Why Every Student Should Take An Aptitude Test

(NAPSI)—A question many teens are o en asked is, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” While becoming a YouTube star or a rock star may be the “ofcial” answer, most people end up pursuing careers they are familiar with through family, friends or day-to-day exposure—in many cases because they don’t know what other options they have.

It’s been proven that when students’ educations align with their aptitudes, or abilities, graduation rates increase. When using their natural talents at work, people tend to be more successful and more satis ed in their careers. One of the best ways for individuals to determine their natural abilities and what they will excel in, is by taking an aptitude assessment

What Is an Aptitude Assessment?

Unlike a personality test that might tell a student that they are an extrovert and should be in sales, aptitude tests use a series of behavioral assessments designed to identify natural talents. In their simplest form, aptitude tests look at what you like and what you do well inherently, and use science to accurately hone in on true abilities. ings that are easy for some people can prove challenging to others. For example, some

people are naturally excellent at handling numbers, others have impressive spatial awareness. Tests, such as YouScience Discovery, assess these areas and many more in a series of time-based exercises. In the case of YouScience Discovery, at the end of the aptitude assessment, each person is shown all of the potential career opportunities that are ideal for their specific talents, including careers potentially never previously considered.

Why Aptitude Tests  Have a Lasting E ect

New Opportunities: When academic and career guidance decisions are based solely on students’ reported interests, important pieces of the puzzle are missed. According to the research from e University of Missouri, interests are in uenced by perceived “societal norms” that limit the scope of students’ career exploration. Aptitude tests uncover what students do well naturally and how they solve problems. Performance measures of aptitudes go beyond what students see around them and help expand their vision of college and career opportunity and possibility.

Level Playing Field: Aptitude tests cut through social noise and biases. By empowering students with the knowledge of their unique capabilities, these exams help close the exposure gap and prepare students for ca-

reer elds they may not have otherwise thought of or even known about. Each person has natural abilities; when these talents are identi ed, students o en feel that they have more of a focus and a purpose.

Preventing Wasted College Credits: A college education is highly valuable, but too o en students enter with one major and graduate with another. In fact, up to 80% of college students change their majors at least once before graduating. Not only can this cause a headache, it can be a costly mistake. Taking an aptitude test before attending college can help get students on a college or career track that lasts. Getting a rmation that an area of study makes sense for a successful career can prevent wasted credits and years studying the “wrong” material.

Backed by research, aptitude tests provide insights into the “science of each person,” helping individuals uncover and discover new purpose and intent. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” can now be answered with a sense of condence and, importantly, can provide students with the positive reinforcement needed to pursue careers in high-demand industries where they can succeed beyond their imagination.

Radiofrequency Ablation Considerably Lessens

Back Pain

DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a lower back injury in 2001, with crushed and bulging discs in the L2, L3, L4 and L5 vertebras. After over a year of physical therapy and drugs, my pain doctor tried an epidural injection, which did not work, and then suggested I try something new at that time called a radiofrequency ablation (also called a lumbar facet rhizotomy). It’s done as an outpatient surgery and may have to be repeated.

I’ve done so many that I opt for no anesthesia. It works great; I even get up and drive myself home! I’ve learned to limit my activities, so as to not cause more damage due to my disabled pain receptors.

I have been pain- and drug-free for almost 20 years. The treatment usually lasts nine to 14 months, and when I feel the nerves starting to fire again and cause me pain, I just schedule the procedure and have them ablated again.

Whenever I see somebody walking funny due to back pain, I mention this procedure to them. Several of them have come back and thanked me for saying something.

Doctors don’t seem to promote this procedure, and I don’t understand why. It’s clearly another option besides surgery and addictive medi-

cation. It’s been a win-win for me, as opposed to surgery.

Please help promote this wonderful yet “unknown” procedure. I’m still living an active normal life at 64, 20 years after I was told I may end up in a wheelchair. — M.T.

