COMMUNITY CENTRE 55 is looking for volunteers to help out at the Good Friday Easter Egg Hunt in Kew Gardens. The event is in need of face painters to create designs for children such as bunny faces and any other Easter-related art. The annual egg hunt will be held on Friday, April 19 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. at 97 Main Street. This is the second annual Eas-
ter egg hunt at Kew Gardens. This year’s event will feature free face painting, children’s entertainment, lots of chocolate and an agegrouped egg hunt with a visit from the Easter bunny. Entertainment will also feature Juno-award winning group Sonshine and Broccoli, along with a performance from Peppa Pig. Centre 55’s special events and volunteer coordinator, Jade Maitland, added how special the event will be.
“It’s a unique event and a great location,” Maitland said. “It will also be one of the largest and best Easter egg hunt events in the city.” The event is organized by Lido Chilelli, who also organizes the Beaches Jazz Festival. He said this will be something children will be looking forward to. “I definitely think it will be like Disneyland in the Beach,” Chilelli said. Those interested in volunteering as a face painter can contact Maitland at jade@centre55.com

Donna Lynn Watson, who opened the Healthy Earth Bilingual Nursery School in the Beach in 1992, will be retiring at the end of this school year. The school began in a space at St. Aidan’s Church and moved to its present location at 2206 Queen St. E. in 2006.
Healthy Earth school founder and director Donna Watson set to retire after 27 years By Rushanthi Kesunathan
HEALTHY EARTH school is closing its doors and saying goodbye to the community after 27 years in the Beach. Donna Lynn Watson, founder and director of Healthy Earth Bilingual Nursery School, opened the school in 1992. She was motivated to teach young children more than just play, but also to teach them about the environment and its purpose. When you enter the doors, you’ll immediately be filled with a sense of warmth and positive atmosphere.
Here, its youngest learners not only get a head start in learning but a second home. And, they’re not just taking big leaps toward academic learning, but in life. They’re learning to ask questions and fundraising to help others. Before opening the school, Watson was an actor and director who appeared in television commercials and small community theatre plays in a private New York theatre company. “I worked with very young children in New York. I was directing them, teaching them how to memorize lines, and think critically,” Watson said. “I understood the
power of teaching children through theatre.” Early childhood education is powerful and children are capable of learning way more than what adults give them credit for, she said. After returning to Canada, Watson went back to school to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education. She then started working at various schools in the Beach and realized she wasn’t teaching children the way she hoped to. It didn’t fit her philosophy of childhood education, she said. “I was seeing that other schools
strictly were play-based and only some learning was involved but not in the way I wanted to see them learn,” Watson said. So, Watson naturally branched out and opened up Healthy Earth School at St. Aidan’s Church before moving to her current location (2206 Queen St. E.) in 2006. The school began as a nursery, and within six months expanded into a private Kindergarten after its young children showed an eagerness to learn reading, writing and solving math problems, she said. “We also started teaching about Continued on Page 5
THE CITY of Toronto hosted the second community meeting for the Main Street Planning Study recently, and concerns about how the new developments will impact the neighbourhood was at the forefront of the discussion. Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford kicked off the March 4 presentation, referring to the proposed east Danforth plan as “the first cut of ideas” in the “heart of the community”. The area of study is approximately 28 hectares, or according the City of Toronto, 28 sports fields, that sits roughly from Main Street and Danforth Avenue, south to Gerrard Street, with borders at Dawes Road and Ted Reeve Drive on the east side. More than 75 people attended the meeting at Hope United Church, and some community members wanted to know how the city is going to address traffic congestion, lack of affordable housing and sewage issues that proposed development to the area will bring. One resident said that increased traffic resulting from new developments in the area is “not feasible” with Main Street being only one traffic lane in each direction. The current “extreme traffic conditions” have resulted in traffic jams and speeding cars from Gerrard Street and Woodbine Avenue, up to Danforth Avenue, the resident said. Other residents wanted to know what is being done about sewage issues causing flooding around Stephenson Park and surrounding Continued on Page 4

