Former Beach MP pushes for new province By Anna Killen
Volume 45 No. 9
June 28, 2016
A FORMER Beach MP wants Vancouver Island to become its own province. Robin Richardson, who represented the Beaches riding as a Progressive Conservative from 1979-1980, the first year for the newly-created riding, has founded the Vancouver Island Party, calling for the establishment of Vancouver Island as Canada’s newest province. The party is seeking candidates to run in the May 2017 provincial election in BC and said its mission is to “benefit more fully Vancouver Island as a region of British Columbia economically, socially, environmen-
tally and culturally, and … to establish Vancouver Island as a province of Canada as soon as possible.” Its platform calls for lower or free tuition, preferential hiring for Vancouver Island students, and improved health care. “Our beloved Island’s distinct way of life is under threat from severe climate change, federal and provincial government indifference and economic, social and environmental injustices,” Richardson said in a news release. Richardson, an economist and pastor who has been involved in conservative political campaigns throughout his political career, said the party is “centrist in nature.”

‘Now is the time to be brave’: man stands up to hate crime By Anna Killen
HANG OUT with East Ender Dean Will on his front steps for 20 minutes and it’s notable how many of the people who pass by stop for a quick chat. Neighbours walking their dogs, escorting their kids home from school – Will has a connection with the lot of them. It doesn’t take long for someone to mention what’s been on Will’s mind all week. “I’m sorry about what happened to your flags,” said one neighbour as she approached her steps. “What a bunch of jerks, eh?” For more than three years, two pride flags have decorated Will’s front entrance – a large one underneath the second storey window and another flying from his front railing – but just over a week ago, someone began tearing them down. Not only were his flags torn down on two separate occasions – first on Thursday night, then again on Saturday night – but the word “fag” was written in chalk on his front door, and on Monday morning someone yelled that same de-
rogatory word at him through his open front door before running off with the replacement flag he’d purchased the day before. “10:15 in the morning,” said Will, who has been diligently replacing the flags as they’ve been taken down, not one to cower to bullies. “Broad daylight. I’ve had pride flags all of the years I’ve lived here and I’ve never had a problem. And then this starts happening … It’s mindless. It’s a violation of my space.” For Will, a gay man living with AIDS who has lost most of his eyesight, the experience of being harassed and having his home targeted has been jarring to say the least. “I’m being targeted and I don’t like it,” he said. “I have enough problems with my health and with my eyesight, I’m really not looking for any more problems here.” He’s reported the incidents to the police and to his community housing board, and says the response from officials has been supportive and swift, with an investigation launched and extra patrols of the neighbourhood. He’s also requested a security camera for his front door.
Just as supportive and swift has been the response from the broader community. Will’s friend Sandra posted a note about Will’s experience on Facebook on Monday afternoon, and within what felt like minutes dozens of people were writing notes of encouragement and expressing outrage. Those posts quickly turned into action, with a plan hatched to purchase a batch of pride flags for people to fly from their homes and a mini-rally held last week in Will’s honour. “It’s actually very worrying that he would be targeted and harassed in that way, especially coming so soon after the Orlando massacre,” said Michael Rusek, a member of the Danforth and Woodbine Pride Group who helped to organize the June 23. The group has purchased a large flag to replace Will’s damaged one. Rusek said he moved to the Danforth and Woodbine neighbourhood with his partner Eric three years ago, and has had “nothing but good things to say about how welcoming and just plain nice everyone has

been. If you walk anywhere in the neighbourhood, you’ll inevitably see many pride flags hanging up outside people’s houses. I’m a big guy, but there are some parts of the city where I might be a bit nervous holding Eric’s hand. But not here.” Will tends to agree. “There are pockets of people who look inward
and are not very inclusive, but by and large it’s a fairly left-of-centre community,” he said. That feeling has been underscored by the outpouring of support the community has shown him over the last week. ‘Pride flag’ continued on Page 3

Cleaning up park a rewarding experience By Jon Muldoon
PETER WOODCOCK was more than a little surprised to find out he’d been named as the winner of the inaugural Clean, Green and Beautiful Award. “It kind of caught me off guard,” he said, noting that he had originally felt honoured when he thought he’d only been nominated. The award was handed out at Community Centre 55’s annual general meeting on June 7. The organization’s board and management decided to honour someone each year who makes positive improvements to a public outdoor space through some sort of project or initiative. For Woodcock, that includes numerous activities in Stephenson Park, near Main Street and Danforth Avenue, after forming an association out of necessity. He was reading Ward 32 Councillor Mary-Margaret McMa-

Canada Day celebrations, yoga in the park, an outdoor skating rink and more. When he first moved to the area almost six years ago, Stephenson Park was not the family-friendly space it is now – at least not at all hours of the day. Woodcock witnessed drug deals, prostitution, and more, but between the cleanups and the regular activities, there’s a transformation in progress, thanks to the ongoing efforts of Woodcock and a small but dedicated group of neighbours who have been fighting to reclaim their public space. “We’re trying to make it a nicer park and a safer park,” said Woodcock. Jon Morrice, the crime prevention officer at 55 Division, appreciates the work the local residents around the park have been doing. In fact, he’s the one who nominated Woodcock for the award. “A few years ago Stephenson Park was having a few problems,” said Morrice. He is a proponent of neighbourhoods nurturing a sense of ownership over their parks, and believes a constant stream of activity, such as what has happened at Stephenson Park, is one of the best ways a community can discourage crime. “Since then our calls for service for that sort of thing have decreased,” said Morrice. “It’s at its best now.” Anyone interested in seeing how a small, grassroots community group can transform a local park – or anyone interested in cake, lemonade, music and a bonfire, among other after-dark Canada Day activities – is welcome to head to Stephenson Park on July 1 to say “happy birthday” to the country with a group of neighbours who know what the Canadian spirit is all about. The Friends of Stephenson Park are on Facebook. Make sure to check in for details on the park’s weekly live music series later this summer.