ANSWER: Radiofrequency ablation of the nerves in the back has been used since the 1970s in people with intractable back pain. The procedure uses an electrode that heats the nerves in the facet joints of the back, stopping pain conduction. This is done when the treating physician is sure that the pain is coming from these particular nerves, called the lumbar medial branch nerves. This procedure is not appropriate for all types of back pain. Typically, the physician will perform a block using an injection, and if this is successful, but short-lived (as is often the case), a radiofrequency ablation is considered.

When it works, a year of relief is typical (sometimes shorter or, for a few, up to three years) before the nerve fibers regenerate, at which point the procedure can be repeated. Burning or numbness around the injection site is the most common adverse effect.

Effectiveness rates in the published literature range from 50% to nearly 100% in small trials of carefully chosen subjects. However, a large randomized trial of this procedure in subjects who were being treated with an exercise program and psychological support did not show a significant improvement in pain or function.

I agree with you that this procedure is safer than surgery, and while I’m glad it’s worked for you, the evidence of benefit from the highest-quality trials is lacking.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

On Jan. 9, 1859, Carrie Lane (later Catt) entered the world in Ripon, Wisconsin. A staunch women’s suffragist and peace advocate, she founded the League of Women Voters in 1920 and was highly instrumental in the passing of the Constitution’s 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote that same year.

On Jan. 15, 1870, a Harper’s Weekly cartoon criticizing former Secretary of War Edwin Stanton with the caption, “A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion” helped popularize the use of a donkey to symbolize America’s Democratic Party.

On Jan. 12, 1908, American inventor and electronics pioneer Lee de Forest, sometimes called the “Father of Radio,” transmitted a long-distance radio message from the top of the Eiffel Tower for the first time, heard by an audience of 50.

• On Jan. 10, 1942, Mickey Rooney married Ava Gardner. Since both were under contract to MGM, they had to get permission from its head, Louis B. Mayer. According to Gardner, the studio “owned both of us, and did not look kindly on any change in Andy Hardy’s status.” Though the marriage was short-lived, Rooney later called it “one of the most memorable moments of my life.”

• On Jan. 14, 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met at Casablanca in Morocco to begin work on World War II strategy. At its conclusion, they held a joint news conference at which Roosevelt announced that peace would come “by the total elimination of German and Japanese war power. That means the unconditional surrender of Germany, Italy and Japan.”

• On Jan. 11, 1964, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Luther Terry issued the first governmental report stating that smoking could be injurious to one’s health. Its Saturday date was chosen to minimize the effect on the stock market and maximize coverage in the Sunday papers, and was, Terry said, “a lead story on every radio and television station in the United States and many abroad.”

• On Jan. 13, 1989, computers across Britain were hit by the Jerusalem (aka “Friday the 13th”) virus, created in Israel the previous year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Jewish state. Fortunately, since the advent of Windows, it is now obsolete.

The pages of the calendar have finally turned, announcing the beginning of a new year! 2023 has officially arrived, and with it comes new dreams, new hope, new aspirations, new goals. What are your goals for 2023? Perhaps you, like so many others, are seeking a spiritual renewal, a chance to increase your faith, and an opportunity to make connections in a community of believers.

If you are on this path, then you will feel welcome at The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux, an all-inclusive Catholic Church in West Warwick. When you come to this close-knit community, here is some of what you should expect:

One, you should expect to feel completely at home ~ man, woman, child. You are home when you are here.

Two, you should expect to see others just like you

~ gay, straight, or any other way you identify. No one is excluded here.

Three, you should expect to see a volunteer clergy who receive no compensation for their dedication, service, and commitment to their congregation.

Four, you should expect to see women serving alongside their male counterparts as ordained Deacons, Ministers and even married Priests.

Five, you should expect to see divorcees partaking in all the rituals and blessings that their married and single friends enjoy.

Six, you should expect a welcoming hand, an outstretched arm, an embrace, and an invitation to return.

The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux is an independent Catholic Community that functions outside the jurisdiction of Rome. As

Father Charles Vohs, the congregation’s Priest explains, this is a faith community whose mission it is to reclaim those whose experiences have left them feeling marginalized by the traditional Catholic Church. The church is a haven for those whose lifestyles and relationships have often left them feeling estranged, conflicted, and often unwanted. Father Chuck would say to those who feel left on the fringes of their faith ~ come, you are a Child of God and you are welcome here. Come to be replenished, edified, supported, and uplifted.