A WOMAN and a man were treated for minor smoke inhalation after a fire at a three-storey apartment building on the southeast corner of Willow Avenue and Queen Street East in the Beach Wednesday afternoon. They were treated at the scene by paramedics. Toronto firefighters were called to the fire at the Royal Oak apartment building at 2401 Queen St. E. at approximately 4:15 p.m. on March 13. When firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke and visible flames coming from a basement apartment at the front of the building. According to Toronto Fire Services the building had already been “self-evacuated” and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Fire crews then cleared the building of smoke using “positive-pressure ventila-

Toronto firefighters deal with a basement apartment fire at a building at Queen Street East and Willow Avenue last Wednesday afternoon. A man and a woman suffered minor smoke inhalation injuries in the fire.
Metro News know this week that the renewed petition can be accessed by visiting www.triggerchange.ca A previous petition sponsored by Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz had been available to be signed until March 2. The renewed petition was started on March 5 and is sponsored by Toronto-Danforth MP Julie Dabrusin. It can be signed until 11:30 a.m. on July 3. Fallon was out with a group of friends on the evening of July 22 celebrating
the 18th birthday of her friend Noor Samiei and they were eating ice cream in a crowded Alexander the Great Parkette when a man began shooting. Police flooded the area and briefly exchanged gunfire with shooter Faisal Hussain, who shortly afterwards turned his gun on himself and took his own life. That gun, a .40 calibre handgun, was originally owned legally and stolen a number of years ago in Saskatchewan.
Family members and victims of the shooting held an emotional press conference on Feb. 22 to mark the sevenmonth anniversary of the shooting and to call for the ban on the private ownership of handguns in Canada. The renewal of the Parliamentary petition is part of the process, Price told the Beach Metro News in an interview on March 8. “We want to have people go to triggerchange.ca and to sign the petition,” Price said.

During Trudeau’s speech, Gray threw her flag and shouted “No Justice on Stolen Native Land.” Seconds later, an older white man, in a blue shirt, pushed her down to the floor. “Shocked, but not deterred I rose up and continued to speak, ‘No Justice on Stolen Native Land.’ I said this over and over until security pulled me from the rally,” she wrote in her statement. While Gray was quickly escorted out, the man, who is yet to be identified, remained inside the event and continued to cheer Trudeau on. In a video taken during the event, Trudeau can be
seen witnessing the scuffle and uttering “Oh boy, oh boy,” moments after Gray is pushed to the ground. Gray has been speaking up against environmental violence for eight years. She and her lawyer Nick Cake, with Millars Law, are considering her legal options. Cake said they are in a preliminary stage and are reviewing all options and working to determine the best possible path. “Our options include filing a police report because police didn’t take any action on that day. Another avenue will be civil remedies that may be available. Another would be to leverage a conversation between Vanessa
and the prime minister’s office,” he said. “Situations like this have a way of fizzling off and falling off into the background and essentially being forgotten about. It’s our intention to keep this fresh and to keep it going so it does not become outdated or a situation that lacks the public’s interest,” Cake said. In an email statement, Liberal Party spokesperson Parker Lund said the safety of all Canadians attending such events is a top priority and that the incident has been brought to their attention. The party is taking steps to review the matter with the appropriate authorities and staff, Lund said.

A PROTESTING First Nations woman who was pushed to the ground during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Climate Action Rally at the Danforth Music Hall on March 4, says the prime minister “witnessed” her being assaulted, and “did nothing.” The woman is 26-year-old Vanessa Gray, a community organizer from the Aamjiwnaang First Nation. In a press release written a few days after the incident, Gray said it is disturbing that many of the people who attended the event, including Trudeau himself, did nothing. At the event, Trudeau was interrupted several times during his speech by hecklers and protestors in the crowd, who were immediately ushered out by security. Gray said she went to ensure that the voices of Indigenous people were present and draw attention to the ongoing colonial and environmental violence that indigenous people experience in Canada. Before arriving at the event, Gray hid a Canadian flag in her shirt that said, “No Justice on Stolen Native Land.” She said it was to remind those at the event that ground zero of environmental violence is occurring right now on unceded land. This artist’s conception shows the new Dawes Road connection to the Danforth GO station proposed as part of the Main Street Planning Study. Study, he continued, leverages the existing transit infrastructure in the area to create growth, which includes a mix of residential and employment land uses that are supported by transit accessibility, new public spaces and improved community services and facilities, along with increased pedestrian walkability in the area.
The new development is already in-line with an existing City of Toronto policy to protect the current affordable rental stock and create new affordable family-sized and single units in the neighbourhood, he said. Woolfson added that the city shares results of the report to the Toronto District School Board.

