YMCA on Kingston Road to officially open doors Aug. 15 By Alan Shackleton
AFTER A long wait, The Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA on Kingston Road will be officially opening its doors on Aug. 15. And as of Wednesday, July 20, area residents are invited to sign up and book tours of the 63,990-squarefoot facility located on the south side of Kingston Road between Beech and Balsam avenues. Work on the new YMCA, which includes a condo building above it, first began with a ground-breaking ceremony in October of 2015. Opening had anticipated to be in October of 2020, but that did not happen. “Yes, it has not been the smoothest development process,” said Mehdi Zobeiry, General Manager of The Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA, during a tour of the facility with Beach Metro Community News on the afternoon of Friday, July 15. “Then it was impacted by COVID-19,” he added. “Two-and-a-half-years of pandemic threw a lot of things of out whack. But we had to have the building finished and safe (before we could open).” Excitement, and some frustration, has been building in the East Toronto community as the condos above were seen to be inhabited and people who looked through the ground-floor windows of the Y saw a full swimming pool. People were wondering why the facility had not yet opened and were confused by the delay. Zobeiry said he saw and heard that in his interactions with resi-

Beaches Jazz Festival’s StreetFest set for Queen Street East this week ONE OF the most popular events at the Beaches International Jazz Festival is back this week as StreetFest returns to Queen Street East on Thursday night. StreetFest takes place along Queen Street East between Woodbine and Beech avenues on the nights of Thursday, July 21, Friday, July 22, and Saturday, July 23. Between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on all three of those nights, more than 30 bands will be performing at locations along Queen Street East. For a complete list of locations and bands performing, please go to www.beachesjazz.com/streetfest As in the years before COVID-19, StreetFest will see Queen Street East between Woodbine and Beech avenues closed to vehicular traffic to make room for the crowds of music fans. The closures will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on all three nights of StreetFest. Also ve-
hicles will not allowed to be parked on Queen Street East in the area to be closed after 4 p.m. on July 21, 22 and 23 or they will be towed. Please note also for StreetFest that the route of the Main Street 64 bus will be changed to avoid Queen Street East. For safety and access reasons, Waverley Road, Lee Avenue and Wineva Avenue will open for through way traffic heading north and south from Queen Street East. Along with StreetFest, other events planned for the 34th annual Beaches International Jazz Festival this week include the TD Workshop Series Listen and Learn Concerts from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19; and Wednesday, July 20 at Beach United Church The July 19 concert will be by Juno Award-nominated vocalist Heather Bambrick. The July 20 concert will be by Caribbean Jazz Collective, an en-
semble made up of some of Canada’s best jazz artists representing our country’s diverse Caribbean diaspora. Members of the Collective include Eddie Bullen, Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo, Gareth Burgess, Neal Braithwaite and Andrew Stewart. Seating is limited for these Listen and Learn Concerts, and those wishing to attend are asked to please make sure they register in advance by going to www.beachesjazz.com/td-workshops This coming weekend will be the final one for this year’s festival OLG Weekend Series on the Main Stage at Woodbine Park is set for Friday, July 22; Saturday, July 23; and Sunday, July 24. dents while he was on site helping get the finishing touches done. “Every day when I’d open the door people were asking us when we were opening,” he said. “We know the community is looking forward to the opening and we have been hearing that a lot. We are very excited to be announcing the opening.” Nora Gorman, Senior Vice President Marketing Communications with the YMCA of Greater Toronto, thanked the community for its patience. “We are thankful for and appreciate the community’s patience,” said Gorman, who also took part in the July 15 tour with Beach Metro Community News. Run by the YMCA of Greater Toronto, the Stavro facility replaces the former East City Y at the site which was built in the 1950s. The East City Y was much smaller and did not have a pool. The new Y features three pools—a four-lane, 25-metre lap pool, with a ramp entrance making it fully accessible; a fitness and therapeutic pool with a movable floor to control the depth; and a whirlpool on the pool deck. The facility will also have a conditioning/weight room, multipurpose fitness studios, meeting rooms and a full-size gymnasium. Zobeiry said the Stavro Family Y will be a community hub for people of all ages and abilities since it fully accessible. “We are really looking forward to people coming in and using the facility,” he said. As is the case with many YMCA facilities, they quickly become community gathering places offering a wide variety of uses for residents which go beyond fitness and swimming and into programs for young people and seniors.. “There will be multi-purpose rooms for groups to use, and youth Continued on Page 4

