Back-to-school blues for trustee By Susan Legge

Volume 47 No.12

THE EFFECTS of slashing Toronto city council nearly in half with the passing of Bill 5 by Premier Ford’s majority government could make it difficult for school trustees to make change, and won’t necessarily save the province money, said Ward 15 Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Trustee Jennifer Story in an interview with Beach Metro News. Story, who took the helm as trustee in 2014, and previously worked with the city as the chief of staff to Ward 19 Councillor Mike Layton, says she currently works with two city councillors in the Toronto—Dan-

forth area: Councillors Janet Davis in Ward 31 and Mary Fragedakis in Ward 29. With the new headcount and ward reductions coming in October, Story says she’ll be working with one less councillor and believes less time and less focus will be spent on student issues. “For example, I’m working on creating safe routes to schools and road safety, and I will only have one councillor to work with on these issues,” she said. “This change will affect parents and students.” Continued on Page 23

Reunion tour brings Degrassi kids back to the Beach Left to right: Three original cast members from the Degrassi Junior High TV series, Joey Jeremiah (Pat Mastroianni), Christine “Spike” Nelson (Amanda Stepto) and Caitlin Ryan (Stacie Mistysyn) answered questions from the sold-out audience at The Fox Theatre on August 25 where episodes filmed at the theatre in the late ’80s, as well as the 1992 made-for-TV series finale, School’s Out, were screened. What are they up to today? Mistysyn is now a fulltime mom to two kids. She delivered the Beach Metro News when it was the Ward 9 News and went to Malvern Collegiate Institute. Mastroianni now runs the Comic-Con division of a talent agency, and Stepto, whose character had the biggest and best (and currently pink) hair no longer acts and is enjoying life in Mississauga. Pot sales online this fall and in retail shops in April 2019 By Marjan Asadullah

WITH LOTS of empty stores for lease in and around the Beach community and marijuana becoming legal in Ontario for the first time as early as this fall, the question is: will cannabis stores take over the area? Before making such assumptions, it’s important to hone in on some facts. The Ontario government will legalize cannabis sales on October 17, however, it will only be accessible online through the Ontario Cannabis Store’s mail-order service for now. People can order 30 grams (which is one ounce) of dried recreational cannabis at one time for personal use. People can also purchase legal seeds from the online store to grow up to four plants per residence. Meanwhile, because the legalization of

cannabis was done at a federal level, the municipal levels of government are trying to figure out bylaws and licensing requirements as to how privately owned cannabis shops will allow businesses to function and which level of government will be responsible for inspection and law enforcement. Roderick Elliot, a resident of the Beach for seven years, and senior vice-president of Global Public Affairs, a firm which provides public affairs counsel to a range of clients, is also the founder of cannabisCONNECT which provides advice to the cannabis sector. Elliot says that the biggest misconception about the legalization of cannabis is that it is a free-for-all when, in fact, it is a process that will be rolled out slowly. “The process of legalizing cannabis took consultation from different levels of govern-

ment and as far as any current cannabis stores opened, those stores will be illegal and could face massive fines,” says Elliot.

Laneway housing offers solutions to the current Toronto housing crisis By Marjan Asadullah

AS THE population of Toronto grows, and the availability of affordable housing takes a nose dive, laneway housing could help resolve a problem to what has become one of the city’s most talked about and toughest challenges— finding decent, affordable rental housing in the city. Back in the summer of 2017, the Toronto and East York Community Council (TEYCC) approved regulations that would allow homeowners with properties that backed onto laneways to build a residential suite at the back of their lot. Now that Toronto city council approved the bylaw amendments this summer, the suites are a go—it is now possible to apply for a permit and build a laneway home in Toronto and East York. With 100,000 new residents being added to the population of the GTA each year, Toronto is in desperate need of rental housing solutions and laneway housing could offer well over 2000 such units to help with this crisis, according to City of Toronto data.

PHOTO: SUSAN LEGGE

Laneway housing has become wildly popular in cities such as Vancouver where you can find homes built into pre-existing lots and laneways. Over 800 permits have been issued in Vancouver so far, and over 500 laneway homes have been built according to Lanescape.ca, a Torontobased laneway housing advocacy group. Toronto could have adopted the idea of laneway housing back in 2006, but the proposal was rejected by the city council. With cities such as Ottawa and Vancouver ahead of

the curve, having adopted policies for backyard housing back in 2009, the success of these intensification projects has helped pave the way for laneway housing in Toronto. Groups such as Lanescape, which consists of Torontoarea developers, builders, planners, architects and designers, also helped move the needle as well. In terms of requirements, according to the city, laneway housing cannot be any more than two storeys in height or six metres tall and must be a single unit dwelling. Suites must also be a

distance of 5 to 7.5 metres away from the rear of the existing home depending on height. A setback from the rear property line is also required so that it is a minimum of 1.5 metres away and the dimensions of the suite cannot exceed eight metres in width and 10 metres in length. Tiny but liveable. There will be no parking space requirements with the creation of a laneway suite. Toronto is now one step — and over 2000 potential housing solutions — closer to dealing with its affordable housing crisis.

Avoid termite damage in your home with early detection By Katia Perschy

PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

It is rocket science Erin Stewart (right), a Grade 12 student at Malvern Collegiate Institute, recently attended the Advanced Space Academy at NASA/U.S. Space Rocket Centre in Alabama. The program concentrates on STEM learning and focuses on simulations of missions to space. Erin hopes to attend University of Toronto and study astrophysics. By Beach Metro News Staff

MALVERN COLLEGIATE student Erin Stewart spent part of her summer attending the Advanced Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp, Space Camp Robotics, Aviation Challenge and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The week-long educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while training students with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem solving. This program is specifically designed for trainees who have a particular interest in space exploration. Stewart spent the week training with a team that flew a simulated space mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Once aboard the ISS, the crew

participated in experiments and successfully completed an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), or spacewalk. Stewart and crew returned to earth in time to graduate with honours. Space Camp operates year-round in Huntsville, Alabama, and uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM subjects. Students sleep in quarters designed to resemble the ISS and train in simulators like those used by NASA. More than 750,000 trainees have graduated from Space Camp since its inception in 1982, including European Space Agency astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti and NASA astronauts Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Dr. Kate Rubins and Dr. Serena Auñón, who recently launched to the International Space Station. Visit www.spacecamp.com for more information about the academy.

