ENVIRONMENT
If you take a closer look at the items you throw away in your trash bin, you will realize that many of them are still viable resources. Don’t throw them away; find alternative uses such as donating usable items, composting organics and bringing recyclable materials to one of our recycling centers on island. Let’s take a look at some common materials that can be recycled here on island.
Aluminum
All clean aluminum cans and bottles are recyclable; you can also get paid for recycling these items!
Cardboard
Cardboard can either be reused or recycled. Cardboard boxes usually maintain their shape after shipment and can be reused as storage or moving boxes. Be creative and use old cardboard as poster boards for projects. Once the item has become damage beyond repair or reuse, recycle it!
Paper
Paper is one of the easiest items to recycle. You can recycle a variety of paper material from mixed office paper to phonebooks and newspapers. Other items include magazines, catalogs, books and paperboard.
Plastic
You can recycle many forms of plastic bottles and containers. The most regularly recycled plastics include water, soda and juice bottles. Also recyclable are detergent, shampoo, and soap bottles. Just remember to completely empty all containers. Unfortunately, not all plastics can be recycled. These include plastic bags, forks and spoons, straws, food wrap and deli containers. Usually plastic items that are easy to break, rip or crumple are not accepted for recycling.
Glass
Glass bottles and jars of all shapes, sizes and colors are recyclable.
Remember not all places recycle the same items. What is acceptable for recycling in one place may not be accepted in another. Contact our local recycling centers for more information on the materials they do accept and if they offer payment for recyclable materials.
