TDSB trustee candidates talk platform By Nina Rafeek

ON OCTOBER 22, voters of Beaches—East York will be marking an “X” beside the name of who they hope to be their new school board trustees. With election day around the corner, trustee

candidates will be making the final push to convince voters why they should be chosen to represent the needs of parents and children in Ward 16 of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). Continued on Page 2

ALEXANDER PEÑA surprised everyone when he stormed in demanding a chair at the Toronto–Danforth Council Candidates’ (New Ward 14) Debate on October 3 at the Centennial College Story Arts Centre during Chris Marinakis’ opening statement. Security quickly escorted him out. He returned in time for the closing statements and was given a chair but decided to stand while expressing his concerns in a fiery two-minute speech. “Sorry I couldn’t be here because I wasn’t invited,” candi-

date Peña said. “My main focus is to regulate rental apartments. It is not possible for anything built before 1980 to cost more than $950!” “I’d also like people to get more involved in their communities. Walking around, you see that people don’t even talk to their neighbours so much. I think there’s less of a chance of crime when we have a strong community,” Peña told Beach Metro News after the debate. Community Activities Coordinator and Professor of Journalism at Centennial College, Mary Vallis, organized the event.

She said she tried reaching Peña but couldn’t find any of his contact information. With the attendance of nine of the Ward 14 candidates, the debate was a significant milestone in the development of the Toronto–Danforth community. Informative, controversial and heated at times, the event included a debate between city council candidates and general inquiries, comments and questions from the public. “I want to reflect on what this is really about. This is about local democracy. We’re down to 25 wards. For the City of Toronto,

this is really our time to find out what the candidates want, what they have to offer and it is your turn to hear that,” said Nate Horowitz, Dean of the Story Arts Centre. People sent in questions prior to the debate. Crime, gun violence, transportation, cycling, community involvement and affordable housing were the main topics covered.

TOP PRIORITIES: “I have met countless families and teachers who are negatively impacted by racialization, inequity, large class sizes, inconsistent resources, and lack of timely assessments of student need.” Aarts plans to work with the board to ensure that class sizes reflect provincial maximums. She will also facilitate greater access to equity and special education training for school staff. Her other top priority is to create accessible, walkable community hubs within local schools.

Brandy Huff wants to be the voice she needed when she was a student. Armed with professional work experience with the municipal and provincial government, and a master’s degree in business administration, Huff is prepared to navigate bureaucracy in the board. She is also committed to listening to the concerns of parents and children and representing the community’s voice to influence positive change. TOP PRIORITIES: Huff’s platform is geared towards allocating more resources to students through afterschool child care programs, reduction of classroom sizes and advocacy for a sex-ed curriculum that includes consent, cyber safety and LGBTQ inclusive material. Huff said she will advocate for safer and stronger schools by fighting for more infrastructure funding to

repair the ward’s “crumbling schools.” She will also prioritize Ward 16 in the city’s Vision Zero initiative to improve school zone safety. About the new Premier Doug Ford provincial government, Huff said, “Like him or hate him, we are stuck with him for four years; to address the community’s concerns, the TDSB will need to work with, advocate and fight to see change.” Kuga Kasilingam As a member and treasurer of the Cluster Parent Academy Committees (CPAC), Kula Kasilingam has gained a deep understanding of school board’s administration system. He aims to fill the need for trustees who can balance the budget and allocate funds to repair the structural damage to public schools in the ward. Continued on next page

“I feel I could use my expertise in financial management and accounting as well as administrative law to tackle these issues and be a good negotiator and bargainer at the board level on behalf of our ward and to be a good representative for our community,” he said. TOP PRIORITIES: Kasilingam said that teacher absenteeism and last minute substitutions of supply teachers need to be addressed. He plans to hire more qualified teachers and implement a school transfer policy within the board. He will also work to mitigate overcrowded classrooms, especially at the kindergarten level. His platform, overall, revolves around student achievement, well-being and equity. “I am committed to creating more inclusive and equitable school system,” he said. Phil Pothen

chair, Pothen said that he possesses the skillset needed to meet the challenges of the new political environment in the board. “For the next few years, the official lines of communication and persuasion (e.g. statutory consultative bodies and processes) aren’t going to be effective. Every inch of progress we make (or hold) will have to be ripped from the resisting hands of the provincial government through a combination of litigation, political pressure — and unflinching, sometimes unconventional uses of the board’s own authority,” he wrote. TOP PRIORITIES: Pothen asserted that he will resist the inevitable push for cutbacks and policy intervention from the “farright provincial government” because it will throw the ward’s most vulnerable students, families and schools “under the bus.” For example, he will fight against the watering down of programs such as the Model Schools for Inner Cities program and the Intensive Support Programs (ISPs), which are designed to level the playing field for kids already at a systemic disadvantage. He also said that he will work for stronger partnerships between the TDSB and Toronto City Council.