BUYING A new home or starting a big renovation can be an exciting adventure, though feelings of excitement can quickly turn to feelings of terror if termites get involved. The tiny 8-millimetrelong winged insects have been present in Toronto for almost a century, though the number of infestations in the city continue to rise. Historically, infestations were confined to the downtown core, though without proper treatment and adequate public information on how to recognize an infestation, termites have continued to spread to every corner of the city including Leslieville, Danforth Village and the Beach. Termites thrive in warm, damp structures where wood and soil meet, garages and basements being high risk areas. The insects burrow from the inside out while leaving the visible wall untouched, making them almost undetectable if you don’t know what you should be looking for. If termites are left untreated, they can cause severe structural damage to homes which can cost homeowners thousands of dollars in repairs. When buying a home anywhere in a termiteaffected city like Toronto, it’s important to do your research and conduct a thorough professional inspection. As a homeowner, early detection will help you quickly get a handle on the problem and can prevent significant damage. “Setting up base stations around the perimeter of your

home will tell you if there are termites on your property, and if there are termites on your property, then there are definitely termites in your home,” said Michael Meagher from Bugs R Us, a local pest control company. The key to avoiding the type of damage inflicted by a termite-takeover is thorough understanding what to look for and when to seek professional help. Base stations are simply pieces of firewood, and finding any termites on the wood around your house is a strong indicator of their presence within. Testing with base stations a few times a year is the best way to keep yourself informed on the state of your home, short of tearing down walls, that is. If you do find termites, either through testing with base stations, during a renovation or after an inspection, Meagher says the best way to treat them is with the termiticide Altriset.

passed from insect to insect, effortlessly bringing down the entire colony. Meagher said that the termiticide presents no hazards to humans or pets, and won’t harm your garden or any of the insects and animals that live in them. “Toronto’s termite problem is worse today than it was 20 years ago, so it’s really important to get the message out about Altriset because it’s helping cities become completely termite-free.” When it comes to prevention, there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk of termites, like not leaving excess wood around your home, eliminating moisture like puddles and water in gutters, repairing cracks in the foundation and keeping vulnerable spots like crawlspaces and garages well ventilated. Homes are frequently sold with active termite infestations, both with and without the seller’s knowledge. If the seller has previously treated the home for termites, there should be some form of warranty passed on to the buyer. Even if no record of termite activity exists, it’s important that buyers have an inspection done – Michael Meagher before closing on a property as termite infestations are often not covered by “I’ve been using Altriset home insurance policies, for four years now and potentially leaving new it’s worked every single owners with staggering time,” he said. “If it’s use repair costs. was more widespread, A mistake often made which would be possible by prospective buyers and through a government- owners is the assumption based prevention initiative, that brick and stone homes Toronto wouldn’t have a are immune to termite termite problem.” infestations, when in reality, Altriset works by infecting termites will always find the termites closest to where a way in regardless of it is sprayed, and is then material.

Martin Goodman Trail moves forward

By Josh Sherman

THE WOODBINE bike lanes are getting a connection to the Martin Goodman Trail south of Queen Street East nearly a year after they were installed. On July 30, city council approved a plan to install two new traffic signals—one at Woodbine and Dixon Avenues, another at Queen, Lockwood Road and Sarah Ashbridge Avenue—needed for the extension which was approved with the original lanes. The forthcoming extension continues south along Lockwood Road from the contra-flow bike lane on Dixon east of Woodbine. The lane runs south of Queen on Sarah Ashbridge, then turns east on Boardwalk Drive before running south on Joseph Duggan Road. City staff looked at several options for the extension,

including continuing the bike lanes down Woodbine, before recommending the route that was approved. Continuing the lanes along Woodbine faced a number of issues. It would have required removing on-street parking north of Queen. “South of Queen Street, reconfiguration of traffic and bike lanes on Woodbine Avenue/Lake Shore Boulevard are not feasible to maintain transit and general traffic flow,” the city said in a statement. Ward 32 councillor MaryMargaret McMahon said safety was also a concern as Woodbine turns into Lake Shore Boulevard East. “Ideally, I would have loved for it to go straight down Woodbine right to the Martin Goodman Trail… but that’s not feasible,” she said. Since the bike lanes were installed last year, there has been a surge in cycling on Woodbine, newly released

numbers from the city suggest. From May 12 to 18 this year, city staff undertook cyclist counts at Woodbine and Cosburn Avenue and Gerrard Street East and found the average number of cyclists over a 12-hour period ranged from 220 to 230, up from 70 to 80 over the same period in 2016. “The numbers have exceeded our predictions,” said McMahon, who was surprised to see such a rise in cycling. In May, the city says motorists on Woodbine had “minimal” increases in travel times of under a minute during morning peak hours. During the afternoon rush, travel times increased by up to 2.5 minutes, which the city considers a “moderate” increase. “The sky’s not falling with the increase to travel time— it’s minimal,” McMahon added. The new signals will be installed in 2019.

Police Beat On August 23, Toronto Police Service Hold Up squad arrested a man wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for a series of five bank robberies including the November 10, 2017 robbery at Queen Street East and Woodbine Avenue in the Beach. Michael Joseph Karas, 61, of no fixed address, has been charged with five robberies. According to Postmedia sources, the accused served a jail sentence in Thailand for the murder of a 27-year-old Thai woman. When he returned to Canada, he was arrested in Winnipeg.