Residents invited to Paint-A-Petal at Kingston Road United
The perfect balance between your life's philosophy & your budget
CALLING ALL Artists, young and old, you are invited to help paint a mural at Kingston Road United Church next month. On Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the highly visible mural will be painted on the construction boarding at the church located at 975 Kingston Rd.
The Paint-A-Petal event will help beautify the constructions site with colourful images of flowers while also supporting the church’s Raise Our Roof Fundraising project. Participants are encouraged to bring the entire family to join in this community project.
“Make your statement by painting our big, bold flowers (pay-what-you-can, suggested donation $25),” said organizer Violet Sadia. “This eye-catching artwork is designed to show that the church is still alive and kicking even while the 100-year-old slate roof is being replaced.”
While at the event, children (when they aren’t painting) can take part in a creative music workshop that will inspire painters with lively improvised music. The creative music workshop will be led by a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Tours of Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA can be booked starting tomorrow ‘YMCA’ from Page 1 leadership programs, places to meet…We have something for every age,” said Zobeiry. Since it is a charity, the YMCA of Greater Toronto puts a focus on including all community members in its programs and offers financial assistance for families who may need it to help cover costs associated with joining. “This is not just a fitness centre. It’s a place where kids learn to swim, kids get their first jobs as lifeguards, work at a camp or go to a camp, become youth leaders,” said Zobeiry. “We are a centre of the community as opposed to just a community centre.” In the news release announcing the Aug. 15 opening date, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toronto Medhat Mahdy said the facility will play an important role in helping bring life back to normal for many people after the pandemic. “We know the community has been keenly awaiting an opening date for The Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA and we can’t wait to open our doors,” said Mahdy. “We are confident this centre will help improve the physical and mental well-being of local residents – something that’s even more important as we emerge from the pandemic.” The new Kingston Road Y was made possible thanks to many donors who supported the YMCA’s Strong Start, Great Future Capital Campaign, including The Steve & Sally Stavro Family Foundation. The Y is named for the Stavro family’s deep connection to the east end Toronto community and their support for the charity, including a $1 million donation from the Steve & Sally

Stavro Family Foundation, said the news release. “A passionate sportsman, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Steve Stavro and his family settled into what was then the city’s emerging east end in 1932. The founder of the Toronto City Soccer Club, Stavro later became controlling owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors, bringing
the two franchises together to create Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment,” said the news release. “The centre’s naming was also supported with a $2 million gift from an anonymous donor and numerous contributions from additional donors. Together, our donors’ generous support means residents in Toronto’s east end are gaining expanded access to essential
services and inclusive community spaces.” To learn more or to arrange a tour of the Steve & Sally Stavro Family YMCA on Kingston Road as of July 20, please go to stavrofamily. ymcagta.org The opening of the new Y will be Aug. 15, but a formal grand opening celebration with dignitaries and special guests is expected this fall.

Youngsters from Variety Village in southwest Scarborough play the first official game at the new Roy Halladay Field in Highview Park on July 13.
Legacy of Jays pitcher Halladay lives on in Highview Park field THE LEGACY of late Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay will live on in southwest Scarborough as the field named after him officially opened on Wednesday, July 13. Roy Halladay Field, located in Highview Park in the Kennedy Road and Highview Avenue area, is Toronto’s first fully accessible baseball diamond. It was built in partnership with the Jays Care Foundation and the City of Toronto, and is specially designed for Challenger baseball which allows people of all abilities, including those with cognitive and physical disabilities, to play the game. On hand for the opening ceremonies were Roy’s wife Brandy and sons Braden and Ryan, Toronto Mayor John Tory, Scarborough Southwest Councillor Gary Crawford, representatives of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Variety Village. While in Toronto, the Halladay family was strongly committed to giving back to the community and in particular to helping children facing challenges. “One of our dreams when we were here was to build a field like this,” said Brandy. “To see this happen, Roy would have been so proud.” After the opening ceremonies and ribbon cutting, a
game was played on the field with young athletes from Variety Village, all of them wearing Blue Jays sweaters with the number 32 (Roy Halladay’s number) on them. “We get to live our dreams out through a field like this,” said Brandy just before the game began. “We are humbled to have his name on this field. He would be excited to see you guys play.” A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Halladay pitched for the Jays from 1998 to 2009 before joining the Philadelphia Phillies for the final four years of his pro career. Halladay died in a plane crash in November of 2017. Mayor Tory said he hopes Roy Halladay Field will be one of many more accessible sports facilities in Toronto. “We don’t spend as much time as we might to fully include those with differing abilities and to include them in the joys sports brings to all of us,” he said in his speech. “Roy’s interest and extraordinary caring to the people of this city stands as a testament to his character. He was all about hard work and caring. This is a place where we can continue to champion youth, and recreation and sports. Being inclusive in sports makes our city stronger.” While with the Jays, Roy
and Brandy started a program in which they helped kids in hospital and other youngsters facing challenges to attend games. Eventually this resulted in the creation of Doc’s Box at the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre). The tradition of Doc’s Box continues to this day at Jays games, and the home dugout at Roy Halladay Field is named Doc’s Box. Brandy said the program was one that was always of great importance to the Halladay family. “The City of Toronto is so special to our family,” she said. “There were so many fans we met through Doc’s Box and that really taught us the importance of giving back. I’m so proud of the Blue Jays that they continued Doc’s Box.” The Jays Care Foundation helps bridge the gaps and level the sports playing field for underserved or underrepresented communities through investments in facilities, programs and opportunities. It’s main focus is to provide support to Indigenous children and youth; children and youth with disabilities, children and youth living at or below the poverty line; and to girls sports. Roy Halladay Field serves Challenger baseball which is an adaptive version of the sport with modified facilities on which to play.