Phil Pothen is running for trustee because he has two small children who will be in Beaches—East York TDSB schools for at least a dozen more years. As a lawyer, community organizer, and former policy

than ever looking for affordable housing. We have the most expensive housing and part of that is because of federal policy, but there are things that we can fix like mortgage rates, Bank of Canada rates and more,” said candidate Ryan Lindsay. Public transit is another major concern for the Toronto–Danforth community. The candidates have all been working to implement safer and more efficient transportation initiatives for all of Toronto. “There was a motion that I moved as part of the 2018 budget that took money from the parking authority dividend and put it towards dealing with overcrowding on buses. That is why, on Sept. 1, we added a lot of extra buses to routes like the Don Mills 25, the Leaside 56, the Rocket, the 185 and more,” said incumbent Mary Fragedakis. There are two incumbents running in Ward 14, Fragedakis and Paula Fletcher. Some of the other candidates criticized them by saying they have not done much during their time in council. There was no rebuttal. Candidate Lanrick Bennett Jr. received a great reaction from the audience when he mentioned term limits. “I want to be a term limit candidate—a person that gets in, does some good stuff and then gets out of the way. I want to make sure we are bringing more of the community in to be part of what’s going on,” said Bennett in his closing statement. The debate was designed to introduce people to the candidates’ platforms and address questions and concerns with election day fast approaching. Voting for the right Ward 14 candidate could mean the difference in everything from potholes to overcrowded buses and everyone knows that Toronto has plenty of both.

Beach Studio Tour blends a selection of fresh perspectives and rich tradition SOMETHING OLD and something new — that’s what you’ll find when you explore the fall Beach Studio Tour which takes place between October 1921. Blending cherished traditions with fresh perspectives, the fall 2018 Beach Studio Tour is celebrating almost 25 years of sharing its artistic vision with the public. Launched in 1994 by two perceptive entrepreneurs, the city’s longestrunning studio tour is renowned for its cordial hospitality, diverse media, and exceptional artwork. It proudly upholds its legacy while keeping pace with progressive trends in art. Each member in the artist-run collective creates original new pieces every season, and they welcome the chance to discuss their latest inspirations, upcoming ventures, and evolving techniques, deepening their guests’ appreciation of the craftsmanship behind their art. This year’s line up includes weaver Lucille Crighton, photographer John Dowding, and painters Dianne Shelton and Elizabeth Berry, all of whom are respected tour veterans who continue to delight their visitors with innovative work. This year’s newcomers include mixed-media artist Susan Aaron, painter and photographer Sandi Stahlbrand, and textile artist Sandra Pim. The long-standing custom of inviting the community into the artists’ personal spaces is now enhanced with the addition of the Gardener’s Cottage ven-

ue in Kew Gardens. Designed in the Queen Anne Revival style, this distinctive stone house was built in 1902 as a honeymoon cottage, later becoming the official residence of the park caretaker. It will serve as a unique studio site for three Beach Studio Tour artists. Don’t miss the opportunity to stroll, cycle, or drive to meet the 23 artists at fifteen different locations, marked by yellow balloons and signs. The Beach

neighbourhood has the warm intimacy of a lakeside village. Pick up the perfect holiday gift for family and friends or something special just for you. Councillors need to focus on protection and care of seniors AS A resident of the Beach Lions Centennial Apartments (now a Toronto Community Housing seniors building), I hope that municipal candidates will be elected who will care about and protect seniors: 1) The wait for seniors to get into a subsidized apartment is now 10 years or more. Those paying market rent on a fixed income develop malnutrition and substantial debt. 2) There is also a lack of nursing home spaces for those needing more care. We have had seven kitchen fires here because of persons who do not know they are cooking. 3) There is a long waiting list for group homes for psychiatric patients who need

supervision to take their medication. These persons are being put in with other seniors who should not have to endure all-night noise, indecent exposures, fear for safety, harassment etc. 4) The City Auditor needs to be brought in to investigate unnecessary repairs and possible kickbacks. For example, in 2016 they were going to replace all of our nice, new kitchen and bathroom cabinets which were just installed in 2009. 5) The high death rate needs to be investigated. In the eight and a half years that I have lived here, 17 of my neighbours have died out of 43 apartments. There have also been fatal fires in the seniors buildings, such as the one at 145 Strathmore Boulevard in East York. 6) The budget needs to be re-organized because when the housing and service needs of seniors are not provided, this causes a terrible strain on the emergency resources such as police, fire and ambulance and emergency room staff - all of whom do a wonderful job, but should not have to do other people’s jobs as well. L. Houston