A quick peruse of the chapel’s website best sums up the church’s mission: “The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux welcomes all individuals seeking God’s love; we keep our doors open to every soul seeking to welcome Jesus into their hearts. We invite you to open your heart and allow His grace to penetrate your soul.”

Please come to St. Therese, located at 1500 Main Street in West Warwick. Services are held every Sunday at 10:30, either in person or via Zoom. Feel free to call 401-6809076, email stocc1500@ gmail.com or visit their website www.go1500.org for more information.

Celebrate the New Year With Inspired Cocktail Creations

Let’s pay homage to the holiday spirit by crafting some seasonal spirits of our own. We’re going to explore infusing vodka with fruits and herbs. Undoubtedly, you’ve seen flavored vodkas on liquor store shelves, but have you ever thought of making your own infused vodka? Not only is it very inexpensive, but say goodbye to artificial flavorings and colors and hello to absolute control over the ingredients.

It’s surprisingly easy to do. All you need is a large, wide-mouth glass jar with an airtight lid (not plastic, unless you’re making plastic-flavored vodka!), a fine mesh strainer, cheese cloth or coffee filters, and a funnel. Save empty vodka bottles to refill with your infused creations later. Of course, you’ll need vodka and ingredients to infuse, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

First, I’d like to share how to make cheap vodka taste more like top shelf vodka. There is no sense in paying for top shelf vodka for our purpose. The secret is filtering vodka with a charcoal-activated water filter, like a Brita or PUR brand filter pitcher. Just designate a new filter exclusively for vodka, because you won’t want to use it for water after you use it for vodka. Activate the new filter, as per manufacturer instructions, then drain the water. Proceed by pouring

the vodka through the filter just as you would water. You’ll want to run it through several times. I find seven times is the charm.

Will this method fool a sophisticated palate into thinking it’s top shelf? Nope. Will it improve the results when infused or mixed in a cocktail? Absolutely.

How to Infuse Vodka — Into a clean glass jar with a lid, place your infusion ingredients, top off with vodka and close lid. Shaking the jar daily, infuse for 12 hours to 7 days. Different ingredients require different amounts of time to infuse, and then there’s adjustment to your personal taste.

I have guidelines below, but taste your infusion every day until you’re satisfied with your results. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it. When you’re happy with the flavor, strain the infusion material out and

To sweeten your infusions, simply add simple syrup. But please don’t buy it! Make it. It’s called simple syrup for a reason. In a saucepan, simmer equal parts sugar and water until the sugar has dissolved. Here are some ideas to get you started.

(NAPS)—When the weather is cold, many motorists wonder if they need to let their vehicle “warm up” or idle before driving. In fact, today’s modern cars are ready to drive in cold temperatures without excessive idling.

e idea of idling before driving dates back to when cars were built with carburetors. With new fuel-injection technology, complex computer systems and thinner synthetic oils, drivers don’t need to warm up their cars before hitting the road.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “When a car idles for more than 30 seconds, it has several negative e ects, such as increasing air pollution unnecessarily, wasting fuel and money and causing excessive wear or even damaging a

car’s engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs and the exhaust system. Contrary to popular belief, idling isn’t an e ective way to warm up most car engines.”

“Unless you are trying to defrost the windshield or warm the interior of your car, idling is not required for today’s vehicles,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “In most cases, idling longer than 30 seconds is unnecessary, even on the coldest days. e best way to warm up your car’s engine is to drive gently at the start. Remember, a vehicle gets zero miles per gallon when idling and the result is lower fuel economy and wasted money.”

e Car Care Council has a free 80-page Car Care Guide for motorists that features several pages of fuel economy and environmental awareness tips. Available in English and Spanish, the popular guide uses easy-to-understand, everyday language rather than technical automotive jargon and ts easily in a glove box.

e non-pro t Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the bene ts of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

How common is breast cancer?