Everyone Has a Story to Tell

Mrs. South Asia Canada takes nothing for granted By Fiona Bramzell

WHETHER YOU believe life is shaped by karma or governed by our own personal drive and determination, the newly crowned Mrs. South Asia Canada, Amita Seth, would probably tell you it’s a little of both. This latest achievement epitomizes Amita’s willingness to jump in, take chances and enthusiastically grab everything life has to offer. Living what many would consider the Canadian dream—a house in the Beach, a loving close-knit family and a successful business—it hasn’t always been this way. For Amita, knowing what the alternative could have been if she and her husband Vikram had stayed in their native country of India makes her appreciate every second. Growing up in Punjab wasn’t a terrible existence when compared to many people in India, with its extreme levels of poverty that most could not imagine. Amita and her husband both had good educations and careers, and knew they wanted more than India had to offer. And so, in 2001, they made the brave decision to leave family and friends behind and start a new life in a new country and carve out a better future for their family which includes two young daughters, Eva and Poorva. “Coming to Canada was the best thing we could have done,” says Amita. “It was certainly tough in the beginning, though. We didn’t know anyone and, despite having good qualifications, Vikram and I both had to get factory jobs, working alternative shifts so one of us could always be home with the girls,” she said. “But, even then, I knew the opportunities were here and we just worked as hard as we could to get ahead and make a good life for ourselves.” The ability to speak perfect English, thanks to it being taught as mandatory educational language in India, combined with a chance offer to work as a receptionist, was her way out of the factory and since then Amita and her family have just gone from strength to strength. In addition to her belief that everyone should be given the chance to pursue their dreams, Amita is also a true believer in not putting limits on ourselves. Entering the Mrs. South Asia Canada contest this year goes to show that she doesn’t just talk the talk,

Beacher Amita Seth entered the Mrs. South Asia contest on a whim and walked away as the winner.

#Follow us on Instagram: she gets up on that stage and walks the walk too! “Entering the Mrs. South Asia Canada contest was something I never would have dreamed of doing,” she said. “A friend of mine sent me a Facebook link and I thought, why not? I figured it would be fun at the very least, but I certainly never expected to win!” The pageant, which took place at the Rose Theatre in Brampton on July 28, was a culmination of a week-long training where the 17 contestants were put through their paces by renowned Bollywood pageant director Kaushik Ghosh. “The training was hard work,” she said. “But the contestants were wonderful, and we all supported each other.” The pageant itself was quite the marathon event, consisting of five rounds, numerous outfit changes, a talent portion—Amita sang —and a question and answer session. “When my name was announced as the winner, I just couldn’t believe it. It was a dream come true! And I was also named the People’s Choice winner, which was really meaningful to me,” she added. Unlike some pageants, the role of Mrs. South Asia doesn’t come with a yearlong commitment to public

appearances or duties and it’s really up to Amita to market herself in the media if she wishes to do so. She has appeared on the radio and Omni Television but life has largely returned to normal which includes participating in acting classes, something she is extremely passionate about. “Acting has been a lifelong dream of mine,” she said, adding that she counts her weekly classes as ‘me time’ where she can become fully absorbed in what she loves. “As women, it’s important for us to take care of ourselves and, by doing so, we can then give more to others.” For Amita this includes travelling to India at some point in the near future to work with an organization called The Earth Saviours, an NGO founded by her friend Ravi Kalra, that provides shelter and support for some of the country’s most needy. “If I can make a small difference in the life of just one person, that’s worth more to me than anything,” said Amita. “I am truly blessed to have the life I do. You will never hear me complain about the weather or taxes here—I’ve seen the alternative and it’s a reminder every day of just how lucky I am.”

In My Opinion

Free mental health sessions starting September 11 Jason Balgopal 2017 Beach Citizen of the Year

E

very Tuesday evening for nearly four years now, people have been gathering at Community Centre 55 because they, or a loved one, face a mental wellness challenge. There is the depressive who has worn out his family support because he is constantly morose and continually seeks ways to become happy— ways his family doesn’t know how to provide. There is the hoarder who is at risk of losing her family because her home is so filled with items that

there is no room for people. There are others dealing with anxiety or bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. The Beaches Mental Wellness Peer-to-Peer Support Group offers a free and confidential place for people to do what they can’t do by themselves: share their stories with like-minded people, receive supportive feedback from those who have travelled in their shoes, and lose the sense of loneliness that so often is a part of dealing with a mental wellness challenge. The group has been a fantastic success; members have not only said the group helps them, but they have written letters-to-the-editor in this paper extolling how much it has

helped them. However, there is more to be done. One of the themes often discussed at the Beaches Mental Wellness meetings is the lack of affordable, accessible and convenient professional counselling services. In addition to the mental health issues they face, when people seek support they are often bedevilled by a Byzantine bureaucracy which offers expensive therapy months down the road. Consequently, Beaches Mental Wellness, with the generous financial support of Community Centre 55, will commence to offer professional mental health assistance with a registered social worker in two forms starting in September 2018.

A group mindfulness session will commence on Tuesday, September 11 and run every two weeks thereafter. Mindfulness is a practice which has been proven to help reduce depression and anxiety. Each session will run from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. each alternate Tuesday. It is a free session, open to anyone, with no need to register—just show up with an open mind at Community Centre 55. All are welcome to stay for the customary Beaches Mental Wellness group which will meet immediately thereafter at 7:00 p.m. Private, one-on-one professional counselling sessions will commence on Sunday, September 9 and run ev-

ery two weeks thereafter. The sessions will be for 45 minutes each, and will be scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. These sessions will be available to those who have consistently attended the Beaches Mental Wellness Peer-to-Peer Support Group, require further support, and sign up in the group. Please feel free to come out and access these services as we work to address mental wellness issues in our community. Our strength is in making ourselves healthier in all ways, and removing the stigma of mental illness. You are not alone—together we can transform mental illness into mental wellness.

