THE BALMY Beach Residents Association, Beach Metro News and Community Centre 55 are hosting a town hall meeting featuring candidates running for city council in the riding of Beaches—East York. The meeting will take place on Monday, September 24, 2018 at Kingston Road United Church, 975 Kingston Road at 7:30 p.m. All registered candidates running for councillor in the Beaches—East York area have been invited and will be given the opportunity to make a statement. Written questions from the audience will be

accepted. If you have a question for the candidates, you can submit it at the start of the evening, or you may send it in advance by email to editor@beachmetro. com. This is a free event that is open to the general public. With the possibility of new ward boundaries, and both of our area councillors retiring, this is your opportunity to hear the new voices that you can choose to be our voice at city hall. As of press time, election day is scheduled for Monday, October 22, 2018.

Beach resident Dora Attard collected thousands of bits and pieces of plastic garbage from along the lakeshore of the Beach for a six-month period before deciding something more needed to be done to draw attention to the problem. To increase awareness, Dora took the garbage she and her family had collected and created several art installations to display her findings. A sampling of the over 1,100 straws and hundreds of balloons, lighters, and ribbons that she picked up are shown here. She was also able to create an eight-foot-high water bottle-shaped sculpture using the 1,000 plastic water bottles that she had collected. See page 17.

Local city councillor candidates riding out ward limbo By Nina Rafeek

WEEKS AWAY from municipal election on October 22, candidates for Beaches—East York city council are in ward-boundary limbo after a series of unprecedented judicial jigs and political pirouettes. The shake-up, which involved Ontario’s Superior Court, Queen’s Park and Toronto City Hall, was over the provincial government’s decision to reduce the number of wards and city councillors to 25. Initially, candidates for city council were running under the 47-ward model, which was to be implemented on December 1, 2018, when the new 2018-2022 term of city council begins.

All of that changed on July 30 when Premier Doug Ford introduced Bill 5, the Better Local Government Act, to reduce the size of city council from 47 to 25 councillors. Under the new act, the boundaries for Beaches—East York would change to match the provincial riding, morphing two wards into one. On August 14, 2018, Bill 5 was passed at Queen’s Park and the city set a new registration date for those interested in running for council under the 25-ward model. From a campaign perspective, this meant that candidates for city councillor, many of which had been organizing their campaigns since May, had two weeks to change their campaign strategy after the bill was passed. New faces entered the race, while others decided to drop out.

For some candidates, this meant printed literature had to be destroyed, revised and increased to match the new ward boundaries, and fast — with the revised boundaries, the number of constituents in Beaches—East York jumps from 54,265 to 109,465 according to Elections Ontario and City of Toronto statistics. Valerie Maltais, who registered early as a candidate, is running for Beaches—East York. Maltais explained that she had to act quickly to ramp up her outreach and fundraising efforts. “It can certainly be a disadvantage for people like me and for others who don’t have the affiliations and the funding to adapt,” said Maltais.

HEAT WITH STYLE

GROWING UP in a small town, I became aware early of what a difference dedicated volunteers can make to a community. However until I moved to the Beach, I didn’t realize that right here, in the heart of one of the biggest cities in North America, the spirit of volunteerism was not only alive but thriving. So many of our important community assets, such as Community Centre 55, Senior Link (now Neighbourhood Link Support Services, Beach Metro News and Pegasus Community Project for Adults with Special Needs), were all fostered and developed by local resident volunteers. A desire to recognize the major impact that such longterm, multifaceted volunteers have had in shaping the culture of our community led to the creation of the Beach Citizen of the Year Award. Over the last 18 years, the names of the Citizens of the Year form an honour roll of people who made an important difference to life in the Beach. This year I am happy to announce that the 2018

Beach Citizen of the Year is Sheila Blinoff. Many of you will know Sheila from her over 40 years as General Manager for Beach Metro News. However, Sheila’s contributions to the area go far beyond Beach Metro. Sheila and her husband Andrew purchased a home on Balsam Avenue in 1969 (for, believe it or not, $28,500). A young mother with a small son, she was eager to get involved in her new neighbourhood. About that time, the Toronto District School Board decided to replace the original Balmy Beach School. A number of mothers in the area began meeting to challenge the open concept design and Sheila became involved in the project. Their idea was for a school that was a community hub which could be used by both elementary students and community members. When the new school was built, the old school was used for a while to hold classes for adults. More than 400 people were involved. Sheila taught dressmaking and learned how to play the recorder as well as simple electrical fixes. The Balmy Beach mothers