Candidates, tell us your mayoral choice THANK YOU Beach Metro News and the Balmy Beach Residents Association for organizing [the September 24] Ward 19 candidates meeting. [The October 2] issue of BMN had a good account of the event and a fair summary of each candidate’s platform. Each candidate espoused transparency and accountability in their opening remarks. During the last council term, endless hours and dollars were wasted on debating and redebating many issues. For example, the Scarborough subway was approved early in the term, but it was debated another six times and, of course, approved each time. This is the sort of dysfunctional log jam that people hate because it wastes money and time on an issue that’s already been decided. All indications show that John Tory will be re-elected handily. If our next councillor is on his team, philosophically it will go a long way to improving the efficiency of the new smaller council. I’m not suggesting each councillor should

act sheepish and support everything Tory proposes, but if we want progress the endless partisan disruptions have to stop. The first question asked last week was whom each candidate supported for mayor. Only three candidates committed to an answer. Two candidates (B. MacDonald and J. Makuch) said they supported Tory and one (D. Del Grande) said he supported Keesmat. To the other nine candidates at the debate I say shame on you. You espouse transparency but refuse to be transparent about your support. Your hypocrisy is astounding and disappointing. It’s especially disappointing that the three perceived front-runners, Brad Bradford, Diane Dyson and Matthew Kellway, each refused to answer. Granted, if one of you is fortunate to be elected you’ll have to work with whoever is mayor, but if you solicit our trust, and promise transparency, it should not prevent you from declaring upfront whose mayoral policies you support. An informed electorate will produce the fairest election results. Charles Braive Ward 19

FOR MOST young doctors, after having gone through medical school and working for a couple of years in residency, the idea of opening a clinic would be the last thing on their mind. But for Amjed KadhimSaleh, known as A.J. to his friends and family, it seemed like a natural next step. Along with his wife and business partner Mary Aglipay, the 30-year-old doctor set his sights on opening a family practice in Kingston Road Village and that vision is now a reality with the opening of Vivo Family Medicine. Born in Baghdad, this doctor knew from an early age that helping people would be his calling in life. Inspired by the doctors he saw working to save lives during the wars in Iraq, A.J. decided that going into the field of medicine and, more specifically, working as a general practitioner (GP) in a neighbourhood practice would give him the chance to make a difference in people’s lives and provide comprehensive care at every stage in life, from birth to old age. Starting any business is a complicated and often stressful process, but for a medical clinic there are so many other factors to take into consideration, even down to ensuring the doors on the examination rooms are solid enough to provide complete privacy for patients. Fortunately, A.J. and Mary were able to work with a designer who specialised in these types of spaces and together they came up with a space that is welcoming, practical and maximizes an efficient flow for patients. The space, located on the main floor of a condo building at 952 Kingston Road, is bright and open, featuring Scandinavian

Combined with the latest medical software and A.J’s pride and joy, a custom-built doctor’s station, the clinic has the ability to serve a high capacity of patients, including walk-ins, while reducing waiting times and providing a full range of programs including those with a focus on preventative care and mental health. While Mary won’t be working on site at the clinic, as she will be continuing her current job as a researcher in epidemiology, both her and her husband were very specific when it came to choosing a location. While they had looked at a number of neighbourhoods in the city, there was

something about the Upper Beach location that felt just right. “We immediately felt comfortable here,” said Mary. “And realized this was exactly the kind of neighbourhood we wanted to be a part of with its large population of young families who we can grow with and serve over the long term.” And, judging from the buzz in the neighbourhood that started as soon as the signs went up at the former storefront, there seems to be a definite need for a new family clinic in the area. “It’s been a long journey, a huge learning experience and a lot of work,” said A.J. “But to see everything finally coming together is so exciting and we can’t wait to open our doors in September.” Vivo Family Medicine is now open and is currently

accepting patients. For more information go to vivofamilymed.com.

Cori Endrody of Re/Max Hallmark Realty Ltd.

By David Van Dyke In the April 17, 2018 edition of Beach Metro News, I ran a photograph submitted by the Taylor family from Main Street. Their father, Bill, took a picture of a group of Girl Guides parading down Queen Street by Wheeler Avenue. In the background of the photograph is a fashion store, and I asked our readership if anyone remembered Mili Paster Fashions. To my pleasant surprise Rhonda Greenberg Pasternack, the daughter of the owner of Mili Paster, replied and sent me this wonderful photo that was taken sometime in the ’70s. Thank you Rhonda for sharing in our history! Do you have an old photo of the Beach you’d like to share? Please contact me by email at this address gdvandyke61@gmail.com. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