BEACH METRO COMMUNITY NEWS
In My Opinion
Vulnerable seniors taken advantage of by fraudsters Alan Shackleton Beach Metro News Editor
I
received a concerning note last week from Sheila Blinoff, current special advisor and former long time general manager of Beach Metro Community News, regarding frauds against a pair of vulnerable local seniors. The incidents took place towards the end of last month and earlier this month. I’ve been sent some of the details and would like to share them with our readers so they are aware that
there are people out there trying to take advantage of local seniors. This is being investigated by police at the moment and Beach Metro Community News has chosen not to use the names of those victimized or those who have been identified as taking part in the theft of the money through fraud. Basically, what happened was “a friendly guy” came over to talk to a local senior and suggested the home of his 84-year-old friend was in need of driveway and patio repair. The man promised to do a fair amount of work and the cost was to be $10,000 in cash. The victim agreed to pay for the work to help out his friend. A man who was with the com-
pany that said it would do the work actually drove the victim to a local bank to withdraw a $1,500 cash deposit. Now a teller at the first bank branch refused to hand over the money, but unfortunately the victim was then driven to a second branch where he withdrew the cash from an ATM with his debit card. This man who drove the victim to the banks of course stayed in his car both times. The victim, who has early stage dementia, is not sure if he was also driven to other bank branches. This is already a story that is making me angry and I look forward to a police news release in the
coming days announcing the arrest of the people who did this, but it gets worse. The victim’s friend has a Parkinson’s-like illness and is very frail. Despite very little work being done on her driveway and none on her patio, she was convinced by these “workers” that the cement in her basement needed to be restored. She gave these two men two bank drafts totalling $50,000. In an attempt to get even more money, one of the con men suggested the woman take out a line of credit loan on her house. No work has been started on the basement and the woman appears to have been conned out of her money.
Needless to say the family and friends of the victims are furious and are trying to chase down these fraudsters to help the pair get their money back. Hopefully this information will make local residents aware of this scam. There are a lot of seniors who have a huge amount of home equity and they are clearly becoming targets for con men (and women) who are trying to talk them out of their money. Please be aware of this and under no circumstances let someone take you to a bank to withdraw cash. Also, please have a trusted friend or family member look over any contracts for work around your house before agreeing to anything.

While my arguments sought to question a call for policing rather than to examine the response to the events at Woodbine Beach, I will admit that I am never enthusiastic about a police response. The letter writer and I clearly do not share the same views on the police and their purpose. A call for more policing is never a neutral event, but rather is informed by one’s experience with the institution. Simply believing that the police serve and protect is a bias, and one that is not shared by all. Social psychologists and laypeople
alike will find easily accessible data showing that more police does not result in more safety for all (or at all). Black and Indigenous people are stopped, arrested and incarcerated at much higher rates for the same crimes committed by white people. Crime is not neutral. Law is not neutral. And, though the Toronto Police Service is allocated more money every year, comprising the lion’s share of our city’s budget, they were unable to prevent the violence at Woodbine Beach on the May long weekend. My previous letter was meant to encourage my community to be imaginative in their response to safety, rather than to fall back on the tired, and quite frankly ineffective call for more police. I am writing again to reiterate (and perhaps clarify) that point. Britt Caron
In 1998, the film Pleasantville came out depicting a 1950s’ utopia town that Toby McGuire and Reese Witherspoon entered that in fact was a uniform, grey, conforming, stifling and oppressive town. In derision and with a sense of superiority, Beach residents named the then new development west of Woodbine Avenue and south of Queen Street East and north of Lake Shore
Boulevard East as Pleasantville. I was surprised in a recent story to read Beach Metro Community News and BeachesEast York Councillor Brad Bradford actually call the community Pleasantville. Has the name been embraced without its origin known? If true, that irony is worthy of the movie. Steve Bain
Beach Metro volunteer says thanks to resident for act of appreciation A lovely thing happened recently as I was delivering Beach Metro Community News. Craig Nicholson of Hambly Avenue told me how much he appreciated my efforts and presented me with a Tim Hortons’ gift card.
After thanking him, I said he’ll more than likely see his name in Beach Metro Community News one day -- the publishing of this letter for starters. Fauna Coates