The challenges of having to increase funding and outreach efforts mid-campaign was a primary reason the city and other affiliated parties fought the bill in the Superior Court of Ontario and won. On September 10, Superior Court Justice Edward Belobaba ruled against Bill 5, citing that changing ward boundaries and reducing the size of city council mid-election infringed on the rights of freedom of expression (Section 2b of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) of the candidates. On the same day, Premier Doug Ford held a press conference at Queen’s Park announcing that he will use his power as premier to invoke Section 33 of the Charter, otherwise known as the notwithstanding clause, which overrides Justice Belobaba’s decision. The clause gives provincial powers or parliament the ability to override Section 2 or Section 7 to 15 of the charter for a five-year term. This would be the first time in history that an Ontario premier has invoked the notwithstanding clause. Pushing the agenda forward, the premier reintroduced the legislation as Bill 31, calling it the Efficient Local Government Act. Several candidates for Beaches—East York expressed their concern with Premier Ford’s quick and unprecedented reaction to the superior court judgement. For Adam Smith, a newer candidate for the area, Ford’s de-

cision to invoke the clause was “anti-democratic” in his opinion. “Ford truly believes he is the king of Ontario,” he said in an interview with Beach Metro News last week. Beaches—East York candidate Brad Bradford said that invoking such as powerful clause should be done with careful consideration. “We should have a very, very high bar for [the notwithstanding clause],” he said. “I don’t think it should be used for a pet project.” Bradford has been campaigning since June and opened his office at 155 Main Street last weekend. While the candidates interviewed by Beach Metro News said that constituents reaction to the ward reduction was mixed, almost all Beaches—East York residents they spoke with were against the use of the notwithstanding clause. “People feel like they haven’t been asked their opinion,” Beaches—East York candidate Josh Makuch. Concern over Ford’s decision was echoed at city hall. In a city council meeting on September 13, Ward 22 Councillor Josh Matlow put forth a motion to establish a city charter. The provisions set out in this charter would trump provincial legislation on municipal issues which would essentially create more autonomy for the City of Toronto. On the same day, with a vote of 28-8, city council passed the motion to further the idea of a city charter and have it reviewed by the federal government. With an election day looming as at press time, Beaches— East York candidates and constituents are still unsure of what final decisions will be made.

Stephen Andreopoulos is leaving his successful painting business to work on earning a Certificate of Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University in Wales.

Business owner off to Cardiff By Fiona Bramzell It’s not unusual for students to work during the summer to help pay for school, but when that business pulls in over $100,000 in a year, that’s taking a student job to a whole new level. Avis Painting owner Stephen Andreopoulos has done just that. At 22 years old, Stephen has achieved what many young adults of his age just dream about. He is heading to Cardiff Metropolitan University to continue his pursuit of a teaching certificate with his ultimate goal being teaching co-op and physical education to high school students. Being a member of the East York Baseball Camp from an early age, and having always been heavily involved in sports throughout high school, it seemed natural for Stephen to want to work in the field. After graduating from Humber College in Fitness and Health Promotion and gaining his Bachelor of Applied Science from University of Guelph-Humber, he decided to apply to Cardiff for their accelerated one-year postgrad Certificate of Education so he could get started on his career sooner rather than later. But, as he leaves for Cardiff, he’ll also be leaving a thriving painting business that all began when he was painting decks for some extra cash at 17. “It’s been crazy how the business has grown so fast,” said Stephen when we sat down for a quick chat before he was off to quote another painting job. “Just through referrals, word of mouth and posting on the Facebook community groups,

I became so busy that I had to start taking on employees and even contracting jobs out,” he said. Stephen’s close-knit family have been an important part of his success and he gives full credit to his mom, Diana, and older brother, Michael, a professional plumber, for helping him along the way. His business was given a boost when he applied for, and received, a City of Toronto Youth Enterprise Grant which not only supplied the cash to purchase equipment but also provided mentorship which, as a new business owner, Stephen found invaluable. “Figuring out how to run a business has been a real learning opportunity,” he said. “From taxes and payroll to the WSIB and bookkeeping, it’s been a lot for me to deal with in addition to actually completing the jobs.” Stephen plans to keep Avis Painting going while he’s away, and given its success you’d think he’d be tempted to ditch his career dreams and just focus on growing his business. But while the business means a lot to him, Stephen says he’s adamant that teaching is where his passion lies. “Giving back to kids and providing the support and mentoring I received when I was young is important to me. I’ve been very lucky—my brother has been a huge role model and, as a single parent, my mom had to make a lot of sacrifices for us. Whatever I do, whether it’s with Avis Painting or teaching, I just want to make her proud.” Having such an entrepreneurial, hardworking and caring son as Stephen, she undoubtedly already is.