As for current traffic safety and sewage issues, Woolfson directed community members to address those issues with their city councillor. After the first community consultation meeting on June 13, 2018, the city collected the following feedback from the community: • Provide a diverse mix of land uses (particularly small business and employment opportunities); • More medical offices; • New developments should be sensitive to surrounding low-rise neighbourhoods; • Provide mix of affordable housing (family-sized and rental units); • A need for additional community services and facilities; • Improve integration and access between TTC and GO stations; • Improve pedestrian safety, particularly at Main Street and Stephenson Avenue intersection; • Preserve the history in the area. The feedback from the first meeting was developed into the new framework and key features for the proposed plan were established including: • New building development for residential and business; • Heights: midrise buildings to limit shadowing on new and existing public parks and neighbourhoods; • A private lane to provide access to the building at 6 Dawes Rd., may be located underground in integrated development with GO station and Main Square recreation centre; • New public parks and open green spaces; • A new pedestrian connection from north of Danforth Avenue (Coleman Park) to the GO station and beyond to Ted Reeve Park. After feedback from this framework is collected, city staff will start specifying building heights and location sizes of public parks and midblock connections. Once that is complete, the city will present its findings at a third community consultation meeting. The time and date for the meeting is yet to be announced. The Main Street Planning Study began in November of 2017. The city said the purpose of the study is to provide policy direction on how to intensify the Main and Danforth neighbourhood. Residents can submit their feedback to Woolfson at Daniel.woolfson@toronto.ca or George Pantazis, Planner, at George.pantazis@toronto. ca.

State of Queen Street East key topic at community meeting hosted by Councillor Bradford By Alan Shackleton
THE STATE of Queen Street East in the Beach was a key topic of discussion at a community meeting hosted by Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford recently. The evening meeting on March 5 was held at Beach United Church and attended by about 50 people. Guest speakers were Alexandra Vamos, manager of shelter planning and housing for the City of Toronto; Mike Major, manager of business improvement for the city; and Anna Sebert, Beach Village BIA co-ordinator. Since the meeting was held at a church located at Wineva Avenue and Queen Street East, it was no surprise Sebert’s presentation generated lots of talk about vacant stores and busincess challenges in the area. Sebert said the Beach Village BIA, which covers Queen Street East from Neville Park Boulevard to Lockwood Road, is undertaking a a number of initiatives to address those challenges. “It’s to address empty storefronts and vacant businesses,” she said. “We are trying to understand what our businesses and landlords are facing.” The BIA’s Master Plan for 2019 will focus on four areas, said Sebert. They are grants for events; parkettes at Lee and Hammersmith; a Business Recruitment Program and wayfinding for visitors. The BIA is aiming to make sure the many people who visit the lakeshore know there are lots of stores and restaurants on Queen Street East just north of the water.
The Beach Village BIA also aims to connect business people looking for space with those who have the spaces, Sebert said. An audience member pointed out some stores on Queen Street East have been vacant for more than 20 years, and wondered how that could be and how it could be changed. Both Sebert and Bradford said a number of factors including landlords who are seeking high rents and the way in which the properties are taxed play a role in that situation. Market Value Assessment and how it taxes commercial properties based on their development potential rather than their present state was identified as a contributor to high taxes on commercial properties. The example was given of a two-storey building on Queen Street East being assessed for its potential to be developed into a fourstorey condo. The idea of having Queen Street East in the Beach declared as a cultural or creative hub, which might make it eligible for a special status to reduce the rise in both assessed values and taxes to be paid, was suggested as a possible solution. After the meeting, Bradford said he would support initiatives that help the area. “Local businesses are the backbone of our community,” he said in a statement. “Since the election I’ve been working closely with local Business Improvement Areas (BIA’s) and city staff to look at everything from small beautification projects to the big policy actions to
keep our main streets thriving. “In 2017 the City of Toronto created a separate ‘creative hubs’ tax class for properties that house nonprofits and other creative organizations. That class remains focussed on the non-profit sector, however I would be eager to support any initiative that can help Queen Street stay affordable for businesses and a centre of our community.” The presentation by Vamos looked homelessness in the city, its causes and ways to help. She said the need for shelter for refugees is growing and the city is reaching capacity in many of its facilities. “Refugees are often families and we don’t want children in shelters,” she responded to a question. “We’re working on it, but it’s pretty complicated.” She said about 22 per cent of those who are homeless in Toronto would be considered “chronic”. The rest are people who have found themselves in situations where they can no longer afford housing. These people desperately need access to affordable housing, said Vamos. “There’s a misconception that people who are homeless don’t want housing. They want housing.” The presentation by Major looked at ways the city can helping revitalize main street areas across Toronto. “What are small businesses facing and what kind of programs can we offer small, independent businesses because main streets live and die with small, independent businesses,” he said.

