore at all. It’s something she loves to do as it helps others, and believes it is a key part of being a good community member. “Volunteering is the norm for Continued on Page 2

my family,” she said of her children and husband John. “Not volunteering would be the exception.” Tsorlinis said that for the book sales, she makes sure all the books being sold are clean and in good condition, which often means bags and boxes of books at her home. “I pick up and sort all the donated books, make sure
they are organized before the sales.” The book sales take place at a number of locations including the Shoppers Drug Mart on Queen Street East in the Beach. Tsorlinis said she was thankful to pharmacist/owner Maria Nenadovich for her support of the sales. She said she also appreciated the support of longtime Beach resident Gene Domagala, who
often brings her a coffee and a bagel when she is at the book sale booth. She said she was shocked when told she had been named 2019 Beach Citizen of the Year, as she was not doing the volunteering and fundraising to earn personal accolades. “I was watching Coronation Street when I got the call, and I was speechless… just shocked,” said Tsorlinis.
“I consider it such an honour given so many of the wonderful people who have already been given it in the past.” First presented in 2003, the Beach Citizen of the Year Award was founded by Community Centre 55, the Beaches Lions and Beach Metro News. A DOUBLE celebration took place recently at Fairmount Park to officially celebrate the opening of the new playground and the arrival of a pizza oven. Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford was on hand for the celebration which featured a ribbon cutting at the site of the playground at the northeast end of the park, which is located behind Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School, in the Gerrard Street East and Bowmore Road area. “This park is a real centre

of the community, and the playground was one of the things identified by young people as a need during community consultations in 2018,” said Bradford at the Sept. 3 celebration. He credited former Beaches-East York Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon with getting the work done to have the new playground created. “Councillor McMahon did all the heavy lifting on this one,” said Bradford, who was elected councillor in October of 2018. Approximately $70,000 of
city funding was put into the equipment and landscaping for the playground, and those funds come from Section 42 money (which is funding from developers dedicated specifically to parks and parkland in the city). The playground celebration saw scores of children playing as it also marked dismissal time for the first day of school at Bowmore. Bradford said the pizza oven is also a great addition to Fairmount Park. The oven set up in the southwest corner of the park is the one that used to be in
Christie Pits, and Fairmount is one of only three Toronto parks to have one. “It was a huge community effort to get it here from Christie Pits. The residents and the Icemasters (community members who build outdoor ice rinks at Fairmount Park every winter) took the lead, and it’s going to be great getting pizza made in this oven.” The oven is still not officially open as it has to get a few safety permissions before it can be fired up and park users can start making their own pizza in it.

itive emotion and can make such a difference in a person’s day. Also, look people in the eye and acknowledge them when you are talking to them.” While Belyea works hard to keep everybody happy at his intersection and in the surrounding area, he said that as traffic increases and people’s live get more busy so do our streets get more dangerous. On Sept. 3 morning, Belyea was at a road safety event at Oakridge Public School in Scarborough that included Mayor John Tory, and he said the message of looking out for others was an important one especially as it pertains to drivers. “The mayor said slow down, plan ahead and stop looking at your phones,” said Belyea. “We all have this in our own power to make the roads safer. There used to be a social contract and everyone was paying attention and caring for others. That does not seem to happen as much now.” He said intersections with crossing guards have lower numbers of accidents because they do indeed force people to pay more attention and to slow down. “We have to be present, be aware and be the eyes and ears,” Belyea said of crossing guards and their key role in both road and community safety.