COUNTERTENOR (NOUN) — of or being the highest male voice; having a range above that of the tenor. Ever heard one? If not, now is your chance. The Kingston Road Village Concert Series (KRVCS) will kick off its 2018-19 concert series with a bang. The Countertenor Madness concert on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. will showcase five countertenors in a one-of-a-kind extravaganza. It is rare enough to have one countertenor roaming around, but it is almost unheard of to have five in the same concert. This is possibly one of the only times you will hear such a unique event. feature a varied program. You’ll hear some standard countertenor repertoire and a few more modern works. All of these singers are currently pursuing graduate or postgraduate degrees at the University of Toronto. They have been recognized for their beautiful voices across Canada and around the world. “This concert marks the first time that they have all performed together,” said Mary. “Two special guests will also be appearing as part of this wonderful evening. Mexican musicians pianist Miguel Brito and tenor Jesús Cortés will present an homage to Mexico along with César Aguilar, as part of the concert.” It is their fervent wish that the audience will experience the musical passion that unites them as an ensemble. Less than a year ago Miguel and César met briefly in the hallway of the music faculty at the University of Toronto. Their brief exchange led to a collaboration that resulted in concerts promoting Mexican classical music. A rather unusual circumstance led to the creation of their trio. Jesús was holidaying in Canada when, through a friend, he was introduced to César. When César found out that Jesús was also an opera singer he insisted on hearing him sing. The voice had such a special quality that César did not hesitate to introduce him to Mary Gore, the driving force behind this concert. She, in turn was so excited by the sound of his voice that she decided then and there to fly him from Mexico City for the October concert. These three musicians are excited to share their music and to show their appreciation for Canada and the many Canadians who have welcomed and supported them. You will not want to miss this evening of glorious music. Tickets are $25 at the door or through www.countertenors.eventbrite.com.

In My Opinion

Federal government should take stronger action to eliminate guns Nathaniel Erskine-Smith MP Beaches—East York OUR FEDERAL government should take stronger action to eliminate gun violence, and that includes a handgun ban. We have a responsibility to keep our communities safe. With the violence in our own community this summer, and having lost an incredible young woman in Reese, I have spent a lot of time reading and thinking about what more we can do to fulfill this central responsibility. The prime minister is engaged in the same exercise. Recently, he

tasked new Minister Bill Blair with reducing gun crime, including an examination of a full ban on handguns and assault weapons in Canada. Other jurisdictions, including the UK and Australia, have taken similar action with some positive results. And while we should acknowledge that it can be difficult to draw bright lines to specific successful policies, there is enough available evidence to support more action. The evidence we have here, based on StatsCan, suggests that “the criminal use of firearms is a focus of concern in Canada, particularly in certain cities like Toronto where media reports have identified a growing number of shootings to date for 2018.”

On StatsCan’s own numbers, 130 homicides were committed with handguns in 2016, or 58 per cent of all shooting homicides. The data is not sufficiently clear to know entirely where these crime guns are coming from. But we do know that a number of crime guns come from legal sources. For example, according to data from Toronto Police Services, of 726 crime guns seized in 2017, the majority cannot be traced, 25 per cent can be traced from the US, and 20 per cent are from domestic sources. We also know that the number of stolen legal handguns has increased over the years, and there is some evidence of straw purchasing. Beyond criminal activity, we also know that

legal handguns are used in suicides and accidental deaths. So there is a reasonable basis for believing that a handgun ban could help to reduce gun violence. More, such a ban could apply only to private possession, allowing target shooting to continue, albeit limited to tightly regulated commercial facilities. On this latter point, we should strengthen the security of these facilities, including 24/7 video surveillance (already a requirement for commercial cannabis growers). As we move forward with any handgun ban, we should also commit ourselves to the evidence, to both track crime gun data with more specificity going forward, and to review the success of any new rules

after a five or 10-year period of time. We should also recognize that a ban on the private possession of handguns is only part of any holistic solution to the problem of gun violence in our cities. Our government’s Bill C-71, currently before parliament, seeks to improve and tighten Canada’s gun control rules, including strengthening background checks. In Australia, when the government adopted strict measures in the wake of a mass shooting, it also committed significant funds to a buyback program to get guns off the street.