In My Opinion
Spring is in the air and it’s time for the Beach to celebrate Alan Shackleton Beach Metro News Editor SPRING IS almost here, and with it the Beach and surrounding areas will really start to shine with festivals, parades, fireworks, fun runs and more. While we officially welcome the arrival of spring on March 20 (Yes, that’s tomorrow folks!) at 5:58 p.m., we still can’t entirely say winter is over as we’ve still got snow banks and cold temperatures. But now that the snow, ice and
cold winds aren’t as fierce, this would be a good time, if you have not done so yet, to visit the Winter Stations art installations on display at Woodbine Beach until Monday, April 1. The theme for this year’s Winter Stations was Migration and it resulted in some powerful works of art from around the world put on display in our own neighbourhood. In our March 5 edition of Beach Metro News, historian and columnist Gene Domagala was inspired by the Forest of Butterflies installation by Luis Hernandez of Mexico. It prompted Gene to share with our readers the story of Dr. Fred Urquhart who grew up in the Beach and was instrumental along with his
wife Norah in discovering the winter home of the Monarch butterfly in Mexico. The installations have also led to lots of discussion and thoughts about the life-and-death challenges being faced by people in migration, especially refugees, as can be seen in the letter to the editor on this page. I was able to experience the impact of the Winter Stations art in action earlier this month when I covered the Citizenship Court ceremony held at the Kew Beach Lawn Bowling Club on March 6. At that ceremony, our community welcomed 27 new Canadians and those in attendance reflected on
the migrations that they had made to become citizens of our country. After the ceremony, some of the new citizens headed down to the lake for a tour of the Winter Stations installations and to pose for pictures. For me, it was a moment that made me feel proud to be a Canadian; that we live in a country that is welcoming to others and considered a beacon of freedom, tolerance and opportunity around the world. Too often, we seem to forget just how great a country Canada is and how fortunate we are to live here. Sometimes it takes an opportunity to see our country through the eyes of others to realize this.
And now, with the snow disappearing, let’s think about spring and what a busy and fun April we’re going to be having locally. First up is the Beaches Spring Sprint on Saturday, April 6, a 32year tradition that benefits the Beaches Recreation Centre. And after that, it’s the big one – the Toronto Beaches Lions Club Easter Parade on Sunday, April 21. Easter can come late some years, as it is this time, or as early as the end of March but this is the event that truly says spring has arrived. This was a tough winter, but it’s on the way out. And if you needed more proof, the Blue Jays home opener is March 28.

Local students’ work Safe walk home from Winter Stations had inspires thoughts of reader thinking of those not as fortunate robotics and nature As you have reported in some recent editions of the Beach Metro News, the students at Bowmore Public School, Glen Ames Senior Public School and The Cube Design and Technology School have all done impressively well with their robotics teams. Young people are certainly our hope for the future, and they are learning about things which their parents and grandparents never even knew about. It was also very inspiring to read in the Clean Energy Heroes column about the students at Adam Beck Junior Public School who are mak-
ing the environment a priority. I was recently told that there is a way to use robots to plant trees. If so, a lot more trees could be planted in a much shorter time, without all the hard work. More trees would mean more oxygen to breathe, more birds and, if fruit and nut trees are planted, more food security for the future. I wonder if this would be a good way to combine robotics with caring for the environment.