Letters to the Editor

Reader says e-bikes ‘the better way’ to get around town RE: LETTER to the Editor, August 21: Three buses to travel 8 km I live on Midland at Kingston Road in Scarborough. Currently, Toronto bike stores are selling electric power-assisted bicycles which can be had with a good credit rating or a parent’s cosignature. Monthly loan payments are about half of a monthly TTC Metropass. You can go directly from A to B to C with zero waiting time. Available 24/7, there’s always a free seat and with battery powerassistance, in Canada you can reach a legal maximum speed of 32 km/h. Quicker than public transit and faster than automobiles too because they’re usually sitting clogged bumper-to-bumper in traffic. Today, recent reports suggest

there are already over 200 million electric bikes in China. Last year in Europe, the Germans bought over 700,000. One-in-four bikes in bike-friendly Holland is now power-assisted. Sweden is offering rebates to its population to buy electric bikes. Closer to home, the city of Laval in Quebec, think of it as the Scarborough of Toronto, is offering a $400 rebate to offset the purchase of electric bikes. This will of course only interest folks who like to get around quicker while saving lots of money (wink). Unfortunately, public transit vehicles like subways and buses and streetcars (and cars) should be considered “stone age” in urban transportation terms. Lock Hughs Midland Avenue

Call 311, not a city councillor OUR CITY councillors have shown just how out of touch they are with their constituents. Doug Ford was elected on the premise he would save the taxpayers’ money. Whereas, councillors want to add three more councillors, the cost of which is to be paid with our taxes, Mr. Ford rightly wishes to reduce this number. Those whose jobs are in jeopardy bemoan this as being a tactic to get rid of those against whom he has a grudge. When first amalgamated, Toronto needed numerous councillors so that each district would be equally represented. We now have [City of Toronto’s phone line] 311 for many of the things we used to need our councillor for so they could act on

our behalf. We may now contact 311, follow up using a reference number, and if necessary, escalate issues to a manager. I’d like to thank Mr. Ford for restoring my faith in politicians, and hope our next mayor will concur with many of Mr. Ford’s ideas, and do what’s best for those living in and visiting Toronto. But alas, I fear those who don’t like Mr. Ford will disagree with his every attempt at restoring our city and province to the greatness it once was. Dee C. Burns East York

Vegan-vegetarian restos where art thou? AS A long-time Scarborough resident and an avid reader of community-based newspapers includ-

ing the Beach Metro News, a topic of discussion and/or interest has been on my mind and in my heart for quite awhile now—one which I feel your readers may also share an interest in, namely vegetarian and vegan dining in Scarborough. Thus, I feel it timely to speak up on behalf of other Scarborough-based vegetarians/vegans who would also like to enjoy a vegetarian or vegan meal in an environment right here in our own neighbourhood. If there are any restaurant owners reading this or anyone else who is interested in opening up a “pure” vegetarian or vegan diner in Scarborough which would offer more options—please do so! We Scarborough-veggies would love to support your place! R. R.

“And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” (Matthew 7:25) The Leuty Lifeguard Station is the most photographed landmark in the Beach. I too felt compelled to point a camera at it back in 2001 when it was functioning. I guess building on sand wasn’t too smart—flooding and high tides have shifted its footings.

Indeed, the station is not in the same spot as the last time I photographed it, and it is undergoing a big shift to keep it dry. The city is moving the Leuty to reduce the risk of damage due to increasingly high water levels. According to a sign posted at the site by the city, a “new deck and launch dock will provide lifeguards with improved access to the water.” Do you have an old photo of the Beach you’d like to share? Urban Suburban Mommy

‘Mom vision’ is a super power and a curse with little relief Elisa Keay is a local momblogger who sees the humour in it all UrbanSuburbanMommy.com

I

booked the family’s annual eye exams and when we saw our optometrist, I asked her to explain why my eyes work so differently than the rest of my family. She laughed and handed me a pamphlet on ‘mom vision’. Apparently something happens to our eyes when we have children. It’s like our super power. It’s not a fun super power like flying or super speed (now those would be useful). No, it’s more of a bummer super power—actually it’s the topof-the-pile of rejected super powers in my opinion. ‘Mom vision’ is that uncanny ability to see things that are right in front of us. Not only the ability to see things that are there, but the ability to see the things your kids are doing behind you. I first realized I was experiencing vision issues when I’d look at my kids’ messy rooms and tell them to clean up, only to hear “Mom, they’re clean!” How can they see a clean room when I can see dirty clothes on the floor, toys on every surface and a hoarder’s supply of gum

wrappers behind one of the beds (seriously, I don’t recall even buying that gum). How, when we are looking at the same room, do they not see the mess but I do? That’s ‘mom vision’. How can we go to the same bathroom and they don’t see the empty toilet paper roll that needs changing but I do? How come they have to ask where the orange juice is, and can’t see it on the middle shelf of the fridge where it always is you ask? It’s ‘mom vision’. ‘Mom vision’ enables us to see the dirt on their favourite shirt even when they put it on and think it’s fine to wear. It enables us to see their beds are not made. ‘Mom vision’ is why we’re telling them to wash their hands all the time —how do they not see when their hands are covered in mud or paint or spaghetti sauce? The pamphlet on ‘mom vision’ was very helpful. If you have any of the abovementioned challenges, you’ve got ‘mom vision’. The pamphlet also describes varying degrees of ‘mom vision’. I have a severe case. For example, I’m able to tell one of my boys not to touch the other, just mere seconds before he does—even without watching him! I’m able to say “Put that down