Two local studios for the yoga novice By Surina Nath

THERE ARE several innovative yoga studios around the Beach that welcome those of all skill levels and ages. The Pink Studio is a yoga, dance and fitness studio at Woodbine and Danforth Avenues is one of them. South African natives Natalie Borch and brother Grant Van Rensburg opened their family-owned location in February 2018 and offer a range of classes such as Vinyasastyle beginner yoga, Pilates and ballet. Natalie, who has been in the Beach for 10 years says “a lot of the idea behind the studio centres around empowerment and inclusivity. What’s important to us is to have a place that is body positive. Growing up as a dancer, the [dance] community can be very non-inclusive but we are very welcoming and LGBTQ positive, as my brother is a part of the community,” she said. “The pink may give off a women-only vibe but men are definitely welcome as well,” she said. The studio also has a boutique with apparel that goes up to XXL, and it’s from a Canadian wholesaler. The Pink Studio is for beginners, especially its yoga classes where it may be intimidating to dive in—these are warm, paced classes for people who want to try yoga for the first time and are hesitant. You can visit drop-in classes for $15 or buy a membership to join eight classes for $84 a month. Liz McGregor is another local business owner, having just celebrated her second year of operating Pur Yoga studio on Queen Street East between Hammersmith and Wineva Avenues. The name ‘Pur Yoga’ conveys McGregor traditional approach to yoga, so the classes do not tend to focus on power

or hot yoga. “The nice thing of having a smaller studio is the ability to give focused attention to individuals in a small comforting space,” said Liz. “The ability to prevent injury is much greater with smaller classes as we can focus attention on form.” Pur offers Vinyasa, Iyengar, Yoganidra, a TRX Program, Thai Yoga massage and much more. “We have a created a sort of safe-haven space here, as yoga is about the mind and the spirit, you have to feel comfortable with the space that you are in,” she said. “For me it is all about movement, health and wellness — we need to keep moving to stay healthy.” McGregor said that the “BeginnerSeries is where we have made quite a name for ourselves — everyone starts

at the same level with a range of age groups.” They are sold out for both sessions this fall. The boy’s cross-training class, which involves both mindfulness and yoga, is also sold out. She is happy the class is successful; her son Graeme also participates with his friends from hockey. Pur’s teachers are hugely experienced, well loved, and respected in the community — as Liz says, “you can’t beat the Beaches.” Both studios have attentive beginner programs for those in the community who are interested in building their confidence towards a balanced yoga education. This fall is the perfect season to change up your routine and try something new to nourish your soul.

WE ARE less than a week away from municipal election day in Toronto, happening October 22. The Beach Metro News staff, including our student reporters from the Centennial College Journalism program, have been busy covering news and events in several of our newspaper’s catchment areas.

The following series is our second crop of stories from our students based on their interviews with city councillor candidates for new Ward 19, Beaches–East York. A huge believer in affordable housing and excellent childcare, Diane Dyson is currently running for Toronto City Councilor for Beaches–East York in the upcoming municipal election. When the reduced number of wards became official by Premier Doug Ford, Dyson says it made things difficult. She says because the reduction was in the middle of an election, it mostly caused confusion for the voters. “It was head-spinning,” Dyson said. “It got to the point where I had to check

the news hourly for an update. It was so confusing. I feel like it left voters to question who or what their options are. It was a loss for Torontonians. It means less diversity.” Having a successful career that includes advocating for poverty reduction, tenant rights, decent work provisions, and more, Dyson, a single mother raising a family in Toronto, believes her most dominant focus is the high cost of living in Toronto. David Del Grande became interested in city issues at an early age. His father is a former city councillor, so his family is no stranger to politics. Del Grande ran as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for the Southwest Scarborough riding representing the Green Party back in the spring. Even though the party didn’t win, he is hoping to represent the Beaches– East York area at city council. Right

now his interest in politics is burning brighter than ever. Del Grande knows it’s a tough race because of the recent reduction of wards, yet he firmly believes that he has a chance to win. “I do think that I have a chance. But it has become a lot more competitive in the wards especially since the merger,” said Del Grande.

Morley Rosenberg By Doha Hanno With a long history in municipal politics, city councillor candidate for Ward 19, Morley Rosenberg, is continuing his work in community service. “I’ve got about 35 years of public experience. I’ve dealt with a lot of these issues at the local level in Kitchener when I was a mayor and on council for 15 years and on the Ontario Municipal Board for 20 years,” Rosenberg said. “I think I can help council deal with a

lot of the problems that arise because of my experience.” Rosenberg doesn’t agree with Ford’s decision to change the size of city council. He says there are going to be communication problems between the number of people sitting in council and the constituents in the ward.“They’re going to have to probably set up four or five sub-committees in that ward,” he said.

