Beachers celebrate Oleksiak’s triumph By Anna Killen

ALREADY KNOWN to many in the Beach, 16-year-old swimmer Penny Oleksiak is now a household name across Canada. The four-time Olympic medalist captivated the nation at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio this month, becoming Canada’s youngest Olympic champion with a gold medal in the 100-metre freestyle, silver in the 100-metre butterfly, and two bronzes in the women’s freestyle relays (4 x 100 metre and 4 x 200 metre). The first Olympic champion to be born in the aughts, Oleksiak shattered Canadian records – she brings home the most medals ever won by a Canadian at a summer games – and set Olympic records, all the while handling the influx of media attention her newfound status entails with grace and humour. To cap off an incredible 16 days, on Sunday, Oleksiak carried Canada’s flag in the closing ceremonies. She was an early favourite for flag bearer and delayed her departure from Rio once many began speculating that she deserved to lead Canada’s entrance. Oleksiak began swimming when she was nine and broke onto the world stage with a compelling performance at last year’s World Juniors. Now, her coaches and fans believe she could be Canada’s most successful Summer Olympic athlete of all time. “Why can’t Penny be the most medal-winning athlete in the history of Canada?” asked her coach Ben Titley during a media availability in Rio on August 14. Speaking on her future, Oleksiak remained grounded, insisting that her life would not change too much. “I just see it as that I need to love what I do. Right now I really love swimming and it’s something I want to continue doing. As long as I have a love for the sport I’m going to keep progress-

ing, I hope,” she said. “I just want to be able to keep getting better. Whatever happens, happens.” She said she did not think that life would be much different when she got back to Canada, adding that she was enjoying the notes of congratulations from friends, family and strangers. Beachers celebrated the Monarch Park Collegiate student’s triumphs with enthusiastic viewing parties, excited posts on social media and chats in coffee shops, and talk of a parade to welcome her home. “As Canadians, we’re proud of all of our athletes. But here in the Beaches, it was particularly special for us to cheer for Penny and to watch all of her success,” said Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who noted that he had left a message for her parents and would be presenting her with an official certificate of congratulations upon her return. DESPITE SPENDING 30 years kayaking Lake Ontario, Cath Hastie says she hasn’t seen that many accidents on the water. “There aren’t that many that come up. I have seen three people thrown out of their boats by the waves – literally the wave will hit the bottom and they’ll pop out. I have seen one canoe with two people in it be thrown about my height into the air, just because of the waves … that’s Lake Ontario,” said Hastie, noting that most often when she has seen a boater fall out of his or her craft, the incident has happened close to shore. But earlier this month, Hastie witnessed the lengthy rescue of a kite surfer whose kite became tangled after entering the water about 300 metres offshore of the Balmy Beach Club. Two Beachers – one an 80-year-old paddler – proceeded to haul the kite surfer and his kite back to shore from where he was stuck. “I got to the beach 7-ish (in the evening) and the canopy of the kite surfer had already ditched and he was already in trouble,” she said, noting the paddlers were already in the water helping him. “You could just see basic little shapes it was so far away.” The rescue took well over an hour, she said, and left the 80-year-old paddler – who wishes to remain anonymous – exhausted after towing the kite boarder to shore behind his kayak. “He took his required float line and he tethered the guy and his surf board to that, and he paddled them in,” he said. She said the paddler noted when he got to shore that if this had happened at the be-

ginning of the season – before he was conditioned from paddling every day – he might not have been able to pull it off. The second good Samaritan worked with him, carrying in the surfer once they got to shore, as well as the heavy, water-laden kite, brought in using his canoe. “The waves were not calm at all,” said Hastie. “It almost didn’t have a happy, wonderful ending.” Of the 80-year-old paddler who led the charge to help the kite surfer, Hastie said “he’s the kind of guy you want out there. He’s aware of his surroundings, and when he sees someone in trouble, he knows the law of the sea – you’d better get in there and help.” She said the incident is a reminder that “we’ve just got to help each other” and that it is important to be aware of the people around you. Speaking for the paddler, Hastie said she believes one thing that could be done to help make that area of the beach more safe would be to have a full-time Harbour Rescue Boat stationed near the club. She said that even if the station was not manned at all times, a locked boat that the Toronto Marine Unit could access by road would be preferable to the status quo. The main marine unit is stationed near the Harbourfront on Queens Quay West at the bottom of Rees, with sub-stations at Bluffer’s Park, Centre Island, and Humber River. The Toronto Police Marine Unit was not able to provide full comment by press deadline but a spokesperson said that they did not receive any calls for this occurance. Toronto laneways home to hidden potential By Anna Killen

WHAT COULD Toronto’s laneways look like in 2035? That was the question posed to Danforth East residents by three recent OCADU graduates keen on exploring under-utilized urban space and the hidden potential of laneways. East End residents – and other curious minds – will see the answer this weekend when the Toronto Laneway Crawl, a series of pop-up festivals focused on transforming Toronto laneways, hits the Danforth. OCADU Strategic Foresight and Innovation graduates Eman El-Fayomi, Jennifer McDougall and Mike Stulberg are the team behind Laneway Futures T.O., a project that will see a life-sized mock-up of a possible future Toronto laneway August 28 near Danforth and Woodbine. “I’ve been interested in laneways forever,” said Stulberg. “Tons and tons of under-utilized space in a city with a growing population and naturally growing need for space for recreational purposes and green spaces.” The project, which began as a grant proposal last year when the three were still in school, is informed with insight from two sessions where the team asked participants to envision what laneways could look like in the future – the first a broad brainstorming session in Graffiti Alley downtown and the second a more tactile experience in the Danforth East laneway where the final installation will be mounted. “We realized that this is a huge opportunity for civic engagement, in that it is a public space issue and the public space offers an excellent opportunity to host that conversation,” he said. The responses from the public varied from