In the United States, breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women after skin cancers and is the second most common cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer. Based on the estimates from the American Cancer Society for the year 2022, around 287,850 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,250 women will likely die of breast cancer. On average, about 1 in 8 women (around 13%) in the United States will get breast cancer in their lifetime.

is locally advanced meaning it has spread to nearby areas such as lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate drops to nearly 86%. Unfortunately, when patients have stage IV or distant disease, the cancers become incurable, and the 5-year survival rate is nearly 29%.

• The other important advantage of early detection of breast cancer is that patients with early-stage tumors are less likely to need aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy and surgeries such as mastectomy which is the removal of the whole breast.

How can breast cancer be detected early and should I be getting breast cancer screening?

aging such as a repeat mammogram or an ultrasound. In case of a persistent abnormality, patients are typically suggested to undergo a biopsy which is sampling the area with a needle under imaging guidance.

in several breast cancer clinical trials looking at newer treatment modalities.

What are some of the symptoms related to breast cancer?

Remember, screening mammograms save lives. Scheduling a mammogram is one of the best things you can do to take care of yourself.

The goal is to detect breast cancer through screening tests meaning before one develops any symptoms. Detecting breast cancer at an early stage is extremely important for two main reasons:

• When cancers are detected early, they are more likely to be cured and have a better longterm prognosis. For a localized disease which means when the cancer is still limited to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is nearly 99%. When the disease

Numerous studies to date have shown that regular mammograms are one of the best screening tests for the early detection of breast cancer. Mammograms are essentially low-dose X-rays that are used to look for abnormalities in the breast tissue.

Different international societies have different recommendations for breast cancer screening. In general, women above the age of 40 years should get a yearly mammogram. Certain women are considered high risk

for breast cancer because they have a personal or family history of breast cancer or have a known genetic mutation such as a BRCA gene mutation or received radiation therapy to the chest wall before the age of 30 years etc. These high-risk women are suggested to start breast cancer screening generally at the age of 30 years which is usually performed with a combination of mammograms and breast MRIs.

What happens if my mammogram shows an abnormality?

In case any abnormality is detected on a screening mammogram, it’s extremely important to find out whether it is cancerous or not. Patients are usually called to undergo additional im-

In case you develop any symptoms related to breast cancer which may include a lump in the breast/armpit, changes in the skin such as redness/swelling, changes in nipple such as discharge/retraction, pain in the breast/nipple, etc., it is critical that you bring it to medical attention at the soonest and get the appropriate diagnostic testing done.

It’s critical that you go to a state-of-the-art facility for breast cancer screening and treatment.

At Care New England Medical Group, we offer a wide range of imaging modalities for breast cancer including 3D mammograms or digital tomosynthesis, breast ultrasounds, breast MRIs, and biopsies. Why is it important to detect breast cancer early?
Assistant Professor of Medicine, Brown Alpert School of Medicine Program in Women’s Oncology, Women and Infants Hospital

“The Magic Pillow for Sleep”

Best resting posture for sleep involves maintaining the head and spine in neutral. When in the supine (horizontal) posture, neutral positioning of the spine is achieved when the ears are in line with the shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. Therefore, it is NOT recommended for one to place only the head and neck on the pillow. To maintain neutrality of the head with the spine, it IS recommended to move the pillow down so that the shoulder blades are also on the pillow with the head and neck….”The magic pillow for sleep.”

Proper placement of the pillow where the shoulder blades are supported on the pillow with the neck and head is the Single Most Important Factor in achieving prolonged comfortable sleep. This type of pillow placement and use insures healthy spine positioning during sleep and greatly lowers the probability of waking up with “a stiff neck.”

Selection of the firmness, shape and fabric, etc. is more of a personal choice. As long as the spine is kept in neutral, these other factors are less important. A cool temperature for the head and neck is recommended for facilitating relaxation. Material such as cotton transfers air well and

maintains relative coolness of the head and neck, is generally recommended to contact the skin directly.

Therefore, the “The Magic Pillow for Sleep” is truly more a personal preference and almost solely dependent on how the pillow is positioned. ‘The magic pillow” supports the head, neck, and shoulder blades while laying on your back (supine), keeping your spine in neutral.

