Bluffs Food Bank marks 20 years as need for services keeps growing

AS THE Bluff’s Food Bank (BFB) prepares to mark 20 years of operation, its volunteers and workers worry about the steadily increasing demand for their services as Toronto’s affordability crisis shows no signs of slowing down.

Beach Metro Community News reported earlier this year that there has been a 40 per cent year-to-year increase in BFB client visits, but Beth Moore, the organization’s long-time secretary and board member, said that this number has now climbed to an increase of 60 per cent in the past few months.

“We’re proud of the way the relationships have worked to serve a need, but we’re sad that there is a growing need,” said Moore.

Bluffs Food Bank, which serves clients from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Birchcliff Bluffs United Church on East Road, has assisted Scarborough-Southwest residents since 2003 when five churches – Birchcliff Bluffs United, St. Nicholas Anglican, Birch Cliff, Fallingbrook Presbyterian, Scarborough Baptist and Fallingbrook Heights Baptist – banded together

RowOntario races on Woodbine Beach

to tackle pressures of food insecurity in the community.

“Those five churches continue to serve it today with volunteers, serving on the Board of Directors, and financially,” said Moore. “So, it’s been a real achievement to continue that relationship of five churches of different denominations.”

In an effort to go the extra mile, the food bank also started an income tax service in 2004 that has saved many clients money on service fees that other companies would have charged.

Although their mission began with just 24 families (42 individuals) being served due to financial hardships, just over a year later, their BFB service increased to 1,861 people.

Unfortunately, this number has continuously climbed through the years and today BFB is serving 1,200 families – comprising 3,000 people – every month.

In the past year, as many as 30,000 people have walked through the BFB doors seeking assistance. It’s been reported that 6,000 of those are children while 2,500 are seniors over the age of 65.

Shooting leads to provincial review of safe injection sites

ONTARIO’S MINISTRY of Health has launched a review of safe injection sites across the province after an innocent bystander was killed outside the South Riverdale Community Health Centre (SRCHC) last month.

On July 7, 44-year-old mother of two Karolina Huebner-Makurat was hit by a stray bullet while walking through the Leslieville neighbourhood as three men – across

Unleashed dogs focus of city campaign

AFTER A city-wide surge in incidents involving dogs that are off leash, the city held a press briefing in the Beach earlier this month urging dog owners to be responsible for their pet’s actions.

Jasmine Herzog-Evans, manager of the enforcement and mobile response unit at Toronto Animal Services, spoke at the foot of Lee Avenue about the recent surge in off-leash dog attacks across the city.

According to a city news release, the number of dogs attacks has surged by 39 per cent compared to 2021. Moreover, 2022 saw a 19 per cent increase in confrontations be-

the street from SRCHC – got into a physical altercation near the intersection of Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue which turned deadly.

The incident has sparked community outrage as residents in the surrounding area had long complained of increased criminal activity in front of the community centre which houses a safe injection site.

Although the safe injection site has been active since 2017, reports of an increase in crime only began

tween dogs and other animals.

This year, the city has imposed more than 44 dangerous dog orders and 168 written warnings for bylaw violations. These latest violent attacks encompass not only violent encounters with dogs but also incidents involving unleashed dogs, even those concerning children.

Last month, an East York mother of two was left with serious injuries after being mauled by a dog she encountered near her home. The owner was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

In 2021, a 69-year-old man in the Beach was hospitalized after breaking his pelvis when his bicycle collided with an unleashed dog on a

section of Martin Goodman Trail. The owner of the dog in that incident did not remain at the scene.

Beach residents have expressed numerous complaints about inadequate enforcement of leash laws. The city says “bylaw enforcement officers regularly monitor parks for off-leash dogs and respond to complaints and issues involving dogs.”

Herzog-Evans said bylaw enforcement is challenging because officers do not have the authority to demand identification from dog owners and they are often given fake or incorrect name and addresses.

Metal sculpture works by local artist Blandford Gates to be displayed at Skaut

ARTWORKS FROM Beach

resident and metal sculptor Blandford Gates will be displayed and up for sale at the Skaut design store on Kingston Road next month.

The exhibition and sale begins on Friday, Sept. 15, and carries on a long tradition at

Local Journalism Initiative

Skaut of supporting local artists and craftspeople.

