Beach dog walkers raise funds for Ukraine

Proposal adding height, depth to Kingston Road property approved By Alan Shackleton

A PROPOSAL to add height and depth to a storefront in Kingston Road Village has been approved by the city’s Committee of Adjustment (CoA) Toronto and East York Panel. The request for a minor variance to permit the building of two additional storeys on the storefront site at 955 Kingston Rd., and to also extend at the four-storey height to the rear of the lot, was approved at the CoA’s April 27 online hearing. The site of the proposal is on the south side of Kingston Road, between Scarborough Road and Silver Birch Avenue. The building is part of a connected row of two-storey build-

“There is a huge loss of light there and the loss of my garden,” said Nosko. She uses the large garage at the back of the lot to hold concerts, art and photo exhibitions, readings and other events including weddings. After the CoA’s ruling, Nosko posted a statement on Facebook on April 28 thanking those who had sent letters, come in to chat with her and signed petitions highlighting the importance of The Great Escape Book Store to the community. “The C of A approved the proposal as it is in line with the City plan for mixed use density building on these main streets. We will do our best to work with what comes next. Blessings all :),” she wrote in her Facebook post. Aerial spraying set for Glen Stewart Ravine to control LDD Moths LOCAL RESIDENTS and the City of Toronto are being called upon to do their part to help control the numbers of LDD Moths in the Beach area. Valerie Edwards, who lives near Glen Stewart Ravine, said the moths are taking on enormous toll on oak and other trees in the community. She said the situation is a “neighbourhood emergency” and the time to take action to stop the hatching of the moths is right now. “Our oak trees are critical to how we define ourselves as a neighbourhood,” said Edwards. She is urging local residents to check the trees on their properties for evidence of egg masses (which are usually an amber colour) and if they find them, to scrape them off and dispose of them in plastic bags in the trash. Simply knocking the egg masses off the trees onto the ground does not prevent them from hatching. The LDD Moth is a non-native species that can wreak havoc on tree foliage. There are four phases to the moth’s life cycle: egg, caterpillar, cocoon and moth. The egg phase is when residents can spot the clumps of eggs, hundreds or even thousands at a time, stuck to surfaces such as tree trunks but also on exterior walls of buildings and even on patio furniture. In spring, as the weather gets warmer, the eggs hatch and the caterpillars begin their journey up the tree trunks to feast on leaves. This defoliates the trees at a critical time and puts them in danger of not surviving. On average, one caterpillar can consume one square metre of foliage. Along with the egg clumps, residents can also be on the lookout for the caterpillars climbing up trees. They can be identified by distinctive red and blue dots that appear as they begin to moult. If spotted, residents are encouraged to pick

them off the trees and dispose of them. Residents can also consider having trees on their properties treated to prevent infestations. Another option is burlap banding which helps to stop the caterpillars from climbing up trees. Information on burlap banding can be found at www.toronto.ca/wpcontent/uploads/2020/02/8b53-european-gypsy-moth-resident-makeburlap-caterpillar-trap.pdf Also, to help control the LDD Moths, the city will be undertaking two rounds of aerial spraying in the Glen Stewart Ravine this spring. “As we’ve learned in the past, it’s so important for us to take preventative action against the LDD Moth infestation that has been ravaging Southern Ontario the last few years,” said Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford. The city’s Forestry Health department will be planning the spraying for between May 16 and June 15. Residents in affected areas will be notified by the city 48 hours in advance. The aerial sprays will be done by helicopter in times of calm winds and no precipitation. The spraying will be using Foray 48B Biological insecticide Aqueous Suspension with the active ingredient Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk). The city says “Btk poses minimal risk to human beings, and it has been used by the City of Toronto during other aerial sprays many times.” However, residents wishing to avoid exposure during spraying are advised to stay indoors “during and after” the immediate spray time. “To remove Btk off any outdoor surfaces, like patio furniture, you can wipe it off with a damp cloth and soap,” the city said. For more info on the city’s plans for spraying locally, go to www. toronto.ca/services-payments/water-environment/trees/forest-management/threats-to-trees-insects/ european-gypsy-moth/

ings with mostly storefronts at street level and apartments above that was built in the 1920s. The proposal had raised many concerns in the community over the impact it would have on neighbouring businesses, in particular The Great Escape Book Store at 957 Kingston Rd., and how it would alter the streetscape of the existing row of buildings. A large number of letters of objection were filed with the CoA prior to its meeting. The Great Escape is a beloved institution in the area, and the location has been a book store for decades. It was known as Ed’s Books for many years before the name was changed to The Great Escape in the 1990s. Katya Nosko, owner of the store, said she will lose light and the appeal of the area at the back will be impacted by this proposal.