EVERYBODY WAS happy to see crossing guard Paul Belyea back at his post at Queen Street East and Elmer Avenue on the first day of school – the students, the parents, local seniors, neighbourhood business owners, drivers, and even the dogs. Belyea had worked the intersection as the crossing guard for Kew Beach Junior Public School from 2015 to February of this year, at which time he was transferred to become a crossing guard trainer and to work a different intersection in the west end of the city. However, he was back at lunch time on Tuesday, Sept. 3, working his familiar intersection and it was a literal parade of people stopping in surprise, smiling and then welcoming him back. “He gets on great with all the parents and the kids. Everybody knows him,” said Wally Stelmach, who along with his wife Gail, was happy to see Belyea back. “He talks to everyone and he knows all the kids,” said Gail. “He’s not a robot like some people; he’s involved and friendly. It’s nice to have someone out there who knows everybody.” Along with being a much loved crossing guard at Queen and Elmer, Belyea is also now director of training
for Carraway Safety, one of the two companies that have taken over running crossing guard services for the City of Toronto. The crossing guard program had previously been run by the Toronto Police Service. Belyea said working the intersection is literally like going home for him as he grew up on Kippendavie Avenue and attended Kew Beach Public School. “This is a great day to be back,” he said as drivers passing by slowed down, honked and waved to him. “I had wanted to get back here from the time I left, and thought why not go home.” And while it was all smiles and high fives during the lunch hour on Tuesday, Belyea took time to say that there are many important aspects to the job of crossing guard that perhaps not everyone realizes. “We call it being crossing safety ambassadors, and that means we are a part of the community,’ he said. Belyea gets to know the names of the students, the parents and their pets. “Always carry dog treats,” he said of his popularity with the neighbourhood’s dogs, a number of which he greeted by name on Tuesday. As part of his training sessions, he emphasized the importance of being friendly. “Start with a smile. It’s a pos-

YVONNE WALMSLEY is being remembered not only for her dedication to the Beach community and the physical fitness of its residents, but also for her genuine interest in the wellbeing of others. Walmsley died at the age of 91 at her Brookmount Road home on July 27 of this year. “So many people were at her memorial at Calvary Baptist Church,” said her daughter Denise Matthews in a recent interview with Beach Metro News. “So many people knew her because she would say hi to everyone and that was why she had so many friends.” For years, Walmsley played a key role in support-

She felt people should enjoy exercising and not have disgruntled looks on their faces while they were doing it,” said Matthews. She added that while her mother supported the Beaches Recreation Centre by collecting donations and working on the Spring Sprint, the centre also provided an important part of her mother’s own social life. “She would walk to the recreation centre no matter

She spoke to everybody and she was always so nice and asking how you were,” he remembered. In 2007, Walmsley was nominated as Beach Woman of Distinction for her work with the Beaches Recreation Centre. In a 2014 Beach Metro News story by Andrew Hudson, Walmsley talked a bit about her involvement with the Beach Recreation Centre, and the Spring Sprint and how proud she was to take part in it and to see it grow from a small event in the 1980s to one which now attracts hundreds of runners. She also acknowledged that she did indeed enjoy talking to people. “When my class is over, they laugh at me because I sometimes see people on the street coming and going and they say, ‘Yvonne, you’re still here!” she said in the 2014 interview. “I’m not in any hurry. I always take my time because I talk to everybody.” Walmsley said in the story that a positive attitude was key to good health and happiness. “I like to smile, I like to laugh,” she said.

In My Opinion
Council doubling down on making local streets safer Brad Bradford Beaches-East York Councillor
B
ack to school brings mixed emotions. At the beginning of a new Toronto Council year, I’m thinking about my priorities for the year ahead. Road safety is top of mind for me, as I know it is for many members of our Beaches-East York community. Council had a good year last year, unanimously approving Vision Zero 2.0, doubling down on our commitment to make Toronto streets safer.
We accomplished a lot locally and city-wide with the 880 Streets Danforth project in late August Canada’s first Vision Zero pop-up showing show how a complete street looks and feels. One of the best parts of being a city councillor is being able to create real, tangible change in your community. Despite divided opinions on our city-wide efforts, we’ve put a lot of energy into supporting local road safety projects, and will keep doing the same this year. Our Beaches-East York community showed its passion for making community-led change in the first half of 2019. Through the advocacy of local
residents and hard work of city staff we passed nearly 20 local road-safety measures at Community Council in addition to the dozens of safety projects that are part of the regular work program. These include all-way stops in several locations around Glebemount Avenue and Virginia Avenue. You can see the full list online bradbradford.ca/road-safety-progressupdate/. On the first day of school I was at the launch of a new contraflow bike lane at Norway Public School. We’re making the street safer with more pick-up and drop-off spaces, slowing down traffic outside the school, and integrating the cycling network.
As I settle in as a new city councillor, our office is getting a handle on the volume and we’re helping our residents deliver the safety initiatives they care about as local experts in their neighbourhoods. Thanks everyone for your patience as we get the many requests moving. If you’re interested in bringing road safety measures to your street, please get in touch with my office. There are lots of ways you can help take a lead from requesting a mobile watch your speed sign to starting a petition for traffic controls like speed humps and stop signs. You can find more information at bradbradford.ca. I’m committed to working with
any resident wanting to make their street safer. Sometimes it takes longer than we want, sometimes we can’t agree on the solution, but there’s always a path forward. I’m going back to school with new energy to work even harder on road safety, and the many other issues that matter to my community, and our city. Until we get road deaths down to zero, we can’t stop pushing. As you get back at it this month, remember it’s always more frantic out there than you expect. Whether you’re driving, biking, walking, or rolling, remember to look out for each other. Wishing everyone a good back to school.