East Ender Dean Will accepts a pride flag from Michael Rusek, right, of the Danforth and Woodbine Pride Group, and speaks to supporters including Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, left, at a June 23 event in his honour. “This isn’t just about me, this is about all of you,” said Will. “The rainbow flag doesn’t just mean ‘gay’. It means all of you, no matter who you are, whether you’re purple from Mars. Don’t ever forget, you don’t have to justify who you are to anybody. Fly your flag with pride.”
‘Pride flag’, continued from Page 1 “Holy cow. Really? I’m very touched. I don’t know what to say,” said Will when he learned what people were saying and planning online – he doesn’t use Facebook. “I’m taken aback by the support,” he said. “It’s not just me, it’s the whole wider issue of homophobia. This time it has my name on it but it can have anybody’s name on it.” Since the post went up, neighbours have been honking and giving Will the thumbs up when they see him. One woman dropped off muffins, and another man stopped and gave him a hug. “The community’s been very supportive and I’m extremely grateful for that,” he said. “People are being really, really nice. I think people are hyper-aware about this because of what happened in Orlando. I was saying to Sandra, ‘Look, I didn’t get beat up, I didn’t get shot at, they were just pieces of cloth and some nasty
words.’ But nonetheless, it’s a hate crime and it’s a violation of my space.” No stranger to activism – Will worked with Judy Rebick and Gary Malkowski for years during his career as a deaf translator and has long been involved in gay, handicapped, and animal rights throughout his life – he said he is going to attend the event tomorrow to meet in person the people who have supported him. And there’s no question he’s going to keep flying his flags – and is happy others will be doing the same over Pride weekend and afterwards. “It’s a show of solidarity and people feel safety in numbers. And for the gay and lesbian people who live around here, it’s comforting to know that you’re not alone,” he said. “Now is not the time to be afraid, now is the time to be brave.”
EAST END residents took a look at updated plans for a proposed 8-storey condo development along the Danforth at a June 20 community consultation at Secord Community Centre. Marlin Spring’s Canvas Condominium development is proposed for the site of the former Wise Guys bar at 2301 and 2315 Danforth between Morton Road and Patricia Drive. The original application proposed 166 residential units with 259 square metres of live/work units along Danforth Avenue. That’s now changed to 172 residential units and 377 square metres of retail and commercial space along Danforth. The building’s height has also been scaled back roughly three metres. City planner Derrick Wong said that the revised application has “significant” changes which stem from a community meeting earlier this year where residents expressed “legitimate issues” with the proposal. “Are we there yet, 100 per cent? No,” said Wong. “There are still a couple of issues, but (the revisions made) are pretty significant.” Most notable is the shift away from live/work units to straight retail and commercial units, and changes to the building’s façade and structure as it faces the Danforth. “There were comments coming back that it was too monolithic,” he said. “If you take a look at the newest elevation he’s broken it up quite a bit, particularly at grade, he’s introduced more elements, more planes in order to make it more interesting, because that was something that kept coming back.” The city prefers retail and commercial space to live/work units at this site, explained Wong. “At the end of the day what we’re looking to do is animate the street,” he said. “This has a very large frontage on Danforth. If you put residential at grade then you’re not going to have as much activity. You want commercial that’s not just a service to the residents but also animates the street.” Developer Zev Mandelbaum of Marlin Spring still thinks live/work units would be better for this property. That’s because he thinks “the future of street retail in the city of Toronto is very tough as retail transforms itself and evolves to become more digital. The idea of a live/work is where a person can float one mortgage for both his business and his home and it can create a dynamic use of the space, whereas before he’d be leaving a larger footprint, now he can leave a smaller footprint over two levels. I think it creates an opportunity where people can have one mortgage, a more efficient, more viable business and create more life on the streets as well.” But ultimately, he decided to listen to feedback from the city and residents who questioned the viability of the live/work spaces. “It definitely was not my preference,” he said. “But we listened to the commu-
nity and the city staff and they had some reservations about it and we complied.” He said the project plans have gone through “many, many, many changes” and he thinks “right now we have the optimal plan that satisfies everyone to the best of their abilities.” “The project has come along in a good way,” said councillor Joe Mihevc, who replaced councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon on this file because she lives close to the development. “The height has been reduced by over nine feet, the angular planes are more respectful of the angular plane guidelines, which in lay terms means less shadow, less overlook on neighbours both to the north and south.” He said the developer has been responsive to concerns from residents. “I think we’re really close to a deal here. You never make a final decision until you see the report, but I think this is coming in a good direction,” he said.
“” “You never make a final decision until you see the report, but I think this is coming in a good direction” – Councillor Joe Mihevc
Residents still have concerns – that includes congestion, particularly on Patricia Drive, construction, and increased laneway activity. But Wong said that even though people are used to only a few cars in the laneway, it is a public laneway and the city’s policies around developer’s utilization of laneways is a safety and planning issue. He acknowledges that increased activity takes “some getting used to. It’s a difficult transition.” At this particular site, the laneway is not continuous and has a house at one end. If the city determined that the traffic impact would be too much or too dangerous, they could require that the developer purchase the house before allowing the development to proceed – but that isn’t the case here, explained Wong. Residents still have an opportunity to provide feedback to the revised proposal before city staff develop their report and recommendation, which will head to the East York Community Council in the fall. And a group is still collecting signatures for its petition opposing the size and height of the development. The group, which calls itself Friends of Danforth East, submitted a first petition to the city late last year and has been actively pressing the developer to make changes to its proposal.