New gun control bill addresses some concerns of Danforth Families for Safe Communities Fourth anniversary of Danforth Shooting is this Friday By Alan Shackleton
THE FOURTH anniversary of the Danforth Shooting is this Friday. The shooting on the night of July 22, 2018 in the Danforth and Logan avenues area took the lives of 18-yearold Malvern Collegiate grad Reese Fallon and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis of Markham. Thirteen other people were wounded in the shooting. After the shooting, the group Danforth Families for Safe Communities was formed in an effort to strengthen gun control laws in Canada and especially as they relate to handguns. With the introduction of a new Bill C-21 by the federal government at the end of May, members of the group feel Canada is starting to head in the right direction when it comes to meaningful control of handguns. “I do think the government listened to a variety of voices, including gun owners (hence a freeze for handguns, not a ban and buy back, and exceptions for Olympic pistol shooters), but yes, I feel like a number of victims and survivors from across the country were given the opportunity for input,” said Ken Price of Danforth Families for Safe Communities. Price’s daughter Samantha was wounded in the Danforth Shooting. The weapon used in the Danforth Shooting was a handgun that had once been legally owned but was stolen and eventually sold illegally. Bill C-21 sees restrictions that will make ownership of a handgun more difficult, but it falls short of a complete ban of them in Canada. It does, though, put a federal freeze on the sale, purchase or transfer of handguns for the overwhelming majority of citizens. Only those specially designated, such as police and certain sport pistol shooters, can continue to buy and sell handguns. An earlier version of the Bill, which would have seen the responsibility for handgun control fall to municipal-
ities, was not well received by gun control advocates including Danforth Families for Safe Communities. Price said the Bill C-21 introduced on May 30 by Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino is better and more along the lines of what his group was looking for. “Eventually we see this as a phasing out of handguns the format of firearm most frequently used in crimes,” he said. “The prior Bill C21 proposed to deal with this community by community and/or province by province, an approach with which we had strong disagreement.” However, there are still many concerns surrounding Bill C-21 including the number of handguns in Canada and the movement of them, said Price. “Existing handgun owners who comply with the law can continue to use and own their existing handguns,” he said. “We are concerned with the risk posed by the million handguns out there, but the number will stop growing, which it has been doing at ~55,000 per year over the past five years. And with it the growth of straw purchasing, diversions, lost weapons, theft, and crime by license holders. And yes, we know that a portion of crime guns are illegally imported, but the domestic supply contributes far too often, as it did in our case.” Price said there were two items not addressed by Bill C-21 that Danforth Families for Safe Communities would have liked to see included. “We are concerned that there is no cap on the number of guns an individual can own,” he said. “Also, we hoped that accessories for guns, such as magazines, would need a PAL (possession and acquisition licence) as the guns themselves and ammunition do. In our case, the perpetrator purchased additional magazines with a credit card from a local gun trailer, even though he did not have a gun licence.” Beaches-East York MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith
told Beach Metro Community News that this version of Bill C-21 is an improvement on the earlier one and that came about by listening to both experts and those personally impacted by gun violence. “We were able to improve the previous legislation by listening to experts and people affected by gun violence, including the Danforth Families for Safe Communities,” said Erskine-Smith. “Many of us in the Liberal caucus were vocal about the need to take more serious action, and it was good to see Minister (Marco) Mendicino and his team engage meaningfully with advocates in our communities.” Along with the freeze on handguns, Erskine-Smith said the new legislation also makes it harder to get a gun. “On a going forward basis, an individual citizen will no longer be able to acquire a handgun for personal possession,” he said. “The proposed legislation will also make it easier to remove firearms from someone who poses a danger to themselves or others and to revoke firearms licences in cases of domestic violence or criminal harassment.” Erskine-Smith he would have also liked to see a ban on the private possession of handguns in Bill C-21, and hopes that may come in the future. “I had advocated for a ban on the private possession of handguns and to strengthen commercial storage rules. The law already requires that a handgun can only be used in a licensed facility, and there’s a similar value in ensuring storage at a licensed facility,” he said.. That is something Danforth Families for Safe Communities has also called for. Erskine-Smith said Bill C-21 also looks to take on the root causes of gun crime in communities and to toughen Canada’s borders against the smuggling of illegal weapons. Beach Book Club pot luck recipes set the stage for summer fun Coleslaw
Jan Main is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@
THE BEST recipes come with a guarantee from friends that they are their favourites. Better still, if you have a chance to taste them for yourself, you know they will work for taste and preparation. At a recent potluck of my Beach Book Club, I “recipe wrestled” for these as summer recipes with appeal. Here they are:
3 cups (750 mL) shredded cabbage (you could substitute nappa or bok choy) 2 cups (300 mL) shredded red cabbage 1 red pepper, sliced 1 cup (250 mL) snow peas or asparagus, blanched and sliced 4 green onions, chopped 1/3 cup (75 mL) each, dried cranberries, chopped apricots or toasted almonds Dressing
Asian Coleslaw Liz Schumann’s marinated coleslaw is a perfect summer dish – something that can be taken on picnics or camping trips, marinates in the refrigerator for up to a week. It can be used as a salad or a topping. It’s versatility both in ingredients and use make it a “must” for easy summer food preparation.
1/3 cup (75 mL) light coconut milk 1/3 cup (75 mL chopped fresh coriander or parsley 2 tsp (10 mL) fish or oyster sauce (optional) 2 tsp (10 mL) packed brown sugar or granulated sugar 1 tbsp (15 mL) fresh lemon juice 1 clove minced garlic 1 tsp (5mL) each, grated
fresh ginger and hot pepper sauce (to taste)
one below.
black pepper Salad
In a large mixing bowl, combine cabbage, green and red pepper, asparagus or snow peas, red pepper, onions, cranberries, apricots and / or almonds. In a large measuring cup, whisk together coconut milk, coriander, fish sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice, garlic, ginger and hot pepper sauce if using. Pour over cabbage mixture tossing to coat ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for up to a week. May be used immediately or kept marinating to use within a week. Makes about 6 cups (1 ½ L) or 8 servings. Quinoa, Kale and Chick Pea Salad Vivien Lepper contributed this hearty grain and chick pea salad ideal for toting to potlucks and outdoor dining. It makes a tasty lunch or simple supper. Use your own favourite vinaigrette to dress this salad or try the
2 cups (500 mL) quinoa, cook according to package directions 1 bunch kale leaves (4 cups/ 1 L), stems removed 2/3 cups (175 mL) dried cranberries, currants or raisins 1 can (19 oz/540 mL chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 red or yellow pepper diced 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh, chopped Italian parsley 1/2 cup (125 mL) finely chopped green onion Dressing or use favourite vinaigrette 1/2 cup (125 mL) olive oil 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh lemon juice 1 large clove garlic minced 1 tsp (5 mL) each, curry or cumin and salt 1/4 tsp (1 mL) fresh
Cook quinoa according to package directions. Cool to room temperature. (This step could be done the night before) Tear the kale leaves into bite sized pieces massaging them to improve texture and flavour. Add the quinoa and kale leaves to a large bowl with cranberries, chickpeas, red pepper, parsley and green onion. In a jar, shake together the olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, curry, salt and black pepper until well combined. Pour over the grain and vegetable mixture tossing to coat. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes about 8 servings. Fennel Vinaigrette This was Carolyn Jung’s vinaigrette which she served over a fresh tomato cucumber salad but it can be served over salads of all sorts. Carolyn also uses it warm over barbecued meat and
fish as a sauce. For best flavour, make a day ahead of serving to allow the vinaigrette to mellow. The ratio for this salad is one part vinegar to three parts oil. 1/4 cup (50 mL) red wine vinegar or balsamic or white vinegar 3/4 cup (175 mL) olive oil, canola or grape seed oil 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard 1 clove garlic, crushed (optional) 1-5 shakes hot pepper sauce depending on how hot you like it 1-2 tbsp fennel seeds depending on taste desired Use a straight sided jar. Combine the red wine vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, garlic if using, shake of hot pepper sauce and 1 tbsp of fennel seeds. Shake vigorously. Refrigerate overnight and shake again before serving over salad.