right now!” without turning around and actually getting a visual of my little darling trying to abscond with my iPhone. When my mom used to do that to me, I’d wonder if she really did have eyes in the back of her head. And then, with the arrival of my first child, my ‘mom vision’ came in. The bad news is that there is no cure for ‘mom vision’. The good news is, it may become less of an issue over time. It seems to be strongest for the first 15 to 20 years of your child’s life, though it does tend to improve significantly when your child moves out on their own. The pamphlet does warn, in fine print, that the time period is per child, and restarts with every new member of the family. It also warns that some spouses and neighbourhood kids may cause symptoms to worsen significantly. Temporary relief for either type of vision may be found by ingesting wine or junk food, utilizing the services of a babysitter or treatments at the spa. It should be noted that dads occassional suffer from this too, and the severity of symptoms can range from mild to chronic and treatment may differ. It is not recommended to

use ‘mom vision’ in other people’s homes or on other people’s children, though it may be necessary to explain the findings of your ‘mom vision’ to your children several times for best results. Toronto Beaches Film Festival back for its seventh year of premieres By Susan Legge

THE TORONTO Beaches Film Festival (TBFF) celebrates its seventh year of premiering films from around the globe and attracting film-goers who want something a little different from, say, TIFF. Running from September 6-8 at the Beach United Performance Hall at 140 Wineva Avenue, TBFF co-founders, David Finley, an award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter, and long-time Beach resident and Shannonn Kelly, the festival’s artistic managing director, started with a couple of film events in the Beach and soon discovered that audiences loved it and wanted more. Focusing on films and documentaries (every film is a premiere) on topics that resonate with area residents, such as activism, animal rights, beach culture, biking, environment, extreme adventure, family, green-living, marine biology, oceans, paddling, veganism and much more, since its inception, the festival has had submissions and film premieres from about 30 countries. “We felt the Beaches, with its distinct identity and thriving arts com-

munity, was a natural location for its own annual independent film festival,” said Kelly. “As we grow, the Toronto Beaches Film Festival wants to reflect and become a larger part of the Beaches’ cultural life.” With the festival’s move to the new Beach United venue as of last year, its beautiful location, free (but limited) parking, huge projection screen and amazing sound system is the envy of any TIFF experience, and tickets start at $12 each or two for $20. For a complete schedule and tickets info, visit torontobeachesfilmfest.com.

This year’s winning Toronto Beach Film Festival poster was designed by 15-year-old Notre Dame High School student, Isah Miftahual.

Local photographer’s lake image ends up on Canadian stamp this month By Josh Sherman

AS LOCAL resident Garry Cass was walking his dog along Woodbine Beach one morning last September, he noticed something out of the ordinary. “It was a blue sky, except for the funnel cloud out on the lake,” he said. It’s not every day you see a funnel cloud on Lake Ontario, so he snapped a picture with his iPhone and later that day sent it to his kids. Then, out of the blue, Cass was contacted by Canada Post. The national postal service wanted to use his image on a series of stamps. A surprised Cass said OK to the request. “I didn’t know that they were doing a series of weather

stamps,” he said. It turns out Canada Post had caught wind of the photo after seeing it on the Weather Network after one of Cass’ sons had submitted it. Even though Cass’ image will appear across the country, he by no means considers himself a professional photographer. “If you take enough pictures, you’re gonna get some good ones,” he said. The photograph is featured as part of a 10-stamp Weather Wonders collection which Canada Post published to its website earlier this summer. Cass has already ordered “a bunch” of the stamps to give to his family. The series is available for a limited time at participating post offices.

Friends of Glen Stewart Ravine This summer, the Ravine Ramblers Jr. children were introduced to Glen Stewart Ravine and how to care for it through a fun song and the advice of “Stinkarama,” a friendly puppet skunk. Everyone went home with their very own Ravine Ramblers Club card. For future events and info, join the Friends of Glen Stewart Ravine Facebook group online.

ecently, my friend and I were chatting about what our kids will need for back to school, as her daughter is going away to first year at the University of Guelph. She was bemoaning the idea of hitting a mall, so I asked her what items are on her most-wanted list. The top-of-the-list items that mom wants for her daughter’s dorm room will promote studying and will make her girl feel comfy while away. The items include a desk, a lamp, a throw blanket for chilly nights, a

robe, and maybe a plant (the kind you can’t kill), mugs for tea and pillows for her bed. What’s on her daughter’s most wanted list? Something loose and cool to study in, a small carry-all for when she is out, glittery eye shadow, pictures from home, essential oils and nice teas. Good news! Everything you need for back to school can be found locally in our fabulous east-end neighbourhoods and shops. Consider this narrow metal desk made from reclaimed steel and a Coleman stove base. It’s the perfect size for a dorm room. Add a brass lamp with an adjustable arm, a vintage throw, container for small essentials (like keys and lipstick), an easy to care for succulent and study time is suddenly attrac-

Back-to-school items are available all around the east end, including these items from The Leslieville Flea, above and right.

(all items from The Leslieville Flea) While in Leslieville, check out Gadabout! This treasure trove of history was recently voted the number one vintage store in Toronto by BlogTO. During a recent visit I found a selection of retro mugs, throw pillows and comfy jeans. Owner Victoria and her crew are always available to find what you are looking for, and for those of you in the film biz, they do rentals! In Kingston Road Village, pop in to Blossom & Tempest for a small carry all, Courage Foods for special teas, and just a little further east, Collected Joy. This local shop describes its wares as functional, locally made and primarily sustainable. Look for robes from east end maker Panuk, locally made, organic cosmetics including metallic eye shadow from ‘da lish’ Cosmetics and

essential oils from Leaves of Trees made by another east ender, Roohi Qureshi. Their eucalyptus headache balm promotes mental clarity and will keep last minute crammers refreshed when prepping for exams. It’s great to know you don’t even have to leave our neighbourhood to get everything you need for back to school.