PHOTO: SUBMITTED

Earlier this year, in a session at a laneway near Danforth and Woodbine, community members envisioned what the laneway could look like in 20 years. “blue-sky, super optimistic” ideas – one child suggested a slip-and-slide – to solutions for “concrete, on-the-ground problems that people face.” While creating the design, the team tried to keep the design positive and plausible so as to best reflect what they heard from the community. The end result is a life-sized prototype of a future laneway scenario. People can walk through and interact with the installation to experience what it would be like in real life. “A lot of what you see with planning proposals is really abstract. At best you see drawings and you’re left to imagine what that would be like. That’s what the public is expected to get behind – a 2D, 3D drawing

from a single perspective. Drawing is great but it’s totally different when you’re walking through a space in reality,” he said. The project got a boost when it teamed up with Michelle Senayah with the Laneway Project, the host of the Laneway Crawl. “It’s essentially a series of block parties in laneways,” said Stulberg. “It’s a perfect fit.” Stulberg said the Laneway Project helped with the logistics of meeting with various neighbourhood groups on the ground. The Danforth East neighbourhood boasts particularly engaged groups and associations, he said, noting that the neighbourhood was picked for the installation because it is a neighbourhood in transition. “It’s not changing super fast, but it’s on the

horizon,” he said. “To us that’s an interesting opportunity because people are already thinking about the neighbourhood dynamic.” And what can visitors expect to see at the event? Aside from saying that the installation will have a local and city-wide focus, considering not only the Danforth East laneway but how it is linked to the larger city, Stulberg plays coy. “I don’t know if I totally want to give it away yet…,” he said. All the more reason to see the installation in person this Sunday, August 28 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The location is the east-west laneway just north of Danforth Ave., between Woodbine Ave. and Woodmount Ave.

Olympic parade in the works Continued from Page 1 “I wish her many more Olympic medals, and Drake tickets,” he said. Oh, that’s right – Oleksiak’s other big story of the games? A shout-out and messages from Toronto icon and hip-hop sensation Drake, alluding that he will see her at one of his upcoming shows. Beach officials are working on hosting a parade to celebrate Oleksiak and the neighbourhood’s other Olympic athletes – beach volleyball player Kristina Valjas, beach volleyball coach, Steve Anderson, swimmer Javier Acevedo, kayakers and canoers like Genevieve Orton and KC Fraser from the Balmy Beach Club – on August 28. While the parade was not officially confirmed by press deadline, a permit has been placed with the city. Visit beachmetro.com for more details as they become available.

What they said Many took to Twitter, Facebook, and other channels to wish Oleksiak well. Here’s what area politicians had to say:

“We are so proud of our very own Olympic medalist, Penny Oleksiak! Penny has grown up in the Beach and attends Monarch Park Collegiate. Watching Penny win FOUR medals in Rio has been such a thrill for Canadians across the country and she has so much community support. Congratulations, Penny!” – Ward 32 Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon “I am thrilled to congratulate Penny Oleksiak on her outstanding success in Rio. Beaches-East York and all of Ontario and Canada are so proud of her crawling her way to a gold in the 100 meter freestyle, and with her teammates, two bronzes in the 100 and 200 meter relay events. She then went over the top in securing a silver in the 100 meter butterfly. Congratulations to all of Team Canada and our own Penny Oleksiak.” – Beaches-East York MPP Arthur Potts “Beyond proud of TO’s @OleksiakPenny for being chosen as #CAN flag-bearer at #Rio2016. Looking forward to see what your future has in store.” – Toronto Mayor John Tory

THE BEACH has lost one of its brightest artistic stars. Jennifer Cline, known as much for her technically proficient watercolours as her omnipresence on Queen Street with her fiery red hair and trusty bicycle, passed away peacefully on July 27 after a six-month battle with brain cancer. Cline is well-known to long-time Beach residents, artists and art lovers, having painted her much-beloved neighbourhood for decades. She was a founding member of the Beach Guild of Fine Art, alongside Wynona Gallop, Shirley Jones, Mary Cserepy, the late William Taylor, Carolyn Pack, and Janice Gibbins. Both solo and with the Guild, Cline exhibited her work in numerous galleries, including many shows at the Beacher Café and 15 years as part of the Beach Studio Tour. Valerie Cline, Jennifer’s niece, said her aunt symbolized the neighbourhood she loved and lived in for more than three decades. “From my perspective, she pretty much was the Beach for me,” said Valerie. “I was always amazed at how many people she would say hello to, and how many people she knew.”

Jennifer treasured the trees, parks, architecture and character of the Beach, said Valerie. “I know she really passionately wanted to preserve that,” she said. “The Jazz festival, the shops, the markets, the people – she was just so passionate about all of it, and connected to all of it … In many ways she was sort of a documentarian.” Cline painted many of the shops along Queen Street over almost 40 years, building a legacy of images of that very character she treasured, and her art has in many cases outlasted the businesses she painted. Along with Queen Street and the Jazz Festival, her floral and historical paintings are equally treasured records of the past. She has been commissioned to commemorate significant anniversaries at the Balmy Beach Club and Community Centre 55, and was generous with contributing her work to local causes. Cline trained at the Ontario College of Art on a scholarship from the Eagle Pencil Company, one of only two ever given out. She worked as a commercial artist for companies such as the Cockfield Brown Agency, Eaton’s and The Bay, where she honed the technical proficiency some might not even know she had. Valerie said sorting through her aunt’s old work, some dating from as far back as her high school years, was something of a revelation, revealing a mastery of everything from catalogue and fashion work to architectural drawing and even caricatures. “Her ability to naturally capture perspective and proportion just blew me away,” said Valerie, and her caricatures were “as good as the best newspaper

political caricatures that you see today.” When Cline gave up commercial work for fine art, business became something of a lower priority, and she often donated her time and talents, said Valerie. “Her priority was purpose and passion,” she said. “She really did have a great heart when it came to helping a cause.” The Beach was not just Jennifer’s home, it was also her muse, said Valerie. In a 2014 interview with Beach Metro News marking the Guild’s 20th anniversary, Jennifer stated as much. After discussing all the spots she’s painted around the world – Greece, England, Colombia, France – she said she still always returns to her favourite place to paint: home. “That expanse of sea and sky at the end of the street, where else do you get that in Toronto?” she asked. A private ceremony has taken place, but Valerie is hoping to organize a chance for Beachers to celebrate Jennifer’s life. Email her at valerie.cline@gmail.com to share condolences and to stay informed on memorial plans.

