“It’s not on a main street, it’s not a giant facility, it’s shared use, so there is a community that’s been instilled here,” said Frank.
Joann was one of the original members of the Beaches Recre ation Centre Advisory Council. Her kids, Sarah and Aaron, grew up as “rec rats” in programs such as arts and crafts, ball hockey, and swimming lessons. Sarah even worked at the centre as a teenager.
Now, Cameron and Emery are having similar childhood experi ences by staying active and hav ing fun at the centre. Between gymnastics, cooking classes and the Spring Sprint, which started as a small fundraiser and now has become a springtime staple in the community with hundreds of peo ple running every year.

Between playing games of hockey showdown on Saturday mornings, trying to win the game and a prize from the original CRP, Alf Grigg, the two have been involved with the centre since day one.
It is a place where everyone is welcome, giving people an es cape from the realities of life. Two people who know this place better than anyone are Frank Domagala and Roland Roushias who are the Community Recreation Program mers (CRP) at the centre.

Once a year we three, and up to half a dozen other friends of Lenore, took a holiday together. Each year a differ ent woman supplied a cottage. Some times we stayed at Lenore’s trailer by the Trent River or slept in tents beside it. Some stayed up most of the night talking by a fire. I tried to teach them canasta: whenever anyone tried to con centrate on her hand, Lenore began chomping loudly on cinnamon sticks to distract them. After five days we were ready to return home. Later someone anonymously sent me a copy of Hoyle’s Rules for Christmas
Before she retired, she worked at the TDSB with adult immigrants, helping them with English and teaching them facets of Canadian life. Everywhere she worked, she made friends who became part of her circle.

CRUISING DOWN the highway. On the roof of the VW camper was a kitchen table with its wooden legs in the air. We had no rope to tie it down, so we used old pantyhose. The final pair, which we stretched from toe to toe until it did the splits, was purple. As we stopped at a traffic light, a truck pulled into the next lane. The driver honked, opened his window, and shouted, ”I want to meet the woman that wore those tights.”
The legacy of these women is that the groups they helped went on to improve the lives of many in the neighbourhood.

In her eighties her health failed, and she no longer knew us. She spent her final years in a nursing home.
That was Lenore Diaz, my friend for over 40 years. She died in August.
The Y became a hotbed of estrogen. As well as the youth drop in, there was a women’s drop in. This was the era of The Women’s Movement, and Lenore and Betty were keen adherents. In one of the rooms was a library of feminist books for all to borrow. A YWCA fa
People were drawn to Lenore. Her kitchen and porch on Scarborough Road were a magnet for women. They came by for a coffee and chat, a ride or a request for help. One time her kind ness backfired. She had been in hospi tal and brought home a patient who had nowhere to stay in Toronto. The woman turned out to be argumentative and very demanding, and there was great relief when she left town.
They allowed neighbourhood groups to hold their meetings and plan their strategies in the building. These in cluded ForWard 9 (which spearheaded the fight against the Scarborough Ex pressway, etc.), The Friends of the Les lie Street Spit, and the Woodbine Com munity Association that secured an old police station to become Community Centre 55.

Born in 1935, she grew up in the Queen and Sherbourne area, and moved to Scarborough Road in the late 1960s with her husband and four young chil dren. Here she befriended a neighbour, Betty Stephen. With 11 children be tween them, the two mothers lamented the lack of recreation facilities in the area.(This was 1970. There were no Beach es, Adam Beck or Balmy Beach recre ation centres; and no Community Cen tre 55. Ted Reeve Arena had opened in 1954, but not every child or teen wanted to play hockey or could afford to.)
One Saturday evening almost 30 years ago two police officers came to my door to take me to East Gen eral Hospital, where I learned that my husband, who had gone for a walk on Queen Street, had suddenly died. I was asked to call a friend. I gave Lenore’s phone number, as I knew she would come right away. After the formalities, she drove me home, made a pot of tea and said, ”We are going to make a list of all the things we have to do in the next few days.” Next morning she was back with a group of mutual friends ready to clean my house (a renovation was un derway), while she and Joan Latimer went to a funeral parlour with me. On the day of the funeral in her haste to get a good parking spot, she hit my in-laws’ van in the cemetery.
The East City YMCA, opened in the early 1950s, was now closed. The two women persuaded the Y to allow them to re-open the building as a youth dropin centre, and keep the Y presence alive at 907 Kingston Rd. The Y would pay for the utilities, and the women would donate their services and recruit other adults to help.
Life was not always kind to Lenore. In a short time she lost her mother, hus band and older son. She came to dislike being home alone in the evening. She could often be found at the Fox Theatre with Kleenex stuffed in her ears as she felt the sound was too loud.
She was a great friend to the edi tor, Joan Latimer and to me. We spent three or four weekends a year at Joan’s schoolhouse near Arthur putting into practice the skills we had learned at our handy person night school course. What the pair really enjoyed was scour ing the countryside (and the city) look ing for garage sales. No matter who was driving, once the van stopped, they jumped out and ran to see who could find the best buys first, and the winner gloated and teased the other.
New organizations were given free office space. They were Ward 9 Commu nity News (the original name of this pa per), and Senior Link (now Neighbour hood Link). The Ward 9 Co-operative Playschool met weekday mornings in the Y gym, and a few years later the Beaches Alternative School began in the large back room.
By the early 1980s, the Y had re claimed the building, and for a short time Lenore was hired as its supervi sor. She then worked at a number of positions at the Toronto District School Board. She was more familiar with us ing tools than many women at the time, and became a caretaker at an east-end school. Then she worked with a teacher rounding up students with a poor atten dance record and devising programs to keep them in school. On one occasion they visited an obstacle course and ev eryone had to finish or the whole team failed, and even she felt challenged by having to crawl though a long tunnel.
She had influenced many lives for the better, including mine. God speed and Rest In Peace, Lenore.