Letters to the Editor My wish list for the next mayor...

PHOTO: KENN LEITCH

Moody blues Photographer Kenn Leitch captured a moody mid-day sky on September 9.

For our next mayor I am seeking a candidate who will respect drivers, you know, we who actually contribute to the economy and the coffers of the city. Our city councillors and mayor are constantly saying the city is in need of money, and seeking ways of garnering more. Yet, while it has been suggested numerous times to have cyclists insured and licensed, which would also make them responsible and accountable, our present government refuses to do so. The burden of paying for infrastructure should be shared by all, especially in light of the lost revenue due to having replaced numerous parking spaces to accommodate cyclists. They pay nothing for this, which is not fair to drivers who are inconvenienced by the lack of parking spaces. As well, shop owners have lost customers and revenue because of the lack of convenient parking near their stores. By licensing cyclists, this would also ensure that when they do ride their bikes in a dangerous fashion and cause accidents, the costs of repairs

or lost time at work will be assumed by the person responsible, not the victim. I am looking for a mayor who will privatize garbage and recycling pick-up, and who will create employment by utilizing pre-existing facilities which can be repurposed so we may burn garbage. This will save the money we spend to ship our waste, as well as ridding said waste responsibly, creating about one per cent emissions into the atmosphere and alleviate additions to landfills. Mr. Ford is right to close injection sites, as they encourage and endorse the use of illegal, addictive and dangerous substances. Second, it is an open invitation to drug dealers. Third, it does nothing to get people clean. What is needed is education about the positive uses of marijuana which is non-addictive and, unlike pharmaceuticals, has never killed anyone, as it is impossible to overdose. We need a mayor who will ensure our taxes are allocated properly and look after the city’s infrastructure; a candidate who respects tax dollars and doesn’t piddle money away frivolously. (Editor’s note: Letters are edited for brevity and clarity.)

Test your knowledge on the history of our ‘houses of worship’ Gene Domagala

D

id you know that in the delivery area of the Beach Metro News there are over 100 houses of worship? This is not an article about religion, it’s an overview of a few historical facts that I have gathered regarding some of these places. They say that the number of people that believe in a higher power or belong to a religious affiliation is supposed to be down considerably when compared to the late 1890s or early 1900s. While doing some research on this topic, I found that in our area alone there are thousands of people who frequented these places of worship and in fact still do today. Let’s take a look at some historic facts and figures about our community. Take for example what was once called

‘East Toronto’ and the Beach area as it is still known. The population of East Toronto was about 5,000 people while the population of the Beach and surrounding area ranged between 5,000 to 7,000. In the surrounding area you could count the houses of worship on 10 fingers. Some statistics show that of these religious places only 45-50 per cent of the population were members. How many of you were members of these houses of worship? I have some questions and anecdotes for you, dear reader, so read on. So, back to the town of East Toronto. I am going to present you with some questions, some of which are easier to answer than others. I plan to answer them in a future column, so here goes: 1. This area at the time had a busy railroad industry and there were two houses of worship known back then as “railroad houses” of worship. What were the locations, names and religious affiliations of these places? I can tell you that one was developed

for use by the people on the Danforth. 2. How many religious denominations do you think were on the Danforth at that time? 3. What is the name of one of the oldest houses of worship in our area that has its own cemetery? 4. Do you know the name of the religious building on Queen Street East across from Kew Gardens that has been turned into a condo building? That one is easy! I will now give you some questions (and hints) about the religions and denominations. 5. What church used to be there known as Tent Church? Although there were other tent churches, which one was the Baptist church, which later was a theatre then became a synagogue? 6. There was a religious building that looked like a lighthouse, located just east of Coxwell Avenue on the north side of Queen Street East. 7. There is a religious building on Kingston Road that used to be on Beech Avenue?

8. What is the name of the older religious building that was built through the generosity of the Massey family, one of the richest families in Canada, over 110 years ago? Now, here is one of the hardest questions. 9. Where was the religious building that was associated with the Ashbridge family, who lived at the time at 1449 Queen St. East, nearly 140 years ago? Hint: It is located just east of Greenwood Avenue, on the north side. You can only see it from the south side. I could go on and on about how many religious buildings existed at one time on Kingston Road and Dawes Road too. There are so many different architectural styles that these houses of worship have showcased throughout the ages. Some were small and others were very large, while some offered all kinds of architectural delights and have since become store fronts throughout the area. I salute the people who helped contribute these buildings to our area and for adding to the quality and rich history of the east end.