It continues to operate with an incredible staff, including her sister and children among the other instructors. The core values that drove the development of the studio are a strong part of what has drawn generations of families to return. Jane has taught the children and even grandchildren of some of her former students. Pegasus doesn’t focus on developing professional dancers, it strives to instill a passion for dance, music and art while developing positive body image, self-expression and confidence. physical safety are valued and promoted. It includes stringent vetting of all staff, including background checks and first aid certification. Through dance and arts, Pegasus Dance Studios also instills leadership and a sense of community. “Performance groups do local events. We use our art form to empower our youngsters here, near and afar. It’s more than just great dancing, it’s how we’re using the art to empower the children,” she explains. Teaching and investing core values in the development of the whole child is an essential element. As students move through the years and levels at Pegasus Dance Studio, Jane describes the community as an extended family. With so many children growing up in the program, starting at two years of age, and continuing to hone their passion and skills through to high school graduation, she says it’s emotional seeing kids move on into the world—but they leave having been empowered by their years in the school. There are even dance graduations and alumni events as students enjoy staying connected to their dance family and lifelong community. ’m a traditionalist in some ways. I like roses. They’re pretty, they’re romantic, they smell nice and they even taste good (some of them, anyway). I’ve never been fond of the fusspot hybrid teas, which my dad used to drench in stinky, poisonous malathion to save them from a platoon of bugs and diseases. And the Royal Botanical Garden (RBG) in Burlington, the largest botanical garden in Canada, shares my views. They’ve ripped out their 50-yearold rose garden and started an entirely new one. Now, the RBG works on a huge scale and mountains of chemically treated soil was removed and replaced with clean soil and compost. More than 3,000 new roses were planted, chosen for cold-hardiness, disease resistance, drought tolerance, and overall ease of care. But just because they do things in a big way doesn’t mean you can’t do the same thing in your own small garden. You can learn a lot of things from the RBG’s new beds of roses. Not just roses One of the things that impressed me the most was that the RBG rose garden is no longer bed after bed of roses growing in snooty isolation. The new garden mixes perennials and even herbs among

the rose bushes. Native pollinators like purple coneflower (Echinacea) pop up frequently, and I was startled to see drifts of dill here and there. “Dill is a host plant for the tachinid fly, an enemy of Japanese beetles,” explains Alex Henderson, RBG’s curator of collections. He added that the perennials were also added to give visitors an idea of how to use roses in their own mixed flower gardens. Rainbow of colours The new rose garden also breaks free from the old-fashion botanical garden model by arranging the plants by colour, rather than species. “All types of roses are planted together here,” says Henderson. “Floribundas, tea roses, and hardy Canadian introductions like ‘Canadian Shield.’ “The colour transitions between beds are important,” he added. So instead of seeing blobs of red and pink and yellow here and there, you walk into a rainbow of colours, moving from yellow to orange and peach to pink to red. With a reflecting pool running down the middle of the fan-shaped garden, it’s a stunning display. Changing with the times Plants, ecological awareness, climate and budgets have all seen dramatic changes in just the last couple of decades. Ontario’s 2009 pesticide ban delivered a huge blow to the old-time roses that needed sprays, dusts and constant clean-up. All those elements contributed to the garden’s makeover. Fortunately, many new roses are being bred to be disease-resistant and less labour-intensive. They don’t de-

mand as much deadheading and pruning, so only three full-time gardeners take care of the RBG’s roses. Miles of underground pipes deliver drip irrigation directly to the roots, saving water and encouraging them to grow down deep, safe from cold and heat. The rich soil in the beds takes the place of artificial fertilizers, reducing runoff to nearby waterlands, and a three-inch layer of mulch caps everything off with a thick, protective blanket. Work on the garden began in 2017, and opening day was set for summer 2018. But there was one last glitch to work through. As you may remember, last spring’s weather brought surprise cold snaps, freezing rain and even hail, so planting the two-and-a-half-acre garden was delayed for weeks. Everyone wondered if the young shrubs would bloom this year—and yes, they did—making a spectacular appearance for opening day in June. And they’re still there, waiting for you to come by and say hello. The Rose Garden at RBG The rose garden at the Royal Botanical Garden is one of several gardens within Hendrie Park. Enter (admission fee) and park at the RBG Centre located at 680 Plains Rd. in Burlington. The gardens are open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Refreshments are available afternoons at the Greenhouse Café in the main building or the open-air Turner Pavilion teahouse in the rose garden. A new custom build for Dan Silva By Jacqueline Spicer

IN 1993, after many years in the custom construction business in Canada and the U.S., Dan Silva began his search for a community where he could put down roots, spend quality time with his family, and see the fruits of his labours all

around him—a place with a small town feel within a large city. “The people were different, more down-to-earth,” he recalls. “Everyone seemed to have a dog. Queen Street was lined with small, independent businesses. It was a little slower, a little more open and caring than other

places I’d seen. And I knew it was where I wanted to be for a very long time to come.” Dan had come from humble beginnings, and was happy to start small once again. He initially rented a flat on Glen Manor Drive, and after church one Sunday, handed out flyers door-todoor. Word spread, and so did Dan Silva Custom Builders. He hired his kids as they grew, and top tradespeople from the area also came into the fold. One referral led to another, and Dan has now spent more than 25 years designing and building custom homes in the Beach neighbourhood he calls home. In fact, on a walk through the many leafy streets in the area, you’ll discover literally hundreds of homes displaying his passion for unique design and quality construction. Things have changed a lot in those intervening years. The streetscape has changed, with a number of independent tenants replaced by larger chain stores like Starbucks and Tim Horton’s. Mid-rise condos are popping up in place of low rise and retail. New homes replaced horses as Greenwood Racetrack was torn down and devel-