Prior to her recovery, Teabo spent time in a with drawal program that was less than ideal. The service prides itself on pre serving dignity which is vital in a person’s path towards recovery.“When you come to a place like this for the first time, you are at your lowest point,” said Teabo. “And I know the place I went to looked like I was at my lowest point. Once guests are inside, they will have confidential and private intakes where their needs are determined by staff. The facility has nurses available at all hours as well as an addictions counsellor.Forsafety reasons–and given the circumstances of their stay–guests are super vised for the first 72 hours
before they are transferred to the house program where they will continue their jour ney towards recovery.
The hospital opened a new Women’s Withdrawal Man agement Services (WWMS) facility on Aug. 25. The facili ty for women is located at 989 Danforth Ave. (at Donlands Avenue), directly beside the Men’s Withdrawal Manage ment Services that has oper ated there for more than 10 years.The facility, which is open 24 hours a day, supports in dividuals 16 and older who identify as women, non-bina ry, two-spirit and trans who are in crisis due to opioids, alcohol or other substances. It is equipped with 16 beds. Their services include gathering spaces for group programming, crisis and house program beds, coun selling, assessments and referrals for additional treat ment when necessary. The facility will also provide con nections to resources such as harm reduction services, housing and case manage ment.Upon arrival, a client is greeted by a welcoming mu ral courtesy of Julia Zhou, aka FPMONKEY, a BIPOC artist based in Toronto. In 2021, there were 511 deaths as a result of opi oid overdoses in Toronto. According to the city, this represents a “74 per cent in crease from 2019 and a 273 per cent increase from 2015”.
Teabo believes that the new WWMS means “more women have a place where they can feel safe and sup ported in their journey” which, from her experience, “makes all the difference when it comes to taking that first step to recovery.”

The vast majority of police officers are pro fessionals who are dedicated to their duty to serve, protect and enforce the law. Those who do not live up to their oath should be re moved from the force.
Finally, the writer wrote about “encour aging” the “community to be imaginative in their response to safety.” I’m sure many resi dents would be interested in hearing “imagi native” ideas on how to manage huge crowds of youth converging on Woodbine Beach with only a few police officers.

Local teens Katie, Addi, Camden, Julia, Sofia, and Mackenzie held a bake sale on the Boardwalk recently to raise funds for the Hospital for Sick Children. They set up just east of Kew Gardens and the event was a huge success, raising $1,117 for the hospital. The girls are hoping to make the sale an annual event.

On Aug. 20, under the vision and leadership of KRU member Tim Dawson, many in the congregation and community came out to beautify the boards sur rounding the building while the project is ongoing. It was a glorious day, and brought much joy to all who were walking by. Plus, it was a very successful fundraiser as KRU turns from fundrais ing internally to fundraising externally to members of the community. And to me, the end result – the beauti ful paintings all around the building – says “There’s something happening here.” The spirit is moving indeed.

Number two … almost everything I have done in ministry over the past three decades has been program related, and often done outside a church building.Thisincludes university chaplaincy, church camps, retreat centres, and small groups in peoples’ homes. Even when I was the lead minister in a congregation in Halifax for four years before I came to Toronto, it was with a congregation that left its building in 2009 and was worshipping in a music conservatory.

It’s been more than seven years since I took the panoramic photo at the top of the page. I was standing in front of Fire Station 227 on Queen Street East in the Beach. The Shell gas station, which had been on the northeast corner of Queen Street East and Woodbine Avenue, had recently been razed and a new condo was to be constructed.
Show times are 6 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 30; and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 1 and 2.