MORE THAN a dozen seniors and other interested East End residents gathered at the Beaches Library June 21 to hear how to protect themselves from scams. Toronto Police Det. Const. Kristin Thomas knows fraud when she sees it – she’s the sole fraud investigator for 55 Division – but others might not know the tactics scammers use to trick people out of their money. Frauds are increasingly sophisticated, but most rely on the victim letting their guard down, if only for a moment. She’s travelling throughout 55 Division hosting meetings for seniors, of-

ten the victim of these types of crimes, so that they can be better equipped to know an attempted fraud when they
encounter one. “Frauds are on the rise,” she said. “And there are so many that are affecting
our seniors – not just our seniors, but our families, young, it doesn’t matter your age. They’re evolving.” Thomas detailed some of the most common scams and tactics. Often scammers will call in the middle of the night to catch people off guard, sometimes pretending to be a loved one in trouble who needs money – this is often dubbed “the Grandparent Scam.” Another common scam is the “Lottery Scam”, where a caller or letter will say you have won money, and need to cash a cheque – which is fraudulent but looks incredibly real – and send them money before you can collect your winnings. One scam that has been prevalent in the GTA lately is the CRA scam, with an aggressive caller saying that you owe back taxes. You will never have to send money to get a gift or winnings in a real lottery, explained Thomas. And no one in an official capacity like the CRA would demand money immediately or in a payment form such as a pre-paid Visa or iTunes gift card. She said the best thing to do when confronted by a scam caller is to hang up. “Stay off the phone, don’t give them the time of day,” she said. Thomas encourages anyone who has experienced a fraud, or who has questions about how to protect themselves from fraud, to contact her office at 416-808-5507.

In My Opinion
In praise of bike lanes, the future of urban transport David Toushek Woodbine Avenue resident
GREAT NEWS fellow Beachers: after years of neglect from the previous suburban-dominated, carcentric city council, our great city is once again moving progressively into the future – and the Beach is up to bat! On June 22 and 23 the City of Toronto hosted two drop-in events for residents to learn more about the new bike lanes coming to our neighborhood. I know this is great news for most Beach residents who understand the value of making our
streets more vibrant, safe and accessible to all commuters (not just those with an exhaust pipe), as well as for those from neighborhoods to the north who would love a safe way to bike down to the Beach and not have to drive around in circles for 40 minutes looking for a place to park. But I also know some people are very worried that the new bike lanes will add to an already difficult rush hour commute on Woodbine, while others are afraid the new lanes will force traffic onto their quiet side streets. Let me say this: I understand your concerns, and trust me, more congestion and more idling cars in front of my house (on Woodbine!) is the last thing I want, too. But
that’s precisely WHY we need to build these lanes! Bike lanes and “complete streets” are part of the solution to several problems we face. Traffic congestion is just one, but there are also pollution, global warming, depression, sickness, mental health, and so on. Single occupant traffic is a major contributor to many of these same problems. So here’s the thing: everyone wants to live in a city that is clean and pleasant, and easy to get around in – whether on foot, by bicycle or by car. But if that’s truly what we want, then we have to build it. We can’t complain about traffic, and at the same time not build bike lanes for those who would love to leave their
cars at home. We can’t complain about congestion, pollution, or angry Toronto drivers if we’re not going to do what it takes to build the future we want. The days of prioritizing for the single occupant driver are over. Mass transit, cycling and walking are being prioritized by most forward looking cities. Even Mississauga (the place where people drive down the street for a loaf of bread) has decided to change its ways and start building healthier options for a more healthy and vibrant city. I would also say that fears are overblown. Just take a look at Dundas Street. Dundas has become a great way for people to commute by bicycle and vehicle traffic still
flows quite smoothly (without pouring into neighboring side streets). Don’t believe me? Just go over and ask those residents how they feel about the new bike lanes – I’m sure they’d love to tell you how it’s helped improve their neighborhood. The future involves clean modes of healthy, low-pollution transportation where traffic flows quickly, safely and smoothly. Smart vehicles and smart traffic lights, as well as mass transit, are going to be major parts of that future – and so are cycling and walking. Let’s build the city we want to live in! For full details on the Woodbine bike lanes and to fill out a feedback form and share your opinion, visit toronto.ca/woodbinebikelanes.

Everyone Has a Story to Tell
The man behind the Queen Street hiking sticks By Anna Killen
IF YOU’VE found yourself on Queen Street just east of Ivan Forrest Gardens on a weekend, there’s a fair chance you’ve seen Robert Bertram on his balcony – and if you haven’t seen the man, you’ve likely seen the sticks and the sign. A handwritten sign noting “Unique Hiking Sticks” for sale hangs on a green balcony underneath several handcrafted hiking sticks strung from the balcony’s roof. Often on the weekend, Bertram will be perched on the balcony crafting the sticks, or chatting with passersby curious about his process. Retired from a career in the public sector, with a degree in political science, Bertram said making the hiking sticks is a hobby that started about four years ago. He was at his sister’s cottage on the Bruce Peninsula, and she had hurt her leg and needed some support for their walk. “So I cut her a hiking stick, then took an extra one back [to the cottage], started working on them, and enjoyed it,” said Bertram, who now travels to his sister’s two or three times a year to collect deadfall that he strips there and then brings back here to finish. “You get all sorts of surprises.”
Those surprises range from rot inside – in that case, it turns into firewood – to intricate insect work beneath the bark. On one of the finished sticks Bertram showed me, insects had left delicate impressions on the wood that almost looked like Chinese characters – and on another stick, larger grubs had left their mark of a thicker pattern. Bertram sands and finishes the wood in a simple manner using sandpaper, a dremel to round the handle, and wood varnish to draw out the natural highlights. In one piece, he amplified the juxtaposition between an inner layer of dead wood and an outer layer of new wood that had grown around the dead wood, by making the new layer extra shiny, and keeping the old wood more dull. While some might carve into or warp the wood, Bertram’s process keeps it simple and lets nature do the embellishing. He said he enjoys finding out some of the history of the wood – woodworking runs in his family, with his father being a craftsman, so he has worked with wood all of his life. His sticks come in all types – pine, cedar, “cranky” – and popular – ironwood. He said people enjoy the dark ones more – why, he isn’t sure – and he thinks the majority of his customers are buying them for art rather than walking sticks.

Robert Bertram, purveyor of unique hiking sticks, is seen on his Queen Street East balcony, where passersby might have spotted a sign advertising his wares.
“I suspect that most people buy them just as works of art,” he said. “A few people will use them, and they are useful in rough woods.” Of his roughly three dozen customers a year – that’s about all he is interested in making, as it is a hobby – many come upon him while
he is sitting on his balcony, either working or taking in the sights of Queen Street. A Beacher since 1979, he moved into these apartments several years ago after selling his house. His balcony is “marvelous at Jazz [festival],” he said. “Have a glass
of wine, the band’s right there. Or Easter parade or marathon, you just sit out here and enjoy it.” And the million dollar question: Does he use a hiking stick when out in the woods? “You’re damn right I do,” he said, smiling. “It’s actually pretty plain.”