However, the majority of people sleep on their side. The principle of maintaining a neutral spine is also applied to the side lying position. The ears, shoulders, and hips are maintained in a straight line with the pillow wide enough to fill the distance between the head and mattress, maintaining the head and spine in neutral. Don’t “curl up” or tuck the chin to the chest. The left side is the preferred side to lay on for improved cardiovascular and gastrointestinal function i.e. minimizes esophageal reflux.

Help Banish Winter Blues With These Home Improvement Fixes

may recommend installing a whole-home air cleaner like the Trane CleanE ects, which is certi ed asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and has been documented to remove 99.9% of the In uenza A (H1N1) virus. e Awair Element is a great way to monitor your IAQ by measuring temperature, humidity, etc.

(StatePoint) Preparing your home for cold weather can lower your energy bills; promote a more comfortable, healthier environment; and even help banish winter blues. Here’s what to know:

• Call a professional: “Waiting until it gets really cold to run your heater is like not stretching before you run,” says Mark Woodru , senior product manager, Outdoor Products at Trane Residential, who advises running your heater early in the season for a good hour or so to ensure it’s working. “Scheduling a service appointment now is a much better, and o en cheaper option than trying to book an emergency appointment in extreme temperatures or well into winter,” he says.

• Change air lters: For better indoor air quality (IAQ) and to extend the life of your HVAC system, change lters every 30-90 days. If you have pets or household members with asthma or allergies, change lters more o en.

• Try zoned heating: Zoned HVAC systems let you keep a consistent temperature throughout your home, or heat one zone for individualized comfort that helps you save energy and directs heat where it’s desired.

• Consider an upgrade: Forty- ve percent of Americans deal with “shockingly

high” energy bills, according to a Trane Residential survey conducted by OnePoll. A heating equipment upgrade, however, can help you enjoy consistent warmth without wasted energy. Consider the XC95m furnace from Trane. Its AFUE rating of up to 97.3% means nearly all of the fuel it uses goes to warming the home. When paired with the energy-ecient XV20i Variable Speed Heat Pump, you can enjoy the reliability of a hybrid or dual fuel system. To learn more, visit: trane.com/residential.

• Set your thermostat: Newer technology can help maximize energy savings. With the Trane Home app, for example, you can program your smart thermostat and control your home’s temperature from anywhere. Its geofencing capabilities regulate temperature based on your location.

• Monitor indoor air quality: In the same Trane Residential survey, 57% of respondents said they su er from indoor stu ness and lack of fresh air. Improving IAQ can help alleviate allergy and asthma symptoms and reduce the spread of colds and u.

First, determine what airborne particles may be negatively a ecting the air. You can also contact an HVAC dealer who can test your IAQ and o er recommendations to improve it. ey

• Assess humidity: Maintaining a home humidity level between 35 and 60% is one key to improving IAQ and ensuring comfort in colder weather. Mold, dust mites and other air pollutants tend to thrive outside that range, and the body’s natural immune system can be compromised in dry air. “Monitor humidity with a reliable HVAC thermostat. en, manage it with a whole-home humidi er or dehumidi er,” advises Woodru . “ ese units are installed professionally and tie into your HVAC ductwork system.”

• Check insulation: Poor insulation is an o en-overlooked escape route for heat that forces your heating system to work harder. Homes built in the 1970s or earlier should be checked by an expert, as insulation quality has come a long way since then. Also, foam insulation can settle a er a year, so it’s best to inspect insulation annually. Certain insulation jobs can be accomplished by a handy homeowner; however, you may prefer hiring a contractor. e average insulation upgrade costs $2,400, according to the National Association of Realtors, but will save on utility costs in the years ahead.

“For many, wintertime is unpleasant indoors and outside. While we can’t control the weather, there are many things we can do to improve conditions at home to feel cozier and more comfortable,” says Woodroof.

Redware Pottery

Hooked Rugs

No one is sure who made the rst hooked rugs, but most historians think it was the Vikings. We do know that in the early 19th century, oormats were made in the United States from 9-inchlong pieces of yarn le over from machines that made rugs.