LONGTIME TORONTO Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) Trustee Angela Kennedy will be running for the Progressive Conservatives in the riding of Beaches-East York in the upcoming provincial election. Kennedy has been a trustee representing the TCDSB’s Ward 11, which includes East York, the Beach and part of North York, for more than 20 years. She has also worked as a nurse at Michael Garron Hospital (formerly known as Toronto East General Hospital) for more than 50 years. She said she will be bringing her experience in the education and healthcare fields to Queen’s Park if elected MPP. “I decided to run because I’m anxious to represent the people I work with every day at the hospital, and I represent as a school trustee. I know this community very well,” said Kennedy. She has also served as chair and vice-chair of the TCDSB on a number of occasions over the past 20 years, and she is currently the board’s chair. Though she lives in the North York portion of the board’s Ward 11, Kennedy said she has deep roots in the Beaches-East York riding area. She grew up in the Beach and attended the former Corpus Christi Catholic Elementary School and then Notre

Dame Catholic High School. Working at the hospital at Coxwell and Mortimer avenues has also made her very familiar with the East York area. Kennedy has run as a candidate for the PC Party provincially in 2003 in BeachesEast York, and also in 2007 and 2011 in the Don Valley East riding. She said key issues for her this provincial campaign are education and healthcare, both areas in which she is known to be a strong advocate. “I have a solid background in the education field and as a nurse in healthcare. Along with long-term care, those are both big provincial issues for me,” said Kennedy. “I have a lot of advocacy experience. I was head of the TEGH local of the nurses’ union (provincial) for 10 years. Then I had kids and moved to advocacy in the school council. I have a lot of experience in both healthcare and education, and people trust me.” As a Registered Nurse (RN), she said knows the needs in the long-term care system and how they can be best addressed. “Long-term care is very important. As a nurse I am advocating for more RNs and for people to be able to live in their homes as they age. It is especially important to increase the amount of available home care.” Affordable housing and transit issues, including the impact of planned transit

Angela Kennedy will be the Progressive Conservative Party candidate for the riding of Beaches-East York in the upcoming provincial election. line expansions in the area, are also important issues for her, she said. Kennedy said her familiarity and experiences dealing with residents from all parts of the Beaches-East York riding gives her a strong understanding of the community as a whole; both its differences and similarities. “For me everyone is the same, and I advocate for students and patients no matter what. I grew up in the Beach and feel I’m Beacher. I’ve also worked for more than 50 years as a nurse with the hospital so I also feel I’m an East Yorker. I relate to everyone really well in the riding,” she said. Having run six school

board campaigns, and now entering her fourth provincial election campaign, Kennedy said enjoys getting out on the streets meeting with voters. “I love campaigning and meeting people and walking the neighbourhoods. I’ve walked on the streets of the riding and I know the neighbourhoods and the people,” she said. The provincial election takes place on Thursday, June 2. Also running for the seat in Beaches-East York are the NDP’s Kate Dupuis, Liberal Mary-Margaret McMahon, the Green Party’s Abhijeet Manay, and Joe Ring with the None of the Above Party.

somewhat similar to what is being proposed a couple of blocks to the east at 1035 Kingston Rd., where Collected Joy is located. The proposal for 955 Kingston Rd. was made by property owner Allen Chin, and is within the city’s guidelines for the road. Since minor variances were being sought for platforms on the third and fourth storeys and a change in setback from 5.5 metres from the lot line to 0.9 metres on the west lot line, the application was heard by the CoA instead of City Council. In an earlier interview with Beach Metro Community News, Chin stressed that he and his wife Kinga are not developers, but residents of the building who are looking to expand the space for their family to live in and run their business. He said his proposal is intended to make the neighbourhood a better place

while also adding more space for people to live. “My plan has consideration for the neighbours. I did not maximize the envelope (building space available)… I’m looking for gentle densification,” he said. “This does not impact them and I took great care with that.” Chin, who was born and raised in the East End, said he’s been disappointed by the tone of some people’s objections and how they are questioning his motives, his right to make such a proposal or that he is trying to hurt other businesses on the block. Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford acknowledged to Beach Metro Community News that this proposal has raised strong feelings in the community. “The concern from the community largely centred around The Great Escape Book Store and the desire to be able to be able to maintain the special programming that also takes place at the