Indigo Bunting is one of Ontario’s prettiest birds feather colour is actually black. Thanks to their feathers’ ability to refract light, when they are seen in the light they look blue. Blue is an incredibly rare colour to occur in nature, and several animals that we think are blue are actually just doing similar tricks. Blue Jays and Bluebirds? Not really blue! Look it up! Male Indigo Buntings whistle bright, lively songs of sharp, clear, high-pitched notes that last about two seconds, and they have more

DO YOU remember being a little kid and being very concerned with picking a favourite colour? It was a big deal back then, like having a favourite number. Whenever my grandkids tell me about their favourite colours, they often follow up by asking about mine. Though it’s so hard to pick, I’ll usually tell them about a special shade of blue called indigo. When they ask me why, I try to talk to them about one of the prettiest birds we have in Ontario: The Indigo Bunting (Passerina Cyanea). At this point they usually get bored and run away, but I’m hoping you, dear reader, are going to continue with this story. These birds stand out to me because I only spot them on rare occasions. The females are basically brown and could easily be mistaken for a sparrow. The males, however, are such a distinctive blue that you can’t possibly mistake them for anything else. They are rather tiny birds, which makes identifying them at a distance difficult as well. In all my years as a photographer, I’ve only managed to get a handful of decent shots of them. Though I can check them off