Artist takes her unique gift seriously By Surina Nath

THE BEACH Guild of Fine Art is hosting its annual Fall Art Show at the Beach United Church from September 21-23 which incorporates work from over 40 local artists. Artist Nanci Miranda, born and raised in Toronto, has four paintings on display at the show and lives in Scarborough with husband Michael and daughter, Maddy. Nanci told Beach Metro News that five years ago she had fallen ill and didn’t work

for a year. “I am much better now,” she said. “What came out of my situation was the realization that I have never painted in my life. Once my sickness was healed, the paintings just flew out of me.” With such a unique technique and aesthetic appeal, it’s hard to believe Nanci has not had any formal artistic training. “I’m still trying to make sense of how I can paint this way,” she said. “After three months of being ill and staring at the same things around my home for weeks, I needed to pick up a pencil and paper to try to draw them!” Nanci had no expectations as to what would come of her artwork, and is thankful her passion and dedication has paid off. She describes her style as “very abstract.” “Most of my pieces are contemporary, I do commissioned portraiture as well,” she said. In the show, Nanci is featuring a few pieces from a collection called English Garden—one in blues and another version in yellows. Nanci said that she began the English Garden collection a few months

Voice-over artist and actress Tricia Brioux takes on the role of Lady Bracknell in The Alumnae Theatre’s production of The Importance of Being Ernest which runs from September 21-October 6. By Alison M. Smith

TRICIA BRIOUX calls herself a voice chameleon. The 25-year resident of the Beach has done theatre, film and TV work but found her true calling as a voice-over artist. Throughout her career, she has played all kinds of characters, from wicked witches to seductive temptresses to kind old ladies. Often working from her studio at Victoria Park Avenue and Gerrard Street, she lends her voice to commercials, documentaries, video games and her favourite genre, cartoons. Her most recent role is on The Alumnae Theatre stage as Lady Bracknell, the ruthless and overbearing dowager in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. This biting Victorian satire is a far cry from a cartoon, but Brioux dove

right in. “Lady Bracknell is a force to be reckoned with and a challenge to play,” she said. “This role really makes me stretch the boundaries of my acting capabilities, not only with the mannerisms, the accent and the difficult turns of phrase, but also with the ideals and sensibilities that motivate this character. It’s just so different from me in my ordinary life.” It’s a plum part with arguably many of the funniest lines in the play. Brioux enjoys Lady Bracknell’s response when she discovers that Jack is an orphan. “To lose one parent, Mr. Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.” It’s also a daunting part that has previously been played by men and powerful and eminent actresses like Joan Plowright, Judi Dench and

Maggie Smith. “I have very large shoes to fill,” said Brioux. “But it’s been immensely interesting and satisfying. I really love doing period pieces, and Oscar Wilde’s writing is amazing.” The Importance of Being Earnest is directed by Barbara Larose. It will be playing at The Alumnae Theatre at 70 Berkeley Street from September 21 to October 6. The Alumnae Theatre has a rich 101-year history in Toronto. Based in a converted, historical fire hall, the theatre produces unique and adventurous high-quality theatre and promotes the skill and development of women. Tickets for The Importance of Being Ernest are $25 each and can be purchased in person or online. Sunday matinees are pay what you can. Find out more about Tricia Brioux on www.alumnaetheatre.com.

Aiming for a plastic-free Beach By Susan Legge

DORA ATTARD’S frustration over the amount of plastic garbage she was collecting along the beach inspired her to start Plastic Free Beach, a Facebook page designed to create awareness. But she didn’t stop there. After collecting six-months’ worth of discarded straws, coffee cups, plastic bottles and odds and ends along the beach, Dora and her family washed and cleaned the garbage and created several art installations that she hoped to display in the neighbourhood. She went to Councillor Mary-Margaret McMahon and MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who helped her get a “music and arts” permit

so she could set up the art by the beach. Despite not getting the Woodbine Beach location she had hoped for, her tent at Balmy Beach attracted hundred of visitors, and several media outlets such as Toronto.com and Toronto Star picked up her story. Dora, a preschool teacher, says she’s planning another garbage collection campaign next year, this one focusing on cigarette butts. “They are everywhere,” she said. “There are over 4,000 chemical toxins in those butts that get washed down to the lake. I understand that it’s everyone’s beach, but people need to take care of their own garbage and not rely on the city to do it for them. The city is not your mother.”