back. The community does not want to lose the charm of this business,” said Bradford. He understands this has been an emotional process and many people are resistant to a proposed change which will look so different compared to the other buildings there. “It’s not an easy thing for anybody. Any development or construction presents all kinds of challenges and concerns for the neighbours.” Bradford said he took part in a two-hour phone call with Chin and Nosko prior to the CoA hearing to try and work out the major concerns and to “minimize the impact to the adjacent neighbours.” He said they discussed construction and building impact, the building’s stability and stormwater runoff, and how to support the businesses and retain business continuity through the process. “The applicant has agreed to some adjustments from

the original plan to the neighbours and also through the building process,” said Bradford. Concerns have been addressed “in a thoughtful and meaningful way,” he said. Bradford said Kingston Road is an area where intensification is permitted by the city and the area is going to continue to see change, perhaps in ways that all residents may not like. “You will continue to see an evolution along Kingston Road to include more midrise buildings as it’s a main street in Toronto and has access to transit lines,” he said. As that process continues, Bradford said it will be important for residents to deal with these changes in a way that puts “empathy and understanding” at the forefront. “We have to work together. We can disagree but we have to be civil and continue to be a welcoming and inclusive part of the city,” said Bradford.

In My Opinion

Pay attention to the issues and the candidates in this election Alan Shackleton Beach Metro News Editor

W

ith the Ontario election officially starting this week, it’s time for local voters to think seriously about the candidates in their ridings and how they see the future of our province. Despite what many politicians and their campaign strategists may desperately want you to believe, now is indeed the time to talk about the issues. We have just over four weeks until election day on Thursday, June 2. And with so many advance polls in May, a lot of voters will be casting their ballots even before then. For those who have already made

up their minds as to what candidate or party they will be supporting, please make sure you translate that decision into actually turning out to vote. For the undecided, or not quite completely decided, please take a good look at all the candidates and parties. Listen to what they have to say, and they way they say it, and make sure they are reflecting your political priorities and have a clear position on those issues. Though politics has generally always been “toxic” and partisanship often takes priority over good governance for all residents, the last few years (especially those of the COVID-19 pandemic) have taken it to the extreme. There are far too many politicians who build themselves up on fear and divisiveness. The issue of a candidate’s character and what kind of politician they

intend to be if elected is extremely important in this election. Voters need to pay a lot of attention to this. If we reward bad behaviour and “toxic” politics and candidates, then you can guarantee that’s the kind of elections and governments we will get. If we reject that behaviour and show it cannot win, we can hopefully be rid of it. Or at least lessen its impact. On the issues, I think healthcare, education and affordable housing are three key ones both locally and across the province. The pandemic showed the best and the worst of our healthcare system. The best was the heroic work from those on the frontlines of the battle against COVID-19. The worst was the utter failure of numerous long-term care facilities, especially those run by the private sector, which resulted in far too

many deaths under often shameful conditions. What we need to be hearing from candidates is a commitment to avoid such a tragedy again. This will involve massive funding increases, pay raises for those working in long-term care and a willingness to impose real consequences for those who fail to protect our seniors living in care. While the province alone cannot solve the affordable housing (and housing affordability) crisis taking place in Toronto, it can certainly play a key role in doing so. This is an issue that is already being exploited by those pushing the politics of divisiveness. Look for candidates offering a variety of smart solutions that work for specific communities rather than trying to shove a one-size-fits-all plan down everyone’s throats. Education is also a critically im-

portant issue. Pay close attention to what the candidates and their parties are saying. This election could well decide the future of public education in Ontario. Make sure it is the future you want for our schools and the children we are educating in them. For a specific local issue, Metrolinx and how East Toronto has been treated by the provincial transit agency needs a lot of attention from those we vote in as our MPPs. The work on the Lake Shore East Rail Corridor to expand it from three to four tracks, especially through the Small’s Creek Ravine area, has left many residents angered and frustrated by Metrolinx. Those living along the route of the Ontario Line through East Toronto have the same feelings. Voters must make this a priority for local candidates as the status quo with Metrolinx is simply not acceptable.