THE 28TH annual Beaches International Jazz Festival kicks off next weekend, and it’s come a long way since its humble beginnings in Kew Gardens, this year taking over the East End for much of the month of July. Woodbine Park will be host to a Salsa Festival (July 2 and 3), two main stage weekends (July 15 to 17, July 22 to 24) and the Taste of Jazz (July 19 and 20). The city’s best street festival will shut down Queen Street from Woodbine to Beech Avenue on the evenings of July 21, 22 and 23. A satellite event will take place in Jimmie Simpson Park on July 8, 9 and 10. And, the icing on the cake – or at least the soundtrack to shopping for local ingredients for a cake – bands will perform at local farmers’ markets as part of the ever-expanding festival. There is also the annual ‘Jazz Up your Windows’ Queen Street storefront window decorating contest, a fundraising fun run for Michael Garron Hospital on July 24 and firefighters collecting donations for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The Toronto All-Star Big Band will perform at the Fairmount Park Farmers’ Market on Wednesday, July 6 and 13, and at the East Lynn Farmers’ Market on Thursday, July 7 and 14. The Leslieville Farmers’ Market, at Jonathan Ashbridge Park will host the Discovery Through the Arts program on Sunday, July 10 and 17. The month of jazz kicks off the day after Canada Day, with Salsa Fest taking over Woodbine Park for the remainder of the long weekend. Performances on Saturday, July 2 include Lucho de Se-

das, the Changui Havana Orquesta and Saul Torres. Performers on Sunday, July 3 include Johannes Lindstead, Mika Sobreira and Chantel Collado. From July 15 to 17, two stages will operate at Woodbine Park. The Friday night highlight is 7Sould and the premiere of the group’s ‘Underneath,’ bringing together live music, dance, acrobatics and a hi-tech light show. Saturday will see R&B singer Ivana Santilli take the main stage, followed by the reggae sounds of Colombia’s De Bruces A Mi. On Sunday, the Paul James Band will play in the late afternoon, warming up the stage for weekend closers the Johnny Rawls Big Band. Meanwhile, the side stage will highlight a capella talents all weekend, starting with Supertonic and The O’Pears on Friday. Saturday’s performers include Countermeasure, led by Beacher John-Michael Erlendson, as well as Duly Noted and Pretty Sharp. Sunday’s lineup includes other groups with an East End connection, including Retrocity, Hampton Avenue Four and FreePlay Duo. The main stage lights up again from July 22 to 24, with hometown reggae group House of David Gang and live dance trio Tortured Soul highlighting the Friday night lineup. Saturday sees jazz singer Dione Taylor, Toronto blues and R&B group Blackburn and Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers perform. Sunday’s lineup closes out the 28th edition of the Beaches International Jazz Festival with festival artistic director Bill King’s Rhythm Express, singer Melanie Durrant, and Ghost Town Blues Band. On the side stage at Woodbine Park, The Jazz Mechanics, Swing Shift Big Band and more will bring swinging sounds to the big band stage on July 22, 23 and 24.

Of course for many Beachers, the main event is StreetFest. This longstanding tradition sees Queen Street shut down for three nights of dancing in the street, from 7 to 11 p.m. on July 21, 22 and 23. This year promises the usual mix of old favourites and exciting newcomers, as locals make plans to either host parties or escape town. Some familiar names at this year’s three-night street party include Samba Squad’s percussion party, Dr. Draw’s acrobatic electric violin playing, blues from the Johnny Max Band, and the funk sounds of KC Roberts & the Live Revolution and Project Phoenix, among many others. For anyone new to the event, bands play several 40-minute sets each night alternating with neighbouring bands, so every other spot features live music at any given time. For the full lineup of performers, set times and events, see beachesjazz.com. Continued on following page

‘One-stop’ mental health clinic opens By Anna Killen
A NEW “one-stop shop” youth-focused mental health and addiction walk-in clinic is set to open its doors at Danforth and Woodbine this July. The clinic is one of three similar clinics opening across the city, with the expectation that a walk-in model tailored to young people’s needs will remove barriers that might stop them from seeking treatment and improve access across the mental health system. Youth mental health and addiction disorder rates are as high as 20 per cent, but only one in six access appropriate treatment, according to program literature. The program, developed by a wide range of partners including CAMH, SickKids Centre for Brain and Mental Health, Michael Garron Hospital, and others under the banner YouthCan Impact Toronto, provides flexibility of services and treatment options on a walk-in basis – brief, solution-focused therapy, peer support, access to Internet-based tools, onsite access to psychiatric services. The young people will be connected

young people receive in hospital-based, outpatient mental health clinics in Toronto, with project leaders anticipating they will see “better outcomes for youth, including improved functioning, decreased symptoms and better satisfaction with the services,” said Dr. Joanna Henderson, clinician scientist and director of the McCain Centre at CAMH, noting that wait times should also decrease. The project was developed with input from young people, who considered what services would be offered and how success will be evaluated. “The thing many people in this field haven’t done is ask young people, ‘what are your goals, what are your needs?’ Without understanding youth experience of mental illness, it’s hard to organize services in an informed way,” says Henderson. “Having youth at the table is crucial to help us ask the right questions and look at outcomes that are meaningful to them.” The group hopes that eventually this service model will be used as a blueprint for other communities across Canada.