Saturday afternoon, Feb. 23, was when we decided to take our first walk to the beach to see all the Winter Stations. The weather was reasonable except for the fierce wind that was exceptionally strong by the edge of the lake. We were impressed by all the thoughtful installations with the theme about migration. I liked the colourful cut-outs of people and as we looked at our reflections in the mirror at the centre of the Cavalcade exhibit it occurred to me that if good fortune was not on our side we could be among them. The Above The Wall that is wood on one side and rusty corrugated metal on the other with a bridge going from one side to the other made me sad as I thought of all the people and wildlife who will be severely impacted by the proposed extensions to the American border wall dividing the U.S.A. from Mexico.

The Cavalcade art installation is part of Winter Stations on Woodbine Beach. It was on the short walk back to our warm, comfortable home, braced against the wind, that I felt most deeply for all those who suffer as they leave on their long migrations in a desperate
search for work, to flee from violence in their homeland or to escape environmental disasters as they dream of a new place to call home. Sharman Wilson

THE POPULAR Scarborough Seedy Saturday and Green Fair returns for its 10th year on March 30. This year’s event features more than 50 displays including the Seed Swap in which participants can bring their seeds to trade, organic and heirloom seed vendors, flower and garden associations, nature, park and eco booths. Also, Park People will be hosting their annual Scarborough Park Forum. A key part of the fair includes the gardening workshops. There are three this year – two of which are being headed by local residents. The first workshop at 1 p.m. is Grow Without A Garden hosted by author Lara Lucretia Mrosovsky, a resident of Birch Cliff. Mrosovsky just spent the past year writing her book Grow Without a Garden: 101 Plants for Containers. Just released, the book is a companion to her previous title An Illustrated Guide to Growing Food on your Balcony. Mrosovsky was in-
spired to write this book as a support for all those, especially apartment dwellers, who lack access to a garden and have a keen interest in growing. This book provides information on how to grow 101 various plants in containers with details including container size, spacing, first planting, last planting, transplants , bloom time, light, watering, soil and more. In compiling the book, Mrosovsky acknowledged the help that she received. “There was a huge community of support – from mentoring, to suggestions, to editing, to consulting and to proofreading.” She pointed out that key ideas came from the volunteers that she works with at Access Alliance on the Danforth – where she co-ordinates the rooftop garden. “Because of Access Alliance being so multicultural I have learned more about multicultural food plants - this is a book for a diverse Toronto.” If you miss her presentation, she will have a table at the fair all day. At 2 p.m., Upper Beach resident Virginie Gysel from SPOTT gardens landscape design and Leila Mires-
kandari from Urban Guilds Permaculture will present Bringing Nature Home and Permaculture in your Backyard. The presentation will explain how to design and landscape your gardens so that they are beautiful, provide you with fruit and vegetables and most importantly support biodiversity. “We will present a new way of looking at your garden” said Gysel. “It is about our personal ecology – planting native plants but also ones that can feed you.” She calls it Ecoscaping and Foodscaping. Gysel is well known locally as the creator of the St. Saviours Church Urban Orchard and Garden. With the help of the church and neighbourhood volunteers she transformed a grassy patch into a pollinator paradise and a fruit and vegetable food garden. She is also a founding member of TreeMobile – a not-for-profit group that sells and plants fruit trees, shrubs and vines. Sold at subsidized prices, all profits go towards supporting urban orchards and community gardens through the Edible Garden Grant. For more on the grant, visit www.transi-