A strange redware pottery item was listed in a recent auction as a cup. But it looked more like a squat 2-inch vase with a large opening on one side. The auction catalog called it a “19th centu ry glazed redware slip cup,” estimated at $200 to $400. But even with a pic ture we were baffled. How was a slip cup used? Or was it just a typo in the caption for a sipping cup?

e rst rugs to interest U.S. collectors were made at Grenfell Mission, a philanthropic organization founded in 1892 to help residents of Labrador and Newfoundland, Canada. In the 1920s and ‘30s, they developed a cottage industry to make and sell handicra s. Items included knitted goods and hooked rugs from donated dyed silk stockings, and later annelette, wool and burlap. e rugs had artists’ scenes of Labrador and were sold in retail shops in the U.S. and England. Grenfell rugs are now prized by collectors.

We kept looking at pictures of red ware until we finally found the answer. The cup is used when decorating pot tery with slip, a liquid the consistency of toothpaste that was forced through a quill tube to create raised line and circle decorations. This slip cup was probably made by the Singer Pottery in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, about 1830. About four quills were poked into the open space in the side so four lines could be drawn on a piece of pottery at once. The auction slip cup sold for $649. *

having trouble finding a value for an antique RCA Victor console radio, model K-81, built in 1939. Can you help me?

By 1940, rug making had become an art form, not just a job for the poor. Artists and amateurs made hooked rugs to use or sell. is hooked rug pictures a map of the United States. On the back it reads, “For Peter Stone on his 5th birthday Nov. 10, 1940, with Carlo’s love.” Perfect provenance. It sold at a Cowan’s auction for $469. *

A: Toleware is painted tinware, usually with a black varnished background and designs painted on by hand or stenciled. Styles on the Horizon for

(StatePoint) With travel returning to normal, there’s a renewed interest in seeing the world but you don’t have to go far to bring the beautiful details of faraway destinations into your home’s spaces.

With this in mind, FrogTape brand painter’s tape and celebrity interior designer Taniya Nayak have identi ed the top design trends for 2023, all with an eye to how travel can inspire home décor.

1. Redrock Renewal: Breathe fresh air and renewed energy into your space with “Redrock Renewal,” which incorporates both nature and spirit through earthy tones paired with bold in uences of turquoise, clay and olive. Embrace a clean, light slate layered with simple textures to create a room that is calm, joyful, serene and spiritual. is trend can make a big impact in any space through small details like textured pillows, cozy blankets and clay vases.

2. Bohemian Bazaar: e “Bohemian Bazaar” style is about creating an environment that emboldens everyone in it to live a vibrant, authentic life. To achieve this look, add a pop of color where it’s least expected, like mixing chairs in di erent shades of fabric around the table or adding bright, bold hues to an otherwise small, dark hallway. Inspired by the people, culture and food of destinations like Morocco, India and Africa, this trend merges the details of handcra ed goods with soulful experiences by encouraging the mixing of patterns and colors.

3. Nordic Nature: “Nordic Nature” encourages a pure, clean and fresh space by

bringing elements of the outdoors into your home. e palette is re ective of a Scandinavian aesthetic, consisting of concrete, wood and crisp white walls to create a space with natural, modern and organic appeal. Look for unique opportunities to make nature-inspired but daring statements that balance the rustic feel with an uncluttered and contemporary vibe.

Apply a subtle concrete layer to your walls for added interest, movement and texture. Before you begin, tape the edges with Nayak’s preferred painter’s tape, FrogTape, to keep lines sharp and neat.

4. Midtown Modern: It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and excitement of a fastpaced, on-the-go lifestyle, but the “Midtown Modern” movement is about turning your place into a space to pause and savor every moment of each day. Implement saturated hues like black or navy to create an urban, contemporary vibe. Elevate the look with plush fabrics like velvet, wool and satin. Complete the room by adding a special sparkle, with statement pieces that have bright, brass or metal nishes.

“If your hardware is losing its luster, remove it and spray paint it with a new nish for a fresh new look,” recommends Nayak.