In My Opinion

So long and thanks for all the fish... er, memories Jon Muldoon Editor THE NEWSPAPER world is one that seems to be highly suited to those who tend to leave things to the last minute. That’s not to say that we’re unorganized, and I would argue that the flexibility engendered by this way of living is actually a strength in this business, even for those of us whose deadlines arrive only 23 times a year rather than daily. With that thought, I find myself, at almost literally the last minute, composing my farewell editorial. When I first arrived at Beach Metro News in late 1999 as a recent photojournalism graduate as the new reporter/photographer, things were

a bit different than they are today. We had no web presence to speak of. The entire office shared one email address (bmn@interlog.com, for those keeping score). Bill Suddick’s cartoons – which we’d been printing for less than 20 years at that point – were delivered on paper. Photos were taken on 35mm film cameras, and we still had a functioning darkroom. I also had less hair on my face and more on my head, though my fashion sense remains as hopeless today as it was then. The news industry as a whole was going strong. The Beach had several community newspapers, most of which have since been bought out or closed up shop. Beach Metro News had a waiting list for advertisers, since increasing our page count would have required the approval of all of our

amazing delivery volunteers. Some things have changed since those days. These days we’re online, we tweet, we post to Facebook, and everything happens digitally (although we still have a box of paste-up equipment hidden away in the basement). A surprising amount of work is done on phones. Other things haven’t changed, at least not completely. While Bill Suddick’s cartoons now arrive via email, his talent and sense of humour remain undiminished. We still exist to tell the community’s stories, to let our readers know what’s happening and why, to point out the good, the bad and the interesting. As with every print publication, the future is uncertain (though we’re certainly as strong as a community newspaper can reasonably expect to be in 2016). The business

is changing, and quickly, and despite some pundits’ claims to the contrary, I don’t think anyone really knows what the news business will look like in 10 years. One certainty, though, is that community newspapers are more important than ever. For those who tire of Facebook gossip, it’s reassuring to know there is a small but dedicated group of professionals whose job it is to find out the truth. So what I ask of our readers is to remember the value of what Beach Metro News does. It is a rare privilege to have such a dedicated staff of people providing news that you won’t find anywhere else, specifically about the area you’ve chosen to live in. It might not always be glamorous, but it’s a necessary and vital service for the health of a great community. And it’s been

an honour to take part in that service here for 15 years, despite – or perhaps in part because of – the occasional complaint, periodic nasty phone calls, the surprising amount of people who believe they best know how to run a newspaper, and the odd attempted coup. It’s been a blast. Try to be nice to each other and remember how lucky you are to live here – but not so much so that you forget to fight to make it better. Leash your dogs, or don’t. Just don’t hate each other over it. Be kind to your local underpaid newspaper staffers – they’re here because they love and believe in what they do. Trust me, it’s not for the money. In the words of the late Douglas Adams, “There was a point to this story, but it has temporarily escaped the chronicler’s mind.”

A message from one Olympic champion to another PENNY: TRUST in simply being you. Your world has no doubt changed in a blink of an eye. You will be pushed and pulled in many different directions. Boardwalk lease needs a second look RE: CARTER’S Landing franchise subleased at former Boardwalk Café: First a Tim Hortons franchise has opened in the former Boardwalk Café building this year. Now Tuggs Inc. has sublet their lease in the same building to Carter’s Landing, a restau-

rant chain owned by Cara Operations which owns over 1,000. Tuggs owner George Foulidis was given a 20-year lease in 2007, with no tender process, on the premise his family-owned operation would keep franchises from moving into the prime boardwalk location. Councillor McMahon has said publicly she is “exasperated” at this latest development. Local residents are exasperated. We need more than exasperation from our elected representative. Beach voters’ displeasure over how former Councillor Sandra Bussin advocated the original deal was largely responsible for her ouster and McMahon’s election in the first place. How many more liberties is Tuggs going to be allowed to take until the councillor takes action? McMahon has an opportunity here to actually be proactive and make a commitment regarding this issue, which clearly will not go away. Now is the time to stand up before council and demand the start of the process

of revoking Tuggs’ lease and a call for tenders for the location — which is what should have been done back in 2007. Advocating summer movie nights, skating parties and Winter Stations is fine but this is a serious issue that requires real leadership. Our councillor has a chance to right a wrong, or at least be seen to try. M. McHenry

Renovation not necessary at Kew Gardens IT IS with great sadness that I walk by my formerly lovely Kew Gardens Park and its beautiful flower beds. Replacing the flowers are cement blocks, extremely ugly, and serving no purpose whatsoever. Perhaps people will stop and talk/text on their smartphones if there are benches provided. I see no other reason people would

stop there. If the objective of this folly was to bring more people to Queen Street to shop, this makes no sense whatsoever. If the objective was to provide a space for Remembrance Day ceremonies, destroying the entrance to the park for one day a year is equally ridiculous. Few events are permitted in the park now, so what use will this open space be for? Dundas Square East? It is my understanding that Mary-Margaret McMahon, our city councillor, led the charge for this change. In the July 19 issue of Beach Metro News, she wrote an article on different ways to balance the budget through various tax increases. I don’t mind tax increases to pay for infrastructure, transit, or social housing. But not this! As Joni Mitchell sang, “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” Ruth Lerner

A 29-YEAR-OLD man was arrested and charged with numerous offences earlier this month following a months-long drug investigation in the Danforth and Greenwood area. At the time of the arrest, the man was in possession of a loaded semi-automatic firearm and a quantity of drugs. Between May and August of this year, officers from 54 Division’s crime unit investigated drug trafficking in the east end neighbourhood, according to a Toronto Police Service release August 7.

During this time, they observed a man dealing drugs in the area. On Friday, August 5 the man was arrested. Jamaal Williams faces numerous firearms and drug charges.

New Queen St. concert venue planned THE GREENWOOD Raceway site on Queen East might soon contain a new 2,700 capacity concert venue. Entertainment giant Live Nation is behind the application, currently under review by the city following a July 27 hearing. Planning consultants Bousfelds Inc. submitted the application for interior renovations to the city on behalf of the building’s owners, EMM Financial Corp. The site is currently home to the Alliance Cinema, the Champions Teletheatre offtrack betting facility, and System Fitness. The building was erected in the mid-1990s after the historic horse racing facility on site was demolished. The proposal details plans to renovate two-thirds of the teletheatre, located in the middle of the property, in order to host live performances. A new partial second floor would be constructed, and changes to the outside of the building would be minor “maintaining a consistent built form along Queen Street.” Plans show that the current off-track betting facility at the site, Champions Greenwood, will remain a tenant – albeit with a smaller floor space.