STROLL ALONG one of the city’s other waterfronts this summer and you may see a familiar face – or, more precisely, hear a familiar voice. Notre Dame grad and current Centennial College music student Erin Horan is singing with the Waterfront BIA’s Singing Ambassadors this summer. The program features eight talented young people bringing life via song to the central city’s lakeside streets. “It’s a really cool job, actually,” said 20-year-old Horan. The vocal position began in mid-June, and Horan and her seven musical co-workers started their summer stint by serenading the Toronto Artisan Market. They will split into two quartets to sing 10 a capella tunes in busy spots along Queen’s Quay and the surrounding area, as well as helping direct visitors. Horan is studying in Centennial’s Music Industry Arts and Performance program, focusing both on singing – she previously only trained on guitar – and on the business side of the music business. While she has been performing for the past few years, the Ambassador gig offers some experience in the discipline of singing professionally, having to belt out tunes daily while keeping her voice in good shape. Horan’s current plans are to finish her last year of school and find work as a mixing engineer at a recording studio, while also working on her own music, a mix of indie and pop songs. “My hope that I’m slowly inching toward right now is releasing my own album and seeing where that takes me,” she said. While waiting for the album, anyone interested in checking out what the shoreline looks like west of the Beach, and hearing some catchy tunes while they’re at it, can swing by the
central waterfront. The Singing Ambassadors will be performing at various locations and times from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Monday every week this summer.
EAST LYNN Park will host a series of concerts through Erin Horan the month of July. The Danny Loves Music kicks off on Canada Day with the Julian Taylor Band’s alternative soul sounds, with opening act Simone Denny. Following the holiday show, every Wednesday will feature a different artist or group performing. Paul Reddick takes the stage on July 6, with Stephen Stanley on July 13. Byrds! Byrds! Byrds! will play on July 20, and the closing event on July 27 will feature Ted Peters & Gumbo YaYa, with opening act Dirty Dishes. The family-friendly concerts will feature arts and crafts vendors and an adult beverage tent, and is presented by the Danforth Mosaic BIA. See thedanny.ca for more information.

Fringe Festival highlight By Jon Muldoon
IT’S COMMON knowledge that the East End is home to a sizable creative set. If one needed proof, one need look no further than the 2016 Fringe Festival, featuring a wide range of talent from the neighbourhood. The Fringe Festival began in 1989, and plays are chosen entirely by a lottery system – no juries for this fest. This system allows total newcomers to be billed alongside theatre vets, encouraging experimentation among the creators, and spurring a sense of adventure for patrons. Fringe 2016 performances run from June 29 to July 10. For full dates and times of specific shows, and to purchase tickets, see fringetoronto.com. During the festival there will also be a box office in the parking lot behind Honest Ed’s at 581 Bloor St. W. Note that no latecomers are admitted to Fringe shows. Life List
SALE!
Life-long Beacher Alex Eddington is back at Fringe this year stretching the boundaries of traditional theatre. His last appearance in the festival was with his production Yarn in 2013. Life List takes a fitting and novel approach to telling stories through birdwatching: the play takes place on a walking tour through the West End, mixing storytelling, music and, yes, actual birdwatching. The performance aims to mix autobiography with magical realism, according to show creator and performer Eddington. Audience members who don’t bring their own will be supplied with clipboards and binoculars, and the group will set out on an expedition to spot the rare “white robin” in Seaton Village. Before his mother died in 2014 of breast cancer, she passed on her life

list of birds to Eddington, and asked him to keep adding entries. The stories told during Life List vary depending on what birds are actually spotted, but “they all lead back to his mother, his pet bird Spike and the cancer that took them both,” according to press materials. Eddington describes Life List as “a unique site-specific show that uses the quirks of a historic Toronto neighbourhood as its backdrop.” The play is co-directed by Andrew Gaboury and East End resident Tyler Seguin. For more about Life List and Eddington see alexeddington.com. Take note: the play runs rain or shine, so dress for the weather – and bring your binoculars. Knots Beach resident Jake Runeckles is cofounder of Vocative Theatre, and one of two performers in Knots, a performance piece premiering at Fringe. “We call it a theatrical collage as opposed to a play, because we do not follow one storyline,” says Runeckles of Knots. Taking knots as a metaphorical starting point, the piece uses literal knots – from shoe-tying to sailing – to create a piece about the unseen knots in relationships, culture and politics. Performance, movement and original music help Runeckles and Lucy Meanwell tell their story in a non-traditional way. “We maintain that anyone who sees this show will leave with a new appreciation or consideration of these simple twists and turns that tangle us up,” he says. Knots runs at the Factory Theatre Mainspace. Find more information at facebook. com/KnotsFringeTO. How May I Mate You?

Last year the troupe won the Patron’s Pick award at the Robert Gil Theatre during Fringe, and this year they’re back with How May I Mate You?, running at the Theatre Passe Muraille Mainstage. The play focuses on the world of dating and relationships through the lens of a game show. The game format offers “five rounds of non-stop fun (and maybe a little bit of discomfort)” running through rounds and topics such as ‘Calls from Your Mother’, ‘Past Indiscretions’, ‘Twister for 2’ and a ‘sexy lapdance competition’. Naulls wrote How May I Mate You? and also acts alongside Wooldridge. “We have a vested interest in this community because it helped us to develop into who we are today,” writes Naulls, who credits “outstanding teachers and the positive environment” at Notre Dame for helping her develop her passion for drama and the arts. Other performers include Kano Wilkinson, Kelsey Johnston (who also directs), Jon Champagne, Jalen Andre and Roshawn Balgrove. See @poorhouseplays on Twitter for more information. Water Wonders
Street. (The production will be moved into the church if the weather doesn’t cooperate). East Yorker Cheryl McNamara said the play was written as a direct response to a friend who, as something of a biodiversity expert, gave a simple answer to a question from the playwright. “I asked her if she could do one thing to make a difference what it would be. She said: to teach children the importance of nature. I immediately thought of writing a play about a boy’s fight to save it,” she says. This is her third Fringe play, after The Dick’s a Dame, co-written with Jane Moffat, and The Dizzy & Dale Chronicles. All three are in partnership with director Sue Miner. Playing the lead is Beacher Chase Jeffels. This will be his first Toronto Fringe appearance, though he has acted at the Edmonton Fringe and in other local theatre productions. Other actors on the bill are Brenda Kamino, Michelle Langille and Mike Ricci. See facebook.com/WaterWondersFringe for more information. Pirates Don’t Babysit! Upper Beacher Barb Scheer has written her first play for children. Pirates Don’t Babysit! will run as part of this year’s Fringekids Festival. Scheer’s own children’s love of pirates inspired the story, which follows Jenny’s adventures with a band of pirates who show up at her door looking for buried treasure. Jenny agrees to help in exchange for help looking after her baby sister. The show is fit for the whole family, and offers a fun time with some bumbling pirates helping keep the baby happy. The pirates are played by played by Carl Bauer, Jamie Johnson, Jesse Perreault and Hilary Wilson. The ‘baby’ is played by Jaclyn Nobrega, while Carina Cojeen plays mom. The role of Jenny is played by Scheer’s 9-year-old daughter Olivia Harms, who also provided inspiration for the character. Pirates Don’t Babysit! runs at the George Ignatie Theatre. See facebook.com/PiratesDont-Babysit for more information.
Water Wonders is being billed as Fringe’s first ever outdoor production for young audiences (ages 8 and up). The play tells the story of one boy’s love of nature and his fight to preserve it. One of the unique aspects of Fringe is its embracing of site-specific performances, and Water Wonders is one such play – the show happens in the garden courtyard of St. George the MarBeacher Chase Jeffels, left, and Mike Ricci tyr Church on John in ‘Water Wonders’.