A Trustee’s Job

Stronger action needed Continued from Page 6 As we share a long border with a country that lacks any semblance of thoughtful gun control, we need to increase our resources and efforts at cracking down on the supply of illegal guns coming from the US. We have allocated over $80 million to this effort to date. We have also allocated over $300 million to a guns and gang strategy. StatsCan tells us that gang-driven firearm-related crime has been steadily increasing for years, and that the rate of youth accused of firearm-related violent crime is also on the rise. We need to ensure that any funds directed at this issue do not singularly flow to more policing, but are instead used to create opportunities for youth communities, so that joining a gang is no longer an attractive or rational choice.

Lastly, gang violence is driven by the pursuit of profit, and that pursuit of profit largely depends upon drug prohibition. No amount of policing will ever reduce gang and gun violence as much as removing the economic incentive of the black market drug trade. I am not naive enough to think that there is the political courage to end drug prohibition in the near term. But there is broad support across Canada, in both urban and rural communities, for a handgun ban. Our government should take immediate action to make that happen. Join me on September 23, 2018 for a Gun Violence Town Hall at St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at 49 Felstead Avenue. The meeting will be co-hosted by MP Julie Dabrusin.

From the Beach to a royal wedding

I

never did receive an invite to the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Maybe my invitation was lost in the mail, but one lucky guy from the Beach attended the ceremony at Windsor Castle in May. You could even say Patrick J. Adams walked the future Duchess of Sussex down the aisle before the Prince, albeit on the TV show Suits where he played the love interest to Markle’s character. The two finally tied the knot on the seventh season of the Toronto-filmed series and rode off into the sunset and off the show. In real life Adams had his own dream beach wedding to Pretty Little Liars actress Troian Bellisario last December. The two are starring together in the new sci-fi drama Clara which premiered at TIFF last week. Adams plays an obsessed astronomer who searches for signs of life outside of earth’s cosmos while his own life falls apart. When the royal engagement was announced last November, Adams sent a tweet about his Suits co-star Markle that made us laugh, “She said she was just going out to get some milk…” Just before the May wedding, Adams sent a touching tweet out to Meghan Markle that said “70 years ago my grandparents Patricia and Cedric Marsh were married in a small service in Windsor, England. Just found that out. Already getting misty.” Most of us don’t marry a prince or princess in a castle, but the circle of life works in mysterious ways in the universe. Patrick’s maternal grandfather, Cedric Marsh, moved to Canada and

“I’d like a bigger palace, I mean place.” Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams during their television show days, Suits. became an engineering professor at Concordia University in Montreal. A world-class scholar, he co-invented the tuning fork-shaped football goalposts used by the CFL and NFL. Patrick Johannes Adams was born August 27, 1981 to Rowan Marsh and Claude Adams, a journalist, foreign correspondent and documentary filmmaker who co-authored the 1981 book, The Canadian Caper, which told the true story of our diplomats hiding Americans during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis —and don’t get me started on the bogus, Oscar-winning, Hollywood version, Argo. The Adams family settled in the Beach area of Toronto, living on Silver Birch Avenue and then for many years in a cozy bungalow on Leonard Circle (near Lee Avenue) while Claude Adams reported from around the world. Patrick has said that his father “knows almost everything about everything.” Claude Adams passed on his love of storytelling to his son. Patrick wanted to be an actor from an early age.

When it came time for high school he heard about the theatre arts courses at Northern Secondary and decided that was where he had to be, even if it meant long hours on the TTC from his home in the Beach. The younger Adams is an actor, producer, director, photographer and world-traveller. He has changed his look for the film Clara playing a bearded scientist who loses track of his own life. His friend (played by Ennis Esmer) tells him ”if you spend all your time looking up at the stars, you’re going to miss what’s right in front of you.” Clara was filmed in Toronto in March 2017. In the trailer there is a scene outside the shuttered McLaughlin Planetarium where many a pupil once looked up at the stars. Someday we may only have celluloid images and fond memories of buildings that are long gone. CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

Horticultural Matters

Outdoor art exhibit features handchiselled works from Zimbabwe Steven Chadwick is a professional gardener, horticulturist, and long-time Beach resident