I fear the concerns of local residents are not seriously considered when these Kingston Road proposals are made. Here are two examples of this in the immediate area: 1.) The Manderley (one block west of the Kalmar project on the north side). After many meetings an acceptable agreement was

worked out to the apparent satisfaction of the neighbours, the City of Toronto, and the developer. The result was it was sold to another company who made application for the original plan and it was approved without any consultation from the community. Why was this rubber stamped? 2.) Lenmore Court (one block east of Kalmar on the south side). In this case, the city apparently failed to respond to the application within the allotted 120-day time period and failed to obtain an extension. This automatically allowed the developer to apply directly to the Ontario Land Tribunal, which has I believe a record granting de-

velopers’ proposals and fast-tracking their plans. The proposal for 1552-1572 Kingston Rd. is yet another example of an oversized development that ignores the existing zoning and guidelines developed in consultation with the community for this section of Kingston Road. We expect city planners to complete the necessary assessment and respond to the development, indicating that the infrastructure in our community cannot possibly support another development of the size proposed. Our concerns about this situation go far beyond “NIMBYism.” Density on Danforth Avenue has not changed in 50 years but density

on Kingston Road has quadrupled inside of 10 years. In addition, I understand that there are applications in process for 26,000 more units in the area. There have been two recent, major collapses of the Scarborough Bluffs almost south of this location. Is the impact of pile driving on Kingston Road for these condos being monitored by the city or by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority? Another collapse in this area will endanger Crescentwood Road, which is part of the Waterfront Trail. I believe that good planning would spread the density through the Scarborough area. Instead, we

are being faced with overwhelmed schools, sewers, water and constant disruption. In addition, these condos in many cases are being built on properties that contain affordable housing. The displaced tenants are being forced to find similar accommodation far from their communities and neighbours. Many have lived in the same units for 20-plus years and are not in a position to afford to buy a multi-million dollar condo. We are very disappointed by the lack of sensible planning and fair play, and the performance of our elected representatives. Barry Moore

This Beach Metro Community News file photo by Jon Muldoon from the March 9, 2004 edition of the paper chronicles the legendary Guy Lafleur’s skate on the Glen Stewart Park rink on Feb. 24 of that year.

Remembering Guy Lafleur’s visit BEACH REALTOR Thomas Neal has shared his memory of meeting the legendary Guy Lafleur at Glen Stewart Park.. Lafleur, a five-time Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Canadiens and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, died on April 22 at the age of 70. Here are some of Neal’s remembrances of the February day in 2004 that Guy Lafleur came to the Beach for a skate:

“Mr. Lafleur was here filming a TV commercial for battery recycling. “The rink I build in Glen Stewart Park was scouted for the shoot, but warmer weather started to melt the rink a few days before. As luck would have it, the night before the shoot the temps dropped and we had an early morning snowfall. I managed to get the rink into suitable shape for the filming. “Guy was gracious and shared some stories. A few

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto

Dolores Claman the composer of iconic theme music of Hockey Night in Canada Bernie Fletcher

I

t’s Hockey Night in Canada. The NHL playoffs are here and long-suffering fans hope to see the Toronto Maple Leafs end their 55year Stanley Cup drought. Go Leafs Go! The name Dolores Claman may not ring a bell, but everyone knows her iconic music, The Hockey Theme, her gift to Canada’s sport. On April 10 the Canadian Screen Awards gave a heartfelt tribute to the composer who passed away last July at the age of 94. Sidney Crosby recalled: “That song...I have so many memories. Every Saturday night growing up was centred around watching Hockey Night in Canada so I’ve heard that song a lot.” Dolores Claman was born in Vancouver in 1927 and studied classical piano at the Juilliard School in New York. She decided to become a composer in London, England where she met and married writer/lyricist Richard Morris in 1957. The couple moved to Toronto and became one of

Canada’s busiest commercial jingle writing teams, as well as writing for the theatre, television and films. Their first home was a white, frame house on Springbank Avenue right above the Scarborough Bluffs. They moved to Glen Manor Drive, then to a beautiful, new home on Fallingbrook Drive overlooking Lake Ontario. In Canada’s Centennial Year, 1967, Claman and Morris were commissioned to write music for the Ontario Pavilion at Expo ’67 in Montreal. Who can forget the refrain, “A place to stand, a place to grow, Ontari-ariari-o”? Morris described A Place to Stand as “a love song to Ontario”. Christopher Chapman’s 18-minute film went on to win an Academy Award. In 1968 Hockey Night in Canada wanted a new opening theme. Claman composed music at her grand piano by a window surrounded outside by her garden, trees and the blue expanse of the lake which gave her inspiration. One afternoon an idea came to mind. She told the

Globe and Mail in 2008 that “the song wasn’t hard to do.” Claman pictured Roman gladiators marching into the arena and doing battle on the ice, clashing on skates, then the trip home. The composer had never seen a live pro hockey game, but the music “just arrived in my head.” When Scarborough’s Mike Myers filmed his unfunny comedy, The Love Guru (2008), with scenes at Bluffer’s Park, he insisted on using The Hockey Theme. “We, as Canadians, can still hear ‘dunt-da-Dunt-dadunt’, which is, you know, just as Canadian as winter. It’s almost our second anthem,” he said. Hockey Night in Canada is part of our heritage, born in 1952, just weeks after television broadcasting began in this country. We are fortunate to live near the lake, woods and nature which has inspired so many creative talents who have called the Beach “home”, including Norman Jewison, Glenn Gould, Doris McCarthy, William Kurelek and, yes, Dolores Claman. The Juno Awards celebrate the best in Canadian music on May 15 (CBC, 8 p.m.).