Frank Marra By Kasy Veena

Although Frank Marra’s career aspiration to become a city planner changed, his goals didn’t, as he is now running for the city councillor for Ward 19. Marra dedicated over 30 years of his life to the accounting and finance fields, and now works at an architectural firm. His experience at Climans Green Liang Architects has given him an advantage in understanding the city’s development and infrastructure. “Let’s just say I’ve solidified my reputation as someone who knows something about development because I work with people who are

basically on the ground for development,” said Marra. After realizing there is more to be done for the city, he found his way into politics. Although Marra doesn’t live in Ward 19, he admits that he still treats the issues as if it were his home. If elected, Marra wants to focus on transportation matters concerning bike lanes, intersections, and more. “Through city policy, we’ve forced an artificial divide between the users of the road, mostly cars, pedestrians and cyclists. We’ve moved away from the collaborative use of the roads — it’s either us or them, and that just doesn’t work,” he said. When it comes to connecting with

Veronica Stephen By Dena Shah

Veronica Stephen may be running for city councillor for the first time; however, she is no stranger to the environment of working for the city. For over 10 years, Veronica has worked for the City of Toronto. Her educational background is labour relations and human resources. Her career has made it possible for her to work in three different branches of the City of Toronto. She has worked in court services, employment/social services, and parks, forestry and recreation. Stephen believes that her work experience will help her stand out from

other candidates. “Having worked in three different divisions at the City of Toronto, I am equipped to foresee what the implications of short-sighted decisions made in council will be,” she said. “I’ve witnessed cuts to our much needed programs and services for youth and seniors, pool closures, wasteful spending and areas where we can spend more efficiently.” In terms of the ward’s issues, Stephen sees the rise of crime as the most pressing. She wants to bring back community policing as a way to try to reduce crime, and build a better relationship between the community and the police. “Statistics show that visible min-

orities and vulnerable groups are more likely to have a negative interaction with police than other groups. Continued on Page 23

Josh Makuch By Chelsie Ortiz Luis

Election day for Toronto is arriving soon, and Josh Makuch, city councillor candidate for Beaches–East York, is ready for action. When Premier Doug Ford unexpectedly cut down the number of wards to 25, Makuch says it was an incorrect decision. By making this reduction right in the middle of an election, Makuch believes Toronto had no fair say in the situation. “I think the process by which the premier did that was very wrong,” said Makuch. “It doesn’t account for the fact that Toronto deserves a say in how many wards it has. As of right

now, I don’t see how reducing a number is going to make the government more efficient.” As a former platoon commander in Afghanistan, Makuch believes his experience in the Canadian Armed Forces has given him strong leadership abilities for the upcoming election. Being brought into a tough and difficult terrain such as Afghanistan, he says being a leader was life or death for everyone. “Being a young person who was commissioned as an officer in the military, it is a huge crash course in leadership,” said Makuch. “I was only 24 years old and I was in charge of 40 soldiers. I don’t think there’s any place in the world that teaches you leadership in that

THIS YEAR marks the 10th anniversary of the Fear Factory at the Beaches Recreation Centre. Over the past 10 years, this free Halloween event has hosted over 4,000 people who dared to be scared, and over 1,000 people have chickened out. Close to 6,000 pounds of food has been collected for different food banks, and thanks

to the many volunteers make, this event is a massive success every year. Due to the scary nature of the content organizers strongly advise that attendees are over the age of eight. The event takes place on: Friday, October 26, 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, October 27, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. The event is free, you just need to bring a non-perishable food donation.

FO R COUNCILLOR

Hello residents of Ward 19, No one could have expected doubling the size of our wards in the middle of an election. I want all residents to know that just because I didn’t make it to your door does not mean I don’t care. As councillor I will represent all residents equally, and there’s one promise I can make:

no matter your issue, no matter your opinions, you will ALWAYS hear back from my office.

THE GLEN Rhodes United Church Food Bank at Coxwell and Gerrard Avenues won the ‘Community Cornerstone’ award at the Daily Bread Best-in-Class Awards last month. The award recognizes individuals and organizations who demonstrate an extraordinary com-

all is officially here and it is one of my favourite times of the year. I love the crisp, clear days, sweater and boot weather and decorating with fall colours and props. Since most of the gardens don’t have a lot of colour in them right now, I usually want to add some to front porches or entry ways. Use pumpkins and various other squash and fall mums in planters mixed with ivy. Vintage wood crates or galvanized sap buckets are perfect accessories. Anything rustic and textured will work. These are all great ways to dress up your house outside – but what about inside? Even though Thanksgiving is over, there’s no reason not to set a lovely fall table. There is a really big trend right now in weddings and event decor towards more casual “foraging” florals. This just means picking fresh items that are local and in season and making those part of your arrangements. You can create the same look at home on your own fall table. Using items from your garden, or in the wild, and using those as your base for your centrepieces. Queen Anne’s Lace, ivy, wild vines, branches and hydrangea are perfect to pick right now while they are still looking fresh. Instead of formal centrepieces, lay the ivy and/or vines along the centre of the table and add in a few small vessels with flowers in them. It’s a more informal look, using only a few blossoms, scattered throughout, instead of a larger arrangement. When looking at vessels/vases, go outside the box and use things you may already have around the house or hit a flea market or thrift shop for some cool finds. A vintage gravy boat can beautifully hold flowers, and silver trays and dishes can be the base for your ivy and vines. A collection of vintage