Everyone Has a Story to Tell

By Anna Killen

When was the little free library first erected at the dog park, and why did you decide to build one? The Little Free Library was installed in the Kew Beach Dog Park in June of 2014. My family had been part of a class action lawsuit after losing my grandmother to a bacterial infection she’d contracted in the hospital. Each grandchild received a cheque for $393. I wanted to do something special with my settlement money and decided to purchase the library from LittleFreeLibrary.org and place it in my dog’s favourite place: Kew Beach Dog Park. Can you tell me a bit about who the library is dedicated to? KR: The Library was dedicated to my grandmother Marion, and my dog Baker. Baker was my hero (and was alive at the time) and had fought and conquered a very aggressive form of bone cancer (osteosarcoma). He’d been through chemo and – lost a foreleg to the disease. I wanted to commemorate his heroism and life. He taught me so much about living, and I knew once he was gone, I’d need something or somewhere to honour him. He loved swimming at that park and I knew it was the perfect spot for a Little Free Library. Baker was euthanized in December of 2015. He was 13 years old, lived a full life, and his three arthritic legs just couldn’t support him anymore. He was in a stroller most of his time

News Briefs

Little free library honoured loved ones IF YOU’VE let your dog out at the Kew Beach Dog Park over the last several weeks, you might have noticed that the little free library at the western edge of the park is no more. As of last week, the only portion left of the free library – part of a worldwide movement focused on building special spots to share books – is its post, featuring a plaque that reads “For Marion and Baker”. But fear not, dear readers – Beach social media users were quick on the case of the destroyed library, posting suggestions about what might have happened to it (the general consensus: vandals used it for firewood) and what could be done to replace it. Before long, Katharine Reid, the woman who installed the library over two years ago jumped into the conversation, and plans have been launched for a fall fundraiser to raise money to purchase and install a new library. Beach Metro News spoke with Reid about the library’s history, her love for her dog, and the Beach community’s response and generosity.

IT’S ALL about pollinators at the Fairmount Park Farmers’ Market August 24. An observation beehive will be on site, and, for those interested in more than observing, a workshop on bee home building will run for the duration of the market. Later in the evening, the market will be screening ‘Bee Movie’. The Fairmount Park Farmers’ Market is at 1725 Gerrard St. East.

THE CANADIAN Bangladeshi Organization Network is hosting a Multicultural Festival in Dentonia Park on Saturday, August 27 from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. The Muticultural Mela will feature food, live music and dance performances, and activities for kids. The stage will be in the west end of the park, facing north east.

Above, Katharine Reid at the book drive and grand opening at the Kew Beach Dog Park Little Free Library opening in June, 2014. Below, what was left of the library on August 15. At bottom left is Reid’s dog, Baker. outside and could no longer swim. I knew it was time. He was a four-year cancer survivor and the disease never got him. Since his cancer diagnosis, I have become active in the Smiling Blue Skies Walk to End Canine Cancer. Who was involved in its building and maintenance, and can you tell me about the Toronto Beaches Dog Association (TBDA)? I got in touch with Ward 32 councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon to find out how to go about putting the library in the park, and she put me in touch with Stuart Slessor, the Parks Supervisor. They were very helpful and efficient, and once I got the go-ahead from Stuart, it was game on! I put a call out on Facebook for someone to help with installation of the library, and a local carpenter volunteered to install the library free of charge. We even had a grand opening/book drive Katharine Reid for the library when it went in. Since its installation, I have become the co-president of the Toronto Beaches Dog Association with my best friend Heidi Leigh. She and I placed the library under the association’s umbrella when we took the reins. For the first year-and-ahalf, I lived a block away and maintained it myself, but since moving a little further away, the TBDA has had a volunteer steward (Adrienne Kassen) checking on it weekly.

“The library was just a wooden box, not my beloved dog or grandmother”

A CLIMATE change town hall will be held Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Beach United Church at 140 Wineva Ave. Co-hosted by Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, MPP Arthur Potts, and Ward 32 councillor MaryMargaret McMahon, the event will “focus on how government, business, and individuals can all work together to tackle climate change.”

COMMUNITY CENTRE 55 hosts the 15th year of remembrance for the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016 at the Millennium Garden on the south east corner of Coxwell and Eastern at 1 p.m. The event honours the thousands of lives lost in the attack, including the medical service workers killed rescuing people from the Twin Towers and due to medical complications since.

In fact, she’s the one who informed me of its destruction. What did you think when you heard someone had taken it down? I was surprisingly calm when I found out the library had been destroyed. At first, I thought it had been stolen, but through information and photos on Facebook, it became clear the library had been smashed. If it had happened when Baker was still alive, I think I would’ve been devastated. Since losing him though, I have a very different perspective on what matters and what doesn’t. I can’t lose him twice. The library was just a wooden box, not my beloved dog or grandmother. When I made the decision to put it in the park, I knew the risks and accepted them. I refuse to live my life in fear of what vandals might do. It sounds like you’re confident the library can be replaced. What’s that process going to be like? It absolutely can and will be replaced. Many people have gotten in touch offering to help. The Toronto Beaches Dog Association is going to have a fundraiser on October 8 at 7 p.m. at St Louis in the Beach to get the funds to purchase and install a new library. Seeing the community disappointment and outrage at the library’s destruction has been eye opening. I really didn’t realize how much people appreciated it being there. The sense of community it has inspired is actually pretty incredible. A new library is definitely going to happen.

CURIOUS ABOUT the Beach’s giant oak trees? Arborist Todd Irvine hosts a walk through the neighbourhood, visiting some of the oldest trees in the city, on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. The walk starts at the north east entrance of Ivan Forrest Garden (131 Glen Manor Dr.) and ends at Queen Street East and Balsam Avenue. The walk will include some rough grounds and slopes, and is free but with a suggested $5 to $10 donation. “Dip into the lush Glen Stewart Ravine, a picturesque remnant of the original forest that once blanketed the area. Explore ways to protect trees from the pressures of development, like building a house on stilts to protect the roots of the surrounding oaks.”