On The Wild Side columnist Ann Brokelman writes that it is one of the prettiest birds in Ontario. my ‘to see’ list, I don’t have a picture of them that I’m happy with. But some day I will. The other day, I was out and about and had one of my best series-of-random-birdsightings ever. I was just driving down a side road when a male Pileated woodpecker, being chased by another woodpecker, zipped across the road. They began to chase each other around a hydro pole, so I pulled off to the side and watched the show. Pileated woodpeckers aren’t uncommon for me to see, but the chase was something new. Just as they flew off into the trees, and I looked over my shoulder
to check for traffic before I pulled back onto the road, a beautiful American Goldfinch landed a few metres away and began disassembling a plant into nesting materials. These gorgeous, yellow birds are always a welcome sight, and of course the idea of them getting ready for chicks brings a smile to my face. When this bird flew away, a few seconds later, I turned my car on, looked for traffic again, and began to pull forward. It was at this moment when an Indigo Bunting popped onto a tree branch right in front of my car! My jaw dropped, and I’m sure I let out an excited
squeal. (Thankfully nobody was around to hear it!) Sadly, he only stayed for a few moments, and I barely even had a chance to reach for my camera before he was gone. Despite the lack of a picture for my collection, I’ll happily take the sighting any day. Both male and female Indigo Buntings are the size of a common sparrow: 11.5 to 13 centimetres. Interestingly, the male buntings will have different colours depending on season. They are a vibrant blue while in the breeding season and then a dull brown/black in the off season. Now, even more interesting is that the male’s true
than 200 distinct songs. Like many birds they migrate at night using the pattern of the stars to guide them. They can live for one to 15 years, and a group of bunting are called a decoration, mural, or a sacrifice. Buntings are mostly insectivores, so they love to eat bugs, flies, spiders, etc, but they might still be attracted to your yard’s bird feeders. Let me know if you see any this summer! Bye for now!