vases look great placed along the table with small buds in them — repetition of shapes, colours or materials is always a great way to keep the look chic. Using vintage fabrics or more natural materials as tablecloths is also great. Vintage white linen never goes out of style. Stock up on this every time you see it at markets and vintage shops. Burlap runners look great for a fall tablescape, and can be repurposed to wrap your

shrubs when the weather turns colder. Just like when the weather gets colder and we put on layers, do the same for your table! Salvaged or rustic wood planks can be sanded and oiled and used over and over on the table. They are great to put hot dishes on while adding character and texture to the look. Be sure to add lots of candles in different sizes — tealights and pillar candles in old jars or set on old dishes add a nice, soft glow. You don’t need to spend a lot or even buy new to create a really warm and beautiful look on your table. Eclectic and unusual items will make it unique and interesting. Happy decorating!

Reel Beach: Movies in East Toronto

The Leafs ‘Face-Off ’ for a new season Bernie Fletcher

H

as there ever been a more anticipated hockey season for long-suffering Leaf fans? Dare we dream? It’s been over half a century since Toronto last held a Stanley Cup parade. Who remembers Bobby Baun scoring with a broken leg? I have fond memories of those long ago Saturday nights, the last strains of the Hockey Night in Canada theme music playing as I tumbled half-asleep into bed. There’s a new hotshot player in town to lead the Leafs back from the wilderness. Auston Matthews? John Tavares? No, it’s Billy Duke, played by Art Hingle, and the year is 1971 and Face-Off is the first Canadian film to have a million dollar budget. The 1960s were a time of protest, flower children and folk music in Yorkville. Neil Young was playing clubs like the Riverboat and Joni Mitchell’s man was “betting on the Maple Leafs.” Why not? The Leafs won four Stanley Cups, but now their glory days were fading. The late, great Johnny Bower

retired in 1970, but George Armstrong and Dave Keon carried the torch. Johnny F. Bassett had an idea for a movie, a Romeoand-Juliet type of love story set in the very different worlds of hockey and music. A rookie from the sticks comes to the big, bad city and falls for a troubled singer (Trudy Young). The whole Leaf team and NHL legends like Bobby Orr would be part of the filming. There was only one problem for the lead actor Art Hindle. As he later recalled, “I think I was the only Canadian kid of my era who didn’t play hockey and who couldn’t skate.” When Hindle was young his father brought him to a rink, but his feet froze so they took up sailing at Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club instead. Hindle was lucky that the Face-Off hockey scenes were filmed last. After two months of practice he could skate well enough that Paul Henderson asked how he “got so good” in that short time. Leaf Jim McKenny was Hindle’s stand-in during action scenes. Hindle has said he got the role because he looked like McKenny. Art Hindle grew up in

the Beach Hill area on Eastwood Road and later on Courcelette Avenue. Hindle was a free-spirited teen who spent a lot of time hitchhiking across North America. He attended Riverdale C.I. and Malvern C.I., but left after Grade 11. He was a father at 19 and became a successful stockbroker, but wasn’t happy. He did some modelling, but really wanted to be an actor like his uncle. Face-Off was only his second film. In 1974 Hindle left for Hollywood where his many credits include Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the TV series Dallas. He was back in Canada for Black Christmas (with scenes at Centre 55), Porky’s and the TV series E.N.G. for which he won a Gemini Award. These days Art Hindle lives on a horse farm in King Township, still busy with his long career as well as advocating for the film industry and arts funding while working with the actors’ union, ACTRA. Face-Off was labelled the Canuck version of Love Story, a hit film and book about a hockey player and a doomed love. Hindle calls the film “a perfect time

We do see a Toronto that only lives in our memories, a city before the CN Tower and condos and a ritzy Yorkville. I hope to be around for another Stanley Cup parade. Royson James recently wrote in the Star: “But only dead or dying Leaf hockey fans saw the league’s best play for the home side.” Does he know something I don’t know? Should I see my doctor? Hey, I’m still standing and I’m not leaving till the Leafs win again. Go Leafs go!