I

t’s not often that you see a botanical garden planting rocks instead of groupings of unusual perennials or colourful waves of annuals and tropicals. But at the Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) and adjacent Edwards Gardens, this is exactly what is going on. Of course, the giant stones perched on large section of logs are not the usual granite or lumpy chunks of limestone — these rocks are part of the ZimSculpt exhibit, an exquisite display of contemporary, abstract and traditional stone sculptures created by some of Zimbabwe’s finest artists. The stunning artwork that is presented in the TBG’s perennial beds and perched among the towering banana plants and enormous alocasias of Edwards Gardens is a spectacular sight to behold, with some of the sculptures measuring nearly seven feet tall and weighing close to half a ton. The medium used by the artists is definitely worth the price of admission (it’s free and open to the public) with many of the stones often mined by hand from the country’s vast geological deposits and carved without the use of any electrical tools, using only toothed hammers, chisels and sandpaper. The grain and markings of such exotic stones like spotted leopard rock, opal stone, the dark purple hues of lepidolite, black and gray springstone and a beautiful creamy coloured butter jade could even make the raw stone works of art on their own. All of the pieces on display are for sale with a large percentage of the sales going to various Zimbabwean charitable organizations and of course, the artists themselves. Curator Vivienne Croisette and her partner Joseph both live in Zimbabwe year- round and are passionate about promoting this unique form of Shona stone sculpture. They have been at the helm of the globe-trotting exhibit for the past 10 years, showing at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show and many other high-end botanical destinations throughout the United States, Europe

and Canada. Pricing is reasonable for durable stone art that follows the British and European tradition of displaying artwork outside in the garden. But like most art exhibits, the price of a few of the larger pieces might make your hair curlier than a plate full of rice stick noodles. As the song goes “if I had a million dollars” I would probably buy that life-sized panther displayed at the front entrance because it would look fabulous next to the pool. Unfortunately, I don’t have a million and I don’t have a pool, so I suppose with a price tag of $15,200, I’ll have to put the panther purchase on the shelf for now. For those who don’t have a suitcase bursting with bills, there is a smaller marketplace featuring touring Zimbabwean sculptors demonstrating their craft to the delight of many visiting school groups. The marketplace also has free guided tours, educational

talks and a display of smaller objects that can be had for much less than the larger sculptures. For those of you who prefer a more plant-based form of carving, don’t miss the two carpet beds created by the talented staff of the City of Torontoowned Edwards Gardens. The smaller bed (30 feet in length) features a plantbased representation of two humming birds with the larger carpet bed displaying a touching and sometimes emotional tribute to the devastating fire that killed 16 horses at nearby Sunnybrook stables on May 21 of this year. It is a beautiful depiction of a white spirit horse in full gallop racing towards the stables in an attempt to rescue her friends. The carpet beds will be maintained until the first heavy frost and the ZimSculpt exhibition will run from August 3 to September 30th. Admission and parking are free.

When choosing vegetables for this stew, use a medium eggplant free of blemishes and firm to the touch. Cut off the stem and discard before cutting eggplant into cubes. You can include a mixture of summer squash (yellow zucchini) and the more common green zucchini in this recipe. Choose small, firm squash for best texture and flavour. Feel free to use a variety of coloured peppers in this recipe and if you like a little heat, use a hot pepper to taste. Fresh tomatoes work well but blanch first in boiling water for 30 seconds then dip into cold water to make removing skins easy, then chop. As the season progresses and fresh tomatoes are less plentiful, substitute canned tomatoes. Likewise, use fresh basil while it is plentiful and substitute dry basil later in the season. 1/4 cup (50 mL) olive oil 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) diced onions (about 2) 2 cloves of garlic minced 1 eggplant, with skin on, cut into 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) cubes (about 4 cups/ 1 L) 3 small zucchini cut into 1/4 inch

Ratatouille

atatouille, a vegetable stew from the south of France, is perfect for the harvest season. A cooked mixture of eggplant, zucchini, onion, garlic and basil simmered together in olive oil, it is a tasty example of Mediterranean flavours. Ratatouille can be served many ways: hot as a vegetable side dish or cold as a salad. If the vegetables are finely chopped, it makes a tasty spread for crackers or fresh sliced baguette as an appetizer. Add a can of chick peas to ratatouille and toss with cooked pasta for a vegetarian pasta toss. It complements any roast meat including turkey (remember, Thanksgiving is around the corner) and you should always make enough to have as leftovers and serve cold as a luncheon salad the next day. Ratatouille’s versatility and ease of preparation makes it an ideal recipe for every cook’s repertoire. Enjoy it especially during the autumn when the veg-