Ines Korbes, owner of the Skaut design store at 874 Kingston Rd., said she wanted to showcase Gates’ work because she likes that his art is “handmade, upcycled and local art.”

His most famous sculptures will be displayed throughout the store including his well-known chess set, and animal sculptures that include dogs, cats and birds. Gates has been making metal sculptures for more than 40 years.

Originally from Newfoundland, Gates and his parents immigrated here when he was just five years old before Newfoundland was considered a part of Canada in 1949. Buying a house in 1970, he has lived in the Beach area with his family for more than 50 years.

Gates is an architect and he studied at the University of Toronto where he received honours and awards. He said that the foundation of his artistic mind stems from his studies.

“In architecture, there was always teaching of art

because you had to learn to draw and express your ideas… I got the founding of my art through my studies of architecture,” he said.

Gates first discovered a fascination for metal pieces as a result of walking on an abandoned beach and coming across pieces of metal along. He began collecting the pieces and storing them.

“I didn’t know why I was collecting them, I just got some sort of magnetic personality to them…later on as I looked at them I thought if I put pieces together I could create something,” said Gates.

“If I knew how to weld, I could make something of

these things,” he added, so he took a welding course and after that was how he began making metal sculptures.

Over the years, he acquired more interesting metal parts from family, friends and neighbours that knew his work and his need to find just the right pieces to complete various sculptures.

All the sculptures he creates are inspired by different themes. “I look for things among my collection that could be used to create different sculptures under a theme,” he said.

Throughout his sculpting career, Gates has made more than 100 sculptures. He said loves creating sculptures that evoke different emotions and have different messages behind them. He said he is also a lover of humour and enjoys making sculptures that are funny.

In the future, he hopes to market some of his sculptures to sell in order to collect the proceeds and donate it to the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

TORONTO’S BENGALI

community recently celebrated the publication of 15 books this year by Bengali authors living across Canada.

The celebration took place on Sunday, July 2, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11 on Dawes Road.

Chief Guest at the celebration was A. F. Moritz, the former Poet Laureate of Toronto. The event was chaired by Dr. Dilip Chakraborty, an eminent octogenarian Brampton scholar.

Initiated by the popular Bengali community television channel NRB and the weekly newspaper BanglaMail, the July 2 celebration was also addressed by Subrata Kumar Das, a noted Bengali writer and organizer, and Shahidul Islam Mintu, the editor of the Weekly BanglaMail and CEO of NRB Television.

In his speech, Moritz congratulated the authors of the new books and shared his experiences of reading Bengali legends such as Michael Madhusudan Dutt and Rabindranath Tagore. Moritz also recalled his previous literary involvements with the Torontonian Bengali community.

The authors whose books were celebrated included Akbar Hussain, Alina Mita, Atonu Das Gupta (from Halifax), Badal Ghosh, Debanjana Mukherjee Bhowmik, Jasim Mallik, Jakaria Muhammad Moyen Uddin, Mamunur Rashid, Nani Gopal Debnath, Roskana Pervin Shimul, Shahid Khandaker, Suchana Das, Suparna Majumdar (from Ottawa), Swapan Biswas and Tasmina Khan.

The new books were presented on the stage at the Legion hall, by Abu Sayed

are well known in the community for writing or reciting or singing. Momo Kazi read a Bengali translation of a poem by Moritz.

The celebration was sponsored by lawyer Omar Al Hasan Zahid and conducted by literary activist Samina Chowdhury.

Byelection to be held to fill council seat in Scarborough Southwest

TORONTO COUNCIL has officially declared Ward 20 Scarborough Southwest’s seat vacant, triggering a byelection for later this year.

The city clerk’s recommendation consisted of an option for council to fill the vacancy by appointing a qualified person to hold office, but council voted for a byelection instead.

A byelection date has yet to be set, but a bylaw mandating one will be passed on Sept. 6 with nominations beginning on Sept. 7.

A variety of factors “including holidays and ensuring adequate time for

the preparation of the byelection” will be considered when determining voting dates.

Until the byelection, staff of former councillor Gary Crawford will take care of Ward 20 matters. Crawford relinquished his seat to run for the Progressive Conservatives in the July 27 byelection held for the Scarborough-Guildwood MPP seat. The byelection, won by Liberal Andrea Hazell.