Letters to the Editor
Tunnels can be built under water Re: ‘Water a key factor against a Queen subway’, Letters, Sept. 3. WATER HAS never been a factor in the construction and I can tell you that with authority as a senior professional engineer. Please do not make excuses for our councillors. They regularly ignore and even go 180 degrees to what professional engineers recommend. You can check the newspapers of the day and this is verbatim from archives of the Toronto Telegram. It is a fact that there was a powerful but uninformed lobby group called The Streetcars for Toronto Committee who lobbied the TTC and City Council in November of 1972. I was 30 at the time and I will never forget it. Some of them have still not seen the light and the fact is that streetcars cannot function efficiently in mixed traffic. I have personally sat
in meetings when TTC engineers tried in vain to explain this to councillors. The councillors say, “you have five minutes to speak” and then walk out to the toilet or a smoke break. The underground streetcar tunnel to the ferry docks at Queen’s Quay does not flood. Engineers have been building tunnels under water for more than a hundred years. The Thames Tunnel in London England was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1843. Every subway system in the world has tunnels running underwater. And don’t forget the Chunnel under the English Channel. If there was any water involved on Queen Street it was water on the brains of the councillors. The Queen Subway, which is now called an Emergency Relief Line, was stopped for political, not en-
gineering, reasons 47 years ago. It was just bull-headed ignorance. This is why we must have more control over this irresponsible group to prevent more sabotage of our city. Yes, Union Subway did flood twice during the latest renovations and it was from a broken sewer pipe and then a broken water main. It was not from ground water. The Queen Subway will now be built as part of the new Ontario Line which will run partly along Queen from Ontario Place to the Ontario Science Centre. This will be done by taking the subways away from city council. If you are interested in ground water, please watch what happens with the Eglinton Crosstown LRT and its level crossings.

Danforth bike lanes would help businesses Re: ‘Bike lane project study considered for Danforth Ave.’, News, Sept. 3. IF YOU have to cycle somewhere that’s further along the Danforth, I take a convoluted zig-zag route through all the back streets to avoid riding on Danforth Avenue. This means bypassing all those shops that need my business. But if there was a designated bike lane on Danforth Avenue, I would use it
regularly, and I would be patronizing those establishments along the way. It’s such a breeze to do errands by bicycle because you can easily stop and start without the fuss of searching for parking spots and fuming over parking tickets. Even cyclists commuting to work along the Danforth would find it convenient to stop enroute and do business with local merchants. Cameron Tingley
Replace the ‘monster’ streetcars I AGREE with the letters by M. Mullins and Louis Morrissette in the Aug. 20 edition regarding streetcars in the Beach. As a longtime resident, I’ve witnessed traffic congestion become worse and worse. The “monster”
streetcars block side streets so cars can’t turn, and they are next to impossible to pass. They should be replaced in this area with the old, faster moving ones. G. Lund

LAST WEDNESDAY was an emotional day on Kingston Road as the Randall’s Stationery era came to an end with the taking down of the iconic sign in front of the store. Founded in 1934 by the Randall family, the store has been operated since 2003 by JinWoo Lee and HaeKyung Shin who bought it from the family at that time. The couple, originally from Korea, sold the store earlier this year and their last day of business was Sept. 10. They finished their closing sale and invited the community in for tea and cookies, receiving well wishes from their many customers and friends from area businesses. The couple, who also lived above the store and raised their children in the community, are retiring. Over the years, they have maintained a close relationship with members of the Randall family, and it was agreed that the family could remove the iconic sign from the store once it was closed. And that sign removal took place shortly after 6 p.m. on Sept. 11. Four generations of the Randall family were on hand for the sign removal, and many passersby stopped to watch, wish them well and take photos. “It’s tough,” admitted Doug

Don, also one of Ted’s nephews, and Karen Simms, Ted’s niece, joked that along with Ted’s son Jeff they were known as TL (Ted Labour) in their family. And what will happen to the sign that has been the part of so many local residents lives over the years? It will be mounted and displayed on the bunkhouse at Don’s cottage in Haliburton, where family members often gather and now will remember the era of Randall’s Stationery.