hen it comes to health and beauty products, there is science and there are ‘fads’. One of the hottest new trends in oral care products is activated charcoal toothpaste. But are they actually effective? And more importantly, are they safe? The manufacturers and the marketers of charcoal-containing toothpastes make some bold claims about the benefits to oral health —these include teeth-whitening, stain removal, cavity prevention, treating gingivitis, and the removal of bacteria from the mouth. The reality is that there is no scientifically proven or documented evidence to support these claims. It is true that charcoal is natural and has been around for a long time. But just because a product is ‘natural’ does not mean that it is necessarily safe. In all likelihood, charcoal-filled toothpastes whiten teeth because of their abrasive nature. If abrasive substances are mild and used in moderation, they can be effective at removing some stains from teeth. However, the risk of course is overuse of abrasives over a long period of time, which can damage enamel and make teeth

more prone to decay. Abrasives can also be hard on exposed roots and cause an increase in tooth sensitivity. Some readers of this column might be old enough to remember Topol Smoker’s Toothpaste, which was heavily marketed in the 1980s (sadly, I am also old enough to remember!). Topol toothpaste was also abrasive in nature, but the abrasives were silica, which is sand, and baking soda. The new wave of charcoal toothpastes seems to be the reincarnation of Topol toothpaste in my opinion. The difference, of course, between the 1980s and now is the pervasive nature of Internet marketing. Information, both good and bad, propagates online at the speed of light. The bottom line: activated charcoal in toothpaste is not evil, and is probably not even bad. However, there are risks associated with overuse or chronic use over a long period of time. And of course, one should always be leery of toothpastes that are available online for $19.95! There are numerous other safe, effective and proven ways to whiten teeth and reverse the effects of smoking and drinking coffee, tea and red wine. Depending on one’s level of dental health, gum line health, and the presence of fillings, bonding or crown, different whitening methods are appropriate for different people. If in doubt about advertising claims, consult with your dentist about which method is the safest and most effective for you.

oped. And even the name changed—officially—to The Beach. A new generation inhabits many of the old homes, but what hasn’t changed is the Beach’s unique small town character, and that of the people who call it home. It’s those relationships that Dan Silva will miss most as his life and his business evolves. After a bout with cancer, Dan is passing the torch to Joel Oliveira, his right hand for 19 years, who will continue to service the Beach community with the same team, the same care, and the same attention to detail as his mentor. Dan is custom-building the next chapter of his life as he moves with his wife Kathleen to Niagara-on-theLake—another small town community with a great deal of pride. He’ll stay connected to the Beach, continuing on in an advisory capacity as Joel takes the helm of Silva Custom Builders Ltd. And, of course, he’ll carry with him the wonderful relationships he’s built these many years, along with memories of his enduring homes. The neighbourhood bids a bittersweet goodbye to Dan, but change is inevitable, and the more things change, the more they stay the same.

et’s admit it…we all check our horoscope now and then. Whether we believe in it or not, it’s always interesting and amusing to see what the stars have to say. What’s more fascinating is what wine you’re likely to sip according to your sign. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) is innovative, unpredictable, independent and extremely social. Not just any wine will do. Something that is as distinctive as you are! You’ll dig an orange wine…a white that’s made with the skins on giving it that unusual orange hue tasting robust, tart and off-the-wall. You might also like biodynamic blends. This wine (usually organic) utilizes a combination of different grapes and is created following nature and the moon’s cycles. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar.20) is emotional, creative, sensitive, and artistic often see the world through rose-coloured glasses, so a delightful, chilled rosé full of fresh watermelon, strawberries and red fruit is just the thing to fill your fantasy. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19) known as courageous, confident, and bold, you need an equally bold vino like a big, oaked Chardonnay brimming with character or a bodacious spicy Malbec. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20) the persistent and passionate ones, you loves the good life. The rich, elegant, often expensive Pinot Noir (especially red Burgundy) should be your ticket to happiness. This wine should live up to your expectations and standards of the lifestyle you deserve. Gemini (May 21-June 21) is the dual personality that can be serious and funny, both sweet and sour at the same time. The only grape wine that can match your dynamic character is Riesling. Dry, medium or sweet, this versatile

wine with its bracing acidity and vivacious citrus is perfect for you. Cancer (June 22-July 22) is the helpful, strongwilled, empathetic, and loyal that will love red Rioja or Sangiovese (Chianti, Brunello, Vino Nobile), full of vibrant red fruit and charm. The perfect accompaniments to your character. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) the dignified, decisive, romantic, a rich Cabernet or Syrah/Shiraz is just the wine to give you the strength you crave. It will certainly excite the lion in you. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept.22) your sweet, gentle, tender, reliable, grounded demeanor cries out for an equally steady wine like herbal, grassy, crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a fruity, refreshing sparkler like Moscato to play up that lovable side. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct.22) the balanced, sociable, team playing must have a bubbly (sparkling wine) known for bringing folks together more than any other nectar of the grape. Champagne should be your ultimate mate. Scorpio (Oct.23-Nov.21) possesses integrity, honesty, passion and motivation so a tannic, dark wine like Syrah/ Shiraz is something you can totally embrace. A solid wine like this is sure to deliver what your personality needs. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) are the adventurous, good-humoured, no nonsense who should sip on a wine like Malbec with its bold, drink-ability. Just the selection to match your open road policy and send you on a trip of gastronomic proportions. Finally, we have Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Hardworking and sophisticated, the choice for you is ice wine, the supreme, ultimate of late harvest wines. Alternately, Sauterne from southern Bordeaux with its honeyed lusciousness should do nicely as well. Both provide unctuous richness that is right up your alley. Any of the above suggested wines should nicely fit your character according to your astrological sign. However, feel free to experiment with others. Who knows?…perhaps you’ll discover others that the stars think match your sign as well.