THE BEACH Hill neighbourhood will be more colourful soon as work begins to install benches along the retail corridor between the Fairmount Park Community Centre and Devon Road. The project has been in the works for some time, and residents will notice this week the removal of old benches and the presence of city representatives and councillors assessing where the new benches should be placed. Following installation, the Beach Hill Neighbourhood Association is planning a party in October to celebrate.

PAUL NOVOTNY and Tom Reynolds will perform a Jazz Vespers service at Hope United Church on Saturday, August 27. The two musicians initially met through Toronto’s music community, but were surprised to realize they both lived on the same street near Woodbine and Danforth. Bassist Novotny has been nominated for several Junos and won one with his frequent musical collaborator Joe Sealy. He has performed with numerous big name jazz acts, including Junior Mance, Carol Welsman, Barbara Lica and Holly Cole. His work as a composer will be familiar to CBC viewers, with themes for the National News, The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos and CBC News Now to his credit. Pianist Reynolds grew up in Chicago and lived in Nashville performing with a number of well-known artists ranging from Glen Frey to Bela Fleck, and from Crystal Gale to Shania Twain. He worked as a music director with the Grammy-winning group Take Six and toured as music director for Engelbert Humperdinck, and has also taught religion and theology. The two will perform at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Hope United Church, 2550 Danforth Ave. at Main Street. A freewill offering will be collected. BCEC president Art Blomme especially expresses BCEC’s gratitude to the Toronto District School Board, and the staff, parents and students of Kew Beach Junior Public School have made possible this commitment to solar power. At its Annual General Meeting, BCEC heard from environmental activist and writer Bill Reno who pointed out that “public power starts with local energy cooperatives such as BCEC. hen I lived on Lee Avenue in the late seventies and eighties there was a unique piece of art on display in Kew Gardens. But this type of art in the park wasn’t of the usual wood carving, sculpture or painting variety. Back in the days when you could buy your socks and underwear at the local Woolworth and a gardener actually lived in the gardener’s cottage, there was a large carpetbed display located at the north side of Kew Gardens near Queen Street. It was a work of art when it was in its prime, and an attraction that caused more than a few tourists, locals and even the occasional streetcar rider to shout, “Wow, look at that!” So what the heck is a carpetbed and where did they come from? Simply put, they are mass plantings of low-growing or dwarf cultivars of santolina, althernanthera and sometimes varieties of succulents that are organized into complex geometric designs and patterns. Newer versions feature themes, lettering and pictures which are meticulously trimmed and cut to create the effect of a carpet woven with plants. Drawing designs with plants is not exactly new. The well-manicured gardening style of the Italian Renaissance and the expansive parterre de broderie backyard of the palace of Versailles were both inspired by the Islamic version of paradise found in the patterns of Persian carpets. But it was in 19th century England during the Victorian

PHOTOS: STEVEN CHADWICK

This carpetbed graced Edwards Gardens in 2014, stretching 33 feet wide. The Blue Jays logo, below, is featured this year. gardening frenzy that carpetbedding really reached the height of its popularity. Cities and towns throughout the country competed with each other to see who could create the most elaborate displays, and nothing was off limits. The parks were like a Disneyland for the Victorians and the carpetbed centrepiece was their magic kingdom. Of course, the sometimes garish and overly flamboyant style that evolved wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. One particularly venomous critic with an imaginative way with words described them as “a vulgar display of Victorian foppery that would cauterize the eye of the beholder.” Even with the criticism, the carpet gardening style continued to flourish and made its way across the Atlantic to parks all over North America – and eventually here in the Beach. Unfortunately, the Kew carpetbed gradually fell into decline over the last

10 or 15 years and the original circular structure just became a holding pen for a variety of run-of-the-mill annuals. I had always hoped for a resurrection but that’s probably about as likely as roaming the creaky wooden aisles of the Beach Woolworth again. The last remnants of what remained of the original carpetbed’s flagstone frame was carted off in the back of a dump truck during the renovations to the park entrance this year. The Kew bed might be gone but there are still a few examples of these curiosities around town. There are two large carpetbeds at the entrance to Edwards Gardens in North York, one of which depicts the CN tower and seven foot Blue Jays logo to celebrate their fortieth anniversaries. The beds may not qualify as a “vulgar display of Victorian foppery,” but if you stand there long enough you might hear a visitor shout, “Wow, look at that!”

ith summer nearing its end and kids and parents alike prepping for back-to-school, new beginnings are in the air. Back to school time is always a bit melancholy, as we dread the cold weather to come – at least I do – and the end of summer freedom. But with the new season and school starting soon, there is also the excitement of something fresh and new about to happen. It’s the perfect time to start thinking about making a great working space – either to get homework done, or for a home office. So many of us work from home these days, and many don’t have an actual space dedicated to this. There are a few things to consider when making a homework nook or home office space. You want it to feel inviting and not too stark or office-like. I asked Leslieville Flea vendor and Beach resident Roni Brown of MDA (Modern Design, Artistic) Interiors to share some photos and ideas from one of her recent home office makeovers. Roni strives to bring the homeowner’s personality into their space. Being a strong advocate of vintage furnishings and accessories, she often incorporates them into her clients’ spaces. This adds a unique vibe, along with added quality. One of the major concerns in any home office is storage. You need space to store all your office/homework essentials, but you also want it to look great since this area is often shared, often in a kitchen or spare bedroom. It’s always a good idea to use more interesting items to store things rather than the standard office furniture/accessories.