Pet of the Month

Princess the cat needs a home ASAP Marna Gale

My name is Princess. I may not have a brightly coloured coat but there’s nothing more classic than black! And I may be a few hairballs older than a kitten, but I still have my moments of madness and mischief! Most importantly, I’m not too old for love! I can prove it if you let me. I’m a phenomenal kisser and an even better face rubber! So to sum it up, I’m a princess named Princess overflowing with purr-sonality and custom kisses, patiently waiting to fall in love again! Could you be the object of my future affections? I’m well worth the drive to Port Hope!” It’s been two years since I stumbled across Tails Up Pet Food in beautiful Port Hope where I met the pet shop’s fifteenth shelter cat up for adoption. Angel was a kitten who took her position as store security quite seriously. I won’t soon forget how thorough she was inspecting my shopping bag that day. It didn’t matter that she wasn’t really an employee. Store owners, Dennis and Amy, couldn’t deny her the title, at least until Angel’s adoption day. I’m sure she’s still doing a fine job conducting random searches of her people’s personal belongings. You can’t take the rent-a-cop out of the cat! Dennis and Amy have lost count of how many cats they’ve happily re-homed for their local animal shelter since opening their store three years ago, but it’s over 40. Clearly, the program is a huge success. The couple takes one cat at a time which gives each adoption hopeful the opportunity to shine brightly for every customer who walks through the door. Nevertheless, a recent addition to their family has

been appointed Therapy Kitty for the shelter cats and he’s doing wonders as their personal in-store agent. The 12-week-old, black-andwhite kitten, who they aptly named Tails, showed up at their door one day and never left. They can’t help but think he was heaven-sent, despite his devilish ways. Tails possesses remarkable marketing skills if you can overlook the chaos that follows his every move. He’s just annoying enough to get the shy ones out of their hiding places, if only to take a paw-swipe at him in protest. Tails will do whatever it takes to get his latest client out of the shadows and into the spotlight. Admittedly, he’s got his work cut out for him with Princess. Aside from a black cat named Jewel who stayed six weeks before finding a forever home given her untimely arrival close to Halloween, Princess is taking the longest to match. It’s been two months since she arrived from the shelter. Back then, she was badly matted with a terrible case of dander likely originating from a flea infestation. Despite the discovery of a microchip, she was never reunited with an owner. Sadly, the chip led to a vacant rental property so the consensus is she was abandoned. “She’s got everything going against her,” said Dennis. “Most people prefer the colourful cats such as Calicos, Tabbies and Tortoiseshells. She’s also long-haired and people worry about excessive shedding but with good grooming and nutrition, long hair doesn’t have to be a negative. But she’s also an older cat.” As a lover of senior pets, I’ll never understand that being a bad thing. The older, the wiser I say! So Princess sees the pointlessness of chasing her own tail or unraveling a

ball of yarn. What’s wrong with that? Of course, she’s set in her ways. She prefers to ‘tolerate’ Mr. Therapy Kitten rather than befriend him but she’s got plenty of admirable qualities to purr about nonetheless! Given her timid personality, there’s no denying Princess is making good use of her kitty condo in the store window. Truth be told, it’s more of a three-tiered palace complete with a top floor luxury hammock thanks to Dennis and his handiwork. He likes to spoil the adoption candidates. He’s currently working on carpeting a support post in the store for their ultimate climbing pleasure. Back to those admirable qualities Princess possesses…with a little prodding from her annoying, yet highly motivational marketing agent, Princess will indeed venture from her palace when the mood strikes her. First, she’ll take a retaliatory swipe at Tails’ tail as he usually deserves it, and then she’ll stretch, purr and visit with the customers. I was especially fortunate. Not only did she emerge from her fortress, she planted herself right on my lap! I swear cats know when you’re allergic. But I held off on my sneezes so Princess could do what she pleases. This included some unexpected yet adorably gentle little love nibbles on my fingers! That’s when my heart melted. Princess is no standoffish brooding curmudgeon of a cat too old for love. She’s an affectionate black beauty that deserves a lifetime of affection in return. I don’t suspect she’d ever complain if there was a pea under her bed cushions either. From one classic Black Beauty tale to another, I hope this story ends the same — “my troubles are over, and I am finally home”

Princess is a 10-year-old, fully vaccinated, spayed female domestic longhaired cat specializing in love nibbles & face rubs. She’s looking to love and be loved. If you’re looking for love too, please don’t hesitate to visit https://www.facebook. com/TailsUpPetFood/ for details about Princess or call Dennis and Amy at the store at 905885-4000. The adoption fee is $95 which goes directly back to the shelter to help cover costs. — from Anna Sewell’s book, Black Beauty. *Special shout-out to two wonderful sponsors of this adoption program: Blue Buffalo for providing quality food to the adoption hopefuls during their store stay, and Earth-Rated for stocking their promoters with the best environmentally friendly poop bags on the planet!