Berry season is a sweet treat Jan Main is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@yahoo.ca

trawberries are ready just in time for Canada’s birthday. (Perhaps we should have a strawberry on the flag - they are certainly one of the most popular fruits.) If you are a die-hard picker, one who is out in the field on the first day and several more times during the picking season, you will have an abundance of this luscious, seductive fruit to enjoy, first, picked in the hand, then in pies, tarts, muffins, jam, and plenty left over to freeze for winter enjoyment. With all this sunshine, the berries should be especially sweet. There is no better way to capture the sweetness of the berries than to use them as soon after they are picked as possible, either in a recipe or frozen for future enjoyment. Easy preserving If you are lucky enough to have an abundance of strawberries, freeze them for future use. They keep well for up to a year and can be used in pies, crisps, muffins or even in preserving recipes. Consider making strawberry
jam in the winter for a renewed taste of summer. To freeze, simply wash in cool water, remove hulls, pat dry with a towel and arrange berries in a single layer on parchment paper-lined baking sheets. Freeze until hard (four hours or overnight) then pack in freezer bags, filling each with 4 to 6 cups (1 to 1-1/2 L) berries. Date and label each bag. Return to freezer ready for a future recipe.
ment paper and weight with several cups of rice to bake pastry blind (that is to bake a pastry without a filling, but weighted so that it does not bubble up). Bake until a pale golden colour, about 15 minutes. Using both hands, gently remove parchment paper and empty used rice into jar for future pastries. Discard parchment paper. Cool pastry on rack.
Orange shortbread pastry
This filling will be sublime with any berry, sliced plums or peaches later in the season. Mascarpone cheese is a high fat cheese with a mild, rich taste ideal for fruit, available in the cheese section of the supermarket. 1 cup (250 mL) 8 oz mascarpone cheese or cream cheese 1/3 cup (80 mL) sifted icing sugar 1 tbsp (15 mL) grated orange rind 6 cups (1-1/2 L) fresh strawberries or other seasonal berry or fruit Sprigs of mint While pastry is cooling, beat cheese, sugar and rind together until smooth. Spread evenly over bottom of cooled pastry. Cover and refrigerate. For best results, pastry should be made and served the same day. Berries taste best at room temperature. Spoon berries into pie and garnish with mint just before serving. Makes six mouth-watering servings. Happy Canada Day!
This recipe is designed for those intimidated by the very thought of making homemade pastry. It takes virtually minutes with never-fail results and no rolling. 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) all-purpose flour 2 tbsp (30 mL) granulated sugar 1 tbsp (15 mL) grated orange rind 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/2 cup (125 mL) cold butter Pre-heat oven to 400°F (200°C). Spray a 9-inch spring-form pan with baking spray or a 10-inch pie plate with baking spray. In a mixing bowl, stir together flour, sugar, rind and salt using a fork. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut butter into pastry mixture until the size of a small crumb. Press crumbs over the bottom and ½ inch (1.5 cm) up the side of pan. On the Wild Side
A tale of caution in the wilds of the city Ann Brokelman is an avid birder and nature photographer naturephotosbyann.blogspot.ca
A
ccording to my son it was Alfred Lord Tennyson who once described nature as “red in tooth and claw,” referring to the savage and merciless conflict of surviving in the wild. Though I admit it may not be as poetic, in my humble opinion, Tennyson should have added that nature was “red in tooth, claw, and WING.” What on earth am I talking about? The other day I was taking a walk through a park when ‘Wham!’ – I was hit on the back of the head. I thought at first that maybe I’d been hit by a tennis ball thrown by a little hooligan, but just a few moments later I was hit again. What was going on? As I turned in circles I noticed movement in the nearby cattails – a flash of black and red wings – and then I was making a very quick exit from the area. I was bonked one more time before I moved far enough away from the hidden nest of a very irritated red-winged black bird (Agelaius phoeniceus). Though the back of my head was bruised, I still smiled at the tenacity of this tough little bird. I have seen these little guys (about the size of a robin) attack red-tailed hawks, relentlessly striking them until they leave the area. I really think the city should put up signs that say “Beware of Red-Winged Blackbirds.”
PHOTOS: ANN BROKELMAN
Red-winged blackbirds are raising their young, above, around this time of year. The birds can act very aggressively to protect their nests – to both humans and other birds who stray too close to their homes, below.
If you’re walking at Ashbridges Bay, take a look among the cattail stalks and see if you can spot the birds. You can usually identify them quickly … they are the black birds with, as you might expect, a lot of red on their wings. Please heed this warning: if the fledglings (baby birds taking their first flight) are actively trying to leave the nest, both parents will aggressively make sure you don’t get too close. Nests are found close to the water