tiontreemobile.org Mireskandari and Gysel will both have a display at the fair. The final workshop at 3 p.m. will be of great interest to gardeners and Scarborough residents. The Toronto Region and Conservation Authority will present Beautiful Native Plants and The Meadoway in the Hydro Corridors. Those attending can learn about the inspiring beauty and practical benefits of gardening with native plants. You will leave with the knowhow to create a natural oasis that will enhance your property and benefit local wildlife and pollinators! And you will also learn about the exciting plans for a pollinator friendly corridor on hydro lands (and how your native plant garden can support this ). The Scarborough Seedy Saturday and Green Fair goes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is being held at the Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, 100 Brimley Rd. S., just south of Kingston Road. The Main Menu
Escape to Mexico with this lime and tortilla soup recipe Jan Main is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@yahoo.ca
It may be almost spring but winter persists. This means you need to make an escape to somewhere, anywhere with warmth, sun and blue skies. As a Canadian snow bird, you may be able to make a quick exit to a warmer clime. However, if work and duty rules, a trip away may not be possible. However, tantalizing memories of this soup served often in various guises across Mexico may transport you to this tantalizing country and happy memories.
Lime and Tortilla Soup
All the flavours of Mexico are here: the heat of chili, the tang of lime and sweet of corn, all are evocative of Mexican crops.
Serve this hearty soup with a bowl of guacamole and corn chips for dipping and of course, a glass of Mesquil – you are there! 1 onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tbsp (25 mL) vegetable oil 1/2 each red, orange and yellow sweet peppers, chopped 1 cup (250 mL) chopped cooked chicken or turkey 4 cups (1 L) chicken stock 2 limes, grated zest and juice 1 bay leaf Chili flakes to taste Corn or wheat tortillas Vegetable oil In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat and cook onion and garlic covered until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in peppers, chicken, chicken stock, lime rind and bay leaf. Bring to boil and simmer about 20 minutes. Taste. Add chili flakes to taste. Stir in reserved lime juice. Meanwhile, heat oven to 350 F (180 C). Brush corn tortillas with vegetable oil.
Cut 2 tortillas into thin strips (about ¼ inch/ 6mm) and arrange on parchment lined baking sheet in single layer. Cut the remaining tortillas into quarters and arrange on baking sheet in single layer. Bake about 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Ladle soup into 4 bowls and add the cooked tortilla strips to soup accompanied by a basket of the warm corn chips and guacamole. Makes 4 servings.
Guacamole
Avocados are in season in Mexico now. Make the most of their sweet, distinctive taste with this classic Mexican dip, guacamole. Choose avocados that are ripe: that is they give to the pressure of your hand and feel soft. To open an avocado, run a sharp paring knife around the lengthwise circumference of the avocado until the knife hits the central pit; twist avocado and separate. Remove the pit and scoop the tender avocado meat out with a spoon into a bowl to make guacamole.
1 large or 2 smaller avocado, separated and scooped out (as above) 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp (25 mL) finely minced onion 1 large tomato, peeled, seeded and diced 1/2 sweet pepper, red, yellow or orange finely diced 1-2 tbsp (15 mL-25 mL) hot pepper, such as jalapeno or to taste 2 limes, juice and finely grated zest 2 tbsp (25 mL) finely chopped fresh cilantro (coriander) optional 1 tsp (5 mL) salt In a mixing bowl, mash avocado with a fork until smooth. Beat in garlic, onion, tomato, sweet pepper, hot pepper, lime juice, zest and coriander if using and salt until mixture is well combined. Spoon into serving bowl and surround with tortilla or corn chips to serve immediately. Dip may be made a few hours before serving; cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until serving time then serve as described. Makes about 2 cups (500 mL).