David Del Grande Morley Rosenberg

Continued from Page 12

Continued from Page 12

“There’s childcare, community housing, and many more [issues], and it’s become so expensive to just live and get by,” she said. “You might afford a place to live, but it’s probably in a different city. People can’t afford to live in the place where they grew up anymore. Affordability in the city is very important.” Having fallen in love with Toronto, Dyson says she truly wants to help every single Torontonian live a

better life. She says a city is nothing without its residents and Toronto’s diversity is key. “Toronto’s motto is diversity,” said Dyson. “My kids are mixed raced; their dad is Chinese. What I love is that my kids are not exotic. Because there’s so much variety, they belong in their neighbourhood. Other people look like them.” Dyson said she’s running for election for the purpose of finding those people and neighbours who need help.

In terms of the new ward’s issues, Del Grande wants to tackle transit, affordability and safety first and foremost. He wants to advocate for the construction of a relief subway line, increase the housing supply, and work closely with police to identify criminal activity in the area. Del Grande describes these issues as equally important. However, he believes affordability is becoming a growing issue for the city. “In order to have a successful city for the future, we have to be able to afford to live in it,” he said. He believes that an unaffordable city is a city that pushes its most vulnerable people away and discourages young

people from moving into the area. When it comes to the other candidates, Del Grande says that he is relieved that all the others seem to agree on the area’s issues. “I am really glad that all the candidates in the Beaches–East York area are kind of on the same page on the main issues that we have right now,” he said. Del Grande has lived in East York for the past nine years with his wife and children. He has been a board member of his local community association (DECA) and is also a community advisor at Michael Garron Hospital. On municipal election day, Del Grande is hoping to win and to take his childhood interest in politics to the next level representing Ward 19.

Continued from Page 12 “Each sub-committee will deal with local problems and the councillors will need to check in on a weekly basis with those four or five committees and see what the problems are in each area and come up with solutions.” One of Rosenberg’s main concerns is the accommodation of senior citizens. “I think there needs to be accommodations for seniors such as more housing in basement apartments, granny suites, things of that nature. The seniors can help by dealing with neighbourhood watch programs to see what’s going on in the area. They can be involved with the schools, troubled kids, the police, etcetera.” Rosenberg’s platform focuses on transportation, affordable housing, crime,

community and the environment. One of the key issues facing Ward 19 is financing. “What I’m saying is that the key issue, before you address housing and transportation and all, is to get the federal and provincial government in one room with the city in order to come up with some more money to deal with the problems the city faces only partially with the provincial and federal governments or not at all,” said Rosenberg. “I say get more money so they can start doing things without going to the feds or the province every other day and asking for more funds. That’s number one.” Rosenberg hopes that candidates will keep up their community efforts long after the election. He says there needs to be a coordinated effort in order to see change.

Where design and decor dreams come true By Surina Nath

THE STAGING Warehouse located on Fallingbrook Road just north of Kingston Road, is run by Sharon Bowering who is also known in the community for her design company called Mutual Designs. Both companies have staged over 100 houses in this area over the last several years, and Sharon strives to create spaces where clients can come in and work together with staff on innovative ideas to update their homes. “Mutual Designs was doing so well we decided to find a retail shop where we could bring in unique, handmade, vintage items that we really love and would use in our own homes,” she said.

The Staging Warehouse has been open for 15 months and is all about inspiration and keeping clients on budget. “I really like working in tandem with the client,” she said. “We want people to sit down, relax, have a coffee with us, and find pieces that truly speak to them.” Bowering’s rate is very reasonable, and she makes sure everything in the store is affordable for her clients. New pieces from local artists are also refreshed frequently to inspire clients — you’ll find work from local artists such as Erwin Buck, Barb Brown, Ruben Zellermayer and Ron Burns. Despite her retail success, this wife, mother, and former Director of the Toronto Chamber of Commerce, can’t help but question why

there is no unified business community to provide support to those running local businesses.

“We need to bring everyone together and have one business association for the area,” she said.

He also added that the community has reached out to him through his Facebook page, and this is where he has expanded his electoral campaign. When asked his opinion on the reduction of the number of wards, Marra admitted that he is of two minds. “I see the argument that local representation is going to be degraded some, because you’re going to be asking a council-

We need to ensure that police are knowledgeable of the specific issues being faced by communities, thereby allowing them to make more informed policing decisions when interacting with residents,” she said. The position of Toronto city councillor has historically lacked gender and racial diversity. Despite this fact, Stephen has never felt hesitant to run as councillor. “The his-

toric makeup of council hasn’t deterred me from running. In fact, with the reduction in the number of council members, I feel it’s important now more than ever to run so that the voices of women and visible minorities are heard,” she said. Stephen currently resides in the Upper Beaches. For the upcoming Ward 19 election she is ready to make herself heard and bring new strategies to help fix relations within the city and her local ward.