Some local tips for success From picnic bag to lunch bag Mary Fran McQuade Mary Fran McQuade is a local writer specializing in gardening and lifestyle
FLOWERS AND food are the stars of today’s gardens. But we tree-huggers, who cherish the peace and privacy our trees give us, have to find other things to fill our shaded spaces. Beachers Ursula and Doug Eley have found the way to make the most of a shady garden. They’ve deliberately created a cool, shaded retreat where people, birds, bugs and wildlife are welcome. Following nature’s path They didn’t exactly intend that right from the start – you could say that the plants themselves led them in that direction. What was once a patch of giant weeds in a typical long, narrow backyard on a street north of Kingston Road is now a mini-forest of exquisite shade plants. The pair didn’t follow the usual route of drawing things out on paper first. Their choices have followed nature’s own plan for woods and forests: A topmost “canopy” layer of tall trees, an “understory” layer of small trees and shrubs, and a “forest floor” layer of short plants and spreaders. It’s a brilliant idea anyone can use to deal with fairly dense shade. Growing your own forest “We started by mainly getting basic plants,” says Doug. One of the first was a dawn redwood that still anchors the back corner of the
garden. Now a giant tree, it was only about a couple of metres when they brought it home, but “we didn’t know any better,” Ursula laughs. Other canopy trees came and grew up, too – a lush green beech tree and a red Bloodgood Japanese maple. Over time, the forest grew, and the lawn shrank away to nothing. “Every year, you do a little editing,” Doug explains. “Something dies or you need a spot of colour somewhere. Then, as you go on, you notice that there are all kinds of other things, all of these weird and wonderful, amazing plants to try.” Understory favourites In the understory, roughly at eye level, 20 or more Japanese maples are spaced throughout the width and depth of the garden. “We choose them for their small size, their different colours and foliage, and their form.” Just a few examples: • Inaba Shidare, a weeping form with deeply-cut burgundy leaves. • Green Waterfall, a tall, fairly narrow tree with arching branches. • Autumn Morn, with small green leaves daintily edged and tipped year-round with gentle red-orange. • Kagiri Nishiki, with a slender, airy form and small, pale leaves. • Mizuho Beni, a tiny filler next to the central path. Down to earth At ground level, ferns spring up in clumps among countless hostas. Variations in size, colour and foliage
dominate. Feathery ferns wave here and there; in other areas, stiffer, metallic Japanese painted ferns sprout in clusters. And what can you say about the hostas? Coloured blue-green or splashed with yellow or white, with big leaves or tiny leaves like the impossibly cute Dancing Mouse – they carpet the forest floor. Midsize green things also literally pop up above the green carpet. Several varieties of Solomon’s Seal, many with variegated leaves, arch over their smaller neighbours. Trilliums, of course, glow white in the spring. And an unusual shrub-form clematis heracleifolia brings its blue flowers out in a small splash of sun. Tips for success Here are some of Ursula’s and Doug’s tips for success. First, says Ursula, “You need an appreciation for plants, and then they grow on you.” Pay attention to plant tags, she adds. They have useful info on height, width, water and light needs. Their fairly mature shade garden doesn’t take a huge amount of work, they say. Leave the leaves on the garden in fall. (They don’t have tough oak leaves to deal with). In spring, do a light leaf clean-up, hand-weed, and spread compost and worm castings before young plants come up. Hit end-of-season sales for bargain plants, even if they’re not in top condition. Give them a little TLC, and they’ll survive.