pies on a weekly basis. The puppies are brought in from local breeders every week, occasionally with the same dogs showcased two weeks in a row. “There’s a window for puppies when they’re at a good age to come and do this,” Barclay said. “For the puppies it’s about socialization, so we try to get puppies in that are at an age where socialization is good for them.” For Francine Saliba, Sunday’s class was an opportunity to socialize her seven-week-old German Shepherd puppies with the students. She has been breeding the dogs selectively for more than 23 years. “I find that German Shepherds are one of the greatest dogs to own, but I mainly breed them to be family pets,” Saliba said. “German Shepherds back in the 90s had a very bad name for them, and then I made it my dedication that I would breed them to be more gentle.” Part of the process for Saliba involved training them to be family-oriented and social. As the owner of Eden Acres Kennels, she has been training German Shepherds carefully and breeding selectively to ensure the best possible results. Bringing the puppies to the studio was an important part of teaching them how to socialize with others. “We’ve had some classes where none of the puppies are available for adoption, and some of them where some of them are,” Carver said. “In this class all of them were up for adoption.” In the future, Barclay and Carver hope to have fundraisers to sponsor rescue dogs from the Toronto Humane society. Neil McNeil in OFSAA hockey championships By Alan Shackleton THE NEIL McNeil Catholic High School Maroons boys Senior hockey team is heading to the Ontario championships for the second time in the last three years. The Maroons qualified for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships by winning the City of Toronto title for Catholic schools earlier this month. The Neil McNeil boys did not lose a game all season in league and exhibition play and capped that perfect run with a 3-0 win over Bishop Allen Academy of North York in the Toronto District Catholic (Colleges) Athletic Association (TDCAA) championship game on March 1 at the Mastercard Centre in Etobicoke. Coach Peter Ranson said the team members had set a goal at the start of the season to aim for an undefeated record and he was happy they were able to achieve it with a 20-0 finish. Goalie Christian Senarega earned the shut out for Neil McNeil in the city championship game. “He’s played in three championship games for us and won them all by shut outs,” said Ranson of his goalie. Senarega, in Grade 12, played in two previous city championships while a member of the Neil McNeil Junior boys hockey teams when he was in Grade 9 and Grade 10.

The Neil McNeil Catholic High School Senior boys hockey team will be taking part in the provincial championships this week in Barrie. Neil McNeil’s Junior boys team also won the TDCSAA championship this year, but do not advance any further as OFSAA competition in hockey is only for Senior teams. The Neil McNeil Juniors have been city champs for the past four years. Ranson said Neil McNeil’s strong Junior hockey program directly translates to the success of the Senior team. “We started building the Junior program six years ago and it now feeds a strong Senior program,” said Ranson. It also provides the Senior team with players who are used to winning championships and expect to do well and have success. Ranson said along with the Senior and Junior boys teams, Neil McNeil has a non-contact hockey team which also competes in a league.
“It’s important to give kids an outlet and an opportunity to play hockey and gain experience,” he said. Neil McNeil’s last trip to the OFSAA hockey championships was in 2017.
Seeded fifth They were one of two local teams representing Toronto that year as the Malvern Collegiate Institute team was also at that OFSAA as the Toronto District School Board champs. This year’s OFSAA AAA championships, which is the highest level, will be played in Barrie from March 20 to 22. Representing the TDSB at this year’s OFSAA is Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute. Sixteen teams will be taking part in the tournament in Barrie. The Maroons were seeded fifth among the teams, and
Ranson said he was cautiously optimistic heading into OFSAA that the team will put in a strong performance. He pointed out that in exhibition games this season, the Maroons beat both St. Theresa of Richmond Hill and Waterdown who are also playing in this year’s OFSAA championships. “We’re happy to be representing the community and are very proud of the boys,” Ranson said. Along with the strong goaltending of Senarega, the Maroons also look for team leadership from Joe Cane, Joe O’Keefe and Owen Porter, said Ranson. Team members are: Jacob and Justin Andress, Ronan Brady, Joe Cane, Ryan Doyle, Vincent Fera, Benjamin Gonsalvez, Matej Krapez, Connor Mckee, Degan Noble, Joe O’Keefe, Jack Platana, Owen Porter, Connor Rotter, Christian Senarega and Lief Wilson.

A Beach resident for close to 60 years, Jane Durst Pulkys has been running Creative Health for Life on Queen Street East since 2001.
Canada’s top nutritionist on Queen Street East By Surina Nath Nutritionist and Live Blood Cell Analyst Jane Durst Pulkys has been running Creative Health for Life on Queen Street East since 2001, specializing in Metabolic Balance — a weight loss program for all ages that helps people lose, gain or maintain weight in order to reduce inflammation and balance hormone levels. “With almost 600 clients I am currently #1 coach in Canada for this program as I put genuine effort into my clients’ success,” Jane says. “I also believe that the true foundation of the program’s success is how it develops a personalized nutrition plan based on one’s unique blood values and medical history, and personal likes and dislikes.” Backed by over 25 years of scientific study, it is managed by dedicated physicians and nutritional
scientists in Germany. There are no prescribed injections pills or shakes. Your local grocery store can easily provide all the wholesome nutrientrich food listed on your personalized nutrition plan. Being in private practice for 20 years as a nutritionist, Jane is considered an expert in her field and has appeared on TV shows such as Breakfast Television, CityTV and Global News. She is also the author The Book On Confidence - A Complete Guide To Standing Tall On The Inside. “I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1980, and after raising three boys I went back to study Holistic Nutrition. “I began my career by doing Live Blood Cell Analysis, worked for Fortune 500 companies and then teamed up with medical doctors in the Beach and worked there for two-and-a-half years as the resident nutritionist.” After incorporating