Black Lives Here
What it means for me to be a Canadian Mimi Liliefeldt mimi@missfit.ca
A
s the country wrapped up another Canada Day, I found myself conflicted. It used to be an unfettered celebration of red and white, an excuse to plaster the maple leaf everywhere and possibly, to be plastered oneself. But the last few years have revealed that we can’t suppress our past anymore. So, what does it mean to acknowledge July 1st in the present? This is an individual answer. One of the reasons we love our country is that we are free to choose what, how, and who we love. When I asked myself this question, I had to first tackle what it means for me to be a Canadian. In this column we have discussed the privilege of being white many times, and again in this dissection of what it means to be Canadian, it came up for me. I am the first of my family on either side (South Africa and Japan) to be born in Canada. I always considered it a great source of pride and good fortune, and I still do. However, many times in my life (and no doubt many times in the future) I have been asked, “Where are you from?” When my response is given, it is usually one of two reactions: One, a look of doubt and surprise (as though I might not have understood the question) or two, a follow up question that the individual believes will clarify things, “No, but where are you REALLY from?” I can tell you sincerely, this hurts me. The message is loud and clear. Me with my Black and Asian features, does not belong here. It makes me sad to even write this sentence, but it’s true and you need to hear it. The privilege of being white in this country is the assumption and entitlement
PHOTO: MIMI LILIEFELDT
Mimi Liliefeldt has been writing the Black Lives Here column in Beach Metro News since July of 2020. that you deserve to be here more than I do. Most good people would never outright believe this to be their thinking, but it’s built into the system that you should believe this. You believe it without knowing you believe it. I know this is true because I have believed it. And in a ridiculous display of hypocrisy taught to me by our forefathers, I also believed I had more right to be here than someone who wasn’t born here. This is not a thought I consciously had before writing it, but I know that somewhere deep in my naïve core I once thought this. In the two years that I have spent writing this column (this month is the official anniversary), I have met many different Canadians with a wide range of journeys. But what they all had in common was their love for Canada. In May of this year I spoke with Barb Nahwegahbow, a local Indigenous artist. Barb not only shared her story but also enlightened me on what this land means to Indigenous people. How they have cared for it and lived in harmony with it as the original inhabitants, and how they constantly must fight for it and their own
basic rights. The discord between Canada Day supporters and opposers is sad and possibly misunderstood. I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I felt a deep need to acknowledge the pain of our past and yet still was appreciative of what I have in this country in my present. Admitting our faults as a country does not diminish what we can be thankful for. But something to think about is that the way we got here wasn’t the only way, what did we miss out on by not choosing another path? When I think of us as Canadians and how we like to be seen by the world, we are always proud be to recognized as polite, worldly and diverse. For the most part I agree with this image and want to keep perpetuating it. How we preserve this image is by doing “the work”. The much talked about and never-ending work. For clarity, the work is educating ourselves and each other about systemic and social racism, listening to BIPOC and believing them when they tell you what’s going on for them, actively pursuing equality and inclusivity in your workplaces, sports teams and community spaces – diver-
sity is pointless if the person doesn’t feel like an equal. It’s not just about giving them a seat at your table; it’s about letting them know they have an equitable say in discussions and decisions at that table, that their voice is of value. It is also about being a good bystander and not letting the aggressions, both macro and micro, go unaddressed. Countless times good people have stood by and done nothing because they didn’t want to embarrass anyone. It’s too late, the victim has already been humiliated. Why does the aggressor get to be spared? The ways in which you can do the work are countless and, yes, they take considerable effort. But anything less is lip service. And so, I piece together a picture of what it means to me to be a Canadian. I am a Canadian in my birthright and in my parents’ immigration and adoption of this country. I am a Canadian in my privilege of living on this beautiful and diverse land. I am a Canadian in my care and activism for those who have gone before us to sacrifice so much. And I am a Canadian in my need to honour and
raise up those who march forward regardless of their vulnerability. As a result of this soul search, I concluded that for me, I will acknowledge July 1st as a day to take action: A day to honour, support and spread the word for our Indigenous communities, and a day to reflect, and a day to be thankful that I have the privilege of living in this country. During the pandemic we plastered the words, “we are all in this together”, literally everywhere. For me this statement goes beyond the pandemic. What I have learned over the last two years is that if you live here, no matter how you got here, you are part of this country. We are all in this together, we are all Canadians. ...
Dear reader and anyone who has supported me in the last two years of writing this column, I want to say thank you. I write it because I really hope that hearing these voices, and my own, will help foster more understanding and closeness in our community. I will be taking a small hiatus and returning with the column in October. If you know a BIPOC member of our neighbourhood that would be willing to share their story I hope you’ll encourage them to reach out to me. The more voices we hear, the more perspectives we will have and that benefits all of us. Mimi Liliefeldt is a Beach resident and business owner. She can be reached at mimi@missfit.ca
Correction The ‘Black Lives Here: Thrive owner Brian Kotoka helps make an impact on lives of others’ column that started on Page 5 of the June 14 edition of Beach Metro Community News requires correction. Due to a page layout error, the words “For many people” incorrectly appeared at the
start of the column’s opening sentence. Those three words should not have been there and the opening sentence should have read: “May 25, 2022 marked the two-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder.” Beach Metro Community News regrets the error.
Open Doors: Spiritual Matters
A welcome to St. John’s Norway both inside and out of church Rev. Molly Finlay St. John the Baptist Norway Anglican Church
I
n case anyone was checking, it’s been a crazy couple of years for everyone—but try shifting an institution that is thousands of years old into the 21st Century! No wonder your ministers, imams, rabbis and priests look like Lloyd Christmas after he’s gone through the wind tunnel in Dumb and Dumber. Sometimes, as an Anglican Priest myself, I scratch my head and say to myself: “Whelp, that sure was a thing!” We are all pooped. But we need each other—in community, more than ever! And we need to be growing spiritually and sharing acts of peace, love, and justice with each other more than ever! In my context, I have had more conversations with folks about their deepest spiritual questions in the last two years than I’ve ever had before. We weren’t able to avoid
coming to terms with these great questions—including the purpose of life and our mortality, during all those months of lockdown. Beautiful things started happening in the last couple of years too. More outreach We knew that lots of people were hurting and hungry, and so lots of churches and houses of worship started doing more outreach. One place I know nearby launched an extra weekly meal program to meet the needs of folks who need the help. Here at St. John’s Norway, our people opened a simple Food Pantry which is still going strong—and we are so grateful to be able to get to know and serve our neighbours in this way. The other thing that we are learning is that our parish is really called to be an inside-out kind of place. Sure, we have a gorgeous historic building, but we are spending lots of time in our parking lot welcoming neighbours to BBQs and
other special events. We are experiencing a lot of joy doing it! Open for Prayer And this summer, we continue to open our doors on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon for “Open for Prayer” where anyone is welcome to come and have a bit of peace and quiet in the middle of the busyness of life. You are also welcome to drop by any morning of the week to enjoy the space. And if you’d like to donate or help out at our Food Pantry, give us a call at 416-6914560 or by email at: admin@ stjohnsnorway.com It’s so good to be part of this incredible neighbourhood—and we look forward to welcoming you at St. John’s—whether it is inside or out of our Woodbine Avenue and Kingston Road address. With blessings from all of the people of St. John’s. The Reverend Molly Finlay is Rector, at St. John the Baptist Norway Anglican Church at Woodbine Avenue and Kingston Road.