A WHOLE summer of picnics: at the beach, at the campsite, on road trips and now – now summer is over. It’s back to routine and the lunch bag. However, let the inspiration of the summer picnic linger for the weekday lunch and extend your summer as long as possible. Here are some sunshine pleasers to enjoy during the transition period of early autumn. Lake Ontario Grain and Mint Salad This salad was consumed with pleasure during a sailing trip on a blue sky day in July. You can easily bulk up the recipe to accompany a barbecue for dinner with ample leftovers for lunch the next day. Leftovers are always an asset! Although this salad was made with quinoa and cracked wheat you could easily substitute cooked rice, or couscous. Other herbs such as basil or coriander could be substituted for mint. 1 cup (250 mL) quinoa (cook according to package directions) 1 cup (250 mL) cracked wheat (bulghur), cook according to package directions 3 cups (750 mL chopped fresh tomato, or mixture of tomato, cucumber and chopped red pepper
1 cup (250 mL) finely chopped fresh parsley, preferably flat leaf Italian parsley 1/2 - 1 cup (125 mL) finely chopped fresh green onions, or sweet onions such as Vidalia (quantity depends on hotness of the onion) 1/4 cup (50 mL) fresh chopped mint 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt Dressing: 1/3 cup (75 mL) fresh lemon juice 1/3 cup (75 mL) extra virgin olive oil 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/4 tsp (1 mL) fresh black pepper Cook the grains according to package directions and cool thoroughly. Make sure all moisture has been absorbed by the grain. If chosen grain is wet, spoon onto clean tea towel and squeeze dry. In a large mixing bowl, combine chosen grains with finely chopped tomato, cucumber and sweet peppers. Again, you can use one vegetable or combination for colour and variety of tastes. Add parsley, onion (to taste), mint and salt. Stir gently to combine. In separate bowl, whisk together lemon juice, oil, salt and pepper. Pour over salad and combine thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate. May be made a day ahead. Makes about 8 cups (2 L) – 8 servings. Serve salad on a bed of lettuce torn into bite-sized pieces and place in a plastic container for the lunch bag with an ice pack.
Travelling Gazpacho This chilled soup is like a liquid salad. It needs only a crusty roll and piece of cheese to make a complete lunch. For best flavour, prepare a day ahead of serving. 2 cups (500 mL) strained tomatoes (available in glass jars or use a 28 oz/ 796 mL can of diced tomatoes and puree in blender 2 cups (500 mL) tomato vegetable cocktail 1 cup (250 mL) finely chopped English cucumber with skin on 3/4 cup (175 mL) chopped yellow, orange, red or green pepper 1/4 cup (50 mL) finely chopped onion 1 clove garlic, minced 3 tbsp (45 mL) extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp (25 mL) fresh lemon juice 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/4 tsp (1 ml) fresh black pepper Hot pepper sauce (optional) Garnish: toast croutons In a mixing bowl, stir together strained tomatoes, tomato vegetable cocktail, yellow pepper, onion, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Taste and add more salt, pepper or hot pepper sauce if required. Pour into plastic jar and refrigerate. Keep refrigerated until ready to put in lunch bag with ice pack. Pack a plastic cup and pour soup into cup to serve. Will keep covered and refrigerated for 2 to 3 days. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

I
f Shakespeare were around today he might write (or perchance tweet) that “one woman in her time plays many parts. Her acts being seven ages.” Beach resident Amy Jo Johnson has been gymnast, actor, singer, songwriter, writer, director and mother. She is “thrilled” that her second feature film as a director, Tammy’s Always Dying, played its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. You may remember Johnson as the Pink Power Ranger or the friend Julie on Felicity or the strong policewoman on the Canadian TV series Flashpoint which brought her to Toronto. If you happen to see her walking on Queen Street East (as I have), she’s a busy Beach mom. As her Facebook says, “I’m an artist by nature and a mother at heart.” As part of TIFF, Amy Jo Johnson spoke to enthusiastic fans at the OLG Dream Deck at Bell Lightbox: “Since I was seven years old I just wanted to perform.” She was born in Cape Cod, Mass. and left for the bright lights of New York City as a teenager. Johnson found fame acting on popular television shows, but felt, “I liked it, but never loved it. I love directing ...I get to use every part of my personality.” In 2005, turning 35 and living in Los Angeles, she “hated acting”, becoming