Use a mix of vintage along with modern items and your room will be unique and custom to you. Instead of using a typical desk, try finding a vintage desk or even a small dining table. It’s always a good idea to have another surface in addition to your desk, and a vintage teak sideboard or similar piece will store all your office supplies and give you a spot to put your printer and other essentials on. Instead of buying new filing cabinets, use a vintage metal or wood cabinet. They are so much more interesting (and often better built than new). Vintage ‘In and Out’ trays are functional and fun. Be sure to invest in good lighting and a comfortable and ergonomic desk chair. You should have general overhead lighting as well as task lighting on the work surface (always put desk lighting on the opposite side of the hand you write with). Vintage desk lamps can add a bit of style to any work area. Wood crates and boxes make excellent storage pieces for office supplies, and keep messy items out of site. Putting down an area carpet will help define the space, as well as add some warmth underneath. A chalk or cork board is a great idea for keeping organized. Try to find an oversized board (you can get handcrafted ones that look fabulous) or paint an area of the wall in chalkboard paint and use for doodling, writing notes or sketching out ideas. By taking a bit of extra time and adding some unique details you can make your home office or homework area more enjoyable to be in – and then work won’t seem so tasking.

T

he eastern end of the city recently received a bad rap by one of our daily newspapers, with an opinion piece suggesting there was not much happening in the East End, mainly the Beach. This is and was a load of nonsense. Nowhere else do you see such a diversity of activity as in our eastern area – from Coxwell Avenue on the west to Victoria Park on the east, the waterfront on the south to the Danforth on the north, it’s unlike any other area in Toronto. We are now receiving word of some of the activities of some of our great East End athletes down in Brazil for the 2016 Olympics. We are proud to have a young athlete who has won four medals for her Beach city and country. Sixteen-year-old Penny Oleksiak is a great Olympian who has a stellar future in front of her. She has a great family which includes other gifted athletes. This article was not to be about Penny or others like her, but about our sports and recreation areas in the Beach. However, when I began to write it, the world was astounded to see this great young athlete break all types of athletic and Olympic records, so I had to begin with this great Canadian athlete from the Beach. For our athletics tour, let us start with grey sand area east of Coxwell Avenue called Ashbridges Park. Do you know that in this area beside the lake at least 1,500 athletes play beach volleyball? Where else in the city do you find so many athletes playing beach volleyball, possibly preparing for the Olympics, like past local heroes John Child and Mark Heese, who competed in three Olympic games, winning bronze in Atlanta in 1996?

For those who wish to ride bicycles, we have part of the Martin Goodman Trail, a place where people young and old cycle through our eastern beaches morning, noon and night. We also have our boardwalk, just south of the Martin Goodman Trail, where thousands walk and enjoy the cool breeze of the lake. Let us not forget the aquatic sports at Ashbridges Bay. We first find the Beaches Lions Club, a great social club specializing in serving the community for eight decades. The Lions have a clubhouse and water facilities for boaters from the Balmy Beach Canoe Club and other organizations. It was the Lions Club that donated two wading pools for children at Woodbine and Kew Beach Park. South on Ashbridges Bay we find the Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club, where many sailors have their canoes, boats and kayaks. The area is home to the Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club, originally the Woodbine Yacht Club. These integral aquatic facilities have been around for many decades. North of the Lakeshore on Coxwell Avenue, we have the Beach Skatepark, where those who are young and young at heart can skateboard to their hearts’ content – athletes abound! East on the sunbather-filled beach, we come to the Donald Summerville pool at the foot of Woodbine Avenue. Donald Summerville was a mayor of Toronto who resided in the Beach area. A great sportsman, the pool was named after his death in 1963. This Olympic-sized pool is the place where many would-be Olympians practise their dives and swimming prowess. It’s the place where our Olympian Penny Oleksiak swims. For those tennis fans, east of the pool, is the Kew Beach Tennis Club at the foot of Waverly Road and Kenilworth Avenue. The club has been around for well over 100 years, winning many awards and spawning some of the best tennis players in the area. Again proceeding east on the lakefront, we come across a combination ice rink and lacrosse area at the bottom of Lee Avenue. The Beaches Lacrosse Club is one of the finest lacrosse clubs in the area, with hundreds of successful lacrosse players practising here over the years.

Beach Memories

Beach athletics a reason to cheer Continued from previous page In the winter, the lacrosse rink turns into the Kew Beach Skating Rink, the spot for pleasure skating in the Beach. The Balmy Beach Oldtimers have played in this rink for many years. Next door is the championship-winning Kew Beach Lawn Bowling Club, which has been around for over 120 years. It welcomes young and old, so if anyone wants to join, please come down. How can we not comment on one of the Beach’s greatest sports – baseball? Kew Gardens Baseball Diamond a couple of hundred feet south of Queen at Lee has been a part of the East End scene for more than 120 years. At one time, there would be over 7,000 fans coming to see baseball at Kew Gardens. Also, sports enthusiasts, we had ladies playing fastball. Hold onto your hats – these ladies drew crowds of 7,500. Remember – these teams played in the 1930s and 1940s when there was no television. Pantry Park in the back of Kew Beach School was named by the late great Ted Reeve, who said the original sports field was the size of his pantry. Over the years the park expanded and has been used for many activities. Now, east to the bottom of Beech Ave., where we gaze upon the legend by the lake, the venerable Balmy Beach Club. I would write about the numerous events and

awards that the club and the members of the club have won, but there is not enough time. The club, which also boasts a terrific lawn bowling club, has produced more medals in aquatic sports, rugby and football than I can recall. A little further east is the Silver Birch Boathouse, which has been around since the 1930s. Today, it is the only boathouse where you can store canoes and kayaks for a nominal fee, but at one time there were dozens of boathouses along the beach. We must also mention the city and employees who carefully maintain the parks and green spaces. Thanks especially to the parks and recreation people at Beaches Recreation Centre at 6 Williamson Road and Lee Avenue. These recreationists are in a class by themselves with the volunteers of the Beach Advisory Council, responsible for the annual Beaches Spring Sprint, which attracts nearly 800 people for a race along the boardwalk, swimming programs at Glen Ames School, fitness programs at the Kew Beach boathouse, seniors’ programs in Kew Gardens, archery, basketball, gymnastics, and many more. All the best to our athletes, past, present and future. Gene Domagala will lead a historical walk Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. Meet at the northest corner of Danforth and Main. The walk will end at the old mill on Dawes Road. All are welcome.