Community safety needs to be priority: councillor

‘Shooting’ from Page 1 in recent months.

So far, there have been three arrests made in connection with Huebner-Makurat’s death.

On July 13, police said Damian Hudson, 32, of Toronto, had been arrested and charged with second degree murder.

On Aug. 15, police said Ahmed Mustafa Ibrahim, 20, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, robbery, and failing to comply with probation. Also, Khalila Zara Mohammed, 23, of Pickering, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to an indictable offence and obstruction of justice.

Mohammed was an employee of SRCHC.

“We were distressed to learn that one of the individuals arrested and charged as an accessory after the fact and for obstruction of justice in relation to the July 7th shooting has been employed as a Community Health Worker at South Riverdale Community Health Centre since 2021 in Consumption and Treatment Services,” said a statement on the SRCHC website.

SRCHC said the employee was placed on leave “for unrelated concerns” on Aug. 9. SRHC said it had no more details about this individual’s alleged involvement, and

assured the public of its cooperation with police.

“These allegations are deeply concerning to us and our community,” said the statement. “They are also devastating and disappointing to the many SRCHC staff who work professionally and compassionately every day to deliver a range of essential health and wellbeing services to patients and clients in the area.”

A few days before the shooting, community members had raised concerns at an emergency meeting. They complained of public drug consumption, frequent drug deals, and increased acts of violence in the area.

Beach Metro Community News asked SRCHC for information on the increase in criminal activity outside the facility but received no comment.

Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher, who serves the Leslieville area, said that although SRCHC’s work aims to help addicts, there has been a missing component to their operation “since day one.”

“The safe injection sites are meant to save lives and keep people who are taking drugs safe,” said Fletcher. “But it can’t be unsafe for the people living in the nearby community.”

She said that although the focus has been on keeping

visitors inside the injection site safe, there needs to be a shift that also prioritizes the lives of residents outside the facility as well.

This community neglect has been highlighted by local residents who point to the fact that an injection site was placed just around the corner from an elementary school (Morse Street Public School).

“It was all approved by the federal government and by the provincial government,” said Fletcher. “Everybody knew [the school] was there. But the focus has been on keeping the clients safe rather than ensuring the community is safe.”

Considering that SRCHC is a provincially funded and mandated health centre, City of Toronto councillors such Fletcher “have no authority” in the matter and are unable to do much apart from lobbying Ontario’s government to take the Ministry of Health’s “critical incident review” as seriously as possible. “If this was a city site, I’d have much more capacity to give direction. But, I don’t,” said Fletcher.

Fletcher is urging the Province of Ontario to figure out how to provide safety for Leslieville residents by working with Toronto police, the health centre’s staff, as well as community members.

Lots of room for members in The Perfectly Imperfect Club

The Perfectly Imperfect Club. Imagine such a club exists! Would you like to sign up for it? I would!

I believe that perfectionism is like trying to maintain a 4.0 GPA with extra credit. While the intention is admirable, it’s important to remember that even straight ‘A’ students learn from occasional ‘B’s. Life, I believe, is a classroom where we’re meant to grow, not simply to perfect.

To alleviate my anxieties about being flawless, I created this fictional club for myself. Here are the fun rules I’ve established for The Perfectly Imperfect Club:

Rule 1 - Adventures over Accuracy: Life is like an open-ended essay; there’s no right or wrong answer, only unique interpretations.

Rule 2 - Dance to Your Own Beat: Celebrate your individuality and don’t be afraid to be different.

Rule 3 - The Art of Failing Forward: View

failure as not just a challenge, but also a rewarding lesson in the school of life.

Rule 4 - Use Procrastination to Your Advantage: Use your “down time” to relax, recharge, and come back more productive.

Rule 5 - Comparison is the Thief of Joy: Remember, comparing your journey to others’ only robs you of your own happiness.

Below is the entrance quiz to evaluate eligibility for the Perfectly Imperfect Club:

1. When you make a mistake, how do you usually react?

A.) I get upset and dwell on it.

B.) I analyze what went wrong and consider it a learning experience.

C.) I pretend it never happened and move on.