Beach resident Amy Jo Johnson. “a very insecure actress. I needed to get out of L.A. because I was constantly comparing myself to everybody around me and that’s just a terrible way to live”. On a “whim” she packed up her life and moved to Montreal. She came to Toronto in 2008 after landing her role in Flashpoint and “fell in love with acting and the entertainment industry again”. She also “found a city that I love, such a generous city and country for filmmakers”. In 2015 she became “a proud Canadian citizen”. “I love being a filmmaker in this town.” Amy Jo Johnson
What she really wanted to do was write and direct. In 2017 Johnson completed the Director’s Lab at the Canadian Film Centre which was founded in 1988 by the legendary filmmaker from the Beach, Norman Jewison. The talented directors of his generation had to leave Canada to fulfill their dreams. Now Toronto is attracting artists from around the world. Amy Jo Johnson’s new film, Tammy’s Always Dying, was written by Joanne Sarazen and stars Felicity Huffman as an alcoholic mother in a toxic relationship with her long-suffering daughter played by Toronto’s own Anastasia Phillips (Bomb Girls). The stellar cast includes Clark Johnson, Aaron Ashmore, Kristian Bruun, Jessica Greco and Lauren Holly (Jim Carrey’s dream girl in Dumb and Dumber). Every family has its own humorous and sad stories to tell. Johnson revealed that her father is a “non-functioning alcoholic, but he’s still absurdly funny”. For her third feature, Crazier than You, she wants to play her mother in a film she is writing about a woman’s spiritual journey through love, motherhood, cancer and a religious cult. It’s based on her late mother’s 12 years in a cult. As the Bard would say, “all the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players”. We each have our own new acts to live through and learn what it means to be human.

I
have lived in the east end for almost 20 years, including a couple of years on the Danforth, seven years in Leslieville and a decade in the Beach. I love the Beach for its proximity to the city and pleasures of lakeside living but also the small-town feel
and close-knit community. Eat, play, love My perfect day in the east end would literally be a walk in the park(s). I’d start by taking the waterfront trail to the Kew Gardens Tennis Club (77 Kew Beach Ave.). It’s where my husband and I enjoyed one of our first dates and it’s always a great time. The cool lake breeze that

You can’t go wrong with their omelet, eggs benny, or wild mushroom salad – nutritious and delicious. And since it’s a perfect day we’re also having a mimosa. Next it’s off to the palatial RC Harris Water Treatment Plant (2701 Queen St. E.). Our golden doodle loves the off-leash areas by the waterfront, and I love the architecture of this beautiful building with its cinematic views at the top of the hill. For lunch, I like to say “yes” to No Bull Burgers (1019 Kingston Rd). While my family enjoys the cheeseburgers, I prefer the quinoa option. However, we can all agree on the flavourful poutine and amazing milk-

shakes. To do and to buy Depending on the time of year, we’ll sink our toes in the sand at beach volleyball, play shinny at Ted Reeve Arena (175 Main St.) or I’ll challenge myself to a boot camp class with the bodacious Claire Boxall at Bob Acton Park (45 William Hancox Ave.) Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the parades, street parties, art shows and the jazz fests that make our neighbourhood so unique and enjoyable throughout the year. When it comes to shopping, nothing’s better than a bouquet from Flower Centre (1012 Kingston Rd.) with its beautiful selection of quality florals and plants, and artistic arrangements at reasonable prices. The Sweetest Things Gift Shop (959 Kingston Rd.) features fair trade treasures and a variety of classic treats while Trinity Gallery (920 Kingston Rd.) often has something fashionable and fun. A manicure and pedicure from Glitter Spa (942 Kingston Rd.) leaves me feeling pampered from head to toe. And when it comes to cool finds for the kids, I’m consistently impressed with the merchandise at Pro League Sports Collectibles (1957 Queen St. E.). Dinner and drinks For dinner, we’re spoiled with the selection on Queen Street East and Kingston Road. But if it’s patio weather we’re a hop, skip and a jump from The Loop (971 Kingston Rd.), where I’m inclined to order one of their Mediterranean inspired dishes and a glass of sangria. If we’re taking out, we go for the delicious lasagna and antipasto from Tony and Claudia’s Fallingbrook Market & Café (158 Fallingbrook Rd.) or the artisanal fare and freshly baked goodies from Courage Foods (946 Kingston Rd.). For drinks, my favourite pub is the Green Dragon (1032 Kingston Rd.). It’s a cozy and welcoming watering hole where we’ve had so many fantastic times with family and friends. The perfect ending to a perfect day.

This twilight shot of the pool house and pool at 12 Fallingbrook Drive is lovely, but it takes a drone to capture a 241 by 150 foot lot. The magnificent interior of this home on a spectacular lot needs a viewing at chaputliving.com to do it justice.