IN AN era where tablets have replaced colouring books, and streaming has made it easy to consume only the content you are comfortable with; it begs the question of whether children need better guidance to explore the cultural world. For Timothy Dawson, bassist at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a good childhood involves being exposed to everything. “It is the only way that one can widen their mind,” he said. Crediting his success to his family, mentors and the lack of a television, he firmly believes that his strong connection with music exists because of the exposure to it that he received in his early years. “My father was a pianist and church organist. He loved to sing. And my mother loved to entertain. My father would sing around the piano for guests,” Dawson said. In hopes of building his own guitar, a young Dawson visited a music shop to buy a part. This became a remarkable encounter that he recalls more than 40 years later. “I felt like I was in a magical world, I mean my eyes were just bugging out of my head. The music was just so beautiful, and I ended up asking my mother if I could take guitar lessons.” For him, hearing the store’s owner play classical tunes on his guitar with an accompanying harmonica was the deciding factor in his decision to pursue music professionally. At the time, The University of Alberta had started a music teaching program for kids. Dawson’s family signed him up for flute lessons. On the first class, he and other students were lined up and

evaluated according to their height and embouchure. Dawson’s tall stature led him to be chosen to play bass. Comparing the episode to the Sorting Hat scene from Harry Potter, Dawson was grateful it happened. “I would’ve been a terrible flute player,” he said. Like the wands in the wizarding world, Dawson said it is the instrument that chooses its player, not vice versa. In hopes of creating similar experiences for today’s youth, Dawson started the Kingston Road Village Concert Series, offering short and exciting classical concerts at Kingston Road United Church. An upcoming concert in April will feature the Instrumental Petting Zoo which will give kids the opportunity to see, hear, touch and try instruments. The goal is to give children an interactive introduction into the world of classical music. The Instrumental Petting Zoo is part of the National Piano Trio’s concert on Sunday, April 7 in which they will perform works by Tchaikosky and Rachmaninoff. Admission for children will be free at this concert to encourage young people to attend and take part in the Instrumental Petting Zoo. Also, the Kingston Road Village Concert Series’ presentation of Let’s Hit Something this Sunday, March 24 by the TorQ Percussion Quartet will feature a percussion workshop for all ages prior to the performance. Admission to this concert is also free for children. One could say that Dawson attempts to recreate his own version of the Sorting Hat moment for young, prospective musicians. As more and more schools cut arts programs and lose government funding, Daw-

Toronto Symphony Orchestra bassist Timothy Dawson is the founder of the Kingston Road Village Concert Series. son feels that students lose opportunities to think critically and have an independent mind. Acknowledging that classical music has a reputation as being complex, he hopes to provide an affordable and accessible avenue for parents, children and students to explore and enjoy the genre. Dawson joined the TSO in 1980 as its youngest ever member. Recalling his experiences with several great musicians (Tom Monahan, Franco Petracchi, Stuart Knussen) he credits his success to his mentors. He recalls his audition with the TSO, one of the most important reviews of his life. Having prepped rigorously with his then mentor, Stuart Knussen, he found the audition easy compared
to previous expectations. The moment when it was announced that the job was offered to him, became a defining moment in Dawson’s life. “I just about fell over. I didn’t have to go to the second round. These are the days that changed my life. I’ve had the best education. I’ve travelled the world. My job is the exact opposite of a desk job,” he said. As a way to pay-it-forward, Dawson teaches music at the University of Toronto and finds time to offer advice to students at the National Music Camp of Canada. “I was given so much attention. My teachers shared their passion in such a generous way. And I want to pass on my version of what I was given,” he said.