2. How often do you try new things, even if you’re unsure of the outcome?

A.) Rarely, I prefer sticking to what I know.

B.) Occasionally, if I’m feeling adventurous.

C.) Regularly, I love stepping outside my

A call to support independent journalism in response to Bill C-18

As a young Canadian journalist and a mother of four, I’ve been contemplating multiple angles of the ramifications of Bill C-18, or the Online News Act, and its potential implications for our democracy.

This legislation, designed to ensure fair compensation for news organizations, has sparked discussions about the accessibility and diversity of news, raising concerns for the informed engagement of our community.

I grew up in a home where access to news was highly valued. My parents both spent their lives involved in grassroots community organizations, working closely with not-forprofits, writing and contributing to protest papers, etc. As a child I delivered the Beach Metro newspaper on our street, and today I deliver the paper with my own children. As a journalist and a mother, I recognize the vital role of independent journalism in our communities.

It’s a lesson I work hard on teaching my children because wherever you end up getting it, journalism with integrity is a cornerstone of local engagement, fostering discussions on critical issues and empowering us with insights into matters that shape our lives.

The response of tech giants like Meta to this legislative framework, choosing to block Canadian news content over complying with the compensation model… it raises questions about the accessibility of news and the implications for a well-informed society.

Living in Toronto, where issues affecting our daily lives such as the housing crisis and the outrageously high (and ever-increasing) cost of living demand our attention, this newly imposed limitation on news access is a cause for concern.

Our reliance on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to gather news has been significantly affected. The potential consequences are unsettling – decisions that directly impact our lives might be made without our awareness.

Journalism is the bridge that connects us to our municipal developments, government decisions on all levels, and the challenges we collectively face. By restricting access to our news, these platforms have inadvertently halted our ability to engage with each other effectively as informed citizens.

As a mother, I’m particularly concerned about the long-term implications for our children’s future. The decisions made today shape the world they will inherit. I want my children to grow up in a society where they have real access to diverse perspectives and accurate information to make informed decisions.

Maintaining support for local, independent journalism is essential in addressing

this challenge. Beach Metro Community News, among others, plays a pivotal role in capturing the nuances of our community, keeping us informed about local initiatives, and sparking conversations that are crucial for progress.

To navigate these changes, I propose that we actively engage with local news outlets. By regularly checking websites such as Beach Metro’s at www.beachmetro.com, and subscribing to publications’ digital newsletters, we can ensure that the stories that matter to us continue to be accessible. This action is a testament to our commitment to staying informed and engaged as a community.

While it’s been convenient to solely rely on platforms like Facebook and Instagram for our news, we must remember that they are not the sole conduits of information and when they stop sharing our news, it will be up to us to stay

informed. Our support for local journalism reinforces the importance of a diverse news ecosystem and empowers us to actively participate in shaping the narrative of our city.

We find ourselves at a crossroads where our ability to engage with news outlets is being blocked, yet more than ever before engagement with those outlets is critical to maintaining the integrity of Canada’s news media landscape.

Bill C-18’s impact on news accessibility serves as a reminder of the necessity of independent journalism in our society. By taking steps to support local news outlets specifically, we can collectively ensure that our voices are heard, our concerns are addressed, and our city continues to progress with the well-being of our future generations in mind.

devils, “feats of the impossible”, and more.

The festival will also feature an array of food trucks, a beer garden, a family fun zone, nighttime programs and much more.

This year, the festival has also added a new component as it will also be welcoming the Bark in the Park celebration, which will include a dedicated area of the Woodbine Park for dog owners and their furry companions.

Bark in the Park will offer a range of activities, treats, and pet-centric vendors.

Picnic recipes for late summer and early fall

JaN MaiN

is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@ yahoo.ca

AH PICNICS! A vision of lounging on grass beneath spreading branches with an enticing basket of food comes to mind. A picnic can be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or fresh baguette with cheese, pate and pickles (and of course, a bottle of wine).

The food can be your heart’s desire depending on the time you want to take in

preparation and the preferences of the people involved.

Usually, picnics are part of a holiday. Therefore, the food needs to be special, favourites of the participants.

You may want to sample these picnic recipes?

The Big Sandwich

This sandwich is the inspiration of Rose-Mary Lamanna. It is a mouth- watering meal-in-itself, designed to satisfy the biggest appetite. Simply cut in half for a smaller serving.