among the reeds and cattails. You probably won’t even know the fledging red-winged babies are there until you’re under attack. I never intentionally get too close, but sometimes the birds nest within metres of a walking trail. If I’m ever hit I move away quickly and try to spot the nest from a distance. Look for the babies hanging onto the cattails or nearby small branches. They should be constantly calling for their parents to bring them food. Red-winged blackbirds make a throaty check noise as well as a high slurred terr-eeee whistle. If you’ve ever seen a big bird of prey such as a red-tailed hawk, crow or turkey vulture in the sky being followed and attacked by a small black bird, chances are it is a red-winged blackbird doing the chasing. I’ve even watched a pair of swans come too close to a blackbird’s nest and get hit repeatedly on the head and back. Please watch them and admire their devotion to their chicks, but never antagonize them on purpose. We often forget how stressful our presence must be. Have you been attacked by the redwinged blackbirds? Do you have any interesting wildlife or bird activity at your home? Please email and tell me about it: abrokelman@gmail.com.

very year when the warm season arrives and flowers, shrubs, and fruit trees bloom and provide nectar and pollen for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other insects, often-feared and misunderstood little yellow and black ‘buzzers’ start arriving too. The differences between “the birds, the bees, and the butterflies” are surely obvious, but do you know who’s who when it comes to bees, wasps and their kin? One misnomer I hear cried out often – mostly in a panic – is, “Bee! Bee!”, generally accompanied by wild flapping of the arms. No need to insult bees when you are in fact panicking about a wasp. Here are some clues on how to tell what’s what. First, not every flying insect that has yellow and black stripes is a bee. In fact, there are several insect species that look quite similar. Bumblebees, honey bees, wasps, yellowjackets and hornets all display variations of yellow and black stripes. How on earth to tell them apart? Bumblebees are my favourite! There are 50 known species in North America, with sizes ranging from 1 to 3 cm. Bumblebees are plump with no defined waistline, very hairy, and have thicker legs and a more rounded “bottom” (honestly, I’m talking about bumblebees here!). They have fewer stripes, which can be either yellow or more orange and black. They nest underground and when they fly they seem to be bumbling leisurely, but with great intent, from flower to flower, seeking nectar and pollen. Even though they can sting multiple times, bumblebees rarely sting and only when threatened – for example, by a giant human swatting at them. Yellowjackets and European paper wasps are two species of wasp. Worldwide there are some 30,000 wasp species! Wasps range up to almost 4 cm in size, and yellowjackets are the more aggressive of our North American species. Here is where you want to watch yourself and young children. They are likely the ones you see flying around garbage cans or dropped pop cans or cups – they like it sweet. Be very mindful of drinks (especially pop cans), popsicles and ice cream. Always look at your food before you bite into it or take that next sip! Wasps typically start appearing in mid to late summer. They don’t have any visible body hair, are more yellow than black – you’ll see more yellow as they buzz around you and your food – and have a noticeable thin waist and pointed rear end. That is where their painful stinger sits. Yellowjackets and other wasps can sting multiple times, so avoid swatting at them repeatedly – that will make them more aggressive and more likely to sting. If a wasp wants your food or drink, move away, and cover up food sitting on your picnic table. Yellowjackets often nest underground in rodent burrows, so beware, gardeners! Paper wasps nest above ground. Equally aggressive are hornets. They are related to yellowjackets, can grow up to about 3 cm, also have a distinct waistline, and have no noticeable body hair. They nest above ground. Again, they don’t normally sting unless provoked, but some people can have an allergic reaction to their venom if stung. The first and last time I saw a hornet, though, was decades ago in Germany. That one was huge. My father

sent us kids indoors to safety and chased it off with a can of insect spray. Lastly, honey bees. They are typically ‘gentle’ – again, unless threatened – and are the hard working insects that provide us with delicious honey and fill a vital role as food pollinators. There are some highly aggressive bees, such as Africanized bees, which have – so far – come no further north than the southern US. Honey bees have dull yellow or even brownish and black stripes, have some body fuzz, and are smaller than bumblebees or wasps (0.5 to 1.5 cm). They nest in cavities, such as beekeepers’ boxes or hollowed-out tree trunks. A honey bee can sting only once because its stinger detaches and stays in its victim, thereby killing the bee – so it really doesn’t want to sting anyone if it can help it. In the past few years there have been many reports on a sharp and disturbing decline of or collapse of honey bee colonies in Canada and other countries. Many point the finger at insecticidal neonicotinoids (or ‘neonics’), while others say mites are killing the honey bees. To cover this topic appropriately, I would need a whole separate article (I might tackle it in a future column). For now, I will just say that insect pollinators are amazing! They are responsible for the pollination – and therefore the success of harvests – of a third of human food, with honey bees providing an impressive 70 per cent of that ‘work’. A study by the Parliament of Canada called The Importance of Bee Health to Sustainable Food Production in Canada estimates the annual value of bee pollination in Canada at $2 billion, and US $200 billion worldwide. his July 1 at 1 p.m., I will lead a historic walk starting at our historic Beach library at Queen Street East and Lee Avenue. The theme of the walk will be the historic people and places of the Beach, the 150th birthday of Canada next year and historic plaques that identify the history of our area. The Beach and East Toronto Historical Society has helped bring historic plaques to many different locations, marking the places and people who were involved in historic events. Any history you might think is appropriate, we will look at all aspects of your requests for plaques, to be done in association with the Toronto Historic Board, an agency of the City of Toronto. For example, when we start our walk it will be in front of a historic plaque outside the Beaches Public Library. This plaque has been researched and on it is the brief history of the library (this year is its 100th anniversary). There will be an official ceremony to mark the installation of the plaque in October with librarian and history author Barb Myrvold, myself, and other members of BETHS speaking about the library and our area. There are other historic plaques in the area. One is at the Beach Hebrew Institute, also known as the Beach Synagogue, on the east side of Kenilworth Avenue just south of Queen. It tells the story of the Jewish community organizing to build its own house of worship beginning in 1919-1920. This is one of the oldest synagogues in the city and is recognized on the historic plaque put there in 1982 by then-mayor Art Eggleton. There is a plaque on Lee south of Queen on the west side telling the story of a great Beach physician, Dr.