A TRUSTED NAME IN BEACH REAL ESTATE FOR OVER 33 YEARS I KNOW WHO’S #1 IN BEACH REAL ESTATE... YOU ARE!
‘Happy motoring’ with Esso on Queen Street East and Maclean Avenue in the Beach By David Van Dyke
Murray Seymour sent me this incredible image along with his text and story. Again, I turn over my pen to our readership. Thank you Mr. Seymour for this time capsule photograph! If you have an old photograph of the Beach, why not share it with our readers and contact me gdvandyke61@gmail.com “What a great, great feeling, What a wonderful sense…… “If you recognize these lyrics to this tune then you are probably a Canadian male of the baby boomer vintage whose favourite colours are blue and white. “Oh, the Leafs failed again to drink from the elusive cup, but when this photo was taken there was a good possibility that Toronto would soon be hosting a Stanley Cup parade up Bay Street. “ESSO was a proud sponsor for Hockey Night in Canada and commercials featured actor Murray Westgate assuring us that life was good at 37 cents a gallon (9.76 cents a litre).

“Mr. Westgate dressed much like this service station attendant at the Esso Station at the south-east corner of Queen Street East and Maclean Avenue. The gentleman in the spiffy blue suit did not need to pump his own gasoline for his Royal Blue 1956 Chevy on this sunny morning. “Mr. Blue Suit was a friend of my parents. This photo was taken from the south side of the street in the service station lot (circa 1960). The buildings on the north side of Queen still stand in 2022. You will notice diamond shapes in the brickwork. “Back then as a young boy, I assumed that Murray Westgate was an actual gas jockey for Esso. Not so. He was an accomplished Canadian entertainer. He lived to be 100 years old. I particularly remember him because we have the same first name. “Now, where was I? Oh ya… “…of sheer enjoyment and of confidence, If there’s something you’re aware of, your car’s been taken care of, At the Esso sign of confidence, At the happy motoring sign…”

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto
Jock Carroll photographed both Marilyn and Elvis Bernie Fletcher
M
arilyn... Elvis... we know them by their first names even after all these years. Their legends live on in two new biopics. Elvis is a summer hit while Blonde is a highly anticipated film coming to Netflix in September. One Beacher knew and liked them both on their brink of stardom. “Your candle burned out long before your legend ever did.” -- Elton John It was a tough assignment, but someone had to do it. Jock Carroll had been a war correspondent in Korea, but in June of 1952 Weekend Magazine sent him to Niagara Falls to photograph and interview a rising actress. Marilyn Monroe was in the Honeymoon Capital for her first starring role in the thriller Niagara. The movie featured one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world...and the Falls weren’t bad either. Photographer, journalist, editor and author Carroll travelled around the world, but always came back to his home on Fallingbrook Road. His father Frank Carroll was one of Canada’s best-known sports figures, a pro boxer, Olympic coach, trainer on two Stanley Cupwinning Toronto hockey teams (1914 and 1918) and the Toronto NHL head coach with the highest winning percentage ever (1920-21). Frank Carroll lived on Queen Street East at Beech Avenue, then moved to Lakeview Avenue which was renamed Fallingbrook Road soon Jock’s birth in 1919. Jock was a star athlete at Malvern Collegiate and served as a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot in the Second
Beacher Jock Carroll photographed both Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley when their careers were starting in the 1950s. World War. He spent 20 years working for Weekend Magazine. One month before meeting Marilyn in Niagara Falls, Carroll honeymooned at the very same hotel overlooking the Falls. He was to take photos and interview the 26-year-old starlet for two days, but they got along so well he stayed for two weeks. Hey, who can blame him? He helped her shop, practice smoking for a role and even drove her across the border to send a sweater to Joe DiMaggio.
rapher, about a young writer and a Hollywood beauty. Carroll had a knack for being in the right spot at the right time. He profiled Elvis in the summer of 1956 when the King of Rock and Roll burst on the television scene. Carroll was there when Hound Dog caused a sensation. Elvis’s manager, Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks in the movie Elvis) asked Carroll if he wanted to come on tour with Presley. Carroll really liked the polite, young singer, but didn’t think that rock n’ roll was here to stay and declined the offer. That year Carroll interviewed Beacher Glenn Gould on the Boardwalk and spent two weeks in Nassau with the piano prodigy seeing the playful side of the eccentric musical genius. Carroll also wrote about his neighbour and friend Arthur Hailey just before the huge success of Airport led Hailey to forsake Fallingbrook Road and move to California’s sunny climes. As a kid I knew Jock Carroll as an avid golfer and bon vivant around Scarborough Golf Club. I’ll bet he had a lot of great stories to tell!

“We are all of us stars and we deserve to twinkle.” -- Marilyn Carroll saw the vulnerable person behind the glamour, describing Marilyn as “friendly, charming and always late.” She opened up about her difficult childhood, her depression, her hopes and her wish to be taken seriously as an actress. She liked to read a lot and was no “dumb blonde”. Marilyn loved the camera and the camera loved her. Carroll took more than 400 photos which were published as Falling for Marilyn after his death in 1995. Among his nine books was a novel, The Shy Photog-