The rectangular panino roll from Scarborough’s Montmartre Bakery is perfect for this hearty sandwich

- crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. It is also sturdy enough to hold the tasty fillings. (I have been using this family-run bakery happily for years and enjoy a number of their breads and pastries. It is located at 105 Midwest Rd., Lawrence and Midland area. To place orders by telephone, please call them at 416-757-7771.)

2 panini buns sliced horizontally almost in half like a book

2 tbsp (25 mL) pesto, commercial or homemade

2 tbsp (25 mL) sliced sun-dried tomatoes

with additional oil

4 tbsp (50 mL) marinated artichokes

4 slices provolone cheese

4 slices prosciutto or smoked chicken

2 handfuls arugula or washed and dried mixed salad greens

For each of the 2 sandwiches, spread a tablespoon of pesto on the half side of the bun, on the other half spread generously with the sun-dried tomatoes and some of the oil.

Place the 2 slices of cheese on the pesto side and the 2

slices of prosciutto or chicken on the tomato side.

Top each filling with a spoonful of the marinated artichokes then fill the center with arugula and close the sandwich carefully together keeping all the fillings inside. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and overwrap in foil. Refrigerate. Repeat for other sandwiches.

Sandwiches may be made the night before or an hour before packing the picnic basket. Pack a bread knife to slice the sandwich in half if desired.

Makes 2 generous servings or 4 smaller ones.

Scotch Eggs

Accompany this portable main course with your favourite mustard (Dijon), buttered crusty bread and a salad or veggies.

6 large eggs, hard cooked (instructions for cooking follow)

1 lb sausages, mild Italian, honey garlic or breakfast

1 slice bread made into fresh breadcrumbs

To hard cook eggs: Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water to cover at least 1 inch (2.5 mL) over

smoking and coke, and enjoyed over forty years living in the Beaches, continuing to sample every restaurant (notably The Bean and Vivetha), walks on the beach and weekly visits to the library. She lived at Forward Nine co-op for almost two decades, where she served on the board and founded a library for residents. Barbara collected original art and it almost felt like a gallery walking into her home. She donated to charities supporting homeless youth and environmental causes, among others.

Born in Toronto on Sept 1, 1938, Barbara grew up at Bloor and Dufferin with her mom Frances, dad Eric and little brother Bob. Girls were not encouraged to further their education at that time, so she dropped out of school after grade 9. She didn’t let her smarts and people skills go to waste, though. Barbara managed Children’s Circle daycare for a number of years, developing and nurturing a community of incredible people and friends. Unemployed during the 80’s recession, she studied and self-taught until she successfully passed many difficult government exams. She had a great career in human resources with Health Canada, with her family of co-workers, and considered it an honour to work in service to Canadians.

Doctors told Barbara that she could not get pregnant, but she somehow made the magic happen. She and then partner Norman Collier had their daughter Allyson after a surprise pregnancy. Through Norman, Ally gained brothers Paul and Chris, with whom Barbara formed a special relationship.

Post retirement, Barbara enjoyed cottaging and travelling with her daughter. She often visited her dearest friend Maureen in Ottawa, or spent time with friends

Tanya, Kelley, Pat, Vaughan and Sullivan. Barbara was known for being thoughtful, compassionate, loving and generous. Numerous people might tell you how she was like a surrogate parent for them, she was such a great listener, so accepting and caring.

After a brief negotiation with cancer, Barbara made the courageous decision to access MAiD, and took her destiny into her own hands on July 18, 2023. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to do an anonymous act of kindness for somebody in your neighbourhood to honour her. That was Barbara’s style.

We miss you mom. We miss you friend. We’ll have you in our hearts, forever.

Pat sausage portion into a flat patty and shape evenly around the egg sealing the edges.

Dip eggs into the bowl of breadcrumbs and roll to coat with crumbs. Repeat with remaining eggs to have 6 eggs covered in sausage meat then breadcrumbs.

Fruited Financiers

My friend made these delectable mouthfuls, an ideal finish to a special picnic.