Beach karate athlete Anna Dawson competes in kata at the Ontario Summer Games in Mississauga. PHOTO: KEN BENSON

Provincial karate medals By Gillian Benson

FIVE ATHLETES from Kuma Karate-Do, a Beach-based karate club, qualified to compete in the Ontario Summer Games karate competition, held in Mississauga on Aug. 12. The competition included kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Local athletes Annaliese Bissell and Anna Dawson competed in both disciplines, Olivia Dawson and Sam Chau competed in kata, and Nathalie D’Andrea competed in kumite. D’Andrea earned a silver medal and Bissell took home a bronze, both in kumite. Ken Benson, Kuma Karate-Do head coach and Ontario provincial team coach, was pleased with the hard work that the athletes put in, giving up part of their summer vacation to train and compete.

“The athletes demonstrated the same work ethic that Olympic athletes need to succeed. Each athlete has been training in karate for over five years, and they are committed and dedicated to push themselves to get better,” he said. The Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport holds the multi-sport Games every other year. It is designed to provide a high-performance competition experience for athletes ages 12 to 17 competing in 32 different sports. It is a stepping-stone to the Canada Games, Pan Am Games and Olympic Games. With karate included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, this year’s Ontario Summer Games took on more meaning for both the athletes and Karate Ontario, the province’s sport organization that is part of the Canadian Olympic pathway.

One of the highlights has to be the largest street festival in Canada that takes place early in August every year. I’m talking, of course, about Krinos “Taste of the Danforth” (August 5 to 7 this year). Organized by the Greek Town BIA on Danforth, it started back in 1994 as a spin-off of Taste of Chicago in the US. Originally, it was meant as a celebration of Hellenic culture and around 5,000 people, including myself, attended that first year. Since then, it has grown to be one of the stellar events of the summer, evolving into a spectacular showcase of the multiculturalism that Toronto is so famous for. Attendance has skyrocketed to about 1.65 million people over the course of the three-day event. Celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year, the event was even bigger and better than ever. Although there are lots of free activities for both adults and children including contests, amusements, live entertainment, displays, samples and more, let’s face it: this festival is all about the food and drink. Although, many different types of cuisine are offered as numerous types of restaurants call the Danforth home, it’s Greek cuisine that shines. After all, this is Greek Town. The smell of grilling

souvlaki and gyros, moussaka, calamari, spinach pie and other Hellenic delights fill the air, tantalizing the taste buds. You don’t even have to be hungry, but the intoxicating aromas will get you there in no time. The Danforth, closed off to vehicular traffic from Broadview to Jones, is literally one long “groaning board” of gastronomic delights with grilling/ cooking stations set up out front of restaurants all along the way. One could stroll the length of the festival sampling different dishes en route, like an endless buffet that stretches two kilometres! Let’s not forget about drink. The number of bars along the Danforth is incredible, all offering a place to lay back from the throng, observe the endless parade of passerby and wet one’s whistle. With pretty much every possible form of potable available, either at stations out in front of restaurants and bars for non-alcoholic versions or within for spirited styles, of particular note are all the Greek libations offered. Greek wine has come a long way since the days of Retsina and Mavrodaphne. Now exciting varietals like the white Assyrtiko, Athiri, Malagousia, Roditis and Moscofilero and the red Agiorgitiko and Xinomavro are being crafted by young, talented winemakers into world class wines. Greek beer like Fix Hellas Lager, Volken Grey, Mary Rose Red Ale, Red Donkey, Mythos Lager and Sunday’s Honey Golden Ale are in high demand too. Many of these wines and beers are available in the eateries and bars along the strip. Also in abundance is delicious Greek coffee. The festival is so well organized that it seems almost effortless in appearance and the Greek sun god himself, Helios, who drives the sun chariot across the sky each day, must watch over this event with fond eyes. The weather always seems great for it. It’s not too early to mark your calendars now for next year’s festival. Dates are Aug. 11 to 13, 2017. Don’t miss it.

f you have a pot or patch of herbs growing in your garden, August is the time to start harvesting. When I say herbs, I mean the flavourful, edible leaves of plants such as parsley, chives, basil, tarragon, oregano, dill and so on. A simple snip of the scissors will do the trick for harvesting, then wash well in several changes of cool water and dry thoroughly in a salad spinner. (Much easier than trying to dry with numerous tea towels!) Many people are used to the old-fashioned technique of preserving herbs by drying. This is done by tying in a bunch with string and hanging upside down to dry in an airy room, usually the kitchen. This process will take several days or a week to have the bunch of herbs dried thoroughly. Although drying works well, you lose some of the essential oils in the herb. The oils are what gives it flavour and you will definitely lose most of the vibrant colour. Freezing is faster, and it is done immediately unlike drying, which takes several days. By freezing you definitely have the intense taste of “just picked.” My favourite technique is to finely chop the clean, dry leaves of the herb and measure out the chopped herb in quarter-cup or four tablespoon (60 mL) quantities, useful for most recipes, then wrap in plastic wrap to produce a small flat, square package. Pack like packages in a freezer bag, date, label and freeze for up to one year. You will have the flavour and colour of a just-picked herb. One edible herb that is frequently forgotten is lavender. Lavender smells and looks wonderful, but tastes great too. Harvest the vibrant blue-purple blooms of lavender at their prime and freeze or dry them by tying in a bunch and hanging upside down, then store in a jar for cooking fragrant and tasty treats. Be sure your lavender is pesticide free before using in cooking. Lavender you grow in your own garden without pesticides is considered “food grade” and is safe to eat. Add preserved lavender to shortbread, salad dressings and ice cream, not to mention the recipe that follows – it tastes divine! Chicken with Honey and Lavender This recipe from Foodland Ontario produces sweet and tasty thighs ideal for an easy summer dinner. Serve with a salad and crusty bread. Marinade: 1 tbsp (15 mL) grated lemon rind 1/4 cup (60 mL) fresh lemon juice 3 tbsp (45 mL) vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 tsp (20 mL) food-grade dried lavender 1 tbsp (15 mL) finely chopped fresh rosemary 2 tsp (10 mL) finely chopped fresh thyme 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/4 tsp (1 mL) fresh black pepper Chicken: 1/3 cup (80 mL) liquid honey (local) 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard 2 lbs (1 kg) boneless, skinless chicken thighs

In a medium bowl, whisk together lemon rind, lemon juice, oil, garlic, lavender, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper. Remove 2 tbsp (30 mL) marinade and set aside. Add the remaining marinade to a heavy freezer plastic bag and add the chicken thighs massaging the thighs with the marinade. Refrigerate an hour or overnight. Preheat oven to 400°F (220°C). Remove the chicken thighs to a 13 by 9 inch (3 L) baking dish. Arrange in a single layer, spooning some of the marinade over thighs. Discard remaining marinade. Bake chicken covered for 30 minutes, basting with pan juices about half way through cooking. In small bowl, whisk the reserved marinade with the honey and mustard until smooth. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F (190°C). Brush the chicken with the sauce and bake about 14 to 20 minutes, uncovered, until internal temperature of the thighs reaches 165°F (74°C) or juices run clear. Serve immediately, or at room temperature. Makes six servings.