Young, who spent his life helping the people of the Beach and died while treating young soldiers after the First World War. We have a plaque for one of the greatest pianists who ever lived, on the west side of Southwood Drive, north of Willliamson Road. Glenn Gould was born and raised and went to school in the Beach. His reputation as a master of his instrument remains to this day. We had many amusement parks on our shoreline over the past 140 years. There is a plaque at the bottom of Scarborough Beach Boulevard that gives us an account of one of our great parks. It was aptly called Scarboro Beach Amusement Park, and operated from 1907 to 1925. The plaque tells the story of the park, its original boardwalk, the midway, ‘Shoot the Chutes’, one of the first public airplane events in 1909 and other historic notes. This, again, is not to be missed. One of our newest plaques is at 30 Lee Ave., on the west side just north of the boardwalk. It describes the Kew Williams House, the home of the youngest son of Joe Williams, who built our famed Kew Gardens. The house was built in 1902 by Kew for his bride, and the plaque gives a brief history of the house and the area. This again was installed through the efforts of BETHS and Heritage Toronto. One of the most important plaques in the East End was put up by the Ontario government with different historical societies including BETHS. This plaque is devoted to the Ashbridge family, who were some of the first settlers to come to the area and start a community. The plaque tells the story of the Ashbridges who arrived in the 1790s and were important contributors to the area. The family later donated the house and land to the

people of the area under the auspices of the Ontario Heritage Foundation. It is located at 1444 Queen St. E. There is another plaque located at the present St. John’s Norway Church and cemetery, on the northwest corner of Kingston Road and Woodbine Avenue. It states the original name – St. John’s Berkeley. The land was given to the Anglican Church around 1850 by a wealthy land owner of the East End, to be used as a cemetery and church. I will hold a walk later this year at the cemetery to commemorate this historic place. The ‘Norway Plaque’ across the street on Kingston Road tells the story of the hamlet of Norway that housed a toll gate, several taverns and one of our first post offices. The date was 1866, making it older than Canada. Another plaque on Balsam Avenue on the east side to one of our wellknown artists, William Kurelek, who lived on Balsam Avenue on the east side north of Balmy Beach School. Kurelek was well known for his paintings and sketches of the Beach and surrounding area. As I have written in previous issues, I cannot recommend too highly to everyone to get involved in our sesquicentennial birthday of our great country. Schools, churches, mosques, children, adults, organizations, businesses: please share your thoughts and ideas. I will write again on the 150th birthday of our great country, but we need your ideas – anything that you might think to be important or historically relevant.

MPAC assessments are in
A
s we look forward to is a well-known and respected what is being Beach real estate agent predicted to be a hot tneal@trebnet.com and dry summer, the 416-690-5100 page turns on what was a hot and dry spring real estate market in our beautiful Beach neighbourhood. We experienced a further escalation in home prices these last three months, hitting new highs in sale values that continue to soar to levels that are really quite surprising. That’s the hot side. The dry side was the continuing low inventory of homes for sale in the Beach, which, in tandem with steady low interest rates, have helped and encouraged these record high sale prices. If you’re selling in this market, it’s been fantastic, especially for those who are moving up, since there’s a glut of buyers eager to purchase their homes. But at the same time, there’s more move-up buyers than product, thus the bidding wars have invariably moved into the upper price range. It could be described as a vicious cycle. Even if you’re not actively participating in the Beach real estate market, if you’re a property owner (or even to some extent a tenant) this escalation in property values has impacted you directly – and the proof was delivered in the mail this past May courtesy of the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation. I would guess that there were more than a few homeowners who opened the envelope to find their property assessment had increased quite dramatically. The new property Current Value Assessments are dated from January 1, 2016, which has spared (for the time being) Beach properties from being assessed using sales figures from this latest spring run-up in prices. Still, if you’ve been attentive over the last few years, you probably have mixed emotions about these latest assessments. On one hand you may fear that your property taxes will increase excessively, especially if you’re on a fixed income. Your other reaction might be disbelief that your home is worth even close to what the assessment states. Believe it or not, it’s likely pretty close. In fact, the way the Beach market is churning, your value (if you were to sell on the MLS system) is likely more – way more – than the MPAC valuation. Or you may have reacted with a wry smile and tucked the assessment notice in the drawer, quietly knowing that you’ve managed to slip under MPAC’s radar with a lower assessment than you believe it should be. MPAC’s four-year phase-in program will diffuse the sticker shock initially, and it’s the annual mill rate set by City Council that is the key to how much you’ll pay in property taxes. Your taxes aren’t about to double, but they will increase. I wrote a couple columns in this paper about MPAC’s valuations way back in 2003 when they first started, and I helped many Beachers gather information and present a case against MPAC’s often wrong initial property assessments. MPAC had growing pains with that new assessment system, often changing their own criteria as to what contributed to value. Their “Assessment Experts” slowly learned the quirkiness of local real estate, and it seems MPAC has tweaked their local analysis to fit into our neighbourhood. The latest criteria that MPAC is using to calculate 85 per cent of their CVAs are based on five factors that are standard pillars of real estate valuations: location, living area, age of property, lot dimensions and quality of construction. MPAC doesn’t list how much weight each factor contributes, but I think it’s fair to say MPAC is finally getting its research in order. These increased valuations have spread out to all corners of Toronto, and thus should spread the pain around. But there’s no getting around the fact the Beach is one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in our fair city, and the dirt under our sandals will continue to be seen as very valuable. And why not? Take a minute and think about it: We live in a pretty fantastic city in a terrific part of a great country. And our little corner of the city is just outstanding! Why wouldn’t people from all over the world want to live here? Of course, the way our real estate prices are increasing, being world-class will bring with it a different set of prob-
lems. And housing affordability and world-class property assessments may very well be on that list. If you do have questions about your property assessment, I’m happy to speak with you free of charge and see if there’s a case to lower your assessment. Call my office at 416-6905100, or email to tneal@trebnet.com. Have a great summer!