Open Doors: Spiritual Matters

Story idea? News tip? Let us know!

Be grateful for the lives we are able to enjoy Rev. Angela J. Cluney Fallingbrook Presbyterian Church

THE EASTER weekend was extra special this year. I believe it could be defined as such as it was our most recent attempt at normal life. It was finally the opportunity for family, friends and neighbours to join together for in-person gatherings, worship services, and even the annual Beaches Easter Parade without the extreme worries we all have been carrying. The return of these activities reminded me of what we have missed over the hiatus of normal life that COVID-19 brought us for two years. The smiles, cheers

and greetings I saw people giving each other at the activities on the Easter weekend showed how much was missed by so many recently. The ability to gather together with those we care about, support each other and be within our communities were indeed wonders of life that we must never take for granted again. The ability to be together (yes, even in masks), in relationship and with our individual communities is a blessed gift. It is also something that not everyone can enjoy freely when we look to those around our world who are suffering! Our ability to come together in fun and faithful ways, while also supporting one another, our community

and our places of worship is a blessing we should never take for granted. This is important and should not be ignored as the world faces the terror of the war in Ukraine, the rise in the refugee crisis and the continued impact of COVID-19. We must aim to live in ways which show our gratefulness for the life that we can each enjoy. We are given daily this opportunity to show this gratefulness, not just on special occasions like Easter. We can daily share our faith without worry, we can celebrate holidays with those we care about and we can simply be together at fun events, such as the Easter parade. Through each of these activities, we are

called to live our lives in a way that shows our gratefulness through gracious and kind ways. Spiritual teacher and author Eckhardt Tolle wrote: “Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” So as we attempt to return to normal life, as we come together to enjoy the fun and important moments we are blessed to live, may we also act in ways that show our eternal gratefulness. May our abundance in life allow us to reach out to support each other, and to create opportunities which build up this foundation we live in amazing and transforming ways that will bless each of us!

That’s Amore fundraiser for southwest Scarborough’s Variety Village now on THE 23RD annual Pizza Nova That’s Amore Pizza for Kids fundraiser in support of southwest Scarborough’s Variety Village is taking place for the entire month of May. As was the case in 2021, this year’s campaign will contribute 50 cents from every dip sold during May to Variety – the Children’s charity of Ontario. For this month, supporting Variety will be as simple as adding a dip with your pizza order from Pizza Nova. Orders can be made by phone, online, through the app or in store. Since it began, the That’s Amore campaign has raised more than $2 million for Variety. In 2021, the Dip and Give campaign raised a single year record-breaking amount of $201,727. Variety Ontario enriches the lives of thousands of children living with physical and mental disabilities by providing an accessible facility at Variety Village, specialized programs, dedicated staff, and a community in which everyone is equal and welcome. Variety Village has been located in southwest Scarborough since 1948. To celebrate the launch of That’s Amore, a pizza party for Variety Ambassadors was held on the morning of May 2 at Variety Village on Danforth Avenue. Attending were Domenic Primucci, president of Pizza Nova; Karen Stintz, CEO of Variety Ontario; and Variety Ontario Brand Ambassadors. For information on how you can add a dip to your order and support Variety Village this May, please go to https://varietyontario.ca/thatsamore Community Sale set for Main Street A COMMUNITY Sale will be taking place on Main Street, north of Lumsden Avenue, later this month. The Main Street Sale is slated for Saturday, May 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participating residents on Main Street, from north of Lumsden Avenue to where the road curves to the west, will be taking part in the event.

We absolutely wanted it to be used to help people.” Funding for the new building came from the City of Toronto’s Open Door Program, the federal/provincial Social Infrastructure Fund (SIF) for Seniors program and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) National Housing Co-investment Fund (NHCF).

Fletcher pointed out that work on transforming the former church site into affordable housing for seniors and a child and family resource centre began at about the same time as the COVID-19 pandemic just over two years ago. “The whole building was built during the pandemic, and that was not an easy thing to do,” she said in thanking all those who made the facility a reality. Fletcher said it was the desire of the congregation of the former Riverdale United Church and the United Church of Canada who played a huge role in making sure the site would be used to benefit the community.