4 eggs, separated (reserve yolks for other use)

1/4 tsp ( mL) salt

1/2 cup (125 mL) butter, melted

1/2 cup (125 mL) almond flour

1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar

1/3 cup (75 mL) all-purpose flour

Sliced strawberries or

halved raspberries

Icing sugar

Preheat oven to 400 (200 C). Spray 20 mini-muffin tins with baking spray.

Using electric mixer, beat egg whites with salt until stiff peaks form. (Yolks may be used in scrambled eggs.) Using a heat proof bowl, melt butter. Cool.

In separate bowl, stir together almond flour, sugar and all-purpose flour. Stir in cooled butter; fold in beaten egg whites.

Spoon equal quantities into about 20 mini muffin pans. Arrange a slice of fruit centered on top of each.

Bake 10-12 minutes or until a pale golden brown and firm to the touch.

Cool before serving. Sprinkle with icing sugar. Makes about 20.

Anniversary event set for Sept. 9

Rev. Angela J. Cluney, who is the Minister at Fallingbrook Presbyterian Church and also serves on BFB’s Board of Directors, said that this increase in food bank usage is happening “across the board”.

“It is going up significantly. There’s a greater need than ever for food” said Cluney. “With rising inflation, rent cost, healthcare needs, people are unable to pay for food when they have so many needs before them”

With multiple sources reporting less than one per cent of food bank users being homeless, it’s become evident that this is a problem that can easily affect anyone. BFB’s clients includes many families who have lost jobs. But they also serve people who have jobs but cannot make ends meet. “We’ve had a lot of people that have maybe never had to ask before, come and ask for food,” said Cluney.

The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and welfare rates that haven’t kept up with inflation have also affected the rise in food bank usage with many being forced to sacrifice health demands for food – or vice versa. Coupling To-

ronto’s existing needs with the influx of refugees seeking help, it is no surprise that many food bank shelves are running empty. The shortage has even hit Daily Bread – the main distributor for many of Toronto’s food banks – as it has had to reduce the amount of food it can give affiliate food banks.

BFB now finds itself in need of donations of eggs, soups, cold cereals, fresh dairy, meat, bread as well as fresh vegetables.

However, Cluney said cash donations are also vital to their operation as it lets them better cater to clients’ needs – some of whom can’t eat certain items due to religious beliefs.

With a fundraising goal of $120,000 by September 2024, BFB is hoping to put the funds towards important items that people don’t usually donate to food banks such as shampoo, “or a special kind of halal meat” for Muslim clients.

Cluney said that although the organization has budgeted appropriately, if needed, BFB can add to the budget through donation money. This allows for investment in items that enables clients a sense of dignity as they have more options and an ability

to create a proper meal for themselves.

“There has been a very positive response so far,” she said of the call out for donations. “We are encouraged and hoping that [the financial donations] will continue in the next couple of months–especially as we come closer to the anniversary.”

BFB’s 20th anniversary event is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Birchcliff Bluffs United Church, 33 East Rd. Known to promote the idea of “neighbours helping neighbours”, the anniversary event carries an open invitation as all residents are encouraged to come celebrate together with music, games and food.

As a 100 per cent volunteer-based organization, Bluffs Food Bank is always in need of more staff. Anyone who would like to help should contact info@bluffsfoodbank.com

Food donations can be dropped off at Birchcliff Bluffs United on Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. To make a financial donation, please visit https://bluffsfoodbank.com/donate

City bylaw says dogs must be on leashes

‘Unleashed’ from Page 1

The fine for allowing a dog to run off-leash, with the exception of one of Toronto’s 75 designated areas for offleash dogs, is $365.

In Toronto, all dog owners are required to keep their dog leashed, and the leash cannot be longer than two metres in length and must be attached to a collar or harness and held securely.

According to the city, when Toronto Animal Services receives information about a dog that has commit-

ted a dangerous act, they will respond within two hours if the dog is still on the loose, or within 24 hours if the dog is with its owner and under control.

In those cases, residents are encouraged to report dangerous incidents involving dogs.

The city needs people to come forward and share evidence in order to take enforcement action, said Herzog-Evans.

For more information regarding who to call and how

the city responds to dangerous incidents, visit the city’s dog attacks or bites website at www.toronto.ca/community-people/animals-pets/ pets-in-the-city/dogs-in-thecity/dog-bites-or-attacks/