veryone loves a day at the spa – the massages, the facials, those super-soft, fluffy robes. The only problem is, all that pampering comes with a cost and there’s nothing relaxing about a maxed-out credit card! Treating yourself to a spa-like treatment needn’t break the bank and you probably already have the ingredients to whip up a luxurious face mask in your kitchen. Making a natural face mask is one of the best ways to nourish your skin and supply some much-needed nutrients, not to mention the fact that it can be a fun (and frugal) way to spend an afternoon. So, here is a list of my favorite DIY facemask ingredients that will feed your skin in the most delicious way. Honey – a staple of many DIY masks, honey has natural anti-bacterial properties making it great for skin that’s prone to occasional breakouts and acne. Honey also helps to brighten dull skin, providing a fresh, radiant glow. Yogurt – this good-for-your-gut food is also a rich source of alpha hydroxy acids and a perfect base for a variety of masks. The AHA content of yogurt works as a gentle exfoliator, helping to rid the skin of dead cells that build up over time and make the skin seem tired and lifeless. Bananas – as a rich source of Vitamin A and Potassium, bananas have a number of different skincare properties but are particularly good for oilier skin and minimizing large pores. And don’t throw away that peel! Gently rubbing the peel over your face, leaving for 30 minutes and then rinsing can support the look of brighter, tighter and linefree skin when applied on a regular basis. Egg – your skin type will determine which part of the egg you’ll need to use in your mask. Those with oily skin should use just the egg white which has a natural astringent effect, tightening the skin and shrinking oversized pores. The white of the egg also contains an acne-fighting enzyme that makes it an ideal treatment for skin prone to

breakouts. For people with dry skin types, applying the protein-rich yolk will provide a deep nourishment while imparting a long-lasting hydration that’s perfect for fighting fine lines and wrinkles. Lemon Juice – the high levels of Ascorbic Acid (aka vitamin C) in lemon juice makes it a great choice if your skin is showing areas of hyperpigmentation, better known as ‘age spots’. Often occurring in older skin or sometimes after pregnancy, hyperpigmentation can be treated with the natural skin-lightening properties of lemon juice which has the added benefits of free-radical fighting antioxidants. Avocado – forget about that trendy avocado toast and start spreading this rich source of ‘good’ fat on your face instead! Avocado has super-high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E, two ingredients that are perfect for skin that is dry, rough or prone to flakiness. The oils in avocado also support collagen synthesis, helping to create stronger connective tissue that, overtime, creates skin that is more resilient as it ages. Strawberries – while it’s hard to resist the sweet juiciness of these summer berries, take advantage of their amazing acne-fighting power! High in Salicylic acid, strawberries help to remove excess, pore-clogging sebum while reducing the severity of blemishes and scars. This delicious fruit also contains vitamin C and antioxidants that will leave the skin feeling energized and rejuvenated. Coconut oil – you probably know how good coconut oil is for the diet but its antibacterial, anti-fungal and richly moisturizing properties also make it an ideal addition to any DIY dry skin mask. Light in texture and less greasy than olive oil, it will leave the skin feeling super-soft and, applied regularly, help reduce the signs of aging around the eyes and mouth. You can purchase pot online this fall...and down the street in 2019 Continued from page 1

According to the Ontario government’s website, a private retail model will be established on April 1, 2019. This will open the possibility of using retail spaces available for lease in the Beach as cannabis shops, although no locations have been confirmed by the Beach Metro News at this time. Generally, to run a legal cannabis store, the retailer will be required to possess a licence from the Ontario government, the business will need security checks and proper zoning sites, and it must be placed in a location with the consent of the

community, said Elliot. It will be next to impossible for anyone under the age of 19 to get access to cannabis as anyone who can legally purchase it will be required to have government identification. Business owners risk losing their operating licences and could face up to 14 years in jail if they get caught selling to minors. According to the Ontario. ca website, using cannabis in public places, workplaces, or in motorized vehicles could mean a fine of up to $1,000 for a first-time offence and $5,000 for a subsequent offence.

Yet, Elliot says the Beach will benefit from privatized cannabis retail shops. Since there are empty shops to take advantage of, it can help the Beach and employ people as well as provide access to those who use medical marijuana, he said. He also believes that more conversation and education on cannabis will benefit the community from misconceptions about its use. “It’s a slow progression but it [cannabis] is a booming business and the Beach would benefit from having them around,” he said.

Back-to-school blues for local trustee Continued from page 1

She believes the cut in resources will be particularly hard on families living in downtown neighbourhoods where changing demographics and new developments are a constant. “The pace of growth and the inequality— it is going to affect school boards,” she said. The reduction of councillors is part of the Better Local Government Act, 2018, which Ford says will save the province $25 million over the next four years and will bring harmony to the province by reducing Toronto’s current number of councillors from 47 to 25. “It saves the city more

than $25 million—money it can use to build transit, housing and infrastructure and make life better for the people of Toronto,” said Steve Clark, the province’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing in a press release. But Story doesn’t buy it. She’s concerned that in order to make up for the loss of councillors, “they will need more staff resources,” she said. “And the money to pay them.” The province’s sudden move to cut councillors with a municipal election looming in October has been controversial with Mayor John Tory as well as the

TDSB. He plans to sue the province, and the TDSB announced on August 29 that it will support the city in a legal challenge of the bill as well. On August 8, Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher and Story held an emergency meeting at the Metropolitan Community Church to “defend democracy in Toronto.” “Universally they [the group in attendance] were shocked and appalled,” Story said of the 150 attendees at the meeting. “And they were there to push back in the name of local democracy and local government.”