BROAD LINGERIE owner Sam Conover has been in the bra business for over a decade. Over those years she’s had many conversations with women – particularly busty women – about their experiencing finding a bra that fits, in an environment that’s comfortable, and at a price that’s reasonable. Those conversations, combined with her own experience, have shaped the experience at Broad, where the ethos is “buying a big bra doesn’t have to be a big deal.” “During my time as a bra fitter, I realized that well over half of our clientele were D cup or above. But I still heard so many women complaining about how hard it was to find bras in size D or larger and so many of them seemed to feel that their size was unusual. Yet experience and data told me that full busted women were actually pretty common,” she said. She also noticed that many women in this size range hated bra shopping. “If you wear a full bust size, you are usually limited to shopping in specialty boutiques because department and chain stores usually don’t sell anything above a DD,” she said, noting that while these boutiques are great, the high-end shopping experience isn’t for everyone and can be expensive and intimidating, with a limited selection for full bust options. “I started to daydream of a place where being busty was the norm, not the exception. I wanted this place to be accessible, comfortable and down-to-earth. Less of a boutique and more of a haven or gathering place,” she said, noting that she’s built the store with a “fuss-free” experience in mind. Customers are encouraged to work with a fitter, but they don’t have to. Walk-ins are welcome, she tries to keep most bras under $100, and the fitting rooms are large enough to fit a stroller. Indeed, one adaptation she’s made over the last four months is the addition of nursing bras. “This was not a part of my original plan because Evie Mamma had a store on the Danforth. But they moved locations, and suddenly I was flooded with phone calls, emails and requests over social media,” she said. Broad makes a point to stay connected to its customers – and that attention to detail has helped word-of-mouth spread. “It’s only been four months, but I know I would not have made it this far without the support of my customers and neighbours. Most of my customers hear about my store through word-of-mouth, which is incredibly encouraging,” she said. “If people are recommending my store to their friends and family, that means I’m on the right path! And the neighbourhood businesses have been very supportive as well. I will never forget the guy from the Lifer Tattoo shop who shoveled in front of the store after a big storm, the owner of Pose salon who pressed a $20 bill into my hand for good luck or the owner of Len who dropped off a fantastic candle and card. This is a community that supports one another.” Broad Lingerie is located at 1763 Danforth Ave. Find more information at broadlingerie.com.

Broad Lingerie on Danforth offers custom bra fitting and sales for busty women.

BUILDING BLOCK Associates, based in Leslieville and run by local resident Dwayne Reno, recently launched its new restaurant management service, Manage Mie, just in time for the company’s third anniversary. The service is aimed at helping independent foodservice operators manage food costs as well as marketing. Mie (pronounced ‘me’) is a Japanese word that means ‘triple branch’ – representing Manage Mie’s online food supply store, in-house marketing manager, and online marketing management. Food purchases will earn credits that can be used for marketing services, explained Reno. “One of our goals with Manage Mie is to help independent foodservice operators free up much needed capital,” he said. For a demo of Manage Mie, email dreno@buildingblockassociates.com or call 647-951-5880. •

BEACH UNITED Church is partnering with Affordable Funeral Services Inc. to offer an alternative to funeral home burial arrangements. The company’s founder John O’Sullivan says the idea is to offer full funeral arrangements – visitation, service, reception – directly through a person’s local church community, resulting in lower funeral costs. At the same time

the church benefits from the partnership. “The prices are much less … than a funeral home and approximately half the profit goes to the church,” he said. The service covers everything from the casket or cremation container to government paperwork, with options ranging from simple cremation to full services including flowers and an organist. For full pricing and package information, see affordablefuneralservices.ca or contact the church at 416-691-8082. •

LYNDA GRIMARD-WATT recently opened the Children’s French Book Corner at Gerrard Street East and Main Street. The long-time local resident found it difficult to obtain French books for her children, and an opportunity arose when two of her friends opened the Unlimited Arts Studio. The Book Corner takes up a corner of the studio at 152 Main St. Grimard-Watt offers books that are “engaging, funny, inspiring, books that both parents and kids have fun reading together while learning basic French words, books that would help children stay engaged into the French program they are enrolled into.” Stop by the studio to check out the selections in this local small business or visit childrensfrenchbookcorner.com. Quartermaster follows something of a ‘golden rule’ theory with referrals – only good experiences are shown, so rather than filtering through positive and negative reviews, users only see those local businesses with positive feedback from other users. Along with the referral network, Quartermaster also allows users private storage for home-related details such as serial numbers, maintenance schedules, user manuals and digital receipts. Users can also create shared calendars or how-to guides for tenants or visitors, such as garbage schedules, laundry instructions or how to use an alarm system. AFTERGLOW STUDIO held its grand opening at 2032 and 2034 Queen St. E. earlier this summer. The studio offers a variety of yoga instruction in their 3,000 square foot-plus facility, overseen by co-owners Julie Watson and Elizabeth Doyle Harmer. Watson brings more than a decade of experience in fitness, nutrition and yoga training. Doyle Harmer’s yoga training is balanced on the business side with an MBA from McGill. The studio is designed to feel like the outdoors has been brought inside its two practice rooms, while also offering perks such as free WiFi and tea. As the owners write in the studio’s ‘manifesto’, “We are the beacher, the biker, the boardwalk surfer. We are the artist, the writer, and entrepreneur. The outdoor worker, and work from homer.