(5 mm) slices (about 4 cups/ 1 L) 1 red pepper cut into 1/2 inch (5mm) dice 1 green pepper cut into 1/2 inch (5 mm) dice 1 tbsp (15 mL) granulated sugar 1/4 cup (50 mL) fresh basil chopped or 1 tbsp (15 mL) dried 1 can (28 oz/796 mL) or use 3 large tomatoes, blanched and skinned 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh parsley, preferably Italian flat leaf, finely chopped 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/4 tsp (1 mL) fresh black pepper In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onions; cover and cook about five minutes or until softened. Stir in garlic and cook about one minute. Stir in eggplant, zucchini, red and green peppers, sugar, basil and tomatoes. Bring vegetables to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 20–30 minutes. Stir in parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Makes about 8–10 cups. Cover and refrigerate for up to four days. For longer storage, spoon into freezer containers and freeze up to three months.

Sheila Blinoff a worthy recipient of award Continued from Page 2 “These women really did make a difference. I learned so much from them,” said Sheila. In 1972 there was a proposal to cut the heart of the community in half by extending the Gardiner Expressway to Scarborough. The plan was only stopped by a vigorous campaign of local residents who felt that a local newspaper would allow residents to keep involved about issues that were important to the area and help voice their concerns. Sheila started volunteering for the paper (then called Ward 9 News) by delivering papers door-todoor and typing copy on her home Smith-Corona. By December 1972 the volunteer founders of the paper had burned out and left. The paper was in debt. She answered an ad in the December (or early January issue) on the front page to hire three people for four months under a federal Local Initiatives Program. She was hired as the office manager and began work on Feb 2, 1973. The paper would have Book an estimate today!

folded in August when the LIP grant ended, but Sheila and Joan Latimer decided they would work without pay until the paper received a new grant. This is where she feels she made a real contribution to the community by ensuring the paper survived. They did this for six months, then the community raised $6,000, and they went back to receiving $100 a week and slowly the paper began to pay its way. One of the volunteers helping out with Ward 9 News was Roy Merrans who had a vision for the newly created Leslie Street Spit Park. Sheila became one of the founding members of the Friends of the Spit in 1975 and spent many weekends passing out flyers to people who visited the spit as well as getting them to become members. In 1976 the Main Street Library was one of four Toronto libraries being considered for additional funding for an expansion. Sheila was recruited by the Main Street Head Librarian, Helen Cram, to help increase the library’s usage and to select an architectural design. The group, also known as Maini-

acs, chose a proposal by Ken Greenberg, which received the additional funding. Sheila said that over the years she has served as secretary, treasurer and even president of a number of organizations, however, she believes that the job she enjoyed the best was secretary. “Keeping good minutes is so important. I always wanted people who hadn’t attended a meeting to understand what happened by just reading the minutes.” She served as Board Secretary at St. Paul’s United Church for four years when the congregation went through the process of selecting a new minister. From 2006 to 2012 she was the secretary/treasurer for the Scarborough Guild Theatre. This newly formed group established a professional theatre company that puts on an annual classical play each summer at the Greek Amphitheatre in the grounds of the Guild Park in Scarborough—a job that included storing costumes for the performances at her home. She was a founding member and secretary for the Beach’s Speeches branch of

Toastmasters. Between 1996 and 2003 she served as secretary, treasurer, and editor of the monthly newsletter; then president of the Pot Pourri Society, a non-profit social club with 60 members, offering 12 events a month to 50+ single people. In 1998 Sheila was secretary of a committee that organized a contest to name the five new streets in the housing development that replaced the Greenwood Race Track. And in 2000 she was a judge and secretary of a committee to select the 100 most influential people in the East End over the previous century. She also utilized another of her many skills when she created a quilt square for the sesquicentennial quilt (now located upstairs at the Main Library) and two squares for the Beach Library quilt. In addition to all of her organized volunteering, she has often lent her time and energy to flipping burgers, collecting food, staffing booths and helping out with whatever needed doing for many local projects. Sheila Blinoff is a worthy addition to the list of Beach Citizens of the Year.

Gables stories. Is there a self-deprecating Beach sense of humour? In the tradition of Ted Reeve or Glenn Cochrane, Patrick J. Adams describes himself on Twitter as the “guy who used to be the other guy on that show about lawyers.” He tweeted about his famous costar Meghan Markle, “I’m beginning to think she might not actually be out getting milk.”

Do you know how to write a terrific story or how to capture the perfect photo?
